What to do about Chaz?

Share

The body of Raiders wide receiver Chaz Schilens has been like a game of Whack-A-Mole. As soon as one injury is put away, another pops up.

The latest, according to coach Tom Cable, is that just as Schilens was recovering from his mysterious knee surgery which kept him out all season, his foot began acting up.

The same foot that he broke during training camp in 2009 while simply running a pass pattern and caused him to miss the first eight games of the season.

Naturally, the angry tweets and comments are flowing. Dump the bum. What good is he?

It amuses me in the sense that people get so involved with their team they have no problem in trashing the character of someone they don’t know along with coming to an analysis that could possibly be the right one _ it’s just not going to happen for Schilens.

A couple of points:

— Schilens has zero control over this. Maybe he’s a professional caliber athlete trapped in a bad body. I’m guessing he feels a lot worse than anyone tearing him to shreds.

— Unless his contract has been altered since he signed, and there’s no reason to think it has been, he’s being paid $470,000 this year. The guy was a seventh-round draft pick _ and lasted that long in part because of durability issues at San Diego State.

There was a certain amount of risk involved with taking Schilens at all, and the Raiders got him at a very low price.

— Take a look at every roster in the NFL and look at the corps of wide receivers. Everyone’s got a project, someone who doesn’t play, who’s been hurt, but has intriguing potential.

The reason Schilens is an issue is that he’s shown so much promise in the limited amount of time he’s played _ again, not his fault _ and because the Raiders are awful at wide receiver as a group and have been for years. The club actually put out a press release last year trumpeting Schilens’ return to the practice field, which probably hasn’t happened in the history of seventh-round draft picks.

The Miami Dolphins can find a kid who grew up dreaming of playing in the Coliseum that cloned himself after Tim Brown in Davone Bess and the Raiders don’t give him the time of day. He has 179 catches since 2008. I’m guessing many of you are wondering if Darrius Heyward-Bey will ever get that many.

Amazing that the team that had the ultimate set of hands in Fred Biletnikoff doesn’t seem to value the whole process of catching the ball as much as it does 40-yard dash times, vertical stretch ability, etc.

The reason Schilens invokes frustration is that here is a guy the Raiders have that actually can jump and catch. He goes after the ball and secures it. He actually fits the job description in the most basic way.

And his body won’t let him.

He’s a 50-50 prospect because of injuries yet Al Davis has such trouble targeting wide receivers in recent years Schilens is viewed as a savior for the gang that couldn’t catch straight.

For what it’s worth, Schilens (unless his contract has changed) is under contract through next year and scheduled to make $555,000. The wage of a reserve.

Still worth a gamble on most teams because if he ever happens to get healthy it’s a bargain, but maybe a luxury on a team that can’t find reliable receivers.

If, and I mean a big if,Schillens actually gets healthy and has one good season,he will want a big payoff. They all do.He has proven he can’t hold up.IR and release with an injury settlement.

  • wcraider

You hit all the points on this one. If Chaz hadn’t shown the ability to make the plays he has made, there would be no furor over his injuries but he has shown the most promise of all of our receivers. The only one on the roster who I would accuse of having good hands right now is JLH. His speed happens to overshadow this though. Back to Chaz, he may be one of those gifted with both great hands and a worn out body. That is the real shame here. Happy Thanksgiving, Nation!

  • I’m a good athlete trapped in a bad body too. lol

    Bingo!

Does Al Davis even look at film when chosing a draft choice???

  • Al needs to give 50% of his Raiders stock to Bill Parcells & let him run the team as GM.
Now THAT would be a great Xmas gift to the fans.
We could be winning this year.

  • Kirk

This team has plenty of talent.

    Very poor coaching, however.

No blitzing and no misdirection on offense equals losing.

  • amen KIRK

  • YoungAmerican

Kamerion Wimbley is a huge untapped resource on this team.

Put Mitchell on the field with McClain, let Wimbley put his hand on the ground as a 5th pass rusher and expose some offensive tackles.

He does it some, and it’s pretty effective. It needs to happen more often.

  • YoungAmerican

Is it coaching? How many different coaches have we seen come through here, with the same results?

Find coaches who can jive with Al’s way of playing football. Cable, Marshall, and Hue are the only ones in years who have had any success whatsoever doing that. We all know another GM isn’t coming through any time soon.

  • They need to just cut it loose

  • Actually Al needs to let Marshall do his job and that is to blitz more and stunt more. Al doesn’t like to blitz and likes to play man coverage , I think that is part of the problem with the defense playing consistently. Offensively I think its the QB that is more responsible for the receivers lack of production than having bad receivers. Just look what Rivers and Peyton are doing with scrubs.

    Well Happy Turkeyday NATION!!!

Long time lots of reading no posting been too busy tough loss last week Pit just dominated our Oline and was too jacked up over the previous loss for us to do anything…..Our WR core might not be the best but they can all ball it up at times no question….But in here “jermac’s place” everyone seems to overreact and try to point the finger we just need to play ball every week and keep composure. Let the head coach pick a QB and stick with it, and continue to pound the rock.

CONGRATS Double R on the new addtion to the fam hope all is well in Podunk

And a big Whats up to the rest of the brethran!!!!!

This is a good plan, but I think we might need to go O-line in the second round also for depth, and quality. We still need a RT.

Yeah I don’t disagree. If Floyd doesn’t fall into the Raiders’ laps, an OT should be the pick. Let him compete with Gaither or Tyson Clabo or whatever FA RT they can bring in. They need way more depth at tackle.

OK Djhonnyg don’t change if we start winning again OK you guy’s are worse than leaves blown about by the wind. You cannot make up your mind what the hell you’re looking at.

Yesterday everyone was crying for Ford to start now he’s a bum………..lol

This is a good football team that just lost a game, what did you think they were going to win tham all? show some backbone. Make up your mind one way or the other and have enough strength to stick with it. Either we stink or we don’t. Can’t stand gutlessness.

The reason I have changed my mind so to speak on the team is what I saw in Pitsburgh. Even the ‘experts’ change their opinion on a team throughout the season. A team looks good on paper or plays well for few weeks then stinks it up. To ask that people take a stance and stick with it no matter what they see on the field is ridiculous. I was thinking ‘hey we have a pretty good team here and this guy JC isn’t as bad as I thought”. Then..Pittsburgh, and yes my opinion has changed just as it has for probably alot of people who thought the Raiders were for real and then watched last Sunday and thought “well, maybe not YET’.

As far as being a fan or wanting them to win, I have NEVER WAVERED and after all these years never will, but my realistic opinion after the Pittsburgh game is they can’t do it with THIS QB rotation. Whomever it is.

  • ArmChair GM

Thanks for all the love, and for keeping us positive and motivated after that tough loss last Sunday.

  • I think Kanye West wrote Brien’s Thanksgiving dedication comment.

  • Al Davis is thankful for crooked mob lawyers and Wayne Valley’s trip to Munich. Most Raider fans, however, are not.

  • I am starting to get the “geeked” for Sunday feeling, watching turkey day football brings on an early build up. Goes without saying, the Raiders need this win.

Detroit took a siesta in the second half, err got out coached that is. Reminded me of watch the Raider game last Sunday.

    One game at a time.

Give a special thanks to Al Davis, who has figured out a way to win with no QB and Tom Cable as a coach this season. Not exactly the typical recipe for success, but a win this weekend and we got serious football in December.

    ……….

Kind of like the Raiders…except the Raiders siesta started the minute after beating KC. Detroit put up a much better fight against NE than we did against the Steelers. NE just ran it up a little at the end to save face.

    ……………….

Uh, is the season over? Raiders only have 5 wins. And although I don’t think they’ll lose out, it’s certainly possible, considering the QB decision that was made immediately after the loss Sunday. Team Davis have tanked worse.

  • buckeyeraider

Raiders need to bounce back from the embarrassment of the Steeler loss. I think they will. This team seems to have been a resilient bunch so far.

They cannot take Miami lightly however. The Dolphins are 5-5 also and have actually played better on the road. That Cameron Wake is a pass rushing freak. Raider OT’s better be on top of their game. Athletic, playmaking LB’s in Karlos Dansby and Channing Crowder, also. They are no slouch.

Raiders need and should bounce back and win this one, though. If Indy can beat SD Sunday night, that would set up for a very big game in SoCal next week.

The talking heads have already handed the West to the Chargers. Raiders could put an end to that talk.

    But, first things first.

  • buckeyeraider

How ya doin, Vegas? It’s been awhile.
You got to enjoy a SF Giant Championship. I had to settle for a Joey Votto MVP award. Oh well. LOL.

You’re right, though. The raiders should be playing meaningful football into Dec for the first time in a long while.

After not having won more than five games in a season for seven straight years..I think most of us, if asked in the preseason would be thrilled to be 5-5 after 10 weeks.

Yes, the beatdown in pittsburgh left a bitter taste in everybody’s mouth. But I do not expect this team to tank. Or lose out. They bounce back and thump Miami in fact, IMO.
