Gradkowski re-injures shoulder

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Sunday, November 28th, 2010 at 5:21 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Quarterback Bruce Gradkowski re-injured his throwing shoulder in a 33-17 loss to the Miami Dolphins and rendered the Raiders’ quarterback issue meaningless for at least the next few weeks.

Gradkowski said it felt much like it did after the San Diego game, a third-degree separation which cost him five weeks.

Raiders coach Tom Cable said after the game the plan was always to go back to Gradkowski once he was completely healthy.

Much more to come later . . .

Some guys just get hurt too often and Gradkowski is one of those guys. It has nothing to do with laying your body on the line or being tough and taking hits. Some guys just don’t manage things right and end u hurt every year. Football, baseball, baseketball, etc…. every sport has them

It was obvious the guy wasnt 100%. hes never had alot of zip on his throws but today was pretty bad even for him. underthrow after underthrow. poor guy! but thats the way of the NFL…rush players back too soon.(look at miller and Nnamdi still not 100% themselves, more of a liability)

Gradkowski was set up to fail today and Al should be ashamed of himself.

    18:30 time of possession?

Unreliable special teams coverage at best?
Still can’t decide which mediocre Qb should start nearly 2/3 of the way through the season?

    Really? Seriously?

Coach gotta go. Before it gets worse. Go with Hue and see what he can do.

Predicable defense. easy to diagnose for even an average qb like Henne. we have a habit of making guys like that into instant peyton mannings.

This team is lucky to have murphy and Ford especially. There’s not one other WR woth keeping.

  21. The Real Ray Says:

Bruce Gradkowski re-injured his throwing arm in the Raiders’ Week 12 loss to the Dolphins and is expected to miss Week 13.
Jason Campbell is expected to resume starting at San Diego. Gradkowski was ineffective against the Dolphins before the late-game injury, completing just 17-of-32 passes for 252 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. The initial shoulder injury cost Gradkowski five games, so if this is the same injury we may not see him again until Week 17 at the soonest. Nov. 28 – 8:24 pm et

  48. sec144r18 Says:

Anyone who thinks that Gradkowski is the answer is delusional. I would take JC every day and twice on Sunday compared to what I saw out there today. If Jacoby doesn’t make one of the best catches of the year – we would have only put 10 points on the board. In order for him to see, they have to move the pocket and generally to the right.

He is very good at coming in off the bench because he is a really cool party trick – move the pocket and throw downfield. However any NFL team worth its salt can prepare for that because he can’t throw downfield from 2/3rds of the offensive backfield. The rest of his throws were short passes in the flat and 15 yard tosses.

Jason Campbell isn’t the solution, but he makes us far more competitive than the product that was put out there today.

Jerry can do a Q&A with Hue who will say he got outcoached, outgame-planned and accept the blame for the offensive ineptitude. All well and good, but he’s still useless. Even the Niners didn’t want him for X’s sake.

  56. Raider 510 Says:

This team is still top 10 in scoring on the year, don’t know how much that’s Hue fault. But anyways I said before the game we have average quarterbacks and a o-line that can’t pass block. The line wasn’t awful today, but our other average quarterback sure was. And I know it was his first game all year but MAN, Walter Mcfadden I’m calling you out brotha.

  57. The Real Ray Says:

Jon Gruden could be making a return to coaching — but not in the NFL.

In the 24 hours since the University of Miami fired head coach Randy Shannon, multiple stories have named Gruden as a strong candidate to take over the job.

According to the Sun Sentinel, Gruden initiated contact with the University of Miami to say he wants to be the school’s next coach, and the school told Gruden that the interest is mutual.

University of Miami athletic director Kirby Hocutt says he wants to hire a coach who can make Miami “relevant” again, and Gruden, who won a Super Bowl as head coach of the Buccaneers and currently has a high profile as a Monday Night Football commentator, certainly qualifies. Hocutt also says money will not be an issue in the selection, that previous ties to the University of Miami aren’t a prerequisite for the job, and that head coaching experience is important.

Gruden hasn’t publicly expressed any desire to coach the Hurricanes, but it’s easy to see why a program that was once a national powerhouse would appeal to him. Miami has had some lean years and is just 7-5 in 2010, but the Hurricanes had five national championships and 14 seasons of double-digit victories from 1983 to 2003.

  79. Jmackraider12 Says:

  80. The Iceman Cometh Says:

Watching the game today gave me a total headache. Defense looked strong but had way too much time on the field and tired toward the end. McFadden on Defense was getting picked on but he is going thru the normal growing pains every rookie DB experiences.
Jacoby Ford has outplayed DHB period…cut the dead weight and play the players that give you the best chance to win.
As for QB next year…we dont need the marquee names just get someone who is freaking accurate and some offensive linemen (Center, RG & RT). Pat Devlin from Delaware would be fine by me. I want sustained drives not three and out…
    One Nation…Raider Nation

  81. Jmackraider12 Says:

  82. Raider 510 Says:

    Lefty,

I don’t think Campbell is as bad as some of you make him out to be. Not looking forward to seeing the 3rd string QB who even Cable or Hue doesn’t think is better than the previous 2.

JC has underthrown balls also, no doubt, very deep deep routes he has missed, (flee flickers both times) hard for any qb, on both pics grad threw today, they werent VERY VERY deep throws(liek the one ford stole on that corner route which should have been picked too) campbell has a way way stronger arm then grad, grad has a good short to intermediate game which also didnt show up today..IF YOUR GAME PLAN IS TO THROW DEEP(WHICH IT IS CUZ WE ARE THE RAIDERS) AND THE WR’S ARE OPEN DEEP LIKE TODAY, CAMPBELL WOULD HAVE GIVEN US A BTTER CHNACE AT MAKING THOSE THROWS PLAIN N SIMPLE.

IMO, the plays and play caller have not been what they should be. If Soprano and the Dolphins can break out a new gameplan for the Raiders in week 11, we should be able to do the same.

Not far behind that is the Oline and WRs.

That being the case the QB is under siege even Manning can’t get it done very few QB’s can. In our case I believe it’s timet to play Bruce Campbell at RG to shake it up and get this grund game going.

But all everyone could focus on was Campbell’s inefficiencies but the real problem was the Oline and it’s inability to run block and pass block.

There are 32 starting Qb’s in the mfl, only 8 of them are any good

  160. bg22958 Says:

Raider Nation step away from the ledge. Let’s keep in mind that we had 5 wins all last year and that was up from the last two. There are still five games left and plenty for this young team to build on for next year. But:

    1) No more Gradkowski excuses. His performance today matched his career stats. No other team in the league would/will even think about starting this guy.

    2) Hue has to become more creative with McFadden. Darren HAS to touch the ball at least twenty times a game. If they want to stop him from running then they can’t stop him from receiving. He is THE marque player on this team and he HAS to touch the ball A LOT!

    3) Jason Campbell has not shown himself to be a franchise QB for this team either but at least he can make all the throws.

    4) Marshall has to mix up the blitzing packages. It’s either rush 4 or a full blitz. Not once did they back out off of a blitz. Not once did they flood one side of the line or the other. It took Henne three times I believe to figure this pattern out. You have to mix it up!

    5) Nhamdi has to cover the other teams best receiver. You pay him a ton of money and he is the best defensive corner in the league, why wouldn’t you (and I don’t want to hear any Al Davis makes those calls BS – cause I’m sure big Al didn’t dial up those blitzes or start Bruce today).

    6) Jacoby Ford is special – use him accordingly.

Two tough games in a row and a tough schedule left but there are at least two more wins in this team.

  161. priesttj Says:

somepeople are just flat ignorant. If you have 200 white QB’s and 25 black QB’s and each have 5 guy’s fail a higher % will be black. Black QB’s don’t get the luxury of sitting on a bench for 4 years learning and getting NFL money if they don’t produce they get cut. The white counterpart stays and learns the game. Just be way of sheer #’s that is the process.

People are people and QB’s are QB’s regardless of color. THere are non-athletic black QB’s too who are very smart but they just don’t get as many opportunities…….it’s always been that way.

In the old days every black QB was required to switch positions in order to play in the NFL or you would see a lot of them in the HOF.

Guy’s like JaMarcus Russell set them back 10 years with his immaturity. But if you took Cam Newton and sat him down for 3 years like they did Aaron Rodgers who knows what you would have. They just don’t allow them to be 2nd string QB’s and learn if they’re not good enough to start they get cut or play another position. It’s always been that way.

    Poor defense schemes

Whatever happened to running the ball til you get to a 3rd down yardage situation. Run first, throw on 3rd downs. Oh sure, throw an occassional strike in there, but with Bush and Reece too, why not pound it.

Poor offensive planning. Sometimes I wonder if Hue has a ‘feel’ for the type of game that manifests itself at kick-off, or his ‘timing’ to call a home run play at the opportune time. Good coaches can smell the game and take command. Good coaches plan their plays around what type of personell they have.

The NFL has become very complicated, and I think Al has tried to keep it on simpler terms in the sense he likes his mano y mano and the verical game. But he hires Cable (well, drew his name from a hat) and Hue and Marshall and entrusts them to do his bidding.

To be quite honest, I have no clue how it works. I’ll have to give Al a call later after hes’ cooled a bit, and find out just exactly how things are going down.

No haterade from me. I’m right there with you. I was nearly banned for suggesting a few weeks ago that we trade him for a high draft pick next April. He is good but overrated, and I would dump him to get a chance at a franchise QB.

If Nnamdi is considered an “elite” corner in the NFL, it’s only because there’s a lack of talent at the position league-wide. It’s all relative, right?

The problem is that he’s paid too much and nobody would take him at that salary. The Raiders would need to offer another player and/or cash to equalize the trade.

cable record as a head coach…25-59…the fact that we suck is no surprise. Cable is a buffoon, but no one else wanted the job

    —————

No one else wanted the job and cable has done what he can. He is a players coach and has done a good job. Season ain’t over yet. They will bounce back. Cable inherited a dysfunctional heap of chaos with no work ethic. He has not transformed them overnight, but there has been progress. Slow, but progress. If he or Al or the gm can put together a decent o-line, get a long term qb, they will be ok. A lot of the pieces are in place.

Something happened today, can’t put my finger on it, but some type of cancerous activity is permeating the compound, and I don’t feel it is coming from the players or coaches. AIG may be spot on here. When the organization rolls out the OC to announce or explain decisions regarding players, that may undermine the head coach, and it filters on down to the players. As a player, you look to your HC for leadership, no matter who it is. Lose that, and the team suffers.

I saw you list of white QBs you’d like to have. I doubt there is one person who wouldn’t agree with the guys on that list.

I’d like to know who the 5 white pure pocket passers are in CFB right now?

I really don’t see ANY QB out there who wouldn’t be anything more than a project right now.

    Luck, Locker, Mallett ???

None of them are better than Boeller IMO.

Newton is terrible and keep Pryor outta here too.

    Build the Oline and Dline!
    …….

exactly. I asked for 3. You asked for 5.

Then you name 3 right off the bat. How about Tannehill at A&M? Landry Jones at OU?

its ignorant sh!t like this that makes this blog hard to read at times. nobody needs to prove how many black pocket passers there are in college to some ignoramus. when the hell did “THE GREAT GRADKOWSKI or “THE POLISH CANNON” stop being white? its funny how he just got darker all of a sudden. then some of these dummies have the nerve to act like race never played an issue with russell on here.

  260. armond Says:

i think its funny how so many have turned on grads now. i remember saying how this would eventually happen. he has done this type of sh!t since he’s been here. but since he wasnt russell it looked better. i mentioned last night how he missed tds early in the season before his shoulder was hurt. i really hoped he would do something cuz i have no faith in jason. damn shame the
season looks damn near over. im still hopin tho.

  263. SnB Production Says:

    Armond,

Good post. The Raiders just don’t have a guy at QB to get it done right now. Both are limited. We all hoped and wished that one of these guys would emerge.

But there is a reason why one of the QBs was given away for a late pick in two years…and the other was brought in to compete for the 3rd QB spot.

The team is better though. Need a couple of lineman and a receiver…..got to go back to the well and try and find another QB

Johnson from A&M is NOT a pure pocket passer. That’s why Tannehill replaced him.

As for the rest, good for them. Lets see how many of them end up in the NFL.

For every black pocket passer there are 5 white guys.

You guys can get mad all you want. Talk trash about me. Whatever.

Where are all these black pure passers in NFL?

Can a black guy be a pure pocket passer? Sure.

Haven Moses and great college QB they told him to take his ass to WR position if we wanted to play. He was Warren Moon before Warren Moon.

As an athletic kid, do you want to be Kobe, Lebron or Randy Moss or Deon Sanders??

Inner-city athletes aren’t going to relate to Peyton Manning, and inner-city HS football is not a passing style offense.

Now with HS seniors leaving their last semester because of good grades and going to college for spring ball and the like, the inner-city athlete is way behind the learning curve and their peers.

Not entirely fair, but just the way it is.

  315. priesttj Says:

Very astute observation KK It is killing us we need what you call a possesion rec like Chaz especially now that ZMiller is hurting. He didn’t even make a catch today. Not having a WR like Chaz big physical athletic and and great hands is killing us. Not to mention that he runs great routes.

  316. Raider75 Says:

Vick is a prime example of my argument.

Dude didn’t study film or learn the playbook first several years because he relied on athleticism.

As he gets older, he is realizing that he has to use his intelligence more and therefor his passing is improving.

White guys don’t have that option. They know right from the start that they have to use their head because 90% of them lack the athleticism to overcome bad passing.

If Vick couldn’t run. he would have been out of the league a long time ago.

Put a fork in it. The real Raiders are back and this season is done.

Coaching is terrible. Grads had no business being out there – it was obvious he was not 100% and he is not good as a starter anyway. The vanilla offense is a joke – so predictable its laughable. D is also so predictable its a joke. Unless there’s incredible individual performances, we get murdered. Without Ford, we get blown out 33-0. He was directly responsible for all 17 points.

There’s no heart from the coaching staff. Watching the Dolphins coach get/keep the team fired up – while Cable and Co. stand there with blank looks on their faces, even when the game can still be won … is just maddening. Imagine what practices and team meetings are like. The team is a reflection of their coach. No heart. Watch the post game interviews on CSNBayArea – the players have given up. After Cable said, ‘we’ll be fine’ after getting embarrassed in Pitt last week – you knew it was over. Watching today’s ‘We’re dissapointed…’ crap makes you want to puke.

Running game? Please. The oline cant move anybody and DMac is back to running into walls – and falling down. Passing game? Please. WR’s – even Murphy is starting to look like he doesnt give a F… – he is dropping more than he is catching and the alligator arms on that crossing pattern in the 4th qtr when the game was still in reach says it all. DHB is a total bust, was he even out there today? Actually its hard to tell because he is rarely targeted he cant get open on anybody. His one play – run reverse where he broke outside and went out of bounds instead of taking it inside where there was a hole was ridiculous – he didn’t want to take a hit. No heart. JLH checked out after game 1 last year – he can’t wait to be released – he was pissed he made the team. ‘Chill’ens is a lost cause. Give me 4 hungry players from the UFL/practice squads who want to earn an NFL contract over these bums anyday.

Defense : The 70’s era Man defense gets exposed *everytime* with just simple crossing routes and timing patterns with average QB’s/WR’s. Unless the front 4 can get pressure they get picked apart. 3rd down was atrocious. How many 3rd and longs did they convert? All of them. Run D was horrible – DLine getting pushed back 3-4 yards on every play – missed tackles everywhere. McClain is NOT an upgrade over Morrison – he is slow and likes to take on blockers instead of making tackles. Morrison was way better than this chump. Look at the stats. McClain another one of these 1st round busts with millions in the bank and nothing to play for except the off season vacations.

Bottom line – this team needs yet another new coaching staff – a HC with discipline who will make these players accountable and bring in coaches on all 3 phases who bring energy and creativity. Yeah right. Al is still kicking and running the show … aint **it gonna change till that changes.

    Raiders finish 6-10 (at best).

This is some funny stuff in here. Do you guys realize we are just like Cable?

After the game Cable is so emotional and says things out of his current emotions. Then by Wednesday his brain kicks in and he has a different tone and says some things that make some sense.

We are the same. We started out ripping the team, the coaches, and now we ripping each other. We not watching next week, we gonna lose next week, etc.

By Wednesday and Thursday we are gonna be on here breaking down how we gonna win this game. Sunday at noon the grills will be burning and brews on ice waiting for the game to start.

That’s why we one big family in here. Except for Cable.

Realize this: If we beat the Chargers we are back ahead of them 13 weeks into the season and can still hunt down the Chiefs. None of our remaining games are easy. All are winnable.

Let’s look at all the QBs drafted in the 1st RD in the last decade. How many were black/ White, and how will did they do?
I say more white QBs are busts than Black QBs!

Out of the remaining games left on the schedule it looks like the only possible win might be against Denver. The game in San Diego is going to be sad and ugly. The Raids are beginning to circle down the toilet. I just do not see the team rebounding after two very poor performances. Grads was late and short with throws to receivers that were breaking open today. Campbell is back in the saddle and his reads are slow and he holds the ball to long sometimes…not good when the oline cannot give enough time. Bottom line…this team ain’t goin’ nowhere with AD pulling the strings…late

I could care less if Nnamdi ever plays a another down for the Raiders. I don’t blame him for all the losses but what has his presence done for us anyway? WITH him we have 7 Double Digit Loss yrs. in a row. Does anybody think we could do any worse without him?

Trade his overrated arse for a decent QB and see what happens. He has some value on the open market, let’s get what we can for him.

WHAT HAVE WE WON WITH HIM? NOTHING!!! Can’t do much worse for crying out loud.

    —————————————————–

Totally agree – as much as I like the guy as a personality, Nhamdi is totally overrated – and not a winner. Doesn’t play big when it counts, yet he is all over the limelight when he has earned nothing. He is and never has been a playmaker, esp to match his contract or status. Speaking of, contract he squeezed from the Gheezer is laughable – untradeable so forget about that. He’s the highest paid CB in the NFL and is scheduled to make top 3 avg QB money next season or go into FA. I say let him go regardless, he’s just not worth it. I wanted to release him 2 years ago when he entered FA – before he got that ridiculous contract everyone in the league laughed outloud about. We can get 4-5 quality players (starters) for his current salary and honestly the D is only marginally better with him on the field – its the scheme, not the players that is keeping them at the bottom of the pack year after year. We can thank AD for that and that will not change until he passes the torch – or passes on more like.

While I’m at it – same applies for Seabass and Lechler – both overrated and paid *way too much* to perform like avg (less, in the case of Seabass) or slightly more (Lechler) than avg NFL players at their positions. Lechler’s great avg means dick when you’re 5-11 year after year – for the money he makes, we could have a decent LB for Christs sake. And Seabass is one of the bigger j(ch)okes in the league. They have done nothing to help win and their lax attitude is part of the bigger cancer that must be removed (but won’t be).

  347. raiderfankirk Says:

The D played well for being on the field the whole game, with the exception of covering Bess (Chris Johnson was missed there). Why not adjust the D? Double? I liked the way they mixed up the calls though. They should have switched QB’s when it was apperant Bruce was’nt healthy. I could see that at the beginning of the game. There’s not a QB in the league that misses that many throws when their healthy. Hue’s play calling whan it came to the ground game sucked, a few draws = ok, but power formation early in the game w/ no misdirection( why don’t you just tell the D “hey were gonna run it over there”) Aso’s not gonna be on the team next year unless he restructers his contract.I would like to see him @ SS. I don’t think he would have played if Johnson and Ware were available. It went from looking good to not so good this season in a hurry w, no healthy real QB on the roster. Hey the Pats are cheap as dirt and don’t really want to pay Brady (I can dream if I want too, could you Imagine). We are a QB away from a SB. Al keep em coming till we get a good one!! Maybe another league would be a good place to start.
