Postgame links

Filed a column for the print edition so running a little late on the postgame blog tonight. Since the temperature had dropped into the low 50s, figured finish at home.

– Here’s a link to my column on the Raiders’ suddenly inept defense, which is bringing back memories of the last several years.

– Here’s Steve Corkran’s story about the 33-17 loss.

– In the Raiders’ notebook, cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha details how difficult it is to play with a sprained ankle.

– Here’s the Raiders’ report card against the Dolphins.

I’ll add a link to Monte Poole’s column on the Raiders quarterback situation once it posts, as well as a postgame blog later . . .

Young rushed for 4239 yards in his Career with a 96.8 QB rating.

Vick already has 4329 Rushing yards and a 79.1 career QB rating.

I see the similarities. LOL! hahaha

  • alex7

    The bright side is…

A game like this finally shows the Raiders that neither QB is the long-term answer. I think some posters here knew that before the Raider brass did.

So hopefully what comes out of today’s loss is the desire to go find a #1 QB this off-season. You give us a guy that throws the ball like Chad Henne did tonight, and we’re a no-doubt-about-it playoff team.

I’ll stick to my thought that Oakland would finish the season on a 1-4 run after Pittsburgh and end up 6-10.

  • priesttj

Raider 75 don’t be so stupid son, go back and look at his stats at the same age as Vick. By the time Vick is finsihed his QB rating could be several notches higher who knows maybe higher than Youngs.

I think the arguement is stupid really righyt now Vick is playing the best QB you can play at this level. His worse game was to day over 300 yards passing and 2 Td’s 1 int and over 50 yards rushing. That is a career day for a lot of great QB’s.

  • 504 Raider

Phillip Rivers is the best QB in the NFL right now.

  • Chris in NY

Next week. This is it baby.

  • alex7

I have no idea why Oakland kept big-blitzing on 3rd downs. Miami proved for the most part that they could block the blitz, and it left Miami WRs one-on-one all day with Walter McFadden and other CBs.

It’s hard for ANY CB to cover a WR one-on-one. To blitz into a line that’s blocking well and leave a rookie coming off injury one-on-one…I don’t know what that was all about.

Henne picked the blitz apart, and Oakland kept throwing it at him.

  • priesttj

504 that’s very debatable I’d take Mike Vick in a heartbeat over any of them. He can throw it as well as Rivers and he can run it as well as Chris Johnson. You just cannot underestimate that. But it’s personal preference.

Best QBs to ever play this game:
    Manning: pure pocket passer
W Moon: not a pocket passer
    Elway: not a pocket passer
    Montana: not pocket passer
    Young: not a pocket passer

    Pocket passing is overrated!

  • Chris in NY

I’ll say this one thing about today: Gotta get the running game going again. It’s been non-existent the last two weeks. And the third-down defense was just awful. Worst I’ve seen in the NFL this season.

And yes, Bruce struggled. Looked to me these last two weeks that his shoulder was never right. But when you only run for about a dozen yards or whatever we had, and you’re a running team, there’s not much the QB can do. Add in that the defense failed again and again on third down to allow these 7-8 minute drives and we never had much chance.

One last thing: two weeks in a row we’ve faced desperate teams at their best. Not an excuse, but the timing of these matchups were not in our favor. I think SD can and will be complacent and we will pick them off next week.

  • http://atm Raider O

Best QBs to play this game in the modern era except Manning are all mobile QBs.

  • djohnnyg

We’re 5-7 period. May as well just say it now. There is NO WAY Raiders beat SD next week and everybody knows it.

It would be nice to go 8-8 this year. It would be a big improvment.

Just watched the nauseating postgame with Grads. Man, he is ghetto to the core “Like I sed, you know, dat game’s on me dog”.

Anyway, Raiders won’t keep it to within 3 TD’s next week.

“Like I sed dog” 8-8 would be a major accomplishment.

Not bad for the highest paid team in the NFL.

  • http://atm Raider O

The play calling was sorry. Most of our HB sreens came on 3rd and long, Reece wasn’t involved in the passing game, we need to rum more, and the OL is garbage!
Cable, Hue, and Marshall need to go!
We need a new staff! A capable staff with exp!

  • priesttj

Chris not to start an argument but when we tried to say the same thing about Campbell last week no one accepted it. Now it’s all of a sudden a matter of fact. Campbell saw the same thing Grads saw this week and Grads was even worse.

I said last week bth these guys’ need a running game to be successful and it’s true neither one of them is good enough without it. Now give either a great running game and they are both much better.

  • http://atm Raider O

    Run*

  • http://www.pro-football-reference.com/ KoolKell

The Raiders are not converting 3rd downs.

  • http://atm Raider O

Bruce can’t make a lot of throws because of his weak arm. Atleast JC has an arm. Keep JC one more season, but add another QB. I still think we can win with JC, but we need to fix the OL, and improve our Defense and coaching staff.

  • 504 Raider

    Good post #322. I’m in.

Dj, I know all too well how you feel, but I gotta agree with CNY. No question the Raiders were absolute bilge filth today. No question about it. All the old skeletons came out of the closet with a vengence. Even the old coot has steam coming outta his ears. But let’s give Cable one more shot, see what he can muster up this week and where that takes us.

My only fear is that Davis may be pulling the rug out from Cable now, like AIG says, like when they roll out Hue, and if so, the undermining of Cable is what is doing this team in.

But don’t give up yet. I hear ya, but hang in there!

  • http://atm Raider O

    1- improve the coaching staff.
2- We need to fix the OL.
3- improve the defense (add an OLB and a CB), and add a DC!

We can win with JC. IMHO

  • Chris in NY

PriestJ, Grads was worse than Campbell? Give me a break. Bruce threw for about 250 today and a score while completing a reasonable pct of his passes. Campbell was I believe under 40 percent and 100 yards while taking a bunch of sacks and turning the ball over several times as well. Don’t get me wrong, Bruce struggled today’ but it wasn’t in the same ballpark as last week. Don’t kid yourself.

  • http://atm Raider O

We can’t win with Bruce! We need a QB that can make all the throws, and stay healthy.

Michael Vick is following a similiar path that Steve Young followed.

When was young a poor passer?

When did Young go to prison?

When did Young run like a RB?

When did Vick learn to make SNAP decisions?

This is such a fckin copout!! Bruise the Loser was 100% healthy coming into this game, or he never would have started. He struggled because he SUCKS! He sucks as a starter and as a backup! I really believe that if he started 16 games for us this year, we’d go 0-16. I’m glad he started today though. It means the end of the Cable debacle!

  • magic man

Chris In NY…no bro…SD complacent in their house when they’re playing the Raids who beat them already. Rivers is looking at the film this week of how Miami picked us apart and he/they cannot wait to see us next Sunday. If they get a chance to put their foot on the back of our necks and kick us in the teeth they most definitely will.

  • alex7

Raider O, no defensive coach has, no matter how much experience, has been able to give us a consistent run defense. Why?

    Two reasons:

    1) We should have drafted Haloti Ngata.
We haven’t had a run-stuffing tackle since Sam
    Adams/John Parella.

    2) We don’t play enough zone defense. It’s ridiculously hard to play top-notch run defense when your corner backs are always turned, running away from the line of scrimmage.
Where was the OLB on the Miami end-around that gained 30 yards (before it was flagged back)? Covering his man. Where was the cornerback on that side? Covering his man down the field. You seal the DE on an outside run or end-around, and you have a good shot at the Corner and OLB both being out of position covering someone.

  • maximusR8DR

Raider O, how old r u 12? Yr on basically saying we need EVERYTHING in order to be a better team. Dude, go to bed an let the adults talk. By the way, young, montana, Elway had some of the best protection of all time. They could be mobile, that’s what made them dangerous but the abilty to throw from the pocket is what made them great.

Sssoooooo! A7, would you think Henne may be available if Pennington comes back, or is Henne gonna work his way into the Miami line-up to stay? He had that look of “bring me your best shot” today. Not sayin he’d be a Raider, just grasping at straws. I mean, similar situation when Cassil subbed for Brady, but Pennington is no Brady.

  • alex7

    Raider O,

Washington had a great O-Line when Jason was there. All-Pro Jansen at tackle. Strong running game with Clinton Portis. Decent enough WRs with Santana Moss, Antwan Randle-El, and TE Chris Cooley.

What did Jason Campbell do with all that? Nada. He’s not even young anymore, he’s had his chance. He is AVERAGE.

  • zopi

Sadly, there is very little to hang from, this season is toast.
Finally, Seymour showed up, in the locker room, and only to blabber nonsense. Of course, he should be ashamed for not showing up to play or be the leader he’s supposed to be. What a joker, two weeks in a row he takes a dump. Maybe he should return his paycheck back. And to think, the Raiders are giving a top 10 draft choice for this choke.
Chalk another one up to Al’s genius.
Whether or not is his fault, and a great deal of it falls on him, Cable should be fired tonight, not that is going to change anything or the Raiders are going to win out their string, no, they’re probably still going to probably win one more game, but at least it could bring a different attitude. Just get rid of Cable let see what the team does with HueJac.
At least I was right when I said that Gradkz should not play another game, but that was in the second half of this game.

  • priesttj

Chris, Bruce didn’t struggle today Bruce was terrible today……….period if Ford doesn’t steal that ball he throws 3 ints and he under threw wide open rec’s. I’ll say this IMO Bruce was worse in your pinin Brcue is God so we’ll leave as that.

He was inaccurate and threw into coverage he had DHB open on a 9 route and threw the ball inside to much. If JC had thrown that pass the boo birds would jumped all over him. But for some reason Bruce gets a pass for doing exactly what? he has a losing record he’s thrown more ints than td’s yet he’s GOD to you guy’s. Admit it he can do no wrong………..”he struggled” give me a freakin break!!!

  • http://atm Raider O

    Alex7,

I agree about Ngata, but I disagree about the DL bro.
1- Our DL played well this game except for the last play with R Williams. The problem is our LBs are not doing too well. DL is forcing people out side for the LBs to make plays, and they are not doing much.
2- IMHO a lot of the big plays against this defense happen when they play Zone. We need better CBs. CJ and Routt are below avg, and Mcfadden and ware are rookies.

  • alex7

    Rayduh,

Henne is Miami’s future and present. I have no idea what they were thinking going to Pennington for a week. That guy hasn’t been good in about 5 years. Henne is young – He’s had ONE complete season. He’ll be above average by next year and that’s all you need in the NFL – above average. Look at the Chiefs, Broncos, Jaguars, Jets, Bucs, and Bears passing games doing well with above-average / not elite QBs.

  • maximusR8DR

Blocking on O liine….inconsistant at best, folds under above average dlines
Tackling on D…same, McClain getting blocked, secondary, just speed guys, d line in consistant…..is it coaches or personal?

    TJ,

It cracks me up that all the Scabkowski lovers try to lump JC in with him. JC is 10 times the QB that Grads could ever hope to be. We just went 3-1 with the guy and for some reason, Cable put that scrub back in. I want Cable to get the projector treatment.

“It was like we were just out there playing,” Raiders defensive tackle Richard Seymour said. “Not much emotion, just kind of going through the motions. And that’s kind of how the game went along.”

  • alex7

    Raider O,

What did I say about the D-Line? I’m just talking about a nose tackle, which we don’t have. Miami ran the ball up the middle all day, middle for 4 yards, middle for 4 yards, middle for 4 yards.

Big run plays against us ALWAYS come against the run, where you have no corners helping out, and as soon as the RB breaks through the D-Line, there is no one left in the secondary – no deep safeties, no corners, no one.

  • http://atm Raider O

The Raiders play so much man-to-man, that opposing QBs, RBs, WRs, Offensive coordinators

    ALWAYS

know how to game plan against them. There are never big surprises. You know what makes the Steelers hard to block? You never know what they’re doing!

Are they in a cover 2, a cover 3, man, cover 4, blitzing, standard rush?

Oakland? Yeah, man defense, one deep safety, no surprises, easy to disect.

The McClain INT came on a zone defense where he dropped and read the QB.

  • http://atm Raider O

I’m just saying that our DL with Kelly, Seymour, and Henderson doesn’t need a NT. We have 3 DTs who are capable of playing all 3 downs (rush the passer and stuff the run).

I hope they don’t fire the guy unless we have a great HC on the line he is in love with a mirage just like the rest of them.

The girl he’s in love with is actually a dude..lol

But to be honest man I can’t get mad at Grads he gave what he could give it’s the coaches as you say where the problems lie. You never allow your fans to dictate who plays and I really think he did that today. He knew if Campbell did start well the fans would jump him. He gave into that and it cost him and us. We desparately needed to win this game and now we’re staring a 3 game losing streak in the face.

I blame the coaches because we’re here in week 11 and we still don’t have a starter at QB it’s sickening. I don’t care who it is pick a guy please. Cable is very frustrating with this stuff. He did the same thing with Kiffin and he’s pick that crap up.

The ther thing I can’ts tand is we have a 250 lbs RB and he NEVER plays what the hell is that? What are they doing gameplanning and he’s never in the game? It drives me NUTS!!
