End of a QB `controversy’

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, December 2nd, 2010 at 4:09 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Whatever was left of the Jason Campbell-Bruce Gradkowski controversy, if it ever evolved to that, was put to rest Thursday.

Gradkowski went to the injured reserve list, J.T. O’Sullivan was signed as the third quarterback, and Campbell, unless there’s a move toward Kyle Boller, will get a chance to play without looking over his shoulder.

Although he wasn’t available for comment, it’s unlikely this was Gradkowski’s idea. He joined the team for Wednesday’s practice, jogging through drills, and was with the team at the Thursday morning walkthrough.

Not long after the Raiders came off the field at 12:15 p.m., O’Sullivan was arriving at the practice facility with a member of the support staff and Gradkowski got the news he was done for the season.

You wonder if Gradkowski’s eagerness to return this season, laudable in a competitor, was something the Raiders simply didn’t want to deal with as the season was coming to a close.

Campbell was signed to an extension after being traded to the Raiders for $4.6 million next season, and it makes sense for the club to let him get those five games in, health permitting, or determine whether to go in a different direction.

“It would be a week a week or two weeks before he could even throw again or practice,’’ coach Tom Cable said. “You look at what’s left on our schedule. It’s just not enough time. I think it was a good decision made to move forward.’’

More news, notes and observations from Thursday:

— Rookie middle linebacker Rolando McClain missed practice with a foot injury of undetermined severity. He’ll have an X-Ray and MRI. Cable said he didn’t know if it was an issue for the San Diego game.

“We hope not,’’ Cable said. “It was a little sore yesterday, nothing to even talk about. All of a sudden today it was sore. So we’re investigating it.’’

— Defensive tackle Richard Seymour did not practice with a knee injury. A Raiders spokesman said they mistakenly wrote “shoulder’’ on the previous day’s report.

— O’Sullvan has bounced around the NFL after a successful career at UC Davis, having been with 11 teams, three of which he actually saw playing time with four of them.

He got his most extensive playing time with the 49ers in 2008, completing 128 of 220 passes (58.2 percent) for 1,678 yards, eight touchdowns and 11 interceptions before being benched in favor of Shaun Hill.

“We know a little bit about his background, (Passing game coordinator) Ted Tollner was with him in San Francisco,’’ Cable said. “So he’s got some experience and a little bit of the terminology. And he has started a few games in the NFL.’’

O’Sullivan also spent some time early this season with the Chargers, who not coincidentally happen to be Sunday’s opponent. Might that be a reason he was signed?

“I don’t know so much about that, but it certainly doesn’t hurt to ask,’’ Cable said.

— Cable conceded that fullback Marcel Reece has gone off the radar in recent weeks but he doesn’t expect it to stay that way.

“I don’t think there have been opportunities like there were early,’’ Cable said. “He was a very impactful player for us there for a stretch, and people are defending the heck out of him now. I think there will be opportunities as we move forward.’’

— Wide receiver Chaz Schilens practiced on consecutive days for the first time since training camp, although he was still listed as being “ limited.’’

Maybe he’ll make it into a game this season after all. He looked spry enough dodging reporters when he initially came off the field following the morning walkthrough.

Also limited were CB Nnamdi Asomugha (ankle), SS Tyvon Branch (shoulder) and TE Zach Miller (leg, plantar fascia).

CB Chris Johnson (groin) is not making a lot of progress, didn’t practice and looks as if he’ll miss a second straight game.

— Defensive coordinator John Marshall, his unit having given up 68 points in the last two games and struggling with its pass rush and coverage ability, was more tight-lipped than usual in his session with the media.

Marshall has saved his most pointed criticisms at a much higher decibel level for the meeting rooms.

“(We’re) not making plays, basically, and the rest of the comments will stay in house because it deals with players,’’ Marshall said.

– The Chargers gained 506 yards on the Raiders in the first meeting between the teams, including 431 yards passing by Philip Rivers.

However, Oakland put the game away by blitzing Rivers on six straight plays, with Michael Huff coming up with a sack/fumble recovered by Branch that was returned 69 yards for a touchdown.

While not revealing anything to do with a plan of attack, Marshall said, “:I think when you play defense if you’re too cautious then you’re not playing defense. So you play and you rely on the players making plays.’’

— Marshall said his unit’s strength against San Diego was “our coverage, our DBs and our defensive line pass rush.’’

    Jon Gruden may have drafted him, but he also waived him in May of 2008.

    Jon can admit a mistake.

    It’s no wonder. It’s as obvious as Al Davis is old. Al is eliminating the next Jim Plunkett’s competition. Just Win Baby…but only with the QB who I think is the next Jim Plunkett.

    Not sure about off the radar.

    He fumbled his carry from the wildcat, and was the target of a pass that was intercepted.

    Raiders were trying to force the ball to him and got burned.

    The two (Gruden and Gannon) were workaholics and settled for nothing less then perfection. What ever happened to those days???

    …………..

    What happened to those days?

    Are you pretending to be this confused?

    Al Davis traded Jon Gruden for chump change and draft picks, then eventually replaced interim head coach Bill Callahan with Norv Turner. After Norv Turner Al decided to stray further from the Gruden type of coach by hiring Art Shell. After Shell, Al finally hires a Gruden type coach, only to fire him practically minutes later.

    As far as QBs like Gannon? We just had one, and Al just got rid of him today.

    Either you have some serious issues with your attention span, or you’re just being sarcastic. I’m here to help if it’s the former. Just let me know

  7. inonewordraider Says:

    I’m thinking Hue and Cable wanted Bruce to start Al wanted Jason and so Al is pretty pissed and feels like damn it I’m right again

  8. Just Fire Baby Says:

    Jon Gruden also blasted Colt McCoy about his twangy voice and nobody could understand him, and also talked up Tebow and his great leadership.

    Well so far, McCoy is doing fine and coaches and teammates rave about his leadership and competiveness. Meanwhile, Tebow can’t even get some run in 59-14 blowouts and his “leadership” is having zero impact on the Donkeys.

  9. Drexl Says:

    I for one, am CELEBRATING!!
    I am glad they put Grads on IR. Now he can concentrate on healing properly. There was no way in hell he was going to have his second third degree separated shoulder healed with games to play. He would of pushed his shoulder attempted to play, and received his third, third degree separation.
    Now the musical chair QB game can come to an end. What a freaking distraction rotating QB’s was becoming.

    Comparing Grads to Gannon?

    Keep up the comedy!

  11. kokomo Says:

    best News of the day, Grads in IR. Now at least we can try and finish the season on a strong note and make a push for the playoffs without any distractions and that too from a guy with a bum shoulder

  12. Just Fire Baby Says:

    Yes the musical chairs got tiresome but why isn’t any body blaming Campbell?

    He was the one given the starting job and who lost the job to Bruce in the first place.

    If he could have mustered up more than 3 points in the half against the Rams, none of this would have ever happened.

  13. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

    Drexl, I wouldn’t celebrate. For instance, on Sunday, if Campbell looks like the same old Campbell, I will not be celebrating. I will continue to root for him. I will not laugh hysterically and make fun of him and his supporters here if he lays a typical Campbell egg, like in Pittsburgh. SD has a nasty defense, too. I’m pulling for him. I don’t root for the demise of Raiders players.

  14. Drexl Says:

    Yea its AD’s fault Grads could not keep his shoulder out of a sling.
    Damn you Al!!

  15. KoolKell Says:

    When you consider the Raiders have averaged 6.8 wins and 9.4 losses since 1995:

    9 Stating QB’s
    8 Head Coaches
    1 General Manager?

    How insignificant the Campbell vs Gradkowski debate is.

  16. Drexl Says:

    Of course JC is going to look the same. He is not growing into that “Plunkett” mold AD thought he saw in him.

  17. DaRayduh Says:

    OK. Here’s my take. May be tough for some to swallow:

    Al is red-eye pissed about the miami game. He is white fire hot. He is so furious he has to be restrained. After a medical support team calms him down, a three day attempt, a monumental feat at that, he summons Cable to his chamber.

    Al says: Cable, I didn’t know you when I hired you, but you’ve grown on me. So I will give you a choice. Before I pull out the overhead, what’s it gonna be.
    Either you and Bruce are outta here, or Bruce is outta here. You hearin’ me?

    Tom says: Sir, you know how I feel about you and this organization. No way I can go. I’ve started something here and………..

    Al interupts: Don’t get carried away there young fella. I started something here and I’ll finish it. To save you the embarrasment, put Bruce on IR, season ending, and come into my office here on Friday and we’ll talk game plan. Now get outta here (actually, Als’ tirade was full of expletives I can’t use here).

    Gentlemen, that is how I read between the lines. A shroud of mystery and confusion wrapped in a waste can.

    As Cable rolls down the dark corridor, he thinks to himself, pizza or chinese, pizza or chinese, pizza or……………

  18. JB Says:

    Grads is a FA next year. Being that JC is already under contract through next year and given Grads medical conditions over the years and his propensity to get injured, I highly doubt that we’ll see Grads back unless it’s on a minimum salary NFL contract. I don’t see other teams going after him for the same reasons we are aware of. He’s simply not going to be in great demand. This year might very well have been is last chance.

  19. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

    I disagree, Drexl. I believe in Al Davis, and the Raider mystique. Al Davis said that Campbell reminds him of Plunkett. I’ll take his word for it. He has 3 super bowl rings. How many do you have? And I’m supposed to believe you when you say that AD was wrong about Campbell? Never. I’m a real fan. I will be watching on Sunday. And I will not start laughing at Campbell, making fun of him and his supporters, HYSTERICALLY, if he turns out to play bad. I believe.

  20. Just Fire Baby Says:

    Everyone always said that it would help Jamarcus to sit and learn for a little bit.

    Although I never heard of a 30 year old, 60 game starting in the NFL QB ever needing to sit and learn, maybe this will be of benefit to Jason.

    And hopefully he realizes that completing 60% of your passes, not making a horrible mistake, not providing any leadership while losing 17-10 is worse than what Bruce was doing, as bad as that may have been.

  21. 909RaiderLifer Says:

    Jerry…

    There will be a QB conroversy by half time Sunday, when thousands of half in the bag Raider fans will be yelling at they’re t.v. “Put Boiler in there!.”….

  22. LB Says:

    He got the “W” in relief so he has a boxers chance. One block punt, maybe a timely INT, and multiple long drives and we are right there.

  23. Drexl Says:

    LMFAO!

    I to believe in the shrine that is Al Davis! In fact you may have heard me mention: “Al Davis should be on Mount Rushmore”!!

    I can still call backup QB’s what they are.

  24. Just Fire Baby Says:

    JB,

    There is nothing guaranteed about Campbell’s contract next year. We can cut him and owe him nothing.

    If he flounders the last 5 games, he will be looking for the same jobs as Bruce.

    On the flip-side, if he plays well, he will probably be looking for an extension.

  25. LB Says:

    I wasn’t laughing at BG when we were losing. I was upset because I like to the RAIDERS win.

  28. priesttj Says:

    They needed to get this over with and they did because Bruce was running his mouth nd the affectively shut it. Now they can get to winning games and stp the crap with the fans booing JC before he ever touches the field.

    Now he can relax and play knowing he can play loose and not have to worry that if he starts slow that he’ll get pulled he canactually play through it and come from behind to maybe win a game.

    They also have gotTo have to find a way to get Bush involved in this offense. To have a RB of his talent going to waste is flat out dumb. DMC has got to play better and I know the Oline is the issue but he has missed some opportunities to cut back and become a football player. It’s not going to alwyas be blocked exactly right you as a RB have to find a ways to move the defense. And he has that ability he just hasn’t done it.

    There are 3 players that shuld be in every pass play for the rest of the season DMC, Ford and Zack Miller those 3 can make plays. Everyone else should be there to open the field up so those 3 can make plays. If the Raiders understand that and do that this passing game will take off and never slow down. You cannot acct for all 3 and still take away the deep ball. That will give DHB plenty of room deep he and Murphy.

    J.T. O’Sullivan? Seriously??? I realize it’s not a critical position and that chances are he’ll never see the field…but this hack? 8 Years, 11 teams, 31 years old, 8TDS – 11INTS. What’s the point? We know what we have in him (and it’s not pretty.)

    Why not bring in a young guy with unknown potential? Let him get accustomed to the coaches, the playbook, meetings, the team, check out his arm? Someone with with at least a chance of making the team next year.

    COLT BRENNAN anyone? This move doesn’t make sense to me. At least Brennan might have a future. O’Sullyvan is a has-been never-was. I wouldn’t be surprised if Grads and Campbell are gone next season. That would mean we’ll be looking for 2-3 QBs next year…why not at least get a peak at one starting now. If not Colt, then some other young guy with potential.

  69. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

    It just amazes me that the media can’t see the obvious, that we are the best team in the NFL again. Campbell is better than Brady and Brees combined now, because he no longer has the stress of losing his job. Amazing these writers would still be so critical. It’s Al hate. That’s all it is. Oh well. It will be their credibility that’s toast after Campbell just lights up the rest of his opponents, takes us to the Super Bowl, and wins league MVP.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    I’ll start the screaming now, and it’s not that I don’t like Campbell as a man, or because of his race, it’s that I do not like what I’ve seen from him ON THE FIELD: inaccurate, poor decision making, stares down receivers, throws into double & triple coverage, slow moving, indecisive, cannot read defenses, mismatches, blitzes. Yes, we did win with Campbell at QB, but we won despite him. We won because of lights-out defense (Seymore & Co.), unstoppable running game (DMAC), and superhuman effort by Ford.

    I’ll admit, I wouldn’t mind seeing what we have in Boller right now. He looked good in preseason, which doesn’t say much, but Campbell has looked bad. Why not see what we got in Boller? Because unless Campbell can completely switch his game up and become a quick hitting, quick thinking, short passing “Gannon-type” QB the losing will continue Sunday.

    Shilenz your next. Less potential, more time on the field. Tom’s got a job to keep.

  86. DaRayduh Says:

    To win this game, defense will have to dominate, force turnovers, and score.

    When Boller came back against the Bengals, after posting an 8.0 QB rating (4-of-12 [33%] for 37 yards and 1 INT) in the 1’st half, Boller exploded in the 2′nd half, going 14-of-20 [70%] for 174 yards, 3 TDs and 1 INT for a 115.4 QB rating in the final 2 quarters. In back to back games, he (and the entire team) finally seemed to come alive and show the promise everyone had been expecting, as he completed 19-of-27 passes (70.4%) for 253 yards, 3 TDs and no INTs for a career-high 136.8 QB rating in the 48–3 victory in game 14 vs. Green Bay. Then, against Minnesota, he posted a career-high 70.6 completion percentage (24-of-34) for 289 yards, 3 TDs and 1 INT for a 113.5 QB rating.

    Damn, I didn’t hear about the accident, I Googled it and from the article it looks like the Raiders were about ready to fly him in:

    “He was telling us three weeks ago the Raiders told him he came here for vacation for little while and Raiders called him up and said they might need him to come up. So they told him to stay put since Hawaiian Airlines is a sponsor for the Raiders, and stay put in Hawaii and if they need him they’ll fly him up,” friend Jack Buder told KHON.”

    Wrong. This is not an end to the “qb controversy.”

    I said it on Sunday when Gradkz went out, he will not play again this season or ever for the Raiders. It was just of matter of time, and of course he sealed his faith when he said he was coming back this season. As if Gradkz somehow was better, with a bum shoulder, than Campbell healthy. Really, the next Plunkett couldn’t beat him out. Are they serious?

    That’s a scary proposition, if indeed Cable and Gradkz believe this, then it will be easy to understand that the “qb controversy” continues and should get worst because it means the Raiders with Campbell and Boller have nothing at that position, both are not trusted, and a new one will be needed.

    So, yes Al Davis called this shot no doubt. His next one should be firing Cable, as soon as next Monday. Give HueJac a chance to get his feet wet, and see what he’s all about. And if there’s a lockout, he would have a good feel for the players under his helm, and see if he can convince Davis on bringing in a qb that suits his game.

    2) Colt Bennan can’t throw with velocity past 10 yards. He is meant to be a backup in a west coast offense and I’m pretty sure that ship sailed with Gannon. Don’t remember Al ever talking about needing to dink and dunk the ball more. And if he is such a great prospect why was he sitting at home?

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Bg22958 – Dink & Dunk” worked for us when we were winning Division titles year after year. It wasn’t the vertical game Al prefers, but it was what was needed to win with what we had and Gruden was allowed to run it because it worked.
    Cable/HuJack/Campbell better learn how to run a version of it by Sunday or we’re in deep trouble. Chargers D will definitely stack the box and blitz like crazy. Campbell can’t put the team on his back and win a air war with Rivers…So the dink & dunk is the only way to make them adjust and spread to stop the short passing game – that might open up our running game for DMAC/Bush. Need to make them pay when they blitz. Problem is asking Campbell to recognize the blitz and throw quick-slants,outs, and screens is like entering a sloth in a ping-pong tournament.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`

    I think Chef is just saying he doesn’t want to dump Cable unless we have a proven good coach lined up. I’m not a big fan of Cable either, but I’m not in favor of firing him and then starting a search for another re-tread. We’d have to have an A-list coach ready to step in and those are hard to find( at least ones who want to work for Al).

    At the beginning of the season I liked the idea Hue Jackson as our next HC…but I think I was mainly excited by the positive articles about how animated he was during camp and his good reputation. But now that I’ve seen his play calling and game-planning I’m not at all impressed. He basically had nothing planned to counter Pittsburgh and Miami from stopping our run game. That’s inexcusable. His play calling leaves too many 2nd and 10 situations. Too many gimmicks.

    So if it’s a choice between Cable and HuJack or Cable and a retread hack like Green or Gilbride I say stay the course. He did seem to have the players believing…and during that 3 game streak most of us were behind him too.

  161. Dirtiest Raccoon Says:

    Treatment for Shoulder Separation

    The treatment for first- and second-degree shoulder sprains is rest. The patient will have to put the shoulder in a sling for one to three weeks, depending on the severity of the injury. Also, in addition to resting the shoulder, the patient must ice it for 20 to 30 minutes a few times a day in the beginning to ease the pain.

    These are particularly frustrating injuries because they can take six to eight weeks to heal. One may not be able to raise the arm laterally beyond 90 degrees until the injury has healed.

    For a third-degree shoulder sprain, surgical repair of the ligaments is necessary to fix the joint. Up to six weeks of recovery from surgery is necessary before a restrengthening program can be started. This program consists of range-of-motion and strengthening exercises similar to those used to rehabilitate a shoulder impingement. Braces and long-term slings are not recommended.

    If you cannot watch ilm and see that he knows that then stop watching. Because it wont do you any good if you didn’t notice the job he did vs the Steelers and SD last time they played. It’s a matter of guys making plays for him that makes the difference. Against the Steelers we dropped a lot of passes and ran bad routes. Tank, you’re right, I don’t live in Oakland. But I know a lot of people who are from Oakland and whom:

    a) are NOT criminals

    and

    b) are proud as hell of Oakland

    One way I can tell that someone has never been to Oakland is when they assume that police are scraping bodies off of the street all day long. It’s not even close to being that bad. It’s a very populated city, and most people in Oakland are harmless, unless of course you deserve to get knocked out.
    =======
    Point was some doofus commented on how upset he was that the Warriors weren’t touting Oakland.

    Any city could be what you make of it. You can make the best of Des Moines, Iowa, if you wanted to. That’s not the point. A great city is a great city. You don’t have to rationalize. I don’t have to make the best of NYC, Chicago, or Amsterdamn. They’re just great cities.

But you still come on here and attempt to convince us you are some football guru, like nothing ever happened. You really suffer from delusions.

Look at the Titans game, he wasn’t looking over his shoulder at Grads and the telling moments came with that pitiful slide with no one around rather than pick up the first down and almost taking a knee instead of running the play. Enough excuses.

    People didn’t like Russell because of who he was……….period That’s why they jumped on Grads the minute they could and that is also why they hate Campbell before he even got a chance to do anything.

    I saw his flaws like everyone else and I also saw the need to play Grads but the way some of you went at it it’s obvious race was a part of it. I dn’t dislike Grads I actually like him and think we need him unfortunately he’s hurt. But maybe that is a blessing in disguise.

    I have no problem with Grads I just don’t think he’s a starter……..period

    And tell us what you’ve been right about, dumbell you can’t handle what I bring to the table I’ve done it you talk about it. I wasn’t wrong about JC at all I’ve never made any predictions about him. I’m not wrong about DHB his career isn’t over and I’m right on about DMC he’s a great weapon. But of course you wouldn’t admit that because the truth
    hurts………….period

    DHB will be fine as long as he cntinues to work like he has. Before his career is over he will be a very good player.

    JC is just another QB like many trying to establish himself nothing more IMO. Give him a chance and he can be decent if not pretty good.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I was right about every single one of those players:
    Russell – I could see right away he was a terrible QB, with no aptitude for the game and too slow moving and dimwitted. You still loud him as a great talent, while Al Davis, Tom Cable, and every other owner and coach in the league see him for what he is. He very well be the worst starting football player the league has ever seen (yes even worse than Harlow & Schweigert)
    Campbell – I could see early on is slow, inaccurate, cannot read defenses, stares down recievers – basically incompetent. You DID think he would be a great QB for us, you just toned down your praise of him as of late.
    McFadden – I knew would be a great talent in this league and was ecstatic when we drafted him. You are now on the bandwagon only AFTER he proved you wrong with his play on the field. Funny you conveniently didn’t mention how Anti-McFadden you were.
    DHB – I was against his being drafted, but afterward held out hope for some sign of professional level talent. And have been disappointed ever since. Look what Ford and Murphy have done with a fraction of the opportunities. You predicted great things for him. DHB may turn out to have a career like James Jett, grade C+, but I don’t see him ever being an elite receive in this league. Just imagine the talent we could have had with that pick.
    I can’t say he’ll ever be great in fact I doubt it but he does have some strengths that can be utilized if they coach to his strengths. he can win games he’s proven that. Now we have to start someone and he’s done a decent job and mabe he can get better. Lets hope so becaiuse our playoff hopes henge on him getting things done.
    Gradowski being out for the year was obvious a week ago. His arm didn’t really appear to be healed in the last game.
    How will Campbell do now? The same as he’s been doing all year and the same as he did in Washington, which is why they wanted him gone.
    As one Raider put it: We seem to curl up under a good pass rush. He wasn’t talking about Bruce.
    The only thing that Campbell has in common with Plunkett is that he’s quiet and polite.
    We need a quarterback but first we need to work on the OL.
    We’ve all known it for years and we’ve all been amazed that Al Davis doesn’t seem to realize it. Last year’s draft was a good one. We need a good one this year.
  291. priesttj Says:
    Hobs that IMO is a perception and a myth because the players themselves have said otherwise. It’s because YOU like him that is what makes YOu believe that. The players just want a consistent performer someone who’s there every weeek. Someone reliable. I don’t think they care which guy it is as long as he’s there every week.
    This idea that Grads is so fiery and gets the players going and he’s a much better leader is perception. If you really listen to players I don’t get that I hear them saying that both guys are good QB’s just different. It’s personal prefernce on the part of fans. These players played very hard durin that 4 out of 5 wins when JC was starting they played hard and performed well. Now you can say he had nothing to do with it but IMO that is a very ignorant statement because he could’ve gne out there and thrown 4 ints and lost those games but he didn’t he ran the offense well enough for the players to make plays. That is all that is required he has to get the ball into their hand sso they can make plays. that’s his job and he did that. Now IMO he is an integral part of the offense just as Grads would be if he did the exact same things.
    Just let the guy play and leave it alone man let him do his job and the players make plays that’s called plaing QB IMO. Maybe your looking to critically at him because he’s not your guy. A long as he wins who cares.
  292. NoPassingZone Says:
    Anyone who is truly rooting for the Raiders should care less about “who’s guy” a player is. All we want is for the players to perform on the field and win. I would be ecstatic if Campbell goes out there and wins. I think a lot of people, me included, are afraid he’s not up to the task. True we did win with him at the helm, but we had herculean efforts by the Defense in one game, DMAC in another, and Ford in another.
    I truly hope he does well on Sunday and improves as a QB. Nothing would make me happier than for Campbell to go out and establish himself as the QB and leader we all need him to be in these last 5 games. Wouldn’t have to go into another year searching for a QB.
    This team is so freakin talented we don’t need an all-pro QB just a competent one. A game manager. We need him to be quicker, more accurate, and see the field better, make better decisions. If we can pull out a win Sunday we’re right back in the hunt. We better incorporate some quick-hitters, slants, outs, screens or we’re in for a long day. Without the short passing game, JC is going to get crushed and DMAC/Bush will never get rolling.
  293. Nnamdi21 Says:
    Suggs says preferential treatment of some players and red flags on others.
    Raider fans get scoffed at when they bring up biased refs yet it happens to us over and over and over again. We get flags when other teams might not because we’re owned by Al Davis and I think simply because its almost become tradition for them to do so.
Look at the situation, There’s a coaching change on the horizon. Unless a miracle in this month we happen to stumble into first place and win the division(don’t laugh, its true) Considering the o-line can hang, Ford get open, downfield blocking. It could happen! Hue Jack, light fire under your players, let play smart and crisp. Give the defense a rest for a change. Remember the 59 point game win. Someone slap Grandpa AL, he’s sleep during the week and especially on Sundays. Let fatboy go. He’s destin to failed again unless the player step up!!!!!! Raiders for life.
    Hey JFB, you gonna be hauling a Flat Bed of Chickens??
    Watch out for Tunnels, and Feed stores!
  330. Dirtiest Raccoon Says:
    Me an’ Earl was haulin’ chickens on a flatbed out of Wiggins, and we’d spent all night on the uphill side of thirty-seven miles of hell called Wolf Creek Pass. Which is up on the Great Divide?
    We was settin’ there suckin’ toothpicks, drinkin’ Nehi and onion soup mix, and I said, “Earl, let’s mail a card to Mother then send them chickens on down the other side. Yeah, let’s give ‘em a ride.”
    [Chorus]
    Wolf Creek Pass, way up on the Great Divide
    Truckin’ on down the other side
    Well, Earl put down his bottle, mashed his foot down on the throttle, and then a couple’a boobs with a thousand cubes in a nineteen-forty-eight Peterbilt screamed to life. We woke up the chickens.
    Well, we roared up offa that shoulder sprayin’ pine cones, rocks, and boulders, and put four hundred head of them Rhode Island reds and a couple a’ burnt-out roosters on the line. Look out below; ’cause here we go!
    Well, we commenced to truckin’ and them hens commenced to cluckin’ and then Earl took out a match and scratched his pants and lit up the unused half of a dollar cigar and took a puff. Says “My, ain’t this purdy up here.”
    I says, “Earl, this hill can spill us. You better slow down or you gonna kill us. Just make one mistake and it’s the Pearly Gates for them eight-five crates a’ USDA-approved cluckers. You wanna hit second?”
    [Chorus]
    Wolf Creek Pass, way up on the Great Divide
    Truckin’ on down the other side
    Well, Earl grabbed on the shifter and he stabbed her into fifth gear and then the chromium-plated, fully-illuminated genuine accessory shift knob come right off in his hand. I says, “You wanna screw that thing back on, Earl?”
    [ From: http://www.metrolyrics.com/wolf-creek-pass-lyrics-cw-mccall.html ]
    He was tryin’ to thread it on there when the fire fell off a’ his cigar and dropped on down, sorta rolled around, and then lit in the cuff of Earl’s pants and burned a hole in his sock. Yeah, sorta set him right on fire.
    I looked on outta the window and I started countin’ phone poles, goin’ by at the rate of four to the seventh power. Well I put two and two together, and added twelve and carried five; come up with twenty-two thousand telephone poles an hour.
    I looked at Earl and his eyes was wide, his lip was curled, and his leg was fried. And his hand was froze to the wheel like a tongue to a sled in the middle of a blizzard. I says, “Earl, I’m not the type to complain; but the time has come for me to explain that if you don’t apply some brake real soon, they’re gonna have to pick us up with a stick and a spoon.”
    Well, Earl rared back, and cocked his leg, stepped as down as hard as he could on the brake, and the pedal went clear to the floor and stayed there, right there on the floor. He said it was sorta like steppin’ on a plum.
    Well, from there on down it just wasn’t real purdy: it was hairpin county and switchback city. One of ‘em looked like a can full’a worms; another one looked like malaria germs. Right in the middle of the whole damn show was a real nice tunnel, now wouldn’t you know?
    Sign says clearance to the twelve-foot line, but the chickens was stacked to thirteen-nine. Well we shot that tunnel at a hundred-and-ten, like gas through a funnel and eggs through a hen, and we took that top row of chickens off slicker than scum off a Lousiana swamp. Went down and around and around and down ’til we run outta ground at the edge of town. Bashed into the side of the feed store… in downtown Pagosa Springs.
    So you telling me, Fassel made wonders?
  372. SilverNBlackPA Says:
    Was fooling around with that ESPN playoff generator thing they have.
    It’s a longshot no matter how you look at it.
    Winning out is obviously the easiest way in, but that’s even tough, since San Diego and KC both have pretty soft schedules the rest of the way. Best the Raiders can do is 10-6; KC or SD could easily go 11-5.
    The Raiders actually could drop either the Jags or Colts game (but not both) and still get in at 9-7 if they win out in the division and get some help by San Diego and KC dropping some games. A 3 way tie at 9-7 would give Oakland the division title by virtue of the division record.
    So obviously, it’s about 95 percent certain the playoffs are a pipe dream. No matter how you slice it, though, lose on Sunday and the season is over.
    For myself, I’m holding out hope for 8-8. Cripes, even give me 7-9 and let’s at least break the double digit losing season streak.
  373. Raider O Says:
    I think Fassel is a better coach than Cable, but not that much better. For that reason I would rather keep Cable over hiring a guy like Fassel.
  390. SilverNBlackPA Says:
    In discussing potential HC candidates, we need to remember the pattern that Tim Kawakami pointed out some time back. Namely that for the past 20+ years, Al has alternated between two types of coaches.
    He falls in love with brainy offensive guru-types, then gets annoyed because they tend to have minds of their own, fires them for a blue-collar offensive line type guy and then fires them because often they don’t turn out to be very good coaches.
    The pattern is undeniable:
    Shanahan – offensive guru
    Shell – blue collar O-lineman
    White – offensive guru
    Bugel – blue collar O-lineman
    Gruden – offensive guru
    Callahan – blue collar O-lineman
    Turner – offensive guru
    Shell 2.0 – blue collar O-lineman
    Kiffin – offensive guru
    I am not saying we should target Fassel. There is a huge list I would rather have than Fassel…however, if it came to Fassel or Cable, there is no question which one is a better coach.
    That was then Sammy. If Al would just relinquish some power. And the sun may be green tomorrow.
    Goethal starts at MLB perhaps?
    KC vs. Oak:
    QB: they have Matt and we have JC. I think both are avg QBs.
    RBs: Charles and Jones ate playing well & better than our RBs, but I don’t think they ate more talented than DMC & Bush.
    TE: our TE is much better. Can you even name their starting TE? ZM is a PB talent.
    WRs: The have DB, but that’s it. He is playing better than our young group, but we have talent at that position. Ford and Murphy are good WRs but they need to develop.
    OL: I think both teams have avg OL, but their OL is playing better.
    Again, I don’t think they more/ better talent, but they have better coaching.
    Anything to keep Ricky Brown out of the starting lineup.
    Wonder if Al makes another run at Steve Sarkisian.
    Not saying Sarkisian would do it, just wondering if Al would even try again.
    ==========================
    Sark already turned down Al once.
    One thing Al seems to nver forget is slights.
    lol. ah yes, the big “if”.
    that “if” is the teams downfall, unfortunately.
    SammytheBull,
    Good point.
    If/when Cable goes, it’s going to turn into another Kiffin situation where Al talks to a bunch of qualified people, none of whom want the job when they realize the conditions it entails, and is forced to turn to an unknown third-rater.
