Asomugha full, Seymour game time
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, December 24th, 2010 at 12:20 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Richard Seymour will be a game time decision and right tackle Langston Walker is two-thirds of the way to being cleared to play Sunday against Indianapolis.
The good news for the Raiders Friday is that Nnamdi Asomugha participated fully in practice and is as healthy as he’s been in three weeks.
Raiders coach Tom Cable briefed the media for all of 45 seconds before offering a Christmas greeting and departing.
I’ll have another post later . . .

Nnamdi needs to be on Wayne like glue.
December 24th, 2010 at 12:24 pm
Even if Seymour is on the field for only a handful of downs, it would be worth it just for him to draw the double-teams.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to All of You Raiders and all of you in the Raider Nation!!

Since we are talking draft, what do you guys think is the range for Shane Vareen?
If Bush walks, probably so although I don’t think he will be handed a starting gig somewhere else, we will need a #2 RB behind Darren.
Vareen seems like the one-cut slasher that works well in the ZBS, and has great hands.
I can’t see him falling past the 2nd round, but if he is there in the 3rd, I would be all for it.

Haven’t seen much about Vareen. Derrick Locke could be an option in the 3rd or 4th round, but there’s a good chance he’ll impress at the combine…
December 24th, 2010 at 12:28 pm
As far as the Raiders’ most pressing needs go, here’s how I see it:
1.) RG/RT – Possible targets could be FA RG Harvey Dahl and FA RT Ryan Harris. RT Jared Gaither could be a less expensive option in free agency, but it remains to be seen how healthy he is. In the draft, Darrius Morris from Temple may be available in the second round. Morris is versatile enough to play OG or RT.
2.) #2 CB – Every great Raiders team has had two good CBs. Brown/Thomas, Hayes/Haynes, Woodson/Allen. Sign FA CB Jonathan Joseph, or go for the top man-coverage CB in the second or third round. Brandon Burton from Utah, Curtis Brown from Texas, or Davon House from New Mexico State would all be possible targets.
3.) WR – Either a veteran or a big-time rookie WR. Vincent Jackson and Sidney Rice are proven weapons, but Green Bay’s James Jones could be an intriguing option. As for rookies, in the event that Michael Floyd falls to the second round the Raiders would do well to not pass on him.
4.) QB – With Jason Campbell being a virtual lock for the starting gig next season, now is the time to find a young guy in the draft for the coaching staff to develop. Get a guy from a pro-style offense, with a high football IQ and a big enough arm to run Al’s offense. Nathan Enderle from Idaho, Pat Devlin from Delaware, and Jake Locker from Washington are all possibilities.
5.) RB – Only because Michael Bush will very likely go somewhere where he can start (and get paid like a starter). Every run-first team needs a change of pace back. Even if McFadden continues to play like a Pro Bowler, either a big bruiser RB or a small shifty guy who can navigate holes in the ZBS would be key additions. Luckily, if the Raiders have other priorities in the higher rounds, quality running backs can still be found in the late rounds or as UDFAs.
6.) DL depth – Find an NT in the later rounds who could be rotated in (much like Henderson is), possibly another DE as well. As far as a late-round NT/DT, I like Ian Williams from Notre Dame.
7.) LB depth – Ricky Brown is terrible in coverage and can’t tackle to save his life, and Thomas Howard is likely a goner after falling out of favor with the coaching staff.
December 24th, 2010 at 12:28 pm
The Raiders should re-sign Seymour, Miller (franchise tag?), Gallery, Huff and Satele.
I think Huff should stay, if only because he plays a position that gives him more responsibility than any single player on the Raiders defense. I think it would be difficult for a guy to come in off the street and fit that role in a season. Stevie Brown seems farther along in his development than Huff was at this point in his career, but it’s hard to tell what would happen if he was the full-time FS. If Huff walks, I think the Raiders should bring in FA Jarrad Page from New England to compete with Brown.
The Raiders could also look to upgrade at C, but chances are they won’t be in any position to draft Penn State’s Stephen Wisniewski, and he’s the only C in the draft who could come in and contribute right away. And with Satele being the best fit for the Raiders’ offense in free agency this offseason, the Raiders might be better off just bringing him back. While Satele has struggled in pass protection at times, his run blocking has vastly improved over the course of the season.
December 24th, 2010 at 12:29 pm
I wish there were more option to replace Huff and Satele, but it doesn’t look like that’s going to be the case. Both have played well at times, and it’s possible that with a better cast around them they won’t be as big of liabilities.
December 24th, 2010 at 12:30 pm
Not sold on either Kapernick or Moore.
Kellen is a great collegiate QB, but he may go undrafted. Bad size, bad measurables, bad conference. Could be one of those undrafted gems, but he may never really get the real chance to prove himself.
Kapernick has the size and measurables and athleticism. I have seen him show some remarkable awful accuracy down the field however, and may turn into a Brad Smith jack of all trades player.
I doubt either will be in the first 150 players drafted.
December 24th, 2010 at 12:36 pm
Jon Baldwin= 52 Catches 810 yards 5 td’s
Devier Posey = 50 Catches 776 Yards 6 td’s
Justin Blackmon= 102 catches 1665 yards 18 td’s
Michael Floyd=73 catches 916 yards and 10 tds’s
Austin Pettis= 71 catches 951 yards and 10 td’s
December 24th, 2010 at 12:37 pm
OL, QB and CB depth have to be the top priorities for upcoming draft. Players should be available even without our lst rounder.
December 24th, 2010 at 12:38 pm
Plus roster space should be available with Chokie Lee Higgins and Stanford “PI” Routt, hitting the waiver wire.
December 24th, 2010 at 12:40 pm
I say that we don’t really down anything in the draft trade wise.
Of course you get the phone open, but we already don’t have a 1st this year and no 4th next year.
Might as well and let things come to us, maybe a slight trade down or two, and save that money on a first rounder.
December 24th, 2010 at 12:41 pm
It’s unfortunate because this draft is not very deep at all on the offensive or defensive lines.
FA is, though. If Al Davis can come away with Harvey Dahl, Carl Nicks, Ryan Harris, Tyson Clabo, or Jared Gaither (or any combination of the above) after the offseason, the offensive line will be much improved.
The defensive line could use some depth, but I think we’re already looking at four guys whose roles as starters are going to be pretty well solidified going into next season.
December 24th, 2010 at 12:45 pm
I keep telling everyone here, Jared Gaither makes Jamarcus Russell look like a workaholic. If Gaither had ANY value, Hue would have brought him here already.
December 24th, 2010 at 12:48 pm
I haven’t heard much about Gaither’s worth ethic that didn’t have to do with him wanting a new contract. His injury history is concerning, though.

I’ve seen quite a bit of Kaepernick and I’m still unsure if he can make it in the NFL.
Real bad delivery. Way worse than JaJason’s. Very powerful arm but also very inconsistent accuracy. Seems to throw alot better when on the move. Excellent runner, not really elusive, but his top speed and long stride make him dangerous once he gets to the second level. Has definite issues with ball security, as evidenced by the Hawaii game this year, and some bonehead turnovers earlier in his career.
Had high NFL hopes for Kaepernick after his Sophomore year, thought he was a poor man’s Vince Young. Thought he regressed somewhat his Junior year and bounced back again this year. Will be interested to see how he performs against a stout Boston College defense next week.
As far as Moore goes — I’m convinced his arm strength is way better than people think. He threw some darts against Utah – and if you saw the bomb he threw that should have beat Nevada – that puppy was in the air 60+ yards and perfectly thrown – you’ve got to think his arm strength is more than adequate to play in the NFL. He’s got excellent accuracy. I think the real issues concerning his NFL viability are his size and ability to run and improvise when plays break down. He appeared confused by some of Utah’s defensive schemes and threw into coverage when pressured. A cause for alarm but something good coaching can fix too.
Both of these guys will probably be there for the Raids if they decide to draft a QB.
Wouldn’t mind taking a flyer on either one.

Amen. This RMR guy comes on here and makes fun of the people who are watching the Raider game against Denver. He was telling everyone he was busy watching the Eagles Giants game and we should be watching “real teams” play football. Then, he has the nerve to say “we” when referring to the Raiders in his posts as if he’s a part of the Raider fan base. I’ve been critical of the team, organization, Al Davis etc. many times and I’ve even predicted they would lose on occasion, but this guy takes it to a completely other level in his hatred for the team.
There’s nothing that makes my sports world happier than when the Raiders win and tghere’s nothing that makes that guy more miserable. He;s a faker and a poser. True definition of troll.
December 24th, 2010 at 1:04 pm
I dont think Kaepernicks delivery is as bad as his junior year and his accuracy seems to be way better than suggested

There’s one other UNR player that’s intriguing and the typical hybrid speed DE with LB possibility that AD loves to draft.
Dontay Mochs.
Kind of reminds me of Elvis Dumerville.

Delaware QB Pat Devlin. I’m not sure if Devlin is on any radars around here, but he probably should be. He’s completed 70% of his passes
December 24th, 2010 at 1:25 pm
Devlin is tough, accurate, has a big arm, and comes from a pro-style offense. He should absolutely be on the Raiders’ radar.
December 24th, 2010 at 1:36 pm
Not one to predict won/loss on any given week, well, because we all seen what happened this year…so, with that said…Tenn beats KC, Cinci beats SD, Raiders beat Manning and Co…show down next week in KC!

I think it’s the perfect time to bring in a young QB. With the Raiders seemingly prepared to hand Campbell the starting job, having a young guy to develop behind him would be a huge asset. He’ll have at least a season to learn the game a bit, and it wouldn’t force Campbell to look over his shoulder like bringing in a veteran might. It’ll also give the Raiders a contingency plan if Campbell prove to be a suitable long-term answer at the position.

December 24th, 2010 at 1:57 pm
Yeah Landover Baptist got me the first time I saw it, too.
December 24th, 2010 at 1:58 pm
Only thing about Michael floys is he has had to deal with some injuries…..But I agree there Pimp
December 24th, 2010 at 2:02 pm
With Michael Floyd’s injuries, the only reason I’m not concerned is because they’re not recurring injuries. It was an ankle one time, a fractured collar bone on a freak play another time… It’s not as bad as having recurring knee or shoulder injuries or something. That’s why I shy away from C Kris O’Dowd, even though he’s a pretty good player.

December 24th, 2010 at 2:13 pm
Getting a young QB for Hue Jackson to work with should be a priority….just not the top priority.
Right now its all about taking an 8-8 type team to 11-5+ A backup QB is not going to get the Raiders those 3 wins.
What will is a good 2nd CB, a go-to receiver and a better RT/RG.
Those are the three positions of focus that can get this team the extra 3 wins to put them over the top.
Oh, and also a more reliable kicker…..

Maybe transition tag him? He is valuable.
Huff needs to stay right here in Oakland. He is also valuable.
Orlando Franklin or Jariel King might be there in Round 3.
OT Nate Solder from Colorado would be a good pick in Round 2 IF he slid that far.
