Notes, quotes and observations from Cable news conference, locker room
By Steve Corkran
Monday, December 27th, 2010 at 3:00 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Left guard Robert Gallery confirmed that he is slated to become a free agent after this season, unless the Raiders re-sign him before free agency starts.
Gallery has played his entire seven-year NFL career with the Raiders. He was the N0. 2 pick of the 2004 NFL draft and has been a linchpin of Oakland’s offensive line the entire time.
“I love this place,” Gallery said. “I’m just worried about this last game. I know I like playing for that guy (coach Tom Cable). Everybody knows how this locker room feels about him.”
When asked if he expected to be re-signed, Gallery said he isn’t sure.
“This is the first time going to free agency for me, so I don’t know what the process is like,” Gallery said. “I’m not really worried about it. It’s a long ways away. We’ll see what happens. I, obviously, haven’t thought one bit about it.”
– The Raiders lead the league with 1,199 penalty yards. They can eclipse the franchise record with 76 penalty yards against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.
Coincidentally, the Chiefs hold the NFL record for most yards penalized in one season, when they piled up 1,304 yards in 1998. Also, the Raiders have received 1,122 penalty yards in their 15 games this season, by far the most of any team in the league.
– Sebastiank Janikowski moved past Jeff Jaeger for the franchise record for most points scored in a season (135) with the 14 he scored against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.
Janikowski’s points Sunday came by virtue of four field goals and two extra points in the 31-26 loss. Jaeger set the mark (132) in 1993. Janikowski’s previous single-season high came in 2002, when he scored 128 for the league’s top-ranked offense.
– Pro Bowl selections will be announced Tuesday. In years past, it was almost a foregone conclusion that cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha and punter Shane Lechler were the only legitimate candidates for the Raiders.
This year, strong cases can be made for: Asomugha; Lechler; Condo; Janikowski, who leads the league in scoring; defensive tackle Tommy Kelly, who leads AFC tackles with seven sacks; running back Darren McFadden, who is fourth in combined yards rushing and receiving; kick returner Jacoby Ford, who is tied for the league lead with three kicks returned for touchdown; and special teams standout Rock Cartwright.
Asomugha is the only Raiders player who led the fan portion of the voting process. Fans’ votes counts for one-third of the process, with players and coaches each getting one-third.
– Cable said that defensive tackle Richard Seymour is “improving” in his recovery from a hamstring injury he suffered against the Denver Broncos on Dec. 19. Seymour missed the Colts game.
Right offensive tackle Langston Walker still is suffering from post-concussion symptoms, even though he has passed the mandatory tests for players who get a concussion.
“He’s passed the target but he still has some symptoms,” Cable said. “So, until those are gone, you can’t do much about it.”
Cable said that Mario Henderson fared well in place of Walker against the Colts. It was Henderson’s first start at that position. He spent his first three-plus NFL seasons at left offensive tackle before he lost his starting job to rookie Jared Veldheer six games into this season.
“Mario started off kind of hit and miss, then, as it went, he got better,” Cable said. “He had some struggles on a couple of things but, overall, again for a guy stepping in, who hadn’t played a lot lately, once he got into his rhythm, he was OK.”
– Now that the Raiders are out of the playoffs picture, Cable has had to modify his team’s short-range goals. To that end, he addressed the team about the importance of this Sunday’s game against the Chiefs.
“We talked about that,” Cable said. “That was really the plan this morning because it’s something we all had to face when you woke up this morning that it’s not going to happen for us. We talked about the improvements we’ve made from a commitment level, of where we want to take this thing and where we want to ultimately be and that’s to win a championship.
“It’s a process to get there. We’ve kind of been going through all of those things, but this week is just the last step for this year, and that is to go out and win a game and finish the season 8-8, stop the losing record thing that has kind of been chasing this organization for a number of years as well as complete the sweep in the division. I think that would be a heck of a deal for our football team and launch us into the future and the next year.”
– Oft-injured wide receiver Chaz Schilens finally caught a pass this season. In fact, he caught two against the Colts for 17 yards Sunday, after going three games without a reception.
Cable said he is excited about the prospect of Schilens going into the offseason without any lingering health issues. Schilens has been plagued by foot and knee injuries the past two years.
“The thing I’m really encouraged for Chaz is, hopefully, we get through the last week with him again improving and getting more involved and him being able to walk away from the season injury free or healthy, if you will,” Cable said. ”To go into the offseason would be a huge step for him. It’s good to see him back involved, definitely.”
When asked if Schilens has the talent to be a No. 1 receiver, Cable offered the following:
“I think this. If he’s healthy, he has the chance to lift us up. You can’t sit around and put No. 1 tags on someone until they can have a chance to go out and prove it. Unfortunately, with his injury situation, he hasn’t been able to that. I do think he’s a quality player and I do think he could really be something for us.”

Seems like Bob is our best O-lineman, for whatever that is worth.
No sense getting rid of your best player for a less than quality unit (at times), especially since he is due a huge pay cut.
December 27th, 2010 at 3:14 pm
Yeah, what’s the going rate for a washout left tackle who gets flagged a lot and hasn’t played a full season in I don’t know when… I’m not shedding a tear at the prospect of losing Gallery.
December 27th, 2010 at 3:17 pm
The 4 games Bob missed, AZ, Hou, SD, SF, were easily the worst 4 game stretch for this rushing offense.

Couldn’t agree with you more. Sluggers often try to outbox a superior boxer and vice versa when they should stick to what they’re good at.
December 27th, 2010 at 3:40 pm
I hate to say this but kell has a point with those stats. Same can be said about the texans blowing it by not running against the #28 (I think) rush defense in denver.
December 27th, 2010 at 3:49 pm
Bottom line is, Campbell is an adequate QB, but he’s late with the ball time after time…How many receptions have the receiver reaching back, spinning around or stutter stepping while they wait for the ball? His short passes are always high, exposing his receivers or throwing them off stride…it’s just not good enough to get this team where it wants to go…
December 27th, 2010 at 3:52 pm
Our lines packed it in yesterday, running the ball and stopping the run are all about DESIRE and ours was gone after getting eliminated…
Hoping they can bounce back next week to finish strong…

Actually, Indy had the #28 running defense against our #2 running offense-which Hue gave the night off to.
Your point is valid though, the play calling sucked.
Captain checkdown didn’t help either.
December 27th, 2010 at 4:11 pm
Tyvon played like he was hung over yesterday…
his approach to the LOS on his blitzes was way too early, every time…
He was telling Peyton he was coming each time w/ 14 seconds on the play clock…way too much time for Peyton to change the play, time after time…
He should be on the bubble to return.
December 27th, 2010 at 4:14 pm
All the talk from Cable in recent weeks about our Identity, and knowing who we are, and not straying from it, lest we fail ourselves………He and Jackson aren’t on the same page.
December 27th, 2010 at 4:15 pm
JC has played like a guy who is worried about his TD/ INT ratio… like he’s going to be looking for a job again this off season, which he probably should, but we’ll have to keep him until someone better comes along.
He isn’t Jim Plunkett, that for sure…Dan Pastorini maybe, but he’s no Jim Plunkett
December 27th, 2010 at 4:20 pm
Captain checkdown isn’t Jim Plunket Al!
He isn’t Pastorini either.
Captain checkdown wilts so fast when he’s facing a good rush that he makes Jeff George look like a stand up guy.
December 27th, 2010 at 4:22 pm
JC is just not a winner at the NFL level.
Some guys, in all sports, just get that bug where they can’t shake it, even though it doesn’t seem like it is entirely their fault.

aren’t the colts a super bowl team? did you really think we should have dominated them? manning is a hall of fame quarter-back, one of the best of all time, if not the best! did you expect our db’s to shut him down?
now we know big richard seymour is the ish!! and j henderson is too, but m henderson is not. he made langston look good yesterday.
we need to enforce both lines. find a free safety who can cover and tackle. i like what huff has done he just doesnt instill any fear in receivers.

December 27th, 2010 at 4:29 pm
Why can’t anyone cover a TE releasing from the LOS?
Same crap as every other season…
December 27th, 2010 at 4:29 pm
Curious: With the talk that Champ Bailey is going to test free agency, do you think we could sign Bailey and turn him into a ball hawking FS? Rod Woodson 2.0? We seem to always be looking for that single deep safety with good instincts, the last being R. Woodson. I just do not know if Bailey is physical enough?
Also did anybody hear Deion’s proposed trade rule. That there would be a one week trade deadline close to the playoffs, so a guy like Steve Smith (Carolina), could be traded and play in the playoffs (like baseball).

Harbaugh or continuity. Let Hue walk if he wants, plenty of good Oc’s avail or will be avail. Bring back Sey, Nnamdi, Wimbley, Huff, Gallery, Bush, ZMiller. On D an upgrade over Routt. On O a vet WR, a RT, and an upgrade over Myers to really free up Miller. With many draft picks and few REAL needs we will improve an already deep team and improve camp competition while our young team continues to grow.
December 27th, 2010 at 4:30 pm
Raiders need to add a RG or RT thru free agency and #1 WR thru free agency or trade.
Add a free agent CB who is better than Routte

December 27th, 2010 at 5:07 pm
Raiders need another draft like last season where we get starters and contributors from every round.
Rookies, Mr. Brown, Mr. Ware, Mr. W. McFadden, and Mr. Goethel need to step up to the next level.
Mr. Bruce Campbell needs to be a beast on the line of scrimmage. I wonder how good of a TE or even a DE he would make if got even more lean.

December 27th, 2010 at 5:43 pm
A better coach could take the roster we have now (offensive line problems, sub-par QB and all) and go deep into the playoffs)
For a lot of years we simply didn’t have the talent to win. We now have the talent to dominate. We don’t have a coach who can utilize the talent we have and play to our strengths. Seriously look at the mix of young and veteran talent we have:
OFFENSE: DMAC, Bush, Miller, Reece, Ford, Murphey, Good run-blocking line.
DEFENSE: Namdi, Houston, Seymore, McClain, O’Shawnessy, Wimbley, Mitchell,
SPEC TMS: Lechler, Janokowski, Ford, Cartwright, Williams.
When you have a team that demonstrates they can win in the fashion we did in but they don’t do it consistently – You blame the coach.
When these same players lose to teams they should beat because of gameplan – You blame the coach.
When the gameplan emphasizes your weakest attribute (passing game) and abandons your strength (running game) it’s obviously the coaching. Cable let the other coach dictate to him how he would play his game. He cannot match wits with other coaches in this league. He is not a chess player.
Again, I want to stress that these players have proven they are capable of dominating. That is not in question. A coach is needed who can devise schemes to put them in the best position to win.
If we can keep this roster together by re-signing the key free agents and adding to it (O-line / DBs / QB) through the draft, trades, and free agency, it would be a shame to waste the talent next year on Cable & Co.

Falcons great offense and great rushing attack is anchored by two undrafted FA’s on the right side and a 7th round pick at C.

I like how the Falcons built their offense.
Two 1st round picks at WR, a 1st round pick at QB, HOF TE, and high-priced vet at RB, 1st round pick at LT mixed with two undrafted clowns on the O-line, and a 7th round pick at C.
That’s how you build an offense!!!!
December 27th, 2010 at 6:21 pm
Chiefs had a good blueprint too.
Smart GM from NE to run everything.
Tough no-nonsense coach who takes chances and understands the math involved in risks.
Smart assistants who failed as head coaches (Peter Principle).
Smart QB who knows how to WIN. Draft builds the O-line and D-line.

I do believe his one sack was on Zack Miller.
I said he would be OK, and he was OK according to Cable.
Would have liked him to play better, but he didn’t.
December 27th, 2010 at 6:25 pm
KC should be a win if the team is still focused. I think this should give you enough data on Cable to make your own judgment of stay or go.
Players almost always say they want to keep some said coach regardless of how bad the team just played the season. Its standard around here.
Personally – I can’t say that I’ll miss Cable. He has shown some progress. Next year I think he will make the playoffs if he’s still here but I don’t know if he’ll make enough progress to actually be a BIG factor in the playoffs …enough to seriously vie for a championship.
IMHO, I great or very good coach can win a SB with this team plus some offseason additions/subtractions.
Either way, HJack must stay. He is the “continuity” factor …not Cable. HJack controls the offense. Marshall controls the defense. Cable is only the HC who has general responsibilities to include game management.
Suffice to say, I think HJack is a better coach than Cable and can win many games with this team maybe even a championship. HOWEVER, I’M NOT SO SURE HE IS ACTUALLY READY TO BE A HC.
December 27th, 2010 at 6:28 pm
That throw Matty Ice made to end the first quarter is what seperates elite QB’s from all the rest, and thus elite teams from all the rest.
Standing tall in the pocket and STEPPING INTO a throw even though he knows he is about to be belted by an unblocked blitzer.
But the throw right on the money, than got creamed. There is about 5 or 6 guys who make that throw in the NFL, and they all will be playing into the next couple of weeks.
December 27th, 2010 at 6:30 pm

Standing tall in the pocket and STEPPING INTO a throw even though he knows he is about to be belted by an unblocked blitzer.

I don’t think Cambpell can take anymore hits. He’ too frail. The guy would end up in the ER.
I watched Matty Ice once this year and wasn’t too impressed – not what I expected given the hype. He seemed to throw inaccurate balls but his WRs made the play. But hey, that was just one game.

JC has mastered stepping backwards, and doing a fade pass to the flat for 3 yards on 3rd and 9.
Once in a while, McFadden breaks 3 tackles and turns it into a 70 yard TD, and JC gains meathead supporters.

It sure looked that way to me. Did you notice DHB caught 4 balls, he abandoned the Run………the audition
********************************************************
I was thinking the same thing for awhile; running laterally against a small, fast defense that pursues the way they do was asinine. The problem with Hue doing that (if he was in fact trying to do what you suggest) is that Jackson was the one calling the plays and it’s his fault as the OC that it didn’t work. As a result, the only person he made look bad was himself.
December 27th, 2010 at 6:36 pm
Why Oakland needs to adopt the zone defense:
`We do a lot of disguising that’s worked,” Yeremiah Bell said. “Last year, we didn’t do hardly any of that. In the Bengals game, you could tell they didn’t know what coverage we were in. Nolan has made a huge difference.”
quote on Mike Nolan taking the Dolphins D and turning them into a top-7 one in year 1.

It’s been said you run AT Freeney and Mathis, because they’re undersized and to slow down their pass rush.
Colts pressure D overwhelmed the Raiders and Campbell couldn’t throw us out of it.

Davis let Gruden pick Gannon after Gruden went 8-8 with Donald Hollas.
Davis will let Hue Jackson pick whoever.

Terrapin, if Campbell hasn’t cut it loose in 6 years, despite being benched multiple times in Washington also, he never will.
December 27th, 2010 at 6:41 pm
Campbell added running to his repertoire midway through the season after some enlightenment watching Cam Newton. Maybe he can add “cut’in it loose” as well and release the ball with speed and hesitation.
December 27th, 2010 at 6:42 pm
Jackson didn’t do a lot to make the offense better this year,getting rid of the bust did.Those of you proclaiming him the new offensive genius in the league are going way overboard.Any decent OC would have looked good with McFadden breaking long runs this year.And when McFadden didn’t break those big plays,the offense pretty much was average at best.Plus,too many times McFadden wasn’t even given the chance to make the difference he was making.

JFB
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The truth is Jason Campbell is in contention for top two WORST starting (and some backup players) at “skill positions” on our offense:
RB DMAC (Bush)
TE Miller (Meyers)
WR Ford, (Murphy)
FB Reece
QB Campbell
WR Bey
He can battle Bey for the cellar.
December 27th, 2010 at 6:47 pm
So Jackson gave McFadden the chances to break big runs through formations and play-calling.
Jamarcus had more yards and a better TD to INT ratio in 2008 than Campbell this year, yet our O still sucked.
He limited the damage Campbell could do by calling mostly dump offs and short passes.
Offense went from 30th to 9th.
Dis be good.
1. Hear me now…JC is the best QB for the Raiders. Unless you have another sure-fire player…you are wasting time. Carson Palmer, Donovan McNabb etc..are WASHOUTS….JC gets another year at the helm. He was uninspiring..but didn’t make mistakes…that what this team needs in lieu of a Pro-Bowler….Upset about the QB..then draft a kid in the 7th round or get a UFA
December 27th, 2010 at 6:49 pm
He ignores we ran the ball almost half of all plays the first half,
and that 20 of JC’s 41 passes came in the final two drives of the game.
Very convenient.
December 27th, 2010 at 6:50 pm
Facts:
Dmac 11 Carries
Bush 3 carries
J Campbell 42 pass attempts
Raiders Lost.
December 27th, 2010 at 6:51 pm
#2 Run Team vs. #28 Run Defense Team
J Campbell 42 carries.
December 27th, 2010 at 6:51 pm
SnB,
that’s all we’re asking. That the Raiders recognize JC only gives us the chance at being 7-9 or 8-8 every year, and that they BEGIN the search for a better QB.
Our window of opportunity is about 4 more years with the young nucleus and vets like Shane/Kelly/Seymour/Aso before the young guys leave via FA and the vets start wearing down.
I don’t want to be average those 4 years. You HAVE to look for, trade for, or draft a QB right away to not waste this window.
December 27th, 2010 at 6:51 pm
To go through yet another QB change would be unbearable. The team is top 10 in total offense…now most of that is due to DMAC…but damn…this team needs a little continuity.
Keep JC, Keep Cable and move on
December 27th, 2010 at 6:52 pm
I guess we all have different opinions in that regard. Overall, its a confluence of things. Sure, canning JR and replacing him with a better QB made a difference and DMC is a great player; but so did bringing in HueJack to coordinate that entire offense. Its never just one thing although one thing can make a huge difference.
December 27th, 2010 at 6:52 pm
Again, you just don’t move from the 30s to the Top 10 and say the OC had nothing to do with it.
Nicely done. Don’t want to overwhelm your brain so keep it simple with a couple of numbers but don’t break down how they were spread out.
Since the coaches are not tied to each other, I would like to see them hit the exit door in this order:
Sanjay Lal
John Marshall
Bones Fassel
Tom Cable (I can go either way on this one)
December 27th, 2010 at 6:55 pm
We put up 500 yards against hapless teams like Seattle and Denver twice.
Tennesse, Pittsburgh, Miami, SF are all better than average offenses and we were abysmal in all facets. RB’s did very little, QB play was awful, O-line with no push, OC with no creativity.
December 27th, 2010 at 6:55 pm
KK,
just go ahead and declare to the world that you would have kept running out an injured DMac and ineffective Bush in the 4th quarter, going 3 and out again, while down two scores.
does it matter that Marshall’s defense is playing better than any defense since the Gannon years?
Alex,
You need a top notch organization to develop a pro-bowl elite QB like Aaron Rogers, Ryan, Mannings etc….or to develop a troubled guy like Vick..
Not going to happen here. I use 40 years of history as a reference.
So you take JC and build him up and hope for the best.
The Raiders should try to build a team that wins with championship defense (easier to build) and running the football.
Coached defense in Baltimore
Why would he come here where he’d be asked to run 90% man-to-man and would have zero input on drafting players to fit his scheme?
December 27th, 2010 at 7:04 pm
That’s the way they won in 2002. Gannon threw it alot (welcome to modern football!)
Also, how can you build a top defense when you don’t allow playing zone, disguising coverages?
You realize we haven’t had a top ranked defense since Willie Shaw and Jon Gruden left and took his man / zone combination with him, right?
December 27th, 2010 at 7:05 pm
Alex7,
Hell we can keep Cable and if we had a top notch DC we could have Hue and Marvin which would be #2 to Weis and Crennel in the AFC West. Those cats are making Haley look real good. I remember Haley was on hot seat at one point, now look at him after some real coordinators.
Didn’t make mistakes??? Are you insane? Do you think interceptions are the only mistake a QB can make?
1.) An inaccurate pass that is either uncatchable and falls incomplete IS A MISTAKE!
2.) An inaccurate pass that causes the receiver to break his stride, reach back, dive, and allows the defenders to converge on the receiver IS A MISTAKE!
3.) Holding on to the ball too long and taking a sack IS A MISTAKE!
3.) Failing to recognize and exploit personnel mismatches in coverage IS A MISTAKE!
4.) Failing to recognize a blitz IS A MISTAKE!
5.) Staring down a receiver IS A MISTAKE!
6.) Missing wide open receivers in order to opt out for the check-down receiver IS A MISTAKE
Open your eyes. Stop making excuses for a QB who has proven his entire career to be incompetent.
Three kickoff returns for touchdowns does not offset piss-poor performance the majority of the rest of the time. How many times did Ford run into a pile and get virtually nothing? How many times in critical situations did we give up big returns, and how many times did we get nothing on our own? How many times did our opponents start drives outside of their own 35 because we didn’t cover kickoffs properly? Want to talk rational? The Raiders’ special teams were waaay better overall when Schneider was the ST coach than they are now, and it isn’t even close.
Raiders are 14th in the league in kickoff returns and tied for the lead with 3 TD’s. We are 13th in covering kicks and only have given up 1 TD.
Punts aren’t as good, as we are 25th in returns (thanks JLH as Nick Miller is 17th in the league at least) and we are 20th covering punts. 0 TD’s given up 0 TD’s scored.
We have lost two fumbles on all kicks, recovered 4 fumbles on all kicks.
+2 in TD’s and +2 in turnovers.
I don’t see this as a major issue. Were we better with Schneider? At covering kicks yes, but not in returning them.
Nopassingzone,
JC has given the Raiders the best QB play since Gannon.
December 27th, 2010 at 7:33 pm
KK,
we ran 29 plays in the first half (before that 1-minute drill) and ran the ball 12 times.
Seems ok if you realize we went 3 and out our first 2 drives running the ball 6 of 10 plays.
You ok with that?
December 27th, 2010 at 7:34 pm
Alex #133,
You are going to be a long suffering fan man. The defensive strategy is not going to change. So better to go pay another CB $10-$15 million and at least have a chance. Davis isn’t changing it.
Top Shelf QB? It will take 2 or 3 years for the best of the young guys in the best SITUATIONS! The Raiders don’t keep things consistent enough, nor do they put the supporting cast together for a young QB to succeed.
They just don’t.
Bringing in a Carson Palmer or McNabb at this point, with all the flaws on this offense, is not a serious upgrade….a slight upgrade maybe…but these guys couldn’t succeed with teams with better coaching and better o-lines and better receivers.
So, go with the Devil you know. JC is very average. Makes a good play makes bad plays…but at least we know with him we got what we got.
December 27th, 2010 at 7:35 pm
December 27th, 2010 at 7:37 pm
and 7 of 13 plays in the 3rd quarter.
JC wasnt bench, he got hurt. there was a decision to be made over whether he should come back to start in the playoffs, or whther they keep the hot hand.
as for the Zone argument, you said top 7, that means number 8 uses man. no reason for us not to be top 10, either. Man-Man is the best way to cover pass imo, as zone leaves many gaps.
SnB,
We probably don’t have another $15 million a year to throw at a #2 CB, because we’re already top-3 payroll, and need $ to keep some of Gallery/Huff/Bush/Satele.
And even if we signed a top CB, how does that help stop the run or confuse opposing O-coordinators/QBs? Wishful thinking.
Unless Gannon is sporting us big leads, we’ll continue to suck at defending the run as we have in the past 15 years.
December 27th, 2010 at 7:45 pm
#8 is Philly, no idea what they employ. I think it’s a blitzing d with zone behind it, some man.
#9 is ATL watching them run zone right now.
#10 is SF 3/4 zone/man combo.
I got the point after 7 so stopped there.
It’s a new NFL. Have to run a mix of zones and man to confuse opponents.
December 27th, 2010 at 7:47 pm
Alex,
The Raider defensive scheme is not changing. Not as long as Al Davis is in charge.
The 2nd cornerback would help shutdown those 3rd and long plays. A good 2nd CB could tackle.
Let’s face it. the Defense is about beating your man. Unitl they get that 2nd guy…the Raider defense will continue to be victimized all the way down the field
December 27th, 2010 at 7:56 pm
if u play a 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 RB set, i think Man-to-Man works.
Nnamid on one guy, Champ on the other, and another CB on the 3rd wide. Mike Mitchell Covering TE, and huff deep to clean up mess.
send the other 7 guys in, with one covering RB(wouldnt matter, if he ran, blitz, if he didnt, back away)
December 27th, 2010 at 7:58 pm
It’s sooo stupid to keep saying we couldn’t run the ball, when Dmac got 11 carries and Bush got 3.
thank u sir. dmc wasnt even allowed to be the ultimate force we needed him to be. there were several times when we needed td’s and dmc didnt get the ball. sometimes he wasnt on the field. we never saw dmc and bush in the backfield 2gether. huejack made some strides but he was a piece of sh!t inside the redzone and in particular inside the 10. how the hell do we justify him having only 7 rushing td’s? if dmc didnt break away some long runs he didnt get a chance to score which is pathetic.
KK, unless you can’t count, you’re wrong.
If you’re dumb enough to count the passes at the end of the quarter when we had less than a minute left, you’re a lost cause.
If you count the 20 passes Campbell threw in the final two drives, you’re a lost cause.
December 27th, 2010 at 8:10 pm
Armond,
you’re mad that we used 240 pound Bush inside the 10,
instead of the lighter guy with an injury history that had fumbling problems the last few seasons?
You sure?
Is a flat out lie.
We’re tied for 2nd in the NFL in rushing TDs.
You sure you want to bash Hue for his lack of DMac TDs?
Did this stop being a team game at some point?
December 27th, 2010 at 8:14 pm
Now, watch Cable bemoan the fact that they need to get back to their idenity and run the football, watch.
December 27th, 2010 at 8:14 pm
KK,
in your weird universe,
what happened in the first two drives?
On earth, we ran the ball 3 of our first 6 plays, then had 3 more plays, then the 1st quarter was over.
December 27th, 2010 at 8:15 pm
Run it successfully so you can keep running it? Sure.
Run it for the sake of getting “rush attempts” higher, when down two scores in the 4th quarter.
No.
December 27th, 2010 at 8:15 pm
When you run 9 plays in one quarter,
it’s hard to get lots of rush attempts.
I’m sorry if that math is too hard for you.
December 27th, 2010 at 8:16 pm
Again,
You guys are dissecting things too much.
The Raiders are improving about as fast as can be expected.
The big deal was trimming some of the dead weight and faux favorites off the roster and playing the better players.
The coaching is always going to be slightly behind at best…flawed players…and a rigid scheme.
The team has to make incremental change and win the way the owner wants it done.
December 27th, 2010 at 8:17 pm
2nd quarter
3 runs in first 5 plays.
We had a whopping 2 possessions in the 2nd quarter, ran the ball 9 times, then had a 1-minute offense.
What are you ^&*&%ing about?
December 27th, 2010 at 8:18 pm
the bigger tell in that play by play is about 6 runs up the middle for 39 yards.
December 27th, 2010 at 8:18 pm
For me Cable lost his job yesterday, period! How can you go into this game with such an ass backwards game plan! For the majority of the year This teams identity has been to RUN the ball!! Cable agrees with Hue (which I also have a problem with) that how we should beat the colt is to dink and dunk them to death….WTF why has it been so hard for this coach and staff to see that our strength in “O” is the Run. For that reason alone I believe Cable is gone, and get ready for the Hue Jackson era!!!!!!!!!
December 27th, 2010 at 8:19 pm
What year have we won the way the owner wants it done?
From all reports he wasn’t enthused with Gruden wanting Gannon.
Shoot, Gruden had to run Jeff George out of town and won games with Donald Hollas instead.
December 27th, 2010 at 8:19 pm
You don’t give up running the football after the 2nd possession, dumbass.
December 27th, 2010 at 8:20 pm
Davis-way = Aaron Brooks, Kerry Collins, Jamarcus Russell, Billy Joe Hobert.
We’ve only won when a coach does it his way.
December 27th, 2010 at 8:21 pm
KK,
I’m sorry you don’t understand the difference between the 2nd possession and the 2nd quarter
when we came out running the ball 3 of the first 5 plays in the 2nd quarter. Then 9 times total in 20 2nd quarter plays before the 1-minute drill.
December 27th, 2010 at 8:22 pm
Watching Saints-Falcons and seeing some pretty good DB play makes me long for the old days when the Raiders were owners of the defensive backfield. It ain’t that way today (!!!), and it’s needed for them to truly step up.
December 27th, 2010 at 8:23 pm
Also KK,
I’m sorry we didn’t run the ball 2 times in a row after we were sacked on 1st down late in the 2nd quarter.
That would have added rushing attempts to your pretty stat.
Remember when we went man-to-man 3rd preseason game last year (the one starters play deep and try hard) and he sliced us for like 45 points? Awesome.
December 27th, 2010 at 8:27 pm
Why does Hue abandon the run? We all know what happens to Campbell when that happens.
I like Hue but sometimes his play calling is as consistant as JC’s decisions.
December 27th, 2010 at 8:31 pm
In the 4th quarter, down 2 scores, the Raiders passed on 18 of their final 20 plays, culminating in their only TD.
That’s why the total run vs pass #s are whacked.
Before that, the game plan was balanced enough
(15 rushes, 22 passes) despite having to throw after 1st down sacks, and us getting our butts kicked every time we ran and giving the ball back to Manning after punting (not a great strategy).
THE END
December 27th, 2010 at 8:33 pm
Raiders for Life,
if you really want an answer,
Hue abandoned the run in the 4th quarter when down 2 scores
(18 passes in final 20 plays)
because it’s stupid to run in that situation when you are averaging 2 yards per rush.
December 27th, 2010 at 8:34 pm
At least SnB understands the scheme. You guys can complain all you want to, but the basic Raider defense isn’t going anywhere and that basic defense requires two top-level cornerbacks to succeed. We have one, and paying a guy like Champ Bailey top dollar to come in here and make a difference is a lot less crazy than paying a first-round draft choice the same or more money to maybe make one. Acknowledging the facts that we don’t have a first-rounder this year and that we have two PI machines opposite Asomugha it makes perfect sense to me to pay that money to lock down a critical position on our defense.
I’m not even going to address the comments that suggest that doing that won’t help the run defense, because they just aren’t very well thought out.
December 27th, 2010 at 8:37 pm
Edward,
it ALREADY went somewhere.
Willie Shaw ran zone plenty of times here. One of Woodson’s few INT Tds was in a zone coverage against the Cardinals.
Chuck Bresnahan carried some of those zone coverages after Shaw left.
Marshall has run more of it this year than the last 7 years combined.
If he’s around next year, it will continue to develop.
December 27th, 2010 at 8:38 pm
Alex, your conjecture is your own business.
—————————————-
But these are the facts:
#2 Rushing Team vs #28 Rushing Defense. Campbell passes the ball 42 times.
Experienced Sacking DE’s against our green OT’s. Campbell passes the ball 42 times.
One of the best home-run hitters in the game, get’s 11 carries.
One of the best backup runners in the league get’s 3 carries.
In a 5 point game, to boot.
So we were gashed up the middle of our defense on run plays all year, and had runners bounce runs outside and streak down the sidelines while man-to-man corners raced downfield with their receivers,
because our LCB isn’t that good.
Got it.
How can Jackson abandon DMAC, our best playmaker?
11 Carries?
C’mon man.
December 27th, 2010 at 8:46 pm
Alex,
I’m talking about the basic Raider defense. We both know where the directive on that comes from, and we both know he’s not changing his mind. Of course a DC is going to riff on it sometimes (some more than others), but the basic tenets of the Raider defense are man-to-man coverage in the secondary and natural pressure with the front four.
The Raiders play more man-to-man coverage than anyone in the league, even with Marshall switching things up from time to time. That isn’t going to change, and until we get another good corner it’s not going to work very well when it really needs to.
December 27th, 2010 at 8:46 pm
Michael Bush 3 carries? C’mon man.
And Willie Shaw was fired, by the way, essentially because he wouoldn’t play it the way the owner wanted it played.
What’s more important; the Raider players being “happy” or winning a championship?
Jimmy Johnson “made life miserable” for Dallas when they lost. According to Michael Irvin “losing wasn’t an option”. Ken Norton said he “didn’t know how to take it” when Jimmy got in his face. Nobody had gotten in his face like that before except his dad.
Yes, that team had loads of talent, but that’s what everyone says about the Raiders every game; “boy there’s no question this Raider team has tons of talent” they say.
I like Cable. He’s a very likable, fuzzy kind of guy, and I wish him all the happiness and success in the world, but…I want to see a coach who doesn’t send the message that it’s okay to lose. “Don’t worry bout it guys, we’ll get’em next week. You guys are playing well. Keep your chins up gents. We’re getting close with this deal”.
I don’t know if being this “players coach” is such a great thing. They love him. So what.
It is NOT okay to blow games you should win.
They/we whomever talks about this big “culture change” that Cable brought in, but did he really? The one big “culture change” I wanna see is less toleration of losing. That factor has remained consistent the past 8 years.
December 27th, 2010 at 8:57 pm
Formula for Raiders success (take it from someone who has watched DMAC tote the rock since HS):
DMAC MUST get 24-30 touches per game — 15-18 carries, 5-8 Wildcat plays RUN PROPERLY (must have a motion man as an option — Ford, Bey, or Murphy) with Bush in the backfield, and 4-5 receptions. DMAC MUST get ALL the work in the red zone, whether it is the 18-yard-line or the 1-foot-line, PERIOD!
This formula will ensure that DMAC will be the league’s most productive, explosive RB, which will help Oakland’s Raiders. This formula will deliver a minimum of 2-3 HRs and 150 yards of total offense per game.
Durability / injuries a concern with that workload? Shouldn’t be. We’re talking 15-18 carries (he currently averages 17.4), and the Wildcat and receiving work will get him and others in space.
He’s by far the Raiders’ best offensive player, maybe the best in the NFL if he is used properly.
December 27th, 2010 at 9:07 pm
Alex7, NFL games are hard to judge by numbers alone. When you look at 11 carries for DMAC and 42 passes for JC against INdy’s D, it looks like Hue took the day off. But as you pointed out, about half of those pass attempts came late when the run was no longer an option trailing by two TDs.
Problem with you thinking is how quickly Oakland gave up on pounding the ball inside. The opening KO return for TD kept the Raiders in the game the entire first half, when more should have been done on the ground directly challenging the Colts’ front seven.
Also, there is no way in hell Bush is more effective in the red zone, inside the 10-yard line, or inside the 1-yard line than DMAC. DMAC is an end zone hound and always has been. Bush is a 240-pound tip-toer who otherwise is a decent backup, but he should not be getting carries in winning minutes down near the goal-line. DMAC can score it in so many ways down there, and if you prove that week in and week out, then that gives the D more to think about.
Bush failed way too many times inside the 1 this year, and really, most of his team-leading 7 TDs were either ingarabge time of blowouts OR they were runs that and scrub in the league could have finsihed after DMAC did all the heavy lifting.
I know I’ll get crucified for calling Bush out a bit here, because all the Raiders love him, but he is not the caliber back that DMAC is, and the Raider’s brainstrust that has convinced themselves that he is a better runner in goal-line situations need to go back and watch DMAC’s career film inside the 5-yard-line.
Hell, even this season DMAC has been more effective by the percentages when you compare his attempts to Bush’s inside the 10-yard line.
December 27th, 2010 at 9:08 pm
I will admit that I’ve seen more zone than I have in a long time. I will also make the observation that we’re not very good at it. I will make a further observation that when we are forced to rely on Stanford Routt or Chris Johnson to cover someone man-to-man at a critical time that I am often disappointed in the result.
As to whether it will “continue to develop”, I would say that time will tell. I think Marshall played zone at times because he didn’t have confidence in whomever was playing opposite (or in place of, when he was injured) Asomugha. Top ten pass defenses are not uncommon for the Raiders, regardless of who’s coaching the defense. This team has had its best success when both corners could be relied upon heavily. As I said, I’m not arguing for the scheme. I’m just saying that it is what it is, and it requires a certain skill level at both cornerback posaitions to succeed.
December 27th, 2010 at 9:09 pm
KK
The most successful teams in the league know who they are and what they have. The Raiders still are figuring out what they have with DMAC. With Ford on board, he is the perfect guy to run the Widlcat with DMAC and Bush. And I’m not talking about that garbage they tried down in Jacksonville.
For it to work like it did at Arkansas, you must have an option in motion timing his intersection with DMAC at the snap. DMAC must have a pass option in this formation, and I’m not talking about that trash they tried against KC. They are not running the Wildcat properly, but if they did, the 71-yard TD you saw from Ford against Denver when DMAC was the run fake would be more prevelant.
I promise you that Oakland potentially has the most productive RB in the league, but he has got to get more touches. He has only two games with at least 20 carries since the hamstring injury in Week 4. Not enough.
Oakland has fallen too much in love with this NFL-chic 2-RB system, when really they could still work Bush onto the field with DMAC in Widlcat 5-8 plays, and with DMAC in the slot 3-4 plays. This way, the get the most out of the 5-6 carries that Bush is going to get, plus the up DMAC’s touches without actually asking him to pound the rock more than 18-20 times as the regular ball carrier.
I’m a lifetime Cowboys fan, but have never made the commitment to go to a game and the Big D is only 4 hours away from LR, yet I’m now making twice the trek for the Raiders. I used to want to see DMAC with that star on the helmet, but he looks too damn good in silver and black!
Teams go with 2 running backs because they are trying to extend the life of the primary back…and also keep a fresh guy late in games.
Minnesota drafted the kid from Stanford in the 2nd round….Atlanta has a strong #2…Bush wasn’t durable enough to take the bulk of work..
DMAC better have a strong 2nd…especially for a guy that couldnt much get on the field the last TWO YEARS!
Sir dennis is absolutely correct about the wildcat. In reality the wildcat is just the zone read option. Lots of movement coming off the snap and have a multitude of directions to go with the ball.
I’ve said it all year long that this guy is a stat whore. He reminds me of Corey Maggette in the NBA. Corey gets 20+ ppg but his team never wins. You never hear JC takes responsibility for any poor plays after any game and even the SF game. JC knows how to play the system and that is why Al got suckered for the trade. That is why he’d rather dump off for 2 yds on 4th and 6 against Tenn or 3rd and 11 secs to go in Jax.
December 28th, 2010 at 1:34 am
A good OC finds a way to get your best offensive weapon more touches or playfakes through him. In the first Denver SB win, TD started having migranes during the game and couldnt even see. The rat asked him to just line up and let him run a playaction through him and they got the TD.
How many times have we witnessed SD beating us late in the 4th qtr with LT breaking out a long run after being kept in check all game long? Someone pointed out yesterday that Jax stuck to their run and finally broke our back. Hue failed us miserably this year with the inability to make adjustments and he can walk for all I care.
December 28th, 2010 at 3:18 am
All in all a good season. The offense could be better in terms of using the speed that we have. With the poor offensive line that we have screens could help esp. with MCfadden, Ford and potentially DHB being speed burners.
Hue Jax got too cute at times and that cost us big. With this young offense and new QB it was a strech to call those IMO.
To Campbell’s credit/defense, how many times did this Oline get QBs injured this season? Grads knocked out twice, Campbell knocked out of the game once.
December 28th, 2010 at 3:22 am
Under these conditions I say Campbell was good. No go-to receiver, no line, injured TE, poor/cute play-calling.
December 28th, 2010 at 3:31 am
The Defense seemed to let up toward the end of the season. Although there were some injuries. Aso, Seymore, CJ and Mclain, towards the end. Maybe a depth issue or maybe a scheme issue.
Would liked to have seen what Howard could have done in coverage with MClain at MLB. Maybe he could have helped with our problems covering TEs. Did not like the all-out blitz against Colts in the redzone; breakdown in Jax.
December 28th, 2010 at 3:39 am
Special Teams was a major disappointment with the exception of Ford. Jano missed again in the clutch (Ariz Ind)and for whatever reason his not creating touchbacks cost us big in games. He seemed to have a knack for kicking short right after we got important scores(MIA JAX).
He did score alot this year tho which may be an indiciation of how poor our redzone offense was and may be the reason for shorter kicks.
December 28th, 2010 at 3:49 am
If we can get Campbell some improvement on the Oline and and get a go-to receiver, we could go far on offense.
If we can get some depth on Defense; Safety, D-Line and DB , we could can push for playoffs. McClain has great upside, he already improved our D. Seymore has been good at times dominant.
On ST, Jano either needs to improve in the clutch, or get more Touchbacks, or restructer his contract. I would also like it if coverage improved where there wasnt a TB. 1-out of those four will win us atleast one-two more games next year
Should Chiefs play starters Sunday?
The Kansas City Chiefs are going to the playoffs regardless of whether or not they beat the visiting Oakland Raiders on Sunday, and regardless of whether or not they play their starters in the game.
Kansas City is either going to be the No. 3 or No. 4 seed. If the Chiefs win the game, they will be 11-5 and will be the No. 3 seed. If the Chiefs lose and the Colts beat Tennessee; the Chiefs will be the No. 4 seed. The Chiefs will host New York, Baltimore or Pittsburgh in the first round on Jan. 8 or Jan. 9.
Here are the pros and cons of Kansas City playing to win Sunday against Oakland, securing the No. 3 seed.
Pros
Momentum: The Chiefs would love to finish 11-5, by knocking off a rival, finishing the home season 8-0 and rolling into the playoffs.
New England factor: If the Chiefs are No. 4, they will be poised to play at the top-seed Patriots in the divisional round. If the Chiefs are the No. 3 seed and they win in the first round, they’ll play at the No. 2 seed in the divisional round. That will be at either Pittsburgh or Baltimore. Plus, if things got crazy and the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds both lost in the divisional round, the No. 3 seed would be next up on the pecking order to host a title game.
Cons
Injury: The Chiefs are pretty healthy right now and they’d love to go into the playoffs at full strength. You’d hate to see a key player get hurt just in the name of fighting for the No. 3 seed. A No. 2 seed and a first-round bye is one thing, but the difference between No. 3 and No. 4 isn’t overly great.
Rest: A little rest wouldn’t hurt anybody.
What if Singletary came here for our LB coach? And who did you want at #8? At least it wasn’t Campbell or Jacoby who the experts said that Al will pick at #8 and stole them in the 4th round. The DTs were gone. I think the only others were Iupatia and Davis who went to SF later…Anyways…
JFB,
Gary Brackett is 5″11″ 235 lbs – he went UNDRAFTED. he outplayed McBust by far on Sunday.
Post-draft Cable Q&A
Q: What’s your take on your late-round picks?
Cable: Yeah, Goethel excites me for the fact that he’s a true inside linebacker that’s a tough, downhill player. Just as important, he’s going to enhance our special teams. That gives us a real quality guy there.
I would think Goethel can have a real role on this football team.
December 28th, 2010 at 6:46 am
And as far as the height/weight/speed thing, Brackett is known as one of the fastest LB’s in the entire league. His height/weight was an issue, that’s why he went undrafted, has missed at least one game in 5 of his 8 career years, and why the Colts are always bottom-tier in the NFL in rushing defense on the season.
Goethel is not fast, or big, and got hurt in practice so don’t know how he compares.
JFB,
glad to see you’ve flushed that height/weight/speed philosophy down the toilet.
Wayne was a 1st rounder. Murphy was a 4th rounder. Wayne has Manning at QB and Murphy has Campbell, so I don’t see the comparison.
You can bank it that McClain will have a better career than Brackett. Not sure why you continue to close the book on Rolando after 15 games (it really took you zero games as your mind was made up at inception)
Besides the Colts rushing D has given up 2 less yards a game, lol.
Our top 10 MLB is anchoring a better than average total defense, and has vastly improved our overrall numbers and helped shave off 20 ypg on our rushing defense from 2009.
Raiders 13th (26th in 2009)
Colts 20th
by the way, as for the whole “McClain will get better” crowd:
Kirk Morrison had 116 (91 solo) tackles his rookie year.
Rolando McClain has 76 tackles (51 solo) so far this season with 1 game left.
From Jerry Mac on 12/20/2010:
With 71 tackles, McClain is tied for sixth among all NFL rookies and is second among linebackers, trailing Indianapolis outside linebacker Pat Angerer (78).
“My goal is 100 tackles each year so I’m not there yet. I’ve still got a long way to go but I’ve still got two games and I can make up some room,’’ McClain said.
Alex7, NFL games are hard to judge by numbers alone. When you look at 11 carries for DMAC and 42 passes for JC against INdy’s D, it looks like Hue took the day off. But as you pointed out, about half of those pass attempts came late when the run was no longer an option trailing by two TDs.
Problem with you thinking is how quickly Oakland gave up on pounding the ball inside. The opening KO return for TD kept the Raiders in the game the entire first half, when more should have been done on the ground directly challenging the Colts’ front seven.
Also, there is no way in hell Bush is more effective in the red zone, inside the 10-yard line, or inside the 1-yard line than DMAC. DMAC is an end zone hound and always has been. Bush is a 240-pound tip-toer who otherwise is a decent backup, but he should not be getting carries in winning minutes down near the goal-line. DMAC can score it in so many ways down there, and if you prove that week in and week out, then that gives the D more to think about.
Bush failed way too many times inside the 1 this year, and really, most of his team-leading 7 TDs were either ingarabge time of blowouts OR they were runs that and scrub in the league could have finsihed after DMAC did all the heavy lifting.
I know I’ll get crucified for calling Bush out a bit here, because all the Raiders love him, but he is not the caliber back that DMAC is, and the Raider’s brainstrust that has convinced themselves that he is a better runner in goal-line situations need to go back and watch DMAC’s career film inside the 5-yard-line.
Hell, even this season DMAC has been more effective by the percentages when you compare his attempts to Bush’s inside the 10-yard line.
They did the same thing last year with Morrison….the problem isn’t the MLB, the problem is that we don’t have a dominant NT who requires two blockers to stay on him during the entire run play. On run plays Kelly and Seymour simply do not command that much respect. The problem is that NT don’t grow on trees.
Our run D would vastly improve with a legit 350 lb NT sitting next to Kelly on the interior, and Seymour holding down the LDE position like we know he can. A little more zone coverage on likely running downs would help too. Difficult for our DBs to help on the outside when their backs are almost always turned to the LOS.
December 28th, 2010 at 7:27 am
McClain has been a tad disappointing at times against the run. No doubt.
He has been better than expected covering passes, and hopefully he can continue to improve in this area as well.
Curious to know if the Raiders have ever had a top 5 rushing defense.
I know back in the hay-day they played great coverage, intimidated WR’s, got turnovers and beat up QB’s.
But did they ever lead the league, or come close, in rushing defense?
Seems the “Raider System” of 1-1 matchups and man coverage is just not condusive to being an elite rushing D.
If McClain ever gets us into the top 10 in rushing defense they might as well create a bust for him in the HOF.
December 28th, 2010 at 7:38 am
Im not trying to sell McClain as the next Ray Lewis or Pat Willis but to call him a bust already is foolish. Give him a few years. I DO agree with Dakota that we need a true ‘big nast’ NT though. I wanted Larry Fitz, but was happy to be getting this all world LT from Iowa who never gave up a sack and would solidify the LT spot for 10-12 years…..but I wasn’t privy to the draft info I am now…but the Raiders should have know about his short arms and slow side to side speed.
More on Bush:
I’m not suggesting he is not a decent backup, but I also think he is being given too much credit here. He was the most productive Raider RB a season ago, but that is not saying much. You had 3 RBs then, which is really having minus-3.
Bush’s ypc are not good, and he has been average at best taking handoffs inside the 10- and 5-yard lines. Percentage-wise, DMAC has been better inside the 10 and 5.
I disagree with the idea that DMAC and Bush are the best 1-2 rushing combo. Looking within the division, KC has a better 1-2 combo. And I don’t think Bush should be given every 3rd or 4th series. Those are typically lost series every game. You take away the HR threat, and if you’ll look back since the Week 4 hammy injury, DMAC has carried the ball 20 times in only two games. This means Bush is getting too many snaps.
Bush would be better used in the Wildcat (again, if run properly) and with DMAC in the slot or motioning out of the FB position. And I would not use Bush in the red zone unless DMAC was hurt.
Those who point to DMAC’s issues staying healthy as a need for a quality backup are absolutely correct. That does not mean Bush has been used in a way that makes his production better and give defenses more to worry about when he is on the field. The rotation is jacked up, the red-zone thinking is plain dumb, and most of you are hung up on a few good games by a decent backup and now you are blinded into thinking you have two NFL starters on your roster.
Just look at Bush’s two biggest plays this season: a 55-yard catch-and-run that was a fluke ricochet that touched three other players traveling across the field v. Seattle, and a 24-yard run that was the result of JC improvising and pitching the ball to Bush to avoid a sack on a passing play against the Chargers.
Take away those two plays, and his anemic numbers paint a more realistic picture. Same thing with his TD production. Seriously, 1-yard runs on his 2nd and 3rd attempts at the goal line in garbage time or after DMAC does the grinding to get you there.
Again, I see value in the guy, just not the value the rest of you see.
December 28th, 2010 at 8:39 am
Why would anyone draft an OT and pass on a QB like Big Ben when we needed both positions.
We needed a S, DT, LB, OL, QB, and I think WR too.
We drafted a G!?!?
December 28th, 2010 at 8:47 am
White joined the Spokane Shock on October 15, 2010. He would go on to have a storybook season with 66 receptions for 925 yards with 18 touchdowns. He helped the Shock reach ArenaBowl XXIII where the Shock defeated the Tampa Bay Storm.
On August 24, 2010, White signed a contract with the Hartford Colonials of the UFL
OL and run-stoppers the biggest need for Raiders in the next draft. They do NOT need to draft another receiver! Too many young WRs on the roster now. They need to sign a vetern wideout with some ceiling left. This should be a decent QB draft, but the Raiders need a value pick, not a headliner.
December 28th, 2010 at 8:53 am
Our run D has been suspect for years now. Lets call it like it is.
Al Davis refuses to change the scheme. Until we change the scheme, or get a high powered offense that can score 30 points a game to force the other team to throw more than run, our D will not be top 10 against the run.
A stud NT will get us to TOP 15
after the draft Tom Cable was asked if we had done enough to address the crappy Run D. He said “we have a plan and you’ll like it”
Apparently moving a Pro Bowl DE to DT and drafting a Top 10 MLB wasn’t enough. I have seen enough of ShoNasty, Houston & the DB’s to know they aren’t the problem
How much would it help to replace Seymour with a rookie? Kelly isn’t going anywhere!
Wimbley & Groves are better OLB’s than anybody we’ve had there since Kirk Morrison. Do we really want to hand the job back to guys like Ricky Brown, Jon Alston, Robert Thomas, Sam Williams & Thomas Howard?
I would agree that UT/NT should be one of the most important positions in Al’s Scheme. We should have one of the most elite players’ at that position, right?
If Al does not believe in Blitzing and feels we should only bring pressure with his front four, then we need an animal at the NT/UT position who can stop the run and rush the passer.
As long as it’s Al’s Defense that the DC has to Run, we will continue to have problems. John Marshall is running the Defense that Al wants him to run, so another DC won’t make a differnce IMO.
Aside from a few games, they did well against the run when they weren’t giving up the 50 and 70 yards run.
Also, when you are running a lot of man on man, the DB take long to react to the run, so they don’t come up to stuff the way you would in some zone coverages.
A few things:
Gallery, good but not great, has to be brought back because the line needs some continuity. There will be at least one new starter on the line.
Bush is a good back-up, but can be replaced. He’s not in McFadden’s league.
It’s too early to rule on McClain. He had a decent rookie season and is likely to improve.
Seymour — dominant at times, invisible at others — is running out of gas and can’t be given a long-term, big-money deal.
Groves is a back-up. Wimbley should be a third-down pass rusher. We need new OLBs.
But the big question is who will be the starting QB on opening day next year. I expect it to be Campbell. I would prefer Carson Palmer.
In Cincinnati, Palmer has to be The Man. In Oakland, he could hand-off, rely on Zach Miller and only be asked to make 3-6 important downfield throws a game — which Campbell can’t do.
I like 4-3 man defense, but I don’t think we had/ have enough talent to run it.
We have good pass rushers and a good front 4, but we need more talent in the secondary. Nnamdi is great, Branch and Huff are avg/ solid starters, but we need another CB t make it work. Teams are taking advantage of that by avoiding Nnamdi, and getting a lot of yards from bad coverage from the other players.
In my opinion, whatever QB we put on the field will not matter, save for Michael Vick, because our o-line will allow too much pressure for most QBs. Forget about getting a new QB until you fix the o-line. If we can upgrade RT, RG and C, then a guy like McNabb or Palmer might be great. If Cable is still around and convinces Al to stick with those garbage guys, then we might as well keep Campbell….at least he can move a little bit, and he is younger and can take more punishment.
Fix the o-line and keep everything else the same and I think we are a playoff team….as long as Cable is gone of course.
He strikes me as the type of guy that will me a college HC or NFL consultant. Maybe work a booth or desk job like Brian Billick, Jon Gruden, Matt Millen & Herm Edwards
No love for ROMAC on this blog right now.
I see things differently. I see a rookie given tremendous responsibility, to get the defense set and audible into the right defense before every play based on the offensive set. ROMAC also has more responsibility than most Mike’s in a 4-3, due to the Raiders cover 1 (man) defense. I’ve seen him run stride for stride with these hybrid FB’S who line up single wide to the outside, whether it’s the Z, or X, he is all by himself.
I’ve been real surprised he hasn’t been burned for a TD against this TE, (Hybrid yet) he has the speed, ROMAC, is reading and not reacting fast enough to the ball.
I would think this offseason, he will be more comfortable and will have a years experience to react instinctively, then read and react as he is doing now.
Fix the o-line and keep everything else the same and I think we are a playoff team….as long as Cable is gone of course.
***
tough call. If we trash Cable, the O-Line goes with him
he has 95 percent approval in the locker room though and Al Davis is a players owner.
If Cable stays, so does the zbs and all those scrubs on the OL …
the Cable guy might be a good rah rah coach, but he’s a terrible personnel man. Why does he always try to paint a turd and serve it up as dessert? We need TALENT on the offensive line man!
I would not be surprised to see Bill Cowher replace John Fox in Carolina. use the 3 RB rotation of Stewart, Williams & Goodson. get Carson Palmer in free agency and revamp that defense with hard nosed blue collar 3-4 guys
I like 4-3 man defense, but I don’t think we had/ have enough talent to run it.
We have good pass rushers and a good front 4, but we need more talent in the secondary. Nnamdi is great, Branch and Huff are avg/ solid starters, but we need another CB t make it work. Teams are taking advantage of that by avoiding Nnamdi, and getting a lot of yards from bad coverage from the other players.
******************
Stanford Routt has the best completion percentage of any CB in the NFL taking more than 25% of the snaps as the starting CB at 38%, he isnt really an issue. What kills our secondary is the ticky tac PI and holding calls. I think our safeties need to improve though. Huff and Branch both make big plays, but both are victimized far too often IMO.
If this is a jab at a pro-bowl player on my team who I know personally, what is your beef?? I am sure you would not call Jon, his dad or his brothers this name without getting your A@S kicked! Find someone legit to pick on… thats the kinda sh#t we would expect from a Steelers fan, not one of ours… Maybe you should switch teams….
I think McClain has been a complete bust this year. He doesn’t have the motor to be an effective MLB (ala Matthews, Cushing) Both were dominant last year. McClain had 1 pick and not 1 caused fumble!!!! He is not a playmaker.
Just so we can quiet the RockStar down, I would like to see Goethel start at MLB in the KC game.
Then we can once and for all, find out how lost and ineffective Goethel plays.
Then we won’t have to hear RockStar pimp his old college room mate (Goethel) anymore!!!!!!
