He has seemed to let up a bit recently, but I still don’t think you’d ever see a coach/coordinator like Cowher, Belicheck (or one of his many minions), Dick LeBeau, or guys along those lines come aboard. The coaches Al brings aboard are hired because Al knows that at most, they’ll occasionally show different offensive or defensive looks. But they won’t completely revamp the schemes that Al put in place.

  • YoungAmerican

Not sure, I don’t know Tom Coughlin. We’ll talk about that when Al wants to hire him and he accepts or rejects the job.

If he’s willing to work with Al’s vertical passing game and Cover 0, then I don’t see why he wouldn’t come here, outside of the fact that he wouldn’t get paid like a head coach of his status normally does.

    [Comment From Steve Steve: ]
Colts played run well because rarely attempted it… and no rhythm when only 14 attempts with RBs in the whole game.

    jerrymac:
As long as you’re fine with running on second-and-12, third-and-9, and can live with the punt when you don’t get it. My guess is you wouldn’t like it much.

  • No Mas Diamante

Marty Mornhinweg might be a good HC canidate. deserves another chance. he would have done a lot better in Detroit if Millen wasn’t calling the shots.

Mike Martz might be worth another look..

Do you feel for the Raiders to get better,Al should hire a general manger?

jerrymac: I think that’s the 49ers you’re asking about . . . Al is the GM. He’s going to be the GM.
    —————————–
Jerry, that wasn’t the question, was it?

  • Just Fire Baby

Didnt’t Marty Morhinweg win the coin toss in OT, and elect to take the wind instead of the ball, with the opposing team going right down and kicking a FG?

That is about as bad as the four verticals!!

  • Just Fire Baby

KoolKell gets two questions answered and I got a big fat goose egg.

Guess he didn’t want to talk Jason Cantbell contract numbers.

I think Al is ready for some “legitimate” help. Forget the past, what have you seen the past few years?

Hue and Marshall are doing what THEY want to do. There is no denying that.

They are doing what they want in offensive and Defensive Scheme that Al wants.

Huff should stay. He hasn’t lived up to his draft status and gives up a big play here and there, but I find it hard to believe that another guy is going to come in off the street and be able to hold up with the kind of responsibility the Raiders put on their FS.

The Raiders should attempt to sign Huff, and keep Stevie Brown waiting in the wings for at least another season.

If Huff opts to leave, sign FA FS Jarrad Page and let him compete with Brown for the starting FS spot.

Branch and Mitchell are not “center field” type players. It would be disastrous to plug one of them in at FS.

    ^^^^^^^^
Getting rid of Huff without picking up someone better to replace him would be stupidity.

Branch and Mitchell would get LOST playing center field.

  • McRaider5150

I do think Hue has been able to do more on is own than Marshall.

  • JLofty

Is it just me or is Campbell totally unaware how to burn a CB-10-15yrd cushion?
Colts gave us that on MANY occasions Sunday and NOT once did Soup stop and throw that bubble/audible. Once Jacoby and Bey were on that side with Ford’s man totally off-screen and Bey’s 12 yrds deep. So Ford gets a lead blocker and a 12 yrd head start and Campbell doesn’t even look at it.
Watched Brees exploit that a few times last night. WTF?

  • Just Fire Baby

    Big college bowl tonight.

Two of the top 7 QB prospects playing in Mizzou-Iowa.

I am ready for the future.

  • Just Fire Baby

Soup’s one audible didn’t go so hot.

He thought DHB would run a quick hitch, DHB did not, it was almost picked 6′d, and DHB looked like he wanted to punch Campbell.

Might as well just stick with what play call goes into the helmet.

  • Just Fire Baby

It does tell me something, Jerry didn’t want to roll up his sleeves today and took on the softballs.

I agree, but it’s not all Campbell. That is on the the WR’s too.

I have also been begging for the coached to put in more WR screens and short hitch routes. Our wr also donot do a lot of double move. That’s another way to beat a 7-12 yard cushin.

  • DKnight007

At this point…I think John Fox would be upgrade over the old timer John Marshall.

Fox would probably make adjustments a whole lot faster and would probably use more 3-4 looks and blitz more.

We would need to hope he can get these guys to stop the run more consistently also.

  • CDERaider

McClain has been underwhelming . First of all, he needs to shed bodyfat, period. Work out like mad in the offseason and come back more muscular and focused on improving his run gaps and pass defense – he is off *way* too many times. Running into the line at the wrong gap or getting blocked out of the play way too easily – maybe that’s just fatigue because he is not in good enough shape – you can see him huffing all the time. We need to bring in 2-3 addition LB’s to compete – there’s always good ones available later in the draft and in FA.

Our Oline needs to improve drastically. Did you see the amount if time Manning gets? Yes he gets rid of the ball quick but we weren’t even close to him all day – and all the good QB’s have very good lines. Veldheer is solid and could be a great one someday. Gallery needs to be let go – he is avg at best when he’s ‘on’ and is injury prone – lets bring in a young stud to put next to Veldheer.

We need to groom and start BCampbell. Hopefully at RT – he is a monster waiting to be unleashed and would be a force. Mario is a free agent but if he can be resigned for a reasonable amount, he should be retained as the backup LT and/or starting RT if BCampbell is the RG instead. Barnes is a decent backup for both tackle spots and guard duty when needed. Satele is *ok* when the Guards are playing well, but I would love to see an upgrade at that position at least make him earn a starting spot in camp against some new blood.

We need to acquire at least 4 new OL (2 in draft, 2 in FA) in here to compete with who we have now and get this line to where it needs to be to be to give JC the time to throw and DMac the space to make big plays.

Add a veteran goto WR, a run stopping DT tackle, another TE and a throw in a young, quick RB I think we’ll be good next year.

  • Just Fire Baby

    CDERaider,

Curious as to why you think Campbell is a “monster waiting to be unleashed”?

The team doesn’t even trust him enough to block on extra points, and he was not very good in the preseason.

McClain is a ROOKIE and he is a BEAST!

Can wait to see him develop into even more of a BEAST as he matures and keeps learning the game.

CLEARLY the defense let us down this year!

    DK007,

the Panthers run defense is 23rd (better than 29th!) but the Raiders have 40 sacks so far this season and Carolina only has 30 …

  • http://www.pro-football-reference.com/ KoolKell

McClain is a rookie, and MLB’s need to be able to read quickly & correctly.

But in week 16 he was getting walled off constantly.

  • J Hill

    JFB,

What is taking you so long to give me your thoughts on Matt Ryan last night?

Defense was as consitant as ever. Turner get taken out of the game, and Matt Ryan wasn’t looking so hot, was he? Especially with that pass rush in his face and defenders draped all over him.

  • Just Fire Baby

McClain is a big dude, but only 21.

Still has a little bit of that young guy pencil-neck to him and seems a little slight in the chest area.

Next year in camp will be big for his growth. Does he show up in great shape ready to kick tail, or still telling fables of how the SEC is just as good as the NFL?

If he shows up with a gut and a mohawk, I think we will know which way that one goes.

  • RaiderRockstar

    JFB,

    Contract Information for Jason Campbell

    4/24/2010: Signed a two-year, $7.74 million contract. The deal included a $100,000 workout bonus. 2010: $3.14 million, 2011: $4.5 million, 2012: Free Agent

  • CDERaider

    124. Look at the dude – compare him to other MLB’s in the league .. his lower body is way too fat and he has no definition in the arms. He’s constantly huffing and puffing whenever he’s in the game – he has less tackles than Morrison ever had for a season – he’s too soft, period and needs to improve, starting physically. Because our run D has not improved and our safeties are leading the team in tackles again and that’s on the LB’s

  • Just Fire Baby

    J,

Matty is 12-3, and took a 3-13 team to the playoffs in his first year. Last night was a huge stage against the world champs. As they say in boxing, you have to beat the champ, they couldn’t quite get the knockout blow.

After the obvious top 3 (Peyton, Brady, Brees), Ryan is in the mix for the next tier along with Rivers, Cutler, Vick and Rodgers.

What do you make of them having a RT who was cut by 4 teams and has played for 5 teams in 5 years? Or a 7th round pick at C who has played for 12 years? Two undrafted FA’s on the right-side?

In other words, he looked like Jason Campbell last night?

  • CDERaider

    129. Yep – he had the ‘been there, done that’ attitude coming in from ‘Bama – he was the leader on a great Defense but had lots of help. The NFL is much different, despite what he has said on countless occasions. I still think he can be really good but he needs to have a great Sophomore camp. Biekert will be all over him in the offseason so I expect him to come back leaner and meaner and hopefully we can get 2 OLB’s who can be difference makers too to complement.

  • Just Fire Baby

Clue me in when Campbell is involved in as important of a game as last night on that type of stage.

I think Campbell would have had to pee 13 times before kickoff.

    Will do!

It’ll be right around the time we have a defense like Atlanta that tends to hold it’s opponent’s under 21 pts.

  • RaiderRockstar

    Jhill,

2 OLB’s would be replacements for Ricky Brown & Thomas Howard … so I agree!

    Bruce Davis is also done.

Quentin Groves is just average, but I’ll keep him another year. Sam Williams too

  • Just Fire Baby

Every rookie improves from year 1 to year 2. Hell even Jamarcus took some decent steps in year 2, high on cough-syrup half the time.

McClain will improve next year, but the telling part of his career will be if he improves from year 2 to year 3.

If not, than the B-word will get thrown around. For now, he is 4 tackles behind Pat Angerer (a good LB prospect himself) for the lead of all rookie LB’s.

  • CDERaider

    133. Goethel was a real stud in college but he appears to be too slow in what plays he has been in so far. The coaches really like him and he does have a good resume so I have hope that maybe its because he’s not in playing shape due to his back injury and was out for so long. I say let’s see what he does in the offseason, and absolutely let him compete for the MLB spot in camp and also bring a Vet in to push for the spot too. Our D scheme absolutely *requires* that the LB’s, especially MLB play well by stopping the run otherwise our safeties are too exposed, we can’t win consistently when Branch, Huff, Mitchel, et al has to make all those tackles.

  • J Hill

    JFB,

If we ran the type of offense we ran the last 5 minutes of the Indy game, what type of numbers do you see Campbell putting up?

3 WRs, Miller off the LOS, DMac in the backfield, Campbell in the shotgun.

Matt Ryan went 15/29 for 148 yards and 1 TD. also had 26 rush yards on 4 “carries”

sorry JFB, but those numbers just SCREAM Jason Campbell to me.

JCamp went 29/42 with 231 yards and 1 TD. also had 10 rush yards on 3 “carries” (and he didn’t have a Roddy White at WR)

Well when we only have one LB on the field in that BIG nickel, the S are going to and are expected to make a lot of tackles.

More evidence of Marshall doing his thing! This BIG Nickle is NOT an Al Davis scheme.
