Seymour, Asomugha, Lechler make Pro Bowl
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, December 28th, 2010 at 4:02 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Defensive tackle Richard Seymour, cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha and punter Shane Lechler were the Raiders’ selections to the Pro Bowl Tuesday.
Seymour, who was at his most dominant earlier this season, is a reserve interior lineman with Baltimore’s Haloti Ngata and New England’s Vince Wilfork as the starters.
Asomugha is a starter at cornerback along with the Jets’ Darrelle Revis, with New England rookie Devin McCourty the third corner.
Running back Darren McFadden did not crack the top three running backs, with Jacksonville’s Maurice Jones-Drew (the starter), Houston’s Arian Foster and Kansas City’s Jamaal Charles getting the nod.
Place kicker Sebastian Janikowski, who set a Raiders scoring record with 135 points, lost out to Baltimore’s Billy Cundiff.
The Raiders announced that defensive tackle Tommy Kelly, tight end Zach Miller, McFadden and Janikowski were named as alternates, although it was not divulged at what level. All would have a chance to go to be added to the team if someone drops out because of injury.

It’s a great evening to be a Raiders fan. Isn’t it?
The Raiders have the right man for the job, for this time in their history. Harbaugh MAY be a great NFL coach, but he isn’t one right now…and the players have already expressed their feelings to the core, with zero ambiguity.
Cable’s the man the players THINK they need to keep the ball rolling up that big ol’ hill. We’re so close to being a Playoff team, they can taste it. If the players REALLY believe it, I gotta believe it too.
There’s no reason to disassemble this coaching staff, especially based on who MIGHT be available to replace them at the top. This isn’t to say there isn’t room for improvement on all staffs…but Cable and his O/D-Coordinators need to stay right where they are.
If Harbaugh’s ready for an NFL HC job, it shouldn’t be for one in Oakland in 2011.
December 28th, 2010 at 4:53 pm

No thanks to the Gruden thing (again)…he leaves rough wakes. Despite the despair of missing the Playoffs, this ship is sailing smoothly with Cable at the helm.
And, admit it…you drool sometimes, too. A little too much Jack & Coke, maybe? Boxers around your ankles, face-down in the neighbor’s petunias?

Jon Gruden and Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh are atop York’s wish list for a potential coach.

Promote Hue to HC
Bring in an OC/OL coach that runs the system Hue likes instead of that ZBS BS.
I have to imagine Hue will be a better play caller in his 2nd year.
Bring in an Asst HC/DC!
December 28th, 2010 at 5:14 pm
Great year to be a Raider fan! A coaching change would be a setback – Monte Poole – put your spoon away – this years Raiders are young, exiting and worth every penny I paid for my tickets – I went to every home game this year feeling that the Raiders can win.Didn’t feel that way last year.

December 28th, 2010 at 5:22 pm
AJ Smith: You’ve been NORVED!!!
December 28th, 2010 at 5:25 pm
Hue won’t be a better play caller as HC than he is as Coordinator. He needs to ripen as a coach yet — enthusiasm isn’t the only requisite for inspiring men.
Imagine this team starting 1-3 under another HC next year. Disaster for the team, the players, the new coach. Instead of starting fresh…with Cable, we now have an EXPECTATION of being a winner in 2011. And that’s even with the inconsistent play at QB and WR we have.
We no longer have a hope of “turning the corner”…we have an expectation of winning again. That’s a pretty good feeling.
December 28th, 2010 at 5:25 pm
You guys post like new coaches makes a huge difference at 1220 HarborBay Parkway. Al picks the coaches from the HC, Coords, on down. Al picks the roster, Al does the drafting, and Al determines the schemes to a large extent. Often it appears Al determines who plays.
So a coach is going to make a huge difference? Bullcracky.
December 28th, 2010 at 5:25 pm
IF Luck stays at Stanford, so does Harbaugh..imo
December 28th, 2010 at 5:28 pm
Some of you guys are way too happy for a 3 game swing(or 2 games if Oakland loses this week).
5-11 to 7-9 is not much different to me.
Too many missed opportunities, penalty yards, and points given up for my taste.
Without McFadden and Ford, this team was the same ol’ sh!t.
The schedule was weak. 12 games against teams at or below .500 (KC twice, Steelers, and Colts only games against winning teams)
THAT IS NOT IMPROVEMENT!
Time for Cable to go away.
December 28th, 2010 at 5:29 pm
with Cable, we now have an EXPECTATION of being a winner in 2011.

According to who?
If we go into next year as is, I’d disagree as would most.
December 28th, 2010 at 5:31 pm
Marshall had a rough few games, but still has this Defense playing at a higher level than they have in many years. The more we get to know these young players, the more we’ll see Marshall get creative with his schemes in future.
The Defense’s shortcomings this year, including the play-calling, aren’t worthy of Marshall losing his job…but, I’m sure he’ll be getting/has gotten a friendly hello from the Old Man about it.
December 28th, 2010 at 5:37 pm
What about DHB? Travesty!
December 28th, 2010 at 5:37 pm
Yes, good ol’ Mr. Davis. A guy who’s ego is so inflated that he couldn’t deal with a coach who turned his moribund franchise around actually getting credit and recognition. Sacrebleu! And, how about that classy move of cussing Jon out in front of his own father. Yep, that’s our lovable Al. I’m glad you like Cable, though. Cuz he’s a goner. P.S. Yes, I am currently drooling with my pants down That’s only because I’m watching porn…at work, but that’s beside the point.
December 28th, 2010 at 5:38 pm
As mentioned above…there are now plenty of people who walk into the stadium and expect the team to win (or at least battle to the bitter end). And the players do, too. Denying there is a huge difference in the 2010 Raiders and the 2009 Raiders is taking a narrow view of things.
Major change can never happen if the players don’t buy-in…and the Raiders players have bought what Cable’s selling. They had their chances this year, but next year is really theirs for the taking…and they finally, truly, realize it.

That’s the ‘Wish List’ – it ain’t gonna happen. Niners still think after all these years of being pathetic they have one of the premier franchise’s and top tier coaches want to come there – they haven’t been even close to premier since the mid-nineties and even then it was the tail end of their glory days – when Policy was kicked out it was over. Their ownership is more screwed up than ours even.
They won’t get an A-lister. Harbaugh, if he wants to leave Stanford which I doubt, can have any job in the league if he wants – why would he want to go to the Niners? They might get a tier-2 retread or an up and comer – I’m sure HueJack has already thrown his name in the pot.

*************************
Really have the ST been that bad?
We got 3 TD’s on returns, only given up 1.
Recovered 4 fumbles, only lost two.
Than you have the SD two blocked punts game and also our kicker leads the AFC in points and our punter made the Pro Bowl to boot.
Yes, punt returns have been bad, the Jacoby fumble killed us, and we have given up the occasional big return like every team.
But there is no doubt, IMO, we won the ST battle against our opponents for the year. Not ever week, but for the year.

What discipline is lacking in Oakland? Are there players out of control? Last I heard, everybody was in-line for the first time in years. And…consistency starts by having a consistent coaching staff.
The players want Cable to stay. Want to ruin a locker room in a hurry? Toss their stated overwhelming favorite for an unknown (or known) coaching commodity. Coaching is about getting your team to respond…and Cable has this team responding.

Looking back on the year, I will give credit to Jason Campbell definately in one area. He is the king at finding the 5 yard pass that will end up getting 25+ yards. He does deserve credit for that.
If there is a 5 yard pass that could get big yards, Campbell is the man for the job.

That said it wont be if we do zer0.0. We MUST at least address the following come January 3.
0. Continuity. Keep Cable and Hue. Marshall? Maybe not. Would love a TOUGH DC that refuses to pander to the old man. Ok, I’l settle for a toughER DC with at least SOME latitude beyond what Marshall has.
1. Look to upgrade the QB. Campbell and or Grads can battle it out for backup. I’d prefer a vet but not sure if one exits. I’d like to see Palmner given a fresh start here. Esp with our gr8 running game.
2. GET C. BAILEY. This lone would help our D (incl run D) enormously. C.B. is still very capable shut down corner.
3. Sign Steve Smith or some other solid WR vet.
4. Last but not least consider hiring a DC with 3-4 experience. FIX THE RUN D ALREADY! Add a Henderson-esque NT and a run stufffer ILB (draft and/or Free Agency)
Do these 5 things and I think we have a shot at being an elite team. For real.

DMAC had a Pro Bowl season, but 7 of the NFL’s top rushers were from the AFC, including the league’s top 4 rushers.
The two missed games kept his rushing TOTALS below the others, but his total scrimmage yards (4th), scrimmage yards per game (2nd), and average rushing yards per game (4th) scream Pro Bowl. His 5.2 ypc were 3rd best among backs with a minimum of 100 carries and a minimum of 10.0 rushes per game. First in carries of 20-plus-yards, 1st in carries of 30-plus yards, 2nd in carries of 40-plus-yards, and his 6 100-yard rushing games were 5th best in the league.
He was the league’s only RB with a 4 TD game (Week 7 at Denver), he was AFC Offenisve PLayer of the Week (Week 7), and his outburst in Jacksonville made him one of only 3 players since 1950 with 2 rushing TDs of at least 35 yards each PLUS 1 receiving TD of at least 60 yards in a single game.
It also hurt DMAC that his TD numbers were not on par with guys like CJ, Hillis and Foster, and his TD numbers would have been better than all of the NFL’s rushers, save maybe for Foster, if not for the Bush-inside-the-10-love-affair.
Hard to argue with the selections of Foster, MJD, and Charles, though. Honestly, I think DMAC was a better, more productive back than anyone in the NFL except for Foster.
Example: Going into the Tuesday night matchup between Minnesota and Philadelphia, DMAC and Adrian Peterson had both played in 13 games on the season. DMAC led in every statistical category except for TDs (12 to 10) and 1st downs. Total rushing yards, rushing yards per game, receiving yards, total scrimmage yards, scrimmage yards per game, yards per carry, 20-, 30-, and 40-plus-yard runs — all of these categories saw DMAC over the NFL’s top fan-vote-getting RB.
Oh well, I hope DMAC makes a statement while I’m watching in person in KC on Sunday!

Clearly we are not ready for the likes of Pitt and Indy.
SF and AZ were early year and this team was gelling (and Campbell was still L-O-S-T). Miami was much more disturbing since it showed our really bad tendency for inconsistency.
To me THATS the biggest potential knock on Cable. He gets the team fired up when we have our back up against the wall (SD1 SD2) or when we are completely dissed by the media. When its tight or we are supposed to win? Not nearly as good. In his defense we are a VERY young team so hopefully they get it now…finally…2011 offers no excuses though that’s for sure

Vegas, I’d give Campbell credit for a lil more than that. I’m not a JC “guy” who is going to support his “guy” no matter what. As a matter of fact I supported Cable’s move to Grads early in the season. Thought he brought more fire and the offense seemed to move at a brisker, fluid pace with Grads at the helm.
The thing is, Alex and a lot of JC’s critics say after six years he is who he is. He isn’t going to get any better. I don’t nesc. buy that, because IMO he’s improved quite a bit as the season wore on.
Remember how he started out. In the preseason he about got decapitated vs SF. Got to ride on a rickety golf cart. Season opening disaster w/ Veldheer at C, and Mario late off snap he got levelled again.
I thought the guy looked shell shocked, like WTF did I get myself into?. Deer in the headlights look. I thought he looked tentative, slow to make his reads and even slower to deliver the ball. Hesitant. Long, looping delivery. Like I said, after six quarters I was ready for Grads too.
But after Grads went down, and JC came back in, down the stretch..he has been much improved. Much more confident. Especially the last four or five games when the team was still in playoff contention. Improved pocket presence. Cut down on fumbles and even kept drives alive with his legs.
I remember logging in after the Jax loss and the guy was getting killed on here for not being a winner and leading GWD with 1:30 left. The dude was 21-30 for 322 yds 2 td’s and no picks. HE played well enough to win. Defense and costly fumble lost that one.
Bottom line, Another offseason together with Hue and these young WR’s and who knows? I think the guy could improve the passing game even more. Improved timing and familiarity with the wideouts. Will he ever be an elite QB like Manning or Brady? NO, but I think he can get better and the Raider offense take another step forward and grow together. Continuity is key.

Sorry ’bout the long, rambling post people. Probably should broke that up a lil.
I think a lil continuity would serve both JC and the Raiders well.
Remember Manning threw a fit when his coordinator was going to retire after spending like 10 years together?
Confidence, familiarity and comfort between coaches and players IS important.
Both JC and the Raiders have suffered for lack of it, IMO.
Don’t want to see the coaching carousel fired up and spinning out of control again. I would like JC get a chance to show what he could do with another year in same system.

8-8 was my prediction coming into this year. A non losing year would be good.
But, there seems to be drama, looming in the offing.
December 28th, 2010 at 7:26 pm
Hwnrdr,
Exactly. I think sometimes we forget how young this team really is. Especially in some key spots. Rookie LT protecting QB’s blindside. Rookie MLB making def. calls. Rookie DE. Branch, Shaughnessy, MM34 all young key contributors on D.
As I’ve said before, the entire WR corps still very Young and raw. Rookies and 2 yr players.
I think that is more of a cause of the uneven play throughout the season. The ups and downs. Moreso than Cable not having them ready to go. I think he has this teams ear. They like him and play hard for him. They just make too many mistakes. Hopefully they get corrected.
Don’t get me wrong, Cable makes his fair share of mistakes, too. Some real head scratchers. But he is still learning on the job too. Head coach of the Oakland Raiders isn’t the easiest job in the world (or league). I think Big Tom is doing OK. Like everybody else..there is room for improvement.

1st of all Torry Holt is Sooooooooo painful to listen to. Soooooooooooo painful! He makes me want to mute the television.
2nd) How the hell did Seymour make the probowl? oh yeah it’s all about name recognition. He probaly had a all his friends vote for him so he can get a better contract this year. pathetic, I like Seynour but he’s not a pro bowler. Kelly was better.
3rd) Ford and SeaBass should be on roster
4th) it sucks Mcfadden didn’t make it, but I understand it is tough with some of the backs in the AFC.
December 28th, 2010 at 7:47 pm
Good post Buckeye.A couple of years ago everyone was complaining because we were changing coaches every year.We have finally had some continuity and gotten better each of the last couple of years but didn’t make the play-offs this year-which most knew probably wouldn’t happen this year-so now they all want to fire the HC.How short some of their memories are.If we don’t make the play-offs next year,or at least have a winning record(10-6 or 11-5),then a change should be made, but not yet.Cable has earned another year.
December 28th, 2010 at 7:48 pm
How ya doin Kell?
I hope not, man. This team does not need any drama. Wan’t it nice to go through a whole season with no Raider bashing and talk of “dysfuntional organization”?
No entire segments of “c’mon man” dedicated entirely to the Raiders.
Let’s leave the offseason drama to Denver and SF. The Raiders have improved into a competitive team who appear to be knocking on the door of the playoffs. We should be looking forward to another solid offseason and draft to improve this team and get it over the hump. Labor situation, notwithstanding.
To blow it all up, and start over would be disasterous, IMO.
Hopefully, Mr Davis feels the same way.
Just have patience,Baby!
December 28th, 2010 at 7:56 pm
The fans don’t need patience. They’re in control. They can stop purchasing tickets any time they want to. Al Davis is the one who needs to get a Super Bowl team onto that field, if he wants to keep his season ticket holders. So instead of telling the fans to be patient, I’d tell Al Davis he’d better get on the ball. 8-8 is better than 5-11. But it’s not a goal by any means for a respectable franchise.
December 28th, 2010 at 7:58 pm
Did cable miss a FG in AZ,did cable not make a play at the QB position in the SF game, did cable drop a 4thqtr pass vs. The texans, did cable draw up the defense against Miami look there’s alot to point out. But the main thing I see is cable has gotten this team competitive in the division an that’s where u start to build u match up with ur division
cable has done that well. So yes for continuity cable MUST return as well as the entire coaching staff, save for maybe Marshall but in his defense he’s playing ALs system well with the players given him. Next yr is our yr guys

It might be one thing if Al says this team is close, but I just don’t think Cable can get them there. Maybe if he could bring in Harbaugh, with his Raider asst. ties. But I just don’t see it. Harbaugh is too hot of a commodity and will command more $ than Al will pay a HC. I don’t think it will happen.
All the talk of Cowher and Gruden II is just sillines and wishful thinking, IMO. Not gonna happen, either.
The most likely scenario is something like Jim Fassel or Kevin Gilbride. Not that much of an improvement, IMO. Probably a set back.
The other scenario is a young up and coming asst. Could get lucky and find another Gruden. Or it could be another Lance. Kinda like playing Russian roullette.
I think they should give Big Tom and his staff at least one more year to see if they can build off this season.
Stability, Continuity. Growth. They took some baby steps this season. Next year, let’s see if they’re off and running.

RMR,
If that was directed at me, then you misunderstood my post. I wasn’t telling Raider fans to be patient. They are starved for a winner.
My comment WAS directed at Mr. Davis, theoretically. I said, Hopefully Mr. Davis feels the same way. Just have patience, Baby!
I’ve said before, that Davis’ lack of patience with his coaches is the biggest reason for the seven year tailspin.
If the avg tenure of a Raiders coach since Flores is 20 games…well no players can flourish in that much turmoil and constant turnover. The HC is neutered of all authority.
That is on Al. it’s one reason I think Cable should be retained. He’s not a strategist or tactition. But, he seems to have the players attention and respect. They are competitive and seem to be improving. At least moving in the right direction.
Let’s see if they can take the next step.

Tom Cable has to remain the coach. I don’t think he’s a very good coach, however, he’s the only coach that can succeed here in Oakland.
If the Head Coach can’t pick his assistants, it makes no sense to replace Cable.
Same with the Quaterback. You are NOT going to find a better QB in free agency than a Jason Campbell with a year under his belt.

For the sake of consistency, Cable should stay. I personally don’t think he is the 10 year franchise coach, at least he has not proven it yet, but he has done enough to buy himself 2 more years in my opinion. Plus the players seem to have bought into his system and also seem tired of all the coaching changes as of late.
I do believe there has been improvement this year. I’ve been expecting 8-8 all season, but I do think 7-9 would be a bit of a disappointment. Regardless, improvement has been made. We are scoring points, we have something that actually resembles a decent offense right now, add a true #1 WR and we are good. Our D could use some adjusting, but it has shown flashes of being good. More often than not.
I say concentrate on the positions that need improvement this off season, resign Bush, Seymour, Miller, Gallery, and whoever else holds their own, keep the coaches, and give this team one more year.
Let’s beat the chiefs on sunday, who will be looking passed this week into the playoffs. GO RAIDERS!
December 28th, 2010 at 10:11 pm
I’m pretty sure there are FA QBs better than Campbell, who is 19th in the NFL in QB rating, despite having a top-5 easy schedule.
December 28th, 2010 at 10:13 pm
SnB,
good points regarding the HC. Hue Jackson will be kept at all costs. He’ll either become the HC, or Cable will be kept to ensure the coaches stay together.
Please remember, all, that Cable or any other Raider HC doesn’t exactly do much.
Gruden couldn’t cut down on the penalties. What exactly would a new unproven coach bring to the table?
December 28th, 2010 at 10:44 pm
Evening Gentlemen, Been a long road but I’m back.
My simple points:
Cable will get better as time goes by.
So will Hue.
Constincency is good.
Als’ impatience with coaches and his desire for FAs’ with big names has gotten us nowhere over the last seven years.
Since JC doesn’t go deep (poor o-line, too quick to check down, stares too much, and for whatever other reason), would it be possible to implement a bit of WC offense to quicken his release? (not really a WC fan, but what the heck). Not that we have good enough recievers to cut across the field, but just a thought. Gannon was WC to some degree but was able to strike it now and again. I mean, every pass by JC last Sunday was short but one I believe. Plus, he’s got big enough playmakers in the backfield. Who knows.
We’ve got a foundation here, just can’t wrap my mind around how firm it is.
Als’ gotta bend here a bit. He has got to be pleased we’ve come out of the dumps, broke the double digit loss streak.
And on a parting note, what the heck happened after the SB loss to Tampa that drove us into the ground. Teams suffer a bit (Buffalo hung in there), but my gosh, 7 years of strange stuff. We coulda come back in a year of two, but 7 years? We are close now, and tho we have a much, much tougher schedule next year, our players and rookies and coaches will get better, and I feel we can meet the challange. We’ll be questionable at QB, but see how hard JC works in the off-season.
And I hope Al inks everyone ASAP so they can get right to work. No time off. No vacation (well maybe a day or to break, but that its). Get to work NOW for the 2011 season.
December 28th, 2010 at 10:45 pm
QB possibilities next year:
Campbell – 12 Tds 8 Tds 2,232 yds 30 sacks
Palmer – 25 Tds 18 Ints 3,665 yds 26 sacks in 150 more throws
Seneca Wallace – Lifetime 29 Tds 16 Int (wow!), higher QB rating than JC (both this year and lifetime)
D. Stanton – Same Comp. % as JC 4 Tds 3 Ints only 6 sacks in one-third of Campbell’s attempts.
December 28th, 2010 at 10:49 pm
Another note:
I like Kolb from the Eagles. He could develope into a fine QB under the right conditions. Doubt he’ll leave Philly, but who knows. Chance he might go to Seattle. Hawks are messed up right now.
Palmer: No
McNabb: No
Singletary: No

Kolb is 6′3″, what 26 or 27, still unbeat up enough to have some drive.
December 28th, 2010 at 10:57 pm
DaRayduh,
Easy option is we lost GM Bruce Allen and no one could replace the majority of our Super Bowl roster that was 30-38 year old veterans.
Hard to replace Gannon, Brown, Rice, Rod Woodson, Kennedy, Parrella, Romo, and Armstrong when Al is drafting…
Derrick Gibson, Brayton, Teyo Johnson, F. Washington, and Andrew Walter.
Can’t reload without a good QB.
December 28th, 2010 at 10:59 pm
I’m wondering though, if Kolb struggled this year in Philly, what exactly does he need to succeed?
Pro Bowl RB, WRs, and excellent coaching staff…
and he struggled. Risky.
December 28th, 2010 at 11:01 pm
Wallace is 5′11
yet he’s thrown more TDs than INTs every year, including a solid 11 TDs 3 INT the one year he started in Seattle (2008)
http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/players/6446/career;_ylt=Av6.jJdlTUwTQ2KBdQER7zj.uLYF
There’s his link. Surprisingly, he’s never had a bad year.
Might make good competition and easy to bring in.
December 28th, 2010 at 11:03 pm
wonder what scouts/fans have seen in him.
#s show a high completion %, few turnovers, kinda JC-like. Hope he takes more shots down the field than JC.
What he has going for him is he isn’t a known quantity like JC, being he hasn’t started more than 20-something games. Kinda Gannon-ish in that regard.
December 28th, 2010 at 11:05 pm
You can’t take Palmers numbers in Cincy and transfer them here.
You can’t take Tom Brady’s number’s in New England and transfer them here.
You can’t take Kolb’s in number’s Philly and transfer them here.
This is not Fantasy Football.
December 28th, 2010 at 11:08 pm
Wallace is fiesty. Don’t know how well he could scramble anymore. And 5′11″ won’t help him. But a good back up no doubt.
I fell Palmer is just to hammered. I will give JC hte benefit if Al inks everyone ASAP and we will know about Campbell after the first game next season. If I can guess Al correctly, Campbell is here to stay. He’s gotta make a Plunkett out of him if it’s the last thing he does.
December 28th, 2010 at 11:09 pm
You can’t just plug in somebody else’s numbers from a different system and transfer them to the Raiders from your play-station.
This is not Fantasy Football.
December 28th, 2010 at 11:12 pm
KK, about the only take charge qb I could see making it in Oakland would be Payton Manning. But if JC has the same support team he’s had this year, I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt til the first game of the season in ‘11. We’ll know then how him and Hue spent their off season.
December 28th, 2010 at 11:13 pm
I’m pretty sure good QBs put up good #s and give us a glimpse into the talent-level of a QB.
If you really think otherwise, ok.
December 28th, 2010 at 11:15 pm
Wouldn’t you think Campbell would have progressed by now?
Not sure why 2 months in shorts will make a bigger difference than 15 games.
Especially when he’s a 29-year old veteran.
Basically, his flaws are career-long. Lack of pocket-presence. No leadership. Dumps off without giving deeper routes much time, even when he has time. Struggles against pressure Ds. Doesn’t read the field.
Those were his problems in Washington, and he brought them here. Not sure one off-season suddenly cures that.
December 28th, 2010 at 11:18 pm
He did well vs the Chargers, Broncos, Jaguars.
Horrible vs Titans, Rams, , 49ers, Steelers, Chiefs (until OT, and Colts.
Its hard to give him the benefit of the doubt when that’s been his history for 6 years now. Panics.
December 28th, 2010 at 11:20 pm
Cable will get better.
So will Hue.
JC, we’ll know after the first game.
Cable and Hue and Marshall will spend a lot of time together drinking beer and eating pizza and burn a lot of midnight oil in an attempt to make this team better. And they’ll have to do it in the late hours and early morning hours because Al will be sleeping, so they won’t have him breathing down their backs. Cable can present to Al a concept and plan for the 2011 season and Al will like it because he’ll know they’ve spent a lot of time doing their homework.
Just don’t see it any other way. JC is here to stay. So is Al.
December 28th, 2010 at 11:20 pm
Denver and Jax had league-bottom pass defenses, so just not that much to get excited about.
December 28th, 2010 at 11:21 pm
It would be great to see what Al has thought of JC’s season so far, especially given how little he uses that big arm of his.
December 28th, 2010 at 11:23 pm
To echo KoolKell’s comments, numbers just don’t automatically translate.
Carson Palmer has played on the same team and same system for 7 or so years and is still not very good at it.
Seneca Wallace….”C’Mon Man!”
Drew Stanton & Kevin Kolb? The Raiders are not the place for players needing a ton of development.
JC is the best for now. If he can improve on where he is now…gain some more chemistry with his receivers…I’ll “Roll the Dice” with JC again…then roll the dice with sketchy QBs on the street

Why are most people saying that the fact that the players loooove Cable that we have to keep him? Is it that they love Cable cuz he’s got them on the right path to the playoffs OR is it because Cable makes it okay to lose? That he doesn’t get “down on the guys when we come up short”? That “he understands how it is and doesn’t get upset with the players when they come in unprepared or when they’re inconsistent and lose to the dregs of the league.
I like Cable as a guy. He’s easy to like with his happy go lucky locker room talk and his general warm fuzziness, but is he the guy to get this team to the next level?
Cable told everybody THIS TEAM THIS YEAR was a playoff team. You guys are forgetting that even guys like Adam Schefter had us at 9-7 this year. Cable said playoffs, but at the end of the day WE ARE STILL 3RD PLACE IN THE AFC WEST and poised to finish the season at 2-5. It’s a weak finish period. To me 3rd place and finishing 2-5 is the most damning thing against him.
I think with this weak finish we are getting worse NOT better.

The thing with Cable is consistency. That’s all. Als’ impatience with coaches has gotten us 7 years of garbage. I am excited for next year if things stay in tact. If it doesn’t work, put it all out to the trash, because that is where it will remain for some time.
But we got a bit of a foundation here, would like to see where it goes next year.

If the Raiders lose, does Jackson, win? Interesting.
December 28th, 2010 at 11:41 pm
Here’s how it reads:
(AP) Raiders fire Tom Cable
A press conference is scheduled by Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis at 5pm today to announce the firing of head coach Tom Cable.
Cable led the Raiders to their best start since 2002 even holding a first place tie with the Kansas City Chiefs for one week as late as week 9. Cable ends his stint as Raiders coach with a record of 16-28 with his most impressive victories being a sweep against the San Diego Chargers and an overall 5-1 record against rival foes in the AFC West, but failures against presumably much weaker teams such as Arizona and San Francisco ultimately proved more telling for Cable’s future with the Raiders.
Also working against Cable was despite performing much better during a three game win streak earlier in the season the Raiders faltered when it mattered most and losing the positive momentum gained by dropping five of their last seven games.
Owner Al Davis cited the poor finish and loss of positve momentum as one of the key factors in his decision to fire Cable. “The search will begin immediately for the next head coach who will lead the Raiders back into the playoffs”, and beyond”.
-Melissa Shuster (AP).

December 28th, 2010 at 11:43 pm
Pretty damn good.
December 28th, 2010 at 11:47 pm
Well, lets just trash KC next Sunday and roll into the off-seson on a good note, and Al inks his staff right away so they can get to work.
But Davis needs to bring Cable, Hue and Marshall into his dungeon and tell them what a good job they did, with the improvements and all, then rip them a new one, read them the riot act, let them see fire coming out of his nostrils, tell them where the fire and brimstone really lies, that he means business or he’ll roast them, then end his tirade with another positive like, come and see me any time, my gates are always open, and then let them get to work.
I got faith in Cable and Hue and Marshall. They were so close they could taste it. So could Al. They’ll make the necessary adjustments and we’ll be fine for next season. And we’ll know after the first game.
JC is here to stay. At least for next year.

——————————-
Patience is for losers. We need Jon Gruden back NOW! If the 49ers get Gruden, count 2 tickets off the season ticket holder list.

December 29th, 2010 at 12:17 am
I’d love to hear that Gruden has booked a flight to Alameda presumably to meet with Raider owner Al Davis about the Raider head coaching job and the announcement that he’s the next head coach the next day.
Whatever Al decides to do, I pray he does it right after the KC game, or as soon as possible. Either way.

Gruden, will know how to use all this speed, and mix in a few very good vet’s. If Chuck came back we WILL be BURST into the 2011 Playoffs, and kick azz. 13-3, 14-2
With Cable we should still make the playoffs, but prolly need help in the end, like 9-7,10-6
Gruden should keep cable as O-line coach/ast head coach.
Keep Hue, if not McDannl.
December 29th, 2010 at 12:26 am

That may have been the worst QB’d game I ever seen in my life last night from Mike Vick.
He could have had 5 or 6 turnovers, and was lucky to have only three.
In Vick’s last 5 games he has 10 TD’s to 7 picks, 3 rushing TD’s to 11 fumbles with 4 lost.
13 TD’s to 11 turnovers and people want him to have MVP talk? He is falling apart at the end of the season.
December 29th, 2010 at 5:23 am
And if you want to go one game furthur for him, the first NYG game, than he has another two fumbles, one lost, a rushing TD and no picks or passing TD’s.
14 TD’s to 12 turnovers since the Redskins MNF debacle.
Think about that. Over 6 games (almost half the season and half of his games played) and he is barely averaging a better than 1-1 TD:turnover ratio.
I said it weeks ago, he should have got his new contract a few months ago. After he sits out next week hurt, than loses in the first round of the playoffs, his market value will decrease dramatically.

Instead, both games mean basically nothing.

My sports world is crashing around me. The Raiders are on the verge of making another mistake in keeping Tom Cable insuring another season or two of inconsistent, mediocre play; the Cubs have done jack squat this offseason; ND isn’t looking promising for 2011; the LA Kings are good, but who cares?
And then there are the Lakers….Kobe has finally taken that step backwards and will soon become Allen Iverson part II.
My only hope? The Raiders let Cable go and convince Harbaugh to take the helm and the Lakers trade Kobe to Denver for Melo and Billups (and we could watch the Colorado fans embarrass themselves by slobbering all over Kobe after all these years of them booing him lol).

Many fans want to switch to a 3-4 Defense and Tomsula is an excellent young coach
He was DC for the Berlin Thunder in 2004 & 2005.
Head Coach for the Rhein Fire in 2006.
4 years as DL coach for SF he’s produced some pretty stout run defenses and turned Aubrayo Franklin into a Pro Bowl calibur NT
better candidate than John Fox imo!

we could have drafted Terrence Cody and signed Jamal Williams, Maake Kemoeatu & Howard Green in free agency.
all those guys can play 3-4 NT. We’ll have the same opportunity this offseason. Have to wait & see what happens. I have a feeling we will spend 2nd & 3rd rounders on a WR and CB (unless we trade for Kevin Kolb)
December 29th, 2010 at 7:55 am
As for the Rooney Rule…since they were interviewing for a GM, and Softli came in to interview, does that satisfy that rule or will they have to do it for each position?
December 29th, 2010 at 7:59 am
I’m pretty sure Al Davis will see that both DT’s Seymour & Kelly made the Pro Bowl and both will return next season … obvious to me that we had “STUFF THE RUN” on the mind when we drafted McClain & Houston.
doubtful we will take a nose tackle in the 1st 3 rounds this year imo. Fat Albert may be released, but we already know how he feels about 3-4 defenses!
I bet Marshall & Haluchek will be fired and somebody will be brought in with more intensity to light a fire under Rolando’s butt

the Raiders don’t have a therapist on staff do they?
not aware of an anger management program either.
we would need BOTH for Tom & Mike to coexist – we almost thought Hue Jackson was going to get a broken jaw a few weeks ago, remember?
apparently they both laughed about it. Hmmm
December 29th, 2010 at 8:28 am
I would love for Singletary be LB coach here. It’s already been mentioned that he will not get any coordinator or HC job. He can turn McClain into a beast!
December 29th, 2010 at 8:31 am
LOL, well “young amarican” thought that was the deal too, and I tried to tell him, but he didnt get it, lets hope he now is wiser than the raiders players..
———–
Huh? I never said the Raiders would get into the playoffs if they swept the division. I don’t even think I ever discussed it with you. They weren’t getting into the playoffs without the Chiefs and Chargers losing, and even then they would have had to win their last three games. You must be confusing me with someone else.

Interesting. Breaston would make a good veteran addition to the WR corps. Fast guy with good hands, and can return punts as well…

contract expires or will be handed walking papers:
Gradkowski, O’Sullivan, Bennett, Higgins, N Miller, M Henderson, Walker, Bryant, Moss, R Brown, Davis, Howard, Huff, Johnson
thoughts?
December 29th, 2010 at 8:44 am
McClain is a Beast!!!!
Trade RR for a poster who can see/ appreciate real talent like McPain, and is not happy with avg talent that had no real production like JLH.
December 29th, 2010 at 8:45 am
Bryant will only go if they draft another DT who performs well in training camp.
Johnson will probably go if the Raiders draft another CB, or if Ware and McFadden show improvement in training camp.
I’ve mentioned before why I think Huff should stay, but I think it’s conceivable that he’ll get an offer somewhere else.
The rest I agree with.
December 29th, 2010 at 8:46 am
I like to see cable trying to slap Singletary. Those crazy eyes!
December 29th, 2010 at 8:47 am

OG Gallery, Carlisle, Loper, BCamp
C Satele
DE ShoNasty, Scott, Houston
DT Seymour, Kelly, Henderson
OLB Wimbley, Groves, Williams
MLB McClain, Goethel
CB Asomugha, Routt, McFadden, Ware
S Mitchell, Branch, S Brown, Eugene
ST Janikowski, Lechler, Condo
December 29th, 2010 at 8:49 am
I think Huff is playing for a new contract. He doesn’t play this hard, and he didn’t do much till last year.
I will only resign him, if he gives us a discount.
December 29th, 2010 at 8:49 am
I definitely hope Loper comes back. Dude played pretty well in Gallery’s place, so he’s a good guy to keep around for depth.
I think Gallery will be re-signed for sure. He’s had a big role in Veldheer’s development.
December 29th, 2010 at 8:51 am
No Huff?!?!
December 29th, 2010 at 8:51 am
Yeah, it’s always difficult to tell with contract-year players.
Yet another reason I’m not sold on Routt. He had his best season this season, but whenever he gets burned it seems to be on key downs, or in the red zone.
December 29th, 2010 at 8:52 am
If we bring Cooper back, one of us should go slap Cable!!
December 29th, 2010 at 8:56 am
Routt is garbage!
We drafted him and Washington due to their speed. Washington is an avg CB, and Routt is below avg- avg at best.
Great 1st and 2nd RD picks!
We need a CB to be able to play better man, which can help us stop the run by having 8-9 players in the box.
Sign J Joseph!!!
December 29th, 2010 at 8:57 am
Unless Wisniewski somehow falls to the Raiders in the second round, Satele should absolutely stay.
I think the focus should be on upgrading the RG and RT positions.
FA:
RGs Harvey Dahl, Carl Nicks
RTs Ryan Harris, Jared Gaither, Tyson Clabo
Darrius Morris (Temple) or Marcus Cannon (TCU) are both decent G/T prospects in the draft.
December 29th, 2010 at 8:58 am
Jonathan Joseph at CB across from Nnamdi would be spectacular. It would finally give the Raiders a CB tandem that can turn opposing offenses one-dimensional, and let the defense focus on stopping the run.
December 29th, 2010 at 8:59 am
I still don’t understand why we traded Washington for a 4th RD pick. He wasn’t making a lit of money, and we didn’t get a lot for him.
Is it true that GB offered A Rodgers for Moss?
December 29th, 2010 at 8:59 am
In the draft, I like Brandon Burton (Utah), Curtis Brown (Texas), and Davon House (New Mexico State).
December 29th, 2010 at 9:02 am
A guy to keep an eye on if Bush isn’t re-signed is Derrick Locke from Kentucky. He has the kind of speed that makes Big Al drool (more than he normally does…).
December 29th, 2010 at 9:04 am
We need:
1- CB
2- C
3- G/T
4- OLB
I like us to add:
1- Vet WR
2- DT/ DE
3- Blocking FB
4- QB
December 29th, 2010 at 9:06 am
I like Brandon Harris, but I don’t think he will be available in the 2nd. I don’t like the 2 kids from Texas.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:11 am
If there are good CBs available next FA like J Joseph, I would like to sign one, and use our 2nd RD pick on OL or WLB.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:15 am
I would sign AJ Hawk from GB, if they let him go due to salary issues. He can be a great WLB. We need a WLB that can help us against the run, and he can stay on the field with McPain in passing situations (nickel).
MM is a S!! Not a LB?!?!
December 29th, 2010 at 9:15 am
Is it true that GB offered A Rodgers for Moss?
**************
To my knowledge GB (mostly Favre)was interested in Moss, when Al asked for Rodgers GB soured on the deal. Favre was pissed, and it was one of the factors in him leaving the next year.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:17 am
Stupid Marshall is playing MM as a LB, asking the S to shed blocks from TEs and OL?!?!
Great Idea Marshall!!!
December 29th, 2010 at 9:17 am
If the Raiders are going to draft a WLB, I think Greg Jones would be a tremendous pick.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:19 am
Word is CB Jonathan Joseph might get franchised by the Bengals, but Mike Brown might be too cheap to franchise him, given Revis and Nnamdi’s salaries.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:19 am
Thx bro. That makes more sense than them offering Rodgers and Al passing on it in favor of a 4th RD pick from the rats.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:22 am
No Way. Brown is too cheap. He will extend a contract, but he will not pay top salary.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:25 am
Re-sign Seymour, Miller, Gallery, Satele, John Henderson, Barnes, and either Bush or Huff.
Sign CB Jonathan Joseph, RG Harvey Dahl or Carl Nicks, RT Ryan Harris, and a veteran WR (Vincent Jackson, James Jones, Steve Breaston). If Huff walks, sign FS Jarrad Page.
Draft OLB Greg Jones, QB Pat Devlin or Nathan Enderle, RB Derrick Locke (if Bush walks), DT/NT Ian Williams.

Excellent post.
Very professional researching and summation as well.

We need to trim the fat in terms if salaries to make it work.
Cooper has to go!
Brown Routt, CJ, and Eugene have to go too.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:34 am
please stop throwing around big names in free agency or in Round 1 of the draft …
the Raiders will go low key, yet again.
the only guys we’ll overpay are our own imo
that happens to be Seymour, Gallery, Bush, Routt & Wimbley (to name a few)

I would like to, but I’m not sure the Raiders will have a shot at any of the top Cs in the draft.
The second-tier guys are O’Dowd (who has a pretty nasty injury history) and Linnenkohl (who at this point might be a lateral move from Satele).
All the more reason to upgrade RG and RT, in my opinion.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:39 am
WOW!
Seymour ahead of Kelly and no DMC?
Shows how out of whack the whole Pro Bowl selection process really is.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:39 am
Mankins made the Pro Bowl when he didn’t even play half the season?
December 29th, 2010 at 9:40 am
I don’t think guys like Dahl, Harris, or James Jones are exactly household names. Nor Joseph, for that matter.
Jackson I only throw out as a possibility because he might want a long-term deal, and other teams (including the Chargers) could shy away from him given the DUI history.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:40 am
We should resign Seymour, Miller, Wimbley, and Gallery if he gives us a discount. We should try to upgrade other positions instead of over paying guys like Routt. I rather resign your boy Huff over Routt.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:42 am
I wouldn’t mind seeing Eugene stay, but he’d have to do it on the cheap. He’s a key special teams contributor. Not sure what kind of offers he’d get in FA, though.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:42 am
Is Wimbley’s deal up after this season? I haven’t seen his name among the Raiders’ impending free agents.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:43 am
Nnamdi makes the Pro bowl with 19 tackles zero picks or sacks?
Wow…
http://www.raidernationstation.com/raider_war_room_3
December 29th, 2010 at 9:43 am
Yeah, just checked. Wimbley would need to be re-signed, too. Scary crop of FAs coming up for the Raiders, that’s for sure.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:45 am
Raiders should sign Mankins ahead of Gallery and release JLH and Chaz and sign V Jackson!
Resign Huff. Give Seymour the tag again. Put Mankins at RG and Loper at LG.
Now that would be serious moves!
December 29th, 2010 at 9:46 am
I agree that signing Seymour long term probably not a good idea but want him here next year. We’ll need someone to replace him and can use that year to train him up
December 29th, 2010 at 9:46 am
Huff should definitelt be resigned without a doubt.
Otherwise, there will be huge void in center field and neither Mitchell, Branch or S Brown is ready to take over that center field position yet.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:47 am
282. Davis always keeps who he wants
December 29th, 2010 at 9:47 am
Marc Mariani really? 1 PR TD 1 KR TD vs 3 KR TD with a long of 101 yds. no love for Ford i like him hes been a bright spot for sure.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:47 am
Seymour
Miller (franchise tag, if it’s back with the new CBA?)
Gallery
Wimbley
Bush
Satele
Huff
Barnes
J. Henderson
I think all these guys at least merit consideration for being brought back into the fold. Barnes and John Henderson could potentially be replaced in the later rounds of the draft. Bush is a good player, but might want a crack at a starting job somewhere. Huff might get a good offer somewhere else and walk.
What I’m afraid of is Routt getting a massive long-term deal…
December 29th, 2010 at 9:48 am
Nnamdi is one of the two best CB’s in the whole damn league….of course he is going to make it.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:50 am
Seymour will be back one way or another. No way Al gives up a 1st rounder for a two-year rental.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:51 am

They need a huge upgrade at RT and they need someone with who can pull but has more power than Carlisle at RG.

He also brings valuable leadership to that locker room along with the D-Line and whole defense.

Sadly, aside from Jonathan Joseph, the best chance to upgrade from Routt would be with the second round pick.

Don’t worry, those guys will have a shot to be added on as replacements, due to the Pats and Ravens going deep into the playoffs most likely.
December 29th, 2010 at 9:59 am
The good thing about right now and due to our stronger showing this year, is that there are some tough decisions for Al to make regarding the HC job.
Harbaugh could be got and could be interested, Gruden could be got and could be interested, and Hue Jackson is a possible loss to Cincinnati meaning he’s in demand and could be interested in Oakland too. At least Al has those options alongside the thought of retaining Cable.
If we lose Jackson, there’s no use holding onto Cable if we could entice Harbaugh/Gruden. There may be a chance that Jackson decides to remain OC instead of take a HC job elsewhere, if he loves it here and is excited about his offensive weapons here and learning more about coaching before venturing elsewhere as a HC.

To be honest, neither am I. I think Joseph should be the top target for the Raiders in free agency because of that. But it’s a pretty steep drop off talent-wise after Joseph in free agency.
I don’t see the Raiders doing any better at DT than the ones they have, so I don’t think that should be the second-round pick. If anything, the Raiders should look for a young guy who can play the NT position on a rotational basis (since the Raiders defensive scheme doesn’t use an NT) in the later rounds, much like they use Henderson now.
As I mentioned before, there isn’t much there for the Raiders at the C position. It’ll be easier for them to upgrade the RG and RT positions and keep Satele, unless they trade up for Wisniewski.
If Baldwin, Blackmon or Floyd are somehow available in the second round, one of those guys should be the pick.
