Campbell: Issue was between Davis-Cable
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, January 5th, 2011 at 10:38 am in Oakland Raiders.
NOTE: Both ESPN and CSN-Bay Area have reported Hue Jackson is interviewing with the 49ers today, which means he was not immediately rubber-stamped as the Raiders head coach. My understanding is that Jackson, however, expects to be talking with Raiders owner Al Davis very soon.
In contrast to some teammates who are upset over the decision to change coaches, Jason Campbell sounded cool and detached Wednesday morning when analyzing the demise of Tom Cable.
Campbell, a guest on SiriusXM’s “Mad Dog Radio,” said he learned late last night via text messages from teammates that Cable had not been renewed.
“I think it probably came down to the relationship between Mr. Davis and coach Cable, and their view on things and how they saw things,” Campbell said. “I didn’t really get a chance to see that, because I was always in offensive meetings and I got there late in the offseason so I really didn’t get a chance to be around coach Cable a whole lot one-on-one and be around Mr. Davis one-on-one.
“Most of my focus was on the field and being around the young guys. The decision was made and I’m pretty sure it just came down to Mr. Davis and coach Cable and they probably sat down and talked about it, and that’s where they went.”
Considering Cable was on a Sirius show a short time before the announcement and was hopeful of keeping his job, the conversation couldn’t have amounted to much other than a “Thanks, but no thanks” message either to Cable or his agent.
During that show, Cable spoke of Campbell’s development over the course of the season and in his final press briefing suggested benching him for Bruce Gradkowski actually helped in terms of his play. Yet at the same time, Cable made it clear Campbell wasn’t a quarterback who could carry a game on his shoulders without the kind of support he received when the Raiders were running well.
“The quarterback position here is solid,” Cable said. “You’ve got to be wise enough to understand what it takes for them to succeed. To me, it’s a run game. We’re going to throw the ball vertical here. Our play-action game allows us to do that.
“So we need a good manager at quarterback. No question Jason proved in the last six weeks of the season that he has command of what we’re asking him to do, and he’s able to control it and lead this team. As long as you do the things around him, meaning run the football, run the football, run the football, and let him explode with deep passes, we have a chance because we certainly have some talent at the receivers position.”
When Campbell was benched for the first time at halftime of a Week 2 win over St. Louis, Jackson said the switch was made at his recommendation. Following the season-ending win in Kansas City, however, he spoke his developing relationship with Jackson as a coordinator.
“Most definitely we have a better feel for each other,” Campbell said. “You don’t just come in out o the middle of nowhere and somehow light it up. It takes time to get to know each other, to know my strengths and what I can do well and what I need to work on.”
During his last press session with beat writers heading into the Chiefs game, Jackson said he was impressed with Campbell’s development as a quarterback who can do more than drop back and deliver.
“I think Jason is a young man who can stand in the pocket and throw it and obviously has the ability to move around and throw the ball,” Jackson said. “I am surprised by his mobility to make plays outside the pocket. He’s done it, but not to the extent that he’s doing it now. He’s really done a good job. He really has. I think Jason has really grown into this role for our football team. Im very excited about his future and what he can be in 2011.”

Dakota,
If I wasnt following the Raiders of the past 7 years, I’d think you’re right. However, you tend to forget where we have been for the past 7 years. I for one believe that the QB plays a very important position on the team. I dont believe we have a legit “starting” QB in Oakland. We’ve come from being the laughing stock of the league and you actually used to say that last year. To being a very competitive team that finally made it to mediocrity without a legit starting QB and a very young roster from the past 2 years.
I dug up the Cowboys under Jimmy Johnson. 1989 1-15, 90 7-9, 91 11-5. TC is not JJ. However, JJ had Troy Aikman during those 3 years. TC had Jawalrus for 2 and the Fake Plunkett for the other. I think TC overachieved with our roster.

Pretty close. One has a coach that’s 83 years old and has no idea what he is doing. The other has an owner in the same situation . . . age maybe slightly different.

Aig, I have to agree with you. I posted it here earlier. Cable was hamstrung by a junkie QB, an injury-prone duckball QB, and an inconsistent slow-to-move checkdown QB.

Tom Cable?? Thanks for the hard work…and congratulations on surviving, and reviving, your career. Here’s wishing you the best, and I hope you find a great job in a hurry.
Al Davis’ treatment of Tom Cable?? Al helped Cable stay in football (not just the NFL, but in football), when he nearly lost all hope of doing so. The allegations from within — and without — the Organization were so serious, it would’ve been easy and understandable for Cable to lose his job anywhere else.
It may seem cold to axe Cable now…and I think he could’ve/should’ve stayed at least one more year…but Al gave Tom the room to settle into his work, and gave him the relative security of the thick walls in Alameda when all other walls were tumbling down.
Tom Cable has a future thanks to Al Davis.
And the Raiders are going to be alright when the dust settles again.

January 5th, 2011 at 10:46 am
Keeping Jackson will mean continuity for the team. If Jackson goes it will be the 3rd offensive scheme in three years. Team just learning how to move the ball. Will keep the same D as this year. It looks more like a strategic move Al had to make to keep the team moving in the right direction.

Unless he gets much, much better in the off-season, if Campbell is our unquestioned QB again in 2011 don’t expect any better than 8-8.
Endless indecision and constant checkdowns from teh QB position will keep you from being a legit contender in this league.

McRaider,
You can’t be serious. You’re talking about one of our worst offensive performance this year. Ford on ST took one back for 7. And Ford became superman and bailed out JC twice from sure ints. Failed. Try again.

Why do people want to get ride of Bones Fassell?
Our kicker lead the NFL in points, our punter made the pro bowl, we gave up 1 ST touchdown and we scored 4 plus a safety, and were +2 in the ST turnover department.
Damn good job from Bones!!!

Why was Fassel so bad? We scored 4 TDs on special teams this season plus a safety. Lechler is headed back to the Pro Bowl. Condo continues to be flawless. And Janikowski set a franchise record for points by a kicker.
What’s the problem?
The coverage units have been solid, IMO. We gave up a TD to Arizona and the long runback against the Jags, which stung. But I don’t recall another big return against us all year. I don’t even recall a kick returner getting it past the 50 against us this season other than the two I already noted.

How many games must the new HC win next year to meet expectations?
I say must be at least 10-6.

January 5th, 2011 at 11:03 am
Here’s Tommy Cable’s resume per year as a Raider:
07- O-line coach, immediately upgraded a disasterous O-line that was previously coached by two HOF O-lineman (Shell and Slater) in one offseason. Takes rushing from 29th in the league to 6th, and decreases sacks from 72 down to 41.
08- Fills in admirably and stays a true Oakland Raider soldier in the midst of the grease-fire that was Lane Kiffin. Got the team to fight hard at the end of the year, and got the most out of Jamarcus Russell at the end of the year.
09- Fails to improve record-wise, but is hamstrung by Jamarcus’ immaturity. Still wins a few games towards the end of the year to keep job.
10- Takes team to best record in 7 years, transforms team into a physically dominating team, while seamlessly taking less of a role specifically on offense and focus’ in on team goals. 6-0 division, including mostly beat downs, for first team in over 7 years as well.
Seems pretty solid to me.

Too bad you can’t reason.
Doesn’t seem like Al is getting his money’s worth with you idiot.
The problem peabrain is that whenever the situation approaches stable, Al fires the head coach.
My objection has nothing to do with Cable or Jackson.
Both Cable and Jackson are average coaches and I’m no super supporter of either, just of the Raiders.
We only over get average coaches because Al will never relinquish any power to encourage a superior coach to apply for the job.
Go back and tell that to the guys who sent you on here.
I know that’s hard for you grasp what with you having to chant Al’s mantra all the time and spitting out all those talking points.
That and the number of reasons that you’re a dik-headed moron-but who’s counting.

Once again, don’t confuse the “rather see Campbell than Gradkowski” argument with “Campbell is a great QB”. I have repeatedly said that I don’t see Campbell is a long-term solution.
I just knew what Gradkowski was. I didn’t buy into the emotional win over a Pittsburgh team that was mired in a 5-game losing streak. Some people around here got too carried away by that one game in 2009.

January 5th, 2011 at 11:32 am
I have to confess – I went to bed pretty bummed out on the news of Cable’s departure last night… As some of you know I’ve been sitting in my seats for quite a while and the ‘product’ this year was the best its been in years.
However, after a night’s sleep reflecting on it here are my thoughts:
1) I doubt any team is going to beat down the door for Cable’s services as a head coach… I doubt it now and I doubt it for a long time. He did a great job of managing Al, a good job of bringing the team together (probably rallying against Al), but he isn’t a top echelon head coach. Cable probably ‘topped out’ this year. We’ll never know any better, but some of the errors he made make me think that its as good as it was ever going to get.
2) Cable screwed up putting Gradkowski in the SF and Miami games – no question about it in Al’s eyes. Those losses with Grads at the helm all but sealed his fate, especially after listening to Greg Papa on KNBR (Remember Greg Papa and Al actually talk to one another whereas we *speculate* on what Al thinks / talks about).
3) Gradkowski can probably pack his bags. I know that there are a lot of Grads lovers out there, but I think that Al really likes Campbell, and he isn’t a big fan of 5′8″ guys with mid-strength arms.
4) If I’m Al, I wait to see if anyone actually offers Hue a contract – for all we know he has a head-coach ‘matching’ clause in Hue’ coordinator contract – making sure that the Raiders have the right of first refusal – if no one offers Hue the HC job – we can probably get him on the cheap.
5) The big questions are what are we going to do about the defensive coordinator position? Wide receivers coach? and Oline coach? Those are three very important coaching positions that need to be addressed.
6) I’ll leave y’all with the following: “Winning washes away all of the turmoil” – If the next coach takes the team to the next step (10 wins?) – then we’ll think Al was a genius.
January 5th, 2011 at 11:32 am

I hate to say that not renewing Cable is a mistake.
I wanted Cable fired at the beginning of the season, and said that regardless of the record Cable was a lame duck coach. I wanted HueJax to get a chance to show what he could do. However, Cable turned the team around as well as my opinion, and wanted him back.
The CBA issue might not get resolved on time to give a new coach the time needed to gel with the team. So, if it’s HueJax the target then it makes a lot of sense to have the continuity.
Also, I believe that HueJax will come at a cheaper rate than renewing Cable, always an Al Davis priority, specially given his economic reality in Oaktown. Mr. Davis might get more for his money with HueJax.
Maybe there’s a chance Mr. Davis has the inside connection with Harbaugh, or with another top notch coach available, I wouldn’t hold my breath, though.
I tell you that if Chokey Gruden returned, I would walk to Oaktown Downtown and join the party. So, Mr. Davis I suggest that you get Chokey back, make him GM and give him a part of the team, whatever it takes.

In addition to Ravens coach John Harbaugh, there’s another voice saying that Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh will not be the next head coach at Michigan: Michigan’s athletic director.
Michigan A.D. Dave Brandon, in announcing today that he had fired coach Rich Rodriguez, made clear that he was not firing Rodriguez in the hopes that Jim Harbaugh was coming to town.
“I personally believe Jim Harbaugh is headed to the NFL,” Brandon said. “My personal belief is that Jim Harbaugh is going to end up with a really, really challenging opportunity in the NFL.”
So Harbaugh apparently turned Michigan down not because he’s staying at Stanford, but because he’s heading to the NFL. But which NFL team? We really don’t know right now, but there are indications that Harbaugh would like to stay in the Bay Area, where there are two NFL vacancies.

who thinks cable again screwed up by not having b campbell on the field.
**********************************
Al Davis also patted his own back praising his call for playing Mario Henderson in 2008, after writing the check for failed Kwame Harris in the first place.
I trust Cable that Bruce Campbell is a stiff at this stage.
=======================================================
Then you should hit the bricks along with cable. this is 2011 not 2008. it is clear henderson at this point is a flop.

What’s all the fuss about– He (Cable) was just a head coach.
I just scanned all the other teams newspapers/media, covering all the other potential coaches on the firing line. I read many players, who commented about the coach and his ability to lead and his football knowledge for X and O’s.
I can’t find one Raider player, to comment on his X and O’s since his firing.
If you guys want a HC to motivate the players, the team is in trouble.
If the team wants a spiritual leader, rah, rah type and brutally honest, they should hire Tony Robbins and have a real professional care taker in their midst.

Puleez do not keep Sanjay Lal… Our wide receivers do not come back for the ball and rarely get separation.

We’re told that the Dolphins also have spoken with former Raiders and Bucs coach Jon Gruden.
Per the Herald, Cowher backed away due to the issue of power over the football operations, which suggests that the Dolphins may be willing to dump Sparano but keep G.M. Jeff Ireland. As to Gruden, a league source tells us that talks occurred on Monday and into Tuesday, that Gruden asked for too much money (in the estimation of the Dolphins), and that Gruden stepped away once the Dolphins started to bat lashes at Harbaugh.
We’re also told that Harbaugh wants $7 million per year, and that he is putting out the word that he was offered $5 million annually from Michigan (John Clayton says it was $5.2 million) in the hopes of leveraging even more from an NFL team.

The 49ers are scheduled to meet with Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh at an “undisclosed location” on Wednesday.
Harbaugh won’t be at the team’s facility — probably to avoid a massive media gathering — but the 49ers can move quickly on the hottest coaching candidate in football after satisfying the Rooney Rule Wednesday morning. At this point, Harbaugh looks like a virtual lock to be the 49ers’ head coach assuming he wants to the job and doesn’t play hardball by bringing the Dolphins or Broncos into the mix. The Niners can offer the most power.

I comment on certain players because that’s the way this blog flows.
But to say I have “my guys” is a stretch, IMO. I think “my guys” are the best ones at their position, on this team, at this time.
Who would you say are “my guys”?
And please don’t say Jason Campbell. Just because I don’t realistically see us getting anyone better, and I think he is better than Gardowski does not make him my guy. I’d take plenty of QBs over him, if they were available.

yes Mistic, one question
why is Oakland the only team with serious/legit interest in Hue Jackson as a HC candidate?
====================================================
This doesnt bother me at all, even if it is true. however he is interviewing as we speak.
None the less, did anybody want madden before he was head coach, or flores? What about chucky?
before anybody says stop going so far back into the past, how about mike tomlin? he wasnt red hot candidate.
It doesnt matter who else is interested, it only matters that davis picks the right guy, and i think he has.

I’m so happy we fired Cable. Now it’s time to fire Marshall and Lal.
-Marshall: it’s the same results as R Ryans Defense. We are top 10 against the pass, but we still allow too many yards against the run, and we can’t blame the offense anymore. I’m also sick of his S blitz, and who has a package that takes all the CBs off the field in a passing situation?!?!?! Crazzzzy!
-Lal: look how we devolop our young WRs!

Satele improved dramatically as the season went on, but his pass blocking is still suspect. Still, it’s not going to be an easy position for the Raiders to automatically upgrade unless Wizniewski or Pouncey fall to the Raiders in the second round.
Best bet is to re-sign him on the cheap and draft Wisconsin C/G John Moffitt to see if he can do any better.

From Don Banks’ column:
“Oakland Raiders
Why it makes sense: Stop me if you’re heard this one before, but Harbaugh knows someone in the Raiders organization. Guy named Al Davis. I think he runs the place. Harbaugh was a Raiders offensive assistant in 2002-03 under head coach Bill Callahan, and he and Davis have remained friends. Davis certainly is intrigued by Harbaugh’s coaching work at Stanford, in his proverbial bay area backyard. Sources say one reason Davis moved so uncharacteristically quick in letting go of head coach Tom Cable this week was because he thinks he has a legitimate shot of enticing Harbaugh to Oakland.
Why it may not work: It’s our considered opinion that Davis is delusional if he thinks he’s going to talk Harbaugh into the Raiders job, which isn’t exactly the league’s plum assignment in terms of working environment and hands-off ownership. The chances are greater that Harbaugh sees the Raiders’ interest as a way of leveraging his best possible deal out of the cross-bay 49ers, because we all know how much Davis likes losing any battle to the folks in San Francisco.
And did we mention the Raiders aren’t known for paying head coaches even a fraction of the money Harbaugh is said to be seeking?
Read more: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writers/don_banks/01/05/jim-harbaugh-nfl/index.html#ixzz1AC8jueIk”
Lots of words to say “Hahahahah, no way Harbaugh coaches the Raiders. But he will use Al as a tool to jack up his asking price.”
January 5th, 2011 at 12:30 pm
While the players responded well to Cable, most of them really like Jackson, too. He came from Baltimore and made as big an impression on the practice field as on game day, when the Raiders scored 213 more points than in 2009.
His energy and trash-talking to defensive players was a highlight of training camp, and Jackson made a point to get to know all the players — not just the offensive ones. Before each game, he could be seen during warmups going player to player, offering a quick pep talk followed by a jab to the chest, handshake or pat on the back.
Jackson often called Davis “Coach Davis,” and for all we know Davis called him “Coach Jackson” back all season.

Still not sure what a new DC will/would do differently than Marshall.
The Raiders problems with stopping the run stem from a scheme where all four defensive linemen freelance in an attempt to get to the ball carrier, instead of playing disciplined and staying in their gaps, occupying blocks so the linebackers can come clean up.
Unless Al finally lets his coaches not rely almost entirely on natural pressure on the QB from the four-man front, the Raiders are still going to give up the occasional (or frequent) big running play.
January 5th, 2011 at 12:32 pm
al wants his philosophy above all even if it doesn’t fit his handpicked players. wants vertical passing game with seven step drops even though jc has stated early in the season that he does not feel that is a strength for him and lets not even mention his wr’s being greener than green and not reliable in routes or hands or that the line is made for running not passing. defense is all about line play if they play their butts off each and every snap then we have a chance.

Anyone with a big arm you can scratch off this list. You can put Mcnabb on here though he fits his west cost philosphy type of qb. He’s built this team for a vertical pass offense so you can forget Gruden.

January 5th, 2011 at 1:14 pm
I couldn’t disagree more with the post about John Marshall. You can’t compare his defense to Rob Ryan’s. Rob Ryan is a 3-4 defensive coordinator like his brother. He tried to implement that his 1st or 2nd season here with the likes of Tyler Brayton and Grant Irons playing OLB and Warren Sapp playing the Richard Seymour NE Patriots role as a 3-4 Defensive End. That is trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. Those just weren’t the players for that system, so we never saw what Rob Ryan could have done if he was allowed to build a defense like that over a few seasons. So when that failed miserably, he was forced to play a vanilla 4-3 man-to-man defense throughout his final few years here, by Davis. The same problems kept occurring no matter which players were brought in or upgraded. The problem was, and is always against the run. That is because when you play man-to-man the corners and linebackers have an assignment to follow their man. This gets the corners back turned to the line of scrimmage and preoccupied, and opens things up for the running backs to find more lanes. The Raiders can play tough on the D-line all game, but ONE or two bad run fits by a D-Linemen or linebacker and it is nothing but open space for the running backs. It’s not that the players aren’t good, or that Marshall or Ryan weren’t good coordinators. It is that the Raiders play the same type of defense almost always and other teams know that so they are susceptible to a big gash run sooner or later. So the opposing teams never abandon the run against the Raiders. This season, it seemed to improve because we upgraded the talent level of the defense quit a bit, so they were able to have the occasional game where they played dominate defense. Like the first Denver and the Seattle game. That’s mainly because the D-Line was ferocious and did not allow running lanes. But the minute they did, you saw what would happen. Most every game you can recall a gashing huge run allowed by our defense. It would be just like old times with Kirk Morrison and Thomas Howard on the field. ONE PLAY by the running back and he has his 100+ yard game because he got 70 yards on one play. I truly believe that as long as Davis is around this would never change no matter who the coordinator is. Firing John Marshall does nothing besides make the players have to learn something new from a different coordinator, not to mention more turnover which could be the last straw for free agents to want out like Seymour. Where would we be without him???

Someone up there posted an objection to calling Randy Hanson a “skinny assistant”, and then stated he was 6′3″and 190lbs.That is a twig!!Why would any idiot bring up Randy Hanson anyway?(Besides my horrified reaction, of course).I’m sorry, but now that they dumped Tom Cable, will there be lobbying for Randy Hanson in Raiderville? Is Al on PurpleDrank?I have always considered Al Davis the “Evel Knievel” of football, but this decision was probably made a while ago.Too bad for Tom, but he has achieved a certain cachet for inspiring the uninspirable. It will be interesting to see how this shakes out,is there a Dark Horse head coach looming? Is it the obvious Hue Jackson?Who will the coordinators be?If Hanson resurfaces, FTW, I’m moving to Maui to fish.

Chris Mortensen said something on Mike and Mike this morning about Harbaugh and the Raiders being a possibility with Mike Lombardi coming back to Oakland.
What did Al say about Lombardi at the Kiffin presser? He has a lot of ability? Something like that.
Lombardi fills the buffer roll like Bruce Allen did before him?
You have to remember, Harbaugh was here when things were good. He knows people can succeed under Al Davis.

al can’t win all by himself, but he can sure lose all by himself. that’s why he would rather get the limelight for discovering head coaches rather than share the limelight with a great head coach because he’d rather get all the attnetion himself. in some ways when you are that old you revert back to being childish to get attention. his age is a real issue.

#1 reason Hue Jackson will become the next Raider Coach, he loves cheeseburgers from McDonalds and KFC Coleslaw
January 5th, 2011 at 1:50 pm
Mistic,
Not anti-Hue at all. He brought a competitive atmosphere to the entire offense. Wasn’t scared to bench guys, from Campbell to DHB to Mario Henderson. 3 of Al’s pets.
It’s about value. Hue was a good and potentially great OC. He is an anknown at HC. He’s never been the head cheese, anywhere at anytime. Cable was the same way, and it took him 20 games to settle him down. Hue made rookie mistakes last year, and will probably make rookie mistakes in 2011.
I look at Hue as a potentially one step backwards for two steps forward scenario.

We have a much better roster tha the whiners.
Harbaugh, however, has let it out that Michigan offered him $5 million and it wasn’t enough because he wants $7 million.
The whiners can’t afford that.
Harbaugh is also asking too much for the Raiders since Al’s offer is somewhere between a nickle and a free ticket to a game.
Harbaugh may just end up in Miami.

Of course, that’s the convenient excuse of any owner. But you’re implying that Davis has a good track record of assessing talent and paying accordingly. Recent history suggests otherwise.

January 6th, 2011 at 5:10 pm
John Fox for coach;
a) He’s a defense first coach, who will fix the d and get them playing top tier D, week in and week out
b) He runs the ball, and throws deep, which fits Al’s likes, and can keep Hue as O coordinator
c) He took Carolina to the SB with Jake “pick” Delhomme at qb, so JC would be a huge upgrade.
I mean Carolina in a SB? He’d be a great pick!
