Poole, Kawakami chime in

Share

In an otherwise slow day as the Raiders and Al Davis take their time in naming Hue Jackson (OK, that’s just reading the tea leaves, nothing approaching official) the new head coach, a couple of viewpoints from columnists Monte Poole and Tim Kawakami, neither of whom gets particularly warm greetings when they visit the team facility in Alameda.

In his column for Thursday’s Bay Area News Group papers, Poole writes why Asomugha’s days with the Raiders are probably over.

In his San Jose Mercury blog, Kawakami is of the belief that Davis thought he was going to land new 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh at a discount rate simply because he was Al Davis.

My guess is Poole is on point. Asomugha wants to play for a winner badly, and he has no reason to think after the dismissal of Tom Cable, 25 or more free agents and the current labor unrest that Davis will negotiate the difficult landscape and build on the 8-8 record in 2010.

Maybe Kawakami has information he can’t reveal _ those sneaky columnists are like that _ but I’m having a hard time believing Davis didn’t realize Harbaugh was well out of his price range. Here’s a guy who has for years correctly forecast what NFL TV deals are going to be worth and he doesn’t understand that Harbaugh has become the hottest property in the coaching landscape?

He doesn’t chase the big-money guys. Never has.

Any shot Davis had at Harbaugh was when he was an up-and-comer (think Sarkisian and Kiffin), either out of the University of San Diego or his first year or two at Stanford before he became the Next Big Thing.

Id welcome Rob Ryan back..if Al would let him do his thing…im just not sure if I like us in the 3-4

    ++++++++++++++

Didn’t Cleveland “let him do his thing”? How did that work out?

I wouldnt judge too many coaches on how they do in Cleveland..

  • Priesttj,

Billick and Fassel are running out of options, they are both possibilities. I’ve never believed that Gruden would come back, or that we could get Cowher. I wish Gruden would return, but it just isn’t going to happen. People are fooled by what they see of Gruden on TV; how he praises the Raiders and Davis. But how does he really feel? Ask Sean Peyton, who Gruden told to avoid Oakland. Those are his true feelings about the Raiders….not what you see on draft day when he makes an appearance as a talking head.

  • Gruden is NEVER coming back, get over it, people sound like spurned lovers in here sometimes. Gruden doesn’t give a rat’s about the Raiders or their fans.

Hue Jackson, Rob Ryan; those are your realistic candidates.

Agree with most of this. I think keeping Gallery is important though, since he will help with Veldheer.

I do think Loper can take over for Gallery at LG though.

When Loper was in there he played well.

How do you know Gruden told Payton to avoid Oakland? That’s the problem with todays world there’s more spin on spin that everything you hear is just conjecture. Jay Glazier told Sean Payton to avoid Oakland I’m not sure Payton and Gruden even know each other.

Payton wanted to come here and to signed the contract. Parcells didn’t want to lose and convinced JJ to give him a lot of money to stay.

The rumor mill never stops churning…

Congrats to David Shaw for taking the reigns at Stanford.

    ^^^^^^^
    Agreed!

Glad they promoted Shaw for the job. A no brainer really. Offensive Coaching continuity is important for Stanford since Luck is staying and it will help with recruits.

  • kokomo

The Broncos hired John Fox. Elway tweeted a short while ago. So as expected, we Raiders are the only ones left to hire a coach.

  • priesttj

Everytime someone comes here to interview people will spin it another way. Like they did with Wheisenhunt who wanted the job but the story is he turned it down. But when you get it from him the story is very different.

Truth is none of you know what happened with anyone so just keep posting the same dribble. There is only one person whoknows all the facts and he aint talking…………period

hmmm, should I take your word on it, or Sean Peyton’s word on it? You know, from his BOOK!

  • priesttj

I’ve heard so much crap from his book until I read it for myself I really don’t give a damn. If Gruden told him and he says that then fine by me but I get tired of all the stories about it. I don’t care!

If I’m Sean Payton I do what I want to do not what someone tells me to do. But he’s been very successful so good for him.

Try and focus Priest! The conversation was about whether or not Gruden would return to Oakland. I pointed out that Gruden told Peyton to avoid Oakland, so therefore why would Gruden then turn around and take the job that he tells other people to avoid?

Pretty simple line of reasoning to follow. Well, for most people lol.

  • BSPN reporting John Fox is new HC for the Donkeys…

  • priesttj

There’s so many panic maniacs in here it gets a little ridiculous. Oh Cable’s leaving we’re back to losing again Ohme Ohmy.

Cable was lucky to get what he got, he benched two of the owners QB’s for a little guy who cannot start in this league and what’s worse he LOST!!

If you’re going to tell your boss you don’t agree and that your way is better………you better be right…………..period

  • Priest and I can agree on one thing…..Cable needed to go.

  • priesttj

I got it the first time Dakota……..but thanks for repeating….

  • Sometimes it is really hard to tell with you Priest.

  • Although I despise all things related to the Cheatriots. Wes Welker got in some nice “foot” references, when talking about the upcoming game with the Jets…Read it at pft.com..

  • DKnight007

Donkies settle for John Fox as HC?

He might turn there defense around, but overall it sounds like the Ponies just couldn’t get anyone else better.

    LOL

  • mikedlopes

this just in.. it appears after having 8 losing seasons with the Raiders, Al Davis has declared himself HC of the franchise. World not so much surprised.

  • RaiderRockstar

John Fox is a good fit for the Donks …

they haven’t had a defensive minded HC since Wade Phillips was fired after the 1994 season

  • RaiderRockstar

    Hue Jackson
    Rob Ryan
    Perry Fewell
    Brian Billick
    Jim Fassel
    Kevin Gilbride
    Denny Green
    Winston Moss

so who will it be ???

  • I wonder if Priest knows John Fox was another guy that told Peyton not to take the Oakland job?

Shhhh, don’t want to upset him…..

  • aig-raiders

John Fox is a good coach and hopefully not going to haunt Al Davis like Shanahan. Damn.

  • aig-raiders

It’s down to Rob Ryan vs Hue Jack. Whoever is more of yes Mr. Davis will win.

  • RaiderRockstar

Can we even cross Josh McDaniels, Brad Childress, Norm Chow or Jeff Jagodzinski off the potential HC’s list yet?

  • Brown get Shurmer, Broncos get Fox….are we now the only job left open?

  • RaiderRockstar

John Fox is a good coach and hopefully not going to haunt Al Davis like Shanahan.

    ***

Fox should be thankful. Al Davis gave him his first Coordinator job in the NFL (1994-1995)

obviously the Giants were impressed enough to hire him as their DC in 1997!

same thing with Mike Shanahan. Al Davis gave him his first Head Coach job in the NFL (1988-1989) … but he had to use 1990-1994 to prove himself worthy as HC material to Donks brass

  • OG-RAIDERRR

SD Union tribune states Asumugha is in talks to sign with the SD CHokers … Now I really hate them !

  • Art Shell just reported: “There is a Fox in the Donk house”!

  • RaiderRockstar

    Hue Jackson
    Rob Ryan
    Perry Fewell
    Brian Billick
    Jim Fassel
    Kevin Gilbride
    Denny Green
    Winston Moss
    Josh McDaniels
    Brad Childress
    Norm Chow
    Jeff Jagodzinski

Pick one and let’s go 4-12. yippee!

  • the more I read about the expiring CBA, the more I think that there will be a strike/lockout/event which prevents the 2011 season from happening.

I think Al Davis will respond by hiring 53 “willing” players, fielding a team and challenging all other organizations to a game. If no other organizations were able to field teams, he would consider that 31 forfeitures and declare the Raiders as 2011 World Champions.

Al is nothing, if not a maverick, I definitely do NOT see him towing the party line with the other owners in these negotiations.

  • LA to TheBay

    John Rauch – QB guy
John Madden – well-rounded, though mostly defensive background
    Tom Flores – QB guy
    Mike Shanahan – RB guy
Art Shell – O Line guy
    Mike White – RB guy
Joe Bugel – O Line guy
    Jon Gruden – QB guy
Bill Callahan – O Line guy
    Norv Turner – QB guy
Art Shell – O Line guy
    Lane Kiffin – QB guy
Tom Cable – O LIne guy

What would make you guys think that a defensive-minded guy is our next head coach?

  • The owners listened to Al the last time the CBA was up…..and they all now regret it.

Remember when Herrera wheeled him into the owners’ meeting and he slapped everyone with his adult diaper and they were so stunned they signed that bad CBA?

  • aig-raiders

Al Davis meddled too much in Fox’s D and he told him to coach them himself, resigned and went on to better things. I think a lot of people respected Fox for standing up to AD.

  • Aso is not worth the money he had been making…

let alone the money it would take to keep him…

we need a talented corner, not the very very very best one that can be had for 16.8 million a year…

but a top notch line on D can make even average corners really really good…

  • RaiderRockstar

    SD can’t stuff the run.

who cares if they sign Asomugha ???

  • RaiderRockstar

I think a lot of people respected Fox for standing up to AD.

    ***

yeah, about like they respected Lane Kiffin!

a locker room NEVER thinks highly of a coach that walks out on them. think Petrino in Atlanta

  • M Lonetree

Fox, Shurmur, Rivera, Garrett, Frazier, Kubiak, Crazy Eyes, Lewis, Sparano – yawn.
Gee, how come NFL owners weren’t pounding on Curly Cable’s door begging him to turn their franchises into “not losers anymore.”

  • aig-raiders

Unlike Kiffin,Fox actually won games and been to the SB as a HC. Had they fire Coughlin, Fox was going to the a top candidate there as well.

  • Dakota,

Do you think this is appropriate:

    Second Amendment Remedies

Erstwhile Senate candidate Sharron Angle (R-NV) found herself in June defending comments she had made six months earlier about the Second Amendment.

“People are really looking toward those Second Amendment remedies and saying, my goodness, what can we do to turn this country around? I’ll tell you, the first thing we need to do is take Harry Reid out,” she said.

“I was speaking broadly,” she said later, noting that she had since changed her phrasing to “defeat Harry Reid.”
