UPDATED: Asomugha speaks . . . sort of

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, January 13th, 2011 at 9:15 pm in Oakland Raiders.

UPDATED WITH APPEARANCE ON ESPN’S FIRST TAKE

Nnamdi Asomugha was a panelist on ESPN’s “First Take” Friday morning and obviously made it clear with producers he wasn’t going to get into any discussions about where he might wind up as a free agent.

In the final segment, co-hosts Dan Graziano and Skip Bayless made their cases for where Asomugha should play while Asomugha listened intently. Graziano said he wanted to see Asomugha team with Darrelle Revis on the New York Jets.

Bayless made an impassioned plea for Asomugha to remain in Oakland.

“To me, you’re on the verge in Oakland of something good or maybe even something great,” Bayless said. So I say, go ahead and play the field and feel the love from everybody and get wined and dined because it’s fun to do and you’ve earned the right to do that. But in the end I want you to stay put.”

Nnamdi Asomugha spoke on the record for the first time since learning he would become an unrestricted free agent after failing to meet likely-to-be-earned incentives, choosing his words carefully in a brief interview with Jim Trotter of Sports Illustrated, who put the item on his Facebook page.

“Honestly, I’m trying not to get too caught up in it right now,” Asomugha said of his impending free agency, noting that nothing can happen until after a collective bargaining agreement is reached.

A link to Asomugha’s comments is above.

This is some messed up action man. Who knows A – Who our head coach will be. Probably Jackson but not guaranteed. B – How many free agents will we lose? C – Will there even be a season? Don’t like this at all.

  6. priesttj Says:

He doesn’t sound to excited to hit the market to me. But as he said it’s new to him. So we’ll see.

All I know is I don’t want to hear how loyal Nnamdi has been because he’s benefitted so much from what has happened to him so far in his careeer. He hasn’t won but everything else has been top of the line for him. Now we’ll see if he is loyal or not. I’m not saying he should be but I am saying we’ll see soon enough.

As far as this dooomsday attitude because Cable is gone I seem to remember everyone saying worse when Kiffin left. That we would never win again because we’re stuck inthe dark ages. I never saw a more imaginative offense in Raider history than what I saw last year. I also feel that Hue Jackson’s credentials are better than what I saw from Gruden before he was hired.

In some ways Hue Jaxkson remainds me of Gruden with his approach to the game. He is extremely aggressive even more so than Gruden. The offense is more explosive and has more variety. His attitude and aptitude for the game is very similar in that he understands the entire offensive package. The Oline and skill positions especially the QB position are very similar to Gruden. I’m not sure he’s as ground oriented as Gruden was but his offense has those components.

I see Hue Jackson as almost in the same mold as Gruden and Kiffin now will he have the same success as Gruden or will he challenge the authority and buck the trend like Kiffin with disregard ofr his bosses wishes.

I se Hue Jackson as a much mature and grounded man who very self assured and self sufficient. If Mr Davis and Hue can work together for the good of the team this could be a great marriage.

  7. CanuckRaider Says:

Well, I guess political correctness is even taking over in the U.S. now. Tried to post about that ridiculous decision by the Canadian Broadcasting Committee to ban “Money For Nothing” from radio play but the censors wouldn’t let my post go through. Wonder if this one is “allowed”?

  8. Raider O Says:

I think Nnamdi will stay. If he is gone, then we can use that his salary to sign more FAs. J Joseph, etc…

  9. priesttj Says:

We’ll lose as many FA’s as the owner wants to lose, irregards to popular opinion Big Al aint stupid he knows exactly what he’s doing and why.

He has to get this right hiring a coach to say you have a coach hired is stupid if that coach is NOT the one YOU really want. There is no need to try to satisfy fans anxieties and the medias expectations the most important thing is to get it right………..period

DJ, I can’t say if this is true or not, but one of my business partners in New York City said he heard from a friend that a hot-dog venor told him that Al and Jon bought some dogs together and said he saw them share a bench in Central Park eating hot-dogs. This is what the vendor told a friend of a partner of mine.

Next time I go to NYC I am going to try and find that hot-dog vendor and see if I can pick his brain.

Please do. I trust that source more than 90% of the “experts” out there right now. He’ll tall you insecret code what you need to know. If he puts two pickles in the hot dog then it’s Hue Jackson, but if he puts on relish instead, then Al is still undecided.

    ===================

Maybe he had one of those ‘ear-shot’ radios and taped their conversation. I’ll see what I can find out, and I will pay very close attention at the condiments.

  12. priesttj Says:

My guess is you’re right Raider O unless Nnamdi can go where he is sure to win a ring he probably opt for the known. Charles Woodson has put up great #’s since he left but the only SB he’s played in was with the silver and black. So which memory is more precious to him?? at this point I would bet that SB appearance.

If he can get back there and win it then the move was worth it. He’s been on muc better teams than the Raiders have had since he left but still no ring.

  13. CanuckRaider Says:

Woodson might get there this year. My money says the Pack take the Falcons this weekend.

  14. Raider O Says:

Al can/ will take his time with the HC issue? Hue and the rest of the stafff can’t do much, Al can still add coaches, but he will not lose Hue and the staff since there are no more HC positions available.

Al is a smart business man, but I don’t know if that’s the best thing for the team. Smart business moves are not always the best moves for the football team IMHO.

  15. priesttj Says:

Tom Brdy did an interview with Mike Lombardi and it was very insightful into a QB’s mental picture. He was very candid in how a QB thinks, he said the biggest thing is can he trust the reciever if he cannot he wont throw to him and he will tell the guy why he doesn’t.

  16. Raider O Says:

    BHP,

I think Nnamdi is a defferent type of player. He is really involved n the community, he loves the bay area, and he was committed to helping the Raiders improve. He wasn’t tagged 2 years ago, but he still signed with us (and it wasn’t because of Cable).

    ——————-

Sounds like a pre-empted excuse for Campbell already.

  18. Raider O Says:

Sir Charles left Ohio to go play in Mich, he also left the Raiders to go play in GB, but I still like the guy a lot.

  19. priesttj Says:

The interview has nothing to do with Campbell at all it’s an insightful interview I thought it would help some understand what a QB is thinking when he plays. Forget Campbell.

  20. RAIDERMAN99 Says:

What’s the rush to officially appoint Hue as the HC ?

One possible negative ramification would be that Hue gets ticked off and bolts.

Likelyhood of this happening ? Next to zero.

Then there’s the chance that the Raids might miss out on signing or retaining a free agent due to the delay of naming the new HC.

Chances of this happening ? Slim and next to none.

Guys, there’s no reason to panic over not extending Cable and immediately announcing his replacement.

Lechler is a helluva punter, but please don’t subscribe to his ‘the sky is falling’ perspective or the media’s doomsday prognostications and speculations.

I believe things are going to work out just fine and the Raider upswing is going to continue in 2011 (if indeed there’s a season).

But the Raids still have to find another QB.

    JaJason sucks.

  21. Raider O Says:

JC wasn’t the problem. We were 6/7th in scoring. What killed us was our defense allowing 30+ points in 6 games. I’m not saying our offense is great, but we were great rushing (2nd), and we scored points.

    Forget Campbell.
    =================================

At last, a post I wholeheartedly agree with.

  23. priesttj Says:

What was so striking about the interview was when he said even when a guy is open if he didn’t run the right route he may not throw it to him because he wants to teach him if he keeps doing it he may end up on the bench. Most QB’s would throw it but he uses it as a teach mechanism, I thought that very interesting.

  24. luvmarvhub Says:

“We’ll lose as many FA’s as the owner wants to lose, irregards to popular opinion Big Al aint stupid he knows exactly what he’s doing and why.”

Yes, he does–Big Al (actually he’s not really big in any way, now is he?) knows exactly what will salve his ego–that is the only “why” Al takes any action.

This has always been his motivator. The problem is that there was a day and an age in which he could both salve his ego AND be the owner of a winning franchise. At one time the competition was limited to shoddily-run franchises that existed as toys and tax breaks. A lot has changed. Now he is the one limited, by both money and Ego. (The money could be less of a problem if he could sell tickets, but Ego keeps sales down). “His way” no longer produces winners.

  26. priesttj Says:

Raider O Campbell was the problem he was the solution. He is the solution for that position until we can get someone better he is plenty good enough to win big with. That kid can play the position contrary to popular opinion.

  27. RAIDERMAN99 Says:

I’m trying to imagine JaJason not throwing to an open reciever because he ran the wrong route.

    Not that hard to do.

Now I’m trying to imagine JaJason just throwing to an open reciever and hitting him.

    A little more difficult.

Now I’m trying to imagine the Raiders winning a SB or even making the playoffs with JaJason at QB.

    Can’t do it.

    JaJason sucks.

  28. Kirk Says:

We need to upgrade the quarterback position and the O line. Use Aso’s money to do it.

Then we need to draft a run stuffing defensive tackle.

  29. Raider O Says:

JC is not a great QB, but he doesn’t have a lot of great talent around him.
Look at a guy like M Ryan, he has White, Gonzalez, Turner, and a good OL.

  30. priesttj Says:

Wins sells tickets, who cares about tickets start winning and the rest will take care of itself.

  31. djohnnyg Says:

They’re on NFLN picking there choice of who has the most dysfuctional franchise and Mooch was first up and said ‘Oakland Raiders. They beat up on Kansas City, sweep their division, go 8-8, best they’ve looked in years and then fire MY BUDDY Tom Cable.” Then Theismann siad “I think it’s Washington”.

Surprised me to hear Theismann slam his former team and oh my dear Mike Shanahan? How could the great Mike Shanahan be the HC of the most dysfunctional franchise? No way!

Mooch was visibly ticked about Cable. I think they were good buddies like he said, but Mooch does not care if the Raiders win a single game make no mistake. I don’t know if he was a “hater” before Cable got axed, but he has no vested interest in the Raiders success he’s just mad his “buddy” is out in Oakland.

  32. RAIDERMAN99 Says:

Give JaJason Matt Ryan’s supporting cast and he’d still suck.

    JaJason sucks.

  33. priesttj Says:

Yeah we need to upgrade the QB, do you have any ideas who that will be?

Saying we need to upgrade is great, get someone who can upgrade it. I think JC upgraded that position form the previous year and he;’ll upgrade it from last year as he gets better. But we wont get a Tom Brady off the streets. Get a clue will ya’?

  34. djohnnyg Says:

The thing about these “experts” and Tom Cable is they wanna blast Al for firing him but it’s all becuz he’s “good enough for the Raiders” and no one else. Cable did this he did that but I’d loooove to hear the comments if Cable got hired in Dallas or Pittsburgh as the HC? Ohhhhh now how do you feel about him? “Well, we’re talking about Pittsburgh or Dallas here, ummmm errrr yeah Cable was great FOR THE RAIDERS but, err, ummmmm.

    Yeah. What I thought.

Priest, just throwing this out there, and is not my choice, but it seems like Vince Young has cashed his check with his current team.. and might be a psycho.. but has some talent and the big arm… Al’s kind of guy?

  37. RAIDERMAN99 Says:

Here’s the thing you don’t realize Priest.

JaJason isn’t going to get better. He is who he is.

    And he sucks.

Also it isn’t necessary to get a Tom Brady to upgrade over JaJason.

A healthy Gradkowski is an upgrade.

Hue Jackson knows this, even if you don’t.

Heck, even Al Davis knows this. Unless you’re naive enough to think that Al didn’t sign off on the decision to bench JaJason, not once – but twice, and that Hue didn’t have anything to do with that.

Just the fact that Hue is likely to be the next HC should tell you that JaJason is on very thin ice and would be jettisoned if a more viable option was available.

Most of the posters here have completely written Grads off. Honestly, that’s understandable.

But I’m going to go out on a limb and predict unless Gradkowski has a Stafford shoulder he’s gonna be back in 2011, and will either beat out JaJason for the starting position or replace him very early in the season.

    JaJason sucks.

  38. priesttj Says:

Yeah he liked VY a lot coming out of college. But is he better than Campbell in terms of stability and production I would be somewhat hesitant to make that move unless he came with certain langage in his contract. The guy has quit on his team TWICE.

He wins games though but I would tend to go with a safer Campbell who IMO has great upside.

  39. priesttj Says:

Look Raiderman that is YOUR opinion I happen to differ with that. There is nothing you can tell me to change my mind. So stick to your comic relief and I’ll stick to football………thanks for listening.

Gradkowski is a FREAKIN JOKE FOOL get a damn clue…

  40. KoolKell Says:

To each his own I guess. Seems like he’d be much happier covering a different team.
    ————————————
Whaddya want, cupcakes all day? You worried about his happiness? really?

  41. RAIDERMAN99 Says:

PlunkforHOF, VY would be the classic Raider reclamation that Al loves to pull off.

No doubt VY has issues, but he’s also proven he can win in the NFL.

He’s lightyears better than JC despite his problems.

Don’t know how anyone could have watched JaJason against the Titans, Rams, Steelers, Niners and the first KC game and NOT conclude he sucks.

Then again, there are people that watched JaMoron here for 3 years and still haven’t concluded that he’s a POS.

    Hell yeah, bring VY in.

Raids need to make a move.

    JaJason sucks.

  42. KoolKell Says:

So stick to your comic relief and I’ll stick to football………thanks for listening.

  44. KoolKell Says:

  45. priesttj Says:

I will grant that Canpbell isn’t a great QB by any stretch but to keep vomiting up this idea about Gradkowski borders on madness. That guy has been given more chances than Steve Howe and he isn’t what a team would want in a starter……….period

I will even grant that VY is a better QB IMO than Campbell but Campbell will run a conventional offense. He can run the offense from the pocket better than VY. He reads defenses much better and is much more stabile as an individual.

Now I’ll trade Campbell in the morning for a better player if that can be done. Getting a great QB is everyones quest in the NFL. There are only 6-7 the rest of them you can throw into a grab bag from 10-20 then you have the bottom feeders.

  52. dickv Says:

I have a feeling that Nnamdi will be back. This reminds me of when timmy b hit the market in the 90’s and everyone was convinced that he would go to Denver. timmy B had been critical of the organization before he hit the market and everyone said he desreved a chance to win.

On top of that the usual big fish in the FA market that drive prices up are typically Washington & Dallas: both are dysfunctional and further away from winning than Oakland is if Hue Jack is HC.

New england is the best team in football, Green bay has a young shut down corner, Jets have three good corners (counting 1st rd pick Wilson from Boise st.)

Miami & the Texans are not winners and only advantadge over raiders is the state income tax… I don’t think Nnamdi is too concenred about $ at this point.

The chargers are a joke as long as Norvel turner is the acting offensive coordinator and alex Smith is acting like a knock off Al Davis.

Nnamdi will be back in Oakland.

We should start hearing some kind of news after this happens.

I look for Rob Ryan to join the Raiders again.

  55. Raiderbuck Says:

Yeah I have supported AD for a long time but I think I’m done after the Cable firing, not because Cable is a great coach but because Cable had people believing for the first time in years fans, players, heck even the press, that the Raiders were something other than toilet floaters. The great AD has been wrong wrong wrong and more wrong in the last decade than right. Heck he hasn’t even been close in ten years. HJax is a good guy and yes he has done a lot already and I wish him the best of everything!
AD has this huge shadow that blots out any sun that last season gave us. Now to have done this with all the FA this year was stupid, stupid stupid! We had a good team this year and with a little more confidence the team could have been great! No team can be great if you just knock the legs out from under them every couple of years.
The great AD will pull in Rob Ryan or some dumbass to undermine all the progress this year – it’s a freaking wonder anyone buys a ticket anymore. What smart move has AD done in ten, count them TEN years?
Not one that I can think of,…

It’s like the Tuck Rule broke him,…

  56. RaidingTexas Says:

We’re still debating Gradkowski? What is wrong with you people? Nice guy, lot of heart, but nothing more than backup quality.

  57. JONTRAIN Says:

To say “JaJason sucks” makes me not take you seriously. That’s just a ridiculous statement. The fact is, he is average. In every way. Grads isn’t any better and I think he showed his tru colors a bit this season in terms of his poor decision making.

I would like to bring in a QB who is better than both of them. That’s the only way we can make noise in the playoffs.

But who? Like someone said earlier good qbs are hard to come by. AD coveted VY coming out of college but do y’all really want someone known for not preparing and not studying? That type ofbehavior, IMO, earns someone the “Ja” prefix.

Let’s upgrade OL and WR and see what JC can do in year 2 with Hue.

  79. Just Fire Baby Says:

    Interesting takes from Nnamdi.

First off, he is wearing a silver and black jacket, with the #24 on the side. Not sure what it is, but it looks Raider-ish.

Said that everyone listens to Shane as he is a leader of the team. Nnamdi also said that he didn’t even think it was question whether Cable was coming back or not. He thought for sure he would be here to continue on.

Seems like he didn’t want to go there as far as leaving, and was somewhat upset that it did happen. Golic was trying to get him to talk about what it is like leaving, and Nnamdi shot back that he hasn’t left yet.

  80. J Hill Says:

Are you totally ignoring the impending salary cap?

Eagles are not going to be able to pay Vick, Jackson, AND Nnamdi.

Why would Nnamdi go to Minny to play with Tavaris Jackson?

Nnamdi won’t stab Oakland in the back to go to SD. Just don’t see him as that type of dude. Don’t see him being a fan of that GM the way he’s treated SD players. Besides, I’ll take Jammer or Cason if they take Nnamdi as one of them will have to be cut.

  87. Just Fire Baby Says:

When are we going to get a player go on the record, and when asked about losing Cable, they take the opportunity to talk up Hue Jackson?

Only person who did it was Bruce Gradkowski and he is just trying to keep his gig.

T-Jax is a free agent and I’m willing to bet Minny ends up with one of the following in FA or trade: Carson Palmer, Donovan McNabb or Kevin Kolb

Besides, even if they roll with the youngster Joe Webb he has Peterson, Gerhart, Rice, Harvin, Berrian, Shiancoe (good supporting cast!)

  90. RAIDERMAN99 Says:

Mike Golic is a jerk. Nnamdi is saying it’s tough to think about leaving the Raids and Golic is insistent that he’s as good as gone.

Even after Greenie corrects Golic, saying ‘he doesn’t have to leave’ and Nnamdi is nodding in agreement, Golic still arrogantly implies there’s no way Aso is coming back.

Nnamdi was the diplomat and played it cool regarding letting Cable walk. Said he was very surprised by the decision, that Lechler was entitled to his opinion, but that Davis put alot of thought into the matter. Very careful not to criticize Al.

He knows who signs his checks and is obviously keeping the door open to get some more of them. If Al wants to ante up and match or exceed competing offers theres an excellent chance Nnamdi signs again with the Raids.

Wrong. That simply means the Jets wouldn’t be a good fit. And Revis had WAY more balls thrown at him this year than Nnamdi.

The Jets and Revis are besides the point. Nnamdi has made NO secret that he envies how the Packers use Charles Woodson. That is exactly the type of situation he wants, which was my original point.

There can be NO free agent signings until a collective bargaining agreement is reached.

VY has NOT been released, the soonest he could be is 2/7/11 The day after the Superbowl (this is to prevent him from signing with a playoff team). The Titans will try to get something in trade for him, but no one will bite because they have already said they will release him.

There are over 500 unrestricted free agents this season (under the old CBA rules, could change but not likely). 18 game season will, under NO circumstances play a part in the 2011 season. The soonest that would occur would be 2012. If a CBA is reached shortly before the start of the new season, the start may be postponed by a week to allow for an abbreviated free agency period. That’s not what I mean at all. Of course if you have one DB who is clearly the best playing man to man, or even zone, you can avoid him, if you choose.

For instance, in GB, CWood often lines up in the slot and either covers the slot receiver, drops into a free roam type zone in the shallow middle, or blitzes. You never know. I gave you your props for that, but that doesn’t make you right about EVERYTHING … and it’s funny thats you’re gloating about Dell’s FF league when just a few months ago you admitted not caring about it. (before winning) You focused more on your “other” league, remember?

He kicked Russell, Fargas, Walker, Watkins, Stewart, Green, Morris, etc TO THE CURB!

Seems to me like he should have been swept out with Cable!

That’s called “mixing it up”, which is the exact opposite of what the Raiders have done with Nnnamdi.
    ************
True, Green Bay also has had the luxury of a better secondary around CWood as well. Nnamdi is ignored (regardless of where he may line up) because the path of least resistance is around him. We STILL gave up 29 TD passes this year. Lets not forget that Charles Woodson played in the same system as Nnamdi and he made plays.

    *****

Good point. But I wonder if we mixed up our coverages more, would our secondary play better or worse? In other words, if we weren’t stuck in the 70’s scheme wise, would we be giving up 29 TD passes?

Does a falling tree make noise if no one is around.

  158. RAIDERMAN99 Says:

Of course Hue pulled JaJason for Grads.

How could he not have ?

JaJason absolutely bombs in Tenn. He’s tipping off plays, taking a knee on a live play, pansy sliding 2 yards short of an attainable first down, and the Raids get blown out.

Next up is the 1-15 Rams at home, and JaJason is still stinking the joint up. The offense can’t do squat with him. If the Raids lose this game at home to the worst team in the NFL the previous year, the season is over before it even had a chance to get started.

Rightfully, JaJason gets the hook, Grads comes in, suddenly there’s life and the Raids win.

What was Hue supposed to do ? Stick with JaJason and lose to the Rams at home ? And please don’t tell me JaJason would have won that game in the 2nd half.

Don’t forget, Hue had the benefit of seeing JaJason in practice as well. Hue has the advantage of knowing if JaJason knew the entire playbook (he admitted he didn’t). Hue got to see the pre-season game against SF when Grads noticebly outplayed JaJason. Too bad Grads wasn’t available against SF in the regular season as JaJason got the chance to stink it up again and cost the Raids that game.

People that criticize Hue for yanking JaJason the first time are out of their minds.

Giving Bruce the start against Miami was the wrong thing to do. Not because JaJason had done anything to claim the starting position or given any indication he was better than Grads – it was a mistake only because Grads clearly wasn’t 100%. Grads shouldn’t have even attempted to play and Hue should have known his shoulder still wasn’t right.

I’ll say it again, even though no one believes it…a healthy Grads will beat out JaJason again if they’re both on the roster. If BG doesn’t have a Matt Stafford shoulder condition, he’ll take the starting slot from JaJason again, with Hue’s approval.

Not because Bruce is necessarily the next Drew Brees, but because…

    JaJason sucks.

  159. RaiderRockstar Says:

why is Hue even being considered for the HC position?

    ***

#1 because he’s on the current staff
#2 because he’s an offensive coach & play caller
#3 because he wants the job

“Seems to me like he should have been swept out with Cable!”

If it works out that way, so be it. I’m willing to give him another year as OC, but NOT a promotion. If he maintains our already good rushing attack and gets our Passing Game to Top 12 or 15 then I’ll consider a promotion. I’d like to see if he plays QB switcheroo again and either gets something out of DHB in Year #3 (when most receivers start to “get it”) or benches him

  163. djohnnyg Says:

Folks like to rip on Cable for benching JC in the St. Louis game cuz it screwed up the continuity etc. but you have to remember where we were at that point in the season.

We just came off a thumping against Tenn to open what was supposed to be the season we turn it around. You are losing to a team that went 1-15 the prior year and you’re at home. Your offense is doing NOTHING and your QB looks awful. The very real risk of going 0-2 to start the year is very real at that point and talk about HOT SEAT for Cable???

If he doesn’t put Grads in WE LOSE PERIOD!

I can’t vouch for the other changes with QB, but that one had to be done.

  164. J Hill Says:

Didn’t Nnamdi just shadow Reggie Wayne?

And I said most of the season, not all. Coming back off that ankle injury, we didn’t see it as much. But prior to the ankle injury, Nnamdi was all over the place.

  165. JONTRAIN Says:

He was lined up against Wayne a lot only because ironically, the Colts use Wayne almost exclusively on the left side.

Nnamdi didn’t shadow anybody this year except L Fitz. That’s it. It drove me nuts.

    LOL

McFadden wouldn’t run wild and set up the play action pass with JCamp in the game?

the defense made some adjustments at halftime to completely shut down Steven Jackson in the second half too.

  167. buckeyeraider Says:

It sure seemed like Nnamdi took offense to Skip Bayless’ disbelief that Seattle could lose to Oakland 33-3. I think Nnam’s still a Raider at heart.

I may be being a little overly optimistic, but I think he’s coming back, for several reasons.

First, he’s a Cal guy. he has deep roots in the community. Very active in the community. I think he takes that stuff very serioulsy. It’s personal to him.

Secondly, He defenitely won’t have a shortage of offers. He’ll probably make the rounds and listen to what some teams have to say. Might be a tough call for him, but ultimately I don’t think anybody will be willing to outbid Al.

In Madden’s books he mentioned an ongoing debate he had with Davis. they both agreed that QB was obviously the most important position on a football team. Big John though an OT to protect the QB’s blindside was next Priority. Al Davis thought a shutdown corner was second only to QB in value to a football team.

Al has arguably the best corner in football on his team. I don’t believe anybody is going to outbid him for #21’s services. I just hope it doesn’t take 16 mil per. It shouldn’t.

Finally, Nnamdi can resign in Oakland without losing any face. he might take some heat, but it’s not like Oakland was 4-12 last year. He can legitimately say ..hey we were right in the thick of things last year…and I don’t want to bail on my teammates when we are right on the cusp of winning the division.

Nnamdi can cash Al’s big checks and look himself in the mirror and honestly feel like he’s doing the right thing. He could ultimately bolt to New England and try to win him a quick, cheap ring…But He doesn’t seem like that type of guy to me.

  168. J Hill Says:

    RRS,

Did you ever get an answet to how Al allows his QB to be benched but not DHB?

  169. RaiderReggie Says:

I have been a Raiders fan for 40 freaking years and for the last 8 years, A.D. has been pissing me off. Six coaches in that time span is insane. The Pittsburgh Steelers had 4 coaches in the last 40 years and that’s why they are in the playoffs just about every year. I now live on the east coast and it is embarrassing when I tell people that I am a Raider fan but I still stand tall and represent.

  170. JONTRAIN Says:

    Raiderman,

even though you are correct in a lot about what you say about JC, there’s just no reason to think that it was Hue that pulled Grads against STL. Hue’s seat wasn’t hot. Cable’s was. Hue knew that the HC job was potentially his the day he signed on. No way he rocks the boat with Al that early on.

I agreed with the decision to pull JC out of that game. It was the right thing to do at the time. But it was Cable’s call, not Hue.

  171. raidertay Says:

The RAiders have the highest payroll and not much to show for it. With 27 free agents maybe its time to purge this roster.

  172. Dakota Says:

  173. M Lonetree Says:

FYI, what happened three months ago in a halftime adjustment is of no consequence. You do what you have to do to win any given Sunday.
A QB is stinking it up, put in a reliever.
A RB is fumbling, put in another.
A PR is fielding punts at the three, put in someone else.
A WR is dropping passes, go to another WR.

better play calling and personnel usage (benching DHB) could have us better than 23rd. Perhaps you could blame player execution, but the only free agents at QB & WR next year are Grads, Boller, Higgins & Nmiller

why didn’t we play a lineman at FB and have Reece play TE when Zmiller was hurt? or use B Myers more?

I’m think we’ll have 4 new starters on the OL this year, which could be very good or very bad. Get the right OL Coach and players to fit the system and that could be the difference in jumping 8 spots in Passing O if we could also get WR drops under control!

Please remember the fact that our 23rd ranked passing offense was DEFINITELY hampered by Tom Cable’s Olines inability to pass block. Both of our QBs were smacked around all season, and that did play a part in our rankings.

As far as DHB, I have never been questioned as to how Hue could bench Campbell but not DHB, but I could take some guesses.
    1. DHBs shoddy performance is far less consequential than Campbells
    2. Davis drafted DHB #7 overall, he traded away a future 4th rounder for Campbell, so DHB is going to be held in higher regard to Davis
    3. Does anyone REALLY think our passing Offense would have been in the top 15 with Nick Miller starting over DHB? Our wide receiving core, aside from Ford and occasionaly Murphy, is crap.

Im not saying Hue Jackson is the greatest thing since sliced bread, but come on dude, the most important stat in the game is points scored. I bought the hype when Jerry Mac was tweeting about DHB catching everyting thrown his way in OTA’s & camp … then the Raiders stupidly issued that statement about him being the next big thing at WR!

DHBeast was Jhill’s and I did use it on occasion (sometimes sarcastically) and I told Richochet that DHB would outplay Terrell Owens this year, LOL

but it was obvious early on in the regular season that the kid wasn’t ready and shouldn’t be out there with the big boys. Hue, Ted or Sanjay should have noticed this and let him continue to work on his craft in-house. Murphy & Ford were the starters and when injuries came JLH should have been the guy. If they weren’t confident in this trio they should have made a plea to Al Davis to get a veteran in there asap!

I dont think he will see Gates money either. Miller is invaluable to our offense. Dont complain about our 23rd ranked pass offense and then say we can replace our top reciever, and our ONLY consistant receiver with a 6th rounder.

The CBA was mentioned earlier this morning.

If this thing draws out and we miss pre season games and all, I can’t see many FA changing teams. There will be what 2 weeks or so before the start of the season?

I think there is going to be a lot less movement than you think. Guys are going to be snatching up offers pretty much on a first come first serve basis, IMO.

  227. DMAC Says:

    Morning peoples!

  228. BART Bridge Blues Says:

Honestly, with all the other head coaching jobs in the NFL filled, and Hue Jax still sitting pretty as the OC, I think Al played this one pretty smart.

Cable was very popular with the players but that was his only positive quality. As for his improving the mentality of the team, I dunno? He was the coach all last year, and they got their a$$ stomped by several teams while producing atrocious offensive output. This year, they also got stomped by a few teams, but the offense was the difference in beating some below average teams and getting to 8-8. I want to root for Curly, because he was at the helm for our best season since 02′; but I really think Hue’s offense was a more important factor in our semi-success.

If Al makes a play for Rob Ryan as head coach, I wouldnt be surprised or dissapointed. Always liked Rob, but he wasnt much of a coordinator under Al’s thumb, perhaps he can flourish as a Time Out and Challenge Coordinator; just so long as Hue runs our offense.

  229. bcz24 Says:

If they weren’t confident in this trio they should have made a plea to Al Davis to get a veteran in there asap!

Thats completely conjecture. You will never know if they did or not. Just because they towed the party line about our WR core doesnt mean they werent begging Al behind closed doors to bring in somebody.

  230. Raider O Says:

  231. RaiderRockstar Says:

    BBB,

Al Davis played it smart because the Raiders offer the last HC position available and he can now make Jackson or Ryan the lowest paid HC out there and they’d be happy to take it!

… and the players know both candidates

  232. DMAC Says:

Auburn DT Nick Fairly is expected to announce Friday that he’s skipping his senior season to enter the 2011 NFL Draft.
Fairley is fresh of a defensive MVP performance in the BCS National Championship Game with a sack, three tackles for a loss, and a forced fumble. Playing his best in big games throughout the season, Fairley led the SEC with 24 tackles for a loss and had a school-record 11.5 sacks. Though he’ll face questions about his maturity level and penchant for dirty play, Fairley will also draw strong consideration from the Panthers at No. 1 overall. At 6′5/298, he’s a dominant physical talent.

I dont think there will be any change along our O-line next season (assuming there is a season).

    Veldheer is entrenched at LT

Gallery is all talk, nobody is gonna spend more money than the Raiders to bring this guy on as a gaurd.

Satele was solid if not spectacular. He will need replacing eventually, but the debacle against Tenn. is all the warning they need against throwing a rookie center in the mix again.

Carlisle is our most technically proficient lineman. I cant stand the guy, because he looks underpowered at times, but I think he makes everyone around him better and replacing him with B. Campbell right away would be a disaster. Al just wanted to see Campbell get some playing time in a meaningless game, doesnt mean he will force him to start.

Finally Walker; I am the least sure about this one, because Walker is so penalty prone and awful in pass pro, but he was a HUGE part of our running game and I just dont see Henderson of all people replacing him. Maybe we find a rookie than will come on as the year progresses, but game 1, Walker gets the start.

As long as none of his injuries appear to be career threatening, than Zach Miller must be a priority to resign.

The guy has been Oakland’s only reliable, consistant and professional receiving threat for the last four fricking years.

Opposing DC’s know it and gameplan to take him away, too. If the rest of the Raiders passing game could elevate their play to his level, I have no doubt that Z Miller could be a Dallas Clark, Jason Witten type of weapon. Amongst the league’s elite.

The guy seemed to drop more passes this year than I can ever remember. You have to give him credit for trying to tough it out on one leg, basically. Shoot it up, tape it up and go.

The Raiders have struggled forever to find the heir apparent to Todd Christenson. Burned a #1 on Dudley. Second on Doug Jolley. I think to lose Zach just as he enters his prime would be a huge blow for this franchise. A defenite step back for a struggling passing attack.

Geting Zach Miller resigned has to be another high prority for Al. One of many.

Sadly he might be better than those guys, but he still isn’t very good lol.

There is an interesting phenomenon I have observed in the Raider Nation over the course of the last 5 years or so. Things have gone so bad for so long that the Fans tend to glob on to even mediocre play or coaching and then exalt it like it was the best thing since sliced bread. From Cable to Fargas to Gallery to Campbell to Marshall…..

I find that behavior kind of pathetic, but understandable.

  247. SilverNBlackPA Says:

I think Hue will draft a Center. Satele improved this year, but was a liability in pass blocking. We could probably land O’Dowd or Kirkpatrick in the 3rd round.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++

  251. BART Bridge Blues Says:

Zach “The Truth” Miller is a solid, above-average NFL TE. He has great chemistry with all of our QB’s, is already familiar with Hue’s system and is our best 3rd-down reciever. Al should do everything within reason to bring this guy back, but certainly not Antonio Gates money, not even close.

  252. J Hill Says:

  255. SilverNBlackPA Says:

    Random QB thoughts:

Unless Al hasn’t managed to get over his Vince Young love the past 5 seasons, Jason Campbell will be the QB next year. And I think he played well enough the last several games to have earned it.

Charlie Frye will be the 3rd string. If Jerry tells the truth (and I’m sure he is), he’s learned a lot of goodwill in the organization through his hard work and dedication, even showing up to meetings and practices despite being on IR. Then too, I remember Frye talking about Al calling him into his office to chat. Davis only does that with players he really likes. A competent 3rd string for the vet minimum? I’ll take it.

Second string is more complicated. I think Boller is gone, since even in limited action he didn’t do much of anything. Wouldn’t shock me to see Hue argue successfully to have Bruce stick around.

A wildcard might be Matt Leinart who will probably leave Houston and may be another 1st round bust collected by Davis.

  256. J Hill Says:

Your thoughts on Ellis? I think he deserves a spot on the All-star this year.

Haven’t seen enough of his games. Was thinking you needed to trade Curry for a big man.

  257. Raider O Says:

    Dakota,

I don’t think JC is great, and we can upgrade the QB position, but let’s be honest. His play wasn’t that bad considering the talent around him. He is a solid/ avg NFL QB that we can win us games with the right talent around him, good coaching, and a great scheme.

Giants went tithe SB with Collins, and the Ravens won it with Dilfer!
Avg QBs can take their team to the SB, if they have enough talent around them, and good coaching.

  274. SilverNBlackPA Says:

I think Al will franchise Seymour again this year and negotiate a 3 or 4 year deal after.

With being franchised again, Seymour will make over 15 million, which will give him one more big payday before having to take a salary more in line with his age. Especially if the Raiders make the playoffs next year, I have to think he’d be cool with that.

  275. RaiderRockstar Says:

Elway just might be stupid enough to do that.

Tebow & Lloyd remain and they now have a RB tandem of McFadden/Moreno … then they could overspend in FA for a LT or draft one high in RD2

    good for both teams imo

  276. BART Bridge Blues Says:

Developing Ford in our passing game is gonna be huge for our offense. As a rookie, that only played half the season, he is already our best reciever. I really hope they get another big-bodied WR in the draft; this might put me in the minority, but the success of Ford shows me that waiting around for Murphy and DHB to develop or Schilens to develop stronger tendons, might be a fool’s errand. Yes, but I have found that B-ball blogs are full of people that seem to have low IQs….the football fans in here that also have an interest in B-ball tend to be more intelligent for some reason.

Lol good one. Mitch certainly has to get approval from Buss due to the luxury tax, but Mitch makes the call as to most of the players. As in all sports, the Owner makes the call on the superstar players like Kobe and Shaq….but Mitch builds the team around them.

Why? Because he hasnt named Hue his HC publicly yet? Who cares. We all know thats where he is going. Why give Hue a raise before the impending lockout. Not like Hue can do anything with free agents… He can scout the senior bowl and other events as on OC.

No worries if Nnamdi does leave and goes to an in- division rival…like the Chargers. We can just line up DHB on his side of the field and play 10 on 10. Oh wait…on any defense not run by Al, Nnamdi might actually be covering one of our receivers that we would throw to. He deserves better.

    _____________

Correct….which makes me nervous….I think Al might just wait and see and not name a HC until the labor strife is settled….which might save him a couple of million bucks, but would go a long way towards turning off the players. Changing HCs is one thing, but leaving the team hanging for months and months is another story and may force those players out. Al usually keeps the players he wants, but a circus act like that might push those players away.

Why are you assuming there will be a free agent period begining on March 5th?

There is talk that this labor situation might go into August, or even into the regulat season….meaning if we don’t have a coach in place now, the players will not have the playbooks or even get to meet the HC for months and months, and the free agents will be sitting at home watching the Raiders get ridiculed for the next 8 months.

Teams that have hired their HCs now will have had the opportunity for the players to meet the coaches, get their playbooks, and have their offseason expectations set. Our players will be sitting around all offseason with no direction so that Al can maybe save a couple million in the event that there is no season in 2011.

assuming the CBA expires on the 4th; free agency as we know it, no longer exists. Al is no dummy when it comes to the CBA, he must be keenly aware of where the owners land on all of these issues and it seems to me that he is betting on no CBA in the 2011 season, a drastically altered CBA in 2011 than the one we know now or possibly no football in the 2011 season.

I don’t understand the infatuation with Miller..he’s only average IMO.

    —————-

Well he’s led the Raiders in receiving every year since he was drafted. And letting him walk opens up yet another hole on a team that already has too many.

  508. J Hill Says:

We had the Miller discussion earlier today.

Named 20 or so TEs in the league who could replace Miller right now.

    Franchise tag????

    Outta the question!

  509. YoungAmerican Says:

Are those TEs free agents? Would like to see that list.

  510. J Hill Says:

    No, not FAs.

The discussion was where Miller ranked as far as TEs in the league right now in an effort to put a value on him as a FA.

Would like to have him back, but at a fair price. Highest paid TE in the league, or even top 5?

    Pass!

  511. J Hill Says:

    YA

Check post 257 or so ….

  512. YoungAmerican Says:

Well the question really isn’t what his value around the league is. It’s his value to the Raiders.

With the amount of FAs the Raiders have and the caliber of players they are, better to lock up a young, key player for a season and worry about his long-term deal in 2012.

  513. J Hill Says:

Earlier, Asomugha was asked his thoughts on offensive coordinator Hue Jackson possibly being named Oakland’s next head coach.

“He was with us during the 8-8 season, and that was the best season we’ve had in the last eight years. So he understands the players and knows what it takes to win. So I think bringing Hue along has to be the right choice if you’re getting rid of Tom Cable.”

  514. YoungAmerican Says:

Yeah, I mean, there are some good players in that list. A few are better than Miller. Most of them are about on par with him. I don’t think Gresham or Scaife are anywhere close to the kind of player that Miller is, although at least Gresham is young.

Bottom line? Miller is a key player for the Raiders, their most reliable and experienced receiver, and there are several teams in the league who would gladly make a run at him if the Raiders let him test the free agent market. Unless Al Davis is planning on moving up to the first round and taking Kyle Rudolph from ND, there isn’t a player out there that could be brought in for less than Miller would want and have the same impact he has.

  515. KoolKell Says:

    ———————————–
Exactly, just like some people want to value Cable based on what how many interviews he’s had elsewhere.

  516. J Hill Says:

Miller is our best rec primarily speaks to how bad our WRs have been.

Would much rather have Vincent Jackson with the $ your are proposing go to Miller.

Resign Miller at fair market value for a top 20 TE. Enough of this having to make these players the highest paid at their position to stay here.

  517. YoungAmerican Says:

Miller is our best rec primarily speaks to how bad our WRs have been.

    ————–

It also speaks to the inconsistency at the quarterback position. With consistent QB play, who knows what the numbers would look like.

    ————–

Resign Miller at fair market value for a top 20 TE. Enough of this having to make these players the highest paid at their position to stay here.

    ————–

This has been going on for many, many years. That’s the state of the Raiders as an organization, unfortunately.

  518. J Hill Says:

    YA,

I just don’t understand why a QB can complete passes to the RBs, TEs, Jacoby Ford, and Chaz (when he plays) but DHB, Murphy, JLH, etc all need better QB play.

  519. J Hill Says:

This has been going on for many, many years. That’s the state of the Raiders as an organization, unfortunately.

    ——————————————————

Now’s the time to make a change in that regard.

Nnamdi, Huff, and Seymour have earned nice paydays, imo. Miller would be 5th on my list of FA priorities behind Wimbley and only ahead of Bush because he’s a starter.

  520. YoungAmerican Says:

The team as a whole needs better QB play. Not any specific players.

QB play improves = all the offensive skill positions improve

  521. YoungAmerican Says:

Now’s the time to make a change in that regard.

  539. RaiderRetribution Says:

Hopefully the Raiders can move up to get another 2nd round pick.

I truly do not think we need to move up into the 1st round, even if we lose Mr. Asomugha and/or Mr. Seymour and depending on CBA, Raiders might own the entire draft board after the first round because of comensaory picks for the Raiders from losing so many FA, maybe Al hasn’t lost his touch after all.

  540. YoungAmerican Says:

From what I’ve heard, the compensatory picks would be for 2012, not 2011.

I’m really not concerned about the FA’s involved Mr Davis doesn’t lose players he wants to keep. If someone walks without being offered top dollar at his position or relatively what he’s worth then I’l assume he didn’t really wnat that player.

I would doubt very much Al considers race in his hirings of coaches. Others, not for me to say. Al see’s a man from the inside, I am sure.

What Al is looking for in a coach is the cheap. A coach who basically will work for the minimum and take orders.

Hue probably hasn’t been named yet because Hue feels he is worth more than the cheap. Not for me to say what Hue is worth, but maybe he knows the b.s. that comes with being a Raider hc, and probably wants true value for it. Not market value, but true value for having to deal with Al ( which has to be way much more than 2 mil ).

Cables value on the open market may not be squat, but as a Raider hc he guided them to the first season of no 11 losses in 7 years, and the future looked promising. And a hc should have quality guys like Hue and co. to run a functional team. Maybe Hue knows he can be named but doesn’t want some of the cheap assts. Al has in mind.

One other quick note: who knows how Hue feels about Cables walking papers. Did he agree with it, was he taken aback by it, did he see it as an opportunity for him ( I doubt it ), did he think it was under-handed and sinister, or how does he see it? I would really like to know. But breaking the shroud of mystery behind the silver and black curtain is not easy.

why does these guy being mentioned??? BECAUSE THEY ARE GOOD AND HAVE SHOWED IT…

Hue, is a No-name coach, because he only got a 8-8 record, he couldn’t win more than TWO games outside the division and duuuuh btw he was only a goddam OC, not a freaking HC..

The UFL publicly has admitted that the upstart league is having trouble making ends meet.

A memo from Commissioner Michael Huyghue to “the fans of the United Football League,” Huyghue writes that the UFL “will catch up on our bills and resolve any issues with our business partners in due course,” which is an indirect reference to: (1) the fact that players weren’t paid for the final week of the season, weeks after the season ended; and (2) Mark Cuban has recently sued for the recovery of a $5 million loan that is past due.

Huyghue also strongly implied that the league considered not proceeding with a third season. “Last week at our Board Meeting the owners agreed to fund 2011 because they believe in the UFL and they believe in the progress that we have made,” Huyghue said.

    How so?
Where do you get the idea Amy trask knows anything about the NFL, at all? She’s Al’s mouthpiece in court, and not a very good one.
You know what Amy is responsible for? Her title? CEO. For Al Davis. Which means she’s a token exec who is supposed to handle finance, and admin. Duties, year to year, are in charge of ticket sales. Supposed to rep the team at meetings. But she rarely does. And the Raider attendence is dead last in the league.
So, what has Amy ever done that indicates she’s someone to respect, or notice?
John Herrera, Al’s personal puppet, is the one up front. Amy’s pretty much no where to be found.

  613. Dakota Says:

Sources say Oakland Raiders’ Al Davis is close to naming head coach, and it appears it will be offensive coordinator Hue Jackson
    By Steve Corkran
    Oakland Tribune
    Posted: 01/14/2011 07:43:17 PM PST

Raiders managing general partner Al Davis has wrapped up his staff evaluations and shifted his attention toward naming a new head coach. A decision is expected sooner rather than later.

That’s the word emanating from several people familiar with the situation. Barring a last-minute change of mind by Davis, offensive coordinator Hue Jackson is days away from being announced as the replacement for Tom Cable, according to several people who requested anonymity.

Davis typically is the last one to hire a coach during offseasons in which he makes a change. This year won’t be any different, as every other vacancy has been filled.

The only question appears to be when Davis springs the news and presides over a news conference for the first time in more than 16 months.

Davis commenced the interview process Monday, and he has interviewed at least one candidate. Jackson is believed to be the odds-on favorite, even if he hasn’t interviewed yet.

Jackson could not be reached for comment. However, a person close to Jackson said Jackson is prepared to be a head coach in the NFL for the first time in his career and that he fully expects it to be with the Raiders in 2011.

In other news, three-time Pro Bowl cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha said in an ESPN interview that it would be difficult to leave the Raiders after eight seasons.

He is eligible to become an unrestricted free agent, unless he and the Raiders work out a new contract before free agency begins.

Asomugha said in an interview with Sports Illustrated that he was caught off guard by the news that the option year on his contract voided because of his failure to reach any of a number of likely-to-be-earned incentives last season.

“When you’re playing to get into the playoffs, your contract is the last thing on your mind,” said Asomugha in his first interview since the season ended Jan. 2. “It wasn’t until the season ended (that) the reality of the situation set in.”

He added that he hasn’t put too much thought into which team he is going to play for in 2011.

“I’m trying not to get too caught up in it right now,” he said, citing stalled labor negotiations between NFL players and owners. “Plus, it’s my understanding that nothing can really happen until the (collective bargaining agreement) issues are resolved. … The thought of (free agency) is very new to me. It’s tough to describe. I’ve never been in this position before, ever.”
