UPDATED: Asomugha speaks . . . sort of

UPDATED WITH APPEARANCE ON ESPN’S FIRST TAKE

Nnamdi Asomugha was a panelist on ESPN’s “First Take” Friday morning and obviously made it clear with producers he wasn’t going to get into any discussions about where he might wind up as a free agent.

In the final segment, co-hosts Dan Graziano and Skip Bayless made their cases for where Asomugha should play while Asomugha listened intently. Graziano said he wanted to see Asomugha team with Darrelle Revis on the New York Jets.

Bayless made an impassioned plea for Asomugha to remain in Oakland.

“To me, you’re on the verge in Oakland of something good or maybe even something great,” Bayless said. So I say, go ahead and play the field and feel the love from everybody and get wined and dined because it’s fun to do and you’ve earned the right to do that. But in the end I want you to stay put.”

Nnamdi Asomugha spoke on the record for the first time since learning he would become an unrestricted free agent after failing to meet likely-to-be-earned incentives, choosing his words carefully in a brief interview with Jim Trotter of Sports Illustrated, who put the item on his Facebook page.

“Honestly, I’m trying not to get too caught up in it right now,” Asomugha said of his impending free agency, noting that nothing can happen until after a collective bargaining agreement is reached.

A link to Asomugha’s comments is above.

i dont think that it would be that hard its a good system for a saftey that likes action the press on the corners leave the safteys w/alot of oppertunitys and dont forget the great willie for position coach

  • YoungAmerican

    Miller should be franchise tagged.

  • YoungAmerican

The FS in the Raiders’ system has more responsibility than any other player on the field. Huff at the very least has a lot of experience in that role, which would help if the Raider secondary looks a lot different next season.

If he walks, Jarrad Page from NE would be a solid free agent signing. He could compete with Stevie Brown for the starting spot.

I don’t understand the infatuation with Miller..he’s only average IMO.

  • YoungAmerican

I don’t understand the infatuation with Miller..he’s only average IMO.

    —————-

Well he’s led the Raiders in receiving every year since he was drafted. And letting him walk opens up yet another hole on a team that already has too many.

  • J Hill

We had the Miller discussion earlier today.

Named 20 or so TEs in the league who could replace Miller right now.

    Franchise tag????

    Outta the question!

  • YoungAmerican

Are those TEs free agents? Would like to see that list.

  • J Hill

    No, not FAs.

The discussion was where Miller ranked as far as TEs in the league right now in an effort to put a value on him as a FA.

Would like to have him back, but at a fair price. Highest paid TE in the league, or even top 5?

    Pass!

  • J Hill

    YA

Check post 257 or so ….

  • YoungAmerican

Well the question really isn’t what his value around the league is. It’s his value to the Raiders.

With the amount of FAs the Raiders have and the caliber of players they are, better to lock up a young, key player for a season and worry about his long-term deal in 2012.

  • J Hill

Earlier, Asomugha was asked his thoughts on offensive coordinator Hue Jackson possibly being named Oakland’s next head coach.

“He was with us during the 8-8 season, and that was the best season we’ve had in the last eight years. So he understands the players and knows what it takes to win. So I think bringing Hue along has to be the right choice if you’re getting rid of Tom Cable.”

  • YoungAmerican

Yeah, I mean, there are some good players in that list. A few are better than Miller. Most of them are about on par with him. I don’t think Gresham or Scaife are anywhere close to the kind of player that Miller is, although at least Gresham is young.

Bottom line? Miller is a key player for the Raiders, their most reliable and experienced receiver, and there are several teams in the league who would gladly make a run at him if the Raiders let him test the free agent market. Unless Al Davis is planning on moving up to the first round and taking Kyle Rudolph from ND, there isn’t a player out there that could be brought in for less than Miller would want and have the same impact he has.

    ———————————–
Exactly, just like some people want to value Cable based on what how many interviews he’s had elsewhere.

  • J Hill

Miller is our best rec primarily speaks to how bad our WRs have been.

Would much rather have Vincent Jackson with the $ your are proposing go to Miller.

Resign Miller at fair market value for a top 20 TE. Enough of this having to make these players the highest paid at their position to stay here.

  • YoungAmerican

Miller is our best rec primarily speaks to how bad our WRs have been.

    ————–

It also speaks to the inconsistency at the quarterback position. With consistent QB play, who knows what the numbers would look like.

Resign Miller at fair market value for a top 20 TE. Enough of this having to make these players the highest paid at their position to stay here.

    ————–

This has been going on for many, many years. That’s the state of the Raiders as an organization, unfortunately.

  • J Hill

    YA,

I just don’t understand why a QB can complete passes to the RBs, TEs, Jacoby Ford, and Chaz (when he plays) but DHB, Murphy, JLH, etc all need better QB play.

  • J Hill

This has been going on for many, many years. That’s the state of the Raiders as an organization, unfortunately.

    ——————————————————

Now’s the time to make a change in that regard.

Nnamdi, Huff, and Seymour have earned nice paydays, imo. Miller would be 5th on my list of FA priorities behind Wimbley and only ahead of Bush because he’s a starter.

  • YoungAmerican

The team as a whole needs better QB play. Not any specific players.

QB play improves = all the offensive skill positions improve

  • YoungAmerican

Now’s the time to make a change in that regard.

    ————-

Well the easiest ways to do that are through organizational stability and by winning consistently.

Report: Cowboys working to sign Rob Ryan
Posted by Evan Silva on January 14, 2011, 7:06 PM EST
The Dallas Cowboys lost interim defensive coordinator Paul Pasqualoni to the head coaching position at UConn, and they’re closing in on Pasqualoni’s replacement.

According to Jay Glazer of FOX Sports, Dallas has formally begun contract discussions with in-limbo Browns defensive coordinator Rob Ryan. The Cowboys’ top defensive coordinator target may have been Greg Manusky, but he returned to the Chargers on Friday.

Dallas plans to hire Rob Ryan as its defensive coordinator. Cowboys play at Jets next year, which means Rob Ryan at Rex Ryan.

    yeah. no return to Oakland.

So how many dunks does Blake have on our beloved Dubs tonight?

At least 7 I would guess.

  • YoungAmerican

If Rob Ryan was Al’s idea of “upgrading” the DC position, I just hope John Marshall stays…

  • Just Fire Baby

If Zack Miller could block he would be a top 5 TE.

Since he is an awful blocker, he gets in the 9-15 ranger for me.

Remember the awful hold against Jax, when he wiffed on the the guy than just grabbed his jersey from behind, only the most obvious holding call ever?

Would have been nice to have those extra 4 points it cost us at the end of the game.

Looking like Hue will be HC/OC and Marshall will be renewed.

  • RaiderRetribution

just a thought, why not get Zach to lose a few, move him to WR and sign another TE

  • RaiderRetribution

Al should consider talking Blake into being a 2 sports athlete

  • RaiderRetribution

if not a big name HC – Parcells, Cowher, Gruden, Marriuchi, Edwards, Johnson, etc., then Raiders should promote Hue to HC

Raiders need to keep Marshall now.

long gone are the days that any big name would even glance in the direction of the east bay.
when you get assts and college coaches turning down the job, you know the image is shot

  • J Hill

This is Rob Ryan’s first decent roster to play around with. Let’s just say I’ll bet you he has his best season as a DC with DeMarcus Ware and Co.

  • J Hill

When did we ever bring in a big named coach?

Even in the so called good ole days?

  • J Hill

Al isn’t even taking the calls of these so called big names. And he dam sure isn’t calling them and offering 5 or 6 million a year.

  • RaiderRetribution

Hopefully the Raiders can move up to get another 2nd round pick.

I truly do not think we need to move up into the 1st round, even if we lose Mr. Asomugha and/or Mr. Seymour and depending on CBA, Raiders might own the entire draft board after the first round because of comensaory picks for the Raiders from losing so many FA, maybe Al hasn’t lost his touch after all.

  • YoungAmerican

From what I’ve heard, the compensatory picks would be for 2012, not 2011.

  • RaiderRetribution

Then the Raiders will promote Hue, or one possibility is NYG’s def coordinator, Perry Fewell.

  • priesttj

Jhill I wouldn’t say that he’s not taking their calls but he’s got someone strong in his opinion in mind and I know Hue being under contract makes him feel there isn’t any rush. If he wants he can get whomever it is that he’s considering anytime within the next few months prior to the draf.

I’m really not concerned about the FA’s involved Mr Davis doesn’t lose players he wants to keep. If someone walks without being offered top dollar at his position or relatively what he’s worth then I’l assume he didn’t really wnat that player.

  • RaiderRetribution

Y American you are correct 2012, and I knew that and meant that, just had a brain fuse blow out and forgot.

I was actually hoping that it was for 2012, but I doubted my own entusiasm and figured it was for this 2011 draft.

As this years draft is not going to be as deep as next years anyway, which would be even better for the Raiders!

Didn’t need one, then. The Raiders weren’t the laughingstock of the league then, Al Davis wasn’t 80 years old then.

Bill Maher’s show’s on at 7pm, HBO. You’d like it!

    Raiders core players are now:

    Mr. Vehldeer LT
    Mr. Houston DE/DT
    Mr. McClain MLB
    Mr. McFadden RB
    Mr. Ford WR
    Mr. Shaughnessy DE
and a promising 2010 draft class (remaining)

I like who the Raiders have to build around.

so PJ is correct, Al will keep who he wants, other teams will have to pay the $$$ and out spend AL, those that don’t Al will resign at his price, with the exception of those that chose to play for another team for other reasons, closer to hometown/family, or a stronger Super Bowl contender.

  • RaiderRetribution

time to go see the Green Hornet

  • YoungAmerican

Yeah I was going to say, the 2012 draft is going to be better anyways. Especially for offensive linemen. Outside of a few prospects, this year’s crop of offensive tackles in particular isn’t all that great.

I like Morris from Temple and Cannon from TCU, but both those guys will likely be OGs at the next level.

Wisniewski and Moffitt are two linemen I think the Raiders should consider, especially if Moffitt ends up dropping to the fourth round. But other than those guys the Raiders might not have a lot of options, and may be better off targeting the best player available regardless of position.
