McClain, Veldheer, Houston on TSN all-rookie team

Middle linebacker Rolando McClain, left tackle Jared Veldheer and defensive end Lemarr Houston were all named to The Sporting News all-rookie team as selected by a panel of NFL scouts as well as writers and editors.

McClain, the Butkus Award winning linebacker from Alabama, finished third on the team in tackles behind Tyvon Branch and Michael Huff with 85. He started 15 games, missing one due to injury, had six passes defensed, one interception. He was the No. 8 overall pick, replacing Kirk Morrison, who was dealt to Jacksonville.

Veldheer opened the season as the starting center, then was moved to left tackle, splitting time with Mario Henderson until becoming the starter for the last 11 games of the season. Veldheer struggled at times with penalties and against some of the NFL’s best pass rushers (James Harrison, Cameron Wake, Dwight Freeney) but came along much faster than expected considering he played at Division II Hillsdale.

Houston had 39 tackles and five sacks in 15 starts, playing predominantly at right end but also sliding inside to the three-technique more often as the season went on. It’s conceivable Houston could eventually find a home at tackle, particularly if the Raiders don’t retain the services of Richard Seymour. Seymour is an unrestricted free agent who was franchised last season.

Until the NFL Players Association and ownership reach a collective bargaining agreement, the times, dates and rules on free agency will not be known.

Interesting note about the rookie class _ Jacoby Ford, the most sensational in terms of big plays of all the Raiders rookies, was not on the team. The wide receivers were Tampa Bay’s Mike Williams (65 receptions, 964 yards, 11 touchdowns) and Dallas’ Dez Bryant (45 catches, 561 yards, 6 touchdowns in 12 games), while Marc Mariani of Tennessee was the return specialist.

Ford had 25 catches for 470 yards and two touchdowns and set a franchise record with three kickoff returns for touchdowns but did not return punts. Former Raiders coach Tom Cable said the team would look at Ford seriously as a punt return specialist this offseason.

PRO FOOTBALL WEEKLY ALL-ROOKIE TEAM

Just received the Pro Football Weekly All-Rookie team in an e-mail, but it hasn’t posted on their site as yet.

PFW also had McClain and Houston on the first team, but Veldheer was bypassed in favor of Green Bay tackle Bryan Bulaga, along with St. Louis’ Rodger Saffold.

Ford made the PFW team as a kickoff return specialist, with the publication naming Mariani as its punt return specialist.

I remember when getting TSN was the coolest thing ever….each team had its own little column….so I got a bit of Raider news way out here.

Thank god for the internet….or was it Al Gore that invented it? Whatever.

Can’t say I was much overwhelmed by McClain this year. Not here nor there. I guess he’s happy. Probably got some sort of insentive or something for being named to that squad.

The one thing I am looking forward to is the Big Al presser.

Al is a lagger name Jackson the head coach already al is making himself look stupid and childish. quit leaving them and players in limbo

  • confucius400

al will not name a hc till after the superbowl because he is a creature of habit, and he has a habit of naming his coaches till after the superbowl.he has woke up for 80 years and always put his left sock on first if he was to put on his right sock on first in his mind it would be a disaster.

  • confucius400

al will wake up the day after the superbowl put his left sock on first have his bowl of oatmeal with a spoon of honey a drizzle of milk and then name his coach.

  • Silver-and-black666

If this was a corporation with stock holders Al would have been forced out a long time agol.

We the fans are the stock holders its up to us to revolt.

But then again I guess a half empty stadium this season was not a strong enough message!

Well, if Marshall is not being kept as DC, then here is hoping Hue Jackson hires former Eagles DC Sean McDermott to be the new DC.

  • kokomo

Sean McDermott has already been hired as DC of Panthers

  • confucius400

The Oakland Raiders ownership structure is a two-tiered partnership, meaning there are two type of partnership shares. There are the general partner shares, which are the shares that have the power. Only general partners are allowed a vote, and when last made public, Al Davis owns all of those shares. The other type of shares are limited partner shares, which allow for a share in the profits but no control whatsoever.

The upshot of this is that through conventional means, even if every partner not named Al Davis were to vote to remove him, he could just laugh and extend a one-finger salute. When Davis maneuvered his way into being the sole power of the Oakland Raiders back in 1972, he insured that he was essentially dictator for life.

Look for Hue or the old man Al to try and hire someone from the Baltimore coaching staff.

I am a Raider fan and i choose to live with the good the bad and ugly with this team. Al Davis built this thing from the ground up and his unconventional approach , love it or leave it made me a fan so if you don’t like it don’t root for them . Go and jump on the Harbaugh band wagon , good luck with that. No one in this blog has more credentials or accolades than Mr Davis has achieved albeit not as impressive as the past glory years but still an icon and still a rebel. BTW what will you be doing at 81 yrs old ??? Probably not anything to do with the NFL.

  • YoungAmerican

Dean Pees, LBs coach in Baltimore might be a decent pickup for DC. Was the DC in NE from ’06-’09.

I like mcclain. he a big backer. Pro’s for him are: as the season went on I started to see him use his size. he started playin with instinct, started shedding blocks better.cons on him are he still over purses a bit but that’s expected from a rookie.

Now Houston is a beast, I get kick
out of watching him play. I’m constantly rewinding my dvr and focusing on him,he means and nasty on the line of scrimimage. he has a nonstop motor and he plays with an attitude man if you can get 11 other players to play with houston’s attitude will be the right on d.

  • kellygreenninja

    To Thec07:

It’s easy to see why you would have thought that, but go back and actually read the article and Jerry did not make a mistake.

  • dickv

Raiders rookies were the true source of the 2010 resurgence.

Jacoby & Veldeheer solidified the offense in two key postions that have been lacking for the past 5 years.

Mclain ability to cover rb’s out of backfield, and kill recievers going over the middle made offenses think twice.

Houston a big versatile d lineman that can get after the QB…

Bruce campbell is the wild card of the draft.

Stevie Brown displayed more potential in play making than any of his preddeccesors in rookie year: Huff, mitchell, Branch…etc

I still like Walt Mcfadden even though he got torched against Miami…

If the raiders have another draft like this; they will be a playoff team next year regardless of who is coaching

  • da trinity

I like houston he’s a bully, yes we had 21 other starters on this team that played with his passion and intensity we would be in the superbowl

  • DKnight007

It’s going to be Pees or Waufle as the new DC under Hue Jackson.

I would prefer they hire Pees as DC and keep Waufle working with his D-Linemen.

    Lynn,

Yes AD has had a great run at being an owner and GM of an NFL franchise, however you must understand the limitations of an 80 year old man. If you cannot understand that people get older and become less capable of performing daily tasks then I cannot help you.

If you need a drool rag placed on your lap everyday you should not be running a multimillion dollar business its pretty simple if this were a corporation he would have been forced out already.

Yes his first 25 years were incredible but the last 25 have been PATHETIC!!!

Get a grip and get your tongue out of AD’s backside already!

I agree Lynn and I have drank the kool aid for 30 years, been a season ticket holder for 8 years, defende AD in here adn been beat up for it many many times.

But now I have had enough I am pissed off and he is losing people like me for not putting a GM in place, or seeking help running the franchise.

Look at the other franchises there are many people involved to make it run well, not one guy with all the say in every situation.

At least he did try to sue Jamarcus for some of his money back, lol.

    120K!!!!!!

Who just pisses off a high-level employee by fining him for 6% of his salary?? Al could have focused his energy on selling another 500 season tickets and he could have made that 120K probably 3-fold.

Talk about stepping over a $20 to grab the $5.

For most of us the buzz is gone with all that we see going on, but…Has anything really happened yet that has definitively affected our won loss record for 2011/2012?

Cable is gone. That may be a good thing.

Hue is in (we think). That may be a good thing.

Nnamdi is out (most likely?). THAT may even be a good thing. For seven years Nnamdi was on the team shutting everybody down. So what? What did it get us? 5 wins MAX for SEVEN YEARS? Yes, he’s a great player, i’m kissing the ring etc. etc. but…is it remotely possible that he wasn’t good for THIS team? Did his shutdown ability merely make it a 10 on 10 game and nothing else? We know he didn’t make any tackles OR int’s. My point is how much worse could we actually be WITHOUT him?

Nothing bad has actually happened yet. If we are sitting here next season at 1-3 or 0-4 than YES something bad happened, but can we at least entertain the possibility that we are headed for an 11-5 season and the tweaking going on is what is neccessary to get us there?

2011 draft board… expect size & speed across the board.

2nd rd- CB cutis Brown from texas
3rd rd- OT Nate Solder Colorado or Demarcus Love Arkansas

4th rd- WR Deandre Brown Southern Miss or Greg Little: speed may not be up to par, but he will be best value if still on board he falls in draft because off the field problems.

5th Rd. QB Colin Kapernick, tyrod taylor or Ricky stanzi… to back up jason Campbell.

best athelete on board from there.
