Pagano wasn’t coming to Oakland

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, January 19th, 2011 at 12:14 pm in Oakland Raiders.

It appears Chuck Pagano, newly named defensive coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens, was never in the mix for the same job with the Raiders.

Working for the Raiders in 2005 and 2006, the second year through the whole Art Shell fiasco, was enough.

“Two years was plenty,” Pagano told reporters in a story on the National Football Post.

Pagano extended his congratulations to Hue Jackson, with whom he worked on the Ravens staff, noting, “He will earn every cent they pay him. And that won’t be much.”

Pagano left after the 2006 season to become defensive coordinator at the University of North Carolina before joining the Ravens as secondary coach in 2007. He became defensive coordinator Tuesday when Greg Mattison left to become defensive coordinator at the University of Michigan.

I hate to “Close the Door” on him, but I don’t know “How you mend a broken organization” by adding him.

“If you don’t know Al by now” while it may bring “Joy” to some of you to sign Pendergrass, Al really has a “Love TKO” when it comes to his defense, and their is no “Voodoo” that will change it.

Refreshing commentary for once from someone in the coaching fraternity… Coaching the Raiders has in essence become the Crucible for pro coaches. A defining stepping stone. The opportunity to learn in the most intense, stressful and bizarre of environments. A select few realize, however, that working with Davis also provides the chance to tap into one of the great football minds of our time. And despite the outward appearance, Davis’ mind and mental faculties are definitely still there. Fueled by stinginess, vindictiveness, rage, all those feelings you’re mom told you to stop acting out or else those feelings would stay on your face forever. And if you kids out there want to know how this looks like after 80 years, look no further…

Still just 25, Miller set a career high with five TDs in 2010 while reeling in 60 passes for 685 yards. A true three-down player, Miller finished as the No. 10 overall tight end in fantasy football.

Passed on Monte Kiffin as D-coordinator
Keeps bringing in reject QBs so DAVIS can get the
    glory if they resurrect.
Fires nobody head coaches 5 out of 6 times.
Forces his outdated D philosophy on coaches, then fires them when they fail.

Davis has 14 non-playoff seasons in the last 20, and he’s calling others losers.

    D-Rac,

Travis Goethel is a run stuffing beast at MLB.

They just put him at WLB to get some snaps as a rookie.

Unfortunately, the WLB in our defense covers RB’s & TE’s and this guy missed 10 weeks with back surgery!

he’s not gonna come back from an injury like that and run a 4.3 forty man!

former Pro Bowl MLB Zach Thomas looked like Ricky Brown after he had back surgery!

    ***********

Sorry RR I just don’t see it. I am not saying the guy has never made a tackle, he just aint a starter in the NFL, not even in the 3-4. I would be glade tobe wrong, and have him play like Ray, or even like a average MLB, but I don’t see that happnin.

    D-Rac,

    absolutely right on 117.

  122. The Real D-Rac Says:

Reece, McFaddy, Miller, Ford, Bush are all game changers, or can be.

BUT without a real WR or two, and a QB it will all go to waste.

On a team like Green Bay Miller, McFaddy, Reece, and Ford would all be superstars!

  123. BART Bridge Blues Says:

I cant imagine Hue doing anything drastic next season. Continuity is key with a young offense that was showing some promise but still lacked a killer instinct in execution (lots of broken plays and penalties).

Campbell comes back as unquestioned starter

Reece should absolutely stay at FB, I dont think Hue requires a bruising lead-blocker FB, especially with a more powerful line.

Bush and Miller sound like Al’s priorities for FA

The recievers are young, but I have heard that Lal is staying and it seems they are just gonna stay the course with these guys for now

The outside of the line seems set with Walker and Veldheer, and I think Hue will stick with Satele, Carlisle and Gallery/Loper as the starters, but start working some younger/larger guys in at RG and Center as the season progresses (unless they steal a blue-chip interior lineman in the draft: Wisniwski or Pouncey)

  124. RaiderRockstar Says:

    D-Rac,

quit comparing guys to Ray Lewis man. Or even Patrick Willis & Karlos Dansby for that matter!

MLB’s like this don’t grow on trees and McClain is his own man. Same thing with Goethel. Sky is the limit for these young MLB’s. God only knows what they are capable of …

Keith Butler, Winston Moss or Dean Pees as DC would be pretty sweet!

  125. alex7 Says:

Goethel does look undersized to ever dominate in this league. Zach Thomas was a 1 in 100 type for a reason.

With the way the offseason is shaking out thus far, it’s very difficult to tell what the focus of the offseason is going to be.

My money is on new pieces being brought into the secondary, and the offensive line being somewhat neglected yet again.

  129. tuckrulefool Says:

Any reason WAUFLE is not being (very) seriously coinsidered as DC?

HE did for our DLine what Hue did for our offense.

Give him full reign over the whole deal in 2011. Why not?

names beign thown out here are not sure things by ANY stretch and after Al’s’s NIGHTMAE presser (ca you say shoot your organization in the foot, head and torso?) who would come here?

Waufle is under contract and deserves a shot. (If need be make him keep many of his Dline responsibilities too)

This would maintain continuity and he sure had a h3ll of a year. If you had a year like that don’t you ask your boss to consider a promotion?

    Waufle for OAK DC

PS He got production out of fata55 KELLY for pete’s sake!

  130. BART Bridge Blues Says:

Vito at the SF Gate indicated that Lal was not one of the coaches let go. I hope that report is wrong, but if not I can see that the strategy is to just keep growing these guys with consistent position coaching.

  131. YoungAmerican Says:

Waufle has been a defensive line coach for literally his entire career, except for one brief stint as an offensive line coach. He has never called plays on the defensive side of the ball…

But I suppose Al is doing that anyway…

  132. tuckrulefool Says:

While on teh subject of Crazy Al….

Not sure if you saw it but for some reason Davis now has 3-pronged, ET-esque hands…(?)

My mom and dad are 84/85 and in comparison they look like teenagers relative to this guy. I don’t get it.

Unless of course decades of running a team like a MADE-MAN MOBSTER has its own payback that we are all witnessing now. He truly is a nasty, vindictive, petty old man. Sad to see/say that about anyone but true in this case.

Owner insanity aside, I truly think 2011 will be a playoff year with any luck (low injuries) and good offseason moves (decent draft, keep key free agents incl both h-backs…and shore up the run D with an agressive Dcoordinat0r/scheme–> Waufle!).

They do have a tough schedule (AFC east and NFC north) but Denver, KC and SD have the same road to hoe.
    (I just typed hoe)

  133. JT Says:

    Tuckrule,

the reason is the Peter Principle. Why waste one person’s dominance in position A by moving up to position B?

Hue as head coach will mainly be calling the plays, his dominant trait. Not much else for a Raider HC to do.

Waufle as D-coordinator would be asked to do something completely beyond anything he’s ever done. Good recipe for failure.

If you’re going to hire a 1st-time DC, better that it be someone who has experience coaching all units of the D, and maybe even the O (know the enemy!).

  160. ONE I AM Says:

Someone is going to pay him to be a starting RB? I know I would if I needed a full time back.
So should Al pay him starters money when we have that in Run DMC now? I dont think he will, depending on what the tags are like in the new CBA he may franchise or T Tag him. Atleast he could get a pick for him and if not then we will still have him for atleast another year.
