Saunders is Raiders’ OC

UPDATE: No confirmation from the Raiders, but beat writer Steve Corkran reports sources familiar with the situation say Al Saunders has been hired as the Raiders’ offensive coordinator.

Al Saunders will be the Raiders’ offensive coordinator under Hue Jackson, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Saunders interviewed with Jackson on Wednesday and was considered a favorite for the job, having worked with Jackson with the Baltimore Ravens and also having interviewed with Al Davis for the Raiders’ head coaching job on two occasions.

Saunders has been a play-calling coordinator in his previous stops with the Kansas City Chiefs and St. Louis Rams. Jackson said Tuesday he would call the plays this year and was looking to the coordinator to run offensive meetings when he was occupied with other areas of the team.

Branch should compete to start, but I think upgrading the SS position may be one of the easier positions to upgrade.

I went to every game from 99-03 (other than maybe 2 regular season games) up there on Mt. Davis.

The 96 yard TD pass killed us that game. We were up 3-0, Shane just nailed a punt down to the 5, the place was rocking and we had them 3rd and forever.

After that play and lead change the Ravens defense dug in and they were one of the best ever.

I always hate that Breshanan guy for that play. He blitzed C-Wood off the edge and they just easily threw a 96 yard pass, lol.

We get a punt there, and I think we win the Super Bowl that year.

They still have Gannon jerseys? That would be interesting if they didn’t. Our best player in the past 20 years

Gannon our best player in the last 20 years?
    was that a joke?

I think we have a few HOFers and one finalist that would disagree with that.

3-4 defense is overrated IMHO. I rather have 4-3 defense, create pressure from the front 4, play man, and cover 1.
We have great talent on our DL, we have a great 4-3 DL coach, so we should continue to run a 4-3 defense, but we should mix some 3-4 looks too. We have enough atletes/ talent on defense to do that.

    ****************

    O, I agree 100%!

  • Just Fire Baby

It was easy. 3 step drop, free release at the line for Sharpe, quick slant and let the Raiders safeties blow it.

3rd and 18 , backed up deep, with the lead in the AFC championship game, you give up the 8 yard completion and get off the field.

Pope trailing Shannon Sharpe was a stupid defensive call. Where were any LB’s?

Just pisses me off everytime I think about it. Some how get that punt, with that field position…….Super Bowl.

  • big oak boy

if we get a vet WR even if its ochostinko i will buy season tickets it means we are trying to adress needs and that went ok for us this yr i went to 3 games this yr sea sd stl

  • buckeyeraider

    Vegas,
That game makes me sick. Probably second only to the tuck rule. I remember the Lytle fumble vs Broncos in AFC champ game, but I was only like 8 yrs old so I didn’t have the emotional investment, lol.

I’ve unfortunately seen that replay a dozen times or more. I believe D Russell had just buried Dilfer. Like you said it was 3rd and a mile.

This is just speculation on my part, but I swear Marquez Pope pulls his arms away at the last second. I don’t think he wanted to be the goat and get called for PI or holding and give up the automatic 1st down. Instead he gives up a back breaking 96 yarder.

    Still hurts 10 years later.

  • big oak boy

billy jo hobert sealed that loss

  • ohioraider

Gannon is easily ONE of the best Raiders over last twenty years. Top 5 for sure. And as for the leadership qualities he brought to the team, at a time when leadership was sorely lacking (not unlike now), he’s one of the alltime great Raiders.

  • http://atm Raider O

    H E R,

Jason Campbell is a great QB, get over it! lol

  • buckeyeraider

The other thing about that 2000 AFC champ game that bothers me is, Hoying took the Raiders down for a late score.

Hit a big pass play to Randy Jordan I believe, to get em down there. Then Bobby hit “Bad Moon” for a TD that would’ve pulled to 16-10, with about 5 or 6 mins left.

Would Hoying have been able to lead another late scoring drive vs that stout Raven defense to get the win. It wouldn’t have been easy, that was a damn good defense.

Unfotunately we’ll never know because they called Rison for offensive PI. Hoying’s next pass was picked.

That game was sickening for several reasons. 600 lbs of chewed bubblegum pile driving Gannon’s shoulder into the ground. Horse faces 96 yard fluke TD. and finally the game clinching penalty.

A heart breaking way to end what had been a fine season for the Oakland raiders.

  • Just Fire Baby

The offensive PI was such BS too.

I’m usually not one to complain about penalties too much and buy into the Raider conspiracy thing, but that was a horse crap call.

  • TerrapinRaider

    MM34 should start over Branch.

I don’t think the Raiders should run a base 3-4 defense. However, I do not discount the merits of the 3-4 scheme. The teams that run that scheme are the top defenses in the league. They dominate the Top 10.

But the issue at hand is you cannot run a base 3-4 scheme if you don’t have the pieces to do so. Look no further than that mess Denver created uprooting their entire defense to try to go 3-4 when they did not have the players to do so. They tried to covert DEs to LBs. That’s probably the main reason why we got Jarvis Moss – their 1st round pick.

Rob Ryan tried to do the same when he got here and created a mess. Didn’t he have the sap Sapp at DE? A fish outta water.

I agree that the defense could be well served to show the look on occassion to mix things up a bit – but that’s only if they can actually execute! But they should not have a base 3-4 defense. Immediately you lose some good talented players who will ride the pine. And attempt to convert others who are not naturalist.

  • http://raiders.com Albert Bigelow Paine

    Steelers 20 Jets 17
    Packers 27 Bears 7

  • TerrapinRaider

This defense is not far off as presently constituted. You’ve seen them straight dominate opponents with this same scheme. KC was annihalated!

The Giants won the darn SB with a 4-3 causing all kinds of havoc to Brady. Didn’t N.O. run a 4-3 when they won (not sure)? You can win with a 4-3. Indy ran a 4-3 cover 2 scheme for sure and their defense always has a knack for showing up in the playoffs.

The run defense has improved and will only get better. Once they do, this team overall will be too difficult to defeat. With a lights out offense and a lights out defense; who can compete with that? We’re building a bully here! We just needed the right coach to bring it out on a consitent basis.

  • TerrapinRaider

    I should have said “coach(es)”

  • buckeyeraider

anybody to keep an eye on in today’s East-West Shrine game? Any potential future Raiders?

  • TerrapinRaider

If you haven’t read the SF Gate blog on Davis after the press conference, it very interesting.

    A few highlights:

^ Bruce Campbell: “Yeah, he’ll play. He’ll play this year.” (Upset he didn’t play as a rookie?) “Was I upset? Not upset at anyone in particular, just upset, yes. I wish he’d have gotten a chance. But not upset at anyone in particular, no, because I could have resolved that by just telling him, ‘play him,’ and he’d have gotten to play. But Hue is on top of it. He’s gonna play. And he’s the only one who didn’t play this year, of the draft.”

TERRAPIN HERE: So Al doesn’t intervene as we assumed he did? He could have forced the issue but didn’t.

^ Tuesday being a great day: “Oh, I couldn’t wait to get here. I think it’s a beautiful day. I’m happy for Hue Jackson. He’s got a big job. … The big thing, seriously, the gratifying thing, is all the calls from players, and the tweets — they call ‘em tweets, I guess — all those things. Great, great, great, great. Every one of ‘em. And then Michael Huff told Eddie Anderson, he said, I want to be here. You know, all that. I can’t speak for Michael Huff. I’m just saying all the nonsense that went on for a while, about they’re unhappy … Listen, their mentality is like all you people, if you’re dissatisfied then you change, like all of us.”

Charles Woodson played in a defense we called Wolverine. … Do you remember what position he played in Wolverine?” (Kind of a middle safety-linebacker thing) “You remember who knocked the ball out of Brady’s hands?…..But I wanted to say, we were playing Charles Woodson as a safety late in his career with the Raiders, and we were blitzing him a lot. He’s got the strongest hands. He knocks those balls out of your hands when he tackles you. He really does. I remember he got Hines Ward in Pittsburgh, when we played Pittsburgh, I think it was the night Gannon kept throwing. … That’s what he can do. He likes that better than playing corner. Corner, he don’t like it if he sees speed out there, he don’t like it. He’s a good player. Seems our corners are everywhere. Even that little Chris Carr starts for Baltimore. Yep”

That Shannon Sharp TD in the 2000 AFC title game was just Al’s curse. You could blame anything. Blame the corner blitz. Blame Pope and Dorsett’s tackling. Blame it on the rain like Milli Vanillli. Billick said the week before that, before playing Tennessee, that the winner would go to the Super Bowl, completely discounting the Raiders, who had already beaten the Dolphins and were the opponent in wait. Reporters asked him why he was being so bold and he just grinned. Raiders. He employed the Shottenheimer rule. Just keep it close against the Raiders, they’ll find a way to choke.

I had a sinking feeling going into that 2000 AFC Championship, and it didn’t go away once the game started. That Raven D was just too good. Even with a three-point lead, I just didn’t think we would beat them. That was a team of destiny. The 96-yarder pissed me off beyond belief. That it was Shannon Sharp made it even worse. Marquez Pope is on my list of all-time worst Raiders. But I don’t think we would’ve beaten them anyway. Just too good.

Keith Butler LB Coach for the Steelers
or John Mitchell Asst. Head Coach/Defensive Line also of the Steelers.

  • YoungAmerican

2nd round – CB Brandon Burton or C/OG Stephen Wisniewski
3rd round – OG/C John Moffitt or CB Davon House
    4th round – OG/OT Lee Ziemba

  • DKnight007

John Moffitt would be a great pick in Round 3.

I think the Raiders need a beast OLB who can tackle in space and blitz.

I also think they can still run the 4-3 mainly, but whoever is the next DC, needs to implement more 3-4 looks and mix it up more between 4-3 and 3-4.

  • DKnight007

Don’t want to see the Steelers win this game.

They don’t need to be winning anymore Super Bowls.

The Ravens game was a mess we just didn’t play well. hen Gannon got gurt he should’ve left him out instead Gruden put him back in just when Hoying was starting to play well. We were coming back and almost got back into the game when a WR dropped a TD pass to get us withing 3 points. WE should’ve won that game and if Gannon was healthy we would have.

The Ravens stole our SB ……period

  • http://tada Florida Pete

i can still see that fat pig Siragusa doing an “on purpose” elbow drop on Gannon’s arm…

    and no penalty… no ejection…

    really really sucked…

  • Sweep The Leg.

When Gannon went down it was right in front of me (I sit in the first row).

I have never heard a sound like that,a weird “whump” sound. I swear I heard the air come out of him.

I knew it was bad immediately.

  • TerrapinRaider

That team sould have won 2 SBs. Oh well, this team may not have that vet leadership but it much more explosive an d could be just as good if not better when its all said and done.

  • Carl Weathers

I think our new DC will be ex-Raider Winston Moss. He’s done a good job in GB the past few years as the LB coach and he’s been interviewed by Al before Kiffin was hired. I suspect he’ll be in town on Tuesday if the packers lose tomorrow.

  • http://atm Raider O

I think our next DC will come from GB. I think it will be W Moss or D Perry.
Next DC is D Perry or W Moss. Print that!

  • http://atm Raider O

Perry learned a lot from D lebeau, and W Moss did a great job with the LBs at GB.

So if Moss comes from Green Bay will he bring Capers’ 3-4 or stay with 4-3.
