Who will be the new defensive coordinator?

Share

Been working on other assignments (a Hue Jackson piece will be forthcoming next week in print) as well as my weekly column, but will post as news or rumors merit.

As it stands, all the Raiders have confirmed is that John Marshall won’t return as defensive coordinator, something Al Davis conceded at the Jackson press conference. Marshall’s name has even been removed from the coaching roster at Raiders.com.

My understanding is that line coach Jim Michalczik and quarterbacks coach Paul Hackett also will not return, although their names are still listed.

The next major hire for the Raiders will be defensive coordinator, and there aren’t a wealth of names bubbling to the surface. Chuck Pagano, a former Raiders assistant, wound up being promoted in Baltimore and essentially mocked Oakland as even being an option, saying he’d already served a “two-year sentence” in 2005-06. He and Jackson were said to have a good relationship.

Big names such as Jim Mora and Eric Mangini aren’t an option based on their pay scale as well as their aspirations to be a head coach again, which is the last thing Jackson needs in Year 1.

Jay Glazer of Fox Sports had an interesting Tweet a few days back saying it was his believe the Raiders were looking for a coordinator to implement an aggressive 3-4 scheme similar to the one Rex Ryan has with the New York Jets.

It becomes more if a possibility when it moves from the Tweet stage into an actual story. The Raiders have run the 3-4 in their past, but not since they’ve been back in Oakland. And although it’s true middle linebacker Rolando McClain excelled in a 3-4 at Alabama, Kamerion Wimbley was a 3-4 outside linebacker at Cleveland Travis Goethel could make a nice inside companion for McClain in a 3-4, Oakland’s defensive line doesn’t set up that way.

Yes, Richard Seymour has done good things in a 3-4 in New England, provided he returns. Trevor Scott, after ACL surgery, could be an outside linebacker.

But the two most improved players on the Raiders defensive line were Tommy Kelly and Matt Shaughnessy, who combined for 14 sacks, and neither of them has played a lick of 3-4 and both are coming off breakout seasons.

Add to that the most talked-about assistant at the Jackson-Al Davis press conference was defensive line coach Mike Waufle _ a four-man line guy from way back _ and a 3-4 defense, while not impossible, seems at least unlikely.

The Raiders have rarely gone with a big name as their defensive coordinator. When they returned to Oakland it was John Fox, who was replaced by Fred Whittingham, who was replaced by Willie Shaw, who was replaced by Chuck Bresnahan, who was replaced by Rob Ryan, who was replaced by John Marshall.

At no point was there a big shakeup in philosophy. All espoused the philosophy of winning individual matchups with superior athletes and an abundance of man-to-man coverage, and all had a single-deep safety.

There was nothing in Davis’ performance during the Jackson press conference that leads me to believe he’s ready to shake things up philosophically.

The Raiders could promote from within with someone like Waufle or secondary coach Kevin Ross, although the former is an established line coach and the latter has never been a coordinator.

Call me a cynic (as many of you have, and with some degree of accuracy), but when I heard Titans defensive coordinator Chuck Cecil was let go after his defense dropped to the lower third of the league, was among the league leaders in penalties and had given a referee an obscene gesture, the first thing I thought was he could be headed to Oakland.

Other purely speculative candidates?

Green Bay has a pair of potential candidates in former Raiders staffers Winston Moss (inside linebackers) and Darren Perry (secondary). New York Jets defensive backs coach Dennis Thurman worked with Jackson on the staffs of USC (2000) and the Ravens (2008).

I like Green Bay and Pittsburgh Sunday, for what it’s worth, and that’s not much.

  • And, instead of “next week”, I should have said “in two weeks”. MB will call out anything to win an argument.

What makes Rodgers over-rated? He ISN’T one of the top 5 QBs in the league? Why not?

    Rodgers WORST season – 64% completion, 4,000 yards, 28 Tds, 13 Ints.

    Ok.

  • Just Fire Baby

    Shasta……..beautiful place.

I use to feel sorry for their football team when they played Butte.

We had Aaron Rodgers and Junior Saivii(played some NT with Dallas the last few years) one year and I think we won something like 70-0 one time against you guys.

  • djohnnyg

Is it really “official” yet that Saunders is our OC?

  • Mistabr0wn

    Just the facts…
I dont even have to twist others words to win like you do! 😀

Charles Woodson also ruined a pretty good corner in Phillip Buchannon. It was about the time Woodson started to turn gangster and led the young rookie down the same path. PB got carried away and let his mouth and poor play run himself out of town. He was trying to mimic Woodson in his attitude and it didn’t bode well for him. At one time when we had Napoleon Kaufman, I remember we had the BEST secondary period. Woodson and his ego pretty much dismantled on his own. Woodson is a great player now and hew was great in the beginning. In the middle of his career he pretty much gave up and quit in the Raiders. Go ahead and blame Al as most do about everything.

  • OAKlifer

Just seemed that once he started to have injuries he had no desire to play as a Raider********

Yes that sounds about right but man his great four year run should over shadow that. But as some one mentioned above it wasnt untill he went to GB he truly flourished…We play way to much man he is great zone and bliting and ball hawking his stats balloned and he looked great. Didnt mean to get defensive but c.wood was one of my fav’s I still remember the “pose” at Mich after that TD Damnn he is good!

  • Just Fire Baby

    WOW!!!!!

    Packers are 1.5 point favorites.

That is crazy to me. I’m going to pound the Steelers.

Wonder if that line is factoring in Pouncey not playing.

  • alex7

Media has to sell advertisements. Doesn’t make Rodgers over-rated. If they were saying he was the best ever, then ok.

But for a 4th year guy, he’s doing the things that Brady and Manning did early in their careers – winning games, getting to the playoffs, now getting deep in the playoffs, doing it with sub-par running games and average D’s.

  • Raiders were 3 point favorites against Bucs in SB 37.

  • Al Davis Supreme

What does Pittsburgh have that I don’t have? Huh? The Raidahs are the team of the decades, not Pittsburgh. I wanna be like Pittsburgh. Go Packers.

  • Just Win Baby

4 teams played for the chance to go to the Superbowl today and Nnamdi Asomougha didn’t play for any of them. They all did it without him and so will we. One player doesn’t make a whole team. It isn’t the end of the world.

  • alex7

    Suicide,

didn’t PB go to U of Miami and show up to his FIRST NFL camp in some gaudy earrings and fur?

Not sure Woodson had much to do with PBuc’s attitude.

Also, PBuc similarly did better once he left Oakland and was placed in a better Tampa D scheme where he could do more.

  • Oh, ok, only if the media says Rodgers is the best ever, then they’re overrating him. I mean, as long as they just say he’s the best QB of the past 20 years…

Dude, you and them are drinking some serious kool aid on Rodgers. He’s not that good. The Steelers are going to pop his cherry.

  • bigblackdeath29

if mike tomlin wins a second superbowl he has to be in the top elite coaches in the league.

  • alex7

Well, the Jets did it with Revis. The Steelers with Troy. The Packers with Woodson and Tramon Williams. Bears did it with Urlacher.

You kinda need SOMEONE big-time on D.

Why get rid of your best?

I hate the Pittsburgh Steelers. So much for parity. I hope Dom Capers stops that horrible running back Mendenhall. The Jets were effing pathetic in the 1st half.

Rodgers waspretty much ignored most of the season, if there is any love now, its only because he dismantled falcons and Brady and sanchez is out..

    RMR,

I guess I would need to know how good you think Rodgers is.

I said up there top-5 in the NFL. What would make him worse than that?

    Brady, Manning, Ben, Brees, Rodgers.

Who else would you put up there? Rivers? Shaub

    Seems legit to me.

The Patriots QB shredded the Steelers.
Mark Sanchez, once the Jets realized 3 quarters late that you need to throw on the Steelers, passed well against Pittsburgh.

    Steeler weakness = pass D.

    Packers strength = passing.

No reason Steelers would shut down Rodgers.

How the rest of the game plays out is anyone’s guess. But to think Rodgers will struggle against the Steelers makes no sense.

  • Alex, you said the media would be overrating Rodgers if they said he was the best QB ever, as if them saying anything short of that is acceptable. Like, they can say he’s the best QB of the past 20 years, and it’s arguable. That’s the impression you give with that point.

    Suicide, exactly, it’s a game.

In Oakland between 2003 and 2009, the GAME was no fun.

What’s there to enjoy when your coaches are over-matched and your team is unprepared?

Motivation is a very real thing. Hard to be 100% motivated when you’re getting pounded, out-coached, and embarrassed. When your calls are being called by a guy who was running a bed-and-breakfast 8 months ago. When your D-coordinator isn’t allowed to run the D he wants.

Hard to get 100% motivation and effort week to week from humans in that environment. Money be danged.

    Alex7,

I believe that PB had somewhat of an attitude when we took him but he basically thought he was better than he actually was. That particular defense at the time got too cocky and let it go to their heads and blew it. That was about the time Woodson seemed to lose interest.

between the years 2003-2005 i saw woodson at night clubs drinking during the week and nights before games with several players.the attitude of the team got real bad after the superbowl lost.i give cable credit for the change in attitude but that`s about it.but woodson`s behavior opened my eyes on the sports world.that`s why jay cutler lost today to much drinking.

Raider fan always over rates the plodding talent and discounts starts that don’t appear to be “all-in”

Nnamdi is either #1 or #2 in the league and is recognized by opposing players and media as the best in the business.

But Raider fan thinks CJ and Routt or a green Walter McFadden will be able to just slide right in.

Just like Raider fan thought the run defense could get it done with guys like Warren, Sands and other no-names.

Most winning teams have some dominant players…not just average to below average players with a great attitude
