Huff got a vote, so he’s second-team All-Pro

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, January 24th, 2011 at 9:13 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Raiders free safety Michael Huff, scheduled for free agency whenever a labor agreement is reached, probably won’t be putting “second team, All-Pro, 2010” on his list of accomplishments.

Huff indeed got a single vote out of the panel of 50 to finish in a seven-way tie to be the second safety on the second team. The first team safeties were (surprise!) Troy Polamalu of Pittsburgh and Ed Reed of Baltimore. Green Bay’s Nick Harris finished behind Polamalu and Reed and was the first pick of the second team.

Other safeties that got one vote were Antrel Rolle (Giants), Eric Weddle (Chargers), Malcolm Jenkins (Saints), Quintin Mikell (Eagles), Chris Harris (Bears), Michael Griffin (Titans) and Darren Sharper (Saints).

(For what it’s worth, Sharper, after a magnificent season last year when the Saints won the Super Bowl, played in eight games, started one, had 16 tackles and one pass defensed. And got a vote. Compared to that, Huff looks like Larry Wilson.)

Huff got the same amount of All-Pro votes as Marcel Reece, who tied for sixth among fullbacks, and fewer votes than Sebastian Janikowski (four votes, third among place kickers) and Jacoby Ford (two votes, 3rd among kick returners).

Despite having gross and net yardage figures that were less than Cowboys’ punter Mat McBriar, Shane Lechler had 34 of 50 first place votes. Cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha was the leading vote-getter among cornerbacks, being named on 20 ballots.

The Raiders slipped the name of offensive coordinator Al Saunders into the coaching roster on Raiders.com without an announcement.

Still listed are line coach Jim Michalczik and quarterbacks coach Paul Hackett, although my understanding is neither will be back. Michalczik will return to Jeff Tedford’s staff at Cal. According to the Twitter account of David White of the Chronicle, wide receivers coach Sanjay Lal, running backs coach Kelly Skipper and tight ends coach Adam Henry were all with Hue Jackson’s contingent in Mobile, Ala., at the Senior Bowl, a pretty good indication they will be retained.

As long as we re-sign Bones Fassell, I am good.

Did a great job last year.

We win the ST touchdown battle, turnover battle, block punt battle, kickoff return average battle, and Shane made the Pro Bowl.

Job well done. He deserves a raise.

Wish Bones Fassel could have done something about the ensuing kickoff after DMAC’s big run tied the Jax’ville game.

    Dbaz,

great point. Huff plays a safety position as hard as any in all of the NFL, so props for him for doing that in a solid manner.

And yeah, if you put him in a more standard defense where he wasn’t playing CF solo, he’d have a smaller area to wreak havoc in.

If Bush walks, sign Willis McGahee and/or draft a late-round back.

If Huff walks, sign Jarrad Page to compete with Stevie Brown.

Hey, if you want to take everything the media says about the Raiders at face value go for it sucker (language too harsh?). But as a Raider fan you should know better. Hey, didn’t the media just report that Cable was fined for missed OTAs? Still believe that report too?

And if you think it is a given that the Raiders HC gets to make the decisions about which assistants are kept, and who is let go, keep on thinking that….lmao. Too funny.

Yes, Al Saunders is officiall listed as Raiders’ offensive coordinator on the Raiders’ official website.

Just saw it a few hours ago, I’ve been checking last few days, today was the first time I noticed it.

Dakota, the big bad media usually reports when Al interviews, hires/lets go of assistants. For them to report that Hue kept those 3, just roll with it.

Hue kept Lal is what’s reported. If you claim that’s an Al move, Al doesn’t extend bad assistants beyond their original contracts. Lal probably knows what he’s doing, and needs some talent to work with.

Really? Wasn’t Rob Ryan here for 5 seasons?

  28. alex7 Says:

    The News,

almost no safety in the middle of the field can tackle a RB who breaks loose and is one-on-one.

The great, late Eric Turner was absolutely destroyed by some no-name Bills RB on a breakaway once. SHOULD happen to any safety, when the RB has all the momentum and field to decide how to use it.

Did you not like his absolute destroying of Dwayne Bowe?

  29. RaiderRetribution Says:

NFL owners will get at least a 3% change in profits in their favor or at least 50-50 split,

    in exchange

players will get another year closer to UFA,
Franchised players will get a 2 year contract instead of just one, at top 3 salary instead of top 5.

    Rookie pay scale, vets want the difference to go to them, owners want to keep the savings for themselves;

this will be a 60-40 split in favor of the players

    there will 18 games with two bye weeks;
    therefore only two preseason games
no third for HOF or overseas games- they will still have them, but will count as one of two

18 game season will mean active roster increased to 50 instead of 45 + 1 third string qb
    and a 56 man roster
[Gruden will be happy as more teams will carry a fourth QB for development].

  30. RaiderRetribution Says:

also off season programs will be cut by a third, except QBs they will have to come in for full off-season workouts, game film/playbook study they are management afterall.

  31. alex7 Says:

Ryan was given a tiny two-year contract, Dakota. He wasn’t really given the opportunity to bring in his guys and run the 3-4, even though he tried. At the end of that two-year mess that was mostly Al’s fault, Ryan was given a 3-year deal.

Once it became obvious that Ryan couldn’t run the Davis system, he was let go. We didn’t know that after 2 years of being switched around between his 3-4 and Al’s 4-3.

    ——————
Technically it would be a fallacy if you assume that skipper, henry and lal would be retained just because they were at the senior bowl.

  33. PassTheCheetos Says:

However its probably true that theyd all be kept.

  34. alex7 Says:

    Good info RR. Source?

The only thing I can’t see happening is the 2 bye-weeks and 18 regular season games. Too many lost viewers with two-bye weeks, and possibly a tv mess.

  35. alex7 Says:

Pass, it was reported Hue kept them. Why are we fighting that?

It doesn’t say that it’s assumed they were kept BECAUSE they are at the senior bowl. Just says they were retained AND are at the senior bowl.

  36. Dakota Says:

I hope they don’t go to an 18 game schedule. Certainly need to lose one preseason game though.

A scaled rookie wage is a must, with the players getting to free agency quicker. That way at least duds like DHB and Russell are sniffed out over the first few years of their rookie deal and the good players get a fair wage to begin and the their first big free agent contract a little earlier.

  37. PassTheCheetos Says:

if they do indeed go to 18 games they need to drop the black out rule.

  38. PassTheCheetos Says:

Im not saying they werent retained or that the reports not true. What i am saying though using the phrase “a pretty good indication they will be retained” isnt the same as saying that they have been retained. Im arguing on reading comprehension skills is really what im doing.

  39. Dakota Says:

Imagine all the scholarship players and DBs Al could keep if the roster was expanded for an 18 game schedule!

  40. Dakota Says:

Decertification of the Union and then lawsuits by the players might be the only way to prevent a lockout in 2011. At least we would have football in 2011, and that might give the sides time to work out a deal.

  41. 1eyedpirate Says:

This was huffs best year! He is learning to position himself to make plays in coverage… He is an average tackler but he made plays this year and is living up to his first round draft status. I didn’t like him and thought he was a bust but over the last 2 years he has stepped his game up…. Took a while to develop like aso, so let’s try and keep him…. If we can get to the quarterback and pressure him guys like Huff can flourish…. Now as for our strong saftey, we need a guy who we can bring up in the box and stack the run… A guy who can diagnose the run and bring this defense to another level

  42. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Dakota, there’s more to it than just performance. It’s a business. Top draft picks sell jerseys, period. They also draw t.v. revenue. Even if they turn out to suck.

  43. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

In business terms, drawing attendance and selling jerseys IS performance, just so much as playing. When the owners stop profiting off of players’ images, then they should only have to pay their players based on game performance.

Arent jerseys and merchandise revenue split among the owners? For some reason i think thats the case.

  49. priesttj Says:

IMO Huff has demonstrated that he might ne the smartest DB we have his timing on plays the last 2 years has taken a 180 degree turn He used to be extremely cautious now he just reacts and makes big plays. The difference IMO is film study and watching his counterparts like Palomalu and Reed. He now sees things before they happen. His instincts have always been good he just would, for gthe lack of a better phrase “cut it loose” he would hesitate to make sure and when you do that it’s too late.

Huff IMO is definitely in the top 5 safties in the game. THe steps he’s taken show up on gameday. I think Tyvon Branch has that same ability maybe even more. Branch has almost Ronnie Lott potential he just doesn’t watch film enough and his instincts tend to suffer as a result. But He is a bigtime hitter under that inconsistent lost occasionally exterior. He has to get with Huff and Nnamdi and spend a lot more time in film study. The same is true with MM34 they both need to learn the QB’s in this league as well as they can and the tendencies of their offenses that takes time but both players have unlimited potential given they dedicate themselves to the game as Huff has done.

  50. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Cheeto, how should that change my point? The player still brings that revenue. The more his merch sales, the more the owner/owners make, whether it’s one, or all of them.

Joe Cullen to interview for Raiders DC job “in the coming weeks”

    -Jason La Canfora (twitter)

  64. SilverNBlackPA Says:

    Joe Cullen’s bio from Jaguars.com:

Joe Cullen was named defensive line coach for the Jaguars in February. Cullen, 42, has 20 years of coaching experience including 17 on the collegiate level.

Cullen previously served as defensive line coach at Idaho State in 2009. He spent three seasons (2006-08) with the Detroit Lions as defensive line coach. Under his direction, the Lions finished 10th in the NFL in 2008 in sacks per pass attempt and finished in the top 10 for the second straight season in sacks. Rookie defensive end Cliff Avril led all first-year players in sacks with six and in forced fumbles with four.

In 2007, the defensive line improved from 24th to ninth in the NFL in sacks as the unit registered 28.5 sacks, seventh in the league. Three different linemen had career-highs in sacks. Cullen instituted the “Joe Cullen Big Man Camp” for linemen in the Detroit inner-city area.

Prior to joining the Lions, Cullen spent 16 seasons on the collegiate level as an assistant coach. He was part of Ron Zook’s first staff at Illinois in 2005 as a defensive assistant. He was on the Indiana staff for three seasons from 2002-04 including the last season as defensive coordinator in which the Hoosiers knocked off two ranked teams in the same season for the first time in 16 years. He spent the 2001 season at Memphis as defensive line coach.

Cullen spent eight seasons (1992-98, 2000) at Richmond including three as defensive coordinator. He was promoted from defensive line coach to defensive coordinator in 1997 and spent two seasons leading the unit. Following a year at LSU, he returned to Richmond to lead the defense in 2000. As defensive coordinator, the Spiders led the Atlantic 10 in total defense in all three seasons. In 2000, the unit ranked fourth nationally in rushing defense and 14th in scoring defense despite playing the nation’s toughest schedule.

In 1998, the club finished 9-2 and won the Atlantic 10 title and advanced to the NCAA playoffs. He left in 2000 to coach the defensive line at LSU but returned in 2000 to help lead the Spiders to a 10-3 record and an appearance in the NCAA quarterfinals.

Cullen played nose guard at the University of Massachusetts from 1986-89, earning All-Yankee Conference honors three times. He later began his coaching career overseeing the defensive line at his alma mater from 1990-91. He earned his bachelor’s degree in sports management and has earned credits toward a master’s degree at both Illinois and Richmond.

    COACHING BACKGROUND

    Massachusetts 1990-91, Richmond 1992-98, 2000, Louisiana State 1999, Memphis 2001, Indiana 2002-04, Illinois 2005, Detroit Lions 2006-08, Idaho State 2009, Jacksonville Jaguars 2010″

    Haahahahahahahh, from 2006:

“The Detroit Lions have suspended defensive line coach Joe Cullen for Sunday’s regular-season opener against Seattle because of his two recent arrests, NFL sources told the Free Press Thursday.

    …..

Cullen was arrested and charged with indecent and obscene conduct Aug. 24, the night before the Lions’ third exhibition at Oakland. A worker at a Dearborn fast-food drive-thru window saw him naked behind the wheel of his SUV and called the police, according to police reports.

Then Cullen was arrested and charged with drunken driving Sept. 1, the night after the Lions’ exhibition finale against Buffalo. After he sped down a Dearborn street without his headlights on, someone called the police, and when the police found him, a breath test determined his blood-alcohol content was .12, over the legal limit, according to police reports. ”

Are there any free agents or draft picks that would help us?

    No.

Don’t think there’s a single QB coming out in the draft this year that’s ready to be a day 1 starter.

Vince Young is the best free agent. No thanks. Keep the headcases away!

Is Kellen Moore coming out this year that kid has the IT factor I think we will see a swing in production from big athletic guys Russell, Young types to more cerebral pocket passers who can sramble and toss a ball and make the right read on the drop of a dime like a Brees or Manning. I think Moore is NFL ready just by his approach work ethic and ability to make all the throws.

It’s complete nonsense that he still has a job. I have no idea what Al sees in the guy.

If MBush can’t be retained, I hope Al snaps up Dion Lewis out of Pitt. That kid is DYNAMITE and is flying under the radar right now.

  82. SilverNBlackPA Says:

Santonio Holmes was apparently very unhappy with the Jets’s gameplan in the AFC Championship game.

There’s a guy I wouldn’t mind Al opening up the checkbook for. HUGE boost to the offense with Holmes.

Holmes, Ford and even DHB would just be too much speed for defenses to handle.

  83. Just Fire Baby Says:

    Joe Cullen!!!

    HA!!!

I joked last week we should hire the guy who went through the drive-thru naked in Detroit as DC. I didn’t know his name or even look it up as it was purely a joke.

    I was only kidding Al!!!

  84. Just Fire Baby Says:

    Oak,

Kellen Moore is going back to school.

6 foot in cleets and 190 pounds dripping wet is the only reason, IMO.

He could complete 80% of his passes for 50 TD’s and 2 INT’s next year, and I still think he won’t go in the first 4 rounds, due to his measurables.

  85. SilverNBlackPA Says:

I still like the idea of Bob Babich out of Chicago. He’s been a co-ordinator before, runs the 4-3, and has coached a beastly linebacking corps in Chicago for a while now. This is a guy who helped Brian Urlacher develop; that’s exactly who I want helping RoMac.

I would prefer to kick the tires on another fringe NFL starter not named Gradkowski.

But the fact remains that Soup is not a long term solution at QB, and we need to have a guy who is at least good enough to push him in 2012.

Just like Cable this year, Campbell is on the last year of his contract in 2011.

I think he should get the Cable treatment as well. You are the unquestioned starter, and it’s playoffs and a new contract or no playoffs and walking papers.

    I agree.

Think Chase Daniel. All the stats and intangibles in the world, but went undrafted because of his size and offensive system.

Moore’s best bet is to follow Daniel’s path, sign as a UDFA and impress enough in camp to land a backup job.

Exactly! This is a guy who coached up Lance Briggs too.

It makes too much sense, so it’ll never happen. :-P

  93. Just Fire Baby Says:

My dream scenario would be to land Wiz 2.0 and Andy Dalton in the 2nd and 3rd rounds (I don’t think either will be available in the mid 3rd so it will probably remain a dream) and a DB in the 4th round.

Than let Al do his forty time fetish thing in the last few rounds.

Could we trade a player under contract to move up a few spots in the 3rd maybe? Trade Carlisle and JLH to move up 5 spots in the 3rd round maybe? Ah…probably not.

  94. LA to TheBay Says:

    Isn’t Higgins’ contract up?

  95. Just Fire Baby Says:

    Is it???

Well the end of an era than huh?

No more punt returns when he runs 30 yards, sideways for a -1 return.

  96. LA to TheBay Says:

That kid showed a lot of promise in 08. Oh well.

  97. LA to TheBay Says:

I think we will be looking for a C in the offseason, if we keep Gallery.

    Veldheer-Gallery-???-Campbell-Henderson/Walker

Don’t see us getting 4 new starters. Coop is definitely trade bait.

  98. SilverNBlackPA Says:

If there’s a year to not have a first round pick, this is it. Plenty of good targets to fill holes in the mid and late rounds, or maybe with a trade up to the late first/early 2nd to land some of the higher end ones.

Off the top of my head:

    Mike Pouncey, G, Florida
    Stefen Wisniewski, C/G, Penn State
    Kris O’Dowd, C, USC
    Curtis Brown, CB, Texas
    Brandon Burton, CB, Utah
    Jimmy Smith, CB, Colorado
Bruce Carter, OLB, North Carolina (could be this year’s MBush…crazy talented injured player taken in the 4th round or so)
    Greg Jones, OLB, Michigan State
    Jonathan Baldwin, WR, Pitt
    Leonard Hankerson, WR, Miami
    Terrence Toliver, WR, LSU
    Austin Pettis, WR, Boise State
    Jerrell Powe, DT, Ole Miss
    Ian Williams, DT, Notre Dame
    Sione Fua, DT, Stanford

Al’s got serious options. Landing several of that crew would make me wet myself

  99. Just Fire Baby Says:

While we are it, we can probably move on from Nick Miller as well.

He seemed to get worse on PR as the year went along. I would have liked to see him more as a WR than we did, but I’m fairly sure we aren’t missing out on a whole lot.

  100. Just Fire Baby Says:

Andy Dalton measured in at 6′2 even this week at the Senior Bowl, which should squelch some of the “too-short” critics.

Still not ideal size, but that is big enough.

  101. SilverNBlackPA Says:

There’s also some damn fine right tackle prospects that can be had from the 2nd round on that I’d rather see get a shot over Mario Henderson:

    DeMarcus Love, Arkansas
    Jason Pinkston, Pitt
    Joe Barksdale, LSU
    Darius Morris, Temple
    Marcus Gilbert, Florida
Marcus Cannon, TCU (good guard candidate too)

  102. Just Fire Baby Says:

I love the Senior Bowl and all the practice notes and such.

Going through the North practices, most disappointing players seems to be Titus Young. Got handled in all blocking drills and dropped a bunch of practices. Jake Locker looked inaccurate (shocking!!) and threw two picks in padless drills.

  104. Just Fire Baby Says:

I wanted to see if Wiz 2.0 played any Center in the Senior Bowl, but I don’t see his name on the roster.

    Did he opt out??

  105. RaiderRockstar Says:

Yes. JLH & Nmiller are both free agents

same thing with Gradkowski, Boller, Frye & O’Sullivan …

replacing depth doesn’t make you a playoff calibur football team

Is anybody seriously looking forward to a Campbell to DHB, Murphy, Ford & Schilens (for 3 games) show again?

That is what the passing game will look like. Hopefully we can re-sign Zach Miller & Marcel Reece or JCamp will be left without a security blanket!

  106. RaiderRockstar Says:

Trade Carlisle and JLH to move up 5 spots in the 3rd round maybe?

    ***

Cooper Carlisle is surely on the outs. The other guys available for trade that are under contract might be Groves & CJ37 (but I like both of them)

  107. Just Fire Baby Says:

On the other hand Michigan State linebacker Greg Jones not only is undersized, coming in at under 6 foot at today’s weigh-in. But he looked really stiff in coverage, is easy to separate from in any kind of space and simply doesn’t have the ability to turn and run with tight ends down the seam at the next level. He’s a tightly wound, tight-hipped kind of prospect who is limited to more of a two down guy only.

    ************************

This guy’s draft prospects continue to slip by the day.

  108. RaiderRockstar Says:

Trevor Scott & Chaz Schilens could be traded, but I doubt we’d get much in return!

  109. J Hill Says:

Hopefully we can re-sign Zach Miller & Marcel Reece or JCamp will be left without a security blanket!

Those 2 and Bush will be restricted FAs. Count on seeing those 3 in S&B next year.

  114. Just Fire Baby Says:

I’m thinking the top 4 FA’s we need to re-sign are Seymour, Nnamdi, Huff and Bush.

I think we will only land 3 of the 4. Seymour and Nnamdi will get less money per year, but more guaranteed over the life of a contract, and Huff and especially Bush will get pay raises.

Zack Miller has 4 years in. How is he an UFA?

  118. J Hill Says:

RFA means we can put a tender on them JFB.

Morrison was a restricted FA last year and got 3rd rd tender I believe. If a team would’ve signed him away from us, we would get their 3rd rd pick.

1st and 3rd for Routt. A team signing Routt woulda had to give us a 1st and 3rd rd pick.

  119. Just Fire Baby Says:

What numbers do you see Huff taking to come back?

  122. Just Fire Baby Says:

The thing about the Cutler debate that bugs me is nobody is looking at Pouncey in the same light.

Cutler had an MCL sprain and he gets raked over the coals for not going back in. Hell even Bruce Gradkowski took a shot at him saying he played WITH TWO MCL sprains in a meaningless game last year.

But Pouncey layed face first on the field for 5 minutes, hobbled off and was seen on crutches…..with a sprained ankle?? Where are all the O-lineman out there that have played in games with sprained ankles before in outrage??

    Huge double-standard.

    ***************************

I think Nnamdi will get similar numbers to Revis, and with some of the incentives like what Al put in. Other teams probably won’t like goose-eggs across the board for him, even if he isn’t thrown to much. I will say Nnamdi signs somewhere for 6 years $55million.

Huff probably the 3 year 17 million range
