Five coaches removed from roster
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, January 25th, 2011 at 2:03 pm in Oakland Raiders.
The following assistant coaches were removed from the Raiders’ coaching roster on the club Web site after being there earlier this morning:
Linebackers coach Mike Haluchak, quarterbacks coach Ted Tollner, quartebacks coach Paul Hackett, offensive line coach Jim Michalczik and assistant line coach Chris Morgan.
Al Saunders was added to the roster as offensive coordinator Monday.
Two names who have surfaced with regard to Oakland’s search for a defensive coordinator _ former Raiders defensive coordinator Chuck Bresnahan and Jacksonville defensive line coach Joe Cullen.
Bresnahan, most recently the defensive coordinator of the Florida Tuskers of the UFL, was was the Raiders defensive coordinator in the division title seasons from 2000 through 2002. He worked as Cincinnati defensive coordinator when Hue Jackson coached Bengals wide receivers. A source said Jackson has spoken with Bresnahan, although it’s not known how serious the level of interest is on either side.
According to the Twitter account of Jason LaCanfora of the NFL Network, “Joe Cullen to interview for Raiders DC job in the coming weeks.” Cullen has been a defensive line coach both in college and the NFL.
Note: Appears to be a rogue LaCanfora tweeter on the horizon. It crossed my Tweet deck this afternoon. My fault for picking it up somewhere other than his direct Twitter site.
Coaches who served under Tom Cable who are still listed include Greg Biekert (assistant coach on defense), Willie Brown (squad development), John Fassel (special teams coordinator), Adam Henry (tight ends), Sanjay Lal (wide receivers), Brad Roll (strength and conditioning), Kevin Ross (assistant coach), Kelly Skipper (running backs), Lionel Washington and Mike Waufle (defensive line).

They better get one he11 of a LBs coach, cause the focus seems to be on DBs and DL and, IMO, LB is the area that needs most improvement (just think the secondary needs to be more organized and communicate better).

I wonder who the new QB Coach will be?
I’m assuming the Passing Game Coordinator position will vanish, instead of hiring a guy to work with well respected OC Al Saunders
January 25th, 2011 at 2:16 pm
Wasn’t Lal brought in with Kiffin??
He is on his 3rd HC. He must go up and spin some real webs with Al about the greatness of the Raiders.

Perfect fit. No other NFL options. Now Davis can low-ball him. Ooooooh.

I swear Al Davis came up with “Passing Game Co-ordinator” title as a way to not call them OC or assistant OC and save some cash.

Conventional blog wisdom says that TV money pays for everything, and that Davis is not NFL poor.
Al Davis said himself last week, that the Raiders don’t have the resources of many other teams.
22,000 season ticket holders. He keeps trying to sell off chunks to investors.
He’s on his last legs in every sense of the word.

Dennis Thurman coached up Troy Polamalu at USC, Ed Reed in Baltimore & Darrelle Revis in New York
He was teammates with Ronnie Lott while at USC while Lott was an underclassmen. Lott credits Thurman for his development as a player in his Pro Football Hall of Fame speech who he credits as someone who “helped me become a better football player.”

Hey an old blast from the past. Sanjay Lal calls Al “Coach Davis” as well. No wonder he is still around.
Jerry hinted as they could hire another WR coach, and move Sanjay within the organization, but fact is, he is representing the Raiders right now in Mobile to the nation’s best collegiate players.
Sanjay for GM!!

Matt Williamson of Scouts Inc. thinks a 3-4 defense creates more options for a defense, and that Oakland could pull ot off well.
“They’ve been adding 3-4 guys the past two seasons, so it would make sense,” he said. “I think it would be beneficial.”
Up front, Williamson calls Seymour, who was a defensive tackle in Oakland in 2010, “the best 3-4 defensive end of this generation.” Lamarr Houston would be good at end and while Williamson acknowledges Kelly is not an ideal nose tackle, he said Kelly could get by there.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if Oakland drafted that classic 6-foot-2, 340-pound nose tackle,” Williamson said.
Also, breakout player Matt Shaughnessy would also be hurt by the change. The defenisve end is not a 3-4 player and Williamson admits “he would suffer the most by this move.”
At linebacker, inside man Rolando McClain played the 3-4 in college at Alabama, and outside man Kamerion Wimbley played it at Cleveland. Shaughnessy, Trevor Scott or Quentin Groves would be the other pass-rushing linebacker, with Travis Goethel the only current in-house candidate for the other inside spot.

I don’t think anyone in here knows anything about whether Sanjay Lal is a good wide receivers coach or not.
Fact: Almost no WR on the roster this year who played meaningful minutes had more than 1 year of NFL experience.
Fact: The year before that JaPurpledrank was our QB.
Fact: This year, we had Captain Checkdown at QB. He won’t throw downfield unless the WR is more than 10 yards in the clear, which doesn’t happen much in the NFL.

Sorry, it’s a dump.
One major advantage it has is accessibility, so they need to just build a new one right there.
If Al could figure something out and get a great stadium there, they could host college football games, maybe a bowl game, things along those lines and generally enter the 21st century.
Instead we all pissing in the same toilets in 2011, as our grandparents were in 1970.

The biggest surprise? Chad said he wants to stay in Cincinnati, a fact on which we’ve previously reported.

Broncos finish staff with former Texans coordinator
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal (PFT)
The 2010 Denver Broncos coaching staff is complete.
Following the hiring of Dennis Allen as the team’s defensive coordinator, the team announced Tuesday they’ve hired former Texans defensive coordinator Richard Smith as linebackers coach and former Rams/Panthers assistant coach Ron Milus to coach the secondary.
If we wanted to be cynical smartasses, we could point out that the Broncos coaching staff will now be an excellent mix of the two worst teams in 2010 (Panthers, Broncos) and the unstoppable Texans and Rams defenses from 2008.
But we’re not cynical.

What a joke of hire that would be….that would smell of an Al Davis hire and not a Hue hire….unless they couldn’t get anyone else better to replace Marshall.
January 25th, 2011 at 2:52 pm
Two other things that Jerry Mac and/or the blog consensus is wrong:
1: Mike Huff. I was saying it all year, Huff has really upped his game these last two seasons. I kept commenting that he was borderline Pro Bowl material this season. The main thing keeping him out is the fact that two first ballot Hall of Fame safeties are currently playing in the AFC. Whoever recognized him in the All Pro voting is obviously someone who pays attention. Jerry’s comparrison to Darren Sharper getting a vote is silly. Voting for Sharper is voting on reputation and shows the voter clearly hasn’t been paying attention. Huff doesn’t have that reputation yet and he’s even worse off because he has to overcome the underachiever label he picked up early in his career. So Huff is a guy you’d really have to be watching to throw an All Pro vote his way.
2. Jason Campbell is better than Gradkowski and Vince Young. Reality: VY > Grads > Campbell.

Hue was in Cincy with Breshnahan for a few years. There’s a legit connection. Winston Moss, who I think more fans would prefer would indicate a Davis hire even more since I don’t believe Hue and WM have any past connection.

Breshnehan inherited Willie Shaw’s defense. We were an offensive team anyway. The defense on Gruden’s team, while having some decent players, was exploitable at every level.

Mistic, I read an interesting article about Shaw, about how his defense is designed to disrupt the offense’s timing. He must be tough to work with, because it’s amazing he’s not in the league. He turned a non existent Raider defense to, what, a top 7 or so defense in one year?

The truth is the economy and the losing is why the fans aren’t coming. If you win they’ll come, but even if your losing and it’s a great place to be they’ll still come. But it cannot be a dump and you’re losing.
The firtyniners are selling out tickets but if you look in the stands they are empty. That place is half empty eveery game. How they stay on TV is mind boggling because all my friends and family who are stanch niner fans don’t go anymore. You can get a 50yardline great seat for $20 bucks their fans are keeping their season tickets but they no longer go to games. You can get a niner ticket just asking for it.
I think the fact that the Raiders don’t sell out and aren’t on TV helps the niners because the NFL doesn’t want both teams blacked out in this market.

‘Sup fellas.
Look on the bright side fellas. If Bresnahan does return at least we won’t have to put up with his color coded cards from the sideline. Because of innovations and rules changes the DC can send in a signal via headset.
Remember his god-awful cards? Reminded me of oversized Candy Land Cards. First down…Two Blue squares. 2nd down one red…and 3rd down…lose two turns stuck in Gumdrop Mountains.
Although, the guy was a good enough DC to coach on 3 div. winning Raider teams, and has familiarity with Hue from Cincy.
We’ll see.
January 25th, 2011 at 6:16 pm
I think the Raiders could do a whole lot worse than Bresnahan. It’s not like there’s going to be a new defensive scheme or anything.
January 25th, 2011 at 6:19 pm
I do remember the color cards. Man, Chuk was a sorry downgrade from Willi Shaw.

YA,
You been watching the Senior bowl practices on NFLN? Mayock was really talking up John Moffit from Wisconsin. Talked about what a nasty disposition he has.
Those damn Badgers do send some road graders into the NFL.
Whether Gallery stays or not, Oakland probably needs an infusion of young talent onto the OL.
The offensive line in general seems deep in this draft. Oughtta play right into Raiders’ hands.
January 25th, 2011 at 6:26 pm
“A lot of people say Gannon, Gruden, but when you think Charles Woodson, when you think Bill Romanowski, when you think Anthony Dorsett Jr., and some of the other great names on that team, you think of the man I’m about to introduce as new defensive coordinator of the Oakland Raidahs….”
January 25th, 2011 at 6:28 pm
I’ve been at work all day so I haven’t had a chance to see them, unfortunately. Moffitt would be a great pick for the Raiders, and could be plugged in at either OG spot or even center, all of which are positions of need. I hope the coaching staff gives him a long hard look.
Have to wonder if he’s going to end up being a 2nd round pick.
January 25th, 2011 at 6:33 pm
I still think the front runner is probably Winston Moss. Sounds like Al’s been interested in him for awhile. Now they have to wait til after the SB.
If it was Bresnahan or somebody off the Lions staff they could’ve already made the deal.
But, Hue has coached with Chuck before. So, who knows. Purely speculation.

RMR,
Yes Gruden’s teams were an offensive powerhouse. Gannon was a league MVP and I thought he shoulda won it in 2000. The Raiders were No. 1 rushing team partly because of his 550+ rushing yards. I don’t know why so many Raider fans have turned on Gannon. I don’t blame him solely for the SB loss. I don’t have a problem with his criticism of the organization.
I don’t know why you have such a problem with Bresnahan, though. He was a good enough coach to be DC on your idol Chucky’s staff. Yes?
His defense shut out the Dolphins in the 2000 playoffs. They held the Ravens to 16 points with 7 of those coming on a 96 yard fluke.
I believe he was the coach who called the blitz that sent Woodson crashing in on Brady that should’ve sealed that win, yes.
And his run defenses with Greg Biekert and Big John Parella at DT were a hell of a lot better than what we’ve seen since.
I’m not even saying I want to see Bresnahan back in Oakland. Just not sure why you’re so down on it. it’s a throwback to the Gruden era. Or doesn’t he look as cute in a little viser?

The Raiders are never going back to LA. They aren’t even in the top 3 teams that are being talked about. Its been a big topic of discussion down here as of late (I live in San Diego). It’s more than likely in 2013 you will see the powder blues playing in that new proposed stadium. Building a new stadium for them here is not going to happen and Spanos wants out of this town. He is also buds with the guy in charge of the LA project. It’s going to happen. Other teams that have been thrown around are the Jaguars and the Vikings.

The niners sellout games not because fans buy the tickets. The whiners sellout games because their corporate sponsors step in and buy remaining tickets so that they can have the team they advertise through to be shown on television. Its a simple difference of location, if the Raiders played in sf and sf played in oakland, the Raiders would get the better sponsors. This reason pisses me off more than anything every time I hear niners fans spout off about how they support their team so much more than us Raiders fans do.

Not to mention that fact that pretty much every major company in sf holds season tickets to niners games to hand out to clients/employees. This is also the biggest reason why the Giants were able to build the stadium they had, every company has season tickets. Same reason why the A’s and Raiders struggle to sell tickets.

During Bresnahan’s tenure, the Bengals ranked 28th, 30th, and 25th in yards allowed, out of 32 teams.
This doesn’t inspire confidence. However, we all no Cincy has no talent on the defensive side of the ball.
If I am not mistaken, Chuck was fired during the coaching purge of 2003 and was replaced by Rob Ryan.
Rob Ryan was brought in to install the 3-4 under Norv Turner.

I’m trying to forget that game!
January 25th, 2011 at 10:32 pm
Also, this year’s SB winner will be a drafted homegrown QB, as well.
January 25th, 2011 at 10:32 pm
I’ve accounted for Brad Johnson. Doesn’t go far to refute my point.
January 25th, 2011 at 10:35 pm
I’m not going to figure it out now, but the Super Bowls which featured drafted QBs versus undrafted QBs would probably go convincingly in the favor of drafted QBs.
January 25th, 2011 at 10:36 pm
Not to mention, all NFL games featuring drafted vs. non drafted QBs. Bet you it’s overwhelmingly in the drafted QB’s favor. Almost every statistic imaginable supports the theory that if a franchise QB is available in the draft, and you don’t already have a great QB, you take him, without question.
January 25th, 2011 at 10:40 pm
According to you:
Last 30 SBs winners:
19 drafted QBs
11 were not drafed by the teams they won with it.
January 25th, 2011 at 10:41 pm
Frave wasn’t drafted, Steve Young wasn’t drafted, Johnnie Untitas wasn’t drafted. Stabler drafted Plunkett not. Mark Ripien wasn’t drafted, Doug Williams wasn’t drafted, The diference is the darfted QB’s normally won several SB’s like Montana, Bradshaw, Brady and Elway. That’s true with Big Ben as well.
There are way too many examples where FA’s or traded QB’s came and won SB’s.
January 25th, 2011 at 10:43 pm
Last years qb wasn’t drafted Drew Brees
January 25th, 2011 at 10:46 pm
Raider O, your point being? Seems like you’re making my point. You have a much better chance of winning the Super Bowl with a drafted QB than an undrafted one. A 2/3 chance, per the numbers YOU just posted. Thanks for the support. I’ll never need to hire a stat boy with you around.

January 25th, 2011 at 10:53 pm
Statistics say that the Raiders would be better off taking the best QB available on the board and grooming him for the starting job in 3 years, or less, if necessary, than making Campbell the long term answer. No matter who that QB is or where he went to school.
January 25th, 2011 at 10:53 pm
Bottom line is teams RARELY dump good QBs. Very rare. If a QB is available for relatively cheap its usually because there is something very wrong with his game or he’s old.
That being said anything is possible in this league.
But the best way to get a true franchise QB and take advantage of his prime years for 8 to 10 years or more is to draft and develop him.
the Raiders have been downright awful developing QBs. And its this and the coaching turnover that has put the team in the hole.
Hopefully JC can be the guy.
I wouldn’t waste time with Palmer or VY. What’s the point in swapping out discarded QBs. At some point these receivers need to develop SOMETHING resembling timing with a QB
January 25th, 2011 at 10:57 pm
Reason:
Teams normally don’t trade great QBs, and they don’t let them become FAs.
January 25th, 2011 at 10:58 pm
I’d like you geniuses to name one team that’s great at drafting great QB’s at the most any of them have only had 2 over a 40 year period. Pitt 2, dallas 2 Niners 1, Raiders 1, great QB don’t grow on trees kiddies.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:00 pm
[...] The pair have already spoken according to the Oakland Tribune’s Jerry McDonald, but it’s unclear as to how serious the talks actually were. [...]
January 25th, 2011 at 11:04 pm
Being able to develop QB talent is definitely an advantage for teams that are good year in and year out. Like Pittsburgh.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:05 pm
priest, what team wins super bowls habitually with undrafted QBs (in recent memory)? I’m assuming by “great” you mean winning Super Bowls, btw.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:05 pm
Colts only had Manning, Unitas was a FA. Green Bay 1 Rodgers, Starr was trade and so was Farve. Rams 0, NY Giants 2, Minn 1, Saints 1 ManningSR,
They don’t grow on trees!
January 25th, 2011 at 11:07 pm
The only point I made regarding drafted vs. undrafted QBs is that you have a MUCH HIGHER chance of winning a SB with a drafted, homegrown QB, and I’ve backed that point up extensively, with some help from Raider O. LOL. Thanks again, ol pal.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:08 pm
Sorry Raider O I wasn’t demeaning you.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:08 pm
Priest, do NFL teams have a better chance of winning a Super Bowl with a QB acquired from another team, or a homegrown QB?
January 25th, 2011 at 11:08 pm
Unitas was a FA.
————————
So friggin what, he went undrafted. He was developed by Baltimore, as a undrafted FA
What’s your point?
January 25th, 2011 at 11:10 pm
Priesttj,
No they don’t grow on trees. But if you want a team that can stay on top for 10 years or more….usually you will need a QB that is in his prime for 10 years.
Teams like the Vikings, Raiders, Cardinals were given a temporary reprieve from plodding with free agent pickups only to plunge back into the depths of terrible once the past the prime former QB star expired after 2 seasons.
Again, anything is possible. But the best way is to draft and develop your own QBs.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:11 pm
Kell, his point is that drafting QBs is stupid and doesn’t work, and it was refuted before he even entered the conversation.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:12 pm
SnB, just point to the stats. Much better chance of winning a SB with a drafted, homegrown QB than with one acquired otherwise.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:16 pm
You increase your chances of getting Super Bowl titles by having longer stretches of winning competitive football.
Problem with the vikings, raiders and cardinals is that they were only able to muster 1 or 2 years of winning competitive football.
A good QB for several years is a prerequisite for having a long-term competitive team.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:16 pm
“We’re not losers anymore
January 25th, 2011 at 11:19 pm
That is beside my point, SnB. My point is that a team has a much better, read, much better chance of winning a Super Bowl with a drafted, homegrown QB than with an undrafted QB, either traded for, or acquired as FA or walk on. FACT. Indisputable.
January 25th, 2011 at 11:22 pm
BHP,
It’s all good bro.
My point is simple:
More teams won SBs with QBs they drafted because good QBs (normally) don’t get trader or let go (become FAs).
Very Simple!
January 25th, 2011 at 11:39 pm
I agree Raider O very simple…but anyway you can get ‘em get ‘em. Rams never turned down the SB’s because Theirs ws tarded for. Roman Gabriel was drafted by the Raiders and he was awesome.

What trading chips do we have to move up??
What players under contract do we have that we want to get rid of, and would be desirable to teams?
To move up 20 spots from mid 2nd to late 1st, will cost us at least a 3rd round pick, and we already don’t have a 4th next year.
Not worth it, IMO, to give away a player (potential draftee) just to move up into the late first.
Plenty of solid O-line and D-line players to be had in the 3rd and 4th rounds anyways.

Casey Matthews is awfully small for an ILB.
I think teams will pass on him for a few rounds, because not many teams are looking for a 230 pound ILB.
He is worth the “risk” in the mid rounds, but I would be suprised if he was drafted in the first 3 rounds.

I’m ready for Ocho. A change of scenary for him is needed, and there is no doubt in my mind he would improve our team for a few years.

January 26th, 2011 at 7:02 am
The little I know about the Senior Bowl players the Raiders are looking at…
Allen Bailey: Projects as 3-4 end best. Weighed in at 278, so he would be a LDE in a 4-3. Would probably need to trade up to get him. If Seymour bails and they move Houston to 3-technique, Bailey could be a good replacement at end. Tough guy, good motor, stout against the run.
Roy Helu Jr: Don’t know much, except that he’s 6 foot, 220 and is a physical runner. Possible MBush replacement.
Casey Matthews: Plays inside at Oregon, probably too light to play to the position in the NFL. Have to think the Raiders are looking at him for the weakside. Had 6 passes defensed and 3 interceptions, so he seems like he could handle the coverage duties.
