Hue at the Senior Bowl

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, January 26th, 2011 at 7:05 am in Oakland Raiders.

Hue Jackson has surfaced a couple of times for interviews while in Mobile, Ala., for the Senior Bowl.

Jackson told Bengals.com he planned on reaching out to the fan base in Oakland and although he couldn’t comment directly on any interest in wide receiver Chad Johnson, said of him, “He’s my son.”

CSN Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco caught up with Jackson before Senior Bowl practice for a one-on-one interview during which time Jackson broke no new ground in terms of staffing.

The little I know about the Senior Bowl players the Raiders are looking at…

Allen Bailey: Projects as 3-4 end best. Weighed in at 278, so he would be a LDE in a 4-3. Would probably need to trade up to get him. If Seymour bails and they move Houston to 3-technique, Bailey could be a good replacement at end. Tough guy, good motor, stout against the run.

Roy Helu Jr: Don’t know much, except that he’s 6 foot, 220 and is a physical runner. Possible MBush replacement.

Casey Matthews: Plays inside at Oregon, probably too light to play to the position in the NFL. Have to think the Raiders are looking at him for the weakside. Had 6 passes defensed and 3 interceptions, so he seems like he could handle the coverage duties.

I’m ready for Ocho. A change of scenary for him is needed, and there is no doubt in my mind he would improve our team for a few years.

Things might end with Chad crashing and burning, but I would give Cincy next years 3rd rounder for him if we had to.

    ++++++++++++++++

I’m with you. I hadn’t liked the idea before, but eff it…bring in Ocho. Give Campbell at least one other legit target besides Jacoby. I have to think HueJax could handle him if anyone could.

I wouldn’t give up more than a 4th rounder, though. Hell, Santonio Holmes is twice the receiver at this point and he only brought a 5th.

Speaking of Holmes, he’s a free agent…..though the Jets will probably franchise him.

  3. raiderzmaverick Says:

We don’t need a 3-4 end. We have a couple people who could play that position (although only one of them ever has). What we need would be a 3-4 NT if we were going to switch to it. I don’t like the idea as I feel it’s wasting a lot of talent (our 4 d-linemen are probably our strong point at this time on our defense as a unit).

Especially a guy like Ochocinco/Johnson since he’s never been hesitant about letting his QB hear it when he’s not getting him the ball.

Chad would work.Would improve other WR’s and especially Miller.Other teams would have to repect the passing game helping Dmac and the running game.Win,win move. All depends on the cost of bringing Chad to Oakland.

That DE from Cal that Mayock briefly highlighted on NFL Network last night jumped off the screen to me in those drills. Normally, I wouldn’t put much stock in a snippet like that and none of the other players featured did much for me. But that Cal dude looked extremely long, quick and powerful.

You guys should know out there. Is he the real deal?

Not our biggest position of need, but I was real impressed with what little I saw. And I feel like this may be a year to just go best player available across the board.

  47. DMAC Says:

    Chris,
    The kid can definitely play.

  48. Chris in NY Says:

I used to like 85 alot but he’s just become an annoying clown who’s not half as funny as he thinks. Plus I think his play is starting to slip.

I could live with bringing him in and maybe get a little excited about it, but I wouldn’t be disappointed if we don’t.

  49. DMAC Says:

    85>Ford
    85>Murph
    85>Chaz
    85>DHB

Bring him on. Even at this stage of his career, he’s better than what we have now.

  50. RaiderRockstar Says:

bringing in disgruntled players to turn around a dysfunctional franchise seldom pans out …

Besides, he said he wants to stay in Cincy and he’s under contract for $6 million in 2011

Lets re-visit this next offseason if none of the youngsters elevate their game (Heyward-Bey, Murphy, Ford, etc)

  51. Davy Jones Says:

Agreed. Hopefully he’d be a team player for his “father” and not make waves.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++

Cameron Jordan….he’s apparently dominated every drill he’s participated in. Long, quick and powerful is a good way to describe him. Some 3-4 team will snap him up. He’s played most of his college career as a 3-4 DE.

  53. Chris in NY Says:

    DMAC,
Maybe. I’ll tell you one thing, I wouldn’t trade Ford or Murphy for him at this point in all their careers. And I’d love Chaz if he could stay healthy.

Not opposed to bringing in a veteran receiver, but I don’t think it’s imperative either. Some good ones in the draft, too. I like both kids from Boise State.

If we’re going to make a splash in free agency, I’m more interested in the QB position. Vince Young is mighty intriguing to me. No, he’s not a great passer, but he’s OK. Which might be more than you’d say for Campbell, since he’s Captain Checkdown most of the time. Uses the TE well. Isn’t afraid to make some throws downfield. A consistent winner. Could break off some HUGE runs when our speedy WRs go deep and the secondary goes with them. How many times did Campbell run for 15 yards in scrambling plays this year before there was even a defender on the screen? If VY gets that kind of head of steam he’s taking some of those to the house.

  54. RaiderRockstar Says:

    Chris in NY,

Al Davis made it clear that he considers Campbell the unquestioned starter of the Raiders heading into 2011. Cross quarterback off Oakland’s offseason shopping list.

  56. Chris in NY Says:

I remember that and being disappointed. Then someone made the comment that Davis left the door open slightly there because he supposedly said “Right now, Jason Campbell is …”.

Plus, if he wants VY, and he supposedly loved him coming out of college and we all know Al’s love of high first-round draft picks, he’s not going to want to show his hand at this point in time.

I agree. Campbell is likely to be our opening day starter — if there is an opening day in 2011 — but I won’t feel real excited if that’s the case. I think it would mean that if we are to contend it’ll be with the QB simply along for the ride rather than leading the charge, much like it was in just about all our wins with Campbell this season.

I thought teams could only deny permission to interview for the same position but not if it would entail a promotion?

  64. r8eray Says:

Jets refused to let Dennis Thurman visit Raiders for DC job. I will assume Dennis has some hot feet!

  65. YoungAmerican Says:

If I’m not mistaken, the Raiders can still interview him if it’s for a promotion, but generally it’s a common courtesy offered to the team to ask permission.

  66. BART Bridge Blues Says:

I’ll bet the interview was for secondary coach, not the DC. This is what I was thinking awhile back when some ESPN doof said that the Raiders wanted an attacking 34 defense like the Jets. I think rather than wanting the Jets-style 34 line, Al wants to utilize the Jets style of coverage, which gets the most out of a guy like Revis, which I am sure intrigues Al, who has Nnmadi Asomugha, but can’t get any turnovers out of him.

  67. RaiderRockstar Says:

is Winston Moss under contract next season?

If so, the Packers could deny us as well!

  68. Dakota Says:

Damn, accordning to this it doesn’t matter if the move is a promotion from one assistant job to another assistant job, the team holding the contract can deny the other team. Bummer. Hope GB relents this time.

    Promotions:
•The NFL does not differentiate between levels of assistant coaches in its rules regarding their availability to interview with other teams. Whether the coach is a defensive line coach or an offensive coordinator, the rules are the same. If a team wishes to interview an assistant coach who is still under contract with another team for its head coaching position, the current team is required to give permission for the interview as long as it happens between the end of the team’s season and March 1. After March 1, teams can still ask, but the current team is not obligated to give permission.
    Lateral Move
•An NFL team cannot interview an assistant coach who is under contract as an assistant with another team for the following season without the permission of his current organization. Teams will usually give permission upon request, particularly if a lower level coach is set to take an offensive or defensive coordinator position elsewhere, but the current team is not required to give permission.

I don’t think there is any league rule against a club denying another onr permission to interview one of their employees under contract.

It’s just not done very often. It’s probably frowned upon in the coaching fraternity for an org. to deny one of their employees an opportunity for career advancement.

Kinda shady of the Jets, IMO.

  73. RaiderRockstar Says:

    Hope GB relents this time

    ***

that depends on what they think of Kevin Greene

Right now he coaches OLB’s and Moss coaches ILB’s.

If they feel Greene can handle both, i’m sure they’d let Winston walk for the promotion and save some coin

  75. RaiderRockstar Says:

I don’t think Al Davis would ask permission unless he was obligated to … he cares more about getting what he wants than doing something out of courtesy

  76. BART Bridge Blues Says:

OK, forget the part I said about the interview being for the secondary coach position. Dakota and RRS shut me up with their “facts”

But I don’t relent on the second part of my statement, that Al wants the kind of secondary that Baltimore and the Jets are running, while keeping his 4-3 line.

Sounds like we may be able to interview Thurman after March 1st (or 4th). I am sure Al can wait that long.

  77. Dakota Says:

Basically if the Jets or GB (or any other NFL team) wants to be total azzholes, they can deny their assistants interviews unless the interview is for the HC position. That is why Baltimore came out and said they “let” Al Saunders interview because they didn’t want to stand in his way. They could have said no. GB can say no about Moss or the other guy.

That really sucks for those coaches.

  78. Raider O Says:

    Damn the Jets!!

    Don’t hire the drunk nudest!

  79. BART Bridge Blues Says:

When was the last time any team asked for Al’s permission to interview someone on our staff? Seems like all of our coaches leave the organization via the “fired with cause” route…

  80. Dakota Says:

I have read other sources that claimed any promotion would prevent the team from denying permission to assistants for interviewing with other teams, but I guess the fact that it happens shows that those sources were wrong.

  81. buckeyeraider Says:

    Dakota,

It does suck for those coaches. Which is why I think it’s done so infrequently. It stands in the way of somebody’s career advancement.

Obviously Coordinator is a much more high profile position, than an anonymous DB coach.

Say, hypothetically Thurmond came to Oakland as a new DC. Their young talent jelled and he did a good job and moved their ranking from 28 to a top 10 defense.

Well, then in another year or two he might be a hot commodity for a HC position. Get his name out there.

Its not like the Raiders are going to bring in some big time DC that bring in innovation and diversity to the playcalling, formations and use of players.

The only way the Raider defense gets better is getting another big-time shutdown CB to play opposite Nnamdi.

Otherwise, its more of the same….oh and if they lose Nnamdi, forget it. 31st ranked defense here we come

Why is Tennessee getting rid of VY?

SEriously, Raider fans look at things with rose colored glasses

AS far as DC. The Raiders just need a coach that understands the 4-3. That’s all

I heard Allen Bailey tore a meniscus at the Senior Bowl, could possibly lower his draft stock. I think the Raiders should pursue this guy, another DE that is big enough to play in a 3-4 or 4-3, which seems to be what Waufle likes. He is a bit raw, but I have no doubts that Waufle can coach him up. With Houston and Shaugnessy holding down the starting spots at DE it doesnt seem like a position of need, but another big body who can rotate into the inside or outside of the D-line would be huge, considering our weak depth at the position. Still need a nose though, big time.

You did not like the Big Nickel?

I like when they brought in Mitchell for Groves, Wimbley slides down to DE, but would rather see another CB than Howard. I liked the safety blitz, other than Colts game, cannot fool Manning.

The literal play calls have been our weakness.. The system works when given the right players. Last year was an example…

How many times did Marshall call the damn zone and we get burned by it..
