Jackson’s leadership skills on display at early age

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, January 26th, 2011 at 10:00 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The leadership skills of Raiders coach Hue Jackson, according to a former Pop Warner football teammate, were on display when he was 8 years old.

Craig Austin’s reflections on Jackson, as well as others from his years as a youth and teenager in South Central Los Angeles, paint a portrait of someone who was born to be a coach and never wavered from his goal even while growing up in difficult surroundings in South Central Los Angeles.

A Jackson profile as seen through his Los Angeles years runs in today’s Bay Area News Group papers.

A couple of other posts worth noting:

– Offensive coordinator Al Saunders is thrilled to be with the Raiders, according to the National Football Post (by Baltimore Ravens beat writer Aaron Wilson).

Take note of this one, because when Jackson was hired as offensive coordinator last year, he immediately gave a couple of interviews to Baltimore-area publications and then was forbidden to use the spoken word with the media until a few weeks into training camp.

– CSN-Bay Area’s Paul Gutierrez drew the tough duty of covering the Pro Bowl in Honolulu, where he caught up with Nnamdi Asomugha, who said all the right things about his impending free agency and the possibility of returning to the Raiders.

Gutierrez talked with Asomugha at a hotel swimming pool. He may have to get Lechler on the golf course.

Okay. After reading most of the posts the last few days this is what I surmise thus far:

    Our QB sucks
-The win at Denver was because we just got ‘em at their low point
-The win at home over SD was lucky
-The win over KC at home was lucky too
-The loss against Pittsburgh was the “real” Raiders
-The loss against Miami was again the “real” Raiders as well as the loss against Jacksonville.
-The win on the road against SD was a fluke. They underestimated us. It was more SD beating themselves than anything else.
-The last game against KC was meaningless
-Al Davis is the biggest jerk in sports
-The Oakland Coliseum is a cesspool
-No players or coaches want to come here…EVER
    -Raiders are still a laughingstock
-Pittsburgh Steelers are a “class” organization and Raiders are garbage
-Raiders are gonna suck next year for sure. Be lucky to win 7 games, if that
-All our current players don’t wanna be here. Just wait and see

Is that about right? I know I missed a lot of items but this is just a brief summary of what I’ve gleaned from the fellow fans.

pretty much disagree with all of that except that we caught denver at their lowest point. we were clearly the superior team both times and it wasnt close. The first SD win was a bit lucky, but at the same time you make your own luck when you get 12 points off blocked punts to begin the game. Pittsburgh was an inexcusable beatdown and an example of how far the team still has to go against teams that can match or defeat their level of physicality. but i disagree about kansas city and miami. hue got away from the run against miami and tried to make a point with gradkowski at qb and it failed. gradkowksi played awful and that would have been a different game with campbell, grads made several costly throws that campbell never would have even tried. plus nnamdi was beat up and kansas city was a joke, they only got the division cuz they played buffalo instead of pittsburgh and the fg in zona. SD the second time could not have underestimated us, they were pissed to have lost to us the first time and were exposed as the soft finesse team that they are. the second KC game was once again not a fluke because we utterly dominated the line of scrimmage, and that equals a win almost every time. any way you look at it this team was much better than any of the last 7, those teams were so awful they would have gone 6-10 even with a schedule like this. we were unfortunate to have gone 8-8, not lucky.

This perception drives me around the bend. Certainly the Steelers are a better run and managed organization than the Raiders, but “class”?

Let’s compare the relative fates of Mike Webster and Jim Otto shall we? One organization has done all it could for the well-being of a crippled warrior and the other abandoned one to live in his car and die a physical catastrophe.

You may have heard of a guy named Mike Tomlin

  32. Just Fire Baby Says:

Reading these Senior Bowl practice notes from various writers really shows how the draft is a crapshoot.

One guy wrote that Dalton wasn’t impressive and not sure what the hype was about. Another guy said he is the best pro prospect QB to play in the Senior Bowl in years.

One guy says Austin Pettis looks great, and compares him to Marques Coltson. Another says he cant’ get open or find seperation.

Same with Titus Young. On one hand he is a speed burner who is very fluid in and out of his breaks. Another guy said he had the worst first day of practice of anyone there.

Maddening!!!! Can’t wait for the game.

    Hwnrdr,

Yep, word around the campfire hereabouts was/is that Tomlin was never originally intended as a serious candidate (although the Rooneys deny it) and was just being interviewed to satisfy the Rooney(heh) Rule but he just completely blew them away in the interview.

    ————————————————————————————————————–

I was telling this very same thing to a cat yesterday. DB coaches become good DCs and HCs because they have to understand ALL 3 aspects of the defense. They see everything in front of them. DL has no one in front of them. LB has DL in front of them. DB has the whole deal.

Dungy was a DB coach. Raheem Morris was. Herm Edwards was. You guys mentioned Tomlin. Nick Saban was a DB coach. The list goes on.

Not to toot my horn, but I called this the week before the Championship games. I said Al Davis will hire the DB coach from the Jets, Steelers, Ravens, Bears, or Jets.

That Ravens coach who became the DC recently and dogged us in media was a DB coach. He was a target.

Sean Payton told Williams no. “Give him a chance. He needs some help but he’s going to be a good one.” Now One year later he’s running Philly’s Defense for Andy Reid. I can’t see a up & coming guy like Perry accepting a job in Oakland to run a 4-3 with natural 4 man pressure and man2man corners. John Marshall was allowed to mix it up the past 2 years. I think DP could bring some excitement on Defense and help lure guys like Asomugha, Routt & Huff back in …

Raiders coach Jackson says Al Davis not meddling

    9 hours ago by FOXSports

When it comes to the Oakland Raiders and team owner Al Davis, new head coach Hue Jackson claims public perception is not reality.

During an interview with me and co-host Jim Miller on Sirius NFL Radio, Jackson said that Davis isn’t the micromanaging overlord he is often painted as being.

“Everybody always says that everything is done by (Davis),” Jackson said Wednesday between Senior Bowl practices. “That’s not true. I’m hiring this (coaching) staff. He made me the head coach of this team and said, ‘Hue, let’s go.’

“Obviously, I bounce everything off of him. Why wouldn’t I? This is his team. But he doesn’t sit there and rule everything with an iron-clad fist.

  60. RaiderRockstar Says:

    Part Two

The guy runs a draft as well as anyone I’ve ever seen. This guy knows football. To not use him as a resource would not be very smart on my part.”

“I know you hear all the different stories about the Raiders, but none of those things are true. Coach Davis has done a great job of creating an environment for the players and coaches to be successful. That’s what we’re looking to do.”

    -Alex Marvez

and the writing is actual journalism.

I wondered during the past offseason if there are any real journalists remaining. Bay Area reporters just sat around whining that Hue Jack was unavailable for interviews. Well, pick up the phone and call him yourself, or as in this article, call people who know him to get a story rather than just sitting in front of a computer waiting for someone to do your job for you.

    good morning

  64. Mistic1 Tha Supavillain Says:

Hue Jackson is from the hood! This is why I have dubbed him Hu-Jack City. This fact plus his football knowledge, & production buys him instant cred with most players in the NFL. He is the kind of cat that could handle a moss, ocho, or v-jax. He is not one of these stuffy button down square a$$ lames that can’t relate to the players.

Hu- Jack & coach Davis are on fire right now! I can’t wait to see what happens durring the offseason. I havnt been this excited since plunk was under center.

Hands down the best hire since Flores ( speculation at this point), at the very least since gruden. Welcome to Hu Jack City!

I knew cable was a weasel & a loser that couldn’t be trusted. His outrageous flip flop job with qbs would make acrobats from Barnum & Bailey take notice.

What’s going to happen on defense? No one knows. 3-4 , 4-3? Moss & Perry have coached both. Both have worked with capers , Perry with labeau too! Maybe we have a multiple front.

Hu Jack & the draft with uncle Al is going to be awesome big mean power blocker, at least one.

JC with Saunders & Hu Jack will finally have a chance to settle into and master a system. I think he will surprise a lot of you this year & will play in a probowl before he’s done here.

McFadden is the best back since Napoleon Kaufman.

  74. Mistic1 Tha Supavillain Says:

We need area 21 back. I learned a huge lesson with c. Woodson. I grew up watching the judge Lester Hayes & mike haynes. They were the best duo I have ever seen. I just thought that was what all DBS did. Then I watched Albert Lewis & Lionel Washington they were good but not haynes & Hayes.

Woodson was very good but I took him for granted. I saw him on too many Saturday nights at the club here in Oakland, so I thought he was expendable. He & Eric Allen were terrific. Our defense hasn’t been the same since those two left along with rod woodson. Wow what a luxury.

Bottom line you never miss the water til the well runs dry! Bring back nam, get us a free safety, & let’s see what ware can do. He was awesome vs kc, o think he can be a great player. We will see one thing we do know is that the 2010 draft class will get on the field.

Nnamdi stepped up the year Woodson was traded, but now one can only imagine what the field would have been had the 2 stay together…and Hayes and Haynes…what a duo (although I seem to remember Haynes talking smack about the Raiders, what the year before he came here…haha)

    CB
    TE
    DE
    DT

I think another TE is a bit of a luxury, and QB being our second priority is just plain wrong considering Al’s preference for Da Soup. Also we need another interior O-lineman that can snap, and an OLB. Other than that though, I like.

    I see our priorities as:

    O-line (center or tackle)
DB (best free safety or CB)
    OLB (weakside)
DE (another big run stopping end)
    DT (gotta be a nose)
    QB (developmental guy)
TE (compliment to Miller and Barnes)

I mentioned Bears because I consider them a top defense and they run a 4-3.

Philly just hired the Saints DB coach to be their DC. Greg Williams admitted this week that when he took over the Saints defense last year, he wanted to get rid of the guy. Sean Payton told Williams no. “Give him a chance. He needs some help but he’s going to be a good one.” Now One year later he’s running Philly’s Defense for Andy Reid. Not bad for a guy who was a fart from being canned.

(CNN) — The mass deaths of thousands of red-winged blackbirds in Arkansas was caused by “blunt force trauma,” according to a new report by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.

Laboratory tests were conducted on 13 of the birds that were part of the group that flew into buildings and died in a neighborhood in Beebe, Arkansas, 40 miles northeast of Little Rock.

“The tests ruled out bacteria, viruses, heavy metals, pesticides and avicides (chemicals used to kill birds) as causes of death,” the commission said in a statement.

These results confirmed preliminary tests that were conducted after the incident.

The tests revealed hemorrhaging “consistent with blunt trauma,” according to the report released Wednesday. “In most instances, such traumatic injuries in wild birds are due to flying into stationary objects such as trees, houses, windows, power lines, towers, etc.”

Officials say as many as 5,000 birds died in the incident.

This incident came several days before another mass death of animals. In that incident, 450 miles south of Beebe, some 500 red-winged blackbirds, starlings and sparrows were found dead. Also that same week, about 50 dead birds were found on a street in Sweden.

After another long day, one that will be my last here Live, at the Senior Bowl, I got a great scoop that will hopefully lead to a great column in the future.

I would wager to say that one neighborhood anywhere has had two Top 10 NFL Draft picks. But if Nick Fairley goes number one, it will be for sure a first. But what if that neighbor is Jamarcus Russell? Will that impact his stock? We’ll see. That and more here in our Daily Notes.

    Cab Driver Scoop
Getting a ride to practice today, I called a cab service of a guy I used before. His name was Shelton, from Royalty Taxi Service, and he was a fair enough guy. However, I found out quickly that’d I’d like to call his taxi much more often.

-First off, he asked me about Nick Fairley and what I thought of him. We went on for a little while, and then he brought up that we’d be passing his house soon. That caught me a bit off guard, but as we drove past it, he pointed a few houses down….to JaMarcus Russell’s house.

-He said that Fairley and JaMarcus went to the same high school with his son, who was killed in a driveby shooting, and all three were best of friends. Actually, his wife is JaMarcus Russell’s godmother.

-He said that JaMarcus Russell has been in contact with the Miami Dolphins all season and and is under the impression that should get a tryout and a roster spot next year.

-He said that after Fairley had issues with academics in college, he looked to JaMarcus for advice (somewhat ironically funny), and that the two still stay in touch and both still visit back home.

-Now is this a good thing for Nick Fairley’s draft stock? Probably not, and he’ll probably hope no NFL scouts get my drive. Either way, I’m under the impression that I’ll be interviewing both VERY soon, along with over 100 other interviews coming to the site.

Seriously though russell, was overmatched when he came to oakland. He wasnt from a rich neighbor hood by any stretch, but when he came to “the town” he got mixed upwith folks directly frm the hood. I would often see him at the club, and at barber shops, and posted on the block in the hood with these cats. i cant help but think Hu jack would have been able to have an impact with him. By the time we brought in hu jack city, it was too late for no.2 he was too far gone.

For the few season ticket holders left:

    from PFT:

As the Steelers prepare to play in Super Bowl XLV, intrigue already has arisen regarding the possibility that the team will be playing a neutral-site game during the 2011 season.

From the Irish Echo comes word that the Steelers could be heading to Ireland to play a regular-season game next season.

A spokesperson from Ireland’s Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport, told the Echo that discussions have been held “at the official level” regarding the possibility of a game to be played at the Croke Park in Dublin, which has a capacity in excess of 80,000.

The Echo connects the obvious dots back to the Steelers, since chairman Dan Rooney is the current U.S. ambassador to Ireland.

We were prepared to dismiss the report, in part because we’ve yet to find any U.K. publication that generally is regarded as accurate and reliable. But then we noticed something, thanks to a Twitter message from a reader. Under the league’s current scheduling formula, which ostensibly takes each team into every stadium at least once every eight years, the Steelers are due to play “at Arizona” in 2011, even though they played “at Arizona” in 2007.

The Cardinals, who are in a down cycle and who could be destined for a blackout or two in 2011, could be a prime candidate to sacrifice a home game in exchange for the pay day that would come from playing in Europe.

Then we noticed that the games between the AFC West teams and the NFC North teams also feature some repeat locations from 2007, with for example the Bears playing at Oakland for a second straight time. This could mean that Bears-Raiders will be exported, given the recent problems the Raiders have experienced when it comes to selling out their home stadium.

This is all speculation at this point. Though it’s likely that at least one game will be played in the United Kingdom in 2011, the league has not said whether two games will be staged there — and none of the teams who’ll potentially play there have been identified.

  231. SilverNBlackPA Says:

I don’t take back a single bad thing I said about Campbell during the first 11 games. He deserved every bit of criticism.

But his performance was sufficiently impressive and consistent in the last 5 games to make me think he deserves to be the starting QB next year, especially in light of the fact that the other options out there are no better.

Also, he threw a TD in each of those games and both INTs came in the same game.

I can only think he finally got comfortable with HueJax’s offense to explain the turnaround. In any case, it only makes sense to roll with Campbell next season and let him build off the closing stretch.

Yeah your right, only the most important stats for a qb. Lmao

this is what its all about, isnt it? put the ball in your skill guys hands and let them make plays, dont force the ball when its not there. By th way soup hasnt thrown a red zone pick in two years!!!

JC is smashing the hype, and killing the impostors!

    —————————–

    No, no, you don’t understand.

If his reputation is to check down, then if he completed 10/12 on 3rd down, he would have a high QB rate.

But let’s say he only gained a 1st down on 2 of those throws, you’re stats don’t neccecarily reflect his effectiveness. See what I mean?

    ======================

No i get you. The question then would be why the check down? because sometimes , a lot of times it is the right play, and the most effective play. Not open down the field dump it down, we cant penalize him for that.

So that doesnt change my outlook one bit.

Almost my sentiments exactly. Campbell got off to a very shaky start last year. He was playing much better by the end. His pocket presence improved. He was pulling the ball down if nothing was there and scrabling for first downs.

His two int game was vs. Denver. The first was a fluky, freakishly athletic play by a DL to bat a pass to himself and catch it. The second was one play after a penalty negated a TD pass to Zach. Illegal formation. Tasker who was calling the game said it was bad call..nothing wrong with formation. I believe Cable was going to file it in his post game report.

    It’s simple.
This is the pro’s. Not PeeWee. Not JrHigh. Not High School. These “boys from the hoods” have been out of the hood for some time. Minimum last 3-4 yrs of college. Where they grew up from boys to men.

What do you think they do? Come in as multi-millionaires, surrounded by other multi-millionaires, and revert back to hood mentality? Or that they now need Hue to come up and explain how things are in the “real world”? Think they’re lost? Confused? Where Hue will guide them along?

go back further. 4 years of highschool ball. Means they stayed the course, stayed out of trouble, maintained their grades, in order to stay on the team, and get into college.

Besides a few exchanges of “yeah, been there, done that, glad you made it through” thinking Hue has this “in” that “no other coach can possibly offer”, again, is ridiculous.

Bottom line is that in 2008, JR had some fine moments, especially during the last six games of the season where he posted a passer rating over 90. That two-game streak at the end of the year should have been a springboard for the team going into 2009. Behind a legit coach, it would have been.

pretty much disagree with all of that except that we caught denver at their lowest point. we were clearly the superior team both times and it wasnt close.

I was just being facetious. I don’t agree with 90 % of the things I listed it just seems with alot of folks on here if we win, we were lucky or it was a fluke, but everytime we lose/lost it was the “real” Raiders. I do question if these ones are real fans or not, although they can root for whomever they want. I don’t like the ones that “pretend” to be Raiders fansjust so they can stay on the blog and irritate everyone.

There is nothing money about winning games in October and losing them in December.

Was he really “money” against the Colts? I’m sure his QB rating in the 4th quarter was probably in the 130 range that game.

Nice stats in a loss don’t cut it with me.

    ====================================

LMAO!!! its a team sport, you cant blame JC for the losses. JC isnt responsible for stopping the last ranked rushing attack in the nfl( they killed us). He didnt give up 30pts 6 times this year. he cant be the qb and the o-line( miserable pass protection, mediocre run blocking), and wr ( one of the youngest ).

You feel that the Raiders should have injected themselves more into Russell’s private life? 386. LA to TheBay Says:

I agree, actually. In a way, I think the Raiders owe it to him from a moral standpoint. They knew he had problems and did nothing to intervene, because Al just thought he was a good player and would snap out of it. Al’s partly responsible for what happened to Russell. Al is tagged to Russell as long as Russell’s name is brought up in NFL circles. Unless you’re talking to a bunch of kool aid drinking blowhard Raider fans, almost any conversation you have about Russell is going to segue to Al Davis, as well it should. So Al might as well try to make it all right

Coaches, players, fans just couldn’t take it any more.

And because Al Davis is heavily involved, you know he gave up on him too.

If Russell kicks the habit and gets back in football shape, he did so because he became self-motivated and I applaud anyone who overcomes addicition. I’ve been around it most my life and I know how difficult it is to climb out of that hole.
