Jackson’s leadership skills on display at early age

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, January 26th, 2011 at 10:00 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The leadership skills of Raiders coach Hue Jackson, according to a former Pop Warner football teammate, were on display when he was 8 years old.

Craig Austin’s reflections on Jackson, as well as others from his years as a youth and teenager in South Central Los Angeles, paint a portrait of someone who was born to be a coach and never wavered from his goal even while growing up in difficult surroundings in South Central Los Angeles.

A Jackson profile as seen through his Los Angeles years runs in today’s Bay Area News Group papers.

A couple of other posts worth noting:

– Offensive coordinator Al Saunders is thrilled to be with the Raiders, according to the National Football Post (by Baltimore Ravens beat writer Aaron Wilson).

Take note of this one, because when Jackson was hired as offensive coordinator last year, he immediately gave a couple of interviews to Baltimore-area publications and then was forbidden to use the spoken word with the media until a few weeks into training camp.

– CSN-Bay Area’s Paul Gutierrez drew the tough duty of covering the Pro Bowl in Honolulu, where he caught up with Nnamdi Asomugha, who said all the right things about his impending free agency and the possibility of returning to the Raiders.

Gutierrez talked with Asomugha at a hotel swimming pool. He may have to get Lechler on the golf course.

I think Jeremy Kerley will impress a lot this weekend.

Interesting to see what he does on return duty, and if Titus Young is also returning punts/kicks.

pretty much disagree with all of that except that we caught denver at their lowest point. we were clearly the superior team both times and it wasnt close. The first SD win was a bit lucky, but at the same time you make your own luck when you get 12 points off blocked punts to begin the game. Pittsburgh was an inexcusable beatdown and an example of how far the team still has to go against teams that can match or defeat their level of physicality. but i disagree about kansas city and miami. hue got away from the run against miami and tried to make a point with gradkowski at qb and it failed. gradkowksi played awful and that would have been a different game with campbell, grads made several costly throws that campbell never would have even tried. plus nnamdi was beat up and kansas city was a joke, they only got the division cuz they played buffalo instead of pittsburgh and the fg in zona. SD the second time could not have underestimated us, they were pissed to have lost to us the first time and were exposed as the soft finesse team that they are. the second KC game was once again not a fluke because we utterly dominated the line of scrimmage, and that equals a win almost every time. any way you look at it this team was much better than any of the last 7, those teams were so awful they would have gone 6-10 even with a schedule like this. we were unfortunate to have gone 8-8, not lucky.

I was just being facetious. I don’t agree with 90 % of the things I listed it just seems with alot of folks on here if we win, we were lucky or it was a fluke, but everytime we lose/lost it was the “real” Raiders. I do question if these ones are real fans or not, although they can root for whomever they want. I don’t like the ones that “pretend” to be Raiders fansjust so they can stay on the blog and irritate everyone.

    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Wrong. He had rookies at WR. And I’m being kind when I say rookies because a year later, Murphy or DHB still aren’t good. The guy never had a chance.

  • RaiderRetribution

    of the six current WRs:

    Mr. J. Ford
    Mr. D. Heyward-Bey
    Mr. L. Murphy
    Mr. C. Schilens
    Mr. J. Higgins
    Mr. N. Miller
    (not including practice squad)

I only see Ford as a sure lock to return; DHB more than likely to return, 3rd year is now or never (DHB could truly be hampered by a lockout, none or limited training camp); Chaz or Louis = one will return one + will be traded; JLH and Nick both are gone.

For the Record: I feel Russell could have been a great QB and possessed all the natural skills to be a great Raider QB. I own two Jerseys, authentic and replica.

I hate (false-hate) Russell like Chargers fans hate Ryan Leaf.
As a Raider fan I love Ryan Leaf, the name just brings a smile to my face.

Why do you love Rusell so much Debo?

  • Just Fire Baby

    Debo,

DHB and Murphy are going to be way better than JLH and Ashley Lelie when it is all said and done.

Chaz Schilens not being healthy was the only real drop off from one year to the next. Murphy caught as many TD’s the first few week of 2009 as Lelie did his whole year in Oakland in 2008.

Are you telling me not having Chaz Schilens for 8 games runied Jamarcus’ career?

should we go after Cam Newton, Jimmy Smith, or Titus Young…aka a skill player with our second round pick, then we are definately going to be putting up $$$ for FA O-Linemen, hopefully Mankins.

  • djohnnyg

Guess there was no way to talk about JR before someone pulled the race card, huh? As far as Griffith is concerned, whatever. I’d probably be distracted if my $300k car was being towed as well. Bottom line is that in 2008, JR had some fine moments, especially during the last six games of the season where he posted a passer rating over 90. That two-game streak at the end of the year should have been a springboard for the team going into 2009. Behind a legit coach, it would have been.

No way. You are not really saying
Russell would have been (gulp) GOOD if he had a different coach? Coach has nothing to do wiht being so fat and immobile he can’t stumble out of his own way or overthrow WIDE OPEN receivers or throw the ball into the ground or fumble everytime he’s touched. No way.

Murphy we could get a 4th-6th, as for Chaz as Jerry (and others) has said multiple times he was a 7th round pick and still getting that salary, he has proven when healthy he is a very good WR, teams would take that caliber of a player with his contract, we could still get a 6th or 7th for him.

or use either one to move up within a round.

Players are highly devalued come draft weekend.

Chaz and Murphy will not be able to get us any more than what Kirk Morrison did last year.

He traded Kirk and a early 5th, for a mid 4th. Basically moved us up 20 spots.

I would be suprised if BOTH Chaz and Murphy combined could get that much compensation.

Dutch, when was that Woodson/Dukes story; of all the disrespectful things Shanahan did to McNabb: benched for 2-min of a game (after all his comeback wins-in playoffs even), start or bench, comments of conditioning, etc, the most direspectful was them bringing in Mr. Russell for a tryout, but I never heard any pundit/commentary on that specific topic, just news reports of it.

Huge dropoff from Chaz and JLH in 2008 to the rookies in 2009. Never said his career was ruined. Losing Chaz and having to play with Murphy, DHB and Todd Watkns definitely led to his demise in Oakland. But his career is far from over. Better days ahead.

Ha. That really is the ultimate insult. I’m intrigued by Russell. I really would love to see him in the CFL. I enjoy that league. I actually used to have a favorite team and everything. I rooted for the Toronto Argonauts (just for the name I guess), then it was Edmonton Eskimos (for no reason in particular). I wish I could be that dissonant when it comes to the NFL. It’d be a lot less painful. Got to be honest; the Raiders have given me much more misery than joy over the years.

As a Raider fan we are much more starved for wins than other teams. After we beat Pittsburgh I was as happy as I’d been in a looong time. Then the next week came and brought me back to earth.
