Wisniewski joins coaching staff

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, January 27th, 2011 at 2:42 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders announced on their Twitter account that former Pro Bowl guard Steve Wisniewski has joined the coaching staff as an assistant offensive line coach.

Wisniewski was on the staff of former Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh last year as a strength and conditioning coach.

How seriously do the Raiders take their legacy?

They announced Wisniewski as offensive line coach on their Twitter account and even had quotes.

Offensive coordinator Al Saunders was merely added to the coaching roster on the team Web site with no announcement.

Wisniewski replaces Chris Morgan, who was the offensive line assistant to line coach Jim Michalczik last season. Michalczik is returning to coach at Cal and Morgan was not retained.

In other news, cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha has pulled out of the Pro Bowl and will be replaced by Champ Bailey. Asomugha, though, at least got a trip to Honolulu out of it. He was with the AFC team Wednesday.

Willie Brown is a clever answer….but Willie’s not a player. He’s not in that locker room. Plus, how much do you really think Al lets Willie in on when it comes to future team decisions? In that category he and Lechler have about the same clearance. You know Al’s coaches are nothing to him.

One day i was watching the nbs allstar game, about 5 or 6 years ago, and the mic picked up allen iverson calling another player a bi*% a$$ ni**a, if thats not a hood mentality i dont know what is. The fact that these athletes get rich becuase they can entertain the masses playing ball does not cure them of this menatlity.

    Archive phony your a joke

  75. LA to TheBay Says:

Yea, lots of athletes stay hood.

Being that Hue Jack City® is young(er), black, and from Baldwin Heights and made the right decisions when all the wrong ones were much easier and he’s coaching a team that’s like 65-70% black and all young, he should relate better.

I think people, especially young dudes, respect that.

My fear is that the Broncos or the Chargers will find a way to get him as their coach in another year. Face it, Norv is not going to last much longer and Denver will be a question mark. I think any coach would view sunny San Diego as a great place to go.

It’s not head coach, it’s assistant line coach. Singletary showed something as lbs coach or they woudln’t have made him head coach. Norton wasn’t the brightest guy but the guys at SC loved him as lbs coach because he cares and he’s fiery, same reason Wisnewski will do well here

  133. edward teach Says:

    Alex7,

Were he to be named the o-line coach (as Slater was) I might have reservations. He is, as you say, a paid intern; an assistant to the assistant coach. What he should bring to the Raiders is a certain intensity and smashmouth mindset, and before you say that those guys ought to have that already, there are plenty of examples of leaders both on the field and off that have made huge differences in a teams’ attitude and approach to their craft. I believe that it’s one of the reasons he was brought in; to instill a mean streak. And I think he can do that.

Plaxico Burress’ agent says his client wants to write his own ticket back into the league.

Burress, the former New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers receiver who was sentenced to two years in prison on a gun charge, is scheduled to be released June 6 if he receives credited time for good behavior.

Agent Drew Rosenhaus predicted Wednesday that his client will be playing in the NFL again during the 2011 season.

Plaxico was constantly missing practice, like TO has put down his teammates various times in the past, like Ocho has wined and made it about him. On the other hand I’d take a guy like Santonio Holmes who might have done a little dirt but he always plays his ass off and is a good team guy as far as I remember hearing

Santonio Holmes finds a little nightclub trouble of his own
    By MJD
A woman is accusing Pittsburgh Steelers receiver Santonio Holmes(notes) of doing some not-so-nice things in an Orlando nightclub. She’s filed a lawsuit against him, where she alleges that after Holmes told her to “get up” from the couch she was sitting on, she refused and then this happened:

A few club patrons had to step in between the plaintiff (the woman) and defendant (Holmes) to prevent the Defendant from grabbing the Plaintiff. While separated, Defendant then threw his entire glass cup of liquor at the Plaintiff’s face. The glass struck the Plaintiff in the face, specifically on the right side of her face right below her eyebrow. The act of throwing the glass resulted in the Plaintiff receiving a laceration very close to her eye.

When everyone got outside, she claims she asked a police officer to “reprimand” Holmes, at which point Holmes offered her money, saying “that he was an NFL football player and that he could not face criminal charges.”

  180. The Dirtee Raccoon Says:

University of Wisconsin’s John Moffitt is a versatile interior lineman prospect who can play anywhere inside. Moffitt is a big guy with the right body frame to play in the NFL. The concern surrounding him at this point is will he be quick enough off the ball to be effective in the NFL? Something as simple as getting hands on your opponent first consistently can make all the difference in a one-on-one matchup in the trenches. Moffitt does not have that ability and relies on his thick body and overall strength to overpower defenders.
Moffitt displays average technique with his hands and feet, two key components to maintaining position during pass plays and creating running lanes on run plays. Technique and consistency aren’t big problems for NFL scouts as these things can be coached and improved upon.

Currently, there are quite a few quality prospects who can play interior positions in the NFL in this draft. Moffitt loses some of the luster due to playing beside highly-touted offensive tackle prospect Gabe Carimi. These two factors will likely see him slip in the draft a little bit when in another year, he could be a late second round pick.

Wisconsin’s John Moffitt currently projects as a third or fourth round pick.

The Raiders could use a DE more than another DT, but they also could re-sign Jarvis Moss.

I really like what I saw from Jarvis Moss I think he has a chance to be really good in time. I want the defense to be a top 5 defense and I know McClain is young IMO the best young MLB in the game. In some ways better than Willis he’s ,more physical than Willis and perfect for this defense.

6 playoff appearances (congrats mustache boy)

Hasn’t been to the playoffs in 6 yrs.

But of course he is considered an ‘ELITE’ HC.

Just cuz u stay some place a long time doesn’t mean you are great, it just means you did enough to keep your job.

Fisher was inconsistent. They praise him for winning seven in a row a couple yrs. back, but fail to mention he had lost the first seven that yr.

Anyway, OVERRATED!!! You can have him.

  192. YoungAmerican Says:

I think the O-line is still pretty weak on the inside. Bruce Campbell is unproven. Gallery, Satele, and Loper are all free agents. At RT, Henderson and Walker are free agents, and even with those guys in the offense had issues running off the right side.

Cable thought his offensive line could get it done with scrubs and undersized athletic guys. Hue is very likely going to continue moving away from Cable’s ZBS, so he’s going to need a couple new players to help him do that.

  193. YoungAmerican Says:

Never heard of Mason Foster. I’ll give him a look.

  194. YoungAmerican Says:

From the little I read, Foster seems like a tackling machine. But can he cover, too? If he comes to Oakland he’ll have to do it quite a bit.

  195. JB Says:

    Priest
IMO we minimally need a starting caliber center. Satele is OK as a backup but he easily gets pushed around to our detriment. I see Carlisle being replaced with either BCampbell, Loper, or possibly Walker. I see the ORT being manned by either MHenderson, BCampbell or an acquired FA. The O-line still requires attention. I do agree that a run-stuffing DT is still an important need. Your assessment of JHenderson is accurate. I’d still keep Barnes as the power blocking TE.

Our list of needs will have to be flexible based on who AD s able to sign FA-wise from our current roster. I’d like to see Chad Johnson picked up in FA. Having him as the #1 WR and Schilens as the #2 with Ford in the slot. That lineup of WR’s will scare any backfield in the league. Defense wise we need an upgrade at WLB. We also need a change at safety. Branch should be ST and back-up safety. Whether Mitchell is the right man is yet to be determined. I’m hoping Huff stays with us.

Last, I’d say DHB needs to produce quickly or be converted to a CB. He’s got the size and speed to play CB. His supposed WR route running knowledge should assist in his conversion to CB.

  196. Guy Says:

There were notes about Foster flowing all over the field in the Senior Bowl effortlessly shedding blocks. There wasn’t much about how good is coverage was though.

The reports also have been saying Jones has been bad in coverage and is having a tough week overall.

Jeff Fisher averaged 1.5 games over .500 per yr. with the Titans.

I guess he can tell his new owner that 17 yrs. wasn’t enuff time to build a team that could win a Super Bowl and 15 yrs. wasn’t enuff time to even get back to it.

Fisher had a lot of leeway in personnel as well so u cant blame it on that either.

Is/was he a “bad” coach? No. Average or slightly better at best.

  198. priesttj Says:

YA A rookie is also unproven what makes you think te next rookie will outplay last years players? You can only throw so many drafts at one position. Let the guys we darfted last year develope. We need one WR who is a posession type because at this point we don’t have one that is reliable. We need a young propect to backup TK. I would love a truely great TE to go with Zack because when he went out we suffered. When Chaz was out we suffered. And when DMC wen down we suffered. If TK goes down we will be hurting bigtime.

As much as people rip Gallery he’s steady and abetter than average OG. I want this defense as strong as possible when it gets late in the year. We were way too inconsistent.

JB that is blog bullcrap Satele does not get pushed around easily he played as well as anyone on gthat line the second half of the season in fact you could make an arguement that he was the best Olineman we had all year. He was certainly the most reliable.

What yoiu guys have against him is beyond me but I know the coaches agree with me Satele played very well last year.

  201. JB Says:

Say what you will, Satele & Carlisle are the two weakest points on the line. He can’t handle the big guys bull rushing.

  202. priesttj Says:

I agree with CC but that is not the case with Satele you guys are lumping them together I watched Satele all year long and at times he was very good against the best T’s in the game.

Pick one game last year that you think he got pushed around I’ll watch it and if he did I’ll admit it. But I watched the kid play and he was very good.

Tell me what games I need to watch?

  203. RaiderRetribution Says:

Satele was playing excellent once he got his starting center position back, in fact many of those long runs by McFadden, Reece, and Bush from screen passes were because of Mr. Satele’s blocks down field.

  204. RaiderRetribution Says:

biggest weakness on the line was Mario hands down.

  205. RaiderRetribution Says:

    Carslie and Walker were next.

Vehldeer, Satele, Gallery, and Loper were our best O-linemen period.

  206. RaiderRetribution Says:

Rookies that impressed me from watching NFLNetwork’s Senior Bowl coverage were:
    Gilchrest, Black, and Watkins,

none of the QBs looked like gold to me.

  207. priesttj Says:

I agree Retribution for some reason the posters in here don’t like the guys and I watch the film Icannot see for the life of me what they don’t like.

I saw a top teir C at times and in the second half of the year he played lights out. Against KC SD and Denver he was down right dominant.

It seems at time sa player will get a jacket put on him in here and they pile on based on others opinions rather than their own. He has been a scapegoat for this line all year long IMO.

  208. priesttj Says:

I keep watching the QB’s in this draft and I feel they are way overrated because of the position they play. The only legitimate QB IMO returned to school. The rest are projects with one of them having a very high ceiling in Cam Newton. Why Tatum? He always played within the rules.

And Conrad Dobler, number one? One? All time? Over McSorely, who was brought up on criminal charges for his hit on Brashear? That’s odd. Then again, Dobler is one of the primary subjects in the fight over health care for NFL retirees. Wiz! Gotta love it.

Re-sign Gallery to a short-term deal. Left side of line run blocked well last year.

    Draft 2.0.

    Veldheer – Gallery – Satele – Wiz 2.0 – Campbell/Walker

    Strong, solid, young.

  217. Just Fire Baby Says:

Interesting that Wiz 2.0 opted out of the Senior Bowl.

If he went, I’m sure they would have given him some run at Center, he hasn’t played Center in over a year, and if he did well could have upped his draft stock and made some good money.

After reading his quotes in a Penn State student magazine about him wanting to play Guard and wanting nothing to do with Center, than this opting out, I wonder if that was a strategic move to have himself viewed purely as a Guard.

  218. Just Fire Baby Says:

Jake Locker has serious accuracy issues. Had them in college, and is still having them at the Senior Bowl apparently.

One writer described him at the Senior Bowl as a guy you would take in the top 10 if you just watched his drop-back, footwork, and release, and didn’t pay attention to where the ball actually went.

If you watch the ball, than he is not a 1st rounder by any stretch.

  219. buckeyeraider Says:

    Vegas,
Yeah, the concensus opinion on Locker appears to be that there is no concensus. It’s all over the charts.

I’ve heard that he really cost himself by staying in school. Supposedly he would have been in contention to be the overall #1 last year. Some say he may have slipped to the 2nd or 3rd round due to hia accuracy issues and inconsistant play.

But, then McShay still has him going in top 10 in his latest mock draft.

I guess he’s kind of an enigma. Sorta Tebow-like.

  220. Just Fire Baby Says:

    Good morning Buck!!!

I still say to watch for Locker and his baseball ambitions. He signed and received a 300K signing bonus last year from the Angels I believe (still not sure why athletes keep their collegiate eligibility when doing this) and is considered a 5 tool Center Fielder.

If he goes to the mid 2nd round and his NFL career looks Claussen-ish, I wouldn’t be suprised if he gave baseball a second look.

BTW, Cueto got way too much money!!!

I know Votto got his deal a few weeks back. 3 yrs @ 38mil, I believe. Quite a raise from his 500,000 last year. And well deserved.

Jay Bruce got a nice new deal before that, but I’ve heard nothing about Cueto.

I’m glad to see the normally tight fisted Reds open up the checkbook. They told the voters when they put the stdiom levy on the ballot, that they would reinvest the money into the ballclub, and they are finally living up to it.

    Good for them.

  224. Just Fire Baby Says:

  225. Just Fire Baby Says:

I hope the Raiders bring in a plan B at QB for the future.

2011 is all Campbell’s, and deservingly so. But it is his last year of his contract, and if he doesn’t take this team to the playoffs, than that will be a tough decision to retain him, and if he wants to stay in the first place (he will be an UFA after 2011).

Draft a young QB in the 3rd or so, maybe bring in an Alex Smith, or something, and let that person get a year to learn while we figure things out with Soup.

Agreed; I thought the same thing as the year went on and Locker struggled. Baseball is always an “out” for him and much less physically destructive than football.

I still think Locker has potential. His mechanics are great. I’d take a shot with him on a second round pick; maybe even a late first if I was a team with a QB getting near the end of the road. (Seattle, say)

That said, I think the Raiders have more pressing needs to fill if they still find Locker sitting there at #48.

I hope the Raiders bring in a plan B at QB for the future.

    +++++++++

I agree. It’ll be tough to find the right sort of prospect…a guy who needs a year, but not much more than that.

Some possibilities in rounds 3-7 who fit that bill:

    Pat Devlin, Delaware
Christian Ponder, Florida State (was a 2nd round prospect until shoulder surgery)
    Greg McElroy, Alabama
    Scott Tolzien, Wisconsin

Tolzien is a name I’d watch out for in 5th or 6th round; he runs an offense at Wisconsin very similar to Jackson’s with lots of play action.

You and priest are right; Satele got a lot better as the year went on. As you point out, he was particularly effective downfield. I will say I’m a bit concerned as to his effectiveness as a pure drive blocker. If Jackson thinks he can do it, though, you won’t hear me complain if Satele is re-signed.

  231. SilverNBlackPA Says:

I really hope Davis doesn’t force Mario Henderson into the right tackle spot. There’s a lot of right tackle prospects to be had this year, most of whom have a ton of potential:

    Gabe Carimi, Wisconsin
    DeMarcus Love, Arkansas
    Joseph Barksdale, LSU
    Marcus Gilbert, Florida
    Jason Pinkston, Pitt
    Darius Morris, Temple

Only Carimi would require a trade up too.

Jeff Fisher isn’t going back to Philly

    Posted by Gregg Rosenthal (PFT)

After being a head coach in Tennessee for 17 years, Jeff Fisher isn’t interested in taking a step back down the coaching ladder.

Fisher’s agent, Marvin Demoff, told Les Bowen of the Philadelphia Daily News that it was “highly unlikely” that Fisher would join the Eagles’ staff.

Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer has a source that says Fisher will not be the next Eagles defensive coordinator. The same source also denied an ESPN report that Andy Reid told a few candidates that the team’s coordinator job is full.

The Fisher news is no surprise. Considering the money he’s making to walk away from Tennessee, it makes no sense to take a demotion.

Fisher has the money and the market value to wait for a better job to open next year.
UPDATE: Fisher spoke with Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean: “It’s time for me to rest, and fish. I have total peace about this right now.”

    That was me, lol.

Usually the Senior Bowl is a place where players get asked to do things that they didn’t do in college but will need to do in the pro’s. (QB’s under center, switching positions, etc.)

Since Wiz didn’t take one snap at C this past year, you would figure he would have been asked to take some reps at C and maybe even play a little there in the game and possibily create some momentum for him as a Center prospect.

That will not be the case now. Who knows though, he is a real good dude, and he may be teaching a HS English like he did last summer and I can be looking way too much into it.

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Ochocinco stated that he would look forward to seeing Russell in the Cincinnati Bengals 2010 training camp. Despite this, the Bengals stated they had no interest in Russell because they considered him a “project player.”

On September 26, 2010, ESPN.com reported that Russell has begun to work out with former NBA standout and head coach John Lucas, and is also consulting with him as a ‘life coach.’ Lucas is noted to have been through his own drug issues while a professional athlete, as well as counseled others in similar situations after he retired as a player. It is thought that the relationship is Russell’s first publicly-known step towards a goal of re-signing with some NFL team in the future.

On November 2, 2010, it was reported that Russell worked out for the Washington Redskins, along with about two dozen other free agents. It was also reported that Russell weighed 286 pounds at the workout.

On November 15, 2010, Russell worked out for the Miami Dolphins with four other quarterbacks (Tom Brandstater, Tommy Grady, J. T. O’Sullivan, and Patrick Ramsey) to replace Chad Pennington, whose season (and possibly career) was ended on his very first snap for the regular season during the November 14 29-17 win against the Tennessee Titans. Ramsey was eventually signed by the Dolphins

NFL.com’s Steve Wyche claimed that Russell is the biggest draft bust in NFL history. The Huffington Post named Russell one of the 13 biggest draft busts in NFL history. ESPN’s Bill Williamson called Russell a “talented but extremely disappointing” quarterback.

His tenure with the Oakland Raiders was the shortest tenure with the drafting team among quarterbacks taken number 1 overall in the NFL draft. Also among those quarterbacks, Russell has the worst starting record.

In addition, Russell’s 2009 passer rating of 50.0 was the lowest rating by a starting quarterback in the NFL since 1998. His final stats during his tenure as a Raider were 52.1 % pass completion, 18-23 TD-INT ratio, a passer rating of 65.2, and 15 lost fumbles.

  284. buckeyeraider Says:

    Mornin am crew!
Back with a cup of java.

One of Wiz’s first pet projects could be Big Bruce Campbell. AD talked at the presser about seeing him on the field this year.

The knock on the guy coming out of college was that he lacked a mean streak. Sporting News said he was a physical marvel, but more of a finesse blocker who lacked a nasty streak. (although I didn’t see it in his highlight clip. I thought he was burying people).

One thing the Wiz never lacked was a nasty streak. If he could instill some of that as well as help with the fundamentals of switching to guard, technique wise, well BC could be a monster.

I still think that would be an awesome sight..that big, fast dude pulling and leading DMac on a sweep. Potentially devestating.

Yep. Goethel came back for the Steeler game; McFadden was active the next week against Miami.

Goethel came back just in time to be assigned to cover Mike Wallace at times…except for the 5 safety disaster, that was the WTF?! defensive moment of the season.

McFadden came back just in time to get absolutely torched against the Miami receivers.

    LA,
STBD. More importantly, who’s the DC?

Guess we’ll have to wait til after the SB for that one. Maybe OL coach as well.

  289. buckeyeraider Says:

I think if they were going to do something like drag Bresnehan back from Arenaball or wherever he’s at, they’d have already done it.

He might be their last resort option if they get rebuffed by Moss and GB or whoever else they might be waiting on.

  290. BART Bridge Blues Says:

There is definitely a pattern emerging from the guys that the Raiders are showing interest in (and NOT showing interest in) at the Senior Bowl.

Allen Bailey and Cedrick Thornton: DE/DT hybrids, both about 6′4″ and between 280 and 300 lbs. This sounds like another Lamarr Houston clone, which would be nice to add some depth to the line.

Kendrick Burney and Jalil Brown: man corners, both have fluid hips and jam well at the line, no surprise that Al is looking for some CB’s that can play man-2-man.

Casey Matthews: instinctual LB, in the mold of Goethel and McClain, I hope Al goes this route, rather than…

Dontay Moch: workout warrior LB with no skills on the field

Joe Lefeged: kick returner/special teams ace

Gabe Carimi: tall (6′7″), large (315lbs) and active OT, with a run-blocking specialty that can play all over the line.

Roy Helu Jr: sounds like Huggy Bear V2.0 but he is a tough runner with ST ability and local ties (San Ramon High). Bush insurance I assume.

No nose tackles, interior O-lineman, QB’s or WR’s. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss…

  291. RaiderRockstar Says:

So, um, who’s the O Line coach?

    ***

    John Matsko from Baltimore

  292. buckeyeraider Says:

    BBB,
You wouldn’t be interested in Carimi at RT? If the Raiders could land him, probably by trading up into late Rd 1, that would be a coup, IMO.

I would like to see an O-lineman who could step in and hopefully start with the first pick.

Those Wisconsin lineman are road graders who usually pan out.

  293. LA to TheBay Says:

    That your final answer?

  294. RaiderRockstar Says:

We swung & missed with Pagano & Thurman …

next up I have to think are Moss & Perry from GB or Butler & Horton from Pittsburgh

this would sell me on that 3-4 attacking defense rumor and Hue’s promise to build a bully

  295. LA to TheBay Says:

Yeah, but who’s the NT? Kelly?

  296. LA to TheBay Says:

    A rookie?

Don’t know why we’d mess with a good thing.

  297. buckeyeraider Says:

I would like to see the raiders grab a young QB to groom behind JC for a year or so. Does anybody think there’s a chance Andy Dalton from TCU slips to the 3rd Rd?

Seems like Mayock is saying his stock is rising. Has a bigger arm than people first thought. Plus, he has all the intangibles.

Like I said, would prefer that # 48 be somebody that could step in and play immediately.

Will there be any good QB’s left in 3rd rd and lower?

  298. BART Bridge Blues Says:

dont get me wrong, I really like most of the players we are looking at (read: everyone except Dontay Moch), I am just concerned about the positions we don’t seem to be looking at; ie Nose Tackle and Gaurds/Centers.

If we could get Gabe Carimi in any way possible, I would be estatic with this draft, and if we followed that up by taking Casey Matthews in the middle rounds, I wouldn’t care who else we drafted. Straight Dope!

  299. Dakota Says:

it’s the Jason Campbell show in Oakland 2011.

Just to prove we’re serious, here’s Hue Jackson & Al Saunders and we might even throw in a Jim Zorn & Mark Brunell to boot

Campbell’s RB’s, FB, WR’s & TE’s will be much the same. Same playbook & play caller for once in his life

the only MAJOR differences will be O-Line and no more cake schedule

the Raiders seldom ever plan ahead. They don’t have a GM like New England, Philly, Indy or Baltimore

  304. Dakota Says:

Darren Perry may be a candidate for the Raiders DC job. Coached DB’s in Oakland 2007 & 2008, where Asomugha made his first 2 Pro Bowls

Darren Perry spent 4 of his first 5 years coaching (2002 Cincy & 2004-2006 Pittsburgh) under Dick LeBeau … the past 2 years under Dom Capers

the only 2 years he didn’t work on a 3-4 Defense, he worked for a 3-4 DC in Rob Ryan!

  314. BART Bridge Blues Says:

I think they look at some very late-round QB prospects. This is not an area of extreme need AND they dont want to put any added pressure on Campbell, just a guy who can develop as the 3rd stringer. I have a hunch they will try and find a guy that is quite a bit taller than Gradkowski. Hue seems to like the tall O-line with a tall Qb who can see over it.

He was there in Hawaii, btw. That Paul Gutierez guy from CSNBay area drew the tough assignment of interviewing him poolside.

Do you think Adrian Peterson ever sits there poolside at the pro bowl and turns to the person next to him and says “You’re picturing me as a hot brunette in a slinky black bikini again, aren’t you?”

  318. BART Bridge Blues Says:

A QB name to look at is Mike Hartline, QB Kentucky.
He has the height (6′6″) with a career completion percentage of 61.2% and has started well over 27 games; for those that believe in the 26-27-60 rule of drafting QB’s.

  319. RaiderRockstar Says:

Speculation in the last week or so is that the team is waiting on an assistant coach in the postseason. Reuben Frank of CSNPhilly.com speculates that the man Andy Reid has his eye on must be Green Bay Packers defensive backs coach Darren Perry.

Frank speculates that Reid avoided the coaches convention that is the Senior Bowl because he didn’t want to be overrun by the masses of unemployed coaches there looking for a job. Frank says as with most things the Eagles do, there is a plan.

If the Eagles are targeting Perry, or another Packers assistant coach, consider that when the Chicago Bears were trying to fill their vacant offensive coordinator position last year, Mike McCarthy denied them permission to meet with quarterbacks coach Tom Clements. Maybe Reid and the Eagles will get a different response if they call. Clements has been credited for a lot of work with quarterback Aaron Rodgers and maybe the Packers didn’t want him going to help their division rival.

  322. Dakota Says:

Assistant coaches should all have a clause in their contracts that says in the event their team denies them permission to interview for a position that would be considered a promotion, then the team must pay said assistant the average salary of the position for which they were denied the ability to inview.

  323. RaiderRockstar Says:

    Dakota,

    Agreed #322

in most cases, an asst coach getting bumped to Coordinator would have their pay tripled at the very least … unless they came to Oakland :P

Mike Singletary as LB Coach for Minnesota probably makes the same as Hue Jackson as HC in Oakland, LOL

  324. buckeyeraider Says:

I may be way off base, but I said it before, it’s my gut feeling that Nnamdi is coming back. He could get blown away by an offer he couldn’t refuse. But, I don’t know if anybody is going to outbid Al for a cover corner’s services.

Nnamdi went on his espn media tour last week or whenever, and seemed to take offense at everybody’s assumption that he would bolt Oakland as soon as possible.

He has made it clear that returning is defenitely an option. He’s a Cal guy with deep roots in the community, who seems to take his civic responsibilities seriously.

The Raiders seem to be improving. He can legitmately say that he’s been through the tough times and doesn’t want to bail on his teammates when they are ready to compete for the division.

He can cash Al’s checks..hopefully in the 10-12 mil range..not 17. Al made it clear he wasn’t going to pay that, and look himself in the mirror and realize he made the right choice.

    —————

Yes, a rookie is indeed also unproven. All rookies are. Even the “possession receiver” and “truly great TE” you covet.

The Raiders should draft all the players they can at a position of need. Because if, say, a 4th round pick who couldn’t get on the field last season ends up not being able to cut it as a starter (not exactly an unlikely scenario), then you have someone else to go to. Considering all the free agents on the inside of the line (Satele, Gallery, and Loper), the Raiders currently have two interior linemen on the roster, one of whom only suited up two or three times last season and never got meaningful playing time at RG.

Al seems happy with the receiving corps, although I wouldn’t mind having a “possession receiver”. Best chance of that happening is Hue convincing Al to bring in Chad Johnson. And a TE to complement Miller would be nice as well, although I would prefer if they brought in a blocking TE because it seems like that’s the one thing the TEs currently on the roster have a problem with.

As far as a DT goes, I’d rather get a young prospect to replace John Henderson, since TK, Seymour and Bryant are all similar players. Houston is also capable of playing inside. If anything, the Raiders need a DE who can back up Shaughnessy and fill in for Houston when he moves inside. The lack of depth at DE is far more concerning to me.

I’m glad we had a great draft last year since we don’t have a 1st this year, but I agree with you. We shouldn’t trade our 1st. We should have traded Moss maybe a 3rd for Seymour.
Trading Moss for a 4th, and then trading a 1st for Seymour pi$$ed me off.

  346. SilverNBlackPA Says:

I think a lot of draftniks miss the point when I see them projecting a cornerback to the Raiders because of Nnamdi’s potential departure. No rookie corner who the Raiders could land is going to step into Nnamdi’s shoes immediately. Maybe Patrick Peterson or Prince Amukamara could, but they’re both top 10 picks.

I wouldn’t mind seeing a weakside linebacker drafted, but I get the feeling either Groves or Goethel will fill that position next season.

Unless it’s a possession WR, I want the draft to be linemen, linemen and more linemen. Maybe a developmental QB like Greg McElroy in round 6.

  347. BART Bridge Blues Says:

yeah it’s just not as fun, when all of the #1 prospects at every position are predicted to be taken before our first pick.

I know we do not know what is going to happen with the CBA and the rookie salary issue, but could we take the money and get a couple of proven vets instead?

We seem to be a pretty young team, would now be the time to add some older guys? A couple O-linemen, D-Takcle (NT) and/or a OLB?

  353. YoungAmerican Says:

If Nnamdi leaves, the Raiders should sign Jonathan Joseph or Richard Marshall AND draft a CB.

No rookie or FA will have quite the effect Nnamdi does, obviously, but at least the Raiders will be able to move around some money. In the event that happens, the Raiders need to be focused on finding a young CB who excels in man coverage.

Not really. Especially since it is the 17th pick…perfect spot to draft a C, G, NT….pretty inexpensive contract (last year it was 5 years $18 million with only about $10 million guaranteed for the 17th pick Iupoti). If Al misses on the 17th pick it doesn’t hurt as much as when he misses on a top ten pick (Gallery, Huff, DHB, Russell).

Might be McFadden or Ware, who knows? Let’s see how WMcFadden can play with a complete training camp. Nnamdi raved about his coverage ability before he popped that hammy and fell way behind.

Raiders Linebacker Shot at in Hometown

    DECATUR, Alabama —

An Oakland Raiders linebacker was shot at while visiting his hometown in Alabama.

Thursday evening around 6:30, officers responded to a location after reports of shots fired.

Originally they didn’t find a victim or any scene. A short time later Rolando McClain called cops to report shots were fired at his SUV.

McClain said there was a group of people standing on a corner, and one of them started shooting at his SUV. Investigators found one round stuck in the rear hatch of McClain’s Chevrolet Tahoe. The bullet did not hit any of the passengers inside.

Detectives questioned McClain and his passengers, and continue to follow leads from witnesses. No word if they have any suspects identified.

McClain was drafted by the Raiders as the 8th overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft. He played college ball at the University of Alabama.

DECATUR, AL (WSFA) – Oakland Raiders linebacker and former Crimson Tide player Rolando McClain called Decatur Police Thursday evening to report that he’d been shot at. No one was injured in the incident, however.

McClain met with officers and reported that while he was driving a group of people who were standing on the corner started shooting at his vehicle.

Officers confirmed that at least one round struck the rear hatch of McClain’s Chevrolet Tahoe though it “did not penetrate the passenger compartment.” The vehicle was processed and a bullet was recovered.

Detectives said they interviewed the passengers in McClain’s vehicle at the time of the shooting and continue to follow leads in the case.

McClain left the University of Alabama before his senior year to go professional. He was 8th overall in the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft.

Anyone with information concerning this case, can contact the Decatur Police Department at (256) 341- 4660. Persons with information can remain anonymous.

Satele is a pure zone blocking center, and doesnt fit our power scheme. we saw what happened vs, pitt, and mia, he was destroyed in those games and wasnt able to get any push. He is now a square peg and cant fit the round hole.

No im afraid we need a power blocking beast to anchor our line. Again I think he became a good player this year, but he is miscast. Our line is goign to be more like the hogs, of the 80’s or those great raider teams 70’s 80’s, and I cant wait.

Tequila McClain filed a report saying that the next day at about 1 p.m., she and her brother, Myke, were at Shell Food Mart at Austinville Road and 14th Street Southwest when Wallace and a female pulled up in a dark green Cadillac.

Myke McClain recognized Wallace as the man from the previous night, the report said, and Wallace pulled a gun and pointed it at the McClains.

The McClains drove away, but Wallace followed them and fired a couple of shots, Crouch said. Neither the McClains nor the car was hit, he said.

Around 2:45 p.m., officers responded to the report of shots fired at Austinville Road and Betty Street, Crouch said. There they found off-duty state trooper Eric Tucker, who had detained Myke McClain and had him on the ground.

Tucker told the officer he had taken a gun off McClain, and said he had seen Wallace run from the scene in the direction of the location of the first incident on Freeman Street.

Crouch said Myke McClain said he had been robbed the night before and saw Wallace running down the road and decided to confront him.

Tequila McClain said Wallace had contacted her and wanted to return her brother’s property to her, but when they arrived at the Shell station, Wallace pulled a gun on her and demanded money, Crouch said.

The report says Tequila McClain had a friend with her who pulled a gun on Wallace, which led to a fight between Myke McClain and Wallace.

Tucker said he observed the fight between Myke McClain, and Wallace and saw Myke McClain pull a gun, then he pointed his own gun at McClain and ordered him to drop his weapon. He said Wallace then ran off.

Myke McClain has been involved in shooting incidents before. On June 17, 2009, a man argued with McClain on the phone, then shot him in the 500 block of Betty Street Southwest.

In addition, McClain has a history of drug charges. On Sept. 21, he was arrested during a traffic stop for first-degree possession of marijuana.

Myke and Tequila McClain are the siblings of Rolando McClain, an All-America linebacker at Alabama who helped lead the Crimson Tide to the national championship last season. He had previously been a star player at Decatur High School.

He now plays in the NFL for the Oakland Raiders after being selected in the first round of the draft.
