Huff says McClain is OK
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Friday, January 28th, 2011 at 9:18 pm in Oakland Raiders.
There is not a lot of information to add to the earlier report of Rolando McClain being unhurt following a drive-by shooting in his home of Decatur, Ala.
Raiders senior assistant John Herrera said “We’re aware of it,” and the club had no other comment.
As tight-lipped as the Raiders are in almost any circumstance, there is no reason to be putting forth any information on such a serious matter especially when McClain is apparently fine and there is no reason to believe he is anything other than a potential victim.
Safety Michael Huff said on his Twitter account: “I just talked to Rolando and he’s doing good. Everything is fine.”

priest, clutch game at end of ‘89 season, playoffs on the line…Raiders go into New York and Parcells, Tayler, Carson and co. bottle him up for 35 yards. And you’re saying there can never be another Bo? Seems to me there’s a lot of running backs who can put up 35 yards and not a yard more, when their team needs them most. What do you think?
January 28th, 2011 at 9:23 pm
if bo had a bad hip, then every running back should have a bad hip…4.12 40? bad hip cmon…

Face it, preist. Bo was unstoppable when we were playing mediocre teams and when nothing was on the line. Marcus Allen had the game of his career when everything was on the line. Super Bowl 18. And he’s got a ring to prove it, and an MVP award. Bo Jackson helped us beat Buffalo in like week 9. oooh.
January 28th, 2011 at 9:28 pm
Funny Jerry, Huff tweeted that about 2PM…Oh well…
January 28th, 2011 at 9:33 pm
1988 season, same situation. Raiders blow final two games, miss the playoffs.
Final game vs. Seattle, the unstoppable Bo Jackson, “all the offense we needed”, ran for 67 yards on 14 carries. Good. But does it live up to the billing he’s getting in here, considering this is a game where everything is on the line? We can’t get the 100 mark in a game that important, from a running back who’s so good we’ll “never see one like him again”?
January 28th, 2011 at 9:36 pm

Take the ball away more and he’d be a probowl candidate I think he gave up one TD. But he should’ve had at least 5 int’s.

Interesting discussion on Seymour.
In my opinion, the deal is a good deal if the Raiders can re-sign him for 2 or 3 more years.
If they don’t, then the trade was a very bad one. The Raiders were not a playoff/SB contender at the time but a team deep in the rebuild.
January 29th, 2011 at 8:46 am
Those 1st round picks are overrated for the Raiders. The Raiders get most, if not all, their good players from middle to late rounds and trades
January 29th, 2011 at 8:50 am
SnB I agree!
January 29th, 2011 at 9:00 am
I think we can’t decipher the winner or loser in the trade until we see who the Pats draft and how he turns out.
It is simple, we traded for Seymour by giving up a futre player. Until we know who the future player is, there is no way to tell.
Even if we re-sign Seymour, the guy the Pats draft could be great and that will steal some luster. If Seymour walks after 2 years and the guy totally flops, than still it might have been a good trade for us.
To many variables at play still until we have a winner/loser in that trade.
For now it worked well, we got two years out of Seymour and he helped us get out of 7 year double-digit losing streak. Also a good move that we pushed it back a year, costing the Pats about 10 selections in the first round.
January 29th, 2011 at 9:14 am
JFB,
Can’t really look at it that way. Whether the Pats get a superstar or a dud is irrelevant from a Raider perspective.
The question comes down to is:
1. How many years of elite play from Seymour is roughly equal to a 1st round pick by Al Davis?
I think 4 or 5 years of very good to elite play and maybe another year of contributor play is very good. Seymour has also saved TK from being a bust to a good player.
If the Pats get a super star in the draft also doesn’t necessarily mean Al Davis would have got the same results…..
January 29th, 2011 at 9:19 am
SnB,
A lot of people look at it similar to you, but if we are going to look at JUST from the Raider perspective, than you can’t try to evaluate if we got the better deal than the Pats.
Than we are just breaking it down if it was a good move for the Raiders. Based on the way he has drafted of late, even if Seymour leaves after two years you can argue that it was worth it.
I want to try to think of it as actually being on the WINNING end of a deal with another team, another team in our conference.
Until we know what the Pats do with the #17th pick, we can’t decipher that.
January 29th, 2011 at 9:20 am
Snb, just like you mentioned in your previous post..if we could get another 2-3 years of play time at the caliber that he’s been playing, it was a GREAT deal!
Keyword…IF
January 29th, 2011 at 9:22 am
I mean, what if Seymour leaves this offseason and rejoins the Patriots? Or a divisional or conference foe?
How can anyone try to justify that as a good move on our part?
What if his play diminshes greatly the next few years? Well if the Pats draftee flops, we will all feel better about it right? And if he is a star, we will be even more pissed right?
I don’t see the reason to just look at trade from one teams perspective.
January 29th, 2011 at 9:42 am
Forget the future!
Did you guys forget how Trevor Scott was playing at DE before we made the trade for Seymour?
We really did not have a choice fellas.
Not having to watch Scott at DE for a whole year, and Seymour riding the bus in with the rookie made the trade a win for the Raiders.

I agree. Two different teams, two different systems on both sides of the ball. Two teams at different levels of competetiveness. Different supporting casts.
The Raiders got a player that has made the Pro Bowl twice since he’s arrived. If he’s signed to another 2-5 years and continues to play at a high level then it doesn’t matter one bit who New England gets with the pick.
It is critical however, and I mentioned this in my first post on the subject, that we re-sign the guy.

LOS ANGELES (AP) – A Los Angeles Superior Court filing shows that respected ex-NFL defensive guru, Monte Kiffin has brought a defamation suit against his son, Lance, the head coach of USC’s football team.
Said the elder Kiffin of his son, “He’s an unrepentant liar from the time he wakes up in the morning until he goes to bed in the evening. My wife and I did not raise him to be like that and she and I both feel he has besmirched the family name with his behaviour. I wouldn’t trust that kid to tell me where the sofa is in a one room apartment.”

If the Raiders are unable to re-sign Seymour then the trade was a very bad one.
You don’t trade a 1st round pick for a two year rental unless you are a team knocking on the door of a Super Bowl…which the Raiders clearly are not as of yet
January 29th, 2011 at 11:30 am

So who do we watch for in this senior bowl specifically?

A report suggest Oakland Raiders linebacker Rolando McClain purchased a firearm Thursday prior to the shots being fired at his car later that evening
January 29th, 2011 at 1:28 pm
After a 2010 NFL season that saw the previously divisive Michael Vick become an NFL candidate, it leaves little doubt — at least in the mind of agent Drew Rosenhaus — that talented athletes with troubled past or littered records can come back and make an impressive run at it. Donte Stallworth has done it. Vick excelled in Philly as the latest example. Now, former Giants WR Plaxico Burress hopes to become the next celebrated comeback story.
In case you forgot, Burress has been serving a two-year sentence on a gun charge after his illegally carried firearm dropped down from the waistband of his pants in a NYC nightclub and fired, shooting Burress in the leg and almost nailing a security guard. He’s scheduled for release this June.
The Giants and Ravens have already been mentioned as possibilities, and both teams have the kind of talent already at the wide receiver position that would allow Burress to come back slowly without a lot of expectations. Perhaps that’s the best scenario, but Burress will be 34-years-old by the time the season opener rolls around and he might be looking for a real chance to play.
January 29th, 2011 at 1:30 pm
New York is also the media haven that blew up the Burress arrest in the first place, so it seems an odd choice to go back to. Baltimore is already loaded at wide receiver, unless Derrick Mason doesn’t return, but that’s replacing one aging receiver for another who’s been sitting in prison for two years.
Instead, Kansas City, or a market like it, seems the perfect place for a receiver like Plaxico Burress to come back to. By now, the Chiefs have put together enough team leadership and an understandable system to buy into that bringing in a wild card like Burress makes more sense now than it would have one or two seasons ago. Teams like the Ravens can take that chance because a culture is already in place that’s bigger than the issue or personality — Kansas City is now entering that same territory.
The Chiefs have a no-nonsense professionalism in all aspects of media interaction and player expectations. If Burress is serious about coming to work and doing his job, he might enjoy an organization that will minimize any distractions and a market that will leave him alone a lot more than other larger regions.
The biggest reason Burress might fit best in KC is the need at wide receiver. The Chiefs will likely bring in some help through the draft, but receivers are generally a boom/bust enterprise and teaming a rookie with a veteran like Burress might be the best move the Chiefs could make to address the holes at the position. Dwayne Bowe had some brilliant games last season but it was clear the Chiefs need another target for Cassel at receiver. Burress would have a chance to make a real impact again on a team that won the division.
It’s easy to dream of your team signing a project like this, since that’s what most people think about when their team is not in the Super Bowl. And you can spin the topic to make a case for Burress going to nearly any team, I’m sure. But the Chiefs make sense for several reasons, providing a winning atmosphere, a low-pressure spotlight with a need at the position. Sounds like the perfect destination to me.

As far as the Seymour trade goes, the actual comparison would be to compare Seymour with who WE would take with the 17th pick this year, not who NE gets.

Richard Seymour plays better than ANY 1st-round pick we could get this year…and likely will play that way for another 2 or 3 years…which happens to be about the same time it takes for the average early pick to pan-out.

As far as the Seymour trade goes, the actual comparison would be to compare Seymour with who WE would take with the 17th pick this year, not who NE gets.
We traded the player we would have picked 17th this year.
======================================================
If Seymour wasn’t on the team, the Raiders are picking far higher than 17.

Yeah Marcus could throw with crazy accuracy from a running back…. Should have just kept him behind center and never got rid of him…. Just kidding….
January 29th, 2011 at 2:09 pm
Marcus was great.
Bo was great…and was the most explosive RB to EVER have played the game. As great as Jim Brown?? He may have gotten there, if his amazing body didn’t break. But more explosive, regardless.
Marcus was a great NFL RB over the long-haul, with one signature (incredibly beautiful) run to cement his legacy.
The world lost one of its greatest athletic talents when Bo went down, and the NFL lost one of its brightest shooting stars ever.
Comparing Bo and Marcus is like comparing fruit to nuts.

Bo was unbelievable…. Don’t know if he was the most explosive back ever though….. Adrian Peterson might be the most exlplosive ever and he so much reminds me of Bo
January 29th, 2011 at 2:20 pm
This North team was supposed to have 2 or 3 first rounders at O-line.
They are getting beat like a drum.
Mayock says Casey Matthews will be a MLB due to him not having enough athleticism for the OLB.
The most impressive so far to me has been the Stanford CB Marshall, looks real big and solid.
January 29th, 2011 at 2:22 pm
I don’t know about him as a football player, but Bo was one of the most overrated baseball players ever.

January 29th, 2011 at 2:26 pm
Raiders need a stud OLB next to McClain…. Not only a run stuffer but one who can get to the qb…. The Mathews kid will be gone in first round or first 10 of the second round based on his pedigree and the fact his bro is a superbeast….
January 29th, 2011 at 2:29 pm
1eye,
Matthews is an ILB, weighed in a hair above 230 pounds this week, and Mayock has a 5th round grade on him.
January 29th, 2011 at 2:31 pm
QB?? Tough to argue Stabler or Plunkett…both got IT done.
RB?? Can’t argue Marcus was a great RB, and had one of the NFL’s great all-time plays while he was a Raider. It’s a shame Bo’s career didn’t last half as long as Marcus’s did.
TB81 over Biletnikoff, Branch, and Art Powell?? Timmy was a great WR…but no way, compared to any of those other three.
TE?? No way was Christensen better than The Ghost. Todd was a great receiver, but Casper was all that and more.
January 29th, 2011 at 2:33 pm
If Bo met AP head-on after a 10-yard start, AP would have cleat marks on his uni.
January 29th, 2011 at 2:39 pm
Bo was an incredible athlete…so incredible, he WILLED himself to become a baseball player. The fact he could play well enough to make it to the All Star game was an unbelievable feat.
I often wonder if his body would’ve held-up better had he just played football. Seeing him in action…including two of his longest career runs right in front of my own eyes…only convinces me that he was the most incredible athlete to ever carry the football. And I’ve seen dozens of NFL all-time greats do it. Nothing compared.

^^^^^^
Matthews can play Inside in a 3-4 but he is also being projected to play as a OLB in a 4-3 SAM due to his size.
He has the makeup of being more of a OLB in the NFL, due to his size. He is a bit smallish to be an every down ILB in the pros IMO.
I expect his stock to climb the closer to the draft and there is no way he will go in the 5th round. He will go no later than the 3rd Round IMO.

Vegas,
We can get a good OLB like the kid from Ill or Greg Jones. I think one of them will fall to the 2nd (if they don’t impress in the combine), but I don’t know if they will drop to 48. We can still get a good OL or a good CB @ 48.
We need to continue building from last year.
January 29th, 2011 at 3:39 pm
I say RT, OLB and DB should be our focus of the first few rounds.
A RB might pop up if Bush walks, but you can get servicable backup guys (like Bush) in the 4th or 5th round. Same goes with G if Gallery, Carlisle or others walk.
I think Greg Jones will go in the 40-60 range.

=========================================
If the reports about McClain purchasing a firearm earlier in the day are true, then both Huff and Jerry are wrong.
Everything isn’t fine.
And there’s good reason to speculate that Rolando might not just be ‘anything other than a potential victim’.
Sure, Rolando is entitled to purchase a gun for personal protection.
But if he purchased a firearm on the very same day the shooting happened, then one has to wonder if he was expecting some sort of trouble and if he did everything possible to avoid it.
And if he thought such a confrontation was likely, what the heck was he doing driving around in the area where the people or person that wanted to shoot him were located ?
Will be very interesting to find out if McClain and his party had weapons of their own in the Tahoe.
You’re a first round draft pick and a millionaire. You have a responsibility to avoid situations like this at all costs.
If there’s potential trouble, you have the right to purchase a firearm – but you also need to have the brains and responsibility to get out of Dodge, and avoid the possibility of being shot at or getting into a gun battle.
If Romac did indeed purchase a gun earlier in the day, expecting trouble – and then went out cruising in the area where he was likely to encounter trouble – then this is a much bigger story than Jerry thinks.
And it doesn’t bode well for Rolando and the Raiders.

Jake Locker doesn’t look like a 2nd rounder to me. I am just not convinced the Raiders can develop a young QB. So if you want to spend a 5th rounder or something, go ahead…but the Raiders need more help. 8-8 against a weak schedule suggests more change is needed.
As for the O-Line. I see change at RT, RG, C and maybe LG if Gallery is not re-signed. Hue Jackson looking for more power blocking vs. ZBS.

Reads something like this..
2020 NFL VISION ON THE FIELD
First of three parts
ARE 400-POUND LINEMAN A POSSIBILITY?
WHAT WILL THE FIELD LOOK LIKE?
COULD IT BE WIDENED?
WILL THE GAME REQUIRE EXTRA OFFICIALS?
ARE REPLAY CHANGES ON THE HORIZON?
COULD MICROCHIPS BE PLACED IN NFL BALLS?
WILL THERE BE 12 PLAYERS PER SIDE?
WHAT WILL HELMETS LOOK LIKE?
WHAT ABOUT PADS AND UNIFORMS?
ARE HELMET CAMERAS IN THE FUTURE?
WILL THERE BE 18 GAMES?
HOW ABOUT 34 TEAMS?
WILL ANY OF THIS HAPPEN BY 2020?
As the league and its fans benefit from a golden age of technology, predicting the future isn’t easy, but it appears big changes are inevitable.

So he should never go home, and stay safe in Oakland?
===================================
That’s correct. And if he’s not safe in areas of Oakland, he should stay the hell out of them too.
The man is a millionaire. He can afford to avoid trouble, by staying away from areas where trouble is likely to be found.
Instead, he reportedly purchases a hand gun and then drives around in an area where he gets shot at.
Some people would consider that looking for trouble.
At the very least, he wasn’t doing everything he could to avoid trouble.
And if he purchased a gun, anticipating trouble, and STILL didn’t have the sense to do everything possible to avoid that trouble, it’s even worse.
If you’re going to get shot at if you go home, or if you need to have a gun because you expect trouble if you go home, then the smart thing to do is not go home.
You’re a millionaire. Leave your old home behind and start over in a new home.
Get away from the ‘gangstas’, ‘thugs’, ‘homies’ or whatever you want to call the lowlives that can endanger your life and career.
And take your family members with you if they have the desire to leave and lead a better life.
Don’t think that purchasing a gun and continuing to expose yourself to incidents like the one that happened is a viable option.
Because it’s not.
For a guy with a supposedly high football IQ, Rolando isn’t displaying much of a common sense, life IQ.
January 29th, 2011 at 7:06 pm
IMO the Raiders need to draft Colin Kaepernick he may the best QB in this draft when all is said and done. I think he is as talented as Cam Newton just not as physically dominant. But I think they both need to sit 2 years and then unleash them.
January 29th, 2011 at 7:33 pm
He’s just a kid like so many other millions oof kids who do stupid things at that age. Because he was a high draft pick with football smarts doesn’t prepare you for life’s experiences when you are so very inexperienced.

A report suggest Oakland Raiders linebacker Rolando McClain purchased a firearm Thursday prior to the shots being fired at his car later that evening.
According to WAFF-TV, McClain made the purchase at Academy Sports in Decatur, Ala.
Attempts to confirm the report proved unsuccessful. The local store referred our inquiry to the corporate office who refused to comment based on the ongoing police investigation and customer privacy concerns.
It is unclear whether McClain’s alleged purchase is connected with the shooting of his Chevy Tahoe Thursday evening.

For some reason kids at that age tink they are bullet proof. I hope someone he repecta gets to him in time to steer him in the right direction because it’s obvious that those he’s ahnging around don’t have the sense to do so.
January 29th, 2011 at 8:10 pm
I like Matthews in the mid rounds. Great instincts and obviously the pedigree. Remember that big fumble he caused on Newton in the nat championship game? The other big thing is Clay was a late bloomer. Wasn’t even a starter at the beginning of his last season at USC. Could his bro make a similar leap?
As far as QBs, I think Gabbert from Missouri is the superior physical talent with the highest ceiling. But he’s likely top5 or so. In terms of value and just gut feeling about a steal, Ricky Stanzi from Iowa is my guy. I think he can be real good at the next level pretty soon and can be had in the 3rd or 4th.
January 29th, 2011 at 8:15 pm
I just don’t see the hype for Jake Locker.
I have been watching him for 3+ years now, and the guy just isn’t good. Terrible accuracy, bad decision making, turnover prone, etc.
He seems much more of a natural CF than a QB.
January 29th, 2011 at 8:16 pm
Locker is intriguing. Supremely talented. If he could improve accuracy and refine his game the sky’s the limit. If not, he’ll be another Alex Smith, just not drafted as high. Might make sense for the Pats with all their picks to grab and groom behind Brady.
January 29th, 2011 at 8:18 pm
Casey Mathews is 6 foot flat, 232 pounds and barely runs under a 5.0 forty.
If his name was Casey Johnson, he wouldn’t even get drafted, IMO.
Who knows, he may turn into a Zack Thomas type MLB (no chance in hell he plays on the outside in the NFL with his pedestrain athleticism), but with his measurables, he is not even on Al Davis’ watch list.
January 29th, 2011 at 8:20 pm
Stanzi has the arm, and supposedly some good pocket instincts and great intangibles. All of that is good.
However, he has a knack for being high on his throws, it followed him around all year, in the senior bowl practices and a little bit today in the game as well.
Could just be a striding, footwork thing, or he could just be inaccurate. Either way, you don’t want your QB to be high on all of his throws.
January 29th, 2011 at 8:23 pm
I wasn’t real blown away by anybody in this senior bowl. Some guys I do like:
- DeMarco Murray, RB, Oklahoma
- Stanzi, QB, Iowa
- That CB from NC
- The safety from Rutgers
- Jordan, DE, Cal
- Matthews, LB, Oregon
Didn’t watch the oline all that closely.
January 29th, 2011 at 8:28 pm
I do think Murray is going to be a star RB. Anyone know wherE he’s supposed to get picked? Obviously not a big need for us if we bring back Bush. Still, he’ll be real good right away. Keep him in mind as a fantasy football sleeper.

January 29th, 2011 at 8:34 pm
Anyone seen RG Alex Parsons play?
January 29th, 2011 at 8:44 pm
I like Locker I just wouldn’t touch him in the 1st 2 rnds as a 3rd rnd QB I’d take him because as I said about Kaepernick and Newton he needs a lot more work. Gabbert is also a project quite frankly he just ahs tremendous upside like Newton. He is just know for throw form and accuracy but I don’t think he is anywhere near Bradford. Bradford was deadly accurate and still is he has greatness all over him. While all of these guys are projects.
Cam Newton could very well surprise us all because he is very accurate and we all know the other intangibles. Keapernick can be very accurate at times as well he just takes off and runs tooo often.

Was a sure fire top 15 pick, know he was fighting for reps at the Senior Bowl to sneak into the 3rd round maybe.
Tons of talent.
January 29th, 2011 at 9:20 pm
Chris, why do accuracy issues seem fixable to you?
Accuracy is deemed by scouts to be one of the two must-haves for a QB prospect (the other being arm-strength).
60% is the cut-off most scouts use as a bottom line. If you’re not above that, you’re usually not an NFL QB. Certainly there are guys ABOVE that who have other issues and fail in the NFL, but very rarely does someone who have a sub 60% completion in the NCAA translate that into NFL success.
These things have been covered before on Football Outsiders and ESPN, and proven by research to be true.
January 29th, 2011 at 9:23 pm
Scouts. LOL. Yeah. We’ve got a whole team of scouts looking at quarterbacks right now. They’re working in shifts!
January 29th, 2011 at 9:29 pm
I believe Stanzi was over 60% comp pct. Put up over 3,000 yards with a terrific td/int ratio. If he has any accuracy issues relating to throwing high that sounds like a minor mechanical flaw to me.
January 29th, 2011 at 9:50 pm
What does the owner see as the weak links of the squad?
You may not like the players he selected the past few years, but few can argue the positions he’s drafted weren’t needs.
Their MIGHT be a starting job on the OL for a 2nd rd pick. Other than that, you guy are not thinking like the owner if you think he doesn’t like 2 guys from the Wimbley, Groves, Howard, Goethel group enough to draft OLB in rd 2.
ShoNasty, Houston, and Scott = no DE in rd 2
Routt, Ware, McFadden = no DB in rd 2.
OL will most likely be the 2nd rd pick. WR has an outside shot with Miller and JLH being shown the door.

Stanzi has good accuracy, but lacks some arm strength. Poor guy had to go head to head with the bazooka-armed Gabbert on national TV.

This team needs a WLB, another CB, and OL help. Period!
January 29th, 2011 at 10:30 pm
So the owner likes TH, Groves, and Goethel at WLB?! Link please?
I also heard the owner talk about our WRs in the last PC, and I don’t think he wants to draft more young guys.
We will draft OL, OLB, and CB! Print that!
January 29th, 2011 at 10:48 pm
-Let’s start with the WLB: Groves is a tweener similar to Wimbley, he can rush the passer, and make plays close to the LOS. He can’t cover, and he doesn’t play Nickel. TH has the speed and skills to cover, but he lacks something (IQ, Motivation, etc..), and he doesn’t play well close to the LOS. Wimbley plays SLB, and he plays DE in passing situations (perfect fit for him IMHO)
We need another LB next to McClain that can play WLB, and can stay on the field on all downs.
-CB: it all depends on what we do with Nnamdi & Routt. I think we resign Nnamdi and let Routt go. I also think CJ will take a paycut, or he will be cut. I think regardless of we we do, Al will draft a CB. I’m willing to bet on it. lol

If you consider that there has been an average of 160,000 troops in the Iraq Theater of operations during the past 22 months, and a total of 2112 deaths, that gives a firearm death rate of 60 per 100,000 soldiers.
The firearm death rate in Washington, DC is 80.6 per 100,000 for the same period. That means you are about 25 per cent more likely to be shot and killed in the US capital, which has some of the strictest gun control laws in the U.S., than you are in Iraq.
Conclusion: The U.S. should pull out of Washington.

If this blog is any indication or serves as a baromter for the Raider Nation, then the Raiders have the worst freakin’ fans in all of sports.
I have never heard more criticism, more nit-picking of faults, more discounting of the franchises accomplishments etc. etc. than I see here.
So called “fans” praising the NY Giants and trying to minimize the talents of great Raider players and these ones “claim” to be fans?
Be whatever you want but don’t claim to be a Raider fan with garbage like that.
It’s one thing to be critical of the team in hopes of seeing improvement, but there is no way alot of the posters on here are actual Raider fans which make the anti-Raider posts that much more pathetic, cuz they come from guys who are on here every freaking day.
Hey Raider “fans”; the Raiders actually did do some good things this year but maybe you save all your “postive vibes” for the Niners I guess.

January 30th, 2011 at 12:22 am
Just because you could carry a gun doesn’t mean everyone did. Billy the kid shot people in the back. JJ just robbed trains and then there were noted hired guns who were much faster than most. But to be sure the average citizen was much more prepared to defend themselves thus it did affect how they were treated. People didn’t as easily disrespect others. The guns in those days were very poorly made if you were within 10 feet of someone the likelyhood that you would hit that target was very limited. The best guns to use were rifles.
Peopel lived a lot longer then as far murders were concerned t was until the 20th century that murder rates rose in this country. Prior to that murders were very very rare.
January 30th, 2011 at 12:23 am
JJ robbed trains and banks not people.
January 30th, 2011 at 12:25 am
Gangs and drug dealers, drug crews, etc, are typically armed. Does that stop their enemies from shooting at them? One gang goes into a rival gang’s turf, they know they’re armed. Do they “think twice”? The statistics say no.
January 30th, 2011 at 12:28 am
Killing a man normally brought about swift justice at the end of a rope. Trials were not always a factor and when they did take place they were shoddy and more prone to mob submission. Violence wasn’t tolerated much at all it usually resulted in swift punsihment. Now you do a few years and you’re on the street hat is more responsible for prevelance of violence than any one thing.
January 30th, 2011 at 12:31 am
Priest, you get life without parole, possible death penalty for killing someone today. Murder is not even remotely inconsequential. Yet, gang members and angry right wingers still do it. They don’t care if they get caught.
January 30th, 2011 at 12:35 am
Capitol punsihment is very rare especially for black on black crime. They don’t care because they don’t get much time. If they knew they would burn for murder 90% of those kids would put guns down by morning. They KNOW they wont.

Every gang in Los Angeles or “turf” in Oakland that’s been around for some time has several members doing life without parole, for murder. And the active “soldiers” in these sets know that, and know they face the same fate if they pull that trigger and take a life, and get caught. Yet, they still do it, priest. That lunatic who peeled Congresswoman Gifford’s cap and killed a judge at a Safeway parking lot knew he would get life, probably the death penalty, for that type of massacre. Didn’t give a fuuuuu.

I’m talking about frying ‘em within 3 years if there is undisputed proof they committed murder. If they saw kids getting dragged down halls to the gas chambers for committing murder this stuff would stop in a few years. If they knew for certain the outcome was death by capitol punsihment. That is my point!! life in prison for some of them is better thah what they experience on the streets.

priest, you’re living in a fantasy land. And again, this goes back to my analogy of gangs. They know they could die at the hands of their rival gang, but they still go into that territory and set trip. They know death is a consequence, priest. If a rival gang member sees them, he’ll shoot at them. If that bullet hits them in the head or a vital organ, they’re dead, priest. They don’t care. They go anyway. There is a segment of society that simply does not fear death. And, they wouldn’t fear the gas chamber, either. What’s the difference? Dead is dead.

I know that’s true but the law is allowing them to take care of each other instead of doing their jobs. They just don’t want it in their hoods they could round up 80% of thos ekids out there killling each other but that would involve tax dollars. This way most of them die at the hands of the other. It all works out for the law they allow street law to take care of it. But what that does is give these kids a sense of honor. Rather than letting them fry.
I’m tellling ya swifter judicial punsihment works it always has. They aren’t afraid to die if they don’t have time to think about it. Give ‘em a few days to think it over I’ll gaurantee you it is much more difficult way to go.

^^^^^^^^
Nah….I think Casey is athletic enough. May not be athletic as Clay of course….but he is plenty athletic IMO.
Put him on the outside and he will fly to the football and make plays and he can get to the QB is used properly in blitz packages and he can also play special teams. He has a strong build, high motor and high football IQ.
After the combine and his workouts his stock will rise and I guarantee he will not fall to the 5th Round.
He will be gone by Round 3 IMO.

J Hill,
Travis Goethel? Seriously man?
That is not an Al guy, probably a Cable type guy (undersized, undertalented) who may not even make the team next year. Groves is average at best, I would expect this Moss guy to maybe take his spot next year.
Wimbley is a solid LB, but he plays DE half the time anyways. So we got a lot of plays out there for a potential OLB draftee, and I say it should be a top priority in the draft.
DB is up in the air with all of our FA’s. But if Nnamdi or Huff walks (or both) expect to see more than one DB drafted this year.
I say RT, DB and OLB are at the top of the list. WR maybe (watch for Titus Young, has Al Davis written all over him) but it will have to be an Al Davis type WR.

January 30th, 2011 at 8:32 am
We don’t have that many picks O, lol.
We only have 6 picks this year (unless of course a trade).
Don’t sleep on maybe a 5th round pick or later on a RB. Bush may not be here, and Bennett is old, and Rock is really a ST guy.
My top 3 positions to look at in rounds 2-4, would be OLB, RT(OT), and DB.
We will find out what Al and Hue really think of Soup long-term, if they go the whole draft without taking a QB.
JC is on the last year of his contract, and even if he does well, he will be unrestricted and could just leave anyways.
We need a Plan B for 2012 and beyond. 2011 is all Soup.

I think we’re going the wrong direction with the gear these guys wear. Need to go back to leather helmets with no face masks and smaller pads. Go ahead and laugh but I bet you injuries would go down. Tackleing would become more of an art form instead of just running into to someone full speed head down.

I think the bigger issue is the size and speed of these guys today.

Here’s a name to keep an eye on:
Fort Valley State WR Ricardo Lockette…he’s got the size (almost 6′3 and 212) and will probably ran the fastest 40 at the combine, I’m sure the Raiders will be watching, he was an Auburn recruit but academics kept him out:
- With the NFL Scouting Combine only 50 days away, Fort Valley State wide out Ricardo Lockette is already working out in Phoenix, Arizona at Triple Threat Performance. Lockette says, “The whole goal is the get bigger, faster and stronger.”
The positive buzz surrounding Lockette is understandable; he’s big receiver (6’2” ¾ and 212 pounds) with a track background and blazing speed.
During the Russell Athletic HBCU All-Star game played on December 18th at the Georgia Dome, Lockette posted a 4.35 in the 40-yard dash.
“Yeah, 4.35…you know, it was a bad day for me. With my track background I’ve run 4.27 and 4.28 on numerous occasions,” said Lockette of his result. “Right now I’m in Arizona training, so hopefully I’ll get that 4.35 back to where it needs to be.”
With his 2009 200-Meter Championship in Division II, he has reason to expect an improvement.
But don’t confuse the confidence as arrogance.
The young man from Albany, Georgia says of his chance to play pro football, “It’s a humbling situation because you know this isn’t something that happens to everybody, every day. I’m just thankful right now.”
During his time around scouts at the Russell Athletic HBCU Bowl Lockette said he was compared to the Houston Texans’ Jacoby Jones and Atlanta Falcons’ Roddy White due to his size.
Lockette has his own ideas, “The down-the-field type…a big-play, a Calvin Johnson-type guy who goes and jumps up for the ball,” was the guy Lockette compared himself to.
“I plan on having the fastest time in the 40 for the whole combine,” said Lockette. But don’t think it’s just speed he’s hoping to impress with. He also wants to have “the most bench presses by receivers.”
Lockette has posted a high of 23 reps of 225 pounds, and his max bench press of 343 will have him in position to be one hot name as the NFL Draft nears.
When asked to describe himself Lockette said, “I’m just a small town guy. I’m very religious. I thank God for everything that happens to me.”
This small town kid might be giving thanks again because he is definitely one to watch as we approach the 2011 NFL Draft.
January 30th, 2011 at 10:24 am
Ricardo Lockette interview with The National Football Post:
“Fort Valley State wide receiver Ricardo Lockette is hoping to make a big impression on the NFL brass at the NFL scouting combine next month in Indianapolis.
The former NCAA Division II 200-meter champion ran the 40-yard dash in 4.35 seconds at the HBCU All-State game last month at the Georgia Dome.
The 6-foot-3, 210-pounder has been training in Phoenix at Triple Threat Performance and is hoping to run under 4.3 seconds at the NFL scouting combine.
The former Auburn signee caught 23 passes for 262 yards and one touchdown last season in a Wildcat offense. He averaged 24 yards per kickoff return.
National Football Post caught up Lockette for a telephone interview this week as he continues to prepare for the upcoming Texas vs. the Nation all-star game.
NFP: What are you hearing from NFL scouts about your draft stock?
Lockette: “I had a pretty decent college career and scouts started coming in and checking me out. It’s kind of early, but I’m thinking I’ll go in the middle rounds. I hope to go even higher. That’s what the draft process is all about, showing them what you can do.”
NFP: Do you have more to prove coming from a small school?
Lockette: “It’s definitely a tougher road. I feel like it makes you hungrier and makes you work harder. You have a chip on your shoulder because you have to prove yourself.”
NFP: What kind of 40-yard dash time do you think you’ll run at the combine?
Lockette: “I wasn’t too happy with my time at the HCBU game. That was the fastest time there. I’m planning on running the fastest time at the combine. I’m looking to run in the mid 4.2s. I have a pretty speedy background. I’m looking forward to running it again.”
NFP: What other kind of test results are you looking to put up?
Lockette: “I’ve done 23 reps of 225 pounds in the bench press before. I want to do the most by a receiver. I’m expecting to do a 38-inch vertical leap.”
NFP: Were you expecting to be invited to the combine?
Lockette: “Oh yeah, it’s a dream come true. I’m excited. I can’t wait to show what I can do.”
NFP: Why did you go to Fort Valley State?
Lockette: “I liked the surroundings there. We got a lot of support from the fans. It wasn’t too big and it wasn’t too small. I really enjoyed myself there.”
NFP: What happened with Auburn?
Lockette: “I didn’t make my SAT score, so I went to junior college. It worked out well. Everything happens for a reason.”
NFP: What happened with the offense this year?
Lockette: “Our quarterback went down with an injury and we went with a running back. We ran the Wildcat. I did a lot of blocking. Our quarterback just threw short routes, no deep balls, no posts.”
NFP: Was it tough choosing an agent?
Lockette: “My agent is Zeke Sandhu. It was a really, really tough decision, but I think I ended up with the right guy. My parents handled it for me. Now that’s out of the way, it’s all about football.”
NFP: How long have you been playing football?
Lockette: “I’m not just a track guy. I’ve been playing football since I was six years old. Playing football has always been a childhood dream of mine. I’ve been practicing all my life.”
NFP: What do you expect out of the Texas v s. the Nation game?
Lockette: “I’m ready to play. I’m excited about every opportunity to get to play football in that caliber of game.”
NFP: What do you hope to show the scouts?
Lockette: “I want to show them Im an all-around player, not just a speed guy. I didn’t get a chance to show them a lot of routes last year, so I want to showcase that in an all-star game. I’m just grateful for the opportunity.
“I want to show them that I’m a big-play kind of guy like a Calvin Johnson or a Roddy White. I want to represent my school and my family positively and help myself for the future. Playing in the NFL is my dream.”

Ray,
Sports books are just like poker tables, the casino has them to lure people inside.
It’s not the revenue of the juice or the rake on the tables they would be concerned about, it would be the reduction in foot traffic.
You’ve seen it, casino’s are packed on football Sundays, and relatively calm all other Sundays.

And that was with Lyle juiced up on ‘roids.

Jerry and fellow bloggers, I have a copy of Sunday’s (1-30-11) paper in my hands and came across the Sports front page.

Pretty interesting…hmmm

I think we’re going the wrong direction with the gear these guys wear. Need to go back to leather helmets with no face masks and smaller pads. Go ahead and laugh but I bet you injuries would go down. Tackleing would become more of an art form instead of just running into to someone full speed head down.
^^^^^^^
I agree with actually.
The football helmet with a facemask is used more and more as a weapon and players lead with that sucker without looking at what they are hitting. Pop Warner all the way thru high school ball taught us to to always see what we are hitting.
Keep your head up at all times. Never bring your head down and not see what you are going to hit, because thats when bad things happen.
If these players didn’t have that facemask and heavy helmet involved, there is no way they they would be leading with the helmet as much as they do.

January 30th, 2011 at 10:37 am
you guys are a riot.
No faceguard? Less injuries?
they went to more advanced equipment because of all the injuries.
A lot of injuries to the head had nothing to do with leading with the helmet

I think Casey would be a solid WLB in the Raiders 4-3 alignment. He flys to the football and he may not be as athletic as Clay….but of course Casey is atheletic.
By the time the combine comes around…I expect him to be 6′1, 235.
What matters with Casey is game tape….and the kid has the football IQ, enough athleticism, and high motor to make plays at the next level as a WLB in a 4-3 or as 3-4 ILB/OLB. He can also play special teams.
The kid has versatility and he was playing ALL the LB spots in that Senior Bowl game.
I expect his stock to climb after Combine and his personal workouts.
I would like to see the Raiders look at him in Round 3 or 4.

- Well, you know catching isn’t always a requierement for a WR to get drafted by the Raiders, right?..
But seriously, Lockette said they went with a wildcat offense and RB at QB last season due to injuries so he didn’t get much of a chance to show his game.
He’ll play in the Texas vs The Nation game in february , so he’ll get a chance to display his hands…..Jared Veldheer’s stock went up after playing in that game last year.
January 30th, 2011 at 10:55 am
New England should take Ricardo Lockette with the 17th overall pick. That would piss Al off to no end, because everyone knows we desperately need another 4.3 wideout with superior size that can’t run pro routes and catch the ball consistently.

I’d like to see us take the QB out of Nevada in the 5th or 6th round….Colin Kapernick. Strong arm and pretty accurate just needs to learn how to operate from under center and put on some weight. Threat as a passer and runner and dude is a winner. If not him Johnson out of A&M and Dalton from TCU would be nice pickups

That video just proves ,y point look how young those kids are it’s no different than warfare out there that is what it is I have nephews just like them who are full of bullet holes if they’re not dead I was somewhat like that as a youngster. They don’t know any better. I ahve anephew who was sho 6 times and lived now the call him tri-G he’s an idiot. What else do they have to live for that’s why I said life in prison in some cases is better than living on the streets. But if you started frying ‘em left and right a whole lot of would get scared straight.
The kids in that video are way too stupid and young to know better. That proves my point.
………….
Point being, priest, average citizens having guns and barbaric punishment for murder are not going to stop people from killing people. That’s why I posted that video. When the reporter asked the kid about being shot back at when he’s out doing drive bys, he said it was “fun”. Fun to get shot at. So, you tell me, how is he going to stop shooting at people just because they’re armed? The kid makes a hobby of shooting at armed rival gang members, and loves it.

I didn’t see much of yesterdays Senior Bowl game but I did see some highlights.
The guy who I thought stood out the most was a WR from Miami Hurricane’s Leonard Hankerson.
I wonder where he is projected to go in the NFL Draft?
January 30th, 2011 at 11:02 am
After this past week, I wouldn’t be suprised if Kapernick was drafted ahead of all the other QB’s at the Senior Bowl yesterday.
I’m thinking someone will take him at the end of the 2nd round.

Raiders may be waiting for Darren Perry, too
Posted by Mike Florio on January 30, 2011, 1:48 PM EST
There’s an increasing belief that the Eagles haven’t hired a defensive coordinator because they’re waiting for Packers safeties coach Darren Perry.
The Eagles may not be the only ones waiting.
Jerry McDonald of InsideBayArea.com recently reported that the Raiders may be interested in — and thus waiting for — Perry, too.
And we may as well throw the Cardinals into the mix, too. Coach Ken Whisenhunt reportedly wants to interview members of the Packers’ and Steelers’ staffs to fill the defensive coordinator position in Arizona, via the Philadelphia Daily News.
One major issue remains the willingness of the Packers to let Perry leave, if he’s under contract beyond the current season. With Perry saying he’s ready to be a coordinator and with teams apparently lining up for his services, the Packers either have already made it known that he’ll be free to leave, or a problem is looming that could made the whole team photo Twitter thing look as meaningless as, well, the whole team photo Twitter thing.

You’re right, of course. It’s just that more people are familiar with the Michael Corleone character than they are Bill Bonnano. Easier to make the point.

This is some what Maddenraider was talking about concerning the mob, the DeBartolo family and Al Davis:
“The U.S. Customs Service had received information from one of its special agents in January 1981 that the DeBartolo organization through its control of particular state banks in the state of Florida is operating money-laundering schemes, realizing huge profits from narcotics, guns, skimming operations, and other organized-crime-related activities.
This organization is reported to have ties to [Carlos] Marcello, [Santo] Trafficante, and [Meyer]Lansky and because of its enormous wealth and power has high-ranking political influence and affiliations.
In an earlier report, the special agent wrote that he had developed source information indicating that Meyer Lansky, the financial wizard of OC [organized crime], is now considered by most to be almost senile and getting out of the business. His successor and new financial wizard is recognized as Edward J. DeBartolo.
DeBartolo had made several unsuccessful attempts to purchase major-league baseball teams during the late 1970s.
In March 1977, the elder DeBartolo purchased 90 percent of the stock of the San Francisco 49ers for $17.6 million and made it a subsidiary of his corporation
Al Davis, owner of the Raiders and former business partner with Allen Glick who managed Las Vegas casino investments for the mob, arranged the sale of the 49ers to the DeBartolo family.”
It’s said that Al Davis took a 10% “finders fee” from the transaction.
