Well, there you go. That defines Al’s job if he wants to retain Nnamdi: convince him the Raiders will be a winning team from here on out.
I think you’re right though, RRS. I can’t blame Nnamdi if he doesn’t believe the Raiders will be a winning team….he’s had the rug jerked out from under him so many times since he’s been in Oakland.
I think at best, he signs a 1 year deal as a sort of “last chance to become a winner” type thing and if the Raiders faceplant in 2011, he’s gone with the wind.

PA,
I think Al Davis may have lied about Nnamdi in that press conf when he said that we almost traded him to the Jets, but #21 requested to stay
I mean, seriously? It took Al Davis paying double what anybody else would to get him under contract last time!
January 28th, 2011 at 12:46 pm
Not knowing that area where he was driving it’s hard to say what happened. But, if he was in a really bad area (and I don’t have to name the kind I’m thinking of in Oakland) then he’s got some explaining to do as to why he was there and who he was with.
The Raiders will have questions for him if this was the case and so will the NFL. But, until I see otherwise then it might just be wrong place, wrong time. Glad he was unhurt.

I remember hearing that McClain had some pretty sketch family, lots of drug issues, etc. I imagine he was just visiting family and that happens to be in a bad part of town, these things happen.
The Raiders really dodged a bullet on this one (pun intended)

Did you see this interviw? Not saying you are wrong, Aso is loyal to Davis.
“Oh yeah, 100 percent that’s a true story. That’s a true story. He called me. He called me and he asked me, ‘What do you want to do? You want to be traded?’ I didn’t know that was something that was going to be discussed to the media, but it was and it’s a true story.”

What? I said that the Jets have implemented Davis’s vision of a Defense. How is that the other way around?
(1) Davis Vision/philosophy of a Defense.
(2) The Jets bring in defensive personel and implement a Davis type defense.
January 28th, 2011 at 1:25 pm
key to a dominate man to man is to have two outstanding cornerbacks or one dominate CB and a dominant safety, that is when the Raiders were successful

Still stoked about the Raiders signing Mr. Wisniewski to their offensive coaching staff!
Hue = HC/OC
Al = OC
Wisiewski = asst O-Line
Lal = WR (I’m willing to give him another shot with having AL & Hue leading him, especially now that the Raiders WRs are not so green and they have stability at QB).
Henry = TE
Skipper = RB (with the succes he has had, possibly most underrated coach in the NFL)

Patriots would probably use on of their 1st round picks on Locher as a long term solution to Brady.

don’t know if any of you have read ‘Shibumi’ but among the many human exposes Trevanian captures is a small scene set in the countryside of SW France.
a young woman is walking along a road clad in t-shirt, walking shorts and hiking boots. two old women that have never seen her before are watching her approach.
the old women feel she is a hussy because her legs are exposed. they further decide that she is a whore from Bayonne. and that she became a whore because she got caught having an affair with her brother-in-law and was therefore cast out of the family.
as the young woman passes the old women they exchange “bonjours” after which the old women share a knowing smile because they sussed out who she really is without knowing anything about her at all.
kinda like what goes on in here.
I have no recollection that Al said anything about the Jets by name when he mentioned in the presser that he had asked Nnamdi if he wanted to be traded.
but somebody decided he said it so you run with it.

Please stop with this talk of drafting a qb. this has to be one of the worst qb classes in recent history. Cam newton is the only qb worth consideration, and I highly doubt he would be available when we pick. Even he isnt nfl ready, and will need to sit for at least a year. the rest of the qbs dont have anything close to newton’s upside or potential. There is noone outside of newton that could possibly develop into a player on par with JC in this draft. Taking a qb would be a terrible waste of a pick.
If your looking for insurance as a back up keep what we have ( minus gradkowski) or take one of the retread free agents. thius talk of drafting a qb like locker is madness.
Mallet= ryan leaf, big strong arm, falls apart under pressure, and and lacks poise in every since of the word. Trashes his teammates on the field and loses his cool. how can a qb start for years in college and never be voted team captain?
Locker = tuiosopo, poor decisions doesnt read defense, and has terriblle accuracy issues.
January 28th, 2011 at 2:11 pm
@M Lonetree
Did you read the Aso interview? The call came from Al right after the Pro Bowl/Aso/Revis/Jets story.
Jerry Mac Reported That:
“When there were stories that Asomugha wanted to play with the New York Jets and Darrelle Revis, Davis said he him asked him point blank if he wished to be traded.
“He said, `No. I want to stay. I don’t want to go.’ ‘’

Hard to tell what kind of qb he is with the quality of receivers he had to work with. Looked very accurate in healthier times and he’s a threat running the ball. We have more pressing needs: LG, C, RT, SLB, CB, FS, WR depending on how FA shakes out but I’d take him in the third although he won’t last that long
January 28th, 2011 at 2:44 pm
2nd – Wisniewski G/C Penn St(we had to trade our sixth and a player to move up) & (Jimmy Smith was already drafted)
2nd – Austin DT/DE UNC (we traded our 3rd and 5th to move up into the late second)
4th – Pettis WR Boise St
5th – Gilbert OT Florida
5th – Gilchrest S/CB Clemson (we traded our 5th and 7th of 2012)
January 28th, 2011 at 2:46 pm
mistic is on to something here, about how this q.b. class suxs but the only thing im gonna add to that is kim newton also sucs.
January 28th, 2011 at 2:46 pm
it would be ironic should the Raiders sign Mr. Zorn as QBs coach, three of Mr. Campbell’s former OC would oversee him together.
January 28th, 2011 at 2:50 pm
this qb class I think all need grooming, I don not have a problem with the Raiders drafting one, but only with the 5th, 6th, or 7th pick.
I see Newton, Locher playing behind Peyton and/or Brady, just as Brady played behind Bledsoe and Rogers behind Favre.

Cams got bad news written all over him. His Dad is trouble already.
A lil worried about Campbell re united with Saunders but we shall see.
Looks like maybe, just maybe Aso could go and if he does it could free up money for a real WR.

January 28th, 2011 at 3:03 pm
a rookie salary cap could actually be of help for mediocre prospects like Newton and Mallet and Locker, Kapernick and Tyrod Taylor. nearly every team is constantly on the lookout for a functional QB but no one wants to be caught in that no-win situation of drafting Couch or Carr or Leaf or JaWalrus or countless others who were never worth a dime.
with a structured rookie scale teams might actually look to snag a prospect higher than they would normally go on the offchance that they might pan out, but if they flameout there is not the crippling financial burden.
January 28th, 2011 at 3:05 pm
Jake Locker, like Kyle Boller, never completed 60% of his completions in college, a normal standard for top-conference QBs.
Accuracy issues are never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever SOLVED by NFL coaching.
Locker was HORRIBLE vs Nebraska the two times he faced them. Versus semi-weak Pac-10 defenses, he STILL couldn’t complete passes. Weak receivers? There aren’t exactly many Pac-10 defensive backs breaking out at 1st and 2nd round draft grades.
January 28th, 2011 at 3:06 pm
lonetree makes alot of sense.
January 28th, 2011 at 3:06 pm
Can anyone name legit starting NFL QBs that were 3rd round picks or lower?
Besides Brady, who was ONLY a 5th rounder because he started just one season at Michigan – not enough tape on him.
3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th round QBs = wasted pick 99 out of 100 times.
January 28th, 2011 at 3:09 pm
Matt Schaub is the only guy I can think of (3rd round pick) and the reason he slipped was he injured himself to start his senior season, after only starting one other year.
Locker = 4 years of inaccurate passing and struggles vs Nebraska and USC. No thank you, Kyle Boller II.

If you want to show that 1 in 300 pick that worked out, go bet $100 on the Kansas City Royals winning the World Series next year.
QB is a premium position. If you’re even close to being good, you get bumped to the 1st or 2nd round.

McClain has to learn that he simply cannot go around those parts anymore or he will get targeted esp if he’s flashing too much with a nice car or what have you. (Assuming it was a bad part of Bama).
I have a similiar issue; although not as servere. My hometown as gone down the toilet from what I hear from fam so when I go back I don’t go anywhere ..just stay in the house with fam. Rarely do I go out and about in town and NEVER go out to the clubs or anything around there.
You want to take pride in your accomplishments but People just dont think and will target you to get whatever they can.
Go out there. See you fam for a few days, stay in the house, soke it up the love and leave in one piece. Keep it simple.

Hu Jack and Suanders together will be great. hu will call the plays, he and saunders will put toghether the game plans. saunders is an expert in davis vertical passing attack. This was hu jacks call. Saundrs has history with campbell under gibbs as well.
In other words hujack can over see the rest of the team during the week, and saunders can run meetings and install the weekly plan, and he is a direct extension of hu jack. they have the exact same philosophy and vision.

This offense will be in great shape. The question is the defense. The need to get someone in here that will get the most out of these players. If so, this team will be unstoppable. Certainly will win the division.
If this defense allows less ppg you don’t even have to improve the offensive production and this team will win 10 games. That’s how close they are.\!

Big arm, bad accuracy, weak #s in Pac-10 = BIG risk.
Aaron Rodgers had a similar cast around him at Cal (anyone remember his college WRs? No? Ok) but put up much better accuracy numbers.

Obviously it’s true the top rated QB’s in college have the best chances for success in the NFL.
Because of talent & Salary (playing time and development)
But it doesn’t mean you can find a QB in the latter rounds. Look no further than Tom Brady.
It depends (on a lotta things) where the franchise is at the time.

from what I just read
86 QBs have been taken as first-rounders since 1970.
15 1st round QBs are among the 28 who have won Super Bowls (including Dawson and Namath – pre 1970)
of those 15 only 9 won with the team that drafted them.
January 28th, 2011 at 4:03 pm
I think it is about 50/50 on QB’s.
Half of them are top 15 picks it seems, and the other half come from all these crazy rounds and are undrafted like Romo.
January 28th, 2011 at 4:05 pm
Dude if you ask:
“Can anyone name legit starting NFL QBs that were 3rd round picks or lower?”
“If my answers frighten you then you should cease asking scary questions.”
Of course everyone is going to rack their brain or google to find the gem QB found in the latter rounds.
So smart teams should never think about drafting a QB after the 2nd round, ever?
QBs should just drop out of the draft if they are not projected in the 2nd round?

January 28th, 2011 at 4:08 pm
JFB,
it’s not 50/50. It’s about 80/20.
Here’s the point to those that didn’t get it.
The Raiders would be much better served using a mid or late round pick on a non QB position that shows a higher rate of success at those rounds, than to gamble on a QB that, even IF they are still in the NFL a few years later, has a 90% chance of being no better than JC.

Like I said, with a better GM we wouldn’t be in this position.

a7 don’t get all defensive bra, it’s all good..but it is true you do take stats out of context all the time, and then you state it as facts,,usually using the stats that fit your argument and conveniently leaving out others..you know who it was that said “there are lies, damn lies, and then there are statistics??? it is good that there are stats and stat keepers but that doesn’t mean they will fulfill every situation..
January 28th, 2011 at 4:43 pm
the position of trading for a probowl dt.maybe the pat`s gm should`nt of traded him?since they have drafted 7 de and dt in 2 drafts to replace him.and will use a first round pick again this year.i think the raiders got the better of that trade.
January 28th, 2011 at 4:44 pm
Man getting Seymour here was HUGE it was the best thing for TK and some others his rings speak volumns I have watched him during games literally lift this defense to another level. He is very vocal in the huddle and his leadership has had a dynamic affect on this entire team. Guys like him cannot be measured by simply looking at his talent alone. If you do that you totally miss the point. I wish Nnamdi was half the leader Seymour is we would have a dominant defense. Hopefully Huff is stepping into that void in the secondary.
January 28th, 2011 at 4:45 pm
Oh, so it turned out ok because the team we dealt with is hurting, too. Now that’s the winning mentality Al Davis is known for, BlackDeath.
January 28th, 2011 at 4:46 pm
I never said we shouldn’t have made a move for Seymour. I just said a better GM, specifically, a more lucid GM, probably could have got him here without giving up a number one pick.
January 28th, 2011 at 4:47 pm
Raiders offensive coaching staff is nearly set, only a O-Line coach to go!
Defense I am really intrigued by who AL & Hue select, hopefully Winston Moss.
More impostantly though is that the Raiders resign:
Mr. Seymour and the cornerback coaches and QBs fear the most, Mr. Nnamdi Asomugha!; (and Mr. Wimbley too).
Add Woodley and Mankins to the team and one veteran WR, and bring back Mr. Bush for it is going to happen. What is it?… Raider Nation Domination!
January 28th, 2011 at 4:49 pm
no it turned out o.k. because the guy is still a pro bowler, dominant period.and if i could trade the second pick in the draft for a pro bowl player at offensive guard i will.
January 28th, 2011 at 4:50 pm
Trading for Richard was an excellent trade, the other parts around him have not worked until this season, primarily QB & LT/WR as well, but also our LBs has been weak every other week.
January 28th, 2011 at 4:51 pm
It’s just a matter of negotiation skills, BlackDeath. Al means well and he’s very lucid for his age. But a more lucid, perhaps younger, and perhaps more versed in the modern day league GM probably could have landed Seymour without giving up a number one. That’s all.
January 28th, 2011 at 4:52 pm
I think Belichick takes advantage of Davis. Shines Al on with the “he’s my friend” stuff, and that disarms Al. That’s how I think Belichick got our number one draft pick this year, for a player that he probably would have given up for some cash and late round picks.

i i`m sure a gm offered a second or third round pick and the raiders offered more, but the same gm`s in retrospect would now give up the first round.

Seymour was a huge acquisition. And he wants to be here which is even better.
Huff will be back. I read he wanted to return a Raider. Al wil sign him. Huff is turning into a solid FS after spending too many years as a SS.
The communication in the 2ndary has to be cleaned up though. I think a lot of that is when they are in some sort of zone coverage. They’re just no good at it really.
Again, the most important thing that will be done this offense will be who they bring in on defense. That is a critical move.
January 28th, 2011 at 4:56 pm
I just hate to see a lot of these coaches shine Al on and take advantage of him. It’s kind of mean. Belichick wrote the book on it. Says all of this “Al Davis is my friend” stuff to disarm Al. Al just eats it right up, so happy to have a successful modern day coach praise him. It’s like complimenting the old lady next door excessively, then asking her for a hundred bucks. She’ll probably give it to you. It’s just not right.
January 28th, 2011 at 4:57 pm
Maybe getting a successful vet WR in here can help these young WRs just as much as Seymour helped that defense. It could do wonders for DHB although he works hard enough to make it on his own. It may just fast forward his development.

Mankins, (via Yahoo report) does not expect to be back in NE, unless he is franchise tagged.
January 28th, 2011 at 5:02 pm
point black ,belichick blow the seymour trade.can`t take it back.seymour had a lot more left than belichick thought.
January 28th, 2011 at 5:03 pm
Terraps I agree Raiders get burned when they go zone, as they probably only practice and play it 20% of the time.
Should they go zone, they should bring in a whole another set of DBs that practice it for that series.
January 28th, 2011 at 5:07 pm
al would you please trade leckler!!!!!!!!if he is not going to buy in get him out of here.

It’s very easy to make statements that cannot be proved, I could also that other teams may have paid more for Seymour. Now let’s see you prove that would not be the case. Talk is cheap very cheap.

Since Belicheat was called out for cheating he has won exactly zero Super Bowls. fact.

BHP,
people will always moan about any damnable thing they wish to, but doesn’t it feel good to know that Hue Jack City and Al Saunders will be working the O?
Re-signing MBush or at least someone comparable is imperative with an 18 game schedule looming ’cause McSkinnyLegs can’t last through all of that.

I made my point as an opinion all along, never presented it as fact. Used the key word, “probably”. It’s my opinion. I think a better GM could have gotten Seymour without giving up the number one.

M absolutely you can look at the glass hlaf full or half empty it’s matter of perspective. Hujack and Saunders IMO I have a hard time thinking how we could’ve done much better. Hujack is one ofthe very brighest minds in the league on offense going forward and Saunders is a historian in this offense. The old meets the new and the benficiaries “The Raider Nation”. Just add more talent and stir that is some damn good KOOLAID!!
January 28th, 2011 at 5:35 pm
BHP,
some of the people here are haters and some here just live in fear of some nebulous failure which may or may not occur like mice awaiting a predator. I know that you mostly drink the KoolAid, but you also have long experience. Neither of us are always right about what we hope to be for the Raiders, but I appreciate what you bring. Raider on.
