Combine invites
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011 at 9:33 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Seven players from Cal and Stanford were invited to the NFL scouting combine at beginning Feb. 24 in Indianapolis.
The combine will go on as planned regardless of the status of the collective bargaining agreement.
Cal players who were invited were safety Chris Conte, defensive end Cameron Jordan and running back Shane Vereen. For Stanford, nose tackle Simone Fua, fullback Owen Marecic, defensive back Richard Sherman and wide receiver Ryan Whalen will attend.
The full list of invitations are at this link through the National Football Post.
I’m scheduled to attend the combine this year covering for both the Raiders and 49ers.

Keith Butler enters his seventh year on the Steelers’ coaching staff after joining the staff prior to the 2003 season. He remained on staff following Mike Tomlin’s hiring in January, 2007.
Butler and Tomlin previously worked together at Memphis in 1996, where Butler was the linebackers/defensive ends/special teams coach and Tomlin served as the Tigers defensive backs coach.
Butler was named the Steelers’ linebackers coach Jan. 28, 2003, after serving the previous four seasons in a similar capacity with the Cleveland Browns (1999-02).
Butler has been instrumental in the development of the Steelers’ highly regarded linebacking corps. The unit includes two 2009 Pro Bowl players, James Farrior and James Harrison. Under Butler’s tutelage, Farrior, a second-team All-Pro in 2008, has led the Steelers’ defense in tackles for the past three seasons. Butler has also helped groom Harrison into one of the league’s elite performers. Harrison’s 2008 season included winning AP Defensive Player of the Year, making his second straight Pro Bowl start, earning a second consecutive team MVP award and recording a 100-yard interception return for a touchdown in Super Bowl XLIII, the longest play in Super Bowl history.
Harrison and LaMarr Woodley teamed to produce the most sacks in a single-season by a duo in Steelers’ history with a combined 27.5 sacks in 2008. The linebacker unit as a whole was a key reason behind the Steelers finishing the regular season first overall in total defense and against the pass, and second against the run. Butler was also named NFL Linebacker Coach of the Year by Pro Football Weekly.
In 2006, Butler’s linebacking crew helped the Steelers rank second in the AFC and third in the NFL in rushing defense. The unit allowed just 88.3 rushing yards per game and helped the defense to not allow a 100-yard rusher the entire season.
In 2005, Butler’s linebackers helped the Steelers lead the AFC and rank fourth in the NFL in total defense. The sack tandem of Joey Porter (10.5) and Clark Haggans (9.0) ranked as the best for a linebacker duo in the entire NFL.
Prior to joining the Browns’ staff, Butler spent nine years coaching in the college ranks, beginning his coaching career at his alma mater, Memphis, where he coached linebackers from 1990-97 and also coached defensive ends and special teams (1995-97). He then served as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Arkansas State in 1998.
Butler, 52, was selected by the Seattle Seahawks in the second round of the 1978 NFL Draft and played linebacker for 10 seasons (1978-87) with Seattle. He started 132-of-146 games in his career and still ranks second on the club’s all-time tackles list with 813.
A three-year starter at inside linebacker for Memphis, Butler led the school in tackles his junior and senior seasons. He finished his collegiate career with 384 tackles and seven interceptions. He was named a 1977 Associated Press All-American and played in the 1977 Senior Bowl and Blue-Gray All-Star Game.
Butler was born May 16, 1956, in Anniston, Ala. He and his wife Janet have three sons—Blake (26), Brandon (24) and Brett (22).

No. Most on here are not Raider fans anyway so it won’t affect their agenda against Al.
Isn’t it strange that the same people come on here day after day EVERY DAY OF THEIR LIVES to talk about Al Davis and how evil and/or stupid he is?
If a person doesn’t hate EVERYTHING he’s done, or gives him any credit at all for anything he’s done; past or present, than he’s a “Davis shill” or “bootlicker”.

NCAA to Smack Tennessee, Lane Kiffin.By Clay Travis
Senior NCAA Writer | Follow on Twitter: @ClayTravisBGID
The NCAA will cite the University of Tennessee’s football program with a failure to monitor a violation stemming from the short tenure of former head coach Lane Kiffin, multiple sources close to the investigation both inside and outside the university told FanHouse.
The violation is related to improper recruiting contacts by Vol coaches and by Vol hostesses in the since-disbanded Orange Pride program. What’s more, in a stunning development that reaches across the country and implicates another of the nation’s most-storied programs, the NCAA will also cite Kiffin, now at USC, with a failure to monitor charge as well as additional citations against Kiffin’s brother-in-law, David Reaves, formerly an assistant quarterbacks coach at Tennessee.
NCAA has written evidence to counter these denials and that evidence in conjunction with interviews with the hostesses led the NCAA to believe that Kiffin, Reaves and the University of Tennessee football program have all violated NCAA rules.

He did more of that in past seasons. I think having better starting field position on offense most of the season threw him off.
He got too used to booting 55 yarders from his own 15.

Lechler led the league in opponent starting position many times. Like LA said, I think punting from his 50 this year screwed him up, he is used to pounding 70 yard punts! LOL
February 3rd, 2011 at 8:09 am
How come FG kickers get credit from where the kick the ball (ie a kick from the 40 yard line is a 57 yard FG) but punters only get credit from the line of scrimmage?

so true about Lechler, he doesnt do a good job with ball placement, he just has a huge leg when the Raiders are backed up. That’s why he never really leads the league in net punting yards, he can’t make all the little punts.
Can’t wait for Monday, so we can hear some news on our defensive coordinator.
February 3rd, 2011 at 8:29 am
Shane Lechler has been 1st or 2nd in the league in NET punting 5 years in a row.
Took 20 seconds to look up.
February 3rd, 2011 at 8:31 am
Inside the 20, not usually a top-5, but as stated, hard to do that when constantly punting from your own 25.

Owen Marecic is a beast, I watched this guy at the Stanford Spring Game (at Kezar) his year. Playing both ways, just like during the season. Never sat on the bench, was in on every play, always around the ball. Just a smart, smart football player; excellent instincts, and all day tough.
Also watched him destroy ND, at ND Stadium this season. Although I was booing him the whole time, I couldn’t help but think what a playmaker that guy is. He scored a touchdown on offense, and then on defense in a 30 second span.
February 3rd, 2011 at 8:50 am
I agree with MR lets trade up to get a first round pick then lets take a punter!

4th round S
5th round Pepsi truck
February 3rd, 2011 at 8:56 am

who will be the next Jacoby Ford & Bruce Campbell ???

3) OG/C John Moffitt (Wisconsin), DT/NT Sione Fua (Stanford), or OLB Greg Jones (Micghigan State)
4) OT Marcus Gilbert (Florida)
5) C/OG Brandon Fusco (Slippery Rock)
6) DE/DT Cedrick Thornton (Southern Arkansas)
7) RB Robert Hughes (Notre Dame) or WR Ricardo Lockette (Ford Valley State)
Then try like hell to bring Miller, Asomugha, Seymour, Wimbley, Huff, Routt, Bush, Reece, Condo and Cartwright all back into the fold.
If Huff walks, sign Jarrad Page to compete with Stevie Brown.
If Bush walks, sign Willis McGahee or bring in a rookie.

Yeah this team still needs to add depth at the WLB spot.
I hope they can snag another athletic beast type with a high football IQ and good motor.
Ahem….Casey Matthews.
He may not be as big as Clay….but I will take a smaller version of Clay on this Raider football team anytime!
February 3rd, 2011 at 9:34 am
Actually,
I’d make a few changes …
4. Cedrick Thornton, LDE
7. Taylor Potts, QB
give me 2 DB’s to replace Asomugha & Huff
Branch & Mitchell will start at safety
CJ37 & Routt will start at corner
Our offense is going to be a juggernaut under Jackson/Saunders according to 90 percent of Raider Nation, so with McClain stuffing the run and Waufle’s dynamic pass rush the secondary shouldn’t have to carry such a heavy burden!
Re-sign Seymour & Wimbley !!!

2) DT/NT Phil Taylor (Baylor) or OG/C Stefan Wisniewski (Penn State)

4) OT Marcus Gilbert (Florida) or DT/NT Ian Williams (Notre Dame)
5) C/OG Brandon Fusco (Slippery Rock)

7) WR Ricardo Lockette (Ford Valley State) or RB Robert Hughes (Notre Dame)
Then try like hell to bring Miller, Asomugha, Seymour, Wimbley, Huff, Routt, Bush, Reece, Condo and Cartwright all back into the fold.
If Huff walks, sign Jarrad Page to compete with Stevie Brown.
If Bush walks, sign Willis McGahee or bring in a rookie.

I’m good with Houston & ShoNasty starting at DE with a few snaps going to Bryant and Scott (or Moss) in reserve too!

Cedrick Thornton had a monster senior bowl practice week. He projects as a 6th or 7th rounder on draft sites, but I think actual NFL scouts have him rated higher. He might slide to the 5th, more likely, and I think the Raiders would strike early. So criticsm accepted, Thornton in the 5th.

I heard on the radio that UFC is the one that snitched out ATDHE. We lose all the free NFL HD games because of them.
February 3rd, 2011 at 9:59 am
No, I am calling Taylor a nose gaurd to differentiate him from little DT’s. I think Taylor would play the role of John Henderson last year, and could anchor a 34 line on some down. But I am certain that the Raiders will still play a base 43 defense.
RRS,
replace any of the guys in my draft with Kendrick Burney or Jalil Brown to get Al’s DB fix.

Apparently the Raiders are scouting him, so it’s possible.
Regardless, it might be nice to have a NT-type player in the middle of a 4-3 line, especially on early downs and in short-yardage situations.
Plus, if the Raiders DID want to show 3-4 looks and move their speed rushers to the edge, they’d have a legitimate 3-4 NT instead of having to force Tommy Kelly into that role.
It would also be nice insurance in case Seymour doesn’t sign a long-term deal or TK’s very productive 2010 season was a mirage.
February 3rd, 2011 at 10:00 am
The window for NFL teams to assign franchise and transition tags will extend from February 10 until February 23.
There are going to be a ton of tags used after the Super Bowl, and the Vincent Jackson situation is one of the most interesting. While GM A.J. Smith has been reluctant to spend big money on receivers, he’s got the rights to the best wideout eligible to hit the market. We suspect Jackson will be tagged.

I really like Gilbert in the 4th, and I honestly don’t mind Thornton in the 5th (though I’d pegged him as a 6th rounder). I’m still a fan of Wiz in rnd 2, and I thought that Thornton was a 300 lbs NT type DT? I see here you have him listed as a DE? Can you clarify for me?
February 3rd, 2011 at 10:08 am
I would be happy with DT Brandon Baer in the 3rd or 4th if he is still there. He was a disruptive force up front, spent a lot of time on the other side of the line of scrimmage. The problem with players from Oregon is that they do so much substituting on both sides of the ball it makes it hard to quantify any given player’s stamina through 4 quarters. They all play so fresh for 3 or 4 straight plays and then they take 2 or 3 plays off to stay fresh…

4- Marcus Gilbert (OT[R] Florida)
5- Martin Parker (DT[NT] Richmond)
6- Tori Gurley (WR South Carolina)
7- D.J. Holt (ILB[34] Cal)
Questions/comments:
A. Compare/Contrast Martin Parker with Cedrick Thornton
B. Seriously, think about our Oline after such a draft.
C. Yes, I’m on the Gurley bandwagon.
D. If we really do go 3-4, we need another young ILB, Holt fits the bill and will be there late.

Casey Matthews is def a stud, he may get into the 2nd round, just because of his last name. But I am banking on him having a pretty flat combine performance and lowering his stock just a bit. He isn’t as fast or strong as big brother, that could hurt him.
If young Wiz is gone, I think the Raiders have to get this Zane Taylor kid from Utah. 6′2″ 309lbs, strongest guy on the Utes last season.
We have nobody to back-up Satele and we need someone a bit stronger to replace him eventually anyway. Taylor looks like a beast, could be a steal in the 6th or even the 5th.

February 3rd, 2011 at 10:20 am
No tangible progress was made toward a contract extension in the Ravens’ Wednesday meeting with free agent Jared Gaither.
The Baltimore Sun is sticking to its prediction that Gaither won’t be back, despite the Ravens’ need for a left tackle upgrade. The Ravens are expected to extend Gaither a restricted free agent tender later this month, but don’t actually anticipate him being restricted in a confusing situation per the current CBA. He’s expected to be an unrestricted free agent.

Stephen Paea, DT Oregon State
Paea appeared well on his way to an impressive week at the Senior Bowl. Instead, the discovery of a torn lateral meniscus in his right knee ended Paea’s week early!
Was a projected 1st RD.
Due to injury, is now projected in the late 2nd early 3rd round in the 2011 Draft.

AFTER the calls have been made, right before EVERY snap, he lifts his head straight up, looks to the right, looks to the left, then snaps the ball.

As a Tomlinson hater I just love this!!:
Tomlinson will retire if Jets cut him
“Part of it really does suck,” Tomlinson said in a quiet moment during his “Project 21” fundraiser for his charitable foundation last night (more on that below). “It really does for me. To be in limbo… sometimes, I just want to say, ‘You know what? I’m just going to retire.’”
“It’s kind of a messed up feeling to be in,” he added about being in limbo. “Because I feel like we had a great season. Things went well. But here there’s questions about whether I’m going to come back (with the one) year that I have left (on my contract). So who knows.”

^^^^^^
Center Zane Taylor would be pick in Round 5!

Mock Draft V1.2
2. Phil Taylor
3. Casey Matthews
4. Chris Hairston, Marcus Gilbert, John Moffitt
5. Cedrick Thornton
6. Zane Taylor
7. Taylor Potts
FA. Mike Price
FA. Joe Lefeged
^^^^^^^
Solid Raider Mock!
Gilbert in Round 4 would be a great pick!
Thornton and Taylor in Rounds 5 and 6 would be great picks also
Love the picks of P Taylor in Rd 2 and Matthews in Rd 3!

Can anyone explain to me why Jim Plunkett is not in the hall of fame?
February 3rd, 2011 at 11:53 am
“Hate is a poison you drink while waiting for the other person to die”.
—————————————
It’s funny, any conversation is acceptable here by “Raider Fans” EXCEPT criticism of Raider management.
February 3rd, 2011 at 11:56 am
Tomlinson had 900 rushing yards, over 1200 all purpose, and averaged just over 4 yards a carry. That’s not bad for a backup! His team got to the AFC championship. I’m guessing salary issues will factor into a fallout with the Jets, if it were to happen, because Tomlinson certainly had a better year than a lot of his critics thought he would. In fact, I don’t know what more he could have done, considering his age. He had a helluva year.

February 3rd, 2011 at 12:01 pm
I’m not a real Raider fan. I’m just a fan. Just want to see the team win. A “real” Raider fan, according to so many of those in here who declare themselves to be one, is someone who supports and argues for every single decision the team makes, to some degree. Someone who always, always gives the team the benefit of the doubt, and takes a positive approach, even if they don’t like the decision. They basically equate being a Raider fan to be an employee of a company. I just don’t see it that way. I’m a fan who speaks my mind. If I don’t like a decision the team makes, I say so. So, I’m not a “real” fan, per se. But I am a Raider fan. I want to see this team win a Super Bowl within the next few years. I just know it won’t happen with Al even remotely involved.

If the Oakland Raiders need another reminder of the importance of re-signing cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, all they have to do is watch the Super Bowl on Sunday.
One of the reasons the Green Bay Packers will be facing the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Super Bowl is the presence of cornerback Charles Woodson. Woodson was the No. 4 overall player drafted by Oakland in 1998.
He was a good Raider. He was defensive rookie of the year and he made All-Pro three straight years because he dealt with several nagging injuries. Woodson departed Oakland for Green Bay as a free agent in 2006. He has enjoyed a career resurgence. Woodson, 34, was named the NFL’s defensive player of the year in 2009.
Oakland knows it lost a fine cornerback. It won’t want to lose another one this offseason.
Asomugha’s contract unexpectedly voided after the 2010 season. Oakland cannot give him the franchise tag. The Raiders have several free agents, but Asomugha is expected to be a top priority. Oakland owner Al Davis has said he hopes to re-sign Asomugha. Davis is extremely proud and it likely doesn’t sit well seeing Woodson get to the stage with another team.
It could become more motivation for the Raiders to keep Asomugha and ensuring if he ever makes it to the Super Bowl, it will be with him wearing the Silver and Black.
February 3rd, 2011 at 12:42 pm
RRS,
Would have loved to have had Butler, but he’s exclusively a 3-4 guy. Al might go for some 3-4 looks, but a pure 3-4 base defense? No way.
Also, sad to say, I’m not sure Butler would want to come from an organization run like the Steelers to one run like Oakland.
Butler was never a realistic possibility.

This article could be considered a complete contradiction to alot of comments made on this blog about “Al Davis running the Defense”, “The defense is Al’s”, “Al calls the defensive plays” etc…
For instance Bill states, “Oakland knows it lost a fine cornerback. It won’t want to lose another one this offseason”.
and
“Davis is extremely proud and it likely doesn’t sit well seeing Woodson get to the stage with another team”…
So either Daivs made a mistake, or coaches, personnel, etc do have some say, and someone let Woodson walk.

PA,
Rob Ryan was allowed to run a 3-4 Defense in Oakland. Why wouldn’t Keith Butler be allowed to do the same?
Rob “the slob” had the carpet pulled from underneath him before he ever got the personnel to try it again in Oakland. I guess Sapp at DE, Brayton at OLB and a 36-year old Ted Washington were supposed to be dominant forces?

RRS,
Sounds like pretty typical Davis behavior, if I’m gonna be honest.

“There’s no guarantees. There are ups and downs in any sport. But if you have the people in place, you always have a chance to be successful. That goes back to my grandfather and down to my father.”
More than by any player or coach, the Steelers are identified by the way they have done business for 40 years. They build through the draft, take care of their players, maintain financial discipline, eschew flashy hires and treat people well.
In the win-now world of professional sports, the Steelers have managed a twin bill that only a few other organizations, including the Green Bay Packers, can claim: they win now, and they set themselves up for the future, too. Of the 22 players who are expected to start for the Steelers on Sunday, 18 were either drafted by the Steelers or signed as undrafted or rookie free agents. For some of those players, it will be their third Super Bowl appearance in six years.
It is a blueprint that has put six Lombardi Trophies behind glass in Pittsburgh, given the Steelers a chance to win a seventh, generated a devoted, nationwide fan base and left other owners agog, although Rooney laughs a little when asked if the Steelers’ way has been codified. It has not, he said.
February 3rd, 2011 at 2:01 pm
Let’s face it Sapp is a fat overpaid bumbling idiot who can barely talk correctly. Seymour was brought in to do what fat lazy Sapp was overpaid to do. Be a team leader on defense and turn this thing around.
Instead Sapp helped to create the “Collect a Check” mentality here in Oakland. Then after he left with his pockets full; of our money for being fat and lazy he bad mouthed the whole organization.
That is why Seymour is a better HOF candidate if you ask me.
February 3rd, 2011 at 2:02 pm

Pittsburgh has hired only three coaches since 1969 — Chuck Noll was the first — and each has won at least one Super Bowl. With Noll, Dan Rooney and his brother Art Jr. formed a threesome that focused on building through the draft. That approach remains. Offensive and defensive systems are not adopted and ripped up every few years, necessitating cyclical remakings of the roster.

The continuity means everybody from the owners to an entry-level scout knows what Steelers players should be like. The team is able to draft prospects who will fit its system for years — because the system is not going to change — giving the Steelers time to develop players.

Why are you people so afraid of knowledge?
————————————-
I’m not. Just clownin’. Slow day.
The Steelers are the class of the NFL and blah blah blah.
I would love to see stability here. It was the key to our success last decade.

Two weeks ago, when Dan Rooney, now the United States ambassador to Ireland, returned to Pittsburgh for the A.F.C. championship game, he spoke to a handful of reporters about the N.F.L.’s labor strife. During that conversation he offered a bombshell of a quote that summed up the Steelers’ ability to take the long view of success.
“I’d rather not have the money,” Rooney said about the proposed 18-game regular season.
That comment snapped a few heads around the league, particularly among owners who would rather have the money. But Rooney wonders why it is necessary to change something — 16 games for 32 teams — that has worked successfully for years. It is a mind-set the Steelers have leaned on in the past: do not make sea-change decisions in haste.

I like the idea of an 18 game regular season.
Eliminate 2, or maybe even all, of the pre-season games and the players don’t wind up playing a longer season or taking more snaps.
This would put an increased emphasis on in-house player evaluations and the ability of a coaching staff to more rapidly prepare for the regular season, but is easily doable.
We’d get to see 2 more weeks of meaningful Raider/NFL action.
Wish that the 2010 season was 2 weeks longer. Might have extended the agony of watching the Raids fall short of the playoffs…or maybe they would have emerged as AFC West champs.
Either way, it would have been exciting to see.
Bring on the 18 game regular season.
JaJason sucks.
