It’s the Steelers, 23-17
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Saturday, February 5th, 2011 at 11:36 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Haven’t received an e-mail for a couple of months now reminding me of how badly I flubbed last year’s Super Bowl prediction.
I had the Colts winning, in large part because the New Orleans Saints had stopped scoring defensive touchdowns as they were earlier in the season and they certainly weren’t going to get one against Indianapolis and Peyton Manning.
The logic seemed sound enough, until Tracy Porter jumped a Manning pass and returned it 74 yards for a touchdown with 3:12 to play to put the Colts away and send the Big Easy into ecstasy with a 31-17 win.
This year, I’m taking the Steelers, for reasons explained in this link as well as in Sunday’s Bay Area News Group papers.
It’s my contention that the four-game suspension incurred by Ben Roethlisberger was ultimately a benefit, reminding the Steelers of their true identity during a 3-1 start.
Columnist Monte Poole, on the other hand, likes Green Bay and imagines Bill Walsh at the helm, directing a quick-throwing West Coast offense against the Pittsburgh defense.

I even shook Bo’s hand after he ran into the tunnel in the Kingdome cause I was working my way down to the field to chat with some old friends I know. But I gotta tell ya, I was there when they blasted that awful gray wart to the ground too. I was a dignitary and a guest of Seattle. The demolition of the Kingdome was a welcome sight because we had some bad memories there that left a nasty taste. Some good memories, but more bad ones. Glad to see it go.

“What a great signal the NFL HOF voters sent out to the kids of today, by electing Deion Sanders into the Hall, they did the same thing a few years ago when they elected Michael Irvin. However Deion, even more so was a player who epitomizes the “me first, arrogant” attitude that we are seeing so much more of in sports today. Not to mention the guy was not even a complete player as he has said “he did not get paid to tackle”. Let me throw this out there, if Deion stayed on the Falcons his entire career, and was not still in the public eye, would he be a first time HOF’er? On the other hand 3 class guys who kept their “noses clean” off the field and dominated on the field in Andre Reed and Tim Brown or Jerome Bettis will have to wait another year”.

Now having said that, if Randy Moss gets into the Hall, I will puke! A guy that quits on his team, no matter how great his numbers are, and his numbers are great, doesn’t even deserve to be allowed into the Hall as a paying customer.

Here’s the question after watching some youtube clips, draft discussion etc. Who do you Really think should start at SS?
My vote goes for Mike Mitchell. The guy is an impact player. T.Branch (ignoring this season’s complete f’k up) is a very good player, but he just doesn’t have the INSTINCTS that Mike Mitchell has. Mitchell has a nose for that ball and where to be when you watch him play. You have to keep this guy in the game. He seems to have made more impact in his relatively limited play than Branch. And the hits he brings, brings the right attitude to that defense.
February 6th, 2011 at 8:07 am
And to Believe the Cabes (as was rumored) wanted that guy cut?
February 6th, 2011 at 8:11 am
RoMac in his second year will be something to watch. Get the right DC in here and watch as Hue’s attitude permeates throughout the team. This defense could be ridiculously good.
Assuming the offense remains at min even keel, all that matters is what happens on the defensive side of the ball in my book. An improvement there would sure-fire put this team in the playoffs.
February 6th, 2011 at 8:15 am
Terrapin Raider,
I have seen some good things from Mike Mitchell. i recall two turnovers he had were more of being in the right place at the right time, but that goes to show he is around the ball ready to make a play.
February 6th, 2011 at 8:20 am
Mclain is a special player. That hit he had against Darren Sproles was one of the biggest plays in recent raiders history.
For years I have watched Rb’s catch quick hitters out of the backfield and turn them into first downs… mclain makes that a scary prospect for all rb now.
Mclain struggled a bit early in the year in coverage, but mid way through you could see it just clicked. I think he was injured during the Jacksonville game. I remeber watching Jones-drew catch a few passes and felt like Mclain might have gotten one or two more stops if he were playing.
February 6th, 2011 at 8:21 am
That part of things I just don’t get. Branch had a awful year by many accts. Mitchell should have been starting. I know Mitchell was slowly taking time away from Branch, but imo they should have just made the move. It may have saved a game (or 2).
But thats the thing, given the rumors about the coaches trying to cut MM34 after preseason but Al wouldn’t relent; they had be biased towards Branch – regardless of how bad he was they just would committ to MM34. Sounds like ego to me at the detriment winning games.
February 6th, 2011 at 8:28 am
I rewatched that RoMac hit on Sproiles HAHA. It was soooo interesting if you look beneath the surface of the hit itself. RoMac TKO’d him!!! LOL.
Thing is, EVERYONE, always brags about how ’strong’ and ‘powerful’ and difficult to bring down Sproiles is as a runner. When RoMac brought the pain (literally) they all were behaving and talking like Sproiles is the VICTIM. LOL!!!!
Like “poor little guy, gotta go up against that wolly mammoth” ..lol ….kept say ‘well, it was a clean shot’ looking to justify some reason how Sproiles got TKO’d
February 6th, 2011 at 8:29 am
I have a hard time understanding why the Pack is favored in this one.
The steelers are big, mean, fast, and they just keep hitting you in the mouth. They have been here before. On top of that the Pack has absolutely zero chance of running the ball. Spread offense against the Steelers… free blitzes by Polamalu, Farrior, Timmons, & clark. James Harrison is 100% killer.
and then you have Big Ben back there extending the play finding 6th round roookie wr for big time catches.
Good luck Pack. I know everybody hates Ben; I know everybody hates Brett farve, and that everybody wants Aaron Rodgers to win to get Farve off his back; i know everybody shudders at the thought of the Steelers winning their 7th superbowl…. but if you have the means take the points and enjoy the Steelers win today.

The talking heads make a big deal out of how Wallace stretches the field with his speed.
Sorta what we want out of DHB.
I thought DHB was faster then Wallace?
February 6th, 2011 at 8:33 am
yeah the part I liked about the hit was the camera showed Rolando Mclain on the side line chuckling while sproles was laid out…like this is a grown mans game.
All year Mclain kept saying the game was not too fast, and he proved it on that play. I
February 6th, 2011 at 8:34 am
Thats what you have to do in this league though. And thats what I liked when they played the Chargers. It was this ‘we’re not goin to take this B.S. anymore’ attitude. You could tell. They were punching them in the mouth and the Chargers had no answer – they were shocked.
You gotta bring that kinda raw bullying to the game every week. They were hitting the Chargers hard. Harder than I’ve seen in recent memory. And they won!
February 6th, 2011 at 8:35 am
Wallace is really fast. DHb is faster in shorts, but Wallace is faster with a football in his hands… by a wide margin. I have only seen DHb open all the cylinders once against Seattle. wallace seems to make a big play every week.
February 6th, 2011 at 8:39 am
Wait a min DickV. Spreading Pitts out is actually where they are the weakest. They do not cover well. Their run defense is the best in the league, but you spread them out (which also keeps Troy P. out of the backfield) they are weakest.
Everytime NE plays them, thats what they do – short slants, spread them out, and Pitts defense looks pretty average.
GB is the master of slants. No team in the league does it better.
I hope they win.

The contract of Washington Redskins wide receiver Santana Moss voids this week, five days after the Super Bowl, making him an unrestricted free agent whenever there is a new collective bargaining agreement, according to a league source.
Moss restructured his contract in 2009 and included a clause that said his contract will automatically void five days after Super Bowl XLV.
The 31-year-old Moss had a career-high 93 receptions in 2010, his first season with coach Mike Shanahan. He also had fourth career 1,000-yard season (1,115) and six touchdowns
February 6th, 2011 at 8:42 am
That is one thing that i saw from the Raiders d this year is they had the ability to bully the opponents… especially in the AFC west.
they tried in Pittsburg, but it seemed like the steelrs were able to take a punch and keep swinging like a real heavyweight champ.
I think the Raiders might actually have more talent than the Steelers minus Big Ben, and Troy polamlu, but the steelers are just too tough, and mean. Even players like hines ward will litterally slug you in the middle of a play. that is the difference. The raiders need to find players like hines ward for the offensive side of the ball. They need to be tougher.
The defense is ready: houston, desmond Bryant, mike mitchell, Mclain, Shaunassey can all play big boy football. tommy Kelly scares me because he seems like the type to get disinterested at the drop of a hat.

Look for Woodsen to have a tremendous impact as well. Pitts main faults to exploit are the OL and a weaker pass defense.
I dont think GB cares about running the ball to be honest. They may not even try at first.

terrapin raider… that spread offense sounds great until one of those guys Imentioned comes flying through the line unblocked and kills your QB… game over. Basically I see that approach as the equivalent of playing russian roulette… eventually that shot will come.
time and time agian we have seen that all qb’s suck when they get hit… except big ben; he seems to keep chugging along regardless of the protection issues.
February 6th, 2011 at 8:47 am
Leave my boy DHB alone. LOL. Just kiddin’. This will be a make or break year for him. He showed flashes in the season but he needs to step up year 3 for this offense to get even better. (And Campbell has to throw the damn ball his direction – goes both ways).
February 6th, 2011 at 8:52 am
Sorry dhb wont even make the team this year
February 6th, 2011 at 8:52 am
The one factor not to ignore is that during the press conference announcing Hue as coach, he talked about the nucleus of young talent on the team and Tyvon Branch was one of the first names out of his mouth.
We will find out about the whole “Cable wanted to cut MM34 thing” next year, but my money is on him still being a role player again.
February 6th, 2011 at 8:52 am
Its not just a spread offense I’m referencing ..its the quick hits. GB does this better than anyone in the league. They were running those quick slants with devistating effect under Farve and never skipped a beat. I don’t think blitz can get there in time if their WRs win.
I suppose you can scheme or shift coverage somehow to compensate for that blitzer but GB is really good at this.
NE runs the same game plan vs Pitts everytime they play and NE keeps winning. Spread them out, quick hits which keeps them out of thier base defense and out of your backfield
February 6th, 2011 at 8:52 am
to DHb defense. I rember back in 2006 i was going on before the season to some buddies how tired i was of Nnamdi. I thought he was decent, and was a round the football on some plays, but the bottom line is he made zero picks in 3 full seasons in the NFL. I thought the Raiders should have traded im that offseason… man was i wrong.
We have to take a wait and see approach with DHB; Al loves his scholarship players, and every once in a while they pay big dividends. DHB was decent this past year. I can’t remeber being disgusted with him last year. I rememebr one drop, but I remember several big drops by Murphy.
DHB needs to keep improving the way he did this year, and be ready for when JC throws him the ball.

You look at his resume and it is amazing.
True freshmen at Michigan, all-America Freshman team, eventual National Champion and Heisman trophy winner, 3-0 against Ohio State, and tons of huge plays in the national championship game.
Defensive ROY, multiple time pro bowler with Oakland, goes to the Pack and won defesnsive player of the year, again multiple pro bowls and maybe super bowl champion.
First ballot HOF, and I would put him as one of the best 50 players ever to play the game, when you consider both pro and college.
February 6th, 2011 at 8:55 am
Ironically, to knock GB off of those quick slants you need to run man-2-man bump in run coverage. LOL.
You have to knock their timing off.
But Steeler don’t run man-2-man …LOL …its laughable because that defense get sooooo much flax in here but its what you need to stop an offense like GBs. LOL.
JMHO.
February 6th, 2011 at 8:57 am
terrpin,
i beleive you need to be able to run the ball to win in the NFL/ superbowls. New England’s soft batched offense has failed them in three straight playoff games and Brady has looked bad three straight times because he has gotten a beating.
Teams figure that gimmick crap out. You give the steelers defense two weeks to game plan for that spread/ no run game, and they will kill it.
February 6th, 2011 at 8:59 am
DHB neutralizes all his speed with his inability to catch the ball fluidly on the run.
Almost all of his catches last year were with him stopped, facing the QB. He literally almost turned into a possession WR last year.
When he is running you get the AZ first play fiasco, and the Jax end of the game drop.
February 6th, 2011 at 9:01 am
Confucious does dHb have an option bonus do this offseason? Because outside of some crazy fat bonus that Al has to pay him, he will be a Raider for the next 4 seasons. Al has a long history of giving up on guys he drafted in the 1st round after only a couple of years.
Fabian Washington, Jamarcus, John Clay, Tyler Brayton, Marinovich, etc.
Wouldn’t suprise me at all if DHB went to 4th on the depth chart next year and waived the year after.
February 6th, 2011 at 9:03 am
Nah. I think they will run it. NE ran it, after they softened Pitts up with the pass. They didn’t try to run it first and then pass but pass and then run.
I watched that NE game and they made that same Pitts defense look pretty average. They kept hitting them with short accurate passes, then they started to run on occassion out of the shot gun.
Something’s tellin’ me you have money on this one?
I still hope GB wins. Just can’t stand Pitts talk anymore.
February 6th, 2011 at 9:05 am
just so we are all clear… DHB is not a good player; may never be. Just saying get used to him. Al had to relent on Jamarcus cuz of the Purple drank and he was fat. He had to cut his losses and move on. DHB is a hard worker who keeps his nose clean. He will be a Raider for the Next 4 years ( remainder of his rookie contract)… He will get snaps in most games over the next four years. I just hopes he makes a play every once in a while
February 6th, 2011 at 9:09 am
Fabian Washington, Jamarcus, John Clay, Tyler Brayton, Marinovich… never heard of clay.
Tyler was never the same after the steriod incident. Fabian had trouble with law/ domestic violence beating his wife. Jamarcus and Marijuanavich were both drug addicts.
DHb is a hard working young man who got paid too much $; he never caught the ball with his hands in his whole football career until a few games late in 2010. That Al’s fault for paying him; drafting him that high… he will be in Oakland.

Should be a great game.
Most people expect that GB will spread out Pitt’s D and be able to move the ball with their quick passing game, seem’s like a pretty good idea….except that Tomlin and LeBeau have had 2 weeks to prepare for such a gameplan, they will have an answer for it.
Of course, that doesn’t mean whatever Tomlin-LeBeau come up with will definitely work.
My guess is it will (work) to a degree, they won’t completely shut down Rodgers but even if GB moves the ball between the 20’s, they still have to get in the End Zone and that’s where they might be in trouble.
The Pats did spread out Pitt and kicked their butt, but NE also ran for 103 yards that day, the most allowed by them all year, so there was some balance from NE which prevented Pitt from going all-out after Brady and TE Rob Gronkowski had a great day.
I don’t think GB will run for a 100 yards today and they don’t have a big, fast, strong TE like Gronkowski to throw to.
In last year’s meeting, Pitt won 37-36, but GB had a great day from TE Jermichael Finley, 9 catches and a TD, he’s not around this time and Polamalu didn’t play in that game.
Now how about Pitt spreading out GB?.
Ward, Wallace, Sanders and Brown are dangerous too, Packers CB Tramon Williams is great, but C-Wood is no longer playing CB full-time, he’s moved around so he’s shadowing WR’s anymore, at least not all the game and nickel CB Sam Shields is a player, but he’s a rookie who has been playing the positions for 2 years (used to be a WR).
Add TE Heath Miller who can stay in-line so they have 6 blockers or go out in short routes and a big, fast do it all RB like Rashard Mendenhall who can run and it seems like an offense just a dangerous as GB’s if not more due to the threat of the run.
In fact, I think Pitt’s TE and RB are vastly superior to GB’s, Heat Miller and Rashard Mendenhall might be they key to this game.
Miller can catch and is a great blocker, if he’s on Clay Matthews, it’s close to an even matchup and Rashard Mendenhall just ran all over the NYJ defense, the best in the league outside of Pitt and that was with C Doug Legursky playing most of the game.
I’ve watched GB many times this year, on offense they tend to play in spurts, they look unstopabble on a couple of drives and then look real bad for a few series and their Defense does not look like a dominating unit to me, they’re good but they seem to be lacking something, a killer instinct maybe.
Because of what I just said, GB ends up letting opponets hang around in most games and when you’re facing Big Ben and it remains a close game by the 4th quarter, your chances are not very good.
I think Pitt needs to focus on taking Matthews out of the game, outside of him the Pack don’t have any dominant pass rushers, meanwhile GB has to deal with both James Harrison and Lamarr Woodley.
In the end, Rashard Mendenhall is the MVP, he runs well, helps Pitt deliver TD’s in the red zone and keep Rodgers in the bench just enough to diminish his impact, with Big Ben finishing the Pack in the 4th quarter.
Pitt 24, GB 20.

to DHb defense.
DHB needs to keep improving the way he did this year, and be ready for when JC throws him the ball.

i agree ,but i had ginen up on him.he shouldnt be starting ,but he does need game time to get better.up until a couple days ago i just couldnt figure out why he was still on the roster ,then i looked up tim browns stats and couldnt believe what i saw for his first 5 years ,very subpar, very very subpar ,even with his injury .and we all know how that turned out .i need to be more understanding on some things .but i still think if we are going to win more than 8 games next year we have to get some veteran leadership at the wide out spot ,otherwise we just dont have the people to do much better
