Biekert stays as LB coach _ still no DC
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, February 8th, 2011 at 2:02 pm in Oakland Raiders.
The Raiders announced Greg Biekert would serve as linebackers coach this season, but that doesn’t necessarily mean Chuck Bresnahan will end up being named defensive coordinator.
Although there has been no confirmation of an interview, it’s believed coach Hue Jackson is looking hard at Winston Moss, who served as assistant head coach and as a linebackers coach for the Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers. The Arizona Cardinals have reportedly requested permission to speak to Moss as well. Arizona and Tennessee are both currently without a defensive coordinator.
Moss has interviewed with the Raiders before and expressed a desire to work for Al Davis.
When Bresnahan was hired Feb. 1, it was without a specific designation. HIs experience is primarily with the secondary and linebackers aside from being a defensive coordinator and he could conceivably work in both areas with the nickel package should Moss come aboard.

Nothing personal but I hope Bres doesn’t get named D Coord.

Darren Perry might be a better option. I felt like even though Branch was one of our tackling leaders his coverage was a serious liability.

Not sure if i ever officially told you this but…
You were right about Darren McFadden.
You and the “Keepers of the Faith”.
In all fairness tho, my criticism of him proir to this year was justified by his play on the field.
I am so glad I was wrong about your boy Dmac.
Now DHB is next up to bat…
___________
Very little hope for DHB. He has never been a good player, not even in college.
Slightly below average is about the best we can hope for him.
Right now we are playing 10 on 11.

I’m pretty much ruling this board right now so…
Go Raiders!
Jerry, said it before, say it again, we are damb lucky to have you.
Seriously appreciated!
February 8th, 2011 at 2:10 pm
Dakota, it would be interesting to see what happens to DHB if we do aquire Chad Johnson especially if Schilens can finally get healthy.
Schil seems to be Oaklands best, most natural WR and finds the end zone.
He had a nice outro game against KC.
I like DHB but man, whats up with the mystery injuries and what not?
It’ll take more than one year of production from DMC for me to buy in.
He just can’t seem to stay healthy…
February 8th, 2011 at 2:14 pm
Bresnahan’s job is to answer the phone, when Al calls down during games…

Maine, Oakland, Cincy & Florida Tuskers
he’s been coaching since 1986 – thats 3 years before Rolando McClain was born!
hard to imagine him assisting guys like Biekert, Ross & Washington … who have only been ASSISTANT position coaches before joining the Raiders

I think we should just fire Breshanan.

from espn insider:
As the Jared Gaither saga continues to play out, it’s becoming more and more likely that he’s not in the 2011 plans for the Baltimore Ravens. If that’s the case, the team will need to make use of the draft, trades or free agency in order to find a solution at the tackle spot opposite Michael Oher.
Mike Duffy of BaltimoreRavens.com provided a roundup of some of the offensive linemen that could potentially be available this offseason (he included interior linemen, though this doesn’t appear to be as big of a need).
gaither-gallery-wisnieski-campbell-veldheer. on paper thats a pretty good line. henderson, satele, loper for depth, maybe keep walker and barnes around as well.
February 8th, 2011 at 2:27 pm
Gaither-Mankins-Veldheer-Wiz 2.0-Campbell sounds rather intruiging, although I don’t anticipate the shakeup on O Line most here predict.
Make it happen, Al.

The fact is, gallery and satele are free agents. campbell wasnt drafted to back up cooper carlisle. all signs point to some changes on the line, if we are going to keep any of our free agents, i have to think the offensive linemen are last priority b/c they are by far the most replaceable

LA that might be the best O-Line combination I’ve seen yet, and I ‘ve posted quite a few myself;
Gaither -Mankins – Vehldeer – Wisniewski – Campbell
I completely agrre with the Raiders going after Mankins, I really like the power that Vehldeer gives us at Center (should he remain at LT I would be okay with that as long as he improves from this season), Drafting Wisneiwki & starting Campbell at one of the tackle positions is key.
I hope we bring back Barnes, Satele, and Loper for depth and some continuity.

Moss began his coaching career in 1998 as a defensive quality control assistant for the Seattle Seahawks. He was hired by the New Orleans Saints in 2000 as defensive assistant/quality control, he was promoted to linebackers coach near the end of that season to replace John Bunting, who departed to become head coach at the University of North Carolina. Moss was hired by the Packers to become their linebackers coach on January 19, 2006. He was promoted to assistant head coach by head coach Mike McCarthy on January 15, 2007. Following a disappointing 2008 season for the Packers, Moss was the only major defensive coach not to be fired by McCarthy.[1]

Did Bon Jovi turn Davis down, too?
On Sunday, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported that rocker Jon Bon Jovi could be purchasing 15 percent of the Atlanta Falcons, a transaction that could be worth up to $150 million.
Bon Jovi has since clarified his interest in becoming an NFL owner, via a statement provided to Mortensen from Bon Jovi spokesperson Tiffany Shipp.
“Since helping to establish the Philadelphia Soul Arena Football team — from its inception through our 2008 championship season — I have always made clear my desire to someday enter the NFL,” Bon Jovi said, confirming that he had been in “confidential negotiations” since being approached by the Falcons “some months ago.”
The bigger question, in our view, is whether Bon Jovi could eventually aim even higher, especially since league rules require one person to own 30 percent of a team in order to be the majority owner.
Heck, if Jon changes his name to “Bon Rooney,” he might even be able to pull it off with only 15 percent.

I wonder why it’s hard for Al Davis to find a defensive coordinator. No respectable DC will step foot here. Up and comers like John Fox and Willie Shaw used to, but I don’t think even they want anything to do with the Raiders anymore. Why is this? Gee, where do we start? First off, there is no such thing as a defensive coordinator in Oakland. Al Davis is the defensive coordinator. This is well documented.
Secondly, the Raiders talent on D is designed for man defense. Modern day defensive coordinators were brought up to be deceptive and use varying shells, blitz packages, etc. You just can’t use 11 guys who only know how to bump and run. Sure, it’s swell if you’re playing a team that relies on the short pass. But in that case, what do you need a DC for? With a defense so vanilla, the players could run it.
Third: Tacking on to the first example, Al typically pits his defensive coordinator against his offensive minded head coach. Not only is a defensive coordinator a scapegoat in Oakland, Oakland is a place where defensive coordinators go to make enemies.
Breshnehan has been talked about for days. He’s no Bill Parcells. Yet these rumors just keep surfacing, with no closure. Could it be that even Breshnehan refuses to come to Oakland, and Al’s offering his shirt?

Not to, you know, trip you up in your daily dose of sunshine, but Bresh hire confirmed on this very blog and on the official web site AND in comments by Hue Jackson
http://www.ibabuzz.com/oaklandraiders/2011/02/01/bresnahan-officially-added-to-staff/
And so, my favorite nabob of negativity, the play isn’t to mock Al Davis for not being able to close with Bresh, but to mock him when he can’t land Perry or Moss and has to resort to Bresh as his saftey net.
Carry on.
February 8th, 2011 at 3:53 pm
Not that I think that will happen, BTW. Despite people working hard to make things in Raider land look bad, this team is a far more attractive situation than it was only a few years ago.
I think coaches may worry about the atmosphere that Davis creates, but what they REALLY worry about is will they have the pieces to succeed? Seymour, Asomugha, Wimbley, McClain, Houston, Kelly, and yes, Michael Huff.
A DC can make a name for himself with that squad. Moss or Perry will come.

Do you all know what the hell you’re talking about. “Obviously” Williamson doesn’t!
We MOVED AWAY FROM strict ZBS LAST YEAR under Hue!!! The running game took off!!!
The only guys that were brought in to run Cables system on that starting line is CC and Satale!
Furthermore, Hue run it all per Al Davis’ own admission. Now Hue balances out more on the power but nothing says he won’t run zone here and there.
I was shocked to read what Bill Williamson wrote and he is supposed to cover the AFC West teams? “OBVIOUSLY” he doesn’t pay attn to this team or he would know that. So should you guys!

Ha ha! Wow, Davy, I don’t know what to say. I really had no idea that we actually already signed Breshnehan, but to no particular position. Maybe with all of the world news I just missed it. And of course, like you guys, usually I hit this place and go right to the comments. Also, this is the ONLY source I use for Raider news, unless something happens that makes the mainstream headlines.
Now, that being said, and it’s a huge fail on my part, I’ll admit, LOL. Doesn’t it also go further to prove my case?
I mean, we sign Breshnehan, only to let him sit…while we look for a defensive coordinator? Oh, I think I know what his position is now. Official Team Bi*ch.
February 8th, 2011 at 4:35 pm
I’m embarrassed for Breshnehan. Wow. Talk about someone who’s desperate. Not only does Al have a knack for finding puppets around the league, he has a knack for finding guys with absolutely zero self esteem. I mean guys he can just scat on.
February 8th, 2011 at 4:36 pm
So if the Raiders DIDN’T run a ZBS last year, than that means Cooper Carlisle has been a 16 game starter for a top 5 rushing team in BOTH the ZBS and a power-blocking scheme.
He must be pretty damn good!!!
February 8th, 2011 at 4:41 pm
Biggest positions of need:
1. RT
2. OG (LG if Gallery leaves)
3. C
4. WR
5. CB (considering both starters are FAs)
6. C
7. S (if Huff leaves)
8. WLB
Luckily the draft has quite a few players who can play OG or RT.
Not a lot of clear “franchise left tackles” though.
I have a feeling that if Al is going to address the receiving corps this season, it’s going to be by bringing in another speedy mid/late-round project.
Satele improved over the course of the season, but is he a fit for a power-blocking scheme?
The WLB position could certainly be improved, but Groves and Goethel might get the first crack at the job. Both showed some potential last season. Still wouldn’t surprise me to see an OLB drafted, though.
I think there are some good options at free safety available through free agency if Huff can’t be re-signed.
CB is the biggest question mark. A lot depends on how free agency plays out.
Of course, this completely changes if the Raiders are thinking about going to the 3-4.
February 8th, 2011 at 4:43 pm
We have this wonderful power-blocking scheme that paves the way for the #2 rushing attack, and the only guy who started all 16 games and was also the least penalized O-lineman, is the one guy everyone wants replaced.

———–
This is key. I’d like to know how they found a balance. It’s also probable that Hue’s scheme won’t be 100% power-blocking. Most teams use at least a little ZBS.
Al didn’t seem too thrilled with the ZBS at his last press conference, though.
February 8th, 2011 at 5:17 pm
I don’t think its the Zone blocking scheme Al dislikes but, that it was what Tom Cable liked to run , Using the power and zone blocking schemes together is what works
February 8th, 2011 at 5:25 pm
Just have personnel that can run the o-line scheme.
BTW, Veldheer has NO BUSINESS being a Center. Backup or emergency? Absolutely! But not the starter.
I hated that Cable got slick with Veldheer and Bruce Campbell. Play the doggone players at the positions they know and develop some legit starters

Just keep the old one.
Al Davis just doesn’t get it. The Coordinators are trying to run their side of the ball. Shouldn’t they have INPUT into their staffs.

I think Al said so himself in his last press conference reguarding Cable that He (Mr Davis) is “not a zone blocking purist”

KoolKell,
Clearly Davis doesn’t value coaching as much as others in the league. Its as if he just sees these coaches as guys to coach technique….not a care in the world about strategy.
Are the assistants coaching the concepts that align with the way the Defensive Coordinator has set up his defense? If the DC wants to run more zone…are the coaches teaching zone concepts correctly…
I don’t know…..its tough when you can’t even pick your staff
February 8th, 2011 at 5:45 pm
Mack-Madden,
Yes, Veldheer played ok at LT. He should be spending 95% of his time sharpening his skills as a left tackle.
Not taking the kid and teaching him a NEW position all together.
I don’t understand why this team insists on just moving guys to totally new positions with a regularity.
Put Bruce at the freekn right tackle and see what he can do there…..just draft players that come in at least knowing their positions
February 8th, 2011 at 5:47 pm

February 8th, 2011 at 5:54 pm
You guys see one game with Veldheer at Center and make an automatic judgement on his capabilities there. Thats hogwash. That buffoon Cable completely f’d up that move to Center by NOT giving Veldheer the necessary practice in camp or during the preseason. That fool sat Veldheer the final game. Just stupid!!! And expected him to come out on fire like he was playing that position is whole damn career.
And you ppl are making a judgement based on that?????!!!! Get da f outta here!
When Satele went down sometime midseason, Veldheer sure didn’t look bad at center. Just saying. Mario being awful at LT put more emphasis on Veldheer taking that spot.
Still, all those false starts???? You think that’s coincidence??? He was OK, but he has serious faults. Gallery also was very penalty proned when he manned the LT spot. Just saying. Both short arms. Needed to compensate by jumping the snap. Just saying.
Whatever position he plays I hope he gets better. But I’m under no false assumptions that he was great at LT. He was much better than Henderson for sure. But not great by a longshot. Adequate is more like it.

I have no problem with insurance. But the Raiders go out here and play guys at new positions as full-on starters.
The only reason Veldheer was pulled is because Super Mario was jacking up the left side.
I also am ticked that Bruce Campbell basically sat all year. They could have got him out there. You tell me he was never a viable option at RT.
NO, we have him backing up a serviceable Carlisle while there was a big hole on the right side.

His off sides were attributable to rookie jitters aginst the Leagues best and fastest pass rushers. Pass rushers who NEVER got him more than once with the same thing.

And we all know that Mr Davis is highly upset that Bruce Campbell did not see the field.
Mr Davis is mad about “discovering” Jacoby Ford so late in the year.

109. Campbell had little actual football experience at ALL coming out of college and all of it at Left tackle.
He would’ve taken development time no matter where he landed but I think his move to RG was understandable as a Cooper replacement but negated one of his best attributes, that massive wing span and athletic kick which might’ve served him on the right edge.

It was better to have satele start at center.
Veldheer at LT.
I would have given Bruce Campbell some reps ANYWHERE (LT-LG-RG-RT-FB-or the khalif barnes 3rd TE role)
just so that he can get a feel for the speed of the NFL.
Maybe bruce wasnt ready at all, that I dont know.
But i sure wanted to find that out LAST YEAR
February 8th, 2011 at 6:13 pm
113. B Campbell DID see more field time than most fans realize.
Saw time in at least two games.
Not great.
One play good the next not so much and he’s a liability in protection. Too many times he’s on skates getting walked back into the QB.
Couldn’t anchor and needs more work than many think.
February 8th, 2011 at 6:14 pm
GoodOle00,
Honestly, if he is so far behind that he can’t even get on the field…I gotta wonder if he ever catches up.
Was he really THAT raw of a talent?
Damn!
Should have picked him even later than 4th if that’s the case.
And if he is that raw…should they be trying him at a new position (guard)? Especially with his speed and athleticism.
I hope he and DHB can turn all that physicality into real deal production.
February 8th, 2011 at 6:17 pm
He wasn’t even that impressive as a left tackle at Maryland. From what I saw of him, he relied a little too much on his strength and athleticism. Some plays he would leave his feet and lunge at the pass rusher. That kind of thing won’t fly in the NFL.
February 8th, 2011 at 6:20 pm
The only time I remember Bruce Campbell from last year, was when he was getting called for 3 penalties in a row during a preseason game, and when he was on kickoff return duties.

His comments about the blocking scheme are about as on-point as the ones about the 3-4, where he says we have the personnel to run it as our primary defense. Which, of course, we don’t.

A NT? Just take a South Sea Islander and tell him his job is to grab a couple of fat people and push them for a few seconds. Problem?
February 8th, 2011 at 6:51 pm
there was a couple of preseason games where bruce campbell was pushing his man five yards up field and he plays after the whistle. he’s gonna be fine at rt.guard. veldheer showed alot of potential at lt.tackle, he’s gonna get bigger and stronger.satele would get his butt pushed back behind the line of scimmage.(he’s a back-up)saw wiesnewski play against pouncey in the same game. pouncey is one of a kind maybe better than his brother, but wies. looked pretty strong and held his own against florida’s rush….
lets snatch him address the right tackle spot.don’t see gallery coming back, personally like to see a tougher meaner mauler. looks like chad johnson wants to come oakland , rather see vincent jackson
February 8th, 2011 at 7:00 pm
The Raiders ARE NOT built for a 3-4. McClain and Wimbley? Perhaps….but that’s it. The rest of backup players.
The DE has 4 starting caliber players across the board. Houston is already a contributor who is getting better…Seymour and TK are pro-bowl or near pro-bowl and Shaughnessy is a physical 4-3 DE that can get to the QB.
I am not anxious to see more Groves, Gothel and whoever else.
Mix in some zone and disguise the damn coverages!
February 8th, 2011 at 7:07 pm
Lonetree,
Not saying it can’t or won’t happen, just that the team as currently structured doesn’t look to me to be a 3-4 team. We put as much (and some evaluations would say more) pressure on the opposing QB than any team in the league last year, and our d-line is made up of guys that can be moved around to enable matchup advantages. As you mentioned, not a nose tackle in sight.
We may have a lot of linebackers, but are they any good? I noticed a significant dropoff when Ricky Brown spelled McClain, for example.
I think it’s bad timing to try and overhaul the defense. There are free agents to sign and an offensive line to address this offseason, and if we go whole hog (pun intended) with the NT thing and bring even more LBs in here we’re going to have to neglect one or both of those areas. Only so much money to go around, and only so many draft picks.
Now, if we already had the key FAs under contract, a viable o-line for the scheme, an AJ Hawk and could draft Clay Matthews and BJ Raji, I’d say go for it.
In my opinion, stopping the run is more about execution than it is scheme. There are more than a few 4-3 teams that do just fine in that area.
February 8th, 2011 at 7:09 pm
Teach,
Good post. Also, getting a GOOD NT is almost as hard as getting a good QB.
Those big guys are hard to come by and nearly all of the GOOD ones get franchised and big money to go with it.
Changing is too hard and the personnel isn’t really there.
Its a 4-3 team with more talent on the D-Line than the linebacker corps….a team that has difficulty coaching basic zone concepts let alone a switch to a 3-4!
February 8th, 2011 at 7:11 pm
Poor run defense.
Mediocre safeties, at best.
Mediocre offensive line, at best.
No possession receiver, no deep threat with hands or ability to fight for ball.
Quarterback who’s horrible under pressure, can not read blitz and find hot routes. Disqualifies a QB in today’s league, which is why Washington cut him loose.
A head coach who refers to his owner as “coach”, which doesn’t bode well when said owner is notorious for using head coaches as puppets.
No general manager, not even a cap specialist.
An owner who acts as GM, is 80 years old, and has displayed senile behavior publicly on several occasions in recent years.
And you guys are discussing whether we should use a 3-4 or a 4-3?
February 8th, 2011 at 7:12 pm
Congrats to Biekert!
However, lets hope this does not mean Bresnahan is next DC.
It would be a downgrade from Marshall IMO and that would mean what Hue said about hiring the best coaches possible, would blow up in smoke on one side of the ball IMO.
Lets hope Moss winds up being the next DC.
February 8th, 2011 at 7:15 pm
I forgot…an owner’s assistant who has also displayed bizarre and irrational behavior publicly.
An owner who fires his head coach after a 3 win improvement, and the team’s best finish in nearly a decade.

All the 3-4 talk baffles me. Better DL than LBs on the team, great 4-3 coach in Waufle, lots of sacks in ‘10. Discussion SHOULD end there.
All you Davis Bashers should love the “who knows what his job is” Bresh hire. It’s totally win win for you. If Al fails to land a DC from one of he SB teams, you can crow in triumph when we get the standard “he was our guy all along” speech; in the more likely event that he DOES land a DC from one of the SB teams, you can grouse about the mistreatment of Bresh in order to avoid giving Al credit.

No deep threat? Did we forget about Jacoby Ford? Or as good a squad of RBs as there is in the NFL? Or a great tight end? Or a DL with a mess of sacks? An offense that more than doubled their point total from 09 to 10? How about not one but several blow out victories? Undefeated in the west?
At some point, being a fan means finding something about your team to like. In the Shell/Kiffin/McCown era, if you told me “there’s nothing to like”, I’d have a harder time trying to argue the point. Now it’s a different story. Now if you can’t find something to like and be optimistic about, you’re willfully ignoring the Oakland Raiders of 2010. And I have to ask why a “fan” would do that.

Not necessarily true. Raider fans can at least run Al out of Oakland with effective boycotts, if they had the moral courage to do so. Then you have to consider the trouble Al would have finding a new home. LA does not want him, as don’t most cities. The other owners might finally tire of this thorn that’s been in their shoe for decades, and find a way to throw him out for good. There’s a lot of ways to get rid of Al. And Raider fans can do a huge part if they just stop buying into his deceptive marketing.

You ought to call it what it is on Chuck B. It’s Al Davis dysfunctional mgmt all over again. He’s bringing Chuck in because Chuck has always been loyal to Al and needed a job. Now Hue is going to have to find a way to get his DC while having to deal with finding a role for Chuck B. Al needed someone loyal to him to be his snitch just like Randy Hanson was. Good luck to Hue.
BTW, I dont think Hue is gonna want Moss around either. Hue would then have to worry about a guy that had aspirations to be a Raider HC.

I assume you mean NFL, not UFL, arena ball, etc.
But would you consider NCAA?
And would the name Bill Callahan with Nebraska be used as a valid (and ofcourse Lance Kiffin with Tenn/USC) example?

February 9th, 2011 at 4:52 am
WTF is going on in Tennessee? Fisher fires his DC then is fired himself a week later, after the owner went on record saying he would be retained. Then, new coach Munchak fires OC Heimerdinger, who was given an extension when diagnosed with cancer during the season. Their franchise QB is a friggin head case and the need a whole new coaching staff as most all other teams have filled their openings.

February 9th, 2011 at 7:22 am
Zorn is a west coast guy is he not? Believe Hackett is too, but he was here more in a ‘let’s teach JaMarcus how to actually play QB’ capacity, rather than system-wise.
Not crazy about the idea of Zorn. You guys read news outta Baltimore. General consensus is that Flacco slipped under Zorn and they really missed Hue.

February 9th, 2011 at 7:27 am
When Hue was in Baltimore they leaned on Ray Rice and the running game much more. This year with the aquisition of 3 brand new big name receivers they tried to turn into a passing team, and Flacco isnt that guy. I think it had less to do with Zorn than people think.
February 9th, 2011 at 7:33 am
Flacco played much better this year in the playoffs with Zorn than he did the previous two years with Hue.
I’m sure you can chop most of that up to growth and experience, but his playoff games under Hue were atrocious.
He had some Jamarcus-esque performances.
February 9th, 2011 at 7:35 am
Bcz, I know that’s the perception, however, Flacco actually had more completions/attempts in 09 than 10, however a slightly better TD-INT ration in 10.
February 9th, 2011 at 7:35 am
Ratio*
February 9th, 2011 at 7:38 am
I think Flacco’s biggest issue is his lack of big-game experience in college.
Going from Delaware to the NFL playoffs (on the road no less) is a colossal leap.
You see guys like Mark Sanchez, who is a much less talented and probably a worse regular season QB, step up his game in the playoffs. I attribute that to playing for USC and not being overwhelmed in the moment.
Flacco had his peeing his pants moment in the second half of the Steelers game.

it was pretty obvious to everybody that SF would bring in a new starting QB this upcoming season because they all stink and they’re all set to become FA’s … Harbaugh is doing his best to dispell that notion, but I doubt Capt Comeback wants to lose ballgames behind a pathetic QB when he was a pretty doggone special QB in his day and coached up the best guy at that position coming out next April (Luck)

He was Al Saunders chosen Qb coach at 2 of his OC stops, and since then he has been a QB consultant for college kids going into the NFL draft. His last 4 clients? Mack,
I’ve been on both sides of this issue
I dated a 19 year old asian chick when I was 16
I dated a 16 year old chick when I was 19, too.
neither one lasted more than a month or two … big maturity difference
couldn’t take the asian hottie to go dancing at a club. picked up the younger chick from school a few times – both felt weird (and sort of creepy)

Le’Ron McClain wants to see more time at RB, can lead block as a FB, and likes working with Al Saunders.
The Raiders need a guy who can be a lead blocking fullback, might need a “bruiser” change-of-pace back if Bush walks, and Al Saunders is the OC.
Almost makes too much sense. McFadden – McClain – Reece would be pretty awesome.
Still, I expect that if Bush DOES walk, his replacement will come via the draft. Sounds like the Raiders are going to try to retain him, though.

Palmer has told friends that he’s serious about following through on his threat to retire in 2011 even if the Bengals don’t believe him. His real estate agent, for one, believes “he’s not coming back.” Owner Mike Brown has now made it clear several times that he has no intention of trading Palmer. The sides are hunkered down in preparation for a Mexican standoff that could last the entire offseason.

Of people (not banks) in the Bay Area who sold their homes in December, 36 percent had to swallow a loss, selling for less than their original purchase price. Another 26 percent of sales were bank-owned foreclosures, which also sell for less than their original value.
– About 23 percent of Bay Area homeowners with a mortgage are underwater, owing more than their house is worth. San Francisco has the fewest underwater homeowners at 7.6 percent; Solano County has the most at 51.6 percent.
– Nationally, 27 percent of homeowners with a mortgage are underwater; for California the figure is 30.5 percent.

Scratch another team off the list. The Yankees are set in their infield, so he would have been a poor fit in the Bronx, anyway. Young could still be a useful player for someone, but his massive contract is going to keep most teams away.

Wonder if Al might take a chance considering he wouldn’t have to start right away? He could get at least 1 to 2 years on the bench with Campbell starting.

After a whole lot of speculation on Tuesday, the Cardinals have settled on their next defensive coordinator.
The team announced they hired Ray Horton, who was working as Pittsburgh’s secondary coach. Horton will keep Arizona’s primary 3-4 defense intact and look for ways to improve the team’s pass rush.
Ken Whisenhunt has accomplished a ton of great things in Arizona, but he’s unquestionably done a poor job building a consistent defensive appoach. This is Whisenhunt’s third defensive coordinator since 2008.
Horton, 50, has coached in the NFL 17 years. Most of them have been under Dick LeBeau. The Steelers reportedly denied Arizona permission to talk to Steelers linebackers coach Keith Butler.

Al Davis just missed on the Executive of the Year Award.
In one category, an award issued by Sporting News remains officially unofficial, primarily since the AP has no award for the category of executive of the year. Sporting News has spoken, and the winner is Falcons G.M. Thomas Dimitroff.
“I am thrilled for and proud of Thomas and his staff,” Falcons owner Arthur M. Blank said in a statement released by the Falcons. “Winning this award twice in three years is validation and recognition of Thomas’ many contributions not only to building a winning team over his first three seasons, but his unwavering focus and vision for this team’s future. He is truly deserving of this award.”
Other candidates for 2010 were — or at least should have been — Chiefs G.M. Scott Pioli, Buccaneers G.M. Mark Dominik, Jets G.M. Mike Tannenbaum, and Packers G.M. Ted Thompson.

You made some valid points.
His mobility is better than credited for.
His performance improved compared to the first part of the season.
But make no mistake, JaJason is still a bottom tier QB.
Reading through these posts, it occurred to me that virtually every HC or OC that had JaJason at QB was fired.
Thus, JaJason has the ‘non-continuity’ excuse, after 7 years in the NFL, to explain why he still looks lost on the field.
At some point one has to wonder whether any HC or OC can win with JaJason at the helm.
I seem to recall JaJason admitting after 4 games last year that he still wasn’t fully in command of the playbook.
At some point one has to wonder why JaJason can’t complete intermediate and deep passes with any consistency.
Is there a reason JaJason rarely even attempts going 15 yards downfield ?
Could the reason be that he knows he doesn’t have the accuracy or ability to read a defense in order to do so ?
Besides the laser to Murphy on 4th down that preceded Ford’s miracle catch that set up the game tying FG against KC, and Ford’s long reception in OT the same game — can anyone mention even a handful of JaJason pass attemps or completions over 20 yards ??
And please don’t use a 5 yard dumpoff to DMAC against JAX that wound up going for 70 as an example of JaJason going downfield.
JaJason will be under alot more pressure to get the ball downfield this coming season.
After the Colt game JaJason got a call from Al, asking him why the ball didn’t go downfield more. JaJason responded ‘they were playing alot of cover-2′.
JaJason will not remain the Raid starting QB for long if he isn’t willing to ‘let it go’ once in a while. And he won’t remain the starting QB for long if he doesn’t get results when he does attempt a pass longer than 15 yards.
Hue Jackson won’t keep his job unless JaJason produces or unless Hue benches JaJason.
I’ll be shocked if JaJason plays well enough to remain the Raider starting QB for more than half the 2011 season.
JaJason sucks.

I don’t like Jason Campbell facing the blitz. But then again, when you’re talking about Raiders quarterbacks, you have to consider game planning, offensive line, and surrounding talent, too, because the Raiders are perennially one of the worst teams in the league when it comes to cohesion, system, and execution. Campbell’s inability to read blitzes and find hot routes could very well be due to the Raiders’ offensive strategy having no answer for the blitz other than additional blockers. In other words, there may not be a hot route. Just 2 or 3 receivers and a tight end running 20 yards down field.

I know he’s got some serious off field issues, but a lot of what’s been said about his work ethic and approach to the game came from Raiders’ management, and they have not an ounce more credibility with me than Russell or any of his handlers.

I would love to pic up Shaun Rogers if we are in fact switching to a 3-4. Then we can draft a good prospect in the mid rounds of the draft to sub in, along with John Henderson. I think we would have a legit 3-4 if we get rodgers and one more NT type player: 325+lb nose tackle. Go get Darren Perry first though!
The comment I earlier said Seymour, Rogers, and Kelly as the 3 down linemen. The only thing I disagree with is I think Lamarr Houston would be the other starting DE from Seymour. Kelly could try to play NT (like Jay Ratliff in Dallas) or end, but he is best used as a pass rusher. IF we are going 3-4 I would consider trading Kelly to a 4-3 team line NYG or Vikings, considering his value is probably the highest its ever been. Maybe we could get a mid roud pick for him.
This is all IF and only IF we are switching to a 3-4.
The other train of thought is if it aint broke dont fix it. Our d-line was pretty darn good last season, so we could focus on continuing that and bringing in more Shaugnessys and Houstons through the draft.
Thats what the NYG do so well and why they are near the top every season in defense. the go about 7 or 8 deep of quality defensive line players. Depth is a big deal.

Mike Tyson = overrated
Burt Sugar, universally regarded as top Boxing aficionado, rated Tyson as the #100 ranked boxer of all-time, and somewhere around #12 heavyweight.
Teddy Atlas said that King and his camp purposedly ducked Riddick Bowe and Ray Mercer because they knew he stood no chance, and they never wanted him to fight Holyfield.
February 9th, 2011 at 6:34 pm
6) Mike Tyson – Tyson was perhaps in his prime the ultimate pressure fighter, he had great power and speed in both hands and could take a very good punch. He was another D’Amato fighter like Patterson so he had great head movement. The reason that Tyson is not ranked higher is that he did not face great opposition in his prime.

Starting Monday the SF Giants embark on what will be another championship season.
Maybe the A’s could add another section of tarps to that gawd-awful place you call a baseball park.
February 9th, 2011 at 6:38 pm
3. Sonny Liston, 4. George Foreman, 5. Mike Tyson: I’ll hazard my best guess and list ‘em in this order, but we’re really talking about a single entity here: The Beast.
There have been other devastating punchers who wore the heavyweight-championship belt (see Nos. 2, 7 and 9), but these three epitomize the tough-guy mystique the heavyweight championship is supposed to stand for (sorry, Cassius). All three spent a good deal of their lives on the wrong side of the law (only Foreman was eventually able to turn things around), and all three delighted in terrifying opponents into virtual submission before the first bell. Not many authorities would rate this trio so highly, but I don’t think Liston and Foreman should be unduly penalized for succumbing to the Ali genius. Louis’s lightning fists might have knocked them out before they had a chance to get him first, but, with all due respect to the men listed below, I don’t think any of them could have done what Ali did — found the magic to beat Liston and Foreman. As for Tyson, his demonstrated lack of success against opponents who aren’t terrified of him makes him difficult to rate. Who’s to say whether, say, Joe Frazier would have been afraid of him? For purposes of this ranking, in any case, I’m talking not about The Mouth That Gored, but about the Cus D’Amato Tyson, the perpetual-motion buzzsaw who didn’t stop until the opponent fell. The slow, lazy, don’t-mind-being-hit Mike Tyson who was undone by Buster Douglas and Evander Holyfield certainly would have been undone by Gene Tunney and Jack Johnson, but the real Mike Tyson, Cus’s perfect synthesis of Liston and Patterson, was an awesome specimen indeed. I think even an unafraid Holyfield would have been knocked out by this fighter.

Bert Sugar has him #14.
Is “Boxingnews24.com” in the boxing HOF as a writer?
Mercer, Bowe, Michael Moore, even the Tommy Morrisons, Chris Byrd’s, and Bert Cooper’s he ducked.
Instead he made a name knocking out Bruce Seldom and Peter McNeeley.

Saying JaJason was the reason the Raids won 8 games is like saying the Ravens won a SB because of Trent Dilfer.
I’m not saying JaJason didn’t play decently in several games. He did. I thought his best game was the first SD game. Those 2 long 4th qtr drives were beautifully executed (even if JaJason didn’t do much with his arm), and truth be told, that game saved the Raider season.
JaJason did play well in several games. JaJason is at his best when he just has to manage a game, and is NOT being relied upon to make a play.
If you’re going to ask JaJason to be a playmaker, it’s simply not going to happen.
And if you want to be more than mediocre in the NFL (unless your team has a dominant defense), you need a playmaker and leader at QB.
That’s NOT JaJason.
JaJason was absolutely PATHETIC against Tenn, StLou, SF, Pitt, and 90% of the first KC game.
JaJason either can’t or won’t get the ball downfield.
I’m reluctant to criticize JaJason for being ‘Captain Checkdown’. I prefer JaJason checking down and hoping someone else will make a play, rather than watching his offtarget passes getting picked.
A man’s got to know his limitations and JaJason clearly knows his.
Doesn’t mean I’m going to accept him as starting QB, the Raids and Raider fans deserve better.
JaJason sucks.

Vegas,
Post 431 you say JC padded his stats with a bunch of meaningless 4th qtr stats vs Indy. That drives me crazy.
That Alex dude always acts like the Indy game was a blowout, because JC sucks and the Raiders can’t play with NFL big boys.
I say BS. The Colt game was not a blowout loss by anymeans. That game was very competitive. Look it up.
It was 17-16 midway through 3rd qtr. 24-19 early in the fourth. The Colts scored with 7 mins left to go up by two scores. Campbell led the raiders to a TD to pull within 31-26 with two minutes to go.
The Raiders were going for an onside kick with 1:50 left, down by 5. That is not a blowout loss with meaningless stat padding going on, in my book.
Add to that that the Seymour-less defense couldn’t stop the Colts ground game all day. JC was not the reason they lost.
You and that Alex joker act like it was 31-10 and JC added a couple of late scores to make it look closer than it was. That just isn’t accurate, or fair.
February 9th, 2011 at 6:59 pm
I just don’t know where a “Raider Fan”, of all people, with the worst QB play and stinkiest franchise over the last 10 years, get’s off blaming a 8-5 QB?
February 9th, 2011 at 7:01 pm
JC is far from perfect, but until further notice he’s the “unquestioned starter”. Carson Palmer and Vince Young are not coming to Oakland.
For now, all we can do is hope that Campbell continues to improve in the Raiders’ system, and that the Raiders put more talent around him.
February 9th, 2011 at 7:01 pm
The reason that Tyson is not ranked higher is that he did not face great opposition in his prime.
==============================================
Works both ways.
He might have been exposed and ranked lower had he faced better opposition.
IMO, Tyson was a great puncher, but not much more.
For a few years it was a KO parade, but after Buster and Evander – Tyson showed absolutely nothing.
Tyson was a force of nature that burnt out kind of quickly and once his KO power dissipated and opponents could survive his onslaught he displayed little of the requisite skills to be regarded as an all time great.
He was fun to watch though.

February 9th, 2011 at 7:11 pm
Buckeye,
Watched the game live and now am looking at the play-by-play right now.
4th quarter:
24-16 and we get a pick at the Indy 35. One completion, one incompletion, sack, 3 points.
Get the ball back after an Indy TD with 8 minutes to go now down 31-19.
Two checkdowns for 8 yards, two incompletions, turnover on downs, zero first downs.
Remarkably, the Colts go nowhere and punt, up 31-19 with 5 minutes to go.
Soup goes down the field and throws his only TD of the game. Failed onside-kick and ballgame.
He got his only TD, 9 of his 23 completions, and 93 of his 231 yards on that last drive.
Prior to that last mostly meaningless drive, he was 20 of 32 for 138 yards and no TD’s.
Ends up 29-42 for 231 and 1.
Junk time stats.
http://scores.espn.go.com/nfl/playbyplay?gameId=301226013&period=4
February 9th, 2011 at 7:14 pm
Against Indy,
1. Jacoby Ford had a KO Ret for TD.
2. Seabass made a 59 yd FG so that’s really on the ST.
3. In the 4th Qtr, we got a turn over and started at Indy 37 which ended up with another FG.
That’s a total of 13 points by ST and D. Our offense scored 13 points and 7 of those was late in the game with the Colts playing prevent D.
So yeah, JC’s lousy performance was masked by the final game stats. Dig a little deeper and you can see he didnt do crap. Even Al Davis called his ass up to explain what happened.
I’ve been saying all season long. You dig a little deeper into the game and JC is no where to be found.
February 9th, 2011 at 7:19 pm
KK,
I see you are still ducking my question. How did JC earned that win against STL?
BTW, I still see the same delusional and incompetent QB out there in JaPanic. Had he been a mediocre QB, we’d be in the playoff. I’m sick of excuses made for him. Aaron Rodgers did pretty well on a day that his team abandoned the run in the biggest game of the year. How did JC do offensively on a day that DMAC or Bush couldnt get it going?
February 9th, 2011 at 7:20 pm
2011 is all Soup, we shall see what he does with his opportunity.
No excuses. Same year in the system, same OC he had earlier in his career.
Coming off an 8-8 year, 6-0 in the division.
Anything less than 9-7 is unacceptable.
February 9th, 2011 at 7:20 pm
Like I said at the time, I blame the Indy loss on Al Davis. Passing the ball 42 times while DMac/Bush sat around and watched.

February 9th, 2011 at 7:23 pm
A real QB handles the pressure well. That’s the difference between a legit QB and an impostor. JC can’t handle the pressure. That’s why he can never carry the team. As the QB you have to carry your team. Never have and never will.
Proof?
JC 2 min drill vs the Lions 2009.
JC 2 min drill vs Jax 2010.
Exact same scenarios and he dumped off both times to end the game.

February 9th, 2011 at 7:32 pm
How could the Raids manage 8 wins with JaJason at the helm ?
Simple.
JaJason was buttressed by the NFL’s second ranked rushing attack.
In games where the Raider rush was limited and the onus was on the passing game, JaJason couldn’t pick up the slack.
Don’t ask or expect JaJason to make a play with his arm or score points through the air – bcz it’s not happening.
I hope JaJason proves me wrong in 2011.
February 9th, 2011 at 7:33 pm
Sorry fellas. But, I’m not buying it. I contend to blame that loss on JC is unfair. The Colts won both sides of the LOS.
For whatever reason the Raiders were unable/unwilling to run the ball. For some reason the Colts seemed to be able to “switch” on the run D late in the year after being ranked dead last most of the season. I believe they shut down MJD and the Jags the following week. Then, Freeney and Mathis had their way with the Rook and Langston Walker.
Plus, his critcs say he can’t or won’t throw the deep ball and is content to checkdown, I believe that is the game he threw a perfect pass 35-40 yds downfield. Ball went right through Murphy’s hands.
There are no moral victories and the bottom line is they didn’t get it done. The had to be deflated finding out just before kickoff that they’d been eliminated. They were game. They were not routed and gave the Colts hell. To imply that it was a route and JC just padded his stats in a meaningless 4th qtr is wrong.
That’s my opinion and I’m sticking to it. lol.

I’m not blaming that loss on JC by no means. I blame that loss squarely on Hue Jackson’s game plan of abandoning our ground game and best offensive player DMAC.

Buck,
I don’t blame the loss of the Indy game on Soup. Lack of a running game was a deviation from our style of what was successful.
I just won’t buy that he played well. He got a ton of opportunities, a couple of turnovers on the other side of the 50 and did squat with them.

Haha it’s entirely possible. Or he’ll be the first successful QB the Raiders have drafted since Stabler. Crazier s**t has happened.
If the Raiders have another good draft that helps solidify the offensive and defensive lines, it’ll be a lot easier for a QB to succeed here.

I’m probably a lil overly sensitive to how the Raiders are portrayed and reported on by the media, especially BSPN.
Ii always complain that they get ripped, but did anybody else see the Raiders get a lil love on BSPN today?
The question was …which new coach in ‘11 will have the greatest chance at success. Bruschi said Jason Garrett. He said he liked what he saw as an iterim coach.
Antonio Pierce said our boy Hue. He actually called them the LA Raiders, though. Freudian slip, perhaps.
Pointed out they went undefeated in division and have a nucleus of good young talent. Bruschi even agreed with him.
Just thought I’d throw that out there.

I don’t think JC sucks. I think you can win with him, and I hope he gets better in his second season in Oakland. Hopefully, being the unquestioned starter will cause his confidence to grow and let him “turn it loose” more often.
That is the one reservation I have about JC, though. And it’s a big one. Not sure if it’s entirely fair.
It seemed JC played alot better after Grads went down, and he didn’t have to look over his shoulder any more. I’d like to believe in the old sports axioms like competition bringing out the best in people. Iron sharpening iron as Mike Tomlin puts it.
If Bruce Gradkowski breathing down his neck causes him to wilt under pressure, then can he really be trusted with all the chips on the table in a big game situation? I don’t know.
It’s a perception I have and can’t shake. I hope I’m wrong. Maybe that’s where Al’s Plunkett reference comes from. Like Jim, he’s been beaten down and his confidence shot. Hopefully he can rebuild his career in Oakland like El Jefe did. I’m pulling for the guy.

The thing that makes me most nervous about Oakland this year is what will happen in free agency. We were 8-8 last year, winning some games in which we played poorly, losing some games we easily could’ve won.
With status quo, player-wise, Things could go well. Jackson would be better than Cable as far as gameplanning goes, and giving a more advanced system. I think we will lose a lot of the FAs. All I know is that the schedule will be tougher, and JC will have to play better against pressure–it’s pretty much a given that he is starting. All this is obvious, I just wanted to talk Raiders on my firs post in forever.
My real question is to Buckeye Raider—
Who will by the Reds leadoff hitter? Should be Lewis, but if that flops (like WillieT, Patterson) who goes there? Who will be 5th starter? Wood looked more consistant than Leake last year, and Leake has the bat to make him a good bullpen guy. Will the left side of the infield really survive with Janish/Renteria and Rolen/Cairo (Though Janish will always be solid in the field)? Who makes 25 man: Heisey or Hermida? Wouldn’t it be nice to have Francisco around for our olda$$ 3Bs? Other than those questions, I’m also excited about Reds Spring Training and potential for the year.

Looking at some individual stats (in their category) on NFL.com. Darren McFadden came in @ 6th overall (missing 2 games), Zach Miller (missing 1 game) @ 10th, Jano @ 1st and Raiders Defense @ 7th…not bad!
Hopefully next year we could get our QB and WR’s in the top 10!

We are close. If our QB and WR’s were in the top 16 we would be contenders. But with JC we are pretenders.

Damn Bro. That’s alot to throw at my slightly inebriated brain at 10 til midnight. lol.
I don’t know who’s going to bat leadoff. Seems like they have a neverending search for a leadoff hitter.
They need a quality platoon for Rolen at 3rd. I though his veteran leadership was invaluable to that young team last year. But with his age and back he faded badly down the stretch and in the playoffs.
Saw where they lost Sir Arthur Lee Rhodes. That kinda sucks. That guy was money outta the pen.
Love their young pitching and can’t wait for beisball seaon.
I have three lil girls. They all play softball/t-ball. We signed em up for lil Reds Rooters. Went to five games last year. The 3 of em in the van singing “take me out to the ball game” on the way to GABP was a blast. Hope to do it again this year.

When an Aaron Rodgers-caliber QB is available to the Raiders, then there will be a point to this discussion.
Until then? All the Raiders can do is continue to put more talent around Campbell and hope his play improves.
^^^^^^^
Exactly. There is no point to argue about the Raiders being able to get an elite type of QB. There are NONE out there to be had.
Until the Raiders get lucky by drafting one or finding a actual FA who would be considerably better than JC….there is no point in wasting time arguing about it. The team just has to continue to add talent and depth on defense and on the O-Line. Hope to get a TRUE #1 WR and a backup TE for Miller.

Although do they still owe draft picks for the Groves or Wimbley trades? I’m trying to find the Raiders’ draft order online and I can’t seem to track down anything
^^^^^^^^
How about the Raiders go with bloodline legacy picks with their 1st two picks by going with:
RD 1- Wisnewski C
RD 2- Matthews LB
That seeing those guys be the first two pick for the Raiders on draft day would be get me pumped!
February 9th, 2011 at 10:18 pm
I don’t get all the hate on Jason Campbell.
Remember where he’s coming from:
In 4 years starting in Washington, Campbell had to learn 2 completely different offensive systems, while playing under 4 different play-callers (the vertical “Coryell” based offense used by Joe Gibbs and Al Saunders and then the “West Coast” offense ran by Jim Zorn and Sherman Lewis).
If you go even further back, he had four offensive coordinators in four years at Auburn.
It would be hard for any QB to survive so many changes, let alone post decent numbers, as Campbell has done so far.
- Now with Hue Jackson as HC and play-caller and a familiar face in Al Saunders as OC, Campbell will finally have the chance to build on something.
A 6-4 record as starter while learning yet another new offensive system is a decent start, specially with such an inexperienced WR unit and an OL that was up and down most of the year.
Look, I don’t know if he can become a top notch QB in this league…but I do know he deserves a chance to prove himself.
Let’s just wait and see what he can do in year 2 under Hue and hopefully, with some better WR play and pass-protection.

Buck just my opinion but what you saw from Campbell was his reaction to his coaches preferential treament toward a certain QB over him. If the competition was fair and unbiased he would blow the little hero away. He saw how much they wanted Grads to play well and critizied him. It even started to split the lockeroom from what I heard.
It also took Campbell longer to get in some kind of rythum with thet team due to the yoyoing once he did you saw what he could do.
February 9th, 2011 at 11:40 pm
Marley it’s really simple you have a segment in here who are born and bread haters and then you have those who just love the “little hero”. One guy swore that Campbell would prove that he was a fraud and until this very day he has not admitted that the fraud is actually him.
The Haters are the ones who hate anything and everything that comes from Mr Davis (they don’t know that the entire team comes from him). But they congregate and pat eahc other on the back as if they know something no one else does. Ya know the young group of know it alls (who quite frankly don’t know squat).
So there the Grads lovers and the Al Davis haters all bunched together in one happy family.

I agree that Campbell seemed to play a lot better without Grads behind him.
What I don’t get is that Campbell was benched after a bad half a couple times – most notably at St. Louis and Pittsburgh. So why wasn’t Gradkowski benched after an ineffective start to the Miami game?
February 10th, 2011 at 2:25 am
Grads should have been benched at the half vs. Mia.
Not only was he playing poorly, it was obvious his shoulder still wasn’t right.
He never should have started that game to begin with.
But it’s revisionist history to even suggest that JaJason didn’t deserve being benched after his start in Tenn and then the first half against the Rams.
He sucked in Tenn (who can forget ‘the slide’, and the kneel ?), and was playing just as poorly against the Rams.
Grads had clearly outplayed him vs. SF in the pre-season. The team appeared energized and was responding better to BG.
What did you expect Cable and Hue to do ?
Stand pat with JaJason and start the season 0-2, losing at home to the team with the worst record in the NFL the previous year ?
You’ve got to be kidding.
The move to bench JaJason and go with Grads was absolutely the right one and paid off with a win.
In fact, JaJason looked so bad and the uplift with Grads was so noticeable that Cable didn’t hesitate to name Grads the starter the rest of the way.
The only reason JaJason got to start again was bcz Grads got injured.
I’ll say it again — if Grads doesn’t have a Matt Stafford shoulder condition and returns to 100% health, he’ll outplay and beat out JaJason again.
Laugh all you want and smugly believe that JaJason is the superior QB.
Make all the ridiculous excuses you can for JaJason now.
He plays better without someone looking over his shoulder.
He hasn’t had any continuity.
Bunch of crap.
Surprised anyone still buys into that nonsense.
Truth is JaJason is a 7 year vet, and admitted he still didn’t have full command of the playbook 4 games into the season.
Do you expect any NFL team not to carry a decent backup QB for fear that the starter can’t perform with someone looking over his shoulder ?
Ludicrous.
Anyone wondering why JaJason was benched after 6 qtrs of play wasn’t paying attention.
And anyone wondering why he got benched yet again must have missed the SF and Pitt games.
Unreal.

Rocky Seto set to become the Raiders new Defensive Coordinator in 2011 …
February 10th, 2011 at 4:52 am
I agree that Bruce should have never started the Miami game, but to say we should have benched him at halftime is ridiculous.
At the half, he was 7-10, 113 yards 1 TD, 1 INT, 87 QB rating, his last pass was a 44 yard TD and we were winning at the half.
Maybe they could have pulled him after that INT in the end zone midway through the 3rd quarter, but at the half things were looking good.
February 10th, 2011 at 5:36 am
Bruce Gradkowski wasnt at fault for our loss to Miami, he was a contributor but I wouldnt lay the blame totally at his feet. Our defense could not stop miami on third down. Chad Henne shredded our secondary like wet toilet paper. Our offense as a whole couldnt keep the ball moving, our longest drive of the day was 7 plays. It was a let down by all 53 guys.
February 10th, 2011 at 5:46 am
JFB, those are decent enough stats. Didn’t remember it that way. Thought BG was playing worse than those stats indicate.
Wheels really fell off in the 2nd half though.
That pick in the end zone was ridiculous. BG has Ford streaking up the sideline wide open. Instead of just letting the ball go and showing good timing, BG hesitates and winds up having to make a longer, more difficult throw into a recovered defense.
There were already several throws that day that indicated that BG wasn’t right, but that one really sealed the deal.
You’re right, that would have been the perfect time to pull him.
February 10th, 2011 at 5:51 am
Not sure why Hue called that end zone play for Bruce.
1st and 10, one score game, across mid-field and just had a nice run for a first.
And with Bruce and his below-average deep ball, Hue dials up a long-winding bootleg, with a 5′7 WR trying to beat the cover 2. Would have liked to see a taller WR on that play, maybe could have broken up the pass.
Of course Ford was wide open for a second or two, because the D and Safety knew Bruce didn’t have the arm strength to make it hurt them. Their D knew it, and most of us know it, but Hue apparently didn’t.
Either way, Bruce had TONS of open-field in front of him, he could have just jogged to the sideline for close to another first down, and that’s what he should have done. His inferiority complex of always trying to make a play killed us, and killed the momentum of the game we had at that point.
February 10th, 2011 at 6:05 am
Good Morning Nation!!!
Like I said last night…folks are still in here arguing the JC vs BG thing…let it go! BG is a warrior and has a good heart, but if you’re content with him backing up JC this year…then be it! I’m not! Sure, BG will probably outplay JC again in preseason and maybe into the season…but really really really DO NOT want to see a QB FN carousel again! And I DO NOT back JC! And yes he did play better down the stretch…yes, if he was even half Brady, Manning, Big Ben, etc., we probably would have snuck into the playoffs, but it is what it is!

By the way, I like Gradkowski as well, he’s the rare backup QB who can enter the game at any point and not turn it into a disaster, he can even give the team a lift sometimes.
But we do need to find a young 3rd QB with potential who can be developed, it’s pointless to carry a guy like Kyle Boller.

Hopefully, Al Saunders will get a chance to work on the WR’s too, maybe Sanjay Lal can learn a thing or two from the guy.

Washington Redskins Outside Linebacker – Rocky McIntosh
Want an indication that the Raiders are going to remain a 4-3 defense with a 4-3 line coach and a 4-3 linebackers coach? Well if they are, this guy could be a Raider in 2011. McIntosh was taken 35th overall in 2006 by Washington. In 2007, McIntosh set career highs in tackles (105), sacks (3), and forced fumbles (3). On December 16, 2007, McIntosh tore both the ACL and MCL ligaments in a 22-10 victory over the New York Giants after bending his knee awkwardly in a pile in the first quarter.
In 2008, after being put on injured reserve the previous season, McIntosh recorded 87 tackles, two sacks, an interception, and two forced fumbles. In 2009, McIntosh finished the season with 94 tackles (64 solo), two interceptions, and two forced fumbles. In 2010, McIntosh, much like teammate Albert Haynesworth, didn’t fit the Redskins new 3-4 defense… go figure.
Minnesota Vikings Outside Linebacker – Chad Greenway
Greenway will be another indication that the Raiders are sticking to the 4-3 scheme. Greenway was a first round pick by the Vikings (17th in 2006) and fits well in the scheme for newly appointed Head Coach Leslie Fraiser. There is no indication that Greenway wants to leave or that the Vikings will let him leave. But hands down money talks; if Al Davis wants him enough, he’ll be an Oakland Raider in 2011.

San Diego Chargers Wide Receiver – Vincent Jackson
Call it bittersweet, but there is something about taking a 6′5″ 230-plus pound wide receiver who runs a 4.46 forty in the prime of his career away from a divisional rival like San Diego. Jackson made Philip Rivers look awesome just a couple of years ago. This guy is a freak and Al Davis loves freaks of nature.
Amazingly enough, Jackson hasn’t had a season with more than 68 catches, but he is a nightmare for defenses as a deep threat. Dude averaged 17.2 yards per catch in his five year career with the Dolts. He posted back-to-back 1,000 yard seasons in 2008 and 2009 and went to Hawaii as a Pro Bowler. And then the San Diego Chargers dumped on him. Long story short (basically the same as Mankins), on October 29, 2010, Jackson ended his hold-out and signed a one-year tender for $583,000. The deadline to sign and accrue a full season, so that he would be an unrestricted free agent in 2011, was October 30, 2010. But Jackson didn’t see much field time with the team in 2010 and it’s looking as though his time with the Chargers has ended.

Jacksonville JaguarsAfter Joe Gibbs retired, Williams was considered to be the most popular candidate to take over as Head Coach of the Washington Redskins. He interviewed four times with team owner Dan Snyder. However, on January 26, 2008, Williams was fired, along with Assistant Head Coach–Offense Al Saunders.[6] On February 6, 2008, Williams became the new defensive coordinator of the Jacksonville Jaguars. The position was vacated by Mike Smith who was hired to coach the Atlanta Falcons.
[edit] New Orleans SaintsWilliams was hired by the New Orleans Saints on January 15, 2009. Head coach Sean Payton, who was heavily involved in the effort to recruit Williams to the team, raved about Williams “because he was so impressive and prepared” in his interview. In fact, Williams was so impressive that Payton offered and took a voluntary $250,000 cut in salary to help facilitate his signing with the team. He took over a Saints defense ranked 23rd in the NFL in yards allowed and tied for 26th in points allowed in 2008.

Kansas City Chiefs GM Scott Pioli made an appearance on The Border Patrol, a program on Sports Radio 810 this morning and once again demonstrated his keen ability to talk for an extended period of time without saying anything at all.
For the record, I am a Pioli fan. I didn’t like his 2009 but if 2010 was a result of the groundwork laid by the organization in 2009, then I think 2009 was worth it. I don’t like to spend too much time judging Pioli’s methods because I don’t need to. In the end, Pioli will be judged by what the Chiefs do on the football field. If they continue to win, Pioli will be primarily viewed in a favorable light. If the Chiefs start taking step backwards…well, you get it.
I know some of you are bothered by Pioli’s secretive manner. I can understand that. Does the organization need to keep even the smallest things a secret? Do they really get a huge advantage over their opponents by shrouding themselves in mystery?
I don’t know. I really don’t know how much it helps or how much of it is really necessary. I mean I cover this team. More information from the Chiefs would make my job easier and possibly more fun at times. That being said, I’m also a fan and what I really care about is what the Chiefs do on the field. Trust me, nothing would make my job easier or more fun than deep playoff run topped with a trip to the Super Bowl.
That being said, Pioli gave a rare “interview” today and I managed to catch most of it.
After the jump, I’ve got a few quotes from KC’s GM.
On how far the team has to go to reach the level of the Packers and Steelers:
We had an improved season but there is still al long way to go for this football team.
Depending on which part you look at, I’d say that we’re a good ways from those teams.
On the depth the Packers have:
Their first line players are very good but when they have injuries and or problems with their roster, their depth is enough to sustain any problems that they have.
On his philosophy on defense:
Defense wins championships. Offense just tells you by how much.
Pioli was pretty vague when asked about the contracts of Dwayne Bowe and Tamba Hali. He said he didn’t want to get into it as it is a personal matter for both players but he did say that the organization likes having both players and that they will continue to take steps to get things worked out. He also mentioned that there are plenty of other players (no one specific) that the team needs to work out deals with.
On the CBA:
It’s business as usual until we find out what the deal is.
Basically Pioli said everyone is in the same boat, meaning all 32 teams. He said the organization is approaching things as they normally would while obviously paying attention to the fact that the situation could change very quickly if a deal is not worked out by March 4th.
On the progress of Matt Cassel:
His performance improved. He was very well coached by the staff and he improved. He also had players around him that improved.
We see the needle heading in the right direction with Matt.
I have great confidence in the coaching staff. It’s never about one person.
Diplomatic answer from Pioli. He said Cassel is certainly improving but also credits the players around Cassel for aiding in that development. He also eluded to the fact that it is a team effort and that it wasn;t necessarily just one person (Charlie Weis) who helped improve Cassel’s play.
On offensive coordinator issues:
People speculating on the relationships of other people…I think it’s generally unfair unless people know the facts.
Coaches coach and GM’s manage the organization.
More diplomacy. Seriously, Pioli could probably run for president or he could at least get a job working for the CIA. He basically said that the speculation about Haley being difficult to work for is all BS because those doing the speculating don’t really know what they’re talking about. He has a point there but that doesn’t change the fact that unless he tells people what is really going on, they are going to speculate until the cows come home. If Pioli is going to be so secretive then he is going to have to deal with the fact that people are going to try to figure out what is going on and that those theories may sometimes be off the mark or be negative.
The second quote above was part of Pioli’s vague response to a question about coaches calling their own offensive plays. He didn’t really get much more in depth than that.
On the draft:
We’re looking for everything and anything that makes this football team better. If we lock ourselves into one position you might miss out on a great opportunity. We will draft with a combination of need and best player available.
Well there you have it Addicts. What do you think, did Pioli say anything that even gives you the slightest clue as to what the Chiefs will do this offseason. Let’s speculate!
You’ll be able to hear Pioli’s full interview in podcast form at 810 Sports later today.

There is no denying that Joseph Barksdale (Link) is one of the best pure talents in this year’s NFL draft. Barksdale projects as a RT or even a serviceable LT. He has the measurables that the Oakland Raiders love because at 6′5 – 336 pounds he has been clocked at under 5.0 in the 40 and some say that he ran a 4.86.
The reason that some see him slipping to the 2nd round has more to do with his work ethic and motor questions. He hasn’t shown the killer instinct that many look for in a First Round O-Line candidate.
I know what some of you are thinking, “The last Unmotivated 300 pounder that we selected from LSU is still spending Al’s money and didn’t perform anywhere near expectations”.
In my opinion, Joseph Barksdale would be a fantastic pick in the 2nd Round, at this point. He is first round talent with a couple of question marks, which make him a viable option in the middle of the second round.
Follow the jump to read more about Joseph:
I have not heard anyone mention this, yet, but, Joseph graduated High School early and joined LSU after being named a High School All-American. Sometimes the more intelligent players in College are accused of not having a high enough motor and that may be the case with Barksdale.
CBS currently has him listed as the #9 OT prospect and they have him going in the third round. I am going out on a limb here and saying that he will impress at the Combine and be one of the Top rated O-Linemen available when the Raiders select.
A Five Star recruit coming out of High School, I think there is more to Barksdale than many scouts are seeing at this point and we all know that if we can get a 10 year starter on the O-line in this year’s draft, we will be heading in the right direction.

Mayock roasted Barksdale during the Senior Bowl game.
He said he maybe had the most to gain or lose during the week, and seemed disinterested in the first two days of practice and than said Barksdale announced he had a hamstring injury and didn’t practice or play anymore.
I remember Mayock saying himself and the scouts kind of questioned the extent of the injury.

To clarify my last post:
1.) I don’t blame Gradkowski for the Miami loss. The Raiders’ running game had stalled completely and the secondary had an awful game. But Grads was obviously injured and his play didn’t help.
2.) Campbell definitely deserved to get benched in St. Louis.

Although being the huge THE WIRE fan that I am, it would be pretty cool to get a player named Barksdale on the team.

Bruce was awful in the second half of the Miami game.
Things weren’t so bad in the first half, he had a TD pass and we were winning.
His career might have died an agonizing death in that second half.

How about the Raiders go with bloodline legacy picks with their 1st two picks by going with:
RD 1- Wisnewski C
RD 2- Matthews LB
That seeing those guys be the first two pick for the Raiders on draft day would be get me pumped!

Rd 6- K Reuland TE, Stanford

Though the San Francisco Chronicle has reported that Richard Seymour will be slapped with the franchise tag, NFL Network’s Jason LaCanfora expects the Raiders to use the tag on TE Zach Miller.
The Chronicle and LaCanfora are both citing sources. The Raiders may end up using both the franchise and the transition tag. If they do plan to franchise Miller, there’s a good chance they will lock up Seymour to a long-term deal. Miller, the most valuable member of the Oakland passing game, just turned 25 years old after four years in the NFL. It would be far less expensive to franchise a tight end than a defensive end.

DeMaurice Smith is a good American. We may not have football next year, but it’s for a good cause.
February 10th, 2011 at 12:05 pm
LA,
Teams can actually sign their own FAs now. The owners are essentially coluding(sp) in hopes that the new CBA is more favorable to them.
Seymour could be signed to a 3 year contract today. Just don’t know how his numbers would impact a salary cap.
If it were up to me, I’d take a run at Huff and Seymour now. They might bite knowing they might now get that much cheese after the new agreement.

Owners are the ones risking their money, they should get at least 60%.
When the Jamarcus Russell’s of the world just get high on the company dollar, screw up said company for a few years, and effect their profits, while his salary is all but guaranteed for awhile, there is something terribly wrong with that.
The players want 50% of the profits? Fine, play for one year non-guaranteed deals every year.
February 10th, 2011 at 12:25 pm
I wouldn’t call it tipping my hand.
*********************
Sure it is.
You slap a tag on a guy, and now he expects that in salary if those tags are removed in the CBA.
You going to tell Zack, “Hey I know we transitioned you at $5 million a year in Feb, but we don’t have to do that anymore, so how does $3.5 sound?”
That isn’t going to go over well, and just creates un-needed drama.
Do what you do best Al, take forever (or until after March) to do anything.
February 10th, 2011 at 12:30 pm
The players won’t be getting paid by the owners. DeMaruice Smith and the union, on the other hand, will give the players the shirts off their back if necessary.

Owners are risking money that they have loads more of, players are risking lifetime paralysis every time they step onto the field.
February 10th, 2011 at 12:38 pm
The players have been taking 50% for years and the owners want them to take, what — 18% less AND tack on 2 games while growing the sport, getting record numbers each year?

February 10th, 2011 at 12:44 pm
MR, I’m for players.
At least let them maintain the 50-50. Make them take less AND add two games AND make them travel the globe on short rest and they claim to care about player safety? Owners are trying to grow the sport at the expense of the players.
Football is by far the more popular sport, but contracts aren’t guaranteed and baseball players make 3-4 times more. Why? Less risk of injury and more games.
February 10th, 2011 at 12:47 pm
LA, I’m for players and owners. Owners win no matter what.

It’s weird how so many sports fans side with the owners in labor disputes. The owners get most of their dollar. And what do they get in return? Even higher prices at the stadium, which the players see very little of on the dollar. Sort of a masochist thing at work between sports owners and their consumers. Bizarre. Some people just need to be abused.
February 10th, 2011 at 1:00 pm
The owners can end this any time they want to, Purple, and get things back to normal. DeMaurice can’t afford to budge, because too much is at stake on his side. The owners can, however. And, indeed, it is a shame that their greed makes them so reluctant to do so.
February 10th, 2011 at 1:02 pm
PD81,
I agree, but at the same time, if you want the madness to stop, you have to stop watching and supporting the business.
It’s gotten to this level because of corporate greed and a very, very succesful, popular product.
When TV first came into your average household, a third of the country was tuned in, with only 3 or 4 channels. Now, decades later with 2000 channels, a third of the country still tunes into the Super Bowl and advertisers pay how much for 30 seconds?
We’re all guilty.
February 10th, 2011 at 1:03 pm

February 10th, 2011 at 1:03 pm
I agree, MR.
If De caves, he’s the guy that allowed players to take 18% less, play an extra two games, two of which will probably be in Europe.
Whereas his predecessor is the guy that pulled off the great deal the owners were scared of.
February 10th, 2011 at 1:04 pm

February 10th, 2011 at 1:08 pm
When you just say that “something needs to be done”, it implies that both the owners and players are at fault, and that’s absurd. The players’ union can not budge. The owners can. They owners are 100% at fault right now. It’s not a two way street, it’s not a case of two sides that can’t come to agreement. It’s a case of owners being greedy, period.

Per Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer, Rogers is expected to visit the Redskins this week, perhaps as soon as Friday. With Albert Haynesworth as good as gone this offseason, Rogers would be a replacement at nose tackle. Rogers can still get after quarterbacks, but he’s no longer a top-notch run stuffer
