Report: Raiders reach deal with Seymour

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, February 16th, 2011 at 8:16 am in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders have reached a two-year deal with defensive tackle Richard Seymour which pays him a guaranteed $22.5 million over the next two years, according to Sports Illustrated’s Jim Trotter.

Seymour would receive $15 million over each of the next two years _ approximately the value of his franchise figure times two _ and get a $7.5 million bonus.

(Update: The NFL Network is reporting via Jason LaCanfora it is a “multi-year” deal and does not give bonus or salary figures).

The Pro Bowl defensive tackle has maintained in public he wanted to remain a Raider, and at these numbers, this deal serves as validation. Hard to believe he couldn’t have received more on the open market.

For the Raiders, it’s a terrific deal. Now they can franchise tight end Zach Miller to make sure he doesn’t hit the open market and also don’t commit multiple years for a defensive lineman who is an 11-year veteran and may not have multiple seasons of peak play.

In other news regarding potential free agents, FoxSports.com reports the Raiders have a $3.5 million buyback option on the contract of linebacker Kamerion Wimbley, meaning it is within their power to retain his services. Wimbley’s original contract included a void after this season. According to the report, the Raiders would like to reach a longterm deal with Wimbley once a collective bargaining agreement is reached.

My #92 Jersey is still relevant & now appears to have been an excellent investment.

When I think of Seymour the immediate picture thast comes to mind is his straight arm shot to Rothlisberger’s facemask thereby planting him on his ass. It was truly a crisp shot, a reaction actually to Rothlisberger’s taunting Big Rich. Too bad he was ejected as that really did hurt us. Nonetheless, it was the shot that was heard across the league. Seymour was merely pointing out that he was he new sheriff on the Raider D-line.

DOWN GOES ROTHLISBERGER, DOWN GOES ROTHLISBERGER, DOWN GOES ROTHLISBERGER.

A new toughness has become part of the NEW Raider organization. It very much reminds me of the old days of the silver & black.

Free agent WR Jerry Porter has signed with the Montreal Alouettes of the CFL.
Porter hasn’t played in the NFL since bottoming out as a free agent bust with the Jaguars in 2008. Turning 32 in July, Porter’s NFL career is likely finished.

I wish R.Curry didn’t get injured so often then lose his ability to catch the ball, Always liked him. Porter on the other hand is a douche.

Almost everytime I buy a jersey the player leaves the following year. I hope me getting a Nnamdi jersey last year didn’t ruin it for Raider nation.

Seymour re-signed and Wimbley isn’t going anywhere?

    GREAT NEWS !!!

    next up?

Asomugha, Huff, Zmiller, Gallery (in that order)

    Damn you, Hairy!!!!!

Free agent Champ Bailey has put his Colorado home up for sale, just after it was reported Bailey had renewed contract talks with the Broncos.
So much for that. “I am putting my Littleton, (CO) house up for sale,” Bailey confirmed to Inside the NFL’s Josina Anderson. It’s an indication that Bailey doesn’t plan to play for the Broncos in 2011. The team is not believed to be considering using the franchise tag
    —————-
I can see it now the opposition will only be able to throw to tight ends and running backs with Nnamdi and Champ in our defensive backfield :)

Reserve safety Stevie Brown was a “revelation” as a rookie seventh-round pick, according to beat writer Paul Gutierrez.
The No. 251 overall pick showed a penchant for making plays in 15 games, starting one. Brown recorded 30 tackles with two passes defensed, mostly in substitution packages. His emergence could push veteran Hiram Eugene off the roster.

    yeah!

just like trading for Wimbley & Groves and then drafting McClain & Goethel pushed Sam Williams off the roster, right ???

  • bcz24

If we pick up Champ it would likely be to replace a departed Michael Huff at FS… he has said he wants to move to FS to prolong his career.

These three should also be included. Maybe he’ll use the Franchise tag on Bush. He’s the one that has the most to gain and will be highly sought out by other teams.

  • bcz24

Stroud would be a nice pick up to play behind TK

  • DMAC

Cartwright is definitely more important than Gallery.
    Just saying tough.

  • bcz24

Although Stroud did nothing to improve a Buffalo run defense that was actually worse than ours the last few years. But he clearly wasnt a good fit with their 3-4. Also expect them to release Aaron Maybin soon as well.

  • DMAC

Loper filled in for Gallery nicely. Who will fill-in for Rock? He gets our troops motivated on Sp. Teams.

Chump is done. If we wanted to sign a CB and have him play free safety it should have been Chris McAlister when Huff was stuck at SS and guys like Schweigert & Eugene started at safety beside him or in place of him

Good News Mr Davis, on re-signing Big Rich.

  • RaiderRockstar

$15 million per season for Richard Seymour is EXPENSIVE.

this run defense finished 31st & 29th the past 2 years with him in there and he wasn’t exactly a sack machine either. takes a lot of plays off

hopefully he can teach the young guys a few things before it’s time to ride off into the sunset … ShoNasty, Houston, Kelly & Bryant have their mentor

milk that cow for all it’s worth boys!

  • DMAC

What is Ford doing back there returning kick offs? We should still have Gary Russell returning kick offs.
    LMAO
(Damn, I still remember those 5 yard returns)

  • RaiderfanNY

Glad to have Seymour back, but $30 million over 2 years is way too much for a guy who will turn 32 next season and faded badly down the stretch.

He was great for the first half of the season, but got handled against Miami and Pittsburgh and really never recovered.

No other team would have paid nearly this much for Seymour. It’s like Nnamdi’s last deal — way outside the market.

I hope I’m wrong, but I think Big Al will regret this one. I guess he had to keep Seymour because the Pats haven’t even used the first-round pick yet.

Forget bringing Nnamdi back. Davis can’t pay two guys like this. I’d rather have Nnamdi, who is in his prime.

  • RaiderRockstar

Why pay Seymour $15 million this year, when you can tag him and pay him $7 million?

Zach Miller is a RESTRICTED free agent, according to Jhill – so you don’t have to tag him. you tender him at the highest possible level (2 first rounders?) but can negotiate down if other teams express interest

22.5 million guaranteed mayne, with 7 million of that in a bonus.

That’s around 15 million base salary for 2 years, which isn’t much at all.

Yeah… ok. “Chump” Bailey is still in the top 5 best CBs in football. Period.

    NY,

we don’t have to shell out the cash for a 1st rounder… so Al Davis can overpay to keep both Seymour & Asomugha in Oakland (if he wants to)

Unfortunately guys like Huff, Gallery, Reece & Bush may get a lowball offer and opt to test the market instead

  • http://www.pro-football-reference.com/ KoolKell

I think the Raiders need Big Rich this year, I think he’s crucial to the dominant mix on the D-Line.

Maybe he fades next year…. so be it. They have to make their move this year, anyway.

  • J Hill

We could have signed Seymour for $1 and some of you would still be complaining, lol!

    ***
Wrong. Seymour was tagged as a DE last year, and the franchise tag is the average of the top 5 salarys OR 120% whichever is greater. Seymours tag would have been 14.7 mill this year.

    I’d rather have Stan Routt!

  • inonewordraider

Is Seymour really being overpaid? I think Seymour could have gotten at least what we paid him elsewhere showing he really does feel this “happened for a reason”. He’s a real Raider

Seymour played DE in 2009 and got the DE tag that following offseason

Seymour played DT in 2010, but you think we’d still use the DE tag on him this offseason?
