Raiders mourn Albo’s passing
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, February 21st, 2011 at 12:54 pm in Oakland Raiders.
Dr. Robert Albo, former team physican for the Raiders and a longtime medical consultant for the franchise as well as the Golden State Warriors, has died, according to the Raiders’ Web site.
Albo, a close friend of owner Al Davis, was a familiar figure at training camp and team practices.

In Adam Caplan’s NFC East offseason breakdown, he makes an interesting statement regarding Philadelphia Eagles soon-to-be free agent strong safety Quintin Mikell: “(Mikell is) one of the team’s most respected leaders, but there’s much less than a 50-50 chance he returns.” What exactly does “much less than a 50-50 chance” mean? That would probably imply Caplan gives Mikell’s chances at returning in 2011 somewhere between a 25-30 percent chance. I would love for him to expand on this little bombshell as I’ve been acting on the assumption that there was no way the Eagles allow Mikell to walk. He has been a rock in the middle of the defense for the past few seasons and has likely been the reason this defense wasn’t historically bad through the air. And I’m not the only one who thinks highly of Mikell. This is what ProFootballFocus.com’s John Breitenbach had to say about Mikell: “With Vick receiving the franchise t…

Dave Duerson, a key member of the Super Bowl-winning 1985 Chicago Bears, committed suicide by shooting himself in the chest on Thursday. It was a sad end to the life of a man who found great success in his 20s but who was deeply troubled after leaving football.
But before Duerson killed himself, he offered a generous gift to others: His brain.
In a suicide note he sent to friends, Duerson asked that his brain be donated to the Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy at Boston University School of Medicine

Chad Ochocinco is a potential free agent that will be mentioned as a possible Raider. Al Davis loves bringing in veteran players with a proven track record.
Many in the media like to portray Ochocinco as a problem child, but in all reality, he is a playmaking receiver. The Raiders are currently young in the receiving department and are in need of a playmaker.
Hue Jackson—who is most likely to be named head coach—coached Ochocinco when he was the receivers coach for the Bengals.

Great QB conversation on Sirius today between Jim Miller and Pat Kirwan. Both talked about the importance of stature for QBs and that they must have big arms because of all the throws that will need to made off the back foot. Jim Miller absolutely killed Andy Dalton from TCU. Said he saw him up close at Senior Bowl practices and that he doesn’t have pro size or decision making. Doesn’t think you can run movement plays with him in WC offense because he would never hold up. Likes T.J. Yates from NC and some Webber guy from Minnesota as mid-to-late round prospects. Also really likes Mallett.

It appears likely that Willis McGahee will be cut by the Baltimore Ravens this offseason.
The team decided at their recent evaluation meetings not to bring the running back and his $6 million in base salary back for the 2011 season, The Baltimore Sun reported on Monday, citing an NFL source.
Willis McGahee has rushed for 1,595 yards and 24 touchdowns over his past three seasons with the Ravens. (John Rieger/US Presswire)
When asked about McGahee’s future, Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome said that no players would be cut before the current CBA deal expires on March 3. Newsome was non-committal when asked if the running back will be with Baltimore next season.
“Right now, there are a lot of things that could happen before next season,” Newsome said.
McGahee signed a seven-year deal with Baltimore in 2007. He is under contract for 2011, but 2012 ($6.5 million base salary) and 2013 ($7.2 million) are option years.
NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora reported that McGahee, who longs to be a starting tailback again, is not inclined to take less than his $6 million salary to stay behind Ray Rice. La Canfora added that the Ravens are in no rush to release McGahee, but a parting of the sides seems inevitable at some point this offseason.
McGahee, 29, earned $3.6 million to serve as Rice’s backup last season, rushing for 380 yards and five touchdowns on 100 carries. Rice, 24, finished with 1,220 yards and five touchdowns on 307 carries. Rice added 63 catches for 556 yards and a TD reception, making him the more versatile of the two players.
If the Ravens cut ties with McGahee, it is unclear who will share the load with Rice for the run-first offense. Fullback Le’Ron McClain and his power-running style is an option, but he is due to become an unrestricted free agent later this offseason. Another route is to bring back McGahee. The Ravens will have the opportunity to make a new offer to McGahee once he becomes a free agent, presumably in the range of his 2010 salary.

Paea is a powerful run stuffer that plays angry and should contribute immediately at the next level. He is as strong as an ox and consistently knocks lineman back on their heels. He takes on double teams and is near impossible to move out of the hole. He lacks refined pass rushing skills, but has heavy hands and a good burst to eventually become a weapon on third down. He is still learning the finer points of the game, but he has unparalleled toughness and a tireless work ethic. Paea will likely not last past the middle of the first round.

How Good Was Oakland’s Offense?
So, in the column announcing the winners of the FO reader awards, I noted that people voted for Hue Jackson as coordinator of the year “simply for not sucking in Oakland.” One of the readers pointed out that by official numbers, the Raiders were a lot better than just “not sucking.” Believe it or not, the Raiders ranked sixth in the NFL in points scored this year. I honestly had no idea. I’ve been going through the whole season thinking of them in terms of DVOA, where they ranked 23rd.
I didn’t go back to check, but I’ve got to figure this is one of the biggest gaps between DVOA and points scored over the past two decades. 17 places in the standings is a BIG difference. So what is DVOA seeing that a simple look at points scored doesn’t show?
1) Oakland had an easy schedule, 23rd in the NFL by average DVOA of opponent.
2) Oakland had a great fumble recovery record, 15 of 23 fumbles on offense.
OK, but even without adjustments for these two things, Oakland would have 1.1% offensive DVOA. That would be 19th instead of 23rd. There is still a lot of room between that and sixth. What else?
3) Defensive touchdowns? Actually no, Oakland had just three, which is pretty average.
4) Oakland ran a lot of drives, because the defense was very good at forcing three-and-outs. The Raiders had 199 offensive drives, third in the league.
5) Oakland had a lot of very long plays. As you may know, in the DVOA formula, the value of each additional yard starts to drop after about 20 yards, because longer touchdowns are only partly about making better plays. They’re partly about field position, because you can’t run for a 60-yard touchdown when you are past midfield.
The Raiders had 11 plays of 50+ yards, 19 plays of 40+ yards, and 35 plays of 30+ yards. In all three categories, they were second to the Philadelphia Eagles.
6) Some of what ended up as points is actually field position from defense and special teams. The Raiders ranked higher in defensive DVOA (15th) than in points allowed (20th).
Of course, it’s still hard to believe that all this is still enough to get us from 23rd in DVOA to sixth in point scored. Is it possible our formula mistakenly underrated the 2010 Raiders? Perhaps. On the other hand, I doubt that Jacoby Ford is going 71 yards on an end around again in 2011.
February 21st, 2011 at 5:23 pm
Oo,
you seem to live in fear as do so many here.
sixth in points with a JaSoup who s^cked early in the year only to get much better the last five games (plus a dose of Gradbruceski who s^cked period) should make you appreciative of what HueJack accomplished (along with no WRs to speak of).
Stop living in fear.

I don’t even pretend to know what the heck DVOA is. But I surmise your premise is that the Raiders offene is not as good as advertised last year or repeating such perfmorance will be a pie in the sky hope.
I don’t know what the future holds, but I DO think it looks very promising for a Raider.
HueJack said when he came here we were going to be explosive and he’s going to try to score every time that ball is snaped.
You don’t see Ford going 70yds on an end around? Oh really? How about DMC breaking a 50 yarder? How about Murphy/Ford/or even DHB catching a bomb for another 50+ yards off playaction behind a better equipped Oline? Or even Bush muscling through for another 30+ yard gain?
This offense is built on speed and now that have a guy who knows how to create space for it to succeed (and even brought in a genius to get better) and you don’t see this going forward.
Maybe. Maybe not. But I won’t bet against the 2011 RAAAAIDDDEEEEERRSS!!
Big plays are here to stay. And the defense will only get better.

Tim Tebow hesitant to do as many commercials as Peyton Manning
Posted by Michael David Smith on February 21, 2011, 6:17 PM EST
Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow entered the NFL as the most celebrated quarterback coming out of college since Peyton Manning, and Tebow’s popularity could make him the NFL’s highest-profile celebrity pitchman since Manning.
Except that Tebow says he worries that doing as many commercials as Manning would cause too many distractions.

Man I would love for DHB to make a huge leap next year. It would do wonders for our offense if he did.
But you look back on his second half of the year and it is miserable.
Over the last 7 games, he had 7 catches for 100 yards with two drops and zero TD’s, and 3 carries for 18 yards and one lost fumble.
Not really the stuff of legends.

He is a better baseball player than football player anyways.

Vegas,
I know this may be stretching the glass half full viewpoint to it’s limits, but…didn’t you think DHB looked a lil more natural catching the ball, at least. Compared to his rookie year at least.
I know his stats still sucked and his impact was minimal. Disasterous as a #7 overall, really.
I will say he did look a lil more fluid, or natural catching the ball. As a rookie you could tell he was really pressing. Looked like he was wearing oven mitts. Fought the ball..bobbled it like a hot potato. Through his hands, off his chest, etc.
Last year, there were times, albeit way too few, where I went damn…nice catch DHB! Actually looked like a pro receiver. He even had the teaser game vs. Seattle. Something like five for 100+ and a TD.
He went from 9 as a rook to what 25 this year. He needs 55-65 catches with at least 5 TD’s. He needs a breakout year in the worst way.
If not, it’s probably time to cut their losses and move on.
February 21st, 2011 at 7:05 pm
Al Davis will take Nnamdi Asomugha big contract and spread the wealth.
February 21st, 2011 at 7:08 pm
DHB did look better and certainly even had a few catches with his hands.
But, in two years, I have yet to see him catch a ball in stride. Everything is with his back to the defense, at a near dead stop, facing the QB. When on the run, he wiffs like the end of the Jax game, or the first play of the AZ game.
Based on what I saw last year, I have more confidence in him becoming kind of a 15 yards and in possession WR (how crazy does that sound??) who could get some YAC, more so than a big play, deep ball threat.
Time will tell.
February 21st, 2011 at 7:18 pm
The one thing I like about Terrell Owens is even though he continues to burn bridges on every team he plays for, his assessment of the teams are usually spot on.
Unfortunately because he doesn’t have media protection he gets blasted for his honesty. Owens comments about the Bengals are no different that what Carson Palmer is subliminally saying, it is just Owens has no tact.
“You start with the head coach, and then you start with the staff on both sides of the ball,” Owens said on NFL Network’s Total Access. “Offensively, we really didn’t have the coaching that we really needed to muster what we had on the offensive side of the ball.”
“I’ve made a comment about if you’re trying to win some championships, it starts from the top down,” Owens said. “[Sapp] mentioned Mike Brown; I think even before I got there, they said the owner was a little different. Obviously, I saw that.”
“Obviously if you have your franchise quarterback who is supposed to be that guy for your team trying to get out of there, that’s kind of telling the organization something, and that’s telling a lot of people out there something as well,” Owens said.
The one problem that Owens has, is that he never preface his comments by taking any of the blame himself. He may not honestly believe he is to blame, so he feels no need to say it.
But when are talking about team sports, win as a team, lose as a team. The players are to blame as well, even if the coaches and front office is incompetent.
Owens has Bart Simpson disease every time something goes bad he says.
“It wasn’t me.”
Sometimes it isn’t, sometimes he does have something to do with it, but what he fails to realize is that the other teams in the NFL see this and wonder if he is worth the trouble.
There is a reason only the Bengals offered him a contract last season, and why Hue Jackson may be the only one who takes a look at him this year.

Vegas,
This is a lil off topic, but it’s a slow time of the year so, what the hell.
One of my best friends didn’t want the Reds to bring back Dusty Baker as manager. Wanted to keep him miles away from the Reds young pitchers.
He blames Baker for ruining Kerry Wood and Mark Pryors arms in Chicago. I guess he thinks he overused them.
I thought Dusty did a good job managing the young Reds into the postseason, and was glad he was given an extension.
Baker managed your beloved Giants for awhile, what did you think of him?
February 21st, 2011 at 7:34 pm
It’s funny to me that Dusty gets the wrap for overusing his starters, because when he was with the Giants, the first sign of trouble, he went to the pen immediately.
Case in point, Game 6 of the 2002 World Series. Russ Ortiz for close to five years was always a guy who pitched out of trouble and up like 5 runs, Dusty yanks him with one on and one out in the 6th. Bullpen blows it and we lose the series.
Other than that, Dusty is a GREAT manager, and really knows how to manage the miles of veterans throughout the season.
BTW, do you guys still have that Dickerson kid? I thought for sure he would be a stud, but haven’t heard anything from him.

If the dude who was asking me the questions about the Reds awhile back is out there…yesterday Hal McCoy, the longtime Reds beatwriter for the Dayton Daily News said Dusty Baker is floatin the idea of batting CF Drew Stubbs at leadoff.
The guy has the speed for sure, but does he make enough consistant contact. That’s the big “IF”.
Just FYI…
I know most of you don’t give a rat’z azz about the Reds, or maybe even baseball in general. Sorry.

For all u talkn about DHB getting better….. NOT gonna happen….. This kid sucks he puts in tons of offseason work to get better and still puts up paltry numbers and drops passes that should be snatched from the air…. Everybody who got drafted behind him in his skill position is way better( Mike Wallace and yes even Micheal Crabtree). He is not a natural football player, but they say the WR position takes at least 3 years to develop… Too me, if u got it, U got it… And DHB ain’t never had it…. Bust and a half and a big time whiff that cost us points and fan fare….. He frustrates me just watching him line up on the wrong side of the ball, while Ford had to show him where to line up…. Murphy has it, Ford definitely has it…. DHB = Disasterous Hellacious Bust….. Al is holding on to him cuz he desperately wants to say I told u so, but after this year his patient will wear… We can only hope

But, in two years, I have yet to see him catch a ball in stride. Everything is with his back to the defense, at a near dead stop, facing the QB.
==============================================
You’re absolutely correct.
In order to be a true deep threat a WR must have the ability to make catches over his shoulder or with his back to the QB.
DHB has yet to show even a glimmer of hope of posessing that ability.
For me, DHB’s most distressing drop came against KC in the last game of the season.
He’s got two steps on the defender cutting back and towards the left sideline. JaJason’s pass hits him squarely in the hands. Both hands, as he’s facing JaJason about 12 yards upfield. Should be an absolutely simple catch, but instead it clanks off those mitts.
Horrific.
One of the few times JaJason actually attempted a pass longer than 10 yards and was on target.
DHB also has a very bad habit of leaving his feet while attempting to make a catch on the move. Jumps when it’s not necessary and breaks his stride (not that JaJason could hit him in stride anyway).
DHB has loads of physical talent but isn’t a natural football player.
I’ll never forget the play from 2 years ago, the loss against the Giants in the Meadowlands…JaMoron threw one of his patented ridiculous interceptions…Giant DB takes the pick and is racing the other way…coming up behind him is DHB…DHB is MOTORING…I mean, he’s a blurrr…his top speed is simply amazing…the other players look like they’re standing still in comparison…but DHB doesn’t tackle the Giant DB from behind or even attempt to do so…he races PAST him…has time to turn around and face him before the Giant DB was tackled by someone else.
True, DHB has no experience playing defense…but that play demonstrated he has no natural instincts for playing football, yet has off the charts physical ability.
I don’t know if DHB will ever be able to realize his potential, but I can understand why Davis took a shot by drafting him. At this point it looks like the DHB gamble will be a failed one, but if he can manage to salvage even a modicum of his ability – he will not be a total failure.
Yup, considering he was drafted 7th overall, one would have to say he’s a bust so far, but the DHB saga is far from over and there’s still hope he can be a productive NFL player.
On the plus side, all reports indicate he’s dedicated and hard working. During the bye week he was here in Reno with JaJason, so the two of them have some sort of comaraderie, and hopefully are working together improving their timing this offseason.

haha i knew my boy would show up. just saw the denver trade happened. yall keep saying we need to trade 1 of our guards for a big like there are big time forwards that will be traded. that is a special backcourt that we need to BUILD AROUND, not break up my friend. what difference making big man is on the trade block? we have no bench and biendrins has fallen far off. we have as many wins now as we did last year and this is with steph and lee being hurt. yall trippin talkin about trading monta or steph. let the damn team grow and add to it. its all good yall aint know so i forgive yall. last year 26-56,this year 26-29 but we need to break up our backcourt. haha yalls trippin!!

Fords numbers would have been double or better if he would have started… I am stoked to see his improvement in 2011…… He reminds me of Steve Smith but scary faster…. People don’t realize what a talent he is when it comes to creating space while running routes and his super explosiveness on his kick off returns… Look for him to play with a chip for getting snubbed on so many special team player awards including the pro bowl

Yeah raidermann I remember that int where he just went 100 yard dash on us…. Get em outta here… He’s a BUM I tell ya…. Al Davis had no business drafting him sorry…. He reminds me of Wesley snipes on that baseball movie from back in the day somebody help me out here… What’s the name of that flick ? That is DHB if he played baseball

Monta and Curry are not winning anything. I mean, that’s what we are talking about, right? Winning.
Very entertaining backcourt. Can put up points and look good doing it. A team that might be able to fight for the 8th spot in the west year and year out.
Like Al said, if that’s the world you live in.
February 21st, 2011 at 9:46 pm
I’d try and trade Curry and a pick for something like J.R Smith and Nene.
February 21st, 2011 at 10:02 pm
jhill thats just stupid. monta and steph have been outscored only 8 times in 55 games. this is a young team that is growing. they aint ready 2 win a title yet without a bench. jr smith and nene wont help them get much better than they are now. this is the second year they have played 2gether and the team is much better than they were a year ago. goin from 26 wins to fighting for an 8th seed in 1 year is damn good progress. why can every other team build for a couple years but the dubs have to panic and break sh!t up? give them some damn help and see how far they can go before u start tradin mofos. tradin guys away is what has set this team back so many years. we havent lost games cuz of them, its the damn bench that we dont have.
February 21st, 2011 at 10:11 pm
OK Armond.
You like your team the way it is now? Fine by me. Good luck with that.
So what if your backcourt outscores everyone else? That’s not translating to wins, is it?
JR Smith will give you some defense in that back court. Nene gives you somewhat of a low post game. He can play with his back to the basket.
Not to many teams out their with a bench. League is too watered down as it is.
February 21st, 2011 at 10:14 pm
Dem Maryland boyz DHBeast and Beast Campbell are going to be just fine.
February 21st, 2011 at 10:29 pm
how many more wins will smith and nene give us? u actin like they would make the dubs 15 wins better. if i get rid of either guard then i better get kevin love or a blake griffin type big man. jr smith is nothin special but nene is cool. neither of them are difference makers. jhill, they have already won as many games as last year with less of a bench and injuries to steph and lee. obviously it has translated into wins. yall just too stubborn to realize that being stuck on tradition. who the hell says u have to have a big backcourt. its about talent. i could careless about other teams not having a bench. there enough teams that do and we need to get 1. dont get why we have to get away from the plan cuz the so called “experts” are 2 impatient 2 let the team grow.

13. Correct. Mikell is a really solid safety coming into his own but its taken Huff 6 yrs to FINALLY get a grasp on single high safety.
He stays.
Continuity is going to be stressed this year as it should.
You know, other than with HC…and DC…and OC…and

Lets hope Bey = Branch not Jett
I think he really can. Like the power he’s using when he runs his routes and he blocks.
Needs to catch though and some wierd issues last season like the hammy non hammy in pre and some mystery illnesses in season.
Hopefully he becomes the weapon we hope he can be starting in 2011
February 21st, 2011 at 11:08 pm
At this point, I wouldn’t even mind if Bey started producing like James Jett did. He doesn’t even seem to be on Jett’s level.
February 22nd, 2011 at 3:12 am
ouch =)
February 22nd, 2011 at 4:53 am
James Jett had 256 catches for 4,417 yards and 30 TD’s in his career.
I would be shocked, and pleasantly suprised if DHB approached those numbers in his career.
February 22nd, 2011 at 5:09 am
Man what a secondary GB would have if they got Nnamdi and moved Woodson to safety!.
February 22nd, 2011 at 5:23 am
That was clearly written by Al. RIP Dr. Albo!
February 22nd, 2011 at 5:28 am
James friggin Jett!
He may not have been the best but man was he fun to watch! Also the excitement and anticipation of those bombs were something else. You just never knew if he’d come up with it, he’d drop some right in his mitts and make some unbelievable grabs.
I agree with YA, if DHB can match Jett’s play, I’d be happy with that.
February 22nd, 2011 at 5:34 am
Whats DHBs longest catch? I know he had the 66 yarder against Seattle but that was really like a 10 yard hitch that Seattle totally blew the coverage on. Has this guy even made a catch more than 20 yards down field.
February 22nd, 2011 at 5:40 am
35 catches 490 yards 2 TDs, and 6 carries for 67 yards. Thats an average month for Welker, and those are DHBs CAREER stats. LOL
February 22nd, 2011 at 6:19 am
COULD HAVE WENT THE REST OF MY NATURAL LIFE HAPPY WITHOUT BEING REMINDED OF JAMES JETT..

Just read an article over at yahoo, 9 players have ran the 40 in under 4.3. Out of those 9, 4 were drafted by the Raiders. Washington, Routt, DHB & Ford. One of those other players was, Champ Bailey in ‘99.
I know Al would love to have Champ. Especially being an ex-Bronco. Now would Nnamdi stay for less if Champ was brought aboard along with new DB coach Rod Woodson? I sure hope so. Bailey & Asomugha with Huff/Branch/Mitchell/Brown/Ware/McFadden could be the best defensive backfield in the league.

Looking back at last years draft, there really are only 5 WR’s names I know after this current season. The top 3 and then the 2 from the Steelers, this comes from watching the playoffs.
The Rams who so desperately needed WR’s this year, drafted a kid by the name on Mardy Gilyard in the 4th round, ahead of Ford. He was to be a WR project and KR.
Here’s his stats vs. Ford:
Year Team G Rec Yds Y/G Avg Lng YAC 1stD TD KR Yds Avg Long TD
2010 St. Louis 11 6 63 5.7 10.5 21 2.3 4 0 16 356 22.3 34 0
Year Team G Rec Yds Y/G Avg Lng YAC 1stD TD KR Yds Avg Long TD
2010 Oakland 16 25 470 29.4 18.8 52 5.2 19 2 53 1280 24.2 101 3
Big miss by the Rams and great pick by Davis!

I remember thinking at the time we drafted Ford that Al had finally gotten out of the room they’d had him locked in.

Jacoby Ford draft preview
Strengths
Ford is a premier track athlete with excellent timed top-end speed. Exhibited great foot quickness as a returner and running reverses in college. Flashes the ability to adjust to off target throws and bail out his quarterback. Was a very productive player whose team always tried to get him involved early and often.
Don’t know who wrote this but they were bang on, especially here:
“Flashes the ability to adjust to off target throws and bail out his quarterback.”

As I said last week, Al Saunders was a longtime WR coach for Don Coryell, Marty and won a ring as WR coach for Vermeil’s Rams.
Let him work with DHB, Murphy and Ford.
February 22nd, 2011 at 10:39 am
DHB is done aftr the 2011 season…… Doesn’t matter who coaches him, he will be behind schilens, murphy, ford, and even nick miller! Don’t letus pick up a vet at the WR position cuz then he might be out by training camp…. Really I hope he proves me wrong cuz he probably deserves to shine after all his hard work… I seriously doubt it though….
