Fox: Wimbley gets word he’ll be a Raider in 2011
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011 at 7:07 am in Oakland Raiders.
Kamerion Wimbley, who led the Raiders in sacks and had his best season since his rookie season as one of the better trade acquisitions, has been informed he will remain in Oakland, according to Adam Caplan of FoxSports.com.
Wimbley’s original six year contract contained a void for the final year, but also included a “buy back” believed to be $3.5 million which the Raiders exercised.
Oakland dealt a third-round draft pick to Cleveland for Wimbley last March 14, played him as a starting strong side linebacker and a nickel pass rusher, and he responded with a team-high nine sacks as the Raiders had 47 for the season.
The Raiders must decide by Wednesday whether to use a franchise tag in 2011. Speculation has Zach Miller as the most likely target, although it’s uncertain if the Raiders will avail themselves of the designation this season.
If Miller were to be franchised, he would be due approximately $7.3 million this season. A four-year veteran, there is no guarantee Miller would be available for unrestricted free agency under a new collective bargaining agreement. The Raiders, however, would be on the hook for that figure even if a new CBA set unrestricted free agency at five or six years _ meaning they cost themselves a lot of money because they simply could have placed a restrictive tender on him and had the chance to match any offer.
Regardless, there’s no reason to believe Miller won’t be a Raider in 2011. Historically, Al Davis has been very good at keeping players he wants to keep. Miller has been the Raiders leading receiver each of the last four years since being a second-round draft pick out of Arizona State in 2007.
At present, the only other tight ends on the Oakland roster are Brandon Myers and Kevin Brock, the latter a reserve/future signing who spent time on the 2010 practice squad.

Why not just offer Miller a contract, or have they?

Good morning Jerry.
February 22nd, 2011 at 7:13 am
That seems just a little too easy Carl.
February 22nd, 2011 at 7:15 am
The next game-breaker?.
As rookies:
Desean Jackson: 15 starts 62-912-2—14.7 ypc. 1 Ret TD.
Jacoby Ford: 9 starts 25-470-2—18.8 ypc. 3 Ret. TD.
As I said last week, Al Saunders coached WR’s for Don Coryell, Marty and won a ring in that position with Vermeil’s Rams, let him work with DHB, Murphy and Ford.
February 22nd, 2011 at 7:15 am
I don’t think Miller or Bush will be eligble for free agency. Four years just seems to short considering most players don’t have much impact in year one and sometimes year two, if at all.
February 22nd, 2011 at 7:15 am
I guess, like my season ticket status…Miller is put on hold until a new CBA is in place…but oops! I forgot to call on Friday (deadline)…lol

Maybe Sanjay Lal can learn a thing or two from Saunders as well.

Jacoby Ford draft preview
Strengths
Ford is a premier track athlete with excellent timed top-end speed. Exhibited great foot quickness as a returner and running reverses in college. Flashes the ability to adjust to off target throws and bail out his quarterback. Was a very productive player whose team always tried to get him involved early and often.
Don’t know who wrote this but they were bang on, especially here:

To think, we only got Ford because of the Morrison trade. I think we get the good end of that one.
February 22nd, 2011 at 8:12 am
I see no benefit in franchising Miller right now.
First off, there is no CBA. When there is one, if there is franchise tags still, you can wait until than to do it.
Also, 7.3 million is way too much. If you are going to pay that for one year, you might as well double that, and you can probably wrap him up for 3 years.
Than there is the chance that under the new CBA, he will be a restricted FA anyways, and we can just let him go feel out some offers and than match it.
No sense franchising him this week.
February 22nd, 2011 at 8:20 am
Kamerion Wembley was a steal for a 3rd round pick.

Lal started as a quality control guy, than got a contract extension and a promotion to WR’s.
He is now on his 3rd head coach, and was one of the few coaches in attendance at the Senior Bowl.
He isn’t going anywhere but up in this organization. Wouldn’t be suprised if he moved up to scouting and personnel later as well.

Actually Thursday is the deadline for applying the franchise tag. We are gambling that Miller and Bush will be RFAs. ITs a relatively safe bet though. I agree that north of 7 million is WAY too much for Miller. Dallas Clark only makes 5 million a year. We can lock Miller up for a 3 year deal for no more than 15 mill. Although I would pay him 3 mill a year with some incentives.
If money is a problem, we can start by restructuring DHB. That guy shouldnt be making any more than league minimum with some decent incentives incase he steps it up this year.

Good Morning A.M. Crew!
February 22nd, 2011 at 8:44 am
Good afternoon fellas.
Thank gawd for that option in Wimbley’s contract. Hopefully now they can reach a long term deal. This guy was an integral part of their much improved pass rush.
Much like Seymour, it seemed shaky to trade a high draft pick for a player going into his contract year without reaching an extension.
If they can get Kamerion locked up, that would make for an excellent trade. Guy was a steal.

The thing with Wembley is that he really only seemed to have his one “go-to” move.
The quick off the ball, get low to the ground, dip-move. He is great at it, but if it doesn’t work, he just gets pushed behind the play.
Nevertheless, he is WAAAAAY better than Trevor Scott.
February 22nd, 2011 at 9:22 am
Sanjay deserves some credit for Jacoby Ford last year, and for getting some production from Murphy as a rookie, and even getting a 7th rounder like Chaz to produce when healthy.
He gets a lot of bashing for DHB’s lack of growth, but I think DHB himself is more the root cause of his 2 TD’s in 2 years than Sanjay Lal.

Charles Woodson is willing to move from corner to safety if the Packers can sign free agent CB Nnamdi Asomugha.
Asomugha was Woodson’s teammate in Oakland from 2003-2005, although he insists he’s “not doing any recruiting,” and the two have only “texted a few times about winning a Super Bowl.” Woodson can probably save his text messages, because the last time Packers GM Ted Thompson made a pricey free agent move, it was April 2006. We’ll let you guess who he signed.

Don’t no if it was Sanjay who was responsible, but when Ford came out from College he had serious problems with adjusting to breakdowns and turns – he couldnt keep his speed going in and coming out of cuts, now he can! He blazes down the strecth but still manage to keep his speed when doing a cut, thats a great asset, and whoever helped him achieve that deserves at least some credit! Now we just need a guy who can help learn how to catch and clutch, then we’re good..

A league source confirmed to Profootballtalk.com that the Ravens will not formally decide Willis McGahee’s fate until after a new collective bargaining agreement is arranged.
Monday’s news that the Ravens won’t bring back McGahee for $6 million wasn’t the least bit surprising, and it’s possible the sides could attempt to redo his contract before or just after the CBA. The most likely outcome remains that McGahee will be cut and get one last shot at unrestricted free agency. Regardless, teams won’t view him as more than a rotational back.

That’s not a popular opinion around here, but one I personally agree with.
To me, with THIS Raider team, all Aso’s presence does is make it a 10 on 10 game instead of 11 on 11.
On highlight shows when they are talking about Aso and they show him in action they always show him maiking a good tackle; as if THAT is something he brings to the table. It is not. He makes VERY FEW tackles.
He is a class act and a great face for the franchise and his ability to shut down a receiver is second to none. He gets my props big time, but for THIS team, unless you have a guy on the other corner doing pretty much the same thing, then it really doesn’t translate into stopping the other team make a lot of yardage.
Double digit losses for 7 years WITH him back there. How much worse could we get?

Definitely. This is something I’ve been saying for a while now.
It’s no coincidence that every good Raiders team had two elite starting CBs. Brown/Thomas, Haynes/Hayes, Woodson/Allen…
February 22nd, 2011 at 11:09 am
Routt has done an admirable job seeing as much action as he does, but he’s not the kind of player that makes opposing QBs think twice before throwing at him. For having so many passes come his way, he really didn’t produce a lot of turnovers.
It’s why I think Huff should be a priority over Routt. Huff was getting to the QB, forcing fumbles, and made a few nice picks over the course of the season. The forced the most turnovers by far of anyone on that defense. Of course, it was a contract year, which makes me wonder if it was a mirage of if Huff has finally come into his own.

Haha word.
Nah, I agree with you for the most part.
Honestly I have serious questions about both Routt and Huff, considering both of them waited until a contract year to live up to the Raiders’ expectations, and even then the pass defense surrendered the second most TDs in the league.
A small part of me thinks that, especially if Nnamdi isn’t going to be back, it might be time to blow up the secondary and try to find playmakers elsewhere. But then a bigger part of me knows that all that means is A LOT of blown draft picks on big fast DBs.
Offensive line and secondary are full of question marks this season. It’ll be interesting to see what happens with the draft, as well as free agency once a CBA is reached.

Saying Aso had even one single “garbage” season simply isn’t correct. He is a great player, better than most DB’s in the NFL for sure. He is probably more valuable to a team like Baltimore, the Jets, or the Eagles than he is to us.. but hey, that’s just my opinion.

I know we all hate D. Hall, but I got to say he has got to have the best hands as a CB.
February 22nd, 2011 at 11:54 am
Deangelo and Champ, best hands in the game for DB’s today (C-Wood close but not quite).
Best all-time was Prime Time though. That guy made catches as a DB that DHB couldn’t do in his dreams.
February 22nd, 2011 at 11:55 am
Opposing qbs got scared because Nnamdi closed out the (2008?) season with 8 ints in 8 games. He is far and away the best man to man bump and run cover CB in the NFL. You simply will never burn Nnamdi, but he has difficulty running zones (as our whole secondary does, coaching is most likely the issue) and he doesnt break off his man to make plays, no risk, but no reward. I wouldnt be surprised at all for Nnamdi to go somewhere else and simply be average though, however I do NOT think that will be the case. He will simply be ignored where ever he ends up.

ok ,al davis has always paid top dollar to the people he wants.with a cap limit you just cant go out buy everyone .with no cba in place ,not knowing where the cap will be its money better spent on the whole of the team vs one player.

I put Asante Samuels up in that hands for a DB category, he is very similar to DHall, takes a lot of risks, and gets beat a lot, but makes a lot of plays too. Ed Reed has the best hands of any DB though.
I wouldnt want to through the ball against Baltimore with Dominique Foxworth, Nnamdi, Washington, Carr, Reed…
February 22nd, 2011 at 11:59 am
Nnamdi’s value is that he can be left on an island, so your strong safety can be more aggressive in the running game and your free safety can shift his coverage to the other side.
Would be very surprised if a traditional “Tampa 2″ team makes a run at him. Whatever team gets him is going to take advantage of his ridiculous man coverage skills… unless that team is in the business of throwing insane money at top-rated players without having the slightest idea of how they fit in.

If a salary cap is part of the new CBA, then it will start for the 2012 season. They arent going to slap a salary cap on teams that are already making financial decisions. The owners will never allow it. Salary caps are soft anyways, there is always a way around it.

Tampa 2 is pretty much dead. Whos left that really runs it? Indy? You are right though, the team that goes after Nnamdi will HAVE to spend more than 50% of their defensive snaps in man coverage, or be willing to take a huge gamble that they can coach area21 into being a zone guy.
February 22nd, 2011 at 12:05 pm
The Panthers will have their hands full trying to bring other free agents like Johnson, Davis, possibly Smith and Williams back into the fold.
The Raiders might want to take a look at CB Richard Marshall.

The Bears run it, but that’s why their defense struggles against elite offenses. That, and the fact that the key ingredient in the Tampa 2 is the linebackers, and all their linebackers are either againg (Briggs, Urlacher) or not that good (Hillenmeyer, Tinoisamoa).
Living in Chicago, I see a lot of Bears games. They have to be one of the most overrated defenses in the league. Which is sad for a team that prides themselves on their defense.
A bunch of teams run variations of the Tampa 2, but the ones who do it well change it up a lot and are very good at pressuring the QB.
The Saints were good at it during their SuperBowl run, but as teams started figuring it out, they started using more man-coverage on the outside, doing a fair amount of DT stunts and zone blitzes, and utilized a single-high FS so the SS could help more in run support.
February 22nd, 2011 at 12:16 pm
Thats what I mean, Chicago and Indy are the only 2 teams left that primarily run a Tampa 2 as a system, I know a lot of teams will incorporate Tampa 2 into some of their looks,an example is NE who does it very well.
Chicago’s defense is still VERY good against the run. If you can take the run away, and put pressure on the QB (peppers and idonaje are great at this) then you can be successful.

I think a bunch of RB’s will be released this offseason …
most teams are going to a 2 back rotation and nobody has 2 RB’s over 28 years old
Mike Bush will not headline the group of RB FA’s and besides, he’s a RESTRICTED free agent that Davis & Jackson both talked up. I gotta think he stays, even if we have to match another offer he gets as a RFA

i like nomdi seems like a good guy and all ,above average player at his position, but it is easy to look the other way when facing us ,when you can have your way with the rest of the defense like in the last few years. with poor run defense sub par line backer play, green safties, other teams dont need to test nomdi.even after greatly improving across the board last year he still wasnt tested.as the rest of the defense gets better his numbers should get a lot better.when we get good enough to force the other team to do what we want he’ll get his int’s

I am all for drafting as many TCU players as possible.
Kirkpatrick in 4th, Jeremy Kerley in the 5th, maybe Andy Dalton if need be, and I’m sure they have some quality defensive players.
Gary Patterson, TCU’s coach, teaches his kids the nuances of the game better than any other collegiate coach, IMO. That’s why they can compete with the big boys without any 5 or even 4 star recruits.
Those guys know how to win, and how to do their job, and they almost always are level-headed dudes.

Seriously? You think he is a “terrible” blocker? How so? Please explain…
He is a great pass catching TE, and good run blocker (he has to overcompensate for a bad O-Line)…. Many people (outside of the Raiders) like to compare him to Todd Heap. However, compare Todd Heaps O-Line to Zach’s O line…

I watched his first game at center which was a disaster, but i didnt see him play the rest of the year, but I just think (especially if a rookie wage scale is in place and higher picks become more valuable) it will be too expensive to trade into the first round. It cost Denver 3 picks (2nd 3rd and 4th rounders traded to baltimore for their 1st) to get back into the first round last year.

Watch the Jax game as an example of Miller’s blocking prowess.
He gets run over by a Safety in the first half, and gives up a sack (the guy’s 1st career sack).
Than later in the game, completely wiffs on someone in the open-field, and reaches out and grabs him and gets called for a hold, while D-Mac scored on the play. Cost us 4 points, and potentially the game.

Free Agency in the NFL started in 1989 with Plan B. It marked a new way of operation for NFL teams.
In the 22 Seasons since the implementation of Free Agency and the Modern Era, some teams have adjusted, some have not. The following is the number of winning seasons by team since 1989:
1 Pittsburgh 17
2 Philadelphia 15
3 Miami 14
4 Green Bay 14
5 New England 14
6 Minnesota 14
7 Indianapolis 14
8 Kansas City 13
9 Dallas 13
10 Denver 12
11 San Francisco 12
12 Tennessee 11
13 New York Giants 11
14 New York Jets 10
15 Buffalo 10
16 Tampa Bay 9
17 San Diego 9
18 Chicago 9
19 Seattle 8
20 Washington 8
21 Atlanta 8
22 New Orleans 8
23 Oakland 7
24 Detroit 6
25 St Louis 5
26 Cleveland 4
27 Arizona 3
28 Cincinnati 3
Jacksonville’s been in the NFL since 1995, 7 winning seasons
Carolina been in the NFL since 1995, 4 winning seasons
Baltimore’s been in the NFL since 1996, 8 winning seasons
Houston’s been in the NFL since 2002, 1 winning season.

Yes you are correct. I didn’t state my opinion very well. I meant to only address the free agency part in my commwents, the fact that the Raiders have picked up some good free agents, however, the winning season and record are indeed very inadequate.

Well, Kevin, the object is to win, not merely pick up good players via free agency, so I don’t see how that’s an effective argument for the Raiders’ handling of free agency. The object of acquiring a free agent is to win football games, ultimately a Super Bowl, is it not?

You are only partially correct. Yes, the object is to pick up FA’s and win the big one, for most owners that is. Where you have missed the boat is the object of Oaklands GM is to spend the most money to win the big one, not aquire the best FA’s, but to spend the most money. Big difference. If that were to translate to winning the big one, then we could use the FA argument. But since we can’t, we will use the big buck argument. I know that sounds crazy, but we’re talking Al here, so really, quite logical. Consider yourself schooled.

I agree, I am not arguing, or trying to make an argument. I merely thought KoolKell was addressing Free Agency in gerneral terms. It wasn’t until recently that I realized he was inferring to the deficiancies of the Raiders “since” free agency.

OK. Al does not go after FA’s as much anymore, even so if he does, it is almost low key. He is a maverik trader, aquirring players for draft round pick, and through the draft itself. Al has begun a new order of building a winning franchise, long term, slow and steady through the draft and trades, even giving up round picks. He is in it for the long haul now, after all we did go from 5-11 to 8-8 and really coulda been 10/11 wins if not for a hang-over and cold feet. His ex, the “we’re not losers anymore” guy got the ball rolling, just like Al had formulated, and now Al has put it all together for a run at the big one. He may take a late round QB cause he knows Campbell is not for the long haul, but we’ll wait and see how Farve the ex-packer/jet/viking is doing with his work on JC. But make no mistake, Al is building for the long haul, no more buy today/win today attitudes. Draft and build, meet the needs of the team. No more big names for big dollars like he used to do. Al has a good GM in place, and they are busy gettin’er done.

As for McClain, he has showed versatility, had a sack and pick and did well against the run and has freakish power as well…. a billion people revolt against their surrounding autocrats (although all that will come of it is other dictators or theocrats), representative gov (if there ever was any) crumbles before the onslaught of selfish parameters in the homeland, the trouble with trifles is once again the movement hereabouts.

Don’t be so darned defensive all of the time. Not at ONE single point in our conversation did I ever try to diminish your comment? I simply asked for an example based on your comment as a matter of interest, and asked for someone other than Charles Woodson as a matter of interest as I couldn’t come up with any off hand. You took this into a personal type converstation instead of keeping it civil. Man o man were we wrong…. If he panned out to play to hid potential we would have been in the post season this last season… Instead we are where we were before we picked him and that is with a big ????? At the QB position…. Al Davis simply has not been able to manage the Raiders since free agency, and has let several good players go due to such mismanagement.
Al Davis also can not secure a real NFL coach anymore. He’s made generous offers to Steve Whisenhunt, Bobby Petrino, and Sean Peyton, who’ve all rejected him. Huge contracts, in all 3 cases.

If this whole debate is about whether or not Nnamdi will stay in Oakland…thank Kevin Flynn, U really dont know what ur talking about.
1. you underate him as a player, if you think Charles Woodson is better than him (esp with him saying he would change to Saftey if Nnamdi came to Green Bay)
2.No one knows Nnamdi asking price, and yet everyones depicts him as a money driven person( which is the opposite)
3.Nnamdi owes Al more than people think, because he drafted him in the NFL and the guts to start him at CB, when he was a saftey in college. If he was drafted by other teams, he knows he may not be playing CB or even considered with such high regards
4. Al keeps the players he wants…AL will pay him 11-13mill a year and everyone will shut up

Raiders’ Buyback Of Kamerion Wimbley’s Contract May Be Illegal
By Chuck Carroll February 22, 2011 – 10:30 pm
The Oakland Raiders plan to re-sign Kamerion Wimbley may hit a snag.
Just hours after the team exercised the $3.5 million buyback option on the linebacker’s contract it came to light the such a move would be illegal.
The salary appears to be in violation of the NFL’s “30 percent rule,” which prevents a player’s salary from rising more than 30 percent over the previous season.
Wimbley’s 2010 base salary was $2.115 million. As pointed out by Adam Caplan of FOX Sports, a 30 percent increase would max out his 2011 salary at $2.75 million.
If the buyback is found to be in violation of the rule Wimbley will become an unrestricted free agent on March 4 when the current CBA expires and the new league year begins.

Anybody else interested in bringing in Shockey? I know he’s been hurt a ton, but we’ve hopefully got Zach Miller still around so he’d be more of a complementary guy that could be worked in strategically. Even more than his talent, which is immense when he’s healthy, is the fire and attitude he brings to an offense. I think we could use a guy with that kind of fight and fire. Grads and Louis Murphy are the only guys I can think of who bring any of that to the offense.
February 22nd, 2011 at 9:51 pm
I say no to bringing in an aging and unproductive tight end (Jeremy Shockey) NO WAY! Better to keep the budding Pro-Bowler going into his 4th year.

Solution to the Nnamdi contract issue.
Cut DHB and give Nnamdi his salary.

February 22nd, 2011 at 9:55 pm
Nnamdi Asomugha gives up 0 TDs in all his starts…
The rest of this defense gives up close to 30TDS.
So how in the hell does the defense get better losing Asomugha for some 5th round draft pick or scrub free agent?
Al had to draft Buchanan, Routt, Washington, Asomugha AND sign deAngelo Hall to find a cornerback….and its looking like the only thing the Raiders will have to show for it is Routt….a guy that contributed a lot to the 30 TDs given up in the air.
Cut DHB, send Gallery packing an low ball Huff…that should be enough for Asomugha to stay.
Better that than replace him with a bunch of marginal players

Agent: Willie Colon unlikely to return to Steelers
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on February 23, 2011, 9:37 AM EST
When we looked at Pittsburgh’s free agent priorities a few weeks ago, we ranked Lamarr Woodley, Ike Taylor, and Willie Colon as the three key guys Pittsburgh had to worry about.
Woodley has been given the franchise tag in the meantime. Taylor may get the transition tag.
That leaves Colon, Ben Roethlisberger’s Milledgeville partner and stalwart right tackle, possibly left out in the cold. Colon’s agent told Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that there is “little chance” Colon will be back in Pittsburgh.
Presumably, Colon’s agent only said that because the Steelers have made it clear they won’t pay his client what he thinks he’s worth. Colon is coming off a torn Achilles tendon, but he will only be 28 years old entering next season. He has a lot of experience at tackle and could conceivably kick inside to guard.
As long as there is free agency, Colon’s agent knows his best deal isn’t likely to be with Pittsburgh.

Much as I love Miller, for him to be leading in receiving is more of an indication of how bad most of Raiders WR’s are.
Don’t get me wrong he’s been really good but last yr was not a good year for him.
Keep Ford. maybe Murphy. Draft another Ford and look at free agents but don’t overpay for cr@p.
There’s a different mindset now. You can feel it.
Sadly there was a time when some (bungholes) felt justified in not trying while in Oakland. No one will stand for that now. They would eat you alive in that locker room.
Wiz has got those lineman lifting right now.
Strong players wreak violence and havoc. Are less likely to succumb to injury.
February 23rd, 2011 at 8:38 am
I worry about the miles on Zack Miller.
First off, he was on some crappy ASU teams getting beat up a lot while catching a ton of passes.
Than the same thing his first few years here as well. Attempting to catch Jamarcus Russell passes is like dog years for a TE.
You started to see a little of the effects last year, with the concussion and other nagging injuries. HIs production also slipped in the midst of all this (his numbers didn’t drop as much, but he dropped more passes last year than maybe the previous 3 years combined and looked awful blocking at times as well).
Unfortunately for Zack, I don’t see him playing much football in his 30’s.
February 23rd, 2011 at 8:44 am
JFB,
Zack is still young and ya he missed some time last year, but if he is 100% come camp it won’t matter. There’s no denying Russell took a couple of years off his career though, prlck!
