Fox: Wimbley gets word he’ll be a Raider in 2011

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011 at 7:07 am in Oakland Raiders.

Kamerion Wimbley, who led the Raiders in sacks and had his best season since his rookie season as one of the better trade acquisitions, has been informed he will remain in Oakland, according to Adam Caplan of FoxSports.com.

Wimbley’s original six year contract contained a void for the final year, but also included a “buy back” believed to be $3.5 million which the Raiders exercised.

Oakland dealt a third-round draft pick to Cleveland for Wimbley last March 14, played him as a starting strong side linebacker and a nickel pass rusher, and he responded with a team-high nine sacks as the Raiders had 47 for the season.

The Raiders must decide by Wednesday whether to use a franchise tag in 2011. Speculation has Zach Miller as the most likely target, although it’s uncertain if the Raiders will avail themselves of the designation this season.

If Miller were to be franchised, he would be due approximately $7.3 million this season. A four-year veteran, there is no guarantee Miller would be available for unrestricted free agency under a new collective bargaining agreement. The Raiders, however, would be on the hook for that figure even if a new CBA set unrestricted free agency at five or six years _ meaning they cost themselves a lot of money because they simply could have placed a restrictive tender on him and had the chance to match any offer.

Regardless, there’s no reason to believe Miller won’t be a Raider in 2011. Historically, Al Davis has been very good at keeping players he wants to keep. Miller has been the Raiders leading receiver each of the last four years since being a second-round draft pick out of Arizona State in 2007.

At present, the only other tight ends on the Oakland roster are Brandon Myers and Kevin Brock, the latter a reserve/future signing who spent time on the 2010 practice squad.

Bailey just re-uped with Denver for 4 years.

I just don’t see anyone outbidding Al for Nnamdi. Who else are we paying that we can’t afford him?

LOL. That’s 2. Let’s see if we can get a 3rd weird, senseless response to my point.
    —————————————————-
OK. Al does not go after FA’s as much anymore, even so if he does, it is almost low key. He is a maverik trader, aquirring players for draft round pick, and through the draft itself. Al has begun a new order of building a winning franchise, long term, slow and steady through the draft and trades, even giving up round picks. He is in it for the long haul now, after all we did go from 5-11 to 8-8 and really coulda been 10/11 wins if not for a hang-over and cold feet. His ex, the “we’re not losers anymore” guy got the ball rolling, just like Al had formulated, and now Al has put it all together for a run at the big one. He may take a late round QB cause he knows Campbell is not for the long haul, but we’ll wait and see how Farve the ex-packer/jet/viking is doing with his work on JC. But make no mistake, Al is building for the long haul, no more buy today/win today attitudes. Draft and build, meet the needs of the team. No more big names for big dollars like he used to do. Al has a good GM in place, and they are busy gettin’er done.

That is why Al is building with maverick trading and really good draft picks. He folded to the big buck/FA thing and now has decided to go long haul. I personally think his FA aquisitions have been not so stellar, but admit his draft picks have been good, as of late. He is building for the long haul, just wait and see. 81 years of football knowledge and you think he doesn’t realize this? C’mon man.

Even a blind squirrell will find a nut, but we are not a team of free agents. Good draft picks, maverick trading and a good GM and Al is ready for the long haul.

Management of free agency is not just signing free agents, it’s retaining those great, maverick players Al likes to draft. He doesn’t know how to, and many of them wind up elsewhere around the league when we have cap room for them here.

Flynn, I don’t have time to compile a list of every single good player Al allowed to get away via poor management of free agency in the past 20 years. So, I’m going to call your bluff instead by resting my case and letting independent readers of this blog decide for themselves. I think Al’s record since free agency says it all.

Give Al credit for pulling the trigger to draft McFadden and McClain…. Those are cornerstones in this franchise that alot of teams dream of having…. They both work very very hard and dominated in college big time…. Dmac is just plain fun to watch bursting thru the hole and his open field moved are down right nasty, his jukes and that stiff arm us like a joust… And don’t let him lower his shoulder the upper body strength is freakish…. This year he attacked the tackler almost every time…. Hands down our MVP, when he does good we are almost unstoppable…. As for McClain, he has showed versatility, had a sack and pick and did well against the run and has freakish power as well…. Next year he will show more domination if he can shoot gaps more frequently and not get sucked up by linemen like he did in the SF game when Gore broke the long 1

RMR, Al is not perfect. Every owner of all major sports franchises has made boneheaded dumbass mistakes during the course of their tenures. But Al has remained true to his colors, and has begun a reload/rebuilding process that will put the Raiders in the forefront of the NFL for years to come. He is now looking at the long haul and has the pieces in place. Al has admitted he has made mistakes, can you say Russell?, and that is the first sign of corrective measures, to admit your mistakes and make sure you do not repeat them again. Long Haul Al, gettin’er done.

You took this into a personal type converstation instead of keeping it civil. I don’t blame Al on the Jamarcass pick cuz everyone from Kiper and every other draft expert had that pick as well… And so did I, I was impressed by his play against Notre Dame and his combine work outs…. Man o man were we wrong…. If he panned out to play to hid potential we would have been in the post season this last season… Instead we are where we were before we picked him and that is with a big ????? At the QB position…. I got Campbell to step his game up this year or his career as a starter will be in serious jeopardy

  • http://www.aldavissucks.blogspot.com The Real MaddenRaider

Al Davis simply has not been able to manage the Raiders since free agency, and has let several good players go due to such mismanagement.

Al Davis also can not secure a real NFL coach anymore. He’s made generous offers to Steve Whisenhunt, Bobby Petrino, and Sean Peyton, who’ve all rejected him. Huge contracts, in all 3 cases.

If this whole debate is about whether or not Nnamdi will stay in Oakland…thank Kevin Flynn, U really dont know what ur talking about.
    1. you underate him as a player, if you think Charles Woodson is better than him (esp with him saying he would change to Saftey if Nnamdi came to Green Bay)
2.No one knows Nnamdi asking price, and yet everyones depicts him as a money driven person( which is the opposite)
3.Nnamdi owes Al more than people think, because he drafted him in the NFL and the guts to start him at CB, when he was a saftey in college. If he was drafted by other teams, he knows he may not be playing CB or even considered with such high regards
    4. Al keeps the players he wants…AL will pay him 11-13mill a year and everyone will shut up

Stefan is Steve Wisnewski’s nephew, not his son. With that being said I am sure Al would love to have him in the silver and black, especially when you consider that Steve is now an assistant offensive line coach for the Raiders. Stefan would be more than pleased to be working for his uncle!
