Headed for Indianapolis

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011 at 9:33 am in Oakland Raiders.

I’m traveling to Indianapolis today to cover the NFL scouting combine Thursday through Sunday.

I’ll be checking in with occasional blog posts as well as daily stories for the print product, covering the Raiders and 49ers (although I’ll keep the 49ers updates off this medium).

Rumor has it my Southwest flight has Internet service . . .

Just cant get into the draft without a 1st round pick.

  2. bcz24 Says:

How is that 30% rule possible? When these guys hit big time contracts after their rookie contract it has to be more than a %30 raise. Vincent Jackson made $800,000 last year and his franchise tag this year is over $9 million! Thats over a 1000% pay increase…

  3. Dakota Says:

    Deron Williams to NJ!

Would have looked better in purple and gold.

  4. Just Fire Baby Says:

I’m with you Bcz24, I’m pretty positive players get 30% pay increases frequently.

Has to be something about the team/player option or something like that.

Hell, when we franchised Nnamdi and Seymour, they got 30% pay increases. Same thing when we re-signed Seabass.

VJax is the best example I could come up with, he made less than 1 million last year, and will make over 9 million this year.

Troy Murphy back in Golden State.

Really cornering the market on unathletic, white Power Forwards we are.

    Amundson, Lee and Murphy.

    Good grief.

  8. Dakota Says:

If a player earns a contract that is 5 years and pays him a total of $20 Million, he counts $4 million per year against the cap, right?

Answer: If it were only that simple.

Teams with heavy payloads learned quickly that the best way to combat the Salary Cap was to circumvent it. They did this by back loading contracts, pushing all of the big money to the end of the contract. For example, a 5-year, $20 million contract (not counting a signing bonus) signed in 2005 as described above could possibly allocate the money in the following manner:

Year 1 (2006): $450,000 (min. cap given to players with 4+ years experience)
    Year 2 (2007): $1 million
    Year 3 (2008): $1.5 million
    Year 4 (2009): $5 million
    Year 5 (2010): $12 million

Note: I have provided this example to reflect another important point. With the 2010 season being uncapped, there are special rules governing how much money can be pushed into the future. In reality, a contract like the one listed above is NOT actually valid under the present set of circumstances, since the final year is currently set to be an uncapped season. The contract would not be allowed as it would have specifically violated the league’s “30% Rule”. The “30% Rule” governs veteran contracts that are entered into in a capped year and extend into the final year of the CBA. The rule states that these contracts cannot have an annual increase of more than 30% of the salary, excluding amounts treated as a signing bonus, provided for in the FINAL CAPPED YEAR. If the CBA is not extended, then 2009 will be the final capped year and this contract would not be valid.

  10. KoolKell Says:

They’re not getting crap out of Biedrens, and I expected more out of D Lee, too.

  11. DMAC Says:

    Vegas,
At least Murph can rebound. Thats what he can do.

  12. DMAC Says:

Lee is doing fine Kell. Its Beans who’s underachieving. Trade his ass for Nene.

  13. KoolKell Says:

    Murph can shoot too.

  14. DMAC Says:

I think he’s a nice addition off the bench. Our bench sux.
+ we still need a back up point guard. We should of kept CJ.

  15. Just Fire Baby Says:

I like Lee, I actually like him a lot.

But he is so unathletic defensively.

Great instincts and hands masks it a little.

Beans is going through a Steve Sax situation with his FT shooting. He doesn’t want the ball, and when he gets it, he either passes it or shoots it immediately.

  16. DMAC Says:

Beans needs to listen to Barry and go w/ the under hand free throws.

  17. Just Fire Baby Says:

Beans got hurt last year, and it came back to me on a good source he was enjoying the Euro Techno scene a tad too much, if you catch my drift.

  18. DMAC Says:

    Hey Vegas,
    You still here?

  19. DMAC Says:

You seem to be pretty good at stuff like this?

I don’t understand. Why would you trade two expiring contracts for one expiring contract, only to buy-out and release that player?

  20. DMAC Says:

Broncos re-signed CB Champ Bailey on a four-year, $43 million extension.

  21. DMAC Says:

“All indications” are the Bengals will not use the franchise tag by Thursday’s deadline.

  22. DMAC Says:

    Sign Joseph in Nnamdi walks.

  23. YoungAmerican Says:

Denver is paying Bailey $15 million for 2011, which means Nnamdi will be looking for more than that.

Time to go after Joseph, Cromartie, or Richard Marshall.

    http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/11053/1127051-143.stm

  26. chuck Says:

We might be able to sign everyone we need because we don’t have a top 10 pick this year and the only free agents we need are our own.

  27. dickv Says:

    Chuck,

you are right about that. I beleive the only FA that were worth the big $ were Logan mankins & Ngata and both men were tagged. At that point it’s better to draft.

Wimberly, Seymour, Miller, Satele, Micheal Bush Stanford Routt, and Langston Walker were the most crucial. Huff is solid but I perosnally want to see more of Stevie Brown.

Now that champ got his $15 milly that defintately takes Nnamdi out of the eqaution. If the team can bring back those 7 FA, and keep finding gems in the draft, the raiders will be fine and continue on the momentum that they built last year.

  28. bcz24 Says:

Champs contract doesnt take Nnamdi out of the mix. He is still getting less than 11 mill per year of the deal, Nnamdi can get a 4 year 50 mill deal, and be closed.

  29. bcz24 Says:

So Wimbleys deal is valid, according to what Dakota posted, because he is gaining more than a 30% raise but it isnt from a capped year to an uncapped year. The quote from Dakota says it would be a problem from a capped year to an uncapped year.

im with you there. hopefully we can find some talent in later rounds. which lately it seems is where we find all our talent

  31. Carl Weathers Says:

Just read this over at BSPN:

would the Oakland Raiders receive any compensation if cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha leaves through free agency.

BW: Yes, the Raiders would receive a compensatory pick in the 2012 draft. It would very likely be the No. 97 overall pick, at the end of the third round. The highest compensatory pick is a third-round pick.

I feel he isn’t going anywhere because, from what I’ve read over the years, I think he would really love to be a part of this teams turn around and return to the playoffs. Plus, he’s only ever played football in Cali.

  32. Carl Weathers Says:

I added that last part, not hungry Billy…

And we also swapped a future first rounder (lottery protected) for a 2nd rounder.

Doesn’t make any sense to me, but I am sure they had to save some money some way in this deal.

Yeah, thats what I thought. It has to come down to saving $$$.

This guy would be a solid Raiders pick in like Round 5 or 6.

He is multi-talented, he looks like he wants to hit someone and is eager to block at all costs and can open and catch the football.

Ricardo Lockette plans to break Combine 40 record
Posted by Evan Silva on February 23, 2011, 5:00 PM EST
Fort Valley State receiver/return specialist Ricardo Lockette is one of the top candidates for the fastest forty time at the Combine, in large part because of his track background.

The 6-foot-2, 207-pound prospect is a former National Champion in the 100 meters, and ran track throughout his college career. He put on record a 4.35 forty at Fort Valley State, although Lockette’s plan is to run at least a tenth of a second faster in Indianapolis.

“I’m shooting for the mid-4.2s,” Lockette told PFT Wednesday. “Hopefully, I can get the record.”

The record Lockette is speaking of is the fastest forty time in NFL Combine history. Since the Combine became a media-friendly event in the late 1990s to early 2000s, Rondel Melendez of Eastern Kentucky and Chris Johnson of East Carolina have run the fastest, tying at 4.24.

Breaking the record is “definitely one of my goals,” Lockette promised, adding that he’s been timed recently as fast as 4.26 and 4.27. Lockette hopes a record-breaking forty time will vault his draft stock anywhere from the second- to fifth-round range.

Originally an Auburn commit, Lockette bounced around colleges and finished up in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. He averaged 24.0 yards per kickoff return last season, and caught 23 passes for 262 yards with one touchdown.

Despite the underwhelming production, Lockette is CBS Sports draft analyst Chad Reuter’s favorite to run the best forty this weekend.

Former Cowboys center Ben Fricke dies at 35
Posted by Michael David Smith on February 23, 2011, 7:33 PM EST
Ben Fricke, who played center for the Dallas Cowboys from 1999 to 2001, has died of colon cancer. He was 35.

FOX 26 in Houston confirmed Fricke’s passing with Mark Howard, the football coach at Centennial High School in Frisco, Texas, where Fricke had been working as an assistant coach.

“Ben passed away [Monday] from colon cancer,” Howard said. “I’ve known Ben for three years and gave him his first high school coaching job. It’s like we’ve had a death in the family. That’s what I told the team.”

Coming out of high school Fricke got a scholarship to the University of Houston as a defensive lineman. But he moved to offense and became an All-American center. He was drafted by the Giants and spent a season in NFL Europe before catching on with the Cowboys.

Fricke is survived by his wife and two children

The Indiana Attorney General’s Office announced today that Deputy AG Jeffrey Cox is “no longer employed” by the office following a colloquy between Cox and Mother Jones journalist Adam Weinstein on Twitter over the weekend.

It started when Cox, who is known as “JCCentCom” on Twitter, responded to a Mother Jones tweet about the possibility that riot police would be dispatched to clear protesters Wisconsin with the exhortation to “use live ammunition.”

Weinstein, who at that point did not know the identity of JCCentCom, explains what happened next:

From my own Twitter account, I confronted the user, JCCentCom. He tweeted back that the demonstrators were “political enemies” and “thugs” who were “physically threatening legally elected officials.” In response to such behavior, he said, “You’re damned right I advocate deadly force.” He later called me a “typical leftist,” adding, “liberals hate police.”

Mother Jones subsequently discovered that Cox maintained a blog, Pro Cynic, that contained regular Nazi analogies and the like.

Following the publication of the magazine’s article, the AG’s office reviewed Cox’s statements and found them too much to handle.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) – On a prank call that quickly spread across the Internet, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker was duped into discussing his strategy to cripple public employee unions, promising never to give in and joking that he would use a baseball bat in his office to go after political opponents.

Walker believed the caller was a conservative billionaire named David Koch, but it was actually the editor of a liberal online newspaper. The two talked for at least 20 minutes _ a conversation in which the governor described several potential ways to pressure Democrats to return to the Statehouse and revealed that his supporters had considered secretly planting people in pro-union protest crowds to stir up trouble.

The call, which surfaced Wednesday, also showed Walker’s cozy relationship with two billionaire brothers who have poured millions of dollars into conservative political causes, including Walker’s campaign last year.

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today criticized remarks made by Glenn Beck on his radio program, in which he compared Reform Judaism to radicalized Islam, as “highly offensive and outrageous.”

During his February 22 radio show, Beck described Reform rabbis as “generally political in nature.

“It’s almost like Islam, radicalized Islam in a way … radicalized Islam is less about religion than it is about politics … When you look at the Reform Judaism, it is more about politics.”

Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, issued the following statement:

Glenn Beck’s comparison of Reform Judaism to radical Islam demonstrates his bigoted ignorance. Despite his feeble attempt to suggest that he was not equating Reform Judaism with Islamic extremist terrorism, the simple fact that he would mention them in the same breath is highly offensive and outrageous.

The truth is that every religious body has religious points of view, whether one agrees with them or not. To compare Reform Judaism, which supports democratic institutions, to Islamic extremism, which supports anti-democratic movements and the repression of basic rights – including, for example, the denial of women’s rights – is beyond the pale.

Glenn Beck has no right to discount the faith of any people, and he should think twice before commenting on something he doesn’t know much about. He owes the Reform movement an apology.

Joe Flacco led the league in holding on to the ball
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on February 23, 2011, 7:18 PM EST
You hear announcers say it all the time: “That sack was on the quarterback.”

So which quarterbacks hold on to the ball the most? According to a report by J.J. Cooper of Fanhouse, Joe Flacco was the biggest culprit in terms of self-inflicted sacks in 2010, with Ben Roethlisberger an unsurprising second.

Cooper watched every sack from the 2010 season, and counted how many times the quarterback held the ball longer than three seconds. Granted, this isn’t scientific. But quarterbacks know they have to release the ball in three seconds or they will be toast.

(SI’s Peter King wrote a great column on this topic before the season. The average quarterback releases the ball in 2.4 seconds.)

Flacco led the league with 25 sacks in which he held the ball over three seconds. Flacco needs to get rid of the ball quicker, although we’d argue Baltimore’s slow receivers are a major cause of the problem. The rest of the top five doesn’t contain many surprises: Roethlisberger, Jay Cutler, Michael Vick, and Jason Campbell.

Getting rid of the ball is definitely a skill. Consider that Roethlisberger only took 12 sacks where he held the ball three seconds or less. That’s fewer than Eli Manning and Peyton Manning took.

While Flacco and Roethlisberger took 45 combined sacks where they held the ball for more than three seconds, the Manning brothers only had one apiece.

    That’s on the quarterback.

With one day to go, 12 franchise tags have been applied
Posted by Mike Florio on February 23, 2011, 10:58 PM EST
The deadline for applying franchise and transition tenders expires at 4:00 p.m. ET on Thursday.

A full 13 days into the two-week period, a dozen teams have applied the franchise tag.

The franchise players for 2011 are: Jets linebacker David Harris, Patriots guard Logan Mankins, Steelers linebacker LaMarr Woodley, Browns kicker Phil Dawson, Ravens defensive tackle Haloti Ngata, Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, Jaguars tight end Marcedes Lewis, Chiefs defensive end Tamba Hali, Chargers receiver Vincent Jackson, Eagles quarterback Mike Vick, Vikings linebacker Chad Greenway, and Panthers center Ryan Kalil, Falcons.

That’s 12 franchise players, with Eagles kicker David Akers receiving the transition tag.

And more could get the tag before the close of business Thursday.

The union continues to believe that the tags aren’t valid. It remains to be seen whether the union files a former claim aimed at overturning the franchise tenders that have not yet been accepted by the players who received them

  192. confucius400 Says:

al davis should get the franchise tag al is the raiders.

  193. djohnnyg Says:

Raiders DC ‘by committee’ is ridiculous. Nobody ever does that. Heck, make Rod Woodson the DC if you have to.

You’d think we’d at least be hearing some buzz about who it might be.

Are they ever gonna let Breshnahan know that HE is the DC or NOT tell him so they don’t have to pay him for that?

  194. confucius400 Says:

al davis is at the combine and has run a 4.3 40

  195. djohnnyg Says:

I’m guessing that Breshnahan IS the DC and the Raiders just don’t feel it neccessary to tell the media OR post it on their website.

What else could it be? The combine is here right? Shouldn’t they be sending their DC to this?

  196. djohnnyg Says:

Maybe it’s NOT important to have a DC anyway.

    Heck, what do I know.

  197. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

Al Davis’s current 40 time is 1 hour and 36 minutes.

  198. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

    And that’s on the scooter.

  199. djohnnyg Says:

DC’s are just pesky annoyances anyways. They just get in the way.

  200. SnB Production Says:

They better get a DC. someone is going to have to scheme a way to get a defense that gave up close to 2 TD passes a game much better with loss of Nnamdi…a guy that didn’t give up any pass Tds.

I see a lot of Jacksonville like games in the future for this defense

  201. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

I know. Having defenders in position to make plays and catching quarterbacks off guard with exotic blitzes is really annoying.

  202. djohnnyg Says:

Well, this is ALL on Al this year. By firing Cable and saying 8-8 isn’t good enuff in his world he is saying the Raiders are MUCH better than that so I fully expect an AFC West crown and a playoff win at the very least.

Only 19 more weeks till the first pre-season game.

  203. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

LOL. It’s not all on Al this year. Him and his minions will find another scapegoat after the team tanks.

  204. Just Fire Baby Says:

So Jason Campbell led the NFL in fewest yards per attempted pass, all the while being in the top 5 for holding onto the ball the longest.

Pretty amazing that are offense was still able to run the ball with all that nonsense.

To quote our good buddy Raiderman99:

    JaJason sucks

Next years team will be hindered by QB play, just like we were this year. It just came as a suprise last year that we were somewhat relevant and 8-8.

With a season of expectations ahead of us next year, Soup will have us all pulling out our hair by week 6.

  205. djohnnyg Says:

True. But how many people are really gonna buy that? If the team goes from 8-8 to 4-12 how can anybody NOT blame Al?

You make progress, than fire the coach, and you tank. My gosh that has to be obvious on who the blame should be on.

  206. Just Fire Baby Says:

Holding onto the ball forever, and than throwing it short ALL THE TIME, just proved my belief that Campbell has his “go-to” move, of holding onto the ball forever, going with a huge pump fake…….and dumping the ball off in the flat.

He does it all the time.

    Not exactly Al Davis football.

  207. YoungAmerican Says:

At least next year’s QB class in the draft will be better than this year’s.

  208. confucius400 Says:

“Jason came a long way in the year 2010,” Davis said. “He reminds me of Jim Plunkett, …

  209. djohnnyg Says:

If the Raiders stink this year, any “Al love” I have left in the tank will be gone.

I know in the grand scheme of things that means nothing to nobody, but all the same…

Tennessee Receives NCAA Notice of Allegations; Lane Kiffin Cited.By Clay Travis
Senior NCAA Writer | The NCAA has cited former Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin with a failure to monitor charge in a Notice of Allegations letter released by the University of Tennessee on Wednesday. Overall, the school was charged with 9 major violations, two in football — both tied to Kiffin — and seven in basketball.

The story was first reported here by FanHouse earlier this month.

Kiffin has also been hit with a failure to promote an atmosphere of compliance charge. The levying of these two charges against the former coach rather than the Vol program represents a last-minute appeal by Tennessee to avoid the saddling of the program itself with the penalties. Instead, Tennessee deftly stepped aside and served up the head of Kiffin to the NCAA.

Meanwhile Bruce Pearl, head basketball coach of the University of Tennessee was cited by the NCAA for, per the UT release, “impermissible contact with prospective student-athletes during an unofficial visit, acting contrary to the principles of ethical conduct, failure to promote an atmosphere of compliance, and failure to monitor the activities regarding compliance of all assistant coaches within the men’s basketball program.”

The majority of these charges stem from Pearl’s lying about having junior recruits over to his house for a barbeque. Hosting juniors at the home of a head coach is a secondary violation, but Pearl’s lie made the matter a major violation that led to a dock in pay, an eight-game SEC suspension, and more punishment to come, potentially, from the NCAA.

While Tennessee declined comment other than posting the letter, Pat Haden, the athletic director at USC, released this statement in support of Kiffin:

“We have received from the NCAA a notice of allegations against Lane Kiffin pertaining to his tenure as the head football coach at Tennessee. The NCAA enforcement process provides for Tennessee and Lane to address those charges. Until that process is completed, it would be unfair and premature for me or USC to comment on this matter.”

“However, I will say this: Since his return to USC last year as our head football coach, Lane has been vigilant in making sure he and the football program follow the NCAA’s rules and compete the right way. Lane has my support as our head football coach.”

For his part, Kiffin, who declined comment when FanHouse broke this story, released the following statement: “On the advice of my legal counsel, we cannot comment other than to say we look forward to working through the process with the NCAA.”

Tennessee will have 90 days to respond to the NCAA’s notice of allegations and then will appear before the Committee on Infractions in early June

  227. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

I wouldn’t even know who Lane Kiffin was had it not been for Al Davis hiring him and saying he’s better than Jon Gruden.

Having kids is big business for the lower class trash of this country… Look at the tax refunds they get. I have an employee that had a kid in late december and was able to claim him on his taxes for last year, and he got over a $5000 refund, I know damn well he didnt pay that much in taxes. His refund exceeded his payments (he made money on taxes) and the kicker is, his girlfriend is on state aid getting just about everything for the baby paid for! It makes me sick. Keys to watch for:

    1) Of course the speed guys. Not the marque names, but the fringe guys in later rounds will surely be on Al’s radar.

    2) Weigh-in of Wiz 2.0 . Didn’t go to the Senior Bowl, and I question the 310 pounds that PSU listed him as.

    3) Locker and Mallet, the big arm guys. If these guys are around in Round 2, Al and Hue will surely take a look. The combine however, is where these two should shine.

    4) See if Cam Newton can keep his mouth shut enough to not further the perception amongst some of being a little too arrogant for their liking.

    5) The annual senior bowl failed drug test guys. Always fun to see.
