Cartwright done, Henderson close
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, February 24th, 2011 at 4:11 pm in Oakland Raiders.
The Raiders’ flurry of activity before the end of the league year Thursday continued as they agreed to terms with special teams standout and backup running back Rock Cartwright and were nearing an agreement with defensive tackle John Henderson.
Cartwright’s signing was confirmed by a team source. He said on his Twitter page Wednesday he was returning to the Bay Area and to “re-sign with the silver and black. Henderson’s agreement was intitially reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter as a two-year, $4 million deal.
Correction to an earlier post _ the Raiders confirmed Kamerion Wimbley’s status as the franchise player, but have not confirmed the new riches bestowed upon cornerback Stanford Routt. The Raiders made note in their release about the buyback in Wimbley’s contract disallowed by the league.
However, an e-mail was sent out by Raiders public relations early in the day showing how Routt stacked up in terms of completion percentage in an ESPN blog which ran some time ago. No explanation, given, just under the heading of “FYI.”
If they choose, the Raiders could seek to fight the league ruling, but the moment Wimbley signs the tender, he is guaranteed the reported $10.1 million. And protesting the ruling would only serve to unnecessarily alienate Wimbley.
The best course of action for both parties is a longterm deal which Wimbley’s agent Joe Linta said has been in the works in recent days.

So why doesn’t Routt’s contract violate the 30% rule?
February 24th, 2011 at 4:14 pm
Remember when Cable gave Routt props of playing better because he was preparing like a Pro, and Routt told the press he had not changed a thing and was preparing like past years? Thats why Routt will never get to Nnamdi’s level.
February 24th, 2011 at 4:17 pm
The Raiders set themselves backward today in one of the worst contract deals since Tommy Kelly and DHB.
Routt could be had for 1/3 what he’s getting. A guy that gave up 5TD passes…the point is to not overpay for guys.
Was Routt EVEN CLOSE to Pro-Bowl consideration? Was he the guy “to watch out for”? Is he at the Revis, Asomugha, Bailey, Woodson level….not even close
Routt is a decent #2 and NO MORE!
So now he’s a number 1? Give me a break. WHo the hell is the number 2?
Overpaid THAT MUCH for a guy who’s just a guy!
No new adds…same damn defense that got SCORCHED down the stretch and against any decent team! Give me abreak.
Philip Rivers, Matt Cassell and whoever QBs Denver is elated right now.
Routt and some UNKNOWN at the corners! A brand new FS!
HOpe the offense can score….cause this defense won’t be stopping anything
February 24th, 2011 at 4:17 pm
Kam Routt had a decent contract year, and Davis, faced with losing the better player, overpays the latter player.
February 24th, 2011 at 4:19 pm
Should have just overpaid the beast on the other side that shut things down and gave up ZERO TDS.
Another question for the intelligentsia.
If Nnamdi gave up 0 TDs and Routt is a $10MM beast and Huff had a renaissance….
WHO THE HELL GAVE UP THE OTHER 25TDS+?
Man!
Let’s go offense!
Still can’t stop the run either!
February 24th, 2011 at 4:19 pm
Baffonery!
February 24th, 2011 at 4:21 pm
If we resign Huff, Bush, Gallery and Nnamdi (assuming they want to be here) then I don’t care if we overpaid Routt. But if it means not being able to retain Nnamdi because of it, what an idiotic decision
February 24th, 2011 at 4:21 pm
Just bad General Managing right there. Even if Routt is a top 3 corner (he’s paid like one)…you could have just paid him a more modest $5MM (LOL) and had more than enough cash to actually IMPROVE this defense
February 24th, 2011 at 4:22 pm
$10MM a year? You’ve gotta be freekn kiddin me!
February 24th, 2011 at 4:24 pm
Just ridiculous no matter how you look at it.
So who’s the number 2….LOL
February 24th, 2011 at 4:26 pm
Not really sure I would have franchised Wimbley either. He’s a decent player…but again, did he just take over games?
Al Davis spends way too much money.
I hope it doesn’t take Stanford Routt as long to play to his new contract than it did for Tommy Kelly!
February 24th, 2011 at 4:26 pm
Wimbley is a tweener with pass rushing skills. For all the beef we added to the LB corps we still sucked against the run. The passrush improved though. Is Wimbley worth 10 mill? If he gets 10+ sacks per season, I guess he is.
February 24th, 2011 at 4:26 pm
Stanford Routt and Chris Johnson…or Walter McFadden.
Good Lawd
February 24th, 2011 at 4:29 pm
Macho Man,
I am still trying to figure out how the team gets better letting the guy who gave up 0 pass TDs and locked down his side go….and replacing him with Walter McFadden/Chris Johnson?
Unless the scheme changes or there is more pressure up front…not buying it….math doesn’t work.
And if you are going to over pay by $7MM…..then give it to the guy getting things done.
I assure you that if Routt hit the free agency market…he would not have been the #1 target in free agency.
Somebody on that defensive staff better be working overtime…because last year ain’t cutting it!

Owner/GM/DC, is too much for an 81 yr old invalid.

Routt sucks. Always has. The only thing he does with any consistency is give up huge touchdown plays. What a terrible move.
February 24th, 2011 at 4:31 pm
Hey, I thought Routt was the 3rd CB on the team. To give him 10 mill per is not very smart. but these are the raidehs, what you gonna do?

=====================================================
The number of high round draft picks wasted to find the type of player like Asomugha…the free agent sigining of deAngelo Hall…and the Raiders end up overpaying by $7MM for Routt.
You can expect 3 of the next 4 high draft picks to be spent on CBs if history holds true

I remember the KC game in 2009 when Asomugha was shutting down Dwayne Bowe…Asomugha had to sit out a play and Routt then got scorched for some 40 yards down field……I still have visions of Tebow’s TD pass in the corner of the end zone…Walter McFadden getting torn down by CHAD HENNE
And don’t forget the Big Nickle defense against Jax.
Not looking good on defense….I see a lot of 31 – 28 type games next year

February 24th, 2011 at 4:37 pm
The reason the Raiders suck at stopping the run has very little to do with personnel. It’s because a scheme that doesn’t emphasize gap discipline.
February 24th, 2011 at 4:37 pm
Routt is a PI specialist. Godspeed Rod Woodson, work that miracle.
February 24th, 2011 at 4:37 pm
HAve done NOTHING to improve the run defense so far….so the Raiders still have that albatross around their collective necks~
If they simply re-signed Routt to $3MM I would be cool.
But to overpay him BY THAT MUCH is ridiculous.
Hell, if Routt wanted to walk…let him go and get someone else.
You don’t get better replacing guys like Asomugha with guys like Chris Johnson/Walter McFadden.
Probably going to have to find a FS too.
I would move Branch to FS and sign Sanders

Expect more Jax games

Giving Routt that amount of money, when he would NOT have received it anywhere else is STUPIDITY!!
Jesus Ch**#t!
One step forward and two steps back….always with the old looney man Al!
He should be giving that money to Nnamdi and Huff….not some guy who gets burned and the refs love to call pass intereference penalties on!
Ugh.
February 24th, 2011 at 4:39 pm
Woodson stepped into a mess!
I don’t care about anything else but the fact that Davis WASTED all that money on Routt….
You could have done A LOT with the $7MM that could have been saved by using some common sense at the negotiating table.
February 24th, 2011 at 4:40 pm
Branch has never been a FS. Doesn’t have the skills to be a FS. That would be disastrous.
Jarrad Page, Dashon Goldson, and OJ Atogwe are all free agents. Sands and Gilchrest will be available in the draft. Any of those would be better options than moving Branch or Mitchell to FS.
If Huff walks, the Raiders need to bring someone in to compete with Stevie Brown. Preferably a veteran.
February 24th, 2011 at 4:41 pm
YoungAmerican,
The real answer unfortunately is going to be the offense putting up a ton of points.
You can’t fix this mess
February 24th, 2011 at 4:42 pm
Man, if Al paid 10 mill for Routt, what in the hell is he going to pay Gallery? Routt is a 2nd round pick, Gallery is a 2nd overall pick, Gallery might just get Peyton Manning money! LOL, you know he could.
February 24th, 2011 at 4:42 pm
man, reading posts in here, with all of the fretting and hand-wringing and aspersions cast about players and contracts (ain’t your dollars) is like being surrounded by a bunch of black-shawled old widows who have nothing left but to uber-piously denegrate everything around them in an effort to seem holier-than-thou-art and drag everyone else down into the treacherous hole those gals are in.

He gives Stan Routt 10 mill per, and won’t even pay a quality Defensive Coordinator.
February 24th, 2011 at 4:48 pm
Stanford Route shouldn’t even be making 2nd string nickleback cash. Could you imagine the Patriots paying a loser like him $15 mil a year? Hell, do they even pay Brady that much? Pathetic…
February 24th, 2011 at 4:50 pm
That all sounds about right. Champ Bailey making $15 milly, Nnamdi will make close to $20 mil; paying rout $10 mill a year is right. That article that Bill Williamson wrote “no burn zone in Oakland” talked a lot about how Chris Johnson and Stanford Routt are some of the best Cb’s in the league when it comes to their man’s completion %…
February 24th, 2011 at 4:54 pm
I am all for guys getting paid, but you gotta have enough to sign new guys to make us better! Routt and Wimby just hit the Super Lotto!
February 24th, 2011 at 4:54 pm
Rock, John Henderson, Seymour, wimberly, Stanford Routt, all locked in.
Raiders need to secure Langston Walker, Samson Satele, Miller, and Bush and the Raiders will have done a solid job in bringing back their own guys. Huff, Nnamdi, and Gallery probably won’t be worth the price tag they ask.
February 24th, 2011 at 4:55 pm
What the word on bob Sanders… I would pay Bob Sanders huff’s $ for the 8 games he usually plays. He is injury prone, but he is a difference maker when healthy.

I have no answer as to why athletes are paid more than elementary school teachers, and the leeches of society – politicians, lawyers and consultants are paid or extort king’s ransoms for their time, except that the systems involved are crooked.
February 24th, 2011 at 4:59 pm
I’m not surprised at all. 10 million is not top CB $. 20 million guaranteed over 3 year isn’t some record setting deal at all.
February 24th, 2011 at 4:59 pm
I had read that Routt would be coveted in Free Agency because he held up under fire on the opposite side of Nnamdi. Wimberly had 9 sacks this past season. The ability to get to the QB makes him a hot commodity. The Raiders watched as Chris Clemmons make an impact for Seattle this year, and I bet they felt that Wimberly is a much beter & diverse player than Clemmons.

February 24th, 2011 at 5:09 pm
The Raiders have been in the business of overpaying players recently, and haven’t stopped at Richard Seymour and Stanford Routt.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the team has re-signed defensive tackle John Henderson to a two-year, $8 million contract.
The financial commitment doesn’t seem like much, but it’s probably more than Henderson would’ve gotten on the open market. The declining, 10-year veteran didn’t record a sack last season and missed seven games with stress fracture in his foot. Henderson collected $1 million in 2010.
Owner Al Davis, somehow, found Henderson’s performance worthy of a raise.

Routt was given a 1st a 3rd round RFA tender last year. That was the basically a franchise tag. To give him 7 million a year guarnteed is nothing to cry about. If he reaches the incentives and bumps it up to 10 million a year, than can only be good for us.

That core alone will get us 8-9 wins if they perform like they did last season. And that’s assuming the Raiders stand pat on the offensive line and on defense. To beat elite teams? The Raiders need to improve the weaker areas of the team measurably.

10 mill a yr is alot for routt and i think everyone can agree. but my question is if he was worth that kinda of money, then having a 10mill dollor cb on one side and PB nnamdi on the other would be the best cb tandem… If al loses Nnamdi, which against popular belief, I think he still stays. this will set the Raiders back another 3-4 yrs
February 24th, 2011 at 5:27 pm
if the GM position is too overwhelming for an 81 year old man, it apparently must be for all of the 30, 40, 50-something ones as well. Otherwise the Jets and the Jags and the Browns and the Bengals and the Lions and the Bears and the Chargers and the Chiefs and the Broncos and the Redskins and the Cowboys and the Eagles and the Dolphins and the Vikings and the Whiners and the Cardinals and the Seahawks and the Texans and the Titans and the Bills and the Falcons and the Panthers all would’ve been Super Bowl winners in the past decade or so.
NOT.
February 24th, 2011 at 5:28 pm

And didn’t we have a good 3 or 4 year run under Gruden since Al was 70?
February 24th, 2011 at 5:40 pm
Wimbley & Routt are young and their best years are ahead of them. Seymour has production and leadership, something we haven’t had on defense for a long time, well worth the money.
The Henderson deal is a head scratcher, we could have got him cheaper if we waited a while.
Just need to resign Huff & go after Johnathan Joseph and D is set. The big money of to retain our free agents on the D.
Need to sign Miller on the offense to a deal asap and the draft will address the O line, RT, C and LG.
Continuity on defense will give big results and bigger and younger on the O line.
February 24th, 2011 at 5:41 pm
73. Campbell may not even start next season. Very little football experience and none at guard till last season.

7 million a year for a CB who had numbers rivaling Revis isn’t a good deal?

According to a league source, the following numbers are in line with what the NFLPA expects franchise tags to equate to in 2011, assuming they are upheld in the next CBA:
Quarterbacks: $16 million ($16.4 million in 2010)
Running backs: $9.5 million ($8.15 million in 2010)
Wide receivers: $11.3 million ($9.5 million in 2010)
Tight ends: $7.3 million ($5.9 million in 2010)
Offensive linemen: $10.1 million ($10.7 million in 2010)
Defensive ends: $12.9 million ($12.4 million in 2010)
Defensive tackles: $12.5 million ($7 million in 2010)
Linebackers: $10 million ($9.7 million in 2010)
Cornerbacks: $14 million ($9.6 million in 2010)
Safeties: $8.8 million ($6.5 million in 2010)
Kickers: $3.1 million ($2.8 million in 2010)
February 24th, 2011 at 5:52 pm
It’s 30 million over 3, with 20 guaranteed, ok?
A longtime Al Davis favorite because of his 4.3 wheels, Routt was a priority with the Raiders set to lose Nnamdi Asomugha to free agency. Turning 28 this July, Routt was overpaid at just over $3M last season, so the Raiders wouldn’t be smart to exceed that number on an annual basis. They almost certainly will, though. Routt has two interceptions in his last 47 games (20 starts).

That’s not 7 million per year, so quit your damned lying.
February 24th, 2011 at 5:57 pm
ANALYSIS
Plain and simple; Routt was given starter money and is likely expected to take on a bigger role in the Raiders’ secondary. Champ Bailey, who recently re-signed with the Denver Broncos, will average roughly $11 million per campaign. Oakland vastly overpaid for an inconsistent player who looks good in uniform, has all the vitals you want in a talent, but does not perform and has not played like a cornerback about to earn $20 million the next two years.
This move also spells the end of Nnamdi Asomugha’s tenure with Oakland. The Raiders can’t expect to fork over adequate compensation to the All Pro corner after making it rain on Routt and surely not after setting the bar with Asomugha’s last deal. And even if Asomugha wants to stay and agrees to a hometown discount, how much money will it take to lock up two defensive backs with their other key free agents still foundering and the club needing to upgrade certain other spots of their roster?
Routt’s contract will only be justified if he plays Pro Bowl caliber football through 16-games. That’s a huge question mark, and if his contract is a main reason why Asomugha heads elsewhere, that will be a tough pill to swallow for Raider fans.

Well all of our front 7 is in tact from last year.
Wimbley and Trevor Scott will be our pass rush. Groves should be much better year 2 at LB, as should McClain.
Just bring back Mr Huff and our defense should be just fine. Should see some more blitzes and pressures from our LBs with Breshnahan back in the mix.

The numbers don’t lie ,routt was #3 in the nfl in completion percentage behind revis and aso.He had a lot more balls thrown at him than they did so to stand up to that in his 1st year as starter was pretty good.We need to look at what he did and not compare him to Nnamdi because that would make anyone look bad outside of revis.

I think this blog needs a fresh dose of reality…
The Raiders are not the Patriots. What I mean by that is unlike the Patriots, Al is trying to win without regards to how he achieves that goal. The Patriots management wants to win, but they also want to do it by getting the best value for their money spent (see Richard Seymour and currently Logan Mankins). They want to win, but they want to win the Patriot way.
The point is that money apparently has no meaning to Al at this point in his life. It is only a means to an end, nothing else. Do you really think a man who knows that he could die at basically any time cares whether or not he overpaid by 10-15% to keep players around so that he can get one last shot to win it?
Stop being upset that your team isn’t “winning” the offseason by paying free agents at market value or below. If you were expecting anything different than you will probably be disappointed when you see the next contract he doles out.
February 24th, 2011 at 6:45 pm

February 24th, 2011 at 7:02 pm
Another thing is that all of these deals are short term deals. As with any contract or negotiation, you will most likely have to pay more for shorter term deals and you usually get discounts for longer term deals.
So would you rather have Routt at 5 years for 40 mil (28 guaranteed) or the deal he got?
Players take risks by taking shorter term deals so there is a premium for that risk. Owner has to pay more upfront but has the benefit of future financial flexibility.

I don’t think it’s clear what Routt is actually going to be paid.
If it’s 20 million over three years, that’s not astronomical by today’s standards.
If incentives (such as making the pro-bowl, or a defined number of interceptions/passes defended) are met and he winds up making 10 million a year – that’s also not out of line.
Is Routt worth that type of money ? Probably not. Only time will tell.
The Routt contract indicates that Nnamdi is probably gone, but I still wouldn’t rule out Aso returning at something like 12 million a year guaranteed for 3 or 4 years. That would make Aso the highest paid DB on the Raids and in the NFL.
Depends on how badly Davis wants to retain Nnamdi, and if Nnamdi even wants to return. Haven’t heard Nnamdi say that he wants to remain a Raider, and that can’t sit well with Al.
Truth is, Nnamdi was paid far more than any other DB in the NFL last year and the classy thing to do would be to show some loyalty to the organization that compensated him so well by publicly stating that he wants to remain a Raider.
Heck, just say it even if you don’t mean it. Wouldn’t hurt your bargaining position. In fact, it’d probably make it more likely that Al would break the bank to retain his ‘loyal’ player and great Raidah.
——————————-
One other thought.
Sure hope Hue was putting out some disinformation about the Raids not even considering drafting a QB.
I mean, I can understand him saying JaJason is written in stone for 2011, but you’re not even looking at drafting a QB ?
Raids better have some contingency plans in place because I’m telling you JaJason isn’t going to make it through the 2011 season as the starter. He will either wind up being yanked for being the JaJason we saw against Tenn, St Lou, SF, and Pitt – or he’s going to tap out after a few hits to his helmet.
Sure hope the Raids resign Grads because Hue and Al’s delusional bubble about JaJason being the man is going to burst in 2011.
JaJason sucks.

mcfadden too showed he has game in the preseason, he had his man on lock-down . the hamstring messed his developement up then against miami 1st. game as a pro not good. but all in all he played great coverage just got beat on the come back routes the receivers were running .rod wood will make him a star.

Let me get this straight….We’re talking about Stanford Routt who chose to cover the TE when there was only 1 WR on the field and his side of the ball against Bowe/KC. Dude is frickin clueless on the field. He admitted he is better playing outside and can’t tackle worth a damn.
February 24th, 2011 at 10:44 pm
The Raiders on Thursday secured the services of linebacker Kamerion Wimbley and cornerback Stanford Routt at a cost of more than $30 million.
Routt, 27, received a three-year contract extension that guarantees him $20 million the first two years and potentially is worth $31.5 million. He earned slightly more than $3 million last season.
Wimbley, 27, was designated the Raiders’ nonexclusive franchise player, which is worth $10,151,000 for 2011, or the average salary of the five highest-paid linebackers in 2010. He led the Raiders with nine sacks last season, his first with the Raiders.

I still think we’re going to have 4 new starters on the O-Line.
Veldheer & Campbell have LT & RG virtually locked down
the other 3 spots are up for grabs. I wonder if Al Davis will force Wylie & Wiz to make due with less on the OL like he did Tom Cable?
I guess we’ll find out if the other 3 starters are late rounders or FA’s that nobody else wants. scrubs, cuts and cast offs. perhaps even malcontents and 1st round busts

Some stuff on Stanford Routt’s 2010 season:
Football Outsiders:
— “The Raiders re-signed cornerback Stanford Routt today to a three-year, $31.5 million extension, featuring $20 million over the first two seasons…
Now, on the surface, this looks like the usual Oakland silliness.
However, it is worth noting that Routt actually had phenomenal game charting stats in 2010.
I keep meaning to write something about his numbers, because his name jumps off a list of this year’s top corners…
Routt allowed 5.5 yards per pass with a 67 percent Success Rate.
Both figures are near the top of the league.
It was so strange that we went back and looked to make sure charters weren’t making a ton of mistakes in Oakland games. They weren’t.”
espn.com
— “According to Stats Inc., four AFC West cornerbacks — including three Oakland Raiders — were among the top six cornerbacks in the NFL in “burn” percentage rates (minimum of 20 targets).
Oakland clearly enjoyed strong cornerback play. Nnamdi Asomugha and Stanford Routt were tied for third place — giving up completions on 39.4 percent of the attempts thrown their way.
Routt’s numbers are particularly interesting.
He had 99 passes thrown at him, mostly because he was playing opposite Asomugha most of the year. Yet Routt only allowed 39 catches.
Asomugha had just 33 passes thrown at him — an average of just two a game. Asomugha gave up 13 catches.
Routt was up to the task of playing opposite a superstar cornerback.
That could earn Routt a lot of money as both he and Asomugha are free agents.
Cornerback is always a premium position in free agency.
Routt’s ability to withstand a storm in 2010 will make him attractive on the open market.”
from bleacherreport.com, using the stats.inc numbers posted by espn on the article above.
— “These numbers show how often each CB gives up a completion and touchdown…
One number that jumps out is the touchdowns given up by Routt (four) and Revis (five).
They gave up just about the same, but Routt gives up a TD just under five percent of the times he is thrown at, Revis got scored on nearly twice as often.
Opposing quarterbacks are also posting a QB rating of 78.8 when targeting Revis.
When QBs go after Routt, they are averaging a QB Rating of 69.0 and just 66.2 against Asomugha.”
February 25th, 2011 at 7:19 am
Yeah, we are supposed to buy that Routt is better than Nnamdi because of one stat from one year.
I guess Al didn’t learn his lesson from losing Woodson.
Now we get the joy of watching another HOF CB prosper in a different NFL city.
At least with Woodson there were injury and work ethic concerns…..Nnamdi had none of those issues.
Al drafts and drafts CBs and once he get some that are good, he lets them go. I just don’t understand it. Guess we all know where next year’s #1 pick is going after Routt is burned all year.
February 25th, 2011 at 7:21 am
Now if I remember correctly, most of Routt’s issues in the past happened when he was the 3rd CB behind Nnamdi and CJ and often played in the slot, not a good fit for his game.
But he proved last year he can handle the starting job outside.
Later.
February 25th, 2011 at 7:23 am
Now I read that he’s giving Henderson 8M for 2 years after receiving 1M for last year where he missed 7 games!!
++++++++++++++
Really? Hey, you know we dominated the run with him! Oh wait, no we didn’t.

You will beat your head against the wall for hours trying to make that point but people just dont get it. I dont think Routt is worth 10 mill a year, but I certainly dont believe we will be the worst team in the NFL if Routt is our starting CB. He is already facing the best receiver on the field 70% of the time, and facing the pressure of play opposite a CB that is regularly ignored. People bring up his stats prior to 2010 but he essentially played a different position. He was inside on slot receivers as the 3rd CB. Nnamdi was terrible inside too, but that is overlooked.
February 25th, 2011 at 7:28 am
Watch the CBA come back with a $100 million dollar hard cap next year. Will we be able to play with just 11 players on the entire roster?
February 25th, 2011 at 7:29 am
Really? Hey, you know we dominated the run with him! Oh wait, no we didn’t.

Yup… Big John talked a big game before Jacksonville and that game was probably the worst performance by our run defense all season. I personally would have given Henderson 1 million for the season again, or let him walk… He was of no benefit to us.
February 25th, 2011 at 7:30 am
Adam Schefter is always right about the Raiders. Rule of thumb.
February 25th, 2011 at 7:30 am
That would be lower than the cap 2 years ago… IF and I stress IF there is a cap this year it will be no less than $125, and it is certainly not very difficult to manipulate contracts to fit in the cap.
February 25th, 2011 at 7:31 am

*******
Nnamdi is STILL the best cornerback in the league. Routt is MUCH better than people here give him credit for, at least he was last year after being moved outside. I also said he is NOT worth $10 mil. How do you figure that is me sucking his ballz? Dmac proved himself this year… imo so did routt… I certainly think he proved himself to the tune of 5 million a year though, 10 is ridiculous, but I am not going to hate on Routt because Al screwed up again.
February 25th, 2011 at 7:34 am
When is Adam Schefter ever wrong about the Raiders?
February 25th, 2011 at 7:35 am
In fact, most of the media is always right about the Raiders, and the Raiders, ironically enough, are almost always wrong…about themselves! Ever notice that?
February 25th, 2011 at 7:40 am
Only thing that pisses me off more than Nnamdi being dumped for Routt is the fact that Two and a Half Men has been cancelled for the rest of the season.
Just film one more episode where Charlie gets drunk and cheats on Rose with Berta, and when Rose finds out she then commits a murder suicide taking both her life and Charlie’s. And when Charlie’s will is read Berta finds out she gets everything, and Alan ends up in a homeless shelter…and Jake takes off to begin his life in the circus.
Of course Evelyn hooks up with the lawyer who wrote Charlie’s will.
Ties up the entire show.
February 25th, 2011 at 7:44 am
bcz24,
I wasn’t pointing those comments directly at you….just the general consensus in here that dumping Nnamdi for Routt and then massively overpaying Routt is somehow okay.
I think it will turn into a huge mistake.
I am just uber frustrated. I’d rather have seen Al sit on his billfold like the rest of the owners and then hand out some rational contracts after the CBA is finalized.

Nobody cares that the Kings are moving to Anaheim. I don’t think they’re even going to talk about that on the news. And they’re not “my” Kings. Fugg them. I’ve disassociated myself with them a few years ago. I saw this all along, have been saying for years they were going to move, only for these idiots up here to stick their fingers in their ears and be in denial. I was right, as I usually am with sports owners. I don’t know what to say, I just know sports owners, know what they’re all about. I can call their next move from a mile away, and I knew for years now the Maloofs were going to move the Kings, except that I’ll admit I thought it would be Vegas. These guys came right in and threw their shirts on the table, suddenly they stop spending money. I knew it.
February 25th, 2011 at 8:51 am
The only problem I have with the Henderson signing is that I was hoping they’d be looking at a DT/NT in the draft. Now that looks pretty unlikely.
This spending spree is pretty typical of Al, but as long as he gets the major FAs back into the fold I can’t really complain. I don’t see Asomugha coming back, and that was a possibility even before he gave Routt a $30 million contract. Gallery is probably gone, too.
I just wonder what Al is going to do with Michael Huff. Huff wants to hit the open market and probably will… is Al going to make an FA signing to replace him? With all the money spent lately I don’t know how likely that is. This is a pretty weak safety class in the draft… maybe Al is planning on taking a CB and moving him to safety? Or maybe Brown, Mitchell, and Ware are going to battle it out for the starting FS job.
I don’t know, for a position that carries so much responsibility with the way the Raiders play defense, the uncertainty is definitely not comforting.
February 25th, 2011 at 8:51 am

Kamerion Wimbley is interested in working out a long-term deal with the Raiders after being designated the franchise player Thursday.
Not a bad idea to strike while Al Davis has the checkbook out. Coach Hue Jackson called Wimbley a “great young talent,” and Davis showed how much he values the pass rusher by applying the tag. Per the Oakland Tribune, the Raiders are already discussing a long-term deal with Wimbley.

Show any kind of tangible evidence that John Henderson did enough to merit of 3 million dollar raise. He played maybe… MAYBE 80 snaps this year? Our run defense did not improve at all. Sure I am all for retaining Henderson but I dont see how he (like every other signing yesterday) warranted the pay increase. Period.

Non related Raider news, but the schit is actually a little funny to me……..
Andray Blatche has apparently challenged someone to a fight via Twitter.
Ugh. Blatche got into a “Twitter fight” with someone, then eventually wrote, “I’m done with this fake internet thing if u wanna see meet me saturday after game I can throw these things homie.” This does nothing to improve Blatche’s image as an immature player, and it will be interesting to see what public reaction the Wizards have, if any.

Carlisle might be back, but only as veteran depth. Campbell is going to get a chance to take that spot. Although I hope they also give him a look at RT, just to see what the kid has. But I DO think Al will re-sign Mario Henderson and give him the first crack at RT.
It’s hard to picture Al Davis making any signings of outside free agents to shore up the offensive line. Tyson Clabo and Harvey Dahl from Atlanta would be good signings in that case, maybe a 1-year veteran minimum deal for Jared Gaither (although if Al was going to sign him, it would be to a 3-year $20 million deal I’m sure).
So really the draft is the only chance the Raiders have to replace the starters, assuming Gallery and Satele and Walker all leave.
In this case? Wisniewski said he’d like to be a Raider and would be open to playing center. Considering his size, that might be where he fits in best. Wisconsin’s John Moffitt could be a solid choice for LG in the 3rd round.
Veldheer – Moffitt – Wisniewski – Campbell – Henderson
Might not be bad, but the left side of the line is indeed inexperienced and Henderson still hasn’t shown he can handle pass rushers.
Veldheer – Loper – Wisniewski – Moffitt – Campbell
Could be a possibility. Loper played admirably in Gallery’s place.
There are plenty of questions about the offensive line and the secondary going into next season.

There is no team in the East that can beat the Lakers in 7 games.
OKC matches up well with the Lakers by adding Perkins and Nazr. Laker might not make it out of the West. I said that earlier. But they will walk through Denver and Dallas to get to the Conf finals.
February 25th, 2011 at 10:48 am
Seymour doesn’t have the pass rush to be a 3 tech, imo.
Seymour getting pushed back? Didn’t see that at all.

Beginning of the season, having a rookie MLB in the game cost us in the run D.
Than it started improving, but we got outchemed in the Indy game, and our DB’s missed tons of tackles in the Jax game.
Al Davis’ defense will never be a top 5 against the rush team. Top 10 may be pushing.
We just need to get more turnovers and make sure the QB continues to go down and go down hard.
Draft a NT?? Please, Al will draft 6 DB’s for every NT he drafts.

February 25th, 2011 at 11:01 am
307. You damb strait. That was one of the things in 2010 that was vastly diff from previous season. Our D line did NOT gwet blown off the ball 2-3 yds at the snap. They dominated the LOS the majority of the time and played on the other side of the ball more often than not.
February 25th, 2011 at 11:02 am
C and LG, LT and LG, RG and C, RG and RT.
So what??!!???
Seymour has been taking on double teams his whole career.
Our Dline is fine.
February 25th, 2011 at 11:02 am
The reason the Raiders can’t stop the run is because of their reliance on “natural 4-man pressure”. The linebackers are left in man coverage almost exclusively unless a RB or TE stays in to black.
Good defenses utilize gap-eating linemen who occupy the blockers along the offensive line, and let the linebackers come in and clean up and make tackles.
Instead, the linemen all pursue the ball carrier. Good running backs can elude slower defensive linemen, and with one cut end up in a soft middle of the field with plenty of room to run.

VR…..and people said Al would never draft a MLB in top ten….what did he do?……to win in playoffs you gotta stop the run. When we play physical teams year in and year out stopping the run is crucial. We need a brute NT THATS YOUNG to be drafted for future
February 25th, 2011 at 11:04 am
The problem is not personnel. The linemen currently on the team are as good as any group of linemen you’ll find in the NFL.
February 25th, 2011 at 11:04 am
Boston can’t run with tha Lakes without the OL dude Perkins out there. Changes everything for them.
February 25th, 2011 at 11:05 am

Run as in play with.
Boston is older than the Lakers and they just traded away their tough guy. If they thought they could win the ring they would not have made these trades.
February 25th, 2011 at 11:12 am
It’s a moot point. Seymour and Kelly are starting in the middle of our Dline with Hendu as the 3rd guy.
Our run D will be just fine.
February 25th, 2011 at 11:15 am
And personnel is surely an issue with our team…….no number 1 wr, no oline, no true fb,no starter at NT,no wlb,no FS as of now
February 25th, 2011 at 11:17 am
Perkins was hurt anyways.
Jeff Green is a good all-around player, and a top 5 perimeter defender in the league.
There was about a 95% chance anyways that when the Lakers-Celtics meet in the finals BOTH Bynum and Perkins will be hurt, so what does it matter.
February 25th, 2011 at 11:18 am
Jhill….first off they werent winning it with Perkins….guy aint even 100pct….it takes two years to come back from an acl injury……plus they just added a scorer who can finally backup pierce when he goes to bench…..i.e. james posey….u remember him? game 4 2008?

They may not be “great”, but on the whole the a few teams in the league in a better position on the defensive line.
Giants, Bears and Vikings, perhaps, but the Vikings are aging and about to lose Ray Edwards.
The Raiders may not have one overwhelmingly dominant player like Julius Peppers, but as a whole it’s a solid group. They have good young players in Houston and Shaughnessy, nice depth in Bryant and Henderson, and veteran leadership in Seymour. Last season, Kelly finally showed that he has the potential to live up to his massive contract, and did everything the Raiders asked of him.
At least for this year, it’s hard to picture any way the Raiders could get better on the defensive line.
Maybe in the next couple season the Raiders can move Houston inside and pick up a dominant DE in the first round. But for now I think it’s the one part of the team where the starters are firmly entrenched. Outside of depth, I don’t see D-line as a need for now.
February 25th, 2011 at 11:24 am
Naw our front 7 aint what they could be. Not stopping run is vital and two UTs wont do the trick…..we signed rich now dump kelly draft a fat ass NT and rotate 4 guys…..hendu sey and drafted guy plus desmond bryant
February 25th, 2011 at 11:24 am
Well it’s understandable that you W fans don’t understand grown man baskerball.
Perkins was healthy enough to turn Gasol into Gasoft. His scoring and rebounding were secondary. He was the type of player that Gasoft didn’t even want to play against.
OKC with their 3 BIGS is the only team out there I see running with the Lakers in a 7 game series. Gun to my head I’d pick OKC in 6 vs the Lakers right now.

Talk about your walking wounded. They’ll be out of the league next year on injury retirement.
Gasol is not worried about either of the ONeal brothers. That’s what you are not grasping. The MENTAL advantage Perkins had over Gasol.
February 25th, 2011 at 11:27 am
if we re-sign huff, our defense will be fine…..
February 25th, 2011 at 11:28 am
With Henderson making $4 million this year, I don’t see the Raiders drafting an NT. Especially because of their scheme, which requires the linemen to be pass rushers first. As I said above, this is the reason they have problems stopping the run. An NT here would be little more than a rotational player, like Henderson.
Best bet would be to find a freak of a player who can do both. Phil Taylor from Baylor comes to mind, but he’s almost certainly going to be gone in the top 20 picks.
I’m still hoping for Ian Williams or Kendrick Ellis, but given how highly Al evidently values Henderson, I don’t see it happening.
Kelly did everything asked of him last season. The problem is, they’re just asking him to penetrate and get to the QB, not to occupy blockers and let the linebackers come in to make the tackle.
February 25th, 2011 at 11:28 am

Wisconsin OT Gabe Carimi bench pressed 225 pounds 29 times at the Combine.
It’s a terrific number for a tackle with over 35-inch arms. NFL teams have questions about Carimi’s athleticism in evaluating him at left tackle, but he’s got plenty of strength and length to be a day-one starter on the right side.

Just read this in the paper 2day. There has been 9 players at the combine since 1999 who have timed under 4.3 seconds for the 40-yard dash. Four of them- CB’s F. Washington(4.25), S. Routt(4.28), and WR’s DHB(4.25) and J. Ford(4.28).

To everyone who keeps saying Routt gives up too many PI calls, Vito Tafur just got back to me with his research and he says Routt was only flagged 5 times last year for PI. One PI every third game aint bad at all for a bump and run corner.
Still say he isnt worth $10 million a year, but he certainly has the stats to say he is a top 5 CB in the NFL.

Will Routt play RCB or LCB or will he follow the others teams best receiver all around the field? Isn’t true that Aso saw so few balls b/c he played only one side of the field? But usually, didn’t Revis always line up against the teams best WR no matter where the WR lined up (exception I can think of was Welker and Pats/Jets playoff game)?

Thank gosh we have this Routt guy…the super secret great CB that no NFL GM, coach or player has ever publicly mentioned as a threat…to replace Nnamdi, whom every NFL GM, coach and player considers to be a top 3 CB.
And we got this Routt guy for a few million less than it would have taken to sign Nnamdi!
Yesssss! I feel better about next year already!
Now, if we could just unveil the best secret TE in the NFL….BRANDON MYERS! He deserves $7.5 million a year, and will easily replace Zack Miller.
I mean these guys are the backbone of this wonderfully successful franchise! Thankfully Al is willing to spend the money to keep this group together and keep those winning ways on track!

Four of them — cornerbacks Fabian Washington (4.25) and Stanford Routt (4.28) and wide receivers Darrius Heyward-Bey (4.25) and Jacoby Ford (4.28) — were drafted by the Raiders. No other team picked more than one sub-4.3 player during that span.

Cable: We had Raiders ‘going in right direction’ By Vic Carucci
Published: February 25th, 2011 | Tags: Tom Cable, 2011 NFL Scouting Combine, Oakland Raiders, Seattle Seahawks
INDIANAPOLIS — Tom Cable said Friday that he’s happy in his new job as assistant head coach and offensive line coach of the Seahawks.
But Cable remains proud of what he did as head coach of the Raiders, with whom he had a 17-27 record (including a 4-8 mark as interim coach in 2008) before being fired after an 8-8 finish in January. He’s also appreciative of the support he has received from several of his former Raiders players.
“We had it going in the right direction,” Cable said at the NFL Scouting Combine.
Now, working in Seattle allows the California native to be near Snohomish, Wash., where he attended high school, and he’s thrilled to be part of the high-energy atmosphere that Pete Carroll began building when he took over the Seahawks’ helm last year.

That’s because Dick Head Charlie Whacked-Out of my Brain and to far Gone Sheen is more relevant to our society and cultural idol worships generated by Hellywood (however if he was a true Raider fan I might feel sorry for the sloth, maybe), so the mid east crisis and rising oil prices can take a back seat. What really bothered me, but I’m past that now because I can’t do squat about it, was cable did have the team headed in the right direction. When was the last time you saw a Raider team have that kind of explosiveness they had, or play as a team, and Hue was a great right hand man. However, Seabass makes that fg, BG don’t stink it up against the dolphins, and JC don’t wet the bed against SF, we all be singin a different tune. Not quite sure about the meltdown against Jacksonville, and awfully awful against the stealers, BUT, the wheels were moving, so we’ll see if the off-loading pays off. Hopefully Hue has gleened some of cables errors and gets them 11-12-13 wins next season.
