Cartwright done, Henderson close

The Raiders’ flurry of activity before the end of the league year Thursday continued as they agreed to terms with special teams standout and backup running back Rock Cartwright and were nearing an agreement with defensive tackle John Henderson.

Cartwright’s signing was confirmed by a team source. He said on his Twitter page Wednesday he was returning to the Bay Area and to “re-sign with the silver and black. Henderson’s agreement was intitially reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter as a two-year, $4 million deal.

Correction to an earlier post _ the Raiders confirmed Kamerion Wimbley’s status as the franchise player, but have not confirmed the new riches bestowed upon cornerback Stanford Routt. The Raiders made note in their release about the buyback in Wimbley’s contract disallowed by the league.

However, an e-mail was sent out by Raiders public relations early in the day showing how Routt stacked up in terms of completion percentage in an ESPN blog which ran some time ago. No explanation, given, just under the heading of “FYI.”

If they choose, the Raiders could seek to fight the league ruling, but the moment Wimbley signs the tender, he is guaranteed the reported $10.1 million. And protesting the ruling would only serve to unnecessarily alienate Wimbley.

The best course of action for both parties is a longterm deal which Wimbley’s agent Joe Linta said has been in the works in recent days.

Gradkowski aint coming back at all…….guy is about to be out of the league soon. UFL material

  • r8rwill

rmr, stop and think about it, the raiders have always been known for their db’s, the best tandems in the history of the game!!!! mrdavis taught the other owners the value of shut down corners.. probably too much good info for ya…

  • M Lonetree

quite funny to see MSN’s web headline declaring “Raiders’ signings hurting NFL”.

    hahahahahahahahaha.

all of the other members of the billionaire boys club are claiming “woe is me”, that they are so broke they don’t have the money to fix the door on the outhouse or to buy a sack of rice to feed their family, but Uncle Al just says “f^ck that” and writes checks.

    hahahahahahahaha.

  • J Hill

Gardowski is better than Boeller. Not trying to see Boeller as our #2.

  • General Bauce

Lololololol excuse me yall…..im still crackin up about MR gushing over grad being better than JC. Decision making and accuracy are two most important things for a qb………grad is worse at both

  • J Hill

There is no team in the East that can beat the Lakers in 7 games.

OKC matches up well with the Lakers by adding Perkins and Nazr. Laker might not make it out of the West. I said that earlier. But they will walk through Denver and Dallas to get to the Conf finals.

  • J Hill

Seymour doesn’t have the pass rush to be a 3 tech, imo.

Seymour getting pushed back? Didn’t see that at all.

    Our Dline is fine.

  • General Bauce

Lakers walk through dallas? No way man will that happen. I have the lakers in 7 vs mavs. Thats a damn good squad that plays defense now. No one in the east? Lol you forgetting about the celtics bruh. The jeff green move counters the odom being a wildcard thing. The heat can beat you for sure…..chitown too young but would give lakers hell

  • General Bauce

Lol jhill then u werent watching the game if you didnt see that vs the run……jhill you recently just learned about 3 tech guys….Seymour isnt a NT he cant consistenly take on the LG and C vs the run and be effective

  • General Bauce

But jhill i want bos vs la again….it makes for great theatre especially with shaq in the mix now

  • Just Fire Baby

Beginning of the season, having a rookie MLB in the game cost us in the run D.

Than it started improving, but we got outchemed in the Indy game, and our DB’s missed tons of tackles in the Jax game.

Al Davis’ defense will never be a top 5 against the rush team. Top 10 may be pushing.

We just need to get more turnovers and make sure the QB continues to go down and go down hard.

Draft a NT?? Please, Al will draft 6 DB’s for every NT he drafts.

  • General Bauce

Just gimme chad johnson at WR and ill be happy…..too bad staff loves chaz

  • GoodOle00

    307. You damb strait. That was one of the things in 2010 that was vastly diff from previous season. Our D line did NOT gwet blown off the ball 2-3 yds at the snap. They dominated the LOS the majority of the time and played on the other side of the ball more often than not.

  • J Hill

C and LG, LT and LG, RG and C, RG and RT.

    So what??!!???

Seymour has been taking on double teams his whole career.

    Our Dline is fine.

  • YoungAmerican

The reason the Raiders can’t stop the run is because of their reliance on “natural 4-man pressure”. The linebackers are left in man coverage almost exclusively unless a RB or TE stays in to black.

Good defenses utilize gap-eating linemen who occupy the blockers along the offensive line, and let the linebackers come in and clean up and make tackles.

Instead, the linemen all pursue the ball carrier. Good running backs can elude slower defensive linemen, and with one cut end up in a soft middle of the field with plenty of room to run.

    I 2nd that J!

  • General Bauce

VR…..and people said Al would never draft a MLB in top ten….what did he do?……to win in playoffs you gotta stop the run. When we play physical teams year in and year out stopping the run is crucial. We need a brute NT THATS YOUNG to be drafted for future

  • YoungAmerican

The problem is not personnel. The linemen currently on the team are as good as any group of linemen you’ll find in the NFL.

  • J Hill

Boston can’t run with tha Lakes without the OL dude Perkins out there. Changes everything for them.

  • General Bauce

Jhill do you understand scheme? Seymour was playing 5 tech in a 3-4 defense much different in a 4-3 and no he wasnt taking double teams all day in NE

  • General Bauce

Boston cant run? The fawkin Lakers cant run. To ever say a team with a floor general like rondo cant run is absurd

  • General Bauce

Goodole…..dline didnt get blown off vs mediocre olines but good ones they got punked

  • General Bauce

YoungAmerican…..our dline is good but not great….lets not overdue it my good pal

  • J Hill

    Run as in play with.

Boston is older than the Lakers and they just traded away their tough guy. If they thought they could win the ring they would not have made these trades.

  • J Hill

It’s a moot point. Seymour and Kelly are starting in the middle of our Dline with Hendu as the 3rd guy.

Our run D will be just fine.

  • General Bauce

And personnel is surely an issue with our team…….no number 1 wr, no oline, no true fb,no starter at NT,no wlb,no FS as of now

  • Just Fire Baby

    Perkins was hurt anyways.

Jeff Green is a good all-around player, and a top 5 perimeter defender in the league.

There was about a 95% chance anyways that when the Lakers-Celtics meet in the finals BOTH Bynum and Perkins will be hurt, so what does it matter.

  • General Bauce

Jhill….first off they werent winning it with Perkins….guy aint even 100pct….it takes two years to come back from an acl injury……plus they just added a scorer who can finally backup pierce when he goes to bench…..i.e. james posey….u remember him? game 4 2008?

  • J Hill

We had 3 players starting at 4-3 LB positions in the NFL for the first time in the careers. Our MLB was a rookie.

Safe to say that all 3 of those guys will be better this year.

Our front 7 is just fine!

  • General Bauce

Jhill….boston still tougher than LA up front….shaq, jermaine, davis, kristic, kg and green all gonna see time in post…..plus word is troy murphy gonna be signed when w’s buy him out.

    —————-

They may not be “great”, but on the whole the a few teams in the league in a better position on the defensive line.

Giants, Bears and Vikings, perhaps, but the Vikings are aging and about to lose Ray Edwards.

The Raiders may not have one overwhelmingly dominant player like Julius Peppers, but as a whole it’s a solid group. They have good young players in Houston and Shaughnessy, nice depth in Bryant and Henderson, and veteran leadership in Seymour. Last season, Kelly finally showed that he has the potential to live up to his massive contract, and did everything the Raiders asked of him.

At least for this year, it’s hard to picture any way the Raiders could get better on the defensive line.

Maybe in the next couple season the Raiders can move Houston inside and pick up a dominant DE in the first round. But for now I think it’s the one part of the team where the starters are firmly entrenched. Outside of depth, I don’t see D-line as a need for now.

  • General Bauce

Naw our front 7 aint what they could be. Not stopping run is vital and two UTs wont do the trick…..we signed rich now dump kelly draft a fat ass NT and rotate 4 guys…..hendu sey and drafted guy plus desmond bryant

  • J Hill

Well it’s understandable that you W fans don’t understand grown man baskerball.

Perkins was healthy enough to turn Gasol into Gasoft. His scoring and rebounding were secondary. He was the type of player that Gasoft didn’t even want to play against.

OKC with their 3 BIGS is the only team out there I see running with the Lakers in a 7 game series. Gun to my head I’d pick OKC in 6 vs the Lakers right now.

  • General Bauce

VR…..its almost march madness! ima need ur vegas odds knowledge to assist me!……hopefully mizzo ugets a favorable bracket

  • J Hill

    Shaq and Jermaine ONeal ????

Talk about your walking wounded. They’ll be out of the league next year on injury retirement.

Gasol is not worried about either of the ONeal brothers. That’s what you are not grasping. The MENTAL advantage Perkins had over Gasol.

  • r8rwill

if we re-sign huff, our defense will be fine…..

  • YoungAmerican

With Henderson making $4 million this year, I don’t see the Raiders drafting an NT. Especially because of their scheme, which requires the linemen to be pass rushers first. As I said above, this is the reason they have problems stopping the run. An NT here would be little more than a rotational player, like Henderson.

Best bet would be to find a freak of a player who can do both. Phil Taylor from Baylor comes to mind, but he’s almost certainly going to be gone in the top 20 picks.

I’m still hoping for Ian Williams or Kendrick Ellis, but given how highly Al evidently values Henderson, I don’t see it happening.

Kelly did everything asked of him last season. The problem is, they’re just asking him to penetrate and get to the QB, not to occupy blockers and let the linebackers come in to make the tackle.

  • General Bauce

Excuse me? Jhill as it is widely known the basketball acumen in NorCal trumps you people in SoCal by far. Talk basketball with our fans at the game vs yours and we destroy….u even know this bawdy…..and perkins with one good leg cant guard gasol lol….so much for u understanding basketball

Wisconsin OT Gabe Carimi bench pressed 225 pounds 29 times at the Combine.
It’s a terrific number for a tackle with over 35-inch arms. NFL teams have questions about Carimi’s athleticism in evaluating him at left tackle, but he’s got plenty of strength and length to be a day-one starter on the right side.
