Jackson quick hits
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, February 24th, 2011 at 10:53 am in Oakland Raiders.
Some highlights as Raiders coach Hue Jackson made the rounds with the media at the NFL scouting combine:
– Jackson could not confirm a two-year contract extension as reported by the NFL Network for cornerback Stanford Routt, but said it was his understanding a deal was close. He expressed confidence that Routt could handle the role as the No. 1 cornerback in the event Nnamdi Asomugha does not return.
The reported numbers on Routt are even more stunning than his first- and third-round tender last year _ $20 million guaranteed, $31.5 million total.
Jackson would not rule out Asomugha returning, but conceded it was possible he wouldn’t.
– No word yet on the designation of a franchise player, which could go to Zach Miller if the Raiders haven’t reached a deal before today’s deadline (I believe it’s 4 p.m. Eastern. Jackson said the Raiders would “probably” have a franchise player.
UPDATE: The Raiders have reportedly franchised (according to Adam Caplan of FoxSports.com) outside linebacker Kamerion Wimbley, whose $3.5 million buyback exeeded a 30 percent in terms of a pay raise _ too high for an existing contract. So instead of salary plus the buyback which would have paid Wimbley around $4.1 million, he’s due the franchise number of approximately $10.1 million.
Oakland is attempting to reach a longterm deal with Wimbley and franchising him is a way to stop him from hitting the open market in the event of a collective bargaining agreement.– The Raiders have a defensive coordinator.
“Me,” Jackson said.
He said the Raiders were still evaluating people outside the organization and the hire could also come within. Chuck Bresnahan is still listed as a “defensive coach” with no specific designation.
Whoever the coordinator is, Jackson said the Raiders would remain primarily a 4-3 team but be multiple in scope, meaning whoever the coordiantor is will come into a situation where scheme and philosophy is pretty much in place.
Jackson said he wasn’t sure if there would be a hire to coach quarterbacks, given the amount of time he and offensive coordinator Al Saunders will spend with the position. He said too many voices can sometime dilute a message.
More to come later . . .

I have never once seen or read anywhere that Routt is considered by NFL people a top tier CB….yet now he is making top tier CB money.
This smells of the 2008 offseason.

I’d still like to see Asomugha back in the Silver and Black. He is a class act and it would be a classy move for him to stay.

Raiders just signed Stan Routt to a contract extension and they are also very close to inking Zach Miller to an extension as well…
February 24th, 2011 at 10:59 am
Hopefully Lafatcatfora is wrong about these contract numbers.
No way anyone would come close to giving Routt $10 million a year. No way. Not even crazy Al.

I feel like banging my head against a wall. Would rather have Nnamdi back at $15 million than Routt back at $10 million.

Still holding out hope for Ian Williams in the 4th round or Kendrick Ellis in the 5th…
I don’t see any true NT cracking the starting lineup, though. Al likes his defensive linemen being pass rushers first and foremost.

Raiders applied the franchise tag to SLB Kamerion Wimbley, according to Fox Sports’ Adam Caplan.
Wimbley and his agent claimed the Raiders’ $3.5 million “buy-back” was against the 30 percent rule, and the NFL management council and NFLPA responded in their favor. The Raiders didn’t want to let their leading sack artist hit the open market, so they’ve opted to shell out roughly $10 million. Wimbley graded out as Pro Football Focus’ top 4-3 outside linebacker, so the Raiders were smart to do what it takes to hang on to him.

No one was going to give us a 3rd rounder for Routt to begin with last year. Routt is nothing more than an Al Davis pet project. It was stupid to tag him for a first and 3rd money and now this is beyond rediculous.

Sorry but Routt has ZERO football instincts. He gets by on pure dumbluck or toasted over the middle time and again.

The Raiders opted not to apply the franchise tag to TE Zach Miller.
The sides are still talking contract. The Raiders have agreed to above-market deals with Stanford Routt and Richard Seymour in the past week, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if they satisfied Miller as well. With just four years under his belt, there’s a chance that Miller’s free agency would be restricted under the next CBA.

Coach Hue Jackson reiterated his supreme confidence in Jason Campbell as his starting quarterback Thursday.
“There’s not a position, other than QB, that I wouldn’t just look at in the draft and say we don’t need anybody,” explained Jackson. Campbell will face no competition for the starting job this summer. The backup situation remains up in the air with Bruce Gradskowski due to hit free agency.

February 24th, 2011 at 11:58 am
Next year’s QB class will be much better than this year’s. No point in blowing a pick on a guy just because he’s there. Outside of Kaepernick, the projected mid-late round guys have failed to really establish themselves in a fairly weak class. Devlin, Enderle and Ponder still could have decent combines/pro days, but at this point they should be priorities for the Raiders.

I dont know about paying 10mill for a LB who is a liability in pass coverage. what are your thoughts NATION???
February 24th, 2011 at 12:04 pm

Curious to what your take is on Hue Jackson saying his number one attribute that he looks for in his QB is their “ability to lead men.”
Since you think I am into that rah-rah stuff to much, it seems Hue would fall under your same rules.

Routt = P.Buchanon 2.0
February 24th, 2011 at 12:07 pm
It’s a shame that the buyback option didn’t work out. Would have gotten the Raiders a quality player on the cheap.
He might be a liability in coverage, but the vast majority of linebackers are. Linebackers generally don’t get paid/drafted to cover. Wimbley’s pros far outweigh his cons, in my opinion.
February 24th, 2011 at 12:08 pm
Didnt Routt have the lowest completion% against in the NFL???
February 24th, 2011 at 12:09 pm
Nnamdi is almost certainly gone. I don’t think Al would have paid Routt $10 million if he still intended on paying Nnamdi. I could be wrong, though.
Huff seems intent on hitting the open market. Routt may very well be the only starting Raiders DB back next season.

Asomugha is gone, you dont give 30 millions to your CB2 if you really want to resign your CB1.
I like Routt, I think he is highly underrated, good to keep him along with Chris Johnson, that gives us one problem less to worry, still I would like to see us sign or draft a CB.

Al sure seems to be making more moves than just about any other owner right now. I wonder how they all feel, now that Al is throwing a lot of money at his own players 2 weeks before the lockout.
Hiring coaches, extending it’s own FA to longer deals. It could work out in spades for Al with this whole CBA deal, and he is seizing the opportunity of catching his opponents napping.
Long live Al

Maybe Curtis Brown will still be there in the 3rd round.
Davon House in the 4th or 5th round might not be a bad deal.
Without Nnamdi, and with Woodson as the CBs coach, the Raiders need to bring along some youth at the position. Hopefully Walter McFadden and Jeremy Ware will make some measurable progress in their second seasons as well.

That’s what Huff was good at. He had the burn job in the Jax game, but he has been solid in coverage for years, and he has been increasing his turnover production each year.

The Oakland Raiders have agreed to terms on a three-year contract extension with cornerback Stanford Routt, a source with knowledge of the situation said Thursday.
Routt will earn a maximum of $31.5 million over his, including $20 million over the first two years, according to league sources.
The deal places him in the upper echelon of cornerbacks (Champ Bailey’s new contract averages roughly $11 million per season, for instance). Securing Routt at this rate could further lessen Oakland’s ability to give Asomugha the type of top-of-the-market deal he will command.
Routt had 55 tackles and made two interceptions, returning one for a touchdown in 2010.
^^^^^^^^
Wow….IF this is true. This is considered the 2nd STUPID move of the offseason so far.
Signing an underachiever like Routt for this much money……is a slap in the face of Nnamdi IMO.
The first stuid move was getting rid of Marshall as D-Coord, and winding up downgrading to Chuck B??

Agreed.
Page has at least average cover skills, although he may not be as versatile as Huff was.
I’d like to see Huff back, but if he tests the FA market I think he’ll have his pick of teams… most notably the Cowboys or Texans.
Don’t see a lot of guys who could be big-time single-deep safeties in this draft. Sands is interesting because of his size and ability to tackle and cover, but can he be the last line of defense? Gilchrest has decent measurables, but it’s the same issue with him.
I think, at least for this season, the Raiders might be better off bringing in a vet playmaker like Page to compete with Stevie Brown, who showed the potential to be a special player. If neither of them are the answer, the Raiders could look at FS in the 2012 draft.

NO $DINERO$ LEFT???
February 24th, 2011 at 12:42 pm
Atogwe would be a good option, but he’ll command at least as much money as Huff will.
Page can probably be signed on the cheap, and he’s younger than Atogwe.

Who knows with this whole CBA deal what might happen.
It’s somewhat conceivable that they will eliminate some of this revenue-sharing and salary cap, and some of the smaller and less profitable markets (us included) will be at at a huge disadvantage to these larger market teams. It could ultimately end up like how it is in baseball, with teams spending 70-80 million more a year in salaries than other teams.
Al is old as hell and rolling the dice, and I am betting on the don’t pass and the Easy Eight along with him.
Stanford Routt = 2011 Pro Bowl alternate
February 24th, 2011 at 12:44 pm
Maybe the Raiders can take a chance on a less expensive FA CB like Eric Wright.
Other options might be:
CB Jonathan Joseph, Antonio Cromartie, or Richard Marshall
OT Jammal Brown or Jared Gaither
WR Santana Moss
TE Matt Spaeth
FS Jarrad Page (if Huff walks)
Don’t know how much money will be left for any of those guys by the time a CBA is reached, though.

Raiders just signed Stan Routt to a contract extension and they are also very close to inking Zach Miller to an extension as well…
^^^^^^^
Zach Miller extension good….Routt extension….bad.
Having to franchise Wimbley for 10 million instead of the 3.5 million is a loss.

Could happen. If Nnamdi leaves Routt will only see 35-50 balls his way instead of 100.

Maybe Hue will be the Raiders only rep for the meeting, after all he is the OC and DC, along with HC.. Might as well add GM, to his list of duties…

Kamerion Wimbley had a good year but $10mill for an LB???? He wasnt THAT good. The guy isnt Patrick Willis. They better work out a deal for Zack Miller.

Mediocre play = monster contracts from Oakland. Wimbley can’t cover anyone…..and other than some asinine statistic that keeps getting thrown around in here, I have never heard any NFL player, GM or coach ever even bring up Routt’s name.
Unreal.

It really is a shame that the buyback option for Wimbley didn’t work out. Would have saved the Raiders a whole lot of money. $7 million could have easily locked up Huff or Joseph or Cromartie for a year, if the Raiders were so inclined.
Oh well. Keeping Wimbley means one less hole on the defense to fill, and he’s a decent young player. Might not be able to cover, but few LBs can, and at least he’s versatile enough to play with his hand on the ground, too.
Like I said earlier, it’ll be interesting to see what this means for Huff, Gallery and the rest of the free agents along the offensive line.
Miller’s deal is going to get done regardless so I’m not really worried about that. And Bush will likely be an RFA.

February 24th, 2011 at 1:45 pm
$45 million this year for three defensive players. Still need a CB and FS. Still have three starting spots to fill on the offensive line. Still have to re-sign Miller and potentially Bush and Reece (although all of them will likely be RFAs).
Should get interesting from here on out. Although at least the Raiders are getting it sorted out pre-draft.

Matt Hayes of The Sporting News reports Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck, who turned down NFL millions to stay in school, will have a multi-million dollar insurance policy – a total package that will likely dwarf what other college stars have had in recent years. The amount of the policy will be determined by the NFL’s new Collective Bargaining Agreement – a contentious issue in current labor talks that could disrupt the 2011 NFL season.
Luck has secured a $5 million policy offered through the NCAA to cover any potential debilitating injury, and will add more once – or if – a new CBA is approved. “The guaranteed money for top five or top 10 picks will be lower with the new CBA,” said Luck’s father and West Virginia athletic director, Oliver Luck. “The question is, how much lower?” Rams quarterback Sam Bradford, the No.1 pick in last year’s NFL draft, signed a six-year, $78 million contract – with $50 million guaranteed. Rookie contracts are a key bargaining chip in the current negotiations, and likely will be capped at a significantly reduced number than previous seasons. Oliver Luck said the family won’t pursue a policy for the full amount any new CBA limits for rookies, but the total insurance package will be significant.
Luck threw for 3,338 yards and 32 touchdowns as last year’s Heisman Trophy runner-up, and led the Cardinal to an Orange Bowl victory over Virginia Tech. Had he decided to leave school early, he would have been projected as the No.1 overall pick in the April draft

Aso- 17 million this year….
Seymour- 15 million this year (5 over value?)
Wimbley- 10 million this year (6 over value?)
Routt – 10 million this year (6 over value?)
Is this what Davis meant by spreading 17 million around to keep players? Think I’m undervaluing these players? It’s possible… but it doesn’t mean I’m wrong… we still don’t know Miller’s contract yet…
Discuss.
February 24th, 2011 at 1:48 pm
10 million for Routt is a joke! I bet if Big Al lined up opposite Routt today, Big Al could give him one move and Routt would bite, and Big Al would take it to the house! Please tell me this is not happening!
February 24th, 2011 at 1:49 pm
Must have been the “Sour Diesel”… I posted the wrong article….
According to Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post, loud-and-large New York Jets coach Rex Ryan hasn’t lost his swagger or his confidence in his football team, guaranteeing that the AFC East franchise will win the Super Bowl next season. “I guarantee we’ll win it this year,” Ryan said today at the NFL scouting combine. “I believe we’ll be the team that wins it, period. I feel it.”
When asked why he felt that way, Ryan stated, “I believe we have an excellent team. “I thought we’d win it the first two years. I guarantee we’ll do it this year. We have an incredible scouting department and a GM that knows the blueprint for success. We have no excuses. Whatever it takes, we’re going to find a way to get it done. “I’m going to try to will a championship. Anything it takes. We’re going to lock arms and find a way to get it done. Our mission is to host a home playoff game. I’m not afraid to stand up here and say it.”
February 24th, 2011 at 1:49 pm
Who knows, maybe whatever team ends up with the #1 overall pick will already have a relatively settled QB situation, and Al can make a trade for Luck.
