Jackson quick hits

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, February 24th, 2011 at 10:53 am in Oakland Raiders.

Some highlights as Raiders coach Hue Jackson made the rounds with the media at the NFL scouting combine:

– Jackson could not confirm a two-year contract extension as reported by the NFL Network for cornerback Stanford Routt, but said it was his understanding a deal was close. He expressed confidence that Routt could handle the role as the No. 1 cornerback in the event Nnamdi Asomugha does not return.

The reported numbers on Routt are even more stunning than his first- and third-round tender last year _ $20 million guaranteed, $31.5 million total.

Jackson would not rule out Asomugha returning, but conceded it was possible he wouldn’t.

– No word yet on the designation of a franchise player, which could go to Zach Miller if the Raiders haven’t reached a deal before today’s deadline (I believe it’s 4 p.m. Eastern. Jackson said the Raiders would “probably” have a franchise player.

UPDATE: The Raiders have reportedly franchised (according to Adam Caplan of FoxSports.com) outside linebacker Kamerion Wimbley, whose $3.5 million buyback exeeded a 30 percent in terms of a pay raise _ too high for an existing contract. So instead of salary plus the buyback which would have paid Wimbley around $4.1 million, he’s due the franchise number of approximately $10.1 million.

Oakland is attempting to reach a longterm deal with Wimbley and franchising him is a way to stop him from hitting the open market in the event of a collective bargaining agreement.– The Raiders have a defensive coordinator.

“Me,” Jackson said.

He said the Raiders were still evaluating people outside the organization and the hire could also come within. Chuck Bresnahan is still listed as a “defensive coach” with no specific designation.

Whoever the coordinator is, Jackson said the Raiders would remain primarily a 4-3 team but be multiple in scope, meaning whoever the coordiantor is will come into a situation where scheme and philosophy is pretty much in place.

Jackson said he wasn’t sure if there would be a hire to coach quarterbacks, given the amount of time he and offensive coordinator Al Saunders will spend with the position. He said too many voices can sometime dilute a message.

More to come later . . .

I have never once seen or read anywhere that Routt is considered by NFL people a top tier CB….yet now he is making top tier CB money.

This smells of the 2008 offseason.

I’d still like to see Asomugha back in the Silver and Black. He is a class act and it would be a classy move for him to stay.

There’s no way in Hell Nnamdi stay’s now.

Raiders just signed Stan Routt to a contract extension and they are also very close to inking Zach Miller to an extension as well…

  • Dakota

Hopefully Lafatcatfora is wrong about these contract numbers.

No way anyone would come close to giving Routt $10 million a year. No way. Not even crazy Al.

So who takes a job like that?

Not any creative Coach, that’s for sure. Another puppet.

  • http://www.pro-football-reference.com/ KoolKell

    So who’s the Dakota impersonator?

  • Nnamdi21

Davis very good about keeping who he wants. If Nnamdi wants to stay he will.

  • Nnamdi21

    6. Thanks for that timely update

  • Nnamdi21

Have to say Jerry is the man. Davis should make him highest paid. lol!

  • YoungAmerican

I feel like banging my head against a wall. Would rather have Nnamdi back at $15 million than Routt back at $10 million.

  • http://sportmag.us/images/Lester_Hayes_November_1981.jpg RaiderDogg

I have heard from more than one person that Big Al is prepared to make Nnamdi the highest paid CB in the NFL, but not the highest paid Defensive player…

Sorry, that’s what happens when I don’t take the time to read the blog before I post. Just passing on info that was given to me…

  • Macho Man Randy Savage

You know what, LaCanfora must have confused Routts #s with Zack’s. I know Zack Miller at 10mill per is expensive, but it makes more sense than Routt. No?

  • Nnamdi21

Feelin ya Dogg. Go Raiders baby!

Kell alot of people take jobs like that everyday…..DC means nada to me if we dont get a true NT

    ————–

Still holding out hope for Ian Williams in the 4th round or Kendrick Ellis in the 5th…

I don’t see any true NT cracking the starting lineup, though. Al likes his defensive linemen being pass rushers first and foremost.

  • Dakota

I wonder what Brandon Myers is worth if he will be taking over for Miller…..$12 million a year?

  • Macho Man Randy Savage

Al has no idea on how to stop the run.

  • General Bauce

Al Davis is dope! He does whatever the fk he wants to do lol….i dont agree with all he does but I’ll ride this thing until we get back

  • http://www.flynnlives.com/ Kevin Flynn

    Routt is overpaid again.

  • General Bauce

Well YoungAmerican….ideal thing to do is get a top tier NT in the draft….Big Ian would be cool but Al gonna get a diamond in the rough if he selects one

If those figures are correct, you Al Davis Worshippers deserved this one. Effin me. He blasted Nnamdi to overpay this guy??????

  • DMAC

Raiders applied the franchise tag to SLB Kamerion Wimbley, according to Fox Sports’ Adam Caplan.
Wimbley and his agent claimed the Raiders’ $3.5 million “buy-back” was against the 30 percent rule, and the NFL management council and NFLPA responded in their favor. The Raiders didn’t want to let their leading sack artist hit the open market, so they’ve opted to shell out roughly $10 million. Wimbley graded out as Pro Football Focus’ top 4-3 outside linebacker, so the Raiders were smart to do what it takes to hang on to him.

Wouldn’t mind seeing Al trade up for Phil Taylor, but I just don’t think he has the ammunition to make that happen.

Unless this deal with Routt was part of a sign-and-trade situation with the Redskins.

    In my dreams…

Kim Newton said he wanted to be an entertainment icon.

OH MY GAWD. HE SHOULD BE HORSEWHIPPED!!!!!!!

    *******************************

Nobody said “horsewhipped” but I think ridicule is an acceptable response.

Entertainment icon?? Are the greatest QB’s in the history of the game even entertainment icons?

What does he think this is, American Idol?

BTW, about 30 minutes ago, Herm Edwards was on the SVP show, and he more or less told Cam Newton to shut up and think before he speaks.

  • aig-raiders

No one was going to give us a 3rd rounder for Routt to begin with last year. Routt is nothing more than an Al Davis pet project. It was stupid to tag him for a first and 3rd money and now this is beyond rediculous.

  • DMAC

    Make it rain Al!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Make it rain!!!!
    LMAO

  • General Bauce

LOL wouldnt be crazy if Al is right on this move with Routt and he balls out this year? Nah not expecting that but he will play well

  • aig-raiders

Sorry but Routt has ZERO football instincts. He gets by on pure dumbluck or toasted over the middle time and again.

  • YoungAmerican

Franchising Wimbley makes more sense than giving Routt $10 million per year.

  • Just Fire Baby

I just went to Pro Football Focus, and I didn’t see that they have ranked the 2010 season at any other position besides Defensive Ends and 3-4 OLB.

I want to see other rankings!!!!

Let’s take some guesses where some of our blogs favorite punching bags land.

  • General Bauce

Aig….who knows Al may sign nnamdi to a big deal…..eventho i want aso out

I have been told that Al Davis and the Raiders have an interest in DT Shaun Rogers and he is scheduled for a workout sometime next week…

Only thing left is for me to hit this market and see what happens

  • DMAC

The Raiders opted not to apply the franchise tag to TE Zach Miller.
The sides are still talking contract. The Raiders have agreed to above-market deals with Stanford Routt and Richard Seymour in the past week, so it wouldn’t be a surprise if they satisfied Miller as well. With just four years under his belt, there’s a chance that Miller’s free agency would be restricted under the next CBA.

Coach Hue Jackson reiterated his supreme confidence in Jason Campbell as his starting quarterback Thursday.
“There’s not a position, other than QB, that I wouldn’t just look at in the draft and say we don’t need anybody,” explained Jackson. Campbell will face no competition for the starting job this summer. The backup situation remains up in the air with Bruce Gradskowski due to hit free agency.

    ********
I just got a fat sack of Sour Diesel (worst weed name ever, but its some bomb green. Well orange really) and I am going to need it after this crap.

3 players on our defense now account for $35 million next year!

  • YoungAmerican

Next year’s QB class will be much better than this year’s. No point in blowing a pick on a guy just because he’s there. Outside of Kaepernick, the projected mid-late round guys have failed to really establish themselves in a fairly weak class. Devlin, Enderle and Ponder still could have decent combines/pro days, but at this point they should be priorities for the Raiders.

  • DMAC

    Bcz24,
You want to get fked up. Try some of that blue berry schit.

  • YoungAmerican

Sour Diesel is quality stuff, but for me it tweaks me out too much. Makes me paranoid and a little too spacey.

Personally, I love me some Blueberry.

  • socalraider2408

Im beating Jerry to the punch here! Wimbley franchise tagged. WTF! 10mill next season. Routt re-signed 3yrs for 30mill. damn it!!! there goes #21′s money

  • socalraider2408

I dont know about paying 10mill for a LB who is a liability in pass coverage. what are your thoughts NATION???

  • YoungAmerican

Wimbley for $10 million makes a lot more sense than Routt for $10 million, that’s for damn sure.

Who knows, the franchise tags might all be reversed by the time the CBA is reached.
