Young Wiz would love chance to say `uncle’

Stefen Wisniewski would like nothing better than follow in his uncle’s footsteps while at the same time being under his watch.

The nephew of Raiders assistant offensive line coach Steve Wisniewski followed in the footsteps of his father and uncle at Penn State wasn’t shy about considering the one in 32 chance he could wind up being drafted by Oakland with the No. 48 pick in the draft.

Details in my Saturday story from the NFL scouting combine in Bay Area News Group papers . . .

    2) OG/C Stefan Wisniewski (Penn State), CB Curtis Brown (Texas), or OLB Mason Foster (Washington)

    3) OLB Casey Matthews (Oregon), C Jake Kirkpatrick (TCU), OLB Greg Jones (Michigan State), or OG/C John Moffitt (Wisconsin)

    4) CB Davon House (New Mexico State), CB/FS Marcus Gilchrist (Clemson), or FS Robert Sands (West Virginia)

    5) C/OG Brandon Fusco (Slippery Rock), FB Henry Hynoski (Pitt), or WR Ricardo Lockette (Fort Valley State)

    6) DE/DT Cedrick Thornton (Southern Arkansas)

    —————

Attempt to re-sign: Miller (RFA), Bush (RFA), Gallery, Reece (RFA), Mario Henderson, Satele, Bryant (RFA), Barnes, Loper, and Condo.

Huff will test the FA market, but seems open to coming back for the right offer.

    Possible FA targets:

CB Richard Marshall or Eric Wright
OT Jammal Brown or Jared Gaither
    WR Santana Moss
    TE Matt Spaeth
FS Jarrad Page (if Huff walks)

  • GoodOle00

Frankly it will be interesting to see how our O line shapes up with Cable and the ZBS a thing of the past.

Davis may feel set if Henderson can be worked in at RT.

Would be surprised if B. Cambpell starts RG week 1.

Would be more surprised to see Hendu at RT…if he makes the final cut down.

  • GoodOle00

    3. Theres a reason Page can’t stay put.

Gaither has motivational issues. Last thing Oakland needs, plus, he’s a Left Tackle and barring the unforseen Jared Veldheer’s going to own that spot for the next 10 years.

May get Ocho but not Moss. More likely to stand pat. Maybe ditch JLH

  • YoungAmerican

I see Al drafting the fastest WR at the Combine in the 4th or 5th rounds as a bigger possibility than either Ocho or Moss.

Page is an underrated player, and if Huff walks would be an inexpensive veteran option to compete with Stevie Brown for the FS spot.

Gaither can play LT or RT. If he’s healthy and Hue thinks he can work with him, he would command no more than a 1-year “prove it” contract and would be decent insurance in case Mario, Barnes, or potentially Bruce Campbell are complete disasters at RT. At his best, Gaither is a dominant protector on the edge.

  • YoungAmerican

Really have no idea what to expect with the RT spot. Walker, Henderson and Barnes are all FAs, and the draft is not very deep with OTs at all. There’s a good chance all the RTs who could come in and immediately compete for a starting job will be long gone before the Raiders pick.

  • Midwest Fan

Something about the idea of Carimi with B Campbell next to him…. Think we would immediately dominate in the running game.

  • http://www.aldavissucks.blogspot.com The Real MaddenRaider

So Al’s basically going to leave Bresnehan lying in wait while he begs Winston Moss to take a job that he clearly doesn’t want? Great for team chemistry. The Raiders will ALWAYS suck until Al is gone.

  • YoungAmerican

If Carimi is there it would be a pretty outstanding pick, for sure.

  • Midwest Fan

I was thinking more in the lines of trading #49, Groves, & a future pick to get near the top of the 2nd & grab Carimi if he’s around.

Than work on getting Matthews with the next pick

  • YoungAmerican

Anything’s possible, I suppose. Wouldn’t be surprised if Al trades up, or trades back for extra picks.

  • Midwest Fan

Wouldn’t mind staying put and getting Wiz and than Matthews.

Pair that with signing Nnamdi to a 1 yr deal at the top salary… (more than Revis but not more than the top QB)

Figure out how to sign our key FA’s obviously, and add 2-3 other solid picks in the draft.

Schefter has a fat mole in the Raiders’ organization. He always breaks Raiders news first. Somebody who’s been with the organization since ’06.

post9-er for mr, you sir suck on lemons all day long, Al will carry on until he hits 100, just to spite you and Kell, RAIDERS!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • http://www.aldavissucks.blogspot.com The Real MaddenRaider

You really want the Raiders to suck for 19 more years?

  • http://www.aldavissucks.blogspot.com The Real MaddenRaider

The Raiders still haven’t had a winning season since Gruden reminded everyone who the real brain behind that winning season was. Yeah, improvement this year…only for the head coach to be fired afterward. Back to square one. Rebuild. And, Al’s doing the building. Lots of reason NOT to be excited.

That’s what I want to see with the Raiders first two picks this year.

Round 2- Wisnewski to play Center.
Round 3- Matthews to compete for the WLB/OLB spot

With those two picks…at least I know the Raiders are getting bloodline FOOTBALL players who will work hard and have high motors and high football IQ’s.

Gaithers sat a season with a back injury but its his foot injury and its severity (or not) after being booted out of his original Left Tackle spot by Michael Oher.

Gaither hated the move and sudden hurt his foot after the move demotion.

An injury Raven doctors thought wasn’t as severe as Gaither let on.

He’s trouble and just because he MAY be able to play RT doesn’t mean he will or would.

He’s trouble we don’t need period.

  • GoodOle00

RMR your desperation is off putting

  • priesttj

Offseason so far so good inpite of what some say. I think the money for Routt was too much but they needed to re-sign him to make sure we had a good vet at that spot.

I’m not as sure about the Henderson signing but no big risk there. Just very happy to see that the Raiders have some direction instead of following the herd.

  • aig-raiders

I’ll forgive Al’s rediculous contract to Routt if he gets Wiz 2.0 and Matthews 2.5 or whatever. We could use those 2 kids.

  • YoungAmerican

Finally got around to watching the Senior Bowl, and Curtis Brown looked really solid. Aggressive corner who isn’t afraid to put his shoulder down and lay somebody out. If Wisniewski is gone he would be a solid selection with the 2nd round pick.

  • Just Fire Baby

I’m all for drafting Clay Matthews, but to take him in the 3rd round is too early, IMO. He is undersized and slow, and if his name weren’t Matthews, nobody on here would even look twice at him.

The guy is slated as a 4th-6th rounder, Kiper has him as the #8 OLB in the draft. ESPN, NFLN, CBSSports, and Walter Football (arguably the 4 best rating sites) and none of them have him as a 3rd rounder.

When he runs a 4.9 forty later this week, maybe we can stop this 3rd round talk.

  • Just Fire Baby

    Meant *Casey Matthews……….

  • Harder2000

The biggest problem with Matthews is that he is slow, which make him a longshot to make Silver and Black.. Also, he has been knocked for his poor ability to blitz.. If Dontay Moch runs a 4.2 40 yard dash as he has been raving about, and have done several times before, theres a much greater chance on seeing him called in the third – even though he is clearly a project..
We could definately use an LB, but the O-line could very fast become a bigger issue – Carlisle had a pretty decent year for his standard but is strictly a ZBS guy, would struggle with an almost pure powerscheme.. Satele who had a good year is a ZBS guy and could meet problems in an expanded powerscheme.. Gallery would most likely fit well in the powerscheme, but no reports that he is negotiating a contract could mean he is moving on – following Cable maybe.. Walker fits the powerscheme but is horrible against speed rushers, and could definately be replaced.. So, besides Veldheer the line is a questionmark right now.. They will adress this, but who they will retain and who they might bring in, if a CBA is agreed upon before, will influence the draft.. If Mario can become the RT he once was they might go for him, and if Big Bruce can contribute this year it would be great, but only the coaches have a feeling about this, and that Bruce wasnt even active in the games after the Playoff dreams wsa squashed isnt a good sign for him to become a strong starter out the gate.. Personally i like Big Bruce and hope he makes it! But regardless, we might see some changes in this area, also through draft (one or two picks presumeably)..

  • Just Fire Baby

    I highly doubt Moch runs a 4.40 forty better yet a 4.2

I remember the Senior Bowl, and Mayock openly mocking the 4.2 reports.

I will put him at the 4.48 range.

  • Harder2000

Ok, havent heard the report.. Just saw an interview where he said hes been running 4.2 forties several times in the last couple months, talking about beating the CJ record.. He is a big dude, and if the reports doubt it he might have been talking himself up to get a little attention, looking forward to seing it though..

  • Just Fire Baby

A lot of these guys run these “4.2′s” at the home field, and than go to the combine and struggle to go under 4.4

There are the reports out there, but I don’t think many scouts will put much validity to it, until he runs a timed one at a non-biased facility.

But if he does run a 4.2……………. no way Al will pass him up if he is there in the 3rd round (which I would doubt).

  • Just Fire Baby

Seems like we mixed in some power-scheme with the ZBS last year, and Hue said we will mix it up again as well this year.

Not sure why we need to overhaul the O-line if we are not talking about a huge shift in philosophy.

Get replacements, hopefully upgrades, for whoever walks, but I hope they don’t tell Gallery, Satele, Carlisle, Barnes and Walker to ALL walk.

O-lines need cohesion first and foremost, and if we make wholesale changes along the O-line this season, it may work out real well in 2012 and beyond, but 2011 (especially the first half of the season) will be treacherous.

  • Harder2000

Youre right – about both.. Hadn’t really given it so much thought, just saw the interview and thought ‘good chance he will be a Raider’.. A 4.2 for an undersized tweener would be too much for Big Al, if he wasnt off the board before as you say..

Been thinking about this for years, never really gotten a clear answer: Why is the 40 dash run without pads? Shouldnt there be one with and one without to compare the loss when dressed and to see the potential when not..?

  • Harder2000

Thinking the same thing, they might seek stability, but Hue said that they might sprinkle in a little bit of ZBS, not as much as last year i think, which could show some problems for especially Satele and Carlisle..

  • Harder2000

Keeping Gallery could be very good to help Veldheer with the stability.. Satele as well, at least as a mentor if they draft a young guy, but even though Carlisle is under contract, i dont see him playing a powerscheme.. He would get manhandled by some of the bigger guys..

  • SnB Production

There is going to have to be some type of scheme adjustment on the defense.

The soon to be ex-Raider Asomugha gave up ZERO TDs as a starter last year.

The REST of the team gave up TWENTY-NINE 29!

This secondary is going to be bad next year unless something fundamental changes.

Therefore, the Raiders had better be focused on FIXING the run defense and INCREASING pressure on the QB.

BEcause the secondary is going to give up points!

    The math doesn’t work folks

  • Kirk

Harder, good point on running the 40 WITH pads…

I don’t know about anyone else, but I am excited about Hue Jackson. I think he is going to do a great job.

  • djohnnyg

Wait a sec. Hasn’t his uncle told him what a hell hole of a prison it is in Oakland? Out of 32 teams why the heck would he wanna come here of all places? I thought coaches and players only came here under duress.

  • Just Fire Baby

Carlisle is set to be an unrestricted FA according to Jerry’s article that is linked in the thread.

Of course, all that could change.

Of all the lineman that could bail, although Gallery may be the best, he is too injury-prone for my liking.

He is missing months at a time these days, and really that doesn’t seem like it might improve as the years add up.

Still waiting for McNabb to show up in Oakland.

  • Harder2000

@ Kirk, yeah, Hue is looking good right now, assembling a good coaching squat thus far, especially Wood, Wiz and Saunders – still really needs to add a good DC! With a good draft he will have a good chance to prove his worth!

@JFB, agreed, too injury prone and unreliable, plus he really had some penalties this year.. Still, he was a good influence on Veldheer, helping him out a lot.. Can’t see someone going in and helping him the way Gallery did.. But the injury question would mean he had to sign a reduced salery, which most likely wont happen..
Ok, good that Carlisle is UFA imo, he should go when moving to a powerscheme! Really would like to see Big Bruce take over, and the simplified system might be beneficial to him, time will tell!

  • djohnnyg

This Routt deal bugs me. Did Al really need to pay him that kind of money?

It’s not MY money but it’s money that could be spent in other places.

I’d hate to hear that we can’t sign a great FA cuz so much was wasted on Routt.

What does Al see in him anyways? He watches the same games we do. What am I missing?

  • Just Fire Baby

One thing to know about replacing Cooper Carlisle.

Of course, he really struggled in pass protection at times. This is pretty well-known, and he struggles (although who doesn’t I would argue) against the elite Power D-lineman.

But he has missed one start in 4 years, and once went a whole season in Silver & Black without a penalty, had 3 penalties last season, and 9 in 4 years.

So as far as stability and penalties, he is without a doubt the most consistant of our O-linemen in this regards.

Bruce Campbell might have more penalties in the first month or so of the season as Carlisle had in 4 years.

  • Harder2000

@Djohnnyg, he sees the stats which are in favvor of Routt, and then he sees that he stepped up his game when he was moved to the outside.. IMO he had a pretty good year.. I still think the contract is too much, but Al likes to break the bank for loyal players.. Routt is by no mean a new #21, but he is a pretty good CB,which will show if Awsomeone leaves and the QB isn’t focused on Routts side all the time.. I have no problem with Routt being a starter with us, but we don’t have anyone to start besides him – CJ is horrible, and Ware and WMac needs time..
The contract might have been too big, but its only 7 a year guaranteed, rest is incentives, so lets hope he meets them, cause then he will have been woth it..

  • Harder2000

True, Carlisle has been reliable and penaltyfree, but as far as a powerscheme i just dont see it.. Anyways, they know what theyre doing, good coaches on the line, so they will do what is needed.. Alls well that ends well..
