Could Raiders gamble with RFA tenders?

The Tennessee Titans are planning to issue restricted free agent tenders to four- and five-year players whose contracts have expired before the end of the league year on Friday, according to the Tennessean.

It’s a tact the Raiders could choose with tight end Zach Miller and running back Michael Bush, the most notable players who fall into that category for Oakland.

It doesn’t appear as if Miller was not going to be franchised, despite speculation to the contrary. According to one source, the plan was to keep Kamerion Wimbley through a buyback and franchise Stanford Routt if an agreement on a longterm deal was reached.

When Routt was signed to a three-year extension with $20 million guaranteed and $31.5 million overall, the Raiders instead used the tag on Wimbley when the buyback originally put in the contract by the Cleveland Browns was disallowed for violating the 30 percent rule.

There are no assurances RFA tenders will hold up in a new collective bargaining agreement. If unrestricted free agency is set at four years in a new CBA and Miller and/or Bush are not under contract, they would be on the open market.

The Carolina Panthers franchised center Ryan Kalil , a four-year veteran at a cost of $10 million.

By contrast, a first- and third-round tender last year cost a team just $3.268 million.

I think I have come to the conclusion that the two players the Raiders should target with their first pick in the 2nd Round should be either:

    C- Stefan Wisnewski 6’3, 313.
    or
    RT/RG- Marcus Cannon 6’5, 350.

    Mack,

I really, really like Nick Fairley, but he has lost something close to 20 pounds since the season ended, and Peter King hinted that multiple league sources told him that Dareus will definately go ahead of Fairley.

I never seen a guy dominate like Fairley did at times last year, but I think he has dropped out of the top 5 amongst the NFL teams.

The quote i read said “entertainer & icon” not celebrity.

However sports biz is entertainment biz, players that see the field are entertainers. icon simply means all time great, jordan, ali so on.

I dont have a problem with someone that wants to be great.

why does anyone have a problem with newton even if he did want to make commercials. manning makes commercials, so does breese.

Big hype about a bunch of nothing

  • Just Fire Baby

    Well get some sleep than!!

You got to understand my position, I was listening to Mike and Mike all morning, and the only thing on was McShay saying the opposite of Clayton.

Than you come on and say you heard it on Mike and Mike, and I’m like I was just listening to it and heard no such thing.

I stick to facts, and won’t shy from calling someone else on something.

Here’s the Peter King link on Cam, some positive some negative.

newton makes a comment about icons and enteratiner and get killed. mallet blows off questions about sippin purple drank, and noone even blinks in here.

    double standards, as usual

  • Just Fire Baby

Manning and Brees didn’t have the negative off-the-field stuff that Cam had to endure coming into the league.

And Manning and Brees didn’t ask or declare themselves to be an entertainer and icon, they just put in the work and did it.

    That’s the issue here.

No one will have a problem with Cam being an entertainer if he is a good QB. People will laugh all that stuff off. But people have a problem with someone wanting something they haven’t put the work in for.

Besides, Tebow didn’t get a ton of good press following his commercial last year in the Super Bowl, and was certainly raked over the coals but your ilk.

    JFB,

maybe you are in a habit of lying on sports blogs, and thats why you look to catch other people doing it.

im simply not wired that way bra

  • Mistic1 Tha Supavillain

Its an over reaction and doesnt mean he doesnt want to be the best qb he can.

there is more attention to that sound bite, than the fact that he has been working like a dog to improve his game.

working out with warren moon tells me he is focused. his un deniable gym sculpted body tells me he is a hard worker.

the fact that he scrapped and fought to get his shot to start in college, even going to a junior college, tells me he cares.

his on the field performance, undefeated season, hiesman trophy, national title tell me he is a hard worker.

Did he drop them pounds to try and run a faster time at combine?

I see how weight loss can raise a red flag, but i have faith that a 300 pound guy can regain 15-20lbs back over the weekend if he really wants to.

I dont watch the combine. Never have, probably never will.

But Fairley passes the “eye” test.
    (my eyes in particular.)
And that is all the scouting acumen that i possess.

WR-Juilio Jones would be a steal if he drops out of the top 5.

The Raiders are not expected to bring back RG Cooper Carlisle in 2011.
Carlisle turns 34 this summer and is due $2.5 million, which appears to be too much for a guard who no longer fits Oakland’s scheme. With Tom Cable on the way out, the Raiders are transitioning from a zone to power-blocking system.

  • Silverandblack666

Your man crush on Cam is going to make you lose your man card!

  • Just Fire Baby

Plenty of guys were hard-workers in college, got the big paycheck and lost said work-ethic.

If Cam was a DE, RB or DB, none of this would be an issue.

But QB’s are elevated to the pedestal and dissected a million different ways, due to the importance of the position, and the importance of leadership at the position.

A few workouts in shorts, and a writen apology aren’t going to make those things go away.

Too many Ryan Leafs and Jamarcus Russell’s who have scared NFL exec’s stiff.

I wouldn’t be suprised if some teams that are seriously considering drafting him high are floating some of this negative stuff, just as some form of test to see how he reacts.

    Kim Newton = bust!

  • DMAC

Colorado CB Jimmy Smith measured 6-foot-2 and change, and 211 pounds at the Scouting Combine weigh-in.
He also described himself as a “shutdown corner” with “better ball skills” than Nnamdi Asomugha in media interest. Smith size is elite for a corner, but it will be interesting to see how he runs Tuesday. He’s rumored to be running in the sub-4.5s, and anything in the 4.4s could lock him into round one.

C’mon Jimmy, you haven’t done schit in the NFL man.

  • Just Fire Baby

Fairley weighed in at the combine at 291 I believe.

So he is not even a 300 pounder.

Probably much ado about nothing however. That dude seemed like a beast to me.

The Draft is an inexact science.

Drafting QBs is the riskiest position of them all.
QB requires the most amount of preparation/film study, etc.

That entertainer/icon comment may have been taken out of context.
(Later said he was reffering to his under-armour deal)

ANY TIME you draft a QB high, there will be a bust factor.

All things considered, Mr Cam Newton is worth the risk as a top 5 pick.

    Cam Newton = Steve McNair???

I never saw Mr Air Mcnair at Akron college.

Just saw him as a oiler/titan.

Tough in the pocket. Hard to bring down.
Leader in the huddle. Dangerous on the scramble.
Accurate throws. DBs didnt want to tackle him once he got by the LBs

  • Just Fire Baby

The rest of the NFL does not agree with Mistic that Cam Newton is the best prospect to come out in years.

You may get various reports of where he will go in the draft, but he won’t go number 1 overall, probably won’t be the #1 QB taken and everyone in the media says this a pretty crappy draft class.
