Fox: Wimbley to sign tender
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, February 28th, 2011 at 8:47 pm in Oakland Raiders.
According to a report by Adam Caplan of Fox Sports, the one-year tender to Kamerion Wimbley will be worth even more than expected _ coming in at $11.32 million.
UPDATE: The reason Wimbley’s tender estimate is higher is he received an “exclusive” franchise tag, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. That meant the Raiders don’t want him negotiating with any other teams even if the return was two first-round draft picks. Obviously that would never happen, so you wonder why the Raiders would just tack on another $1 million plus when the original plan was to pay him about $4.1 million on the buyback deal which was disallowed. The final number will be determined by the top five salaries at Wimbley’s position in 2011.
Agent Joe Linta said Wimbley would sign the tender _ and why wouldn’t he? Considering how much more he’ll get than the $635,000 in salary and $3.5 million buyback the Raiders had hoped to pay, it’s a minor upset that he hasn’t already signed it.

Seriously, does that sound like sound management to anybody?

It sounds like ” I am so crazy I’ll pay millions, way more than anybody else, I overpay, look what I gave Jamarcus, so come play for me, I’ll pay you anything you ask, after all, gotta keep up the highest payroll in the league. We’re #1 baby! Come on over and play for Uncle Al. “
February 28th, 2011 at 9:50 pm
I like the resigning of Mr. Wimbley even at $11mill.
Even though they are big bucks, the lengths are short, 1 yr- Wimbley
2yrs- Mr. Seymour & Mr. Henderson
3 yrs- Mr. Routt
so if they do not work out the team is not tied into their contracts for very long.
February 28th, 2011 at 9:51 pm
Here the rumor around the NFL, Al is payin out big bucks, overpaying kinda stuff, and the CBA might lock us out, so lets go play for big daddy warbucks Al and get those big contracts. Look what he payed $DeAngelo$, so lets get on over to see Uncle Al. He knows something.

No, it doesn’t! Not a good move as far as I can tell.
Why not give 96 a 3 year deal, for like 15 mil? He would have taken that… right? Heck even 2 years 10 mil…

3 yrs 15 mill, 10 guaranteed.

How could any player think of playin for any other team other than the Raidahs when Uncle Al is payin out that kind of money. Thats nuts. Come on over and play for Uncle Al. He pays the best.

Matthews probably moved down to the 4th round.

Raiders have committed over $80 million amid labor uncertainty NFL.com Wire Reports
Published: Feb. 28, 2011 at 05:27 p.m. Updated: Feb. 28, 2011 at 10:20 p.m.
ALAMEDA, Calif. — While the Oakland Raiders have handed out some big contracts already to keep potential free agents off the open market, they won’t have to start paying out on those deals until after there’s a resolution to the league’s labor dispute.
The Raiders have made more than $80 million in commitments to five of their players, but none of those deals include any signing bonuses that need to be paid before any games are played.
“When you’re signing these players to contracts the way we signed them, these contracts are all for the future,” senior executive John Herrera said Monday. “These guys will have to come in and play and earn their money before they get paid. The Raiders have not paid out a dime at this point in time.”
The Raiders have been one of the most aggressive teams so far this offseason as most clubs wait until a new collective bargaining agreement is reached before making moves. The current CBA expires Thursday.
Oakland gave cornerback Stanford Routt a $31.5 million, three-year deal, handed defensive tackle Richard Seymour a $30 million, two-year contract with $22.5 million in guarantees, placed their franchise tag on linebacker Kamerion Wimbley, signed defensive tackle John Henderson to an $8 million, two-year deal and signed special teams standout and backup running back Rock Cartwright to an undisclosed contract.
NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora reported on Monday that Wimbley will sign his franchise tender on Tuesday, according to agent Joe Linta.
“What we did is protect our football team,” Herrera said. “These are moves that protect our franchise and protect our team and put us in a position to move on.”
Herrera equated the move to keep Seymour as Oakland’s “first-round pick” this year since the Raiders sent that selection to New England before the 2009 season to acquire Seymour. He has already played two seasons in Oakland, making the Pro Bowl last year as the Raiders finished 8-8 for the first non-losing season since 2002.
Seymour made a big impact on the field, as well as in the locker room where a mostly young team viewed him as a strong leader with the experience of having won three Super Bowl titles with the Patriots.

“In my opinion, he was the heartbeat of our defense as far as high level of performance he demands from everybody on the field,” Routt said. “He’s definitely someone you don’t want to disappoint or let down because he came from New England where he won three titles. You don’t want him to have any harsh feelings about no longer being in New England.”
The Raiders tried to keep Wimbley for much less money by exercising a $3.5 million buyback option that would have given him about $4.1 million next season. But the NFL ruled that contract was invalid so the Raiders used the franchise tag instead to keep the player who led the team in sacks last season.
Oakland views Routt as a potential number one cornerback after he had his best season in six years as a pro last year, putting up some of the best numbers in the league in terms of shutting down opposing receivers.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Uncle Al is setting the pay scale standards by giving routt a lot of dough, and wimbley, and when all the players on the other teams want the pay scale the raiders are forkin out, there owners will tell them to walk, and Uncle Al will snatch them up. He is once again dominating the trends he has set, a true maverick at work. Uncle Al has a bone to pick. Since he was named the most disgusting sports figure in the country, he has set out on a journey to prove them wrong. And when commissioner goodell hands Uncle Al the Lombardi trophy at next years Supper Bowl, Uncle Al will be very courtious in his acceptannce, and thank his head coach and call this the greatest Raidah team of all time. Uncle Al will become the most admired man figure in sports because he has become a generous genious.

At 6-6, 355, he is quite a load on either side of the ball who is best known for being a tough defender who hit Colt McCoy late in 2006
February 28th, 2011 at 10:54 pm
Another player I was impressed with today was DE/OLB prospect Ryan Kerrigan. He looked very fluid today and he look in great shape and he has a great motor, work ethic and instincts.
I would love to see Kerrigan be a Raider…along with Wiz and Cannon as the other players I have been impressed with at the combine.
February 28th, 2011 at 10:56 pm
Fact is a lot of guys on here would be blasting Al Davis if he DIDN’T spend the $ to keep these guys.
“We finally get back to respectability and then Al decides to let the guy led the team in sacks get away. Then he loses his Pro Bowl D-lineman and heart of the defense in Seymour, and then Routt, who’s coming off his best year as a Raider”.
“Way to let all that progress go to he** Al”.
I’m not gonna lose sleep over all this. Also, Al is not done bringing in players. He hasn’t even started. Expect some good players signing with the Raiders before it’s all said and done.
February 28th, 2011 at 10:57 pm
Ryan Kerrigan….a 6′4, 265 pound beast who can play DE or a WLB/WILL LB
February 28th, 2011 at 10:58 pm
I would not be suprised to see Roy Schuening get some heavy playin time @ C in Camp/preseason
February 28th, 2011 at 11:03 pm
How many think this spending on players is Al’s way to break up the players union?
If enuff players have big contracts waiting for ‘em only IF they play, how eager are guys gonna be to hold out?
And/or Al is working on a DC who is saying we have to have these certain players to make him wanna come here?
I’m just throwing some stuff out there.
February 28th, 2011 at 11:12 pm
So 46 solo tackles and 9 sacks gets you over $11million
Why is ther no cap on that. The guy may be worth more to this team than the stats say, but not a dub more!

Wouldnt mind giving Vernon Gholston a shot, still young, great potential, and he would most likely have a better chance to succeed in our 4-3 scheme where he can stay on the line, than in the 3-4 where he is either too small to be on the line, or not athletic enough to play OLB.. He also fits the mold of a Big Al favourite, workoutwarrior with speed, power and high potential.. If we could bring him in without overpaying him, it would be a great pickup imo! Especially as we could use another DE..

I would seriously give both Woody and Jenkins a look. Vet minimum with play time and achievement accelerators. How nasty would we look with a Dline of Shonasty Jenkins Seymour and Houston. Obvious run downs (less than 3 yards for a 1st) with Houston Jenkins Henderson Seymour across the front… wow.
March 1st, 2011 at 6:00 am
…and Damien Woody (if he can recover from the Achilles) would upgrade C RG or RT immediately, and would be a hell of a guy to be role model for the younger guys. Maybe Woody at RT with Campbell at RG…

Gholston managed 38 tackles in 3 years…. his stats make Nnamdi look like a playmaker! Did you know Gholston had a NINE MILLION DOLLAR bonus in his contract for ONE SACK! $9 million to sack the qb ONE time…. he never achieved it.
March 1st, 2011 at 6:03 am
Good Morning Nation!
Shoot, I will sign that too! 11 Million??? Wouldn’t you?
March 1st, 2011 at 6:04 am
G’Mornin fellas.
Bcz..Jenkins might be worth bringing in just to kick the tires…take a physical. Seems to me like the guys knees might be shot. Hasn’t he missed almost like two out of the last three seasons? Basically the whole year.
The guy was a premier D-lineman when he was healthy, though.
March 1st, 2011 at 6:05 am
Good Morning YA, Bcz24!
Gholston had the accelerator for one sack, one forced fumble recovery…Never got it!
March 1st, 2011 at 6:06 am
Jenkins has played in 7 of the last 32 games, but to give the guy a million bucks and some incentives wouldnt be that bad. He was a full time NT for the Jets the last two years, but maybe the guy could hold up to being a rotational player in our defense.
March 1st, 2011 at 6:07 am
I would have paid the opposing Olineman 1 million to let me get to his QB. Id still get 8 million!
March 1st, 2011 at 6:11 am
Clements got cut…Flozell Adams, and Bernard Berrian also!
March 1st, 2011 at 6:18 am

March 1st, 2011 at 6:20 am
Nate Clements could be a guy to look at, hes in the bay area, and could help if we lose Nnamdi. He isnt as good as Routt or even CJ but I gotta think he is better than McFadden and Ware right now, and hell maybe Woodson could get out of him what the Niners thought they were back when they took him from Buffalo. Flozell the hotel is done. Too old. Bernard Berrian wont get a look from us. He would only beat out DHB of our current wide outs and we certainly arent looking to replace him.

Sure seems like Al is going against the grain this offseason. Is AD flipping the league the bird again?
While the rest of the owners are crying poverty and cutting players and salary left and right, Big Al is dealing out lucrative, record breaking contracts.
Mike Brown and some of the other owners must be seething. lol.
March 1st, 2011 at 6:39 am
Mike Brown might be the worst of the lying, greedy owners. He’s making money hand over fist, and refuses to spend money to improve his team.
Then he goes on record and talks about how the owners need a bigger piece of the pie, because they have such horrible expenss that people don’t realize, like the upkeep and cost of improvements for their stadiums.
Only problem with that is The Brown family doesn’t spend one red cent towards those costs. The taxpayers of Hamilton County are on the hook for those bills.
What a joke.

Hwnrdr,
The Bungles. He is the son of Paul Brown, a football legend. The son is an incompetent boob who’s only interest is making money.
Be thankful for Al Davis. You can question his methods and some of his draft reaches. AD has his flaws, but no reasonable person can question his will to win.
The man is constantly trying to improve his football team, and is willing to spend money to do it.
It’s been a long, trying seven years for Raider fans, but I believe he has this team on the verge of being very competitive again. I expect them to win the West in 2011, if there is a 2011 season.
Surely, these fools aren’t greedy and stupid enough to kill the goose that lays the golden eggs.

Raiders OLB Kamerion Wimbley finished as the Top Rated 4-3 OLB in Pro Football Focus rankings.
Interesting, here’s how this guys come up with their rankings:
Pro Football Focus explained:
The goal of our detailed grading process is to gauge how players execute their roles over the course of a game by looking at the performance of each individual on each play.
We look beyond the stat sheet at game footage to try to gain an understanding of how well a lineman is blocking on a given play, how much space and help a runner is being given on a play, how effectively a pass rusher brings pressure or how well a defender covers a receiver.
We collect lots of extra statistics such as yards after catch, yards after contact, missed tackles, dropped passes etc., but our real focus is on grading individual performance on each play.
Did an offensive lineman seal his block to spring the runner through a hole? Did a defensive lineman beat his block to force a runner to change the play direction in the backfield? Was the crucial third-down completion due to the quarterback beating the coverage or a breakdown in coverage?
We examine not just the statistical result of a play, but the context of that statistic.
The defensive tackle may have made a tackle on a play, but if it was third and 5 and he got blown 4 yards off of the ball to make the tackle after a 6-yard gain, that’s not a good play.
What do we they grade?.
Throughout the course of the season (regular season and playoffs) we grade every single offensive, defensive and special teams snap.
We log data such as the point of attack of a running play, the location a pass was thrown and hang time of kicks and punts before moving on to the player-performance analysis.
——————————————————
“Outside Linebacker:
Kamerion Wimbley (Oakland Raiders)
How did this guy get no press? 36 quarterback disruptions as he rushed the passer in nickel situations, and some really strong work in run defense. Finished the year as our top ranked 4-3 outside linebacker. Great pick up.
Moving On Up: OLB Kamerion Wimbley.
A change of scenery did him good. Sent packing from Cleveland’s 3-4 defense to a fresh start in Oakland’s 4-3, Wimbley exploded.
He jumped from the bottom five 3-4 OLB’s in 2009 to the top spot among 4-3 OLB’s in 2010. Wimbley was stronger as a pass rusher from the year before, but we saw a bigger leap in his Run D, improving from -8.6 to a +13.3 grade.”

Nice read. Thanks Bob.
Do you have a link to their site. I’d like to read how Seymour, Kelly and others fared according to their rankings. Thanks.
March 1st, 2011 at 7:10 am
Still not worth 11 million, but they had to put the tag on him to keep him from hitting Free Agency.
He was supposed to have that buyback for 3.5 million, but when that wasn’t allowed, it left the Raiders with no time to work a long term deal, hopefully now they can get to work on such a deal.

Their rankings are hard to find, I think they a have a premium service that you have to pay for in order to gain full access.

I also found their All-AFC West team, wich included:
Defensive End
Richard Seymour (Oakland Raiders)
Seymour was mighty impressive in 2010, getting to the quarterback aplenty (37 QB disruptions) and being a menace in the run game.
Defensive Tackle/ End
Tommy Kelly (Oakland Raiders)
Is it cheating a bit to use Kelly like this? We had to find room for him, if not solely on the back of some superb pass rushing that saw him grade as our 3rd-highest defensive tackle.
Inside Linebacker
Rolando McClain (Oakland Raiders)
The Raiders may have expected more plays from McClain, but he did enough to show he’s going to be a force against the run for years to come.
Safety
Michael Huff (Oakland Raiders)
Another Raider defender who hasn’t received the kudos he deserved. Really good range and a decent enough blitzer as well. Has taken awhile, but starting to live up to his draft status.
Special Teamer
Stevie Brown (Oakland Raiders)
Hurt himself with two penalties, but 13 special-teams tackles represent a good return.
March 1st, 2011 at 7:18 am
They placed Richard Seymour at DE because they said: “We’re using a 4-3/3-4 hybrid in this defense.”
March 1st, 2011 at 7:19 am
Thanks Buckeye…never knew he was the son of the great Paul Brown (as I forgot he was with Cincinatti). But yes, I’ll stick with Al and his crazy ways of trying to win! At least he wants to!
March 1st, 2011 at 7:25 am
Thanks Bob.
You’re right, they need to work out a long term deal with Wimbley. Bring down that yearly cap figure, if there is a cap at all.
It sounds like Wimbley liked it in Oakland, and he and his agent are eager to get an extension done. So, it shouldn’t be too hard.
The guy burst on to the scene as a rookie with the Browns with 11 sacks. Then his play kinda dipped in the 3-4.
I thought the guy might be reborn with a change of scenery. Looked the Raiders had a steal when he had those five sacks in one half vs. da Bears.
Even if it was only in preseason that was an impressive display of pass rush ability.
March 1st, 2011 at 7:26 am
I read that article too where Brown was crying woe is me about stadium upkeep, when his stadium is 100% supported and maintained by the local tax payers. Also an FYI, he and Ralph Wilson are the only two owners to abstain from the vote on the previous CBA. Cincy has a wonderful stadium for its fans, but Mike Brown is effin clueless on what it takes to run a franchise. He wont even pony up for an indoor practice field, which is ridiculous in the North East.

The only thing I will say about Wimbley is he had far to many games where he was invisible. I mean half his sacks were in one game (the finale against KC) and I think all 9 sacks came from 4 games total. I would like to see more consistancy out of this guy, but he is definitely a keeper. Now we need to upgrade the other side, I think QG would be better suited to be a pass rushing end than a full time OLB. RoMac is gonna be a beast IMO. I know there is a lot of hate around here for him, but I think that will all change this year.

They had Wimbley at 3.5, now he’s getting 11 mill?
Seriously, does that sound like sound management to anybody?
=======================================================
Getting him back at $3.5 sounded like EXTRAORDINARILY GOOD management. You want to blame Al for putting a buyback into the contract that the league considered illegal, fine- not the only GM ever to have a deal voided by the NFL.
But this is the franchise tag, and so calling this “bad management” would depend on showing that Wimbley doesn’t deserve the amount of money the tag pays.
Weren’t you just in here pimping the Rooneys? They just franchised Lamar Woodley, who had one more sack and eight less solo tackles at OLB than Wimbley. Was that an example of sound management?
March 1st, 2011 at 7:41 am
Bcz,
I don’t know if I’d say there’s A LOT of hate for RoMac on here.
In fact, I’d say about 90% of it emanates from a small accounting office in the middle of Podunk, Missouri.
Right, Rockstar? lol.

Al is on a hot streak! go go go! I just hope he doesn’t run out of money before he hires a DC!
March 1st, 2011 at 7:47 am
I don’t think the buyback clause was Al’s fault. I believe it was in his original contract between KW’s agent and the Cleveland Browns.
So, unfortunately that lil snafu that made it null and void cost the raiders some money.
However, it will all be moot if a new long term deal is reached. That sounds like a pretty good probability at this point. hopefully.
March 1st, 2011 at 7:50 am
So… Seymore, Routt, and Wimbley @ 10+ per. The salary cap for the 2009 season was 130 mill. So…Al must think 2011 will be an uncapped year, that or he plans to reduce his roster from 53 to 15 players.

I very highly doubt the owners will institute a salary cap AFTER they have already begun making financial decisions. That wouldnt be very sound management on their part at all.

Wimbley’s buy-back option was not created by Al Davis but was in the original contract he signed with the Browns, that the league originally approved. (Since the league approves all rookie contracts)
The league/Browns should give the Raiders some compensation for the pick since it would seem to me it had to be a selling point when the Browns offered Wimbley for the 3rd round pick.

I disagree. It seems like Al is going bonkers, but he doesnt have a first round pick to spend money on, our QB is one of the lowest paid in the league, as will be our OLine. I bet a restructuring is immenant for DHB too, as he clearly hasnt lived up to his contract. We may not agree with how Al is spending the cash or where it is going, but I really dont believe that Al is putting the franchise in a position that it wouldnt be fiscally stable. We all thought the money tree was getting cut down a few years again when we pissed tons of money away (with a cap in place) on DHall, Jwalker etc. and here we are, still able to make these deals.

Seems that way, but maybe Al has already talked to Nnamdi, and Nnamdi told him to put the checkbook away. Seems everyone in the know thinks Nnamdi wants a change of scenery, so maybe they arent wrong. I think if Nnamdi REALLY wanted to be back he would already have a deal in hand.

March 1st, 2011 at 8:37 am
If the owners want an 18 game season, that means an increased roster to get through it. Just one of many reasons that the salary cap might go up as part of negotations. I’m not worried about the amount that Al is spending, it may look cheap when all is said and done.
If the buy back option wasn’t created by Al Davis, then yes, keeping your sacks leader from hitting FA by using the franchise tag is sound management.

M Lonetree, Wimbley workd out. So, you never know. Maybe Gholston can be resurrected too.
March 1st, 2011 at 10:25 am
BTW, is Davis ever going to pick up a defensive coordinator?
March 1st, 2011 at 10:27 am
I’d say Gholston is far more comparable to Jarvis Moss than Wimbley. Wimbley actually looked like a football player at one point in his career. His sack numbers just dropped off considerably after his huge rookie season.
I’d rather the Raiders brought back Jarvis Moss than sign Gholston.

Anyone have an opinion on Anne Hathaway playing Cat Woman in the next Batman movie? I would have rather seen Marion Cotillard play the part.
March 1st, 2011 at 10:36 am
Gholston is a hard worker and even restructured his contract to stay and try to make the team. He didn’t, and he has been a nonfactor for three years, so its fair to label him a bust. But he is not comparable to JaMarcus who wouldnt work and wouldnt restructure to try and get his carrer back on track.. The thing with Wimbley and Gholston is that both are better fit for the 4-3 system, and both were drafted to the 3-4.. There’s no guarantee he would work out, but with a good work ethic, no off field issues, a physical power, low salery and 24 years old, Gholston still has potential to become something in the right system.. At the very least he could compete for a spot, and be cut if he didn’t make it.. Trevor Scott was not that great when he was placed at end again, and Houston has been used on the inside a lot more towards the end of the season, so there could be use for an additional end besides Houston, Shaugh and Moss..

I will say it again. I am ABSOLUTELY certain that Al did not sign these other guys and not have enough money for Nnamdi. Nnamdi may have already told Al to close the checkbook, and most people who know more about football than we do think Nnamdi simply does not WANT to return to the Raiders next year. It is a fact that if Al wants Nnamdi, and Nnamdi wants to return then the money will be there. It is just crazy to think that Al made all these signings, then got to Aso and was like… ooops sorry dude we ran out of money. Gonna have to let ya walk.
I agree that we have appeared to overspend on these guys, but I dont pretend to know how much money NFL teams budget for payroll, and again, I sincerely doubt Al will ever let a player he wants get away because of money.
