Raiders on Gallery: No mutual decision

So much for allowing Robert Gallery a gracious exit.

Gallery’s reward for telling ESPN he was leaving the club because of a “mutual decision” reached with owner Al Davis is the club claiming the issue was really a contract matter.

That’s right.

The organization which rarely discusses anything to do with a contract has trotted out their version of negotiations which ended with the two sides nowhere close in terms of an agreement.

“He was asking for $8 million a year, and we were willing to pay him in the $2.5 million range,” Raiders executive John Herrera told beat writer Steve Corkran. “His asking price was way too high.”

So is this some sort of new era with regard to discussing contract figures? Perhaps they’ll be making that Zach Miller offer public soon.

Doubtful.

More likely, the fact that Gallery spoke at all was an issue, so the Raiders decided to go ahead trash a Tom Cable ally on the way out the door.

the NFL is a “professional” league. No player that comes into it should have motivation issues. Everything you state as his short comings should have been a non issue. It is expected from every player. I imagine it was very exhausting for the staff to spend their day just trying to motivate and hand hold someone to do a job. You can’t motivate and teach someone who doesn’t want to learn…
    =====================================================
Yup. But then again JaBust didn’t draft himself.

Gotta due the background checks, talk to coaches, conduct a thorough interview etc…issue discipline when the plays screws up…

Raiders didn’t do well with that….Davis admitted as much on the background checks etc.

Character is as important as 40x and arm strength.

  • YoungAmerican

    YA,

We’re paying Seymour $15 million per season for a bottom 3 run defense, but we’re only offering Gallery $2.5 million per season for a top 3 run offense

    Right?

    ——————

And an aging John Henderson, who sat out for seven games, got $4 million a year. I don’t blame Gallery for figuring that maybe he’d stay if he could get the Raiders to pay him like that.

  • lefty12

If someone is going to say Gallery was part of a losing culture so he should be let go,well then there are 52 other guys who should also be put in the same category.Except for the punter and the PK no one has won with the team so they are all part of the ‘losing culture’.

  • CMon Man

    Bruce Campbell?

Hmmm, big unknown if you ask me. Let’s see…he has the measurables that go off the chart yet no one took him until Al Davis in the 4th round. I wonder how far he falls if not for Al, who you know was chomping at the bit to pick him up.

He also left college early and had TERRIBLE tape.

Then he gets here and barely sees the field for a team with huge question marks at both tackle positions and guard.

Cable is not a total idiot when it comes to the o-line. Bruce campbell couldn’t get on the field.

Now he’s just going to slot right in. I hope he’s ready because the evidence suggests otherwise.

John Herrera floated the numbers that Gallery was asking for so therefore the $8 million figure is totally unsubstantiated.Herrera is nothing but a clown.

True….but then again the Raiders pretty much have broomed out everyone after 2006.

    Who’s left?

Routt, who is grossly overrated and overpaid.

The kicker and punter (hardly the backbone of any team

    Sam Williams and Thomas Howard.

The Raiders have developed no-one and have nothing to show for all of their drafts prior to 2007.

That and the coaching chaos has helped to tarnish Davis’ recent 25 year legacy

  • big pep

8 mil a year was his asking price? what a fucn idiot, did he or did he not get 76 mil from his first contract? so he can come in and be a franchise tackle? left tackle for that matter, this dude sucs, sucked, and will always suc. i for one was tired of seeing his sorry asss on the dirt after attempting one of those z.b.s. blocks and hit air on his way down. glad to see him gone, what a waste.

and getting no compensation for losing Nnamdi is really a disgrace and the highest measure of incompetence.

  • olinesux

when was gallery drafted? How many wins does he have before last year? The guy was a bust at LT, avg at guard. You cant hold russell accountable at #1 but not gallery…the guy set the team back since he put on a raider jersey.

Gallery wanted out if he asked for $8mm.

Yup he was a big bust though.

All the 1st round picks from

    Bates – bust
Asomugha – leaving with no compensation
    Washington – Bust
    Moss – in trade, bust
    Gallery – Bust
Huff – Leaving with no compensation
DHB – Let’s just call it as we see it

So McClain and DMAC is all the Raiders have to show for 7 or 8 years of 1st round picks.

Its a MIRACLE this team is competitive at all…..

    And don’t forget

    Howard = Bust
deAngelo Hall = traded for 2nd rounder, bust

Just no development of talent in Oakland

    That is very true KoolKell.

  • CMon Man

Al needs to give the coaches the rope and power to do what needs to be done.

Especially on player discipline and running camps.

Especially on adjusting the scheme. The Raiders do not have the horses on defense to run the style they want to. They have to scheme to hide weaknesses in the run defense and increasingly in the secondary with the departure of Huff and Aso

4 new starters on the o-line….and no receiver to really step up and be the number 1 guy…not too mention re-signing Miller.

A lot on the plate for sure

    =======================================================
QB is not the focus now.

You need and not in this order:

    4 O-Lineman to start
1 Wide Receiver that can catch and stay healthy
    1 Weak Side Linebacker
1 Tight End – if Miller is not re-signed
1 Free Safety – if Huff is not re-signed
1 Cornerback – if Aso is not re-signed
1 Defensive Tackle – Run defense needs help!!!!!
1 Running BAck – if Bush is not re-signed

Now if you think guys like Brandon Myers, Jeremy Ware, Walter McFadden, Quentin Groves, DHB and Satele, Loper, Bruce Campbell, Langston Walker, Khalif Barnes, Hiram Eugene can get the job done…

Then by all means…please draft a QB

  • edward teach

Four new starters on the offensive line SOUNDS ridiculous, and I’ve read in here that some folks think it’s impossible and will never happen.

While I think that Satele and Carlisle will start the season for us and that L Walker could also begin the year at RT, I am also aware that we had three new starters at linebacker last season, so four new faces on the o-line next year is certainly not out of the question.

  • anthonyraiders

Dont think i dont know all the problems on this team. I just wanted to see if anyone noticed any qb’s that fit the system. We could have all the problems in the world but does Al care? We will still take at least 3 athletes and I can hope 1 will be a quarterback.

  • CMon Man

    Teach,

    WHy does it sound ridiculous.

Carlisle is rumored to be out the door. Gallery is already gone…and Satele’s hold on the job is a big unknown…remember they tried to get Veldheer in there to replace him.

So there is at least 3 new starters that are very likely….Walker might make it.

As for the three new LBs….they did a decent job I guess…but someone needs to explain to me why this Raider team is not competitive against the run?

Year after year after year of bad run defense.

Claims of “they just have to play better” is the only intelligent answer anyone can come up with.

  • anthonyraiders

I hope D-tackle is taken in the second round. I know we probably lost auso, but with a pick of DL like Paea, we would be solid. We could then in theory put pressure on the QB and stop the run. We can hide are average corners with good pressure

    ===================================================
Your theory is going to be the only way this defense can be successfull. They have to put a lot of pressure on the QBs and stop the run with the front 7.

Leave both safeties in zone coverage and hope that by stopping the run you put the opponent in ovbvious passing downs where you can go to Nickle and Dime defenses.

If they go man up with a bunch of late round draft picks trying to prove themselves…they will get lit up

  • priesttj

Hey KK! did he run the draft last year? and how did we do? If he does even close to that what do you care if he never again goes to the combine, the damn things on TV now anyway and whom ever he wants to have face time with he can fly out here and spend as much time as he wishes. It’s the results that matter.

We have capable people doing the legwork and compiling data. He watches more film than anyone and I think he’ll do fine. I just want this mess with the lockout to get done if that doesn’t get done nothing else matters.

    I WANT COLIN KAEPERNICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!………………..period

  • edward teach

    Cmon Man,

It’s a numbers game. How many draft picks do you want to use on o-linemen when we have other holes, and if you do draft more than a couple, how many are going to start? With Miller, Huff and Bush still unsigned, how much money do you have left for free agents that can come in and start?

Carlisle’s rumoured departure is something I’ve only read about in here. As you said yourself, no one really knows about Satele’s status. There is nothing substantive enough in either case to believe that they will be gone, much less lose their starting jobs. There are three guys already on the roster that could play RT if Davis and the coaching staff wants to go that way.

I’m merely looking at it from a “whole team” perspective, and including the other things that need to be addressed as well. The team may very well feel that we need four new starters. Whether that can get done in one offseason is another thing altogether.

  • anthonyraiders

Ronald Curry was a player who was moved from QB to WR with modest success.

Robert Gallery is a player who was moved from LT to LG with a fair amount of success.

Nnamdi Asomugha is a player who was moved from S to CB with phenomenal success.

Tommy Kelly and Lamarr Houston have both been switched back and forth between DE and DT with recent success.

I agree that the coach switching hampers player development, but you overstate your case.

    **********************
I have a different theory on the run defense issue. Specifically, we only have 7 defenders against the run instead of the full 11. That’s a 37% reduction of players. The reason I say this is that we are almost always in Man coverage and the effect of that is our DB’s are running down field, with their eyes on their man, and they don’t see runners breaking through the 1st & second level defenders (D-line & LB’ers). By the time the DB’s see the runner there’s already a large gain underway. With Zone coverage the DB’s see runners much earlier and can react quicker. That’s just my take on it.

  • DutchRaider77

Davy don’t forget Marcel Reece being moved from receiver to FB.

Continuity is important to the OL, so I’d like to see Satele and others resigned. But the unit wasn’t the strength of the team in 2011 and hasn’t been for years. Starters should come back for stability, but competition needs to be brought in.

John Clayton said in a Q & A that he worried about the Raiders ability to take care of the O Line, thinks they won’t get it done. I think they can do it, but I want to see a commitment in the draft and in FA. 2nd and/or 3rd round, at least two before the fifth round.

  • Macho Man Randy Savage

Have to agree that the Raiders can’t develop talent. If they could develop talent we’d see it in the W column. Nnamdi & Mcfadden are home grown, but who else?

  • DKnight007

Coach Huey is playing with fire if he thinks he can add four new starters on the O-Line and hope they do far better than last years unit.

Last years unti improved as the season went on and they did well with run blocking and were starting to play well as a unit.
