Surprise! It’s Bresnahan as DC
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Monday, March 7th, 2011 at 5:55 pm in Oakland Raiders.
The Raiders are the last team in the NFL to have a defensive coordinator, but Chuck Bresnahan hasn’t fallen too far behind.
Bresnahan has been in the building since Feb. 1, the day he was hired as a “defensive coach” but not given a designation. The club announced Bresnahan had been named defensive coordinator on its Web site Monday.

nobody else wants it, chuck, so i guess it’s yours
March 7th, 2011 at 6:01 pm
I don’t know CJ.
IMO, the position that needs immediate attention is FB. I think Reece is TERRIBLE as a lead blocker! And what he does in the passing game does not offset that.
2nd rd might be a little high for the FB from Stanford, but I’d thinking that’s the route I’d go.
If Locker or Karnepic(sp) fall to us, I might go with one of those guys and sit them on the bench for 2 years.
March 7th, 2011 at 6:03 pm
Chuck Bresnahan was obviously the DC the whole time this farce was going on.
March 7th, 2011 at 6:04 pm
With Nick Miller being resigned ALREADY, lol, I don’t think we are picking up any more WRs. That’s 5 guys under contract that will all get playing time over any other WR brought in. Outside of Chaz getting hurt again before guys like 85 are signed elsewhere, I don’t think we’ll be picking up anyone like that.
March 7th, 2011 at 6:04 pm
Davis knew he couldn’t get anybody else.
March 7th, 2011 at 6:07 pm
Cuck Bresnahan is already broken in on Raider Culture. Know’s how to move his lips, with Al Davis’ crooked fingers up his assz. Perfect Fit, for Al Davis.
March 7th, 2011 at 6:08 pm
LT – Veldheer
LG – Open
C – Satele
RG – Carlisle
RT – Open
Carlisle is still under contract with us. UGGGGHHHHHH. It is what it is. I’d suspect if we were going to cut him then it would have taken place already.
Bruce Campbell is going to play one of the open positions. 2nd rd pick could very well go towards the other open position.
March 7th, 2011 at 6:16 pm
Pick as many offensive linemen as you can in the draft.
Please.
March 7th, 2011 at 6:16 pm
11. RT is not open. I’ll bet Walker’s back next year. That is an uuuuughhhh.
Frankly not sure if B Campbell will even be ready and theres no teling who Davis will take or where in the draft.
March 7th, 2011 at 6:17 pm
Al Davis is the DC
March 7th, 2011 at 6:17 pm
Bresnahan has some decent players to work with even if Nnamdi departs.
March 7th, 2011 at 6:20 pm
What type of coach is Bresnahan?
March 7th, 2011 at 6:22 pm
Walker is a FA.
Bruce Campbell will be starting on the Oline next year. I think Al Davis has made that pretty clear.
March 7th, 2011 at 6:25 pm
They were willing to bring Gallery back at 2.5 million which would have put Bruce Campbell at RT next year. The guy was drafted as an OT prospect. An Oline coach that had other ideas is no longer here. Wouldn’t be surprised to see Walker back either. He’s another guy Al Davis likes.
March 7th, 2011 at 6:26 pm
Lets party like it’s 1999…or 2001… or… never mind.
Well, at least he wasn’t running a bed and breakfast between stints with the Raiders.

We need to sign Andre Davis AND Plaxico… and to resign Huff
March 7th, 2011 at 6:29 pm
Jhill yes….reece is awful blocking wise….we better address or the run game wont be what we think it can be………….as for WRs its a big mistake to not get anew wR. Chaz aint shhhht and will never be healthy for us. miller is trash and needs to go. Bring only ford Dhb and murphy back

March 7th, 2011 at 6:32 pm
I agree with your points on the WRs B.
BUT …
Miller was just resigned. I didn’t see that coming.
And the other 4 guys are under contract and the owner loves them.
The next WR we bring in will be the 6th WR, and I can’t see him getting snaps over Ford, Murphy, Chaz, or DHB. We may WANT to see it, but it’s not going to happen.

March 7th, 2011 at 6:45 pm
how many gamewinning plays did Mitchell make?
oh none, well lets start him then..
March 7th, 2011 at 6:45 pm
Not looking forward to seeing Branch or Mitchell at FS. Branch was our worst DB in pass coverage last year. I suspect if he is heavy on the film room this offseason he could improve in that area. Just seemed like he was lost A LOT on the big plays we gave up. Was statistically the worst SS in the league.
Brown seems like he could be a find.
Huff is the real deal though. Had a great year.
March 7th, 2011 at 6:46 pm

March 7th, 2011 at 6:53 pm
The point is Branch is not a better FS than Huff. Non punk and all.
I have no issue with Mike Mitchell at SS. But he’s not even in the conversation for FS in our defense.
Stevie Brown is the only real option to replace Huff. He better be ready!
March 7th, 2011 at 6:54 pm
I doubt players with 5 years of experience will be RFAs. In which case I really hope the Raiders can bring in Jarrad Page, if only so that they have legitimate competition at the FS spot if Huff walks.
March 7th, 2011 at 6:57 pm
Jhill at least u admit Huff is a punk….why would u want a punk on your defense? Brown can be the FS or let Branch or MM34…fk it those 3 are our guys. A wimp like Huff aint needed
March 7th, 2011 at 7:00 pm
Branch and Mitchell are no better suited to FS than Huff. In fact, either of those guys at FS would be a complete disaster.

true!, Branch should be SS, Brown should at best be nickel, and Mitchell should only be a ST player.. LOL and he was a 2nd round pick…
March 7th, 2011 at 7:02 pm
Huff is a disaster….see how soft he is tackling rbs? Sick of that guy. Look at alot of big plays given up….Huff is in the vicinity that aint a coincidence
March 7th, 2011 at 7:02 pm
I don’t admit that Huff is a punk. I don’t think anyone starting in the NFL at S is a “punk”. Early in the year, I was all over him for some questionable effort in run support. His ride the back approach to tackling was embarrasing. I didn’t see much of that after game 4 or 5 of the season. He was making some nice hits. Made a few in the SF game. And as far as his MAIN job of pass coverage, he VERY good at that.
March 7th, 2011 at 7:03 pm

There should be an open competition between Branch and Mitchell for the SS spot. Branch was too much of a liability in coverage to just be handed the job this season.

La Socilicia…dont come back…u bring nothing when u post. Blog is much better without ya. No one would miss ya
March 7th, 2011 at 7:04 pm
I said this last year…and I feel it again..
There are a lot of moving parts with this offseason and more reliance on players that haven’t had success before (O-Line and Secondary).
Receivers are still a big question mark.
Chuck Breshnahan has to focus on QB pressure. The corners are going to need help.
DMAC, Bush, Miller, Campbell and Ford should form the core of the offense…hopefully one more receiver steps up.
March 7th, 2011 at 7:05 pm
Brown should at best be nickel, and Mitchell should only be a ST player..
——————————————————
Disagree.
Brown a Nickel corner???? Never!
Mitchell made more impact plays than Branch last year. I’d give him a real shot at unseating Branch at SS.
March 7th, 2011 at 7:05 pm
Someone needs to look at this run defense. Still need another big guy to spell Henderson.
If the Raiders can just “slow down” the run…it will put the team in good down and distance situations.

March 7th, 2011 at 7:11 pm
Im sure the Raider staff was sick of watching huff tackle like a princess and give up TDs and he will wanna get paid. Offer him a gallery contract and he can stay lol
March 7th, 2011 at 7:11 pm
Are there really snaps out there for a backup to a backup? Henderson, Seymour, and Kelly are going to get the majority of the snaps. Houston will be moved inside on passing downs from time to time when Scott and Wimbley are at DE.
I just don’t see that role of Henderson’s backup being there. Maybe an undrafted guy that hangs around as a guy that is on the inactive list every week in case Henderson gets hurt. That’s the best I can see.

======================================================
Yup. 27th in the league last year is not cuttin it.
Seymour and Kelly both do the same thing…get after the QB…unfortunately no run stuffer.
But they are going to roll with this lineup. So I guess they just have to play better.
March 7th, 2011 at 7:13 pm
Des Bryant is a better backup to Houston at DE. They need to just leave those 2 guys right there on every down. Forget about the DT stuff.
March 7th, 2011 at 7:14 pm
Jhill,
The Raiders still can’t stop the run. Still one of the worst run defenses in the NFL.
Can’t win if you can’t stop the run
March 7th, 2011 at 7:15 pm
Bresnahan….
Underwhelmed….
Memories of him holding different color cards up to call plays….
Maybe he’s picked up a few more colors to use so our defense isn’t as predictable as it was the last time he ran the show….
March 7th, 2011 at 7:15 pm
We had 3 first year LBs starting for us last year. 2 first year starters at DE.
The run defense will be better next year. No doubt in my mind.

Kell is it? lol thanks for the notice old man
March 7th, 2011 at 7:16 pm
I think the Raiders are pretty stout at the point of attack.

Armond,
Been watching a few W games this past week.
If you want to keep your backcourt, Dorrell Wright is going to have to develop a post game. David Lee and Williams coming off your bench as the 6th and 7th guys could actually work. Same with Biendris. Udoh is a decent prospect and I’d start him at the 4.
If you could find a way to get a big man like Nene to add to those 4, you might be on your way.
Why did you not keep Murphy?
——————————————————-
cuz murphy a biotch who didnt wanna play here. wassup j!!! getting al thorton is good cuz he can be a swingman off the bench who will score aggressively. now williams can just be the backup 2. need a backup point and some athletes in the front court. dubs goin nowhere without a bench. worst scorin bench in the league and its monta’s fault to some people. they need to add about 4 quality guys off the bench and andrins has got to go. we get nothin from him no more. d lee isnt the impact player i was expecting. i thought we were getting some kevin love type of game from him. the backcourt is fine just get them some help. yes dorrell needs to add a post game and he needs to attack the rim more. he plays way smaller than his athletic 6-9 frame should play. BAUCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

March 7th, 2011 at 7:30 pm
Spare me the excuse of gap discipline.
————-
How is this an excuse? The direct result of playing without gap discipline is giving up lots of rushing yards. It’s the easiest thing in the world to see. They could get a 6′1 320 lb Vince Wilfork-esque player, and if they continue to tell him to freelance his way to the ball carrier, the result is going to be the same.
It hurts the team in the same way as over-reliance on man coverage does. It requires every player to be superman, and that’s just never going to be the case. LBs have to shed blocks of 320lb OGs AND keep up with receivers in man coverage, DEs have to rush the passer AND stop the run, DBs have to cover their man step for step the entire way even when only four guys are rushing.
You simply can’t expect to play defense consistently when you play like that. It works when you use it sometimes, but it’s not going to work every time.

——————————————————-
No the thing is I can accept what is right in front of me. Kelly is not going ANYWHERE, lol. If we could trade him for Wilfork, fine. BJ Raji??? Never!
No need in even talking about anything outside of Kelly and Seymour at DT because it’s not going to happen. We were all in agreement last offseason that Seymour should be at DE with Wimbley next to him at SLB. Henderson and Kelly were supposed to be the DTs with ShoNasty at the other DE.
But I guess the coaching staff thought differently.
March 7th, 2011 at 7:34 pm

March 7th, 2011 at 7:35 pm
b, there is no need to cut kelly. seymour got him playin his best. we been waitin 2 long for this so keep him. we can go 9 deep on the dline with a couple more ballers. thats how u keep them fresh and kick azz. the oline is gettin worked over like alot of u wanted. it will be a 2-3 year process. wiz jr might play lg like his uncle with satele at c. the right side will be our make or break. saw some plays from jordan cameron and he is the kind of 6th rnd te to take a chance on. better athlete than miller with the potential to grow like graham with the saints.

The Raiders won three division titles and made a trip to the Super Bowl with Chuck Bresnahan as their defensive coordinator from 2000 to 2003.

And Chuck Bresnahan didn’t have damned ting to do with those titles or appearances.
==================================================
But he was there, doing Als’ will on D, so thats gotta account for something. Maybe the flash cards messed with the other teams head, just sayin.

Steve Sabol in stable condition after seizure
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on March 7, 2011, 10:53 PM EST
NFL Films President Steve Sabol is recovering in a Kansas City hospital after suffering a seizure on Saturday night.
NFL.com reports Sabol is in stable condition and was awake and alert Monday after undergoing a battery of tests over the weekend. Sabol was in town to accept the Lamar Hunt Award for Professional Football on behalf of NFL Films at the 101 Awards.
We last heard from Sabol in Dallas, where we learned that his father Ed would be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. At the time, he talked about how he always made his films with the fans in mind.
A nation of football fans — not to mention the countless people in the NFL Sabol has touched — can join us in hoping for a speedy recovery for Sabol.

Why do people bring up Vince wilfork when referring to a run stufffing DT? The Pat’s stink vs the run worse than we do they just score more and are much more consistent offensively which reduces the # of snaps the defense has to face. The also play with a lead much more often and that helps any defense vs the run.
It aint the DT’s it’s the entire team………….period

Not necessarily. Most 4-3 teams don’t have a guy who is exclusively a nose tackle.
And the only time Henderson played NT was when the Jaguars experimented with the 3-4 for a season or so – which was a disaster. Henderson is too tall to consistently stay anchored against double teams. He was (and still is) at his best in the 4-3 where he could still occasionally penetrate the line and disrupt plays in the backfield.
Good defender against the run? Yeah maybe. True NT that consistently occupies double teams and allows linebackers to come in and make plays? Not exactly.
March 7th, 2011 at 9:23 pm
Breshnahan as DC can be considered nothing less than a brilliant master stroke by Coach Davis.
When “Coach” speaks people listen. Sssshhhhhh..can you hear that? It’s the angels singing the praises of the gladiator of gladiators.
The ancients spoke of a ‘liberator’ who come “come down from on high”. Who is it? Need you ask?
Bless all those who are deemed worthy to speak the name which beofe had only been talked about in whispers.
You only need to say the word “Coach”, and that is sufficient.

—————
“Playing the nose” and being a true NT are two different things.
Playing the nose just refers to an alignment where the DT is playing over center. In a 4-3, sometimes a DT will play over center. Sometimes they won’t.
March 7th, 2011 at 9:32 pm

BHP….how u doing OG?……now best run D’s generally have fat ass in the middle and you cant deny this. Wonder why Dallas is moving jay Ratliffe from NT? Cant take the pounding
March 7th, 2011 at 9:33 pm
Number of tackles doesn’t mean he’s an NT. Stroud played some NT with the Jags, too. They’re a 4-3 team. Neither guy is/was a true, exclusive NT.
Again, didn’t say anything about Henderson not being good against the run. But him being good against the run doesn’t make him a nose tackle.
March 7th, 2011 at 9:34 pm
YA ina 4/3 the DT never plays over the center that is called zero technigue and it only occurs when you are in a 3/4 alignment. There is no real NT technigue in a 4/3 it contradicts the scheme.

———–
Nah, sometimes they do. Depends on the down and distance and the alignment the DC wants. 4-3 defenses can use a number of different techniques depending on the situation. The Colts, for instance, are one of the few teams that use a 9-tech DE as much as they do. Freeney is waaaay outside the offensive tackle. It really just depends on what you’re trying to do.
But while in a 4-3 there could be a bigger, gap-eating DT who is assigned to take on double teams (much like an NT), there is no guy who is going to be playing the 0-technique exclusively like you’ll see in 3-4 defenses.
March 7th, 2011 at 9:41 pm
More times than not in a 4-3 the RDT is gonna get the double teams vs the run just like a 3-4 NT would. And alot of times guy lines over center. What games are yall watching? lol

Tommy Kelly mentioned zero technique, as in he plays it on occasion. Does that make him an NT? Of course not. No more than Henderson is an NT because he plays zero technique on occasion. No more than Stroud is an NT because he played a zero technique on occasion.
These guys are 4-3 DTs whose alignment varies depending on the situation. Not true NTs.
March 7th, 2011 at 9:46 pm
Bauce the best DT’s in the league are mostly not more than 320-30 Aubreyo Franklin is about 325 Ratliffe’s best years he was at 320. But again you’re missing my point it’s NOT the weight that makes them great it’s the technigue and desire. Weight is just a based on personal preference.
March 7th, 2011 at 9:46 pm
But no matter guys….Raiders run defese at best will be in low 20s…until u get a real run stuffer to start we will be weak there….but we shall beat up the qb at least
March 7th, 2011 at 9:49 pm
Lol stroud never ever played zero technique at all…not discipline enuff nor strong enough. Kelly played NT early on but by october they stopped becuz he sucks vs double team
March 7th, 2011 at 9:50 pm
Couldnt agree more kk..im keeping my fingers crossed that we potentially have a home grown DC in the making with Biekert or R. Wood..lets all hope for that.

All the talk about an NT is more or less worthless unless the Raiders intend on actually using the guy like one, instead of having him try to freelance his way to the ball carrier.
March 7th, 2011 at 9:52 pm
Ya wrong…..chester mcglockton was a true NT in same Al scheme….remember why gerard warren wanted out of denver? He hated being a 4-3 NT doing 2 gap and schit……here Al wants pass rush….just shoot the gap and penetrate

Whom [or is it still who] do we draft with our 48th selection?
March 7th, 2011 at 10:09 pm
damn i cant even spell destro’s name right. our lb’s must get after the ball carrier better. we do need a pure run stuffer but we also need to make plays when they are there. missed tackles hurt more than anything. we give up too many long runs that shouldve been 5 yards at most. when that stops then we will move from the bottom 8 to atleast middle of the pack.

When we got Matt Millen from Penn St. he was a DT switched to MLB and he was bigger than our NT Reggie Kinlaw who was 245lbs. but he was as dominant a NT as there was at that time. We won the SB and held the best running game in the league to less than 100 yards and Riggins to less than 60 in the SB.

i like the fact that moffitt is considered a thug on the field. we need some olineman who ruff people up. i think he is being underrated by the experts. i hope they see how important a fb is to this offense. if we get marecic i’d be happy as hell. dont sleep on sione fua either as a dt.
March 7th, 2011 at 10:18 pm
Wouldn’t be surprised to see Moffitt gone in the 2nd round.
March 7th, 2011 at 10:18 pm
I don’t like this move for DC. I liked who we had last year much more than Breshnehan. I remember him giving up a lot of late leads in the 4th quarter with his teams playing back “safe” instead of attacking.
I remember everyone was going on about how the “prevent” gave up so many games with him in and he was like “it’s not a prevent”.

March 7th, 2011 at 10:21 pm
The DT’s on this team do a good enough job that this run defense should be above average but the tackling is at times very suspect and long runs occur. Like the first game of the season when we had CJ shut down Branch whiffs on a tackle and he goes 70+ for more than 60% of his yards on that day. Now was that the DT’s fault or the safety?
March 7th, 2011 at 10:21 pm
Marshall had the Raiders #2 in Pass D & Sacks, and he’s fired for Chuck Bresnahan?
March 7th, 2011 at 10:24 pm
Marshall wasnt fired he was no longer needed without pay.
March 7th, 2011 at 10:25 pm
Same thing in the Jax’s game we have their back dead to rights in the backfiled for a loss and Routt whiffs and he goes for 70+ yards more than half their total in that game. The DT’s shut it down he bounces it and goes 70+ who’s fault is that?
That happens way too often for this run D to be great TACKLING is job No. 1…………period
March 7th, 2011 at 10:32 pm
What about McClain getting locked up with lineman play after play?
March 7th, 2011 at 10:33 pm
Raiderzmaverick that was Rob Ryan. And he was right fans think everything is a prevent. Manyb times when we were just playing zone they thought it was prevent even when it was the first drive of the game. lol
I’m not sure why they selected Bresh but I’m not a fan of his I didn’t like him either when he was her before. He was just a nasty person thought he was above it all. I encountered him many times and he was very condescending. His defenses were average at best. But we had a very good team and we won.
March 7th, 2011 at 10:33 pm
Marshall should’ve been kept. I think they sent him out because he was too closely allied to Cable and his contract finished. Would’ve kept him if his contact wasn’t up, but are trying to “start fresh”…unfortunately it’s a downgrade.

Boston, Celtics’ Center Shaquille O’Neal claims that had he been with Christopher “Notorious B.I.G.” Wallace on the night he was shot four times in the chest, the rapper might be with us today.
Christopher Wallace, aka Biggie Smalls, was gunned down on March 9th, 1997 in Los Angeles, California, just after a party held at the Peterson Auto Museum for the Soul Train Music Awards in 1997.
Shaq, who celebrated his 39th birthday on Sunday (March 6th), said that the day is bitter-sweet, due to his friendship and fond memories of the late rapper.
During an interview with “Outside the Lines” on ESPN, Shaq revealed that he met Sean “Diddy” Combs and Biggie around 1993, after B.I.G. agreed to record on the basketball star’s record “You Can’t Stop The Rain.”
The pair developed a close kinship that lasted up until the night of B.I.G.’s death.
Shaq said he saw B.I.G. at a tattoo parlor on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles, just two days before he was gunned down. B.I.G. invited Shaq to the infamous after party, where the rapper would lose his life.
According to Shaq, he was supposed to meet B.I.G. at the after-party, but he fell asleep in his condo while waiting for his head of security, Uncle “Jerome” Crawford, who could not get past the front desk.
“I was in my condo. I had on a cold white suit, white hat and all that,” Shaq told Outside the Lines. “I was on my way. I was dressed. Usually Uncle Jerome will just come up, but I guess he tried to call and the front desk wouldn’t let him through. I just fell asleep. I woke up about 4 o’clock from a call from my mother.”
The news Shaq’s mom Mrs. Lucille O’Neal delivered was shocking. Her son’s friend had been gunned down just hours earlier, by unknown assailants.
“She said ‘Did you go to the party?’ I’m like, ‘No, what’re you talking about?’ She said, ‘You know, your friend was shot and killed.’ And I was like, ‘What?’ So then I hung up with her and called some people and they told me what had happened,” Shaq told Outside the Lines.
March 7th, 2011 at 10:35 pm
Priest, yeah you’re right…..
I seem to remember though that our offense carried our team much more than the defense when he was in….maybe I’m wrong on that. I probably should look back at the stats rather than trying to remember 10 years ago.

TRADE DOWN!!
March 7th, 2011 at 10:36 pm
Preist… you are right about that. The problem with this run d is that they keep giving up the big play… usually on a missed tackle. Taking a step back the problem is really that teams have long known that you just have to keep hitting the Raiders in the mouth until they fall. On top of that the offense has been so abysmal for so long that teams have been afforded the ability to just keep pounding the ball on the Raiders defense.
Hell I rememebr David Carr throwing for negative yards in the 2nd half of a game in oakalnd with the texans and they beat the raiders by just pounding the ball.
The answer is the raiders have to build an offense that will attack. Hue took a big step forward last year. if he can press forward, I think the d has the horses to get the job done. My only real question is the mental toughness of the Raiders. It is hard to shake being a perinial loser.
March 7th, 2011 at 10:36 pm
meats I concur, I think Al is going to trade Lechler to NE or NYG to get into the 1st round, he will probably have to throw in the Raiders 3rd though.
March 7th, 2011 at 10:37 pm
I think we gonna miss Marshell. But Chuck b has some horses to work with.
Another DT/DE would be good, or a long term replacement for JHendo

Is that your imagination or what because i don’t remember him being locked up on lineman down after down.
March 7th, 2011 at 10:39 pm

Could work.
March 7th, 2011 at 10:41 pm
McClain was getting locked up, alot, imo.
March 7th, 2011 at 10:41 pm
Marshall loved to bring the back 7 in to pressure the
QB. He had a two year contract and the defense took a step backwards last year. I don’t think Chuck B is the answer, but bringing Marshall back would have been worse.
Remember the 5 safety lineup he used vs the jags that got lit up the 2nd half? He lost his chance a new contract that day.
March 7th, 2011 at 10:43 pm
The key to this defense is the MLB and the FS because they are ones that make calls and set the defense. They are also the ones who make the most game changing plays.
March 7th, 2011 at 10:43 pm
McClain’s going to have to get used to having to shed 300+ pound offensive linemen as long as the Raider defensive linemen are all trying to get to the QB instead of occupying blockers.

March 7th, 2011 at 10:44 pm
KK,
Mclain was a rookie last year, and he seemed to catch on the 2nd half of the year. He was injured during the Jags game. I do rememeber him basically killing Darren sproles & the chargers last year. That little quick hitter to the Rb has been haunting the raiders for as long as I can remember. From the looks of it teams will have to look elsewhere if they don’t want their RB’s to get killed.
March 7th, 2011 at 10:46 pm
The numbers don’t lie KK, but it had much more to do with the play of one Richard Seymour, TK, and Houston, and big daddy Waffles!

Those same #’s could have been from being on the field a lot less due to Hue Jax’s offense being able to move the ball and score points.

March 7th, 2011 at 11:04 pm
The stats show the defense got margianlly better, but the Raiders defense also was on the field almost 3 minutes less a game… there is the margin. The defense let the Raiders down last year. The timing was right for a change especially since the DC had finished his contract. I was hoping for a new DC, and think Chuck b is a bit deflating to say the least, but i can see where the defense is going to do what it always has done. Play man to man, and hopefully keep getting after the QB under Wauffle and Chuck

First time caller. Been reading this blog for years. Finally got idea to ring in. Some of you guys are a real mountain of knowledge. Prevent only prevents you from stopping the other team from scoring, so that makes sense because we could get the ball back and score. Jason Campbell quick strike offense will score some points, but the defense will be on the field a lot if we don’t play prevent. Yeahhhhhhh, that makes a lot of sense.

5th Rd- Buster Skrine CB UT -Chattanooga( did i spell that right)
6th rd- Nevada TE
7th Rd- Ricardo Lockette… with all due respect to Gil Brandt and his hot 100 I don’t see this kid rising too high when nobody knows anything about him or if he can even play football

Just to be clear, I really don’t think the above is an ideal draft, nor do I think it’s what will actually happen. I was just trying to put together the most stereotypical Al Davis draft I could think of.

YA… i see. March 7th, 2011 at 11:22 pm
Al loves his size and speed guys.
Hope fully he sticks to the script he ran last year, and gets some football players in the first 3 rounds that can play today and go for his scholarship players in the 4th-7th. He sure did hit a homerun on Jacoby ford. I think Stevie Brown is a good football player as well along with Walt Mcfadden, but only time will tell.
March 7th, 2011 at 11:24 pm
I really wouldn’t mind Lockette in the 6th or 7th if there are no better options. Best case scenario, he’s a more durable Chaz. Worst case scenario? He still might play DHB off the roster…

March 7th, 2011 at 11:39 pm
Lockette size and speed are very intriguing. Its worth the pick late.
To be honest I think Al davis has been hit by a case of reality over the past year, the raiders are cash poor, and have are loosing season ticket holders at an alaming rate… I think that was the main reason Al was restrained a bit last year and made sound decisions on draft day and stayed away from other peoples Free agents. He simply can’t afford to miss these days, and he knows it.
So he will spend $ on guys he knows can play today. Routt, Seymour, and Wimberly are all solid players. Mclain at # 7 was really uncharateristic of Al davis but when you look at it through the lens of a football player with high IQ; championship caliber; good size and speed, and can play day one… it makes a lot more sense.

March 7th, 2011 at 11:46 pm
Dirtee from what I hear, al davis was mad that Henderson was not given any reps at RT after he lost his job to Veldaheer. I think Henderson or Langston walker will be manning the RT position this year for the raiders. Al drafted both of those men high, and he will want to see one of them get the job. Campbell will get a shot at RG, Satele will compete with a youngster at center, and LG in this year’s draft is gauranteed.

Lucky for us that won’t happen. This draft is top-heavy with defensive players, and with at least three teams looking to take a QB and guys like AJ Green, Julio Jones and Mark Ingram also out there we should get a crack at a pretty good o-line prospect in round two.

Someone asked me a few weeks back who the DC would be, and I said I’d have preferred Moss, but that I thought KK and co were right and it would be Chuck.
And that is a disappointment, I’d have preferred a hot hand to a retread. What it isn’t is a disaster. Waufle and the DL are going to make Chuck look good. I think with young players like Houston and Shaughnessy coming on and with Wimbley back for a second year. that the DL has a chance to be even better in 2011.
Give Chuck no credit for what happens, call him a retread, call him a Seifert or a Switzer if you want. But are you prepared to say the QB won’t go down hard in 2011? Because I think he will . . .

“It’s 8 o’clock in the morning. I had just woke up. I was thinking I can’t wait for this camp to be over with so I can get back to Texas, but somehow that little small banter got me motivated to compete instead of going through the motions like I had planned to.”

Well, we all knew it was coming, time to analyze.
By the way, I’m no big fan of Chuck, never was.
But I see someone posted about Chuck B and his last NFL job as Cincy’s DC.
I ran into an article about it, Chuck’s stint was sandwiched between two of the most respected defensive minds around, he replaced Leslie Frazier who was fired and was later replaced with Mike Zimmer.
The article looked at the numbers between 2003 to 2008 which was Zimmer’s 1st season replacing Chuck.
The writter noted how the Bengals Defense sucked during that period and it sucked under Frazier, Bresnahan and during Zimmer’s 1st year.
So maybe it’s not that fair to judge Chuck based on his sitint with Cincy since Frazier and Zimmer, who are highly touted struggled with that unit as well.
Still there’s a lot more to be looked at regarding Chuck and his first stint in Oakland, but I’m out of time now, have a good one fellas.

By the way, someone made a good point yesterday about how we played with 3 new LB’s last year….just to follow up.
But not only were they new players with no familiarity betwenn them, they were also playing new positions.
McClain was a rookie coming from a 3-4 system, Wimbley was a 3-4 oustside rusher and Groves was a DE in a 4-3.
With a year under their belt, you would figure the LB unit should only get better next year, specially vs the run.

I love the way Jackson insists Bresnahan was his “choice.”
He just so happened to choose a guy Al Davis likes, a guy who couldn’t get a job in the NFL the past two seasons.
So now it will be Bresnahan’s “choice” to have Routt and Johnson play press coverage every down — while Nnamdi has a bunch of picks somewhere else.

Look at Charles Woodson. 17 picks and 2 TDs during 8 seasons in Oakland. 30 picks and 8 TDs during 5 seasons in Green Bay.
Revis is as good as Nnamdi, but gets plenty of action in New York.
Nnamdi gets isolated because the Raiders play Big Al’s high school-level defense. Few disguised coverages, few stunts, nothing for an offensive coordinator to worry about.

I will be interesting to see Nnamdi play somewhere else to see how teams attack him. I think Nnamdi ends up with his probowl buddies Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Terrell Suggs…etc. Baltimore seems like a the perfect fir for Nnamdi, and if Chris Carr is there best CB, then you know they will be shelling out big $ to bring him in.
On side note I alwasy thought Chris carr was gay… literally the dude has sugar in the tank.

Honestly i think Huff is a good player, but as far paying him big $ when it seems like you have a young talent like Stevie Brown waiting in the wings is a mistake. Remember Nnamdi making the comment about the rookies, and going out of his way to say that Stevie Brown just makes plays every time he is on the field. Brown backed it up with limited time he got last season. I can’t wait to see this kid play at FS next year.

The deal includes $300K in bonuses and a first-year salary of $1.9 million. Loper, 29, started four games last year at left guard in place of an injured Rob Gallery. Loper performed poorly and typically has whenever given an opportunity, but he is currently considered the favorite to replace Gallery in 2011.

We don’t see what the Raiders like about Bennett, but the 33-year-old to be received just two carries in seven appearances last season, and dating back to 2006 is averaging 3.54 yards per attempt. It would probably be in Oakland’s best interest to move on, but perhaps owner Al Davis envisions Bennett as insurance in the event he’s unable to re-sign free agent Michael Bush.

I see Houston making the biggest splash in the Nnamdi sweepstakes. They have all the pieces in place, except a secondary.
Its weird that that site said Loper performed poorly, I was under the impression, as were many people including Jer that there wasnt much of a drop off between Gallery and Loper, however I think a little over 2 million is a kind of steep.
No idea why they kept Michael Bennett, unless he is intended to be a camp body and cut before the season.
March 8th, 2011 at 10:02 am
Nnamdi wants to play for a winning team. You can scratch Houston off his list.
March 8th, 2011 at 10:02 am
My sources tell me that the framework of the new CBA is complete and both sides are working out the last details. Some of the highlights of the deal are as follows:
It is a ten year deal, with opt outs after five years for both sides;
The owners will be allowed to set aside $2 billion prior to revenue sharing for the next three years, and $1.5 billion for the following seven years;
The players will get 55% of total revenues after the $2 billion set aside, and the owners will get 45% for the first three years. In the final seven seasons the players will get 53% and the owners will get 47%;
16 game schedule remains;
The owners get their rookie salary cap, which will be 50% of the salary of the prior year’s highest paid player in the NFL for the #1 pick and sliding down on a scale for the remaining first rounders. The signing bonus and other bonus loopholes are now closed. In return the players will be allowed to go into free agency after 4 years with no ability of the team to re-negotiate the contract until after year 3, but the rookie contracts for the 1st through 3rd rounders are guaranteed so the players have some security. The savings will go to veteran players by way of a salary minimum each team has to spend, which is 70% of each year’s salary cap, so the teams can’t just pocket the savings.
The NFL will set up a new retired player assistance program for emergency low interest rate loans for players with documented medical issues stemming from injuries sustained during their careers, and optional low cost insurance policies for former players and their families with the NFL paying 25% of the premium.
The season has been saved baby!
March 8th, 2011 at 10:03 am

There was no dropoff whatsoever when Loper took over for Gallery. And Loper has the size for a more power-based blocking scheme.

Houston will be a winner with a better secondary. They have a top 10 (probably top 5) passing game, the best rusher in football last year, a solid run d (top 10). Their weakness is their secondary. Opposing quarterbacks picked them apart weekly. Signing Nnamdi would be a huge step for them, and I am sure they will also adress that area in the draft.

As far as Breshnehan goes, it looks like Al’s surrounding Hue with his guys. Hue’s doing a good job of pretending he’s all for it (as if he’d much rather have Al Davis choose a staff for him than put his own staff together…). Hue seems like a smart guy and I’m pretty sure he’s working Al like Gruden and Kiffin did, but he’s dealing with a meddlesome owner who’s even older and even crazier than what Gruden and Kiffin dealt with. He’s going to have his hands full trying to really build a team here while pretending he’s going along with crazy Al. He’s got the toughest job in sports right now.
March 8th, 2011 at 11:16 am
I’m willing to sacrifice a year of football, two even, for the players union to win this fight. NFL owners have so much power right now it’s almost funny. Any concessions by the players union, they only get more power.

Dakota, there is nothing, anywhere on the internet, about any CBA developments. What’s your source? I hope you’re not right, to be honest with you. I’d like to see more health care for retired players. “Emergency loans”? You have to be kidding. Only an idiot couldn’t see though that. They’ll deny them when the time comes on bogus technicalities.
The only significant NFL news today is that Steve Sabol of NFL films had a seizure. Hope he’s alright. NFL Films are the only games the Raiders dominate anymore..
March 8th, 2011 at 11:22 am
Well, I’m sure your union’s glad to have someone as management-friendly as you, Ray. See you guys later.
March 8th, 2011 at 11:23 am
The main points Dakota posted seem fair. Owners get about $62.5 mill per team in revenue exempt from profit sharing (about half of the TV deal) and the rest is a 55-45 split in favor of the players. Either side can opt out in 5 years. Im curious as to where your opinion stems from RMR, because the entire reason the owners opted of this deal was because it was skewed too far in favor of the players (not necesarily saying I agree, just that that was the reason)

Time to break up this cat fight…
“Q:How as Loper done as a substitute for Gallery?
Cable:He’s done all right. He’s a guy that did his job, a backup player that came in when needed and plugged a hole.”
Also Loper was inactive for many games: Denver, KC, Jaguars, San Diego…
Not hard to find search “Loper” in the search field of the JMac’s blog.
It appears Cable did not think too highly of Loper…for whatever reason.

Oh bummer, the entire CBA agreement has been thrown out the window due to a disagreement over the size of the numbers on the jerseys. The owners want 17′ numbers and the players want 18′ numbers. Looks like we are headed to a lockout.

“wasn’t much of a drop off”=drop off.The mob mentality took over where Gallery was concerned.People on here hated Cable,Gallery came out in support of Cable, therefore the mob instantly hated Gallery-unfairly I might add. That is the way this blog is.Make something up,repeat it 4 or 5 times and within a week someone will using it as evidence to support a statement.

Exactly….and those people might have been Herrera or old man Al “plants” on this board.

BTW, BLET local 31 in WY, and the NFL should consider how miserably they fared with scabs in the past before they deny the players their fair share. Without the superstar players, the NFL is the USFL or the XFL (or whatever they call that crap). People won’t pay to watch the scrubs now just like they didnt pay to see them before.

I don’t think the NFL can use replacement players in a lockout…..only in the event of a player strike.

Are UFL Players unionized?
And if so….can current NFL players sign to UFL teams?
Will the UFL be expanding to accommodate all these players?
Will current NFL teams pull out of the NFL and jump ship to UFL?

There was no point in getting rid of Marshall and bringing in Chuck B.
Old man Al just wanted to save money by getting rid of Marshall and hiring a man who has been out of the NFL.
Lousy….but gotta hope for the best I guess.
Ugh

According to two new polls, Americans are siding with public sector unions… and most Wisconsinites wish they hadn’t voted for Scott Walker
More than half of Wisconsin voters say they side with public employee unions, according to a recent poll.
The numbers are in… and the news is good for government workers. According to two new polls — one a nationwide survey by The New York Times/CBS News, the other a Wisconsin-specific poll from Democratic pollster Public Policy Polling — a plurality of Americans support public sector unions and oppose weakening collective bargaining rights, though in many cases, the divide is close. Here, a brief guide to the polls, by the numbers:

Correct. There will not be a lockout though. That was thrown out as soon as the owners were told they wouldnt be able to access the $4 billion in TV money.

Agreed!
Marshall, Haluchak & Washington = Bresnahan, Biekert & Woodson
Tollner + Hackett = Saunders
Hue Jackson is running the offense again and Al Davis is running the defense again.
I see no upgrades to the coaching staff.

Marshall = Cable’s Guy?
(Remember the Cable/Hanson incident was allegedly b/c Randy was talking smack to Marshall.)
“Jeremiah also wrote on his Twitter page that Cable reacted when Hanson spoke profanely to defensive coordinator John Marshall. Cable rebuked Hanson, then pushed his chair, which caused the injury.”
