Eugene, Loper as starters?

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, March 8th, 2011 at 4:16 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Contract figures made available to Bay Area News Group indicate the Raiders may be looking at free safety Hiram Eugene and guard Daniel Loper as potential starters.

Eugene, signed before last Thursday’s deadline, signed a four-year contract which pays him $2 million this year, $2.25 million in 2012, $2.75 million in 2013 and $3.25 million in 2014.

It’s enough money to believe the Raiders have him in mind to start if they don’t want to compete with another team to sign incumbent free safety Michael Huff, scheduled for unrestricted free agency upon completion of a CBA. The Dallas Cowboys, with Rob Ryan as defensive coordinator, are rumored to be interested in Huff whenever free agency begins.

Loper’s deal was even more eye-opening.

Paid $630,000 in last season, Loper’s two-year contract pays him $1.9 million in 2011 and $2 million in 2012. He started four games at left guard for an injured Robert Gallery, during which time the Raiders were 2-2. Loper was inactive for six games.

The Raiders have also re-signed quarterback Kyle Boller to a one-year, $1.25 million contract, a $250,000 raise over last season. Quarterback Bruce Gradkowski said he hasn’t heard from the Raiders and Charlie Frye is scheduled for unrestricted free agency.

Running back Michael Bennett’s one-year deal will pay him $865,000.

NOTE: Mac’s Football Blog, a solid resource for salary information, reports the Raiders also paid a tidy sum to bring back defensive tackle John Henderson.

Henderson’s deal included a $1.5 million signing bonus and $1.5 million guaranteed for skill and injury. Henderson showed he still could be a force in the middle of the defense, but missed seven games due to a stress fracture in his foot after missing four games in his previous eight years.

I like the resigning of Mr. Loper, gives the Raiders options at the draft, makes them less predictable for their 2nd & 3rd round selections.

Round 2: C Rodney Hudson, C Stefen Wisniewski
Round 3: OG Clint Boling, OT Jason Pinkston
    Round 7: OT Jah Reid

Why would Huff re-join Rob Ryan?? he singlehanded ruined Huffs career, yeah smart move to have him coach Huff again…

  7. Jesus Says:

If Eugene is back might as well sign other scrubs like Bruise Gradkowski …

I have no trouble with Loper the Roller playing LG, though.

    Shaughnessey Kelly/Henderson Seymour Houston= solid
    Wimbley Mcclain Goethel= solid
    Branch/Mitchell =solid
    Routt CJ/Mcfadden/Ware=not good

I’m excited about Woodson as DB coach but Al hasn’t given him much to work with so far although I beleive Mcfadden can be a player

Thats one hell of a raise for Loper, the Coaches must see something in him, that we haven’t..

What do you think of Colin Kaepernick?
    Sounds like a Davis QB?

  14. Crimedog Says:

With the personnel decisions that have to be made this offseason, it really makes you think about what a waste of a god season last year was because we didn’t make the playoffs. We could go into next year without Aso, Huff, and Gallery which will leave us a little bit weaker. Sorry, but Cable blew it by not getting it done out of the division.

  15. RaiderSnake12 Says:

Just when Huff was starting to come around too….I know it took forever but he was starting to become that guy they culd depend on back there….Hiram is no where neat Huff’s level!

  16. RaiderSnake12 Says:

That single high FS the raiders depend on is sooo important, I hope they know what they’re doing…

    @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

Guess this blows up the myth that Bruise was ever a Hue Jackson guy. I always thought Boller was better than Bruise anyway. And as a bonus, the guy seems to know his role.

  18. YoungAmerican Says:

Kaepernick and Mallett both sound like prototypical Al Davis QBs.

Honestly, if this team is planning on starting Loper, Satele, Campbell and Henderson on the line, and having Hiram Eugene and Chris Johnson in the secondary, it might not be a bad idea to try to find a QB who can run like hell and put up a lot of points… because the Raiders will need both of those things to overcome sub-par personnel.

As I’ve said before, the draft will determine how this season turns out.

  19. YoungAmerican Says:

I really don’t like Mallett. Not because he’s slow or anything, but because he’s a Bobby Petrino QB with a JaMarcus-esque inability to grasp what it takes to be an NFL QB. Too many red flags to ignore.

  20. RaiderDebo Says:

I like Mallett a lot. Love the production. Didn’t realize he led Arkansas to its first BCS game. I also love the way he doesn’t take any schitt from the media. He’s ultra talented with a chip on his shoulder. My kind of player.

  21. UCLA Raiders Says:

WTF? Eugene is now paid over $2M? He can’t even tackle. Who could forget him missing a tackle on Kitna to lose first game of 2007 season.
This proves Al Davis has lost it. He can’t evaluate, period.

  22. SnB Production Says:

Is it to early to call the secondary the weakest unit on the team?

  23. dickv Says:

This all makes sense. Eugene beat out Huff for FS most of 2009 & and some of 2008. Loper was solid when he came in for Gallery. With huff and Gallery it is one of those wins over replacement type of situations… how much do they actually help you win compared to their back ups… I know all the nay sayers are going to see this as a bad thing, but I don’t think either one were worth bringing back.

Loper and Eugene will be both hard pressed to even keep their jobs, but at the salary they are mking you can keep them on the roster and have a young draft pick fight it out for a spot with them.

  24. SnB Production Says:

Run defense is 27th…pass defense 10th….

So let’s get a new Free Safety and replace the All World Cornerback?

Offense better put up some points.

the way Rob Ryan used Huff, its not a fair comparing..

Eugene sux, but he is a great ST player..

  26. YoungAmerican Says:

Loper and Eugene are great signings as key backups. Eugene is a very solid special teams player.

But if either of these guys crack the starting lineup, it won’t be a good sign.

Loper might not be bad with other upgrades along the offensive line, but if the Raiders stand pat everywhere else, with the exception of Campbell playing RG? I have serious doubts…

  27. Carl Weathers Says:

Wow! Hiram “I should be serving coffee” Eugene?!?!?!

I was OK, with Routt getting a huge payday, the man showed he can be a starting CB, Seymour Is a leader and stud D-lineman, Bresnahan as D-coordinator, sure I don’t mind, he’s a company man that has gotten results in the past, but Eugene? Eugene the non-tackling machine?!

If he’s starting next year I’m gonna fuggin puke!!!

  28. SnB Production Says:

Eugene was very forgettable in his time.

Not saying that Huff is all-world…because he’s not…but it took the Raiders damn near a decade to get competent Safety play….

Eugene & McFadden for Huff and Asomugha?

Increasingly, the Raiders have NOTHING to show for the draft prior to 2007…and the top pick in 2007 BUSTED out in fantastic fashion

  37. TerrapinRaider Says:

So Eugene “possibly” for Huff ..really not too big of a deal. Maybe a slight downgrade but players change they get better. Maybe its Eugene’s ‘time’ who knows except the Raiders?

Loper for Gallery? Really not a major deal. Gallery was good, but we didn’t fall off when Loper came in either.

Why waste big money when you can get the same quality for less?

Sometimes we let the name dictate our thoughts without really looking at the product on the field. Huff – 1st rounder. Gallery – 1st rounder. Both big names in our book vs the potential replacements.

Yes, with a Coogi sweater for good measure …..LOL

(imo that has to be the worst sweater in the history of fashion)

  39. SnB Production Says:

    Terrapin,

I think all these moves just shows that the last decade was a “lost” decade.

The entire team, if Huff and Aso are sent on the road, will be made up of either free agents or players drafted after 2007.

With the exception of Stanford Routt, the kickers Sam Williams….Thomas Howard is also a non-contributor on the way out.

I hope Al Davis and the front office reevaluate their draft picks the last 10 years.

To only have 1 contributor (non-kickers) to show for all your draft picks prior to 2007 is a tough deal.

  40. TerrapinRaider Says:

There’s no debating that really. (Well you can possibly debate anything …that is to say we didn’t have the coaches or stability necessary to bring out the talent we had)

But really, its been a lost decade for the team of the decades

  41. RaiderDuck Says:

I suspect that this non-guaranteed deal for Eugene is more an insurance policy in case Stevie Brown isn’t ready to start. If Brown IS ready, they can cut Eugene and bring him back for less money.

  42. TerrapinRaider Says:

On Kim Newton ..while I’m at it …I’m not sure the context of his comments but at face value they were certainly a red flag. Similar to my thoughts after listening/watching JR before we drafted him (thats when I just jumped on the wagon ..before then I was like hell to the NO).

Dude must first become a great QB before he can be an “icon” in anything. His focus/priorities may be all screwed up. Plus he’s not a throwing QB …just not what you want to see.

  43. YoungAmerican Says:

I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Raiders try to force Mitchell into a FS spot where he doesn’t belong. Al doesn’t like when his project picks don’t see the field.

  44. TerrapinRaider Says:

And he’s not even that fast …lol

I just dont get the hype …must be a poor QB class

Now Bradford …THAT GUY ..when I saw him in college I was like he is going to be damn good. Smart as all hell and accurate. That guy will be good imho …but that story will be written. (Still on a poor team though).

  45. ohioraider Says:

Here’s what Father Pride & Poise says about these latest moves:’
“Sometimes I think they do that because they know someone wants the player and sometimes so no one will want to pay the price.”

All of a sudden, Al becomes “they,” and thus ensues this patently weak rationale for this sudden lavish spending. Hey Priesttj, c’mon, you know the real reason: Fkin Al has finally gone off the deep end! He thinks he already has a playoff quality roster! Gonna set up the coaching staff to take the fall once more if they don’t get there. You know the routine, right brother?

Seriously, Davis is completely off his rocker.

No way in hell MM34 is going to play FS.

I’ve said this time and time again, if anyone, it would be Branch because of his speed, range and tackling ability.

MM34 is born for the SS spot.

  48. severeraiderz Says:

I hope we take Kapaernick at some point in the draft. He has great size, can get out of the pocket, has a rocket arm, has tons of experience, is a leader, and a hard worker

  49. YoungAmerican Says:

Whether it’s Mitchell or Branch, both tend to be liabilities in coverage, and shouldn’t be the last line of defense.

I would like to see an open competition between them for the SS spot, though.

    ///////////////

Branch at FS is a dangerous proposition, he couldn’t cover a bed with a blanket

  51. TerrapinRaider Says:

MM34 should start at SS. Thats as open as it gets for me : ).

Branch should, again SHOULD, be better in coverage given his time as a CB in college. He’s not that bad of a tackler. He had an awful year that made him probably look worse than he actually is. I say work him in at FS or have him backup SS.

  52. TerrapinRaider Says:

If you put RoMac and MM34 on that field snap after sanp …I’m sure you would see even more energy out of that defense ..because those boys will HIT!

  53. YoungAmerican Says:

I think Branch can definitely improve his coverage skills and just had a down year, but I’m not sure a position change will do him any favors.

  54. meatheadraider Says:

i thought huff would be leaving the team but my grandmother says no.

  55. SnB Production Says:

Seroiusly, unless Rod Woodson is as good a coach as he was a player…that secondary is going to struggle mightily.

The only solutions to this is:

    1. Change the scheme up…more zones….
    2. Stop the run and force favorable down and distance
    3. Get after the QB on obvious passing downs
    4. Offense score A LOT MORE POINTS!

  56. YoungAmerican Says:

I’d like to see Mitchell on the field more, but he’s not a fit at FS. So either more “big nickel” packages or he needs to take over for Branch.

Mitchell seemed to be the Raiders’ answer to Antonio Gates, and that’s good enough for me. I want to see more.

Rich Gannon got called out by this dude in Texas today on Sirius radio. A previous caller criticized Blaine Gabbert for not throwing at the combine and Gannon spent two minutes defending him, saying that Tom Condon (Gabbert and Gannon’s agent) is the best in the business and that Gabbert was just listening to his advice. Then the Texas caller got on and said Gannon had no business defending Gabberts’ ACTIONS (choosing not to compete at the combine with questionable production in college) while spending three days criticizing Newton for using the WORDS “icon” and “entertainer”. Gannon started backpedaling his ass off. He had to give credit to Newton for his ACTIONS; his otherwordly production in college and his willingness to showcase his wares and compete every chance he gets. I agree. Who gives a damn about what he said about being an icon. Hell, with what that guy did in college, you could argue that he is one. Bottom line is as a competitor, he’s blowing Gabbert out of the water right now.

We probably won’t draft a QB anyway. But if we do, it won’t matter who it is if there’s no stability in the coaching staff and he’s surrounded with a piss poor supporting cast. He’ll be doomed to failure here, just like JR.

  64. meatheadraider Says:

there is a better chance of me being drafted by the raiders than cam newton.

  65. TerrapinRaider Says:

If its hard to determine where a team will go with their 1st pick then you probably had a pretty damn good team. The Raiders had a pretty damn good team last year but f’ked it up under Cable.

If they are cool with Loper and Campbell they may not even go OL in the 2nd. Maybe CB; but who knows ..maybe Nnam resigns. DE, but Shonasty is pretty decent and Houston is not coming off the starting blocks ….we have to true glaring needs outside WR that I can think of (and they prob wont look to the draft to sure that up).

  66. SnB Production Says:

Drafting guys like Cam Newton and Ryan Mallett are risks. You have to have a strong coach and strong and positive team culture.

The Raiders just don’t offer that. They need the self-motivated.

Mr. Stevie Brown will beat out Mr. Eugene for the starting free safety position, thereby Hiram will be cut; so I’m not concerned about this news anyway.

My thinking is and I think it is Hue’s as well is it would have been difficult for Brown to beat out Mr. Huff, even if he earned it.

This way the the promotion/benching/cut goes smoother.

also should Huff be signed as a safety, Raiders could move him to start in Nnamdi’s spot, should the Raiders not resign him.

  71. priesttj Says:

Is this some kind of JOKE or what Jerry? You are losing it buddy if you think this is starter money then I got news for all of you. This backup money if I’ve ever seen it. Eugene is a great ST’s player and he’s being compensated for it, also he is a good fill in, in a pinch. Loper played well as a backup and I like him as I said earlier he is a keeper and to keep him you have to pay him……………period

To suppose this as starter money you have to be brain dead.

  72. priesttj Says:

I wholeheartedly agree with T’pin at the FS position being Branch he is a natural FS his cover skills tell you that Mitchell is much better cover guy thus he should be the starter at SS and give Branch the chance to run and hit and make plays the wya Huff was allowed to do. Huff excels when put where he belonged and I think Branch will as well.

  73. RaiderRetribution Says:

125,000,000 split up by 55 players

that is a little over 2 million a player, so Priest is correct that is just back up FS, solid special teams palyer money.

I still think Stevie beats him out though for the starting fs position as the coaches are really high on him.

  74. KoolKell Says:

I’ve got my doubts about Branch, not a great tackler either.
I’d rather see Stevie Brown at FS, he’s shown a nose for the ball and the play.

  75. Chris in NY Says:

I’ve gotta say the moves we’ve been making have me worried. With the money thrown to Routt, Eugene and Wimbley we probably could’ve had a shot to sign Nnamdi, Huff and Wimbley (to a lesser deal).

I actually like Eugene as a special teamer and a backup safety. I think he’s a decent player, but the kind of guy you’d like to keep around on the cheap, not pay starter money. Paying Routt $10 million per still blows my mind. No way he comes close to that on the open market. Isn’t that pretty much what Revis is making? And we’re going to let Nnamdi go when he could probably be signed for around $12 per? I don’t get it.

    =======================
Yeah, he was a sure tackler when Willis Maghee shoved him out of the way en route to a TD.

start Stevie Brown. Michigan players ARE FOOTBALL, period. Eugene shouldnt be on the field, period. get your Rahim Moore scouting report ready…

  79. Chris in NY Says:

Roughly, these guys are going to make:
    - Routt $10 mil
    - Wimbley $9 mil
    - Eugene $2 mil

but wouldn’t this make more sense:
    - Nnamdi $12 mil
    - Huff $5 mil
    - Wimbley $4 mil

Those guys were, along with Seymour and Kelly, our best defensive players this year. And we’re probably only keeping one of them while throwing silly money at some other guys? Nope. Don’t get it.

And don’t get on me for “what do you care? It’s not your money.” I know, I don’t care what they’re getting paid, I care that the team has finite financial resources and I fear that, salary cap or not, we’re going to let key players go while paying way over market value for others.

Huff has made it clear he loves all things Texas. If you think he would have signed in Oakland for anything less than Otagwe just got from Washington, then you’re not being realistic. Huff will be starting for the Cowboys next year.

Wimbley was a FA coming off year where his numbers rivaled the top DEs in the league. We got F’d over with the buy back clause being nulified. We couldn’t lose Wimbley at all. I can KINDA understand the franchise tag on him. Doubt it was expected to go down like that.

If Nnamdi would have taken 12 million a year, he’d still be here. Davis paid him more than that last year, so why would you think he wouldn’t have paid him 12?

A new era is on the verge of dawning at linebacker for the San Diego Chargers.

Stephen Cooper appears ready to move on for the first time in his eight-year NFL career, leaving an opening for last season’s third-round draft pick Donald Butler to move into the starting lineup.

“I think I’m going to have an opportunity to test the market,” Cooper told the San Diego Union-Tribune, seemingly confident that his time with Bolts has drawn to an end.

Butler, meanwhile, is coming off a torn Achilles tendon that sidelined him for his entire rookie season.

Still, the Chargers are “excited” to give the first-year player the opportunity to start in 2011.

  90. priesttj Says:

Jhill I hate to lose Huff and I mean hate to lose him, I think he was really becoming one of the very best FS in the game. He was making plays all over the field.

However I think it is time for Branch to take the baton and run with it I think he’s seen enough to hit the ground running and would make a top notch FS in a year or two.

This kid W McFadden entrigues me more than anyone else we have at corner I just think he has what it takes to be very good if allowed to play there game in game out I think his instincts for the game are outstanding he just got torched once and that happens to everyone. But the kid has something IMO.

They knew he wouldn’t accept his role as backup and they didn’t need the rambling mouth of his stirring up contentions through the media. As well as on game day. This team needs an established starter I think Campbell has done enough to be recognized as that starter. And lets roll from there.

USC running back D.J. Morgan has drawn quite a bit of praise from head coach Lane Kiffin. Kiffin had this to say about the Trojan tailback: “Been very encouraged by him, in the pass game and the run game. He looks very explosive, even though he’s not 100 percent yet. Very natural and smooth… And I hope it’s a great message to Dillon Baxter. Here’s somebody who didn’t get quite the (same) praise because of his injury, but he (Baxter) is going to have to work his tail off to start with that kid here.”

Morgan tore his ACL in high school and has done nothing but impress coaches while operating with the scout team. He may not see the field this year but he is certainly one to keep an eye on.

Seymour’s deal is a pair of one-year $15 million deals

Posted by Mike Florio on March 8, 2011, 5:00 PM EST

The Raiders last month gave defensive lineman Richard Seymour a two-year, $30 million contract. That part is accurate.

The deal widely was reported as having $22.5 million guaranteed. That part was less accurate.

Per a league source, only $15 million was fully guaranteed upon signing. That guarantee comes in the form of a guaranteed base salary of $15 million.

The other $7.5 million in guaranteed money is guaranteed for injury only. On the fifth day of the 2012 league year, the amount becomes fully guaranteed. The deal also carries a $7.5 million roster bonus that becomes guaranteed on the fifth day of the 2012 league year.

Thus, Seymour signed a one-year, $15 million deal, and he gave the Raiders an exclusive option on a second one-year, $15 million deal. He’ll get $22.5 million guaranteed only if he suffers a catastrophic injury in 2011.

  103. The Real MaddenRaider Says:

How is Boller better than Gradkowski as a backup? Al just wants Gradkowski out of there so there won’t be a viable replacement when Campbell stinks up the place, therefore the Raiders can make the argument that Campbell’s all they got. Hue era is off to a great start. The team is already getting worse. Simple math:

    Campbell/Gradkowski/Boller is better than Campbell/Boller/?? ??

  104. priesttj Says:

R8eray this is precisely what I meant with my earlier post these fans see the face value of these contracts and overreact when they don’t know the details within. Very few contracts are paid in full and i can gaurantee you that Routts is of a similar nature. Because Nnamdi himslef only recieved 70% of that huge contract he signed. But fans listen to the media and get overly excited about something they know very little about. These guys can be cut for a variety of reasons and never see half that money if they don’t perform. As we saw by the Russell contract. He missed out on roughly 7$mill due ot lack of performance.

That’s why I don’t get excited about these contracts and who got what because the langage of them can vary from player to player.

Like the Javon Walker signing? Like the DHB pick? Like giving D-Hall $8 mil for 8 games? And just to make clear I’m not picking on the Raiders, like Holmgren giving Delhomme tens of millions last year? Like the Redskins for throwing a mountain of cash at a very talented but unmotivated Haynesworth. Or like a thousand other poor moves made by GMs.

You can judge what these guys are roughly worth when you look around the league at comparable players. Routt is now getting paid like a top 4 or 5 CB. Wimbley is making top 5 LB money, at least for 2011. And the whole reason for Revis’ holdout last year is that he wanted Nnamdi money, but Nnamdi was getting paid so far out of line with what other CBs make.

I suppose they do know who they want to keep and who they want to let walk, that doesn’t mean I have to agree with it and it definitely doesn’t mean they’re making the right moves.

As far as the year Al Davis gave all that money to several athletes I never saw him do that before or since sure he’ll make a big slash or two but that was an aboration IMO. He was trying to make it work with that kid and saw the error in it. Fired him and got rid of the players who couldn’t play.
