A Raiders’ reminder about the days of 3-4 defense

Are the Raiders thinking of utilizing some 3-4 defense this year, an alignment they haven’t utlized as a base defense since returning to Oakland in 1995?

Considering the way they’ve loaded up defensive linemen _ re-signing Richard Seymour and John Henderson to team with Tommy Kelly, along with the development of Lemarr Houston, Matt Shaughnessy and Desmond Bryant _ it seems unlikely.

Yet here is a history lesson about the days when 3-4 defenses helped pave the way to three Super Bowl wins, posted today on Raiders.com.

“Using all forms of defense, these powerful, determined, intimidating football teams contributed to the Decades of Dominance, during which the Raiders have won an AFL Championship, four American Football Conference Championships, three World Championships of Professional Football, participated in five Super Bowls, played in 14 Championship Games, won or tied for 17 Division Championships, had 21 playoff seasons, finished 34 seasons at .500 or better and played in 40 postseason games.”

Nobody does nostalgia like the Raiders.

The NFL owners are expected to make one final proposal to the union on Friday.
With pro-union Judge David Doty looming, the Players Association now appears to be in the driver’s seat. A deal remains highly unlikely unless the owners provide more detailed financial data to go with a near 50-50 split of revenue. If that doesn’t happen, the best we can hope for is a third extension of the negotiating window. The union has until 5:00 p.m. to decertify.

Brandon Marshall tied with Wes Welker, Steve Johnson, and Pierre Garcon for the most drops in the NFL (13) last season.
Opposing defenses intercepted seven passes intended for Marshall, tied for fifth-most in the NFL. He also ranked just 93rd out of 110 in yards after catch, dropping from 5.0 in 2009 to 2.7 in 2010. Fantasy leaguers can give Marshall a pass for the late-season hamstring injury and Chad Henne’s red-zone ineptitude, but it’s clear that his own play slipped as well.

I don’t mind the occasional drop, as long as you make plays. (Perfect example)Jordy Nelson had a few drops in the SB, but definitely came through w/ some tough catches as well.

    DMAC,

the soph’s had a few drops & fumbles last year – so did Jacoby Ford

it just hurts worse when you’re the Raiders because:

#1 how often do you get a good play call?
#2 how often are the WR’s open?
#3 how often does the O-Line give our QB time to throw an accurate ball?

  • RaiderRockstar

    BBL gentzzz!

  • Just Win Baby

I agree. DHB would have to actually get open and have the ball thrown in his direction to achieve 13 drops. I wonder what the ratio of drops/times targeted is. How many TDs per drop did Welker score vs. DHB?

If the players decertify and seek litigation, what exactly will they sue the league for?

Apparently, it will be an antitrust lawsuit. However, after reading up on antitrust I’m still confused as to how the NFLPA will claim the NFL violated these laws.

MB, the president made this earthquake happen, right?

  • http://www.aldavissucks.blogspot.com The Real MaddenRaider

MB, no earthquakes, tsunamis, or any seismic activity when Bush was president. Suddenly prez O takes over, and now this. Right?

  • http://www.aldavissucks.blogspot.com The Real MaddenRaider

When MB woke up this morning, he was hoping it was a terrorist attack. When he saw that it was a natural disaster, he puked a little in his mouth. Just disgusted him. Thought he had his big catastrophe he was hoping for, that he could pin on the president. Now his plan is to find a way to blame this earthquake on the president. Watch. Wait till he gets here.

  • http://www.aldavissucks.blogspot.com The Real MaddenRaider

Come on, MB. You’re out there. How did the president cause this earthquake? How did he make that tsunami wave get so big? Come on, you know you’ve got a theory. You’re probably hitting all the right wing talking point sites as I type this, trying to put something together.

We just might lose ZackMiller after all, I think he wants to go elsewhere. I think I would like to have Zack and Bush back as well as Nnamdi if we could get hose 3 back I’d be very happy.

    ====================================================

Zach’s a fine TE, but I don’t think another team will give up a 1st and a 3rd for him. And if so, that’s a pretty good “trade” for the Raiders.

Nnamdi won’t be signing until he gets a look at just what other teams are willing to throw at him.

  • http://www.aldavissucks.blogspot.com The Real MaddenRaider

That goes for the rest of you tea baggers, too. The blame O for everything sect. All of you. You know who you are. VegasRaider, RaiderRockStar. Come on. Let’s hear it. Bible thumpers should have their tongues ripped out, and Rockstar’s comment at 9:35 is the reason why. Someone has a relative diagnosed with cancer, and rockstar tells him that he’ll go to hell if he doesn’t convert to HIS religion. It doesn’t get lower, folks. It just doesn’t get lower.

The OLB/DE I would like to see the Raiders also target with that Round 2 pick is Brooks Reed from Zona

My top 3 players the Raiders should target in Round 2:

    1.RT/G Marcus Cannon
    2.C/G Stefan Wisnewski
    3.OLB/DE Brooks Reed

  • Just Fire Baby

I just looked at Walter Football’s top OLB prospects, and a bunch of these guys were listed as 235 and under.

I don’t want anything to do with those types of LB’s.

Seems like Clay Matthews had a pretty pedestrian pro-day, is still predicted to be in the round 3-5 range, and read a couple reports that he is ABSOLUTELY an ILB, and will not play on the outside in the NFL (not athletic enough).

For my liking, the LB I liked the most was that McCarthy kid from the U. Great instincts, but he is also listed as an ILB.

I look at these OLB’s, and I think to myself, “I watched these teams play (The OSU, Miss ST, UCLA, Wash, etc..) and don’t remember any wow moments from any OLB’s.”

Green Bay gets a SB and a Gov that takes on thug unions that are a extension of the Dem party. Those 14 Dems that abandoned their jobs should be fired without pay. GB is on the upswing!

  • http://www.aldavissucks.blogspot.com The Real MaddenRaider

MB, can you believe what the president did, with this earthquake? Let’s start a movement to impeach him! Starting earthquakes and tsunamis is where I draw the line.

  • Mistabr0wn

Its only a matter of time before some libtard environmentalist blames that quake/tsunami on global warming. We can then create a govt prog costing billions to save the earth from quakes.

  • DKnight007

Brooks Reed would be a great pick for the Raiders in Round 2.

He is a BEAST at 6’3, 264. Can play any of the OLB positions and rush the passer, cover or play in space and play against the run and defend and out his hand down as a nickel rusher to get to the QB also. He is Athletic and versatile and has good football instincts and a high motor.

  • Mistabr0wn

Pres O cant create anything he’s a derelict buffoon, nice try!

  • http://www.aldavissucks.blogspot.com The Real MaddenRaider

Yeah, Wisconsin’s on the upswing. That’s why riots are about to take place in Madison. All Governor Walker did was divide the state, for the benefit of big corporations. And with the recall coming, it will be him who gets fired with no pay. He’s done. If this governor got out of his car without his security detail, he’d be dead. That’s not progress.

  • http://www.aldavissucks.blogspot.com The Real MaddenRaider

MB, you don’t blame the president for this quake? You blame him for everything else. You blame him for a financial crisis that started before he even won the election! There’s clearly nothing you don’t blame him for, so I would have to assume you’d blame him for this earthquake, too. It’s his fault, isn’t it? Didn’t he start the tsunami wave with his Kenyan superpowers?

  • Mistabr0wn

GB has a GOV willing to balance a budget despite democrats and the unions (dem) standing in the way.

Big props to Walker and GB, enjoy that SB trophy and prosperity!

  • http://www.aldavissucks.blogspot.com The Real MaddenRaider

I got 17 of the 20 questions right, although I might have went about 30 seconds over the time limit.

Got the last one wrong (Lol), and got #17 and #18 wrong.

Nailed the math ones without pen, paper or a calculator.

    17 = 42.5 wonderlic

I’m telling you, I use to protcor different types of wonderlic tests. To literally get a sub 10 score, you have to either not be bright enough to understand there is a time limit and just have to move on if you don’t know the answer, or you are answering questions wrong intentionally.

    I think I could have got a 35 on a Wonderlic test when I was 12.

  • Just Fire Baby

BTW, I believe DHB got a 8 on his Wonderlic.

That is incredibly difficult to do. It actually may be more difficult to score an 8 on a Wonderlic than run a 4.3 forty.

  • RaiderRockstar

    MR,

why do you keep bringing up the Green Bay Packers?

are you a fan, just because they won the Super Bowl?

weren’t you just saying yesterday that they are SB Champs because the fans own the team?

I swear you were giving GM Ron Wolf (1991-2001) all the credit for turning them into a juggernaut just yesterday!

Should the other 31 teams with owners just throw in the towel, because they can’t compete ???

    Also, BTW.

You are supposed to multiple your correct answers by 2.5 .

If you somehow come up with 34 (not divisible by 2.5) than I think you failed the test.
