Gallery takes the high road

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Wednesday, March 9th, 2011 at 7:50 am in Oakland Raiders.

Robert Gallery spoke fondly of his time with the Raiders and declined to address the club’s unusual tactic of publicly discussing his contract issue.

At the Ed Block Courage Award dinner in Baltimore, Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post caught with Gallery, who had no reaction to the club breaking its long-held policy of not discussing contract matters in regard to his departure.

“What was mutually agreed upon were his numbers he wanted, and his agent wanted, were way out of line,” Herrera said. “He was asking for too much money. “He wanted $8 million; we were at $2.5 million. It was just way out of line with what we thought was reasonable.”

Said Gallery: “My parents always told me to be professional, be classy and tell the truth,” Gallery said. “What he chose to say is his business, and I really don’t have any comment on what he said. I’ve always told the truth.”

Gallery emphasized he “loved playing for Mr. Davis” but that “they’re moving in a different direction.”

Before last Thursday’s deadline, the Raiders signed Daniel Loper to a two-year contract which pays him $1.9 million this year. Loper started four games Gallery missed due to injury in 2010. He could end up being a starter unless the Raiders either land a starter in the draft. Bruce Campbell, a fourth-round pick a year ago who played exclusively at right guard, will be given every opportunity to win a starting job in training camp, pending resolution of a collective bargaining agreement.

MR — Does it really bother you so, that I can write better than you…even though I didn’t spend the $599 ($499 with coupon) for screenwriting lessons??

How many classes must I have taken, and how many degrees must I have, before you are completely humiliated the way you need to be? I’ve graduated from more classes than you’ve ever dreamt of…and unlike you, I continue to strive for higher learning.

I’m hungry now, and you’re not ruining my appetite like you’ve ruined your outlook on life, MR.

Despite your life of negative energy…

I remain in a great mood.

And it’s STILL a great day to be a Raiders fan! Isn’t it?!

  • priesttj

See what I mean, 32 teams and NO ONE will pay them what they got………….lol these guys are a joke!!

  • http://www.aldavissucks.blogspot.com The Real MaddenRaider

priest, was I wrong about the team being worse since season’s end? We are. QB depth chart is worse. Gradkowski is better backup than Boller. Period. Indisputable. Line is worse without Gallery. Team just threw Gallery under the bus, for no reason at all. Signs of more chaos and dysfunction. A great end to a season, and it’s almost all been nullified now. Instead of building on a much improved team, they’re chipping away at it.

    Head coach: gone.

Arguably the best backup QB in the game: gone

Offensive lineman pivotal in the Raiders’ new found run attack: gone

overall spirit following huge season finale win: gone, the minute Cable was fired. Immediate backlash from players, locker room split.

  • priesttj

Lefty12 OK fine I just don’t feel that strongly about it either way. I couldn’t care less because I don’t know the facts.

  • Albinator

Herrera is the ultimate lap dog. Can someone please start a “Fire John Herrera” website?

  • DMAC

Who the FK cares, what AL said. What Herrera said. What Gallery said. What the whole organization says. Gallery is ready to move on and that’s just fine. So is Al. End of story.

  • lefty12

Anyone who believes Routt would not have gotten a big contract somewhere, either here or elsewhere, isn’t being realistic.Of course that would include most people on here.

  • Albinator

    Amen DMAC!

Hayes, I never said I could write better than anyone. I just wanted to know what your explanation of “journalism 101″ was. Wanted to know if you’ve ever taken a course in journalism. Since you obviously haven’t (judging by your response to those questions), now I’m just wondering why you’d hold professional journalists to a standard that you call “journalism 101″ when you have not the slightest clue as to what it is yourself. That’s all I was saying Hayes. Enjoy your hot lunch date (wink).

  • priesttj

It’s a matter of personal opinion of which we differ greatly. nuff said!!

  • DMAC

    Pretty much.

RealMaddenRaider,…I’ve been on this blog 3 times. And each and every time you’re always wining about what you did or didn’t say. You are the most annoying mo’fo on this blog. Go become a 9er fan or someting.

Report: Owners, players agree on rookie scale

Yahoo Sports’ Jason Cole reports that the NFL and NFLPA have agreed on a “basic” compromise that would install a rookie wage scale to replace the current rookie salary cap.
The current “rookie cap” is totally ineffective. The wage scale would require teams to sign players to only three-year deals if they’re drafted after the first round. First rounders would get four-year contracts, but the monetary commitment would be much less. For instance, the owners proposed a $3.8 million-per-year max contract for the No. 1 overall pick. Top pick contracts will be quite a bit more once the players union has its say, but it still sounds like the deals will be a far cry from Sam Bradford’s $13 million-a-year blockbuster signed last year. Looks like the Jamarcus Russell rule to me.

What we’ve learned so far today:

HayesDaze isn’t happy with the journalistic standards of the sports media. We also learned he has no idea what journalistic standards are.

DMAC doesn’t want us to discuss our team’s owner publicly trashing a former player for no reason.

Albitor has only been to this blog 3 times, yet he knows me like we’re next door neighbors.

    It’s been enlightening, boys.

  • lefty12

Priest,I know it isn’t a big deal.It is just another example that makes the organization look petty and dysfunctional-unnecessary.The double standard bothers me.Davis talked about how Cable made the organization look bad with the Hanson incident and his history of slapping his wife yet this makes the organization look just as bad.Hypocrisy and double standards-2 things I can’t stand.

  • lefty12

OK,I’m done venting. You all can go back discussing your wish lists, which BTW,will probably never happen and you can come back in 2 or 3 years and say you knew we should have taken so and so with our 1st pick in the 2nd rd.

  • http://www.aldavissucks.blogspot.com The Real MaddenRaider

Lefty, I’m starting to like you. You’ve becoming a bona-fied Al basher. Welcome to the good guys.

  • priesttj

Lefty12 getting the organization sued and talking about a specific contract is a bad analogy. Cable didn’t say anything he just created way too much turmoil socking assistant coaches and slapping women. Is comparing a MOUNTAIN to a molehill. Listen I agree it would have been better not said but aren’t getting a little too nitpikky. I would compare not paying Cable his money to that before I would this stuff.

    Listen it’s a non-issue as far as I’m concerned.

  • BadMoodGuy

Apparently not all of the media thought it was an ‘unusual tactic of publicly discussing his contract issue’, because they thought it was off the record. So is off the record = public discussion when it is the Raiders?

BAN THE TROLLS or at least make them stick to one made up persona per month.

my impression of a RealMaddenRaider response to RealMadden Raider:

“I never said I knew you like a next door neighbor. What I said was you’re always wining and getting caught up with the stupid symantics of other’s posts rather than talking football”

Look at yourself. You’ve annoyed the sh*t out of three of us. You think that’s by coincedence?

Go play your X-box or start your fantasy mock draft or something. Leave this blog to men talking football and bringing quality smacktalk. Your sniveling is SO f*cking annoying.

For the sake of the rest of the group, this is the last time I will address you.

  • http://www.aldavissucks.blogspot.com The Real MaddenRaider

Wow. Hear that, guys? This is a blog where MEN, MEN, I tell you, talk FOOTBALL! MEN talk FOOTBALL here! MEN like ALBINATOR! He’s a MAN, man!

    Gotta agree here.

Normally I think your a lot of hog wash and just like to stir the pot, a ‘dont rock the boat, sink it’ kind of guy.

But in the midst of your confused babble and ramblings, seeing the locker room split is not good. And instead of building on a semi successful season (which by the way this could of been the year) they dismantle it, and thats not good.

But hey, Al knows what he’s doing, OK?

  • http://www.aldavissucks.blogspot.com The Real MaddenRaider

The Raiders were classless for publicly throwing Gallery under the bus. No hair splitting op ed in the Chron, that tries to play devil’s advocate and invoke the possibility of the Raiders being duped into thinking they were off the record, is going to change that. It’s called the media age. Ask Jerry Jones. Once your views go public, you’re never getting them back.

  • priesttj

Now you know why the Raiders take the stance they do with the media. Take this example a file it.

  • Al Davis MachoMachoSupremo

    #124

Since when are the Raiders a class act. Doesn’t fit the Raider image. All just part of the M.O. People have to know Al is not afraid to throw anyone under the bus. Thats how people take advantage of you, when theyu know your soft. So don’t mess with Al. Al does’t care about class, he just wants rings.

    Just win baby!

    Commitment to Excellence

And the new slogan: Whatever it takes.

  • http://www.aldavissucks.blogspot.com The Real MaddenRaider

Ooh, ok. Al’s not “soft”. Got it. His football team still sucks and he’s crazy.

    ———————————————–
Your missing the point. You do not mess with Al. He was probably offended by Gallerys request for 8 mil, pissed him off, so they counter offer with peanuts. Now if Gallery says 6 mil, he probably get 3.5, maybe 4. But our oline was bad, so Al just wants to start over. That simple.

  • DutchRaider77

    Two Cents:
Gallery was our best O-Lineman, but not worth $8M a year (big reason is the injuries in the last two years, missed 14 games.) Of Couse the Raiders never seem to handle disputes well. Gallery made it sound like the Raiders did not want to resign him:

“With the end of the league year coming today, and the few conversations I’ve had with the Raiders and Mr. Davis, we’ve come to a mutual agreement that it’s time for me to move on with my career,”

But the Raiders did want to resign him, but not to the contract he wanted.

Do you guys really think another team is going to give him $8M a year?

Or do you think that a team may give him what the Raiders were offering?

If the Raiders took the high road and said nothing and Gallery signed with the Seachickens for $2.5M a year, do you think the Raiders would not have gotten blasted by the fans and experts for not resigning Gallery?

  • http://www.aldavissucks.blogspot.com The Real MaddenRaider

Ok, I won’t mess with Al. His football team still sucks, and it’s because he’s crazy. But I won’t mess with him. That’s a promise. OK?

  • Harder2000

No matter how anyone describes Big Al, all must agree that he has never hesitated to pay the players he wants to stay – Big time! This means that Gallery either did something to piss Al off, or Al just doesnt think he was a differencemaker worthy of being kept.. Thats just what it is, all we can do is speculate on the reason, no one knows besides AL!

One thing is for sure though, Big Al will do all he can to win, spend all the dollars he can, do whatever he believes it takes, and only time will tell if his major plan will play out to Raidernations advantage, or if we will have another mediocre or bad season!

Even if some disagrees with the moves, as i do with a couple, there is a larger picture, and evaluating the sum of moves is best done when the season is about to begin and we can see what we got and what we lost – a lot can happen between now and next season!

  • DutchRaider77

Logan Makins is a pretty good guard, right? (Two time Pro Bowler and also a LG) Better than Gallery?

The Patriots were only willing to give him $3.26M tender last year and when he refused to sign it lowered it 110% of his starting salary to $1.54M.

The Patriots are seen as the class act? Is this how you treat your Pro Bowlers?

  • Harder2000

RMR, look, you cant argue with Big Als commitment to win, thats just pointless – he will do everything he thinks will help the Raiders back to glory!
You can be a critic of the choices he makes, the direction he chooses and the players and staff he decides to keep or bring in – as is why the majority of Raidernation would likely prefer a real GM was brought in.. But no matter what, Big Al runs this team and will until (if) he retires, and being a part of Raidernation is being a part of a team that is led by Old time great Big AL, whether you like it or not..

  • priesttj

Sooooo why do youu spend sooooo much time in here talking about it…………a little sick don’t you think?

  • http://www.aldavissucks.blogspot.com The Real MaddenRaider

Dutch, I agree. The Patriots are classless, too. But because Al is such an a – hole, he gets the spotlight on him. The solution is for Al to finally shut his mouth and retire already, then the shannanigans of teams like the Patriots will move more into focus by default.

  • http://www.aldavissucks.blogspot.com The Real MaddenRaider

Oooh, ok. I can’t argue with Big Al’s commitment to win. Got it. But I can still say that his teams suck every year, so he should probably retire. I can say that, I think. Yes, I think so.

  • http://www.aldavissucks.blogspot.com The Real MaddenRaider

Why do you spend so much time here, priest?

I actually LIKE the team, and I don’t spend 1/10 of the time you do. Isn’t there anything else in your life worth your time? well go do it….

  • http://www.aldavissucks.blogspot.com The Real MaddenRaider

I like the team, too. Thats why I want Al to leave, so the team will improve! Get it?

  • RaiderRockstar

    DMAC,

is Hiram “stiff armed” Eugene worth 4-years at 10+ million for his special teams play alone?

I’ll take Sam Williams for 1-year 700k again!

  • RaiderRockstar

I’ll bet you Rock Cartwright is our special teams captain in 2011 and he’s only scheduled to make 800k in 2011!

  • priesttj

Well the coaches disagree so DEAL WITH IT!!

  • Dakota

Al Davis wants to win, he just can’t anymore. No other GM would be allowed to have such a putrid run at managing a team. You can say players and coaches let him down, but he hand picked all of those players and almost all of those coaches. His time as a successful GM has passed…he could still be a great owner, but his self pride will not allow him to let go of control enough to get a 21st century mind into the organization.

Al Davis would rather be in control and lose year in and year out than see a 3rd party come in and have success where he failed for so many years.

He pisses me off for what he is doing and has done to this team over the past many years, but I love the fact that he isn’t one of those pathetic owners who only puts a little bit of effort and money into winning. We all know he genuinely wants to win and spends more than any other owner…..too bad he is the guy making the decisions on where those assets are utilized.

Can you imagine it? A good GM, who would be allowed to pick a coach and then work with the coach to hire the proper assistants to run the coach’s system and then allow the GM and coach to select the players who fit that system….and then backed up by an owner who is willing to spend what it takes to win? Imagine the possibilities! Of course it would be no guarantee to success….but I would take my chances with that over what we have been witnessing with the Raiders for so long now.

Al gave us a glimpse of that possibility with Gruden and Allen, but he submarined it and we have not seen anything close to that kind of set up since then, and I doubt we ever will until Al is gone.

Hopefully Mark is smart enough to spend the money necessary to win, and yet allow a GM to make the calls on most decisions.

Gallery may find that other teams aren’t wiling to give any more than the Raiders. AD should just have told Gallery to go out and see what other teams are offering him and to come back and see if the Raiders will match or top it by a little.

  • priesttj

Dakota there’s one BIG difference this GM is also the owner if you guys don’t like it no one is holding you hostage. There plenty teams with GM’s that you can root for if you need a GM.

    HE’S THE OWNER………..get over it!!
