Players remain away from facility
By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Tuesday, April 26th, 2011 at 11:12 am in Oakland Raiders.
There was no sign of any Raiders players between 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. today, just a light stream of administrative employees and scouts arriving to prepare for the draft.
Considering word had probably gotten out through various Twitter posts and text messages that teams were not opening their weight rooms, there was no reason to arrive other than to establish attendance with regard to a workout bonus.
A pretty boring way to spend two hours, but at least it was a nice day . . .

Van Dyke or Chekwa in the 3rd or 4th? Now THAT is reaching. Neither of those guys are good at all. If you think Dowling won’t be able to hold up in man coverage in the NFL, I don’t know why you’d think Van Dyke would be able to.
Curtis Brown, Davon House, and Brandon Harris will be there if Dowling isn’t. Curtis Brown is probably one of the better man corners in this draft. Like him a lot. A bunch of scouts do, too. Apparently the Raiders had him in for a workout.
Still, I’m hoping the run on QBs means Ben Ijalana will be available.
/////////////////////////////////////////////
I think that Dowling is more cut out for a zone scheme than the straight up man coverage that we play because he is really stiff and doesnt have the speed or the hips to consistently turn and run with NFL WR’s. Van Dyke and Chekwa both offer special teams value and could play the smaller slot receivers that are popular in the NFL now. Both are tall thin guys, Chekwa is a little bigger and more physical than Van Dayke, and both have the length and leaping ability to go up for jump balls. Speed is a premium at corner and bot have it in abundance. Chekwa is the better prospect at this point, but i think with the proper technique taught to him Van Dyke can be a very good player. 3rd is probably too high for both but a mid fourth for Chekwa seems right on time and i wouldnt mind a gamble on van Dyke there either. Curtis Brown would be the perfect fit at corner for us but he will be gone by the time we pick.
Ben Ijalan would be availabe even without the run on QB’s IMO. He lacks killer instinct and and seems like he gets lost on the field at times. is very strong and powerful but doenst always work with the proper pad level and allows guys to get under him. Doesnt have great technique or instincts either. Plus he played at Villanova, which doesnt exactly offer top notch competition. Id trade back in the second a pick up an extra pick or 2 if he was gonna be the pick. I still prefer Gilbert over most tackles in this draft, i also like Sherrod.

Hey, Jerry, it’s been a whole 3 minutes since your last update. Come on, give us our fix!
April 26th, 2011 at 11:21 am
I see Al trading out of #48, and going up to #28 with the Pats, and taking a QB (Kappy or Locker).
I think he will have to give up the 2nd next year, and maybe a 4th or 5th this year.
Please don’t take Jimmy Smith. My territory manager has lived in Denver 25 years and is a CU alum, and he says Jimmy Smith has been coddled and helped by so many people in that community since he was about 15, and yet he still gets in a ton of trouble about every year, with people trying to help him, and cover up his issues.
As soon as Jimmy gets paid, all those people that have tried to help him will get pushed aside.
Think Aqib Talib, only possibly worse.
April 26th, 2011 at 11:21 am
Shareece Wright seems like he could also be a pick and i thought that he would be projected as a second for sure cuz i watched him play this past year and he can ball. It looks like he is projected as a mid rounder and i would love to pick him up.
April 26th, 2011 at 11:23 am
playoffs shouldn’t be the goal. that’s what got cable fired. he had the team focused on division wins. we need to aim for super bowl and to do that we have to beat colts, jets, patriots etc. can we do that with a mediocre run defense? yes. can we do that with mediocre pass offense? not likely. simple as that to me. it’s a pretty loud trend in the nfl. passing = titles

The Raiders definitely need more offensive firepower. A second pass-catching TE will help Hue stretch the field horizontally. He loves those multiple TE sets.
I don’t think there will be a WR drafted high, but I also don’t see the Raiders will be bringing in any veterans. I just think that Greg Little will be able to step in immediately and pay huge dividends for the offense. He won’t be some “project” guy who needs extra attention like DHB does. IF he’s there at #48 – and with his stock rising, that’s becoming a big if – it could be a home-run pick at a tremendous value.
^^^^^^^^
I agree. If Greg Little is their for the Raiders to pick at #48 (which I doubt he will be) they should take him and then draft O-Line in Round 3, then OLB or TE in Round 4, then CB or S Mana Silva in Round 5. Then get a DT, or another CB in Round 6.
April 26th, 2011 at 11:24 am
I think Dowling has enough skill to play in any system. Personally, I like Curtis Brown more and I think he’d be a “safer” pick for the Raiders (and he’ll definitely be there at #48), but Dowling has more upside.
I don’t see any football skill with Van Dyke. Might be a special teams guy, but outside of that I think any higher than the 6th round would be a terrible pick.
Chewkwa I like more than Van Dyke, would be a decent enough 4th or 5th rounder (although again, I think better players will be available), but I think he’s a little too stiff to man up against slot guys.
Ijalana I like because he can immediately help at guard, but also has the skills to play RT. I think the Raiders need a guy versatile enough to help them at a variety of positions because they’re going to have a lot of holes along the line once free agency starts.
Along those lines, Clint Boling could be an option as well. A bit of a sleeper pick, but from what I’ve read he’s climbing draft boards. Might be there in the third, but I wouldn’t exactly mind him in the 2nd either.
I think Gilbert will be there in the 3rd. Sherrod is an interesting prospect as well. I also like James Carpenter.

He won’t fall to the Raiders in Round 4. No way.

Important note on our #48th selection;
last year we drafted Mr. L. Houston at #44 position.
as noted by Jerry we drafted Howie at #48 a few years back.
we also got Zach and Wiz around this point in the draft as well.

What do you think of Bo Scaife as a possible signing. He was in Fischer’s doghouse last year, deactivated for a couple games(?).
————-
Scaife might not be bad, although he’s no spring chicken.
I like Matt Spaeth, but he’s more of a blocker. Has decent enough hands, though.
I think this year’s TE class is underrated. There are going to be some solid contributors available in the middle rounds. Julius Thomas, Rob Housler, Jordan Cameron and Zack Pianalto will be options for the Raiders.
April 26th, 2011 at 11:29 am
Can’t imagine a team using anything higher than a 6th round pick on Marcus Cannon right now.
He was a possible 2nd rounder, but probably a 3rd rounder. After chemo he will probably lose over 30 pounds and be very weak for awhile, and I can’t see him being anywhere close to ready week 1 of the season.
It will be a Mike Bush like situation (team drafts him and IR’s him for his rookie year) only Bush was a much higher regarded prospect before the injury, and he fell to the 4th round.
April 26th, 2011 at 11:32 am
if Little, Wisniewski, Cannon, Rudolph, or Ingram isn’t there at #48 then another player of the top 50 is!
after the sure 5 (peterson, dareus, jones, green, and miller [aka gallery, leaf and other sure thing busts]), I do not see any canyons of talent between the other 45 or so players.
those that have talent have off the field issues (mallett), motivational shortcomings (j. smith, fairly), injuries (paea, bowers, dowling), hell 1/2 the UNC players didn’t play last year.

Haha I was going to ask… I like Myers, but he struggled to step up when Miller was injured. Better hands than I think anyone expected him to have, but he’s really better suited to special teams. And considering that the Raiders went through most of the season with only two TEs on the roster, they could use help at the position. Especially with a weak/developing WR corps.
Two and three-TE sets are becoming a lot more common in the NFL. The Ravens and Patriots run a lot of looks like that with great success. Given that the Raiders have had a lot of TEs in for visits, I think they’re looking at moving in that direction.

Would it be better to trade a pick from next year for a high 2nd round pick this year? So we had two 2nd round picks this year?
We could trade next year’s 2nd round pick and next year’s 3rd round pick for additional #2 pick? Seems like our draft board experts (a talent or info I do not possess)like a lot of guys who could fall to the 2nd round?

Maybe.
Cable paid lip service to it the whole time he was boss and we rarely if ever saw it.
Maybe it was being saddled with Tony Stewart and or the under producing Brondon Myers as options but he talked about it lots in pre and never happened.
We did see more “jumbo” packs and over loads with an extra tackle including ones where Z Miller lined up at “right tackle” with Walker and Khalif stacked left.
Barnes caught a TD pass lined up stacked over the tackle even.
I know we’ve devasted some of the smaller quicker Ds when we’ve added that extra lineman and looking forward to seeing it more in 2011…if there is a season.

More so than off the field issues, I worry about Mallet physically.

He is a legit 6′7 and extremely unmobile, so he will get hit hard and hit often.
At best he will be a more oft-injured version of Drew Bledsoe.

HueJack just said the draft is about need.
***
Kell, we NEED to fix the passing offense!
obviously Campbell, McFadden, Bush, Reece, DHB, Murphy, Ford & Zmiller aren’t going anywhere.
best bet would be to get a solid QB since JCamp got benched by Hue Jax 3 times last year and he’s was banged up a few times, too. Last year of his contract as well. I do NOT want Boller or Frye at QB for any length of time and I don’t think we should saddle HJ with a rookie QB next year when most HC’s in Oakland only last 2 seasons. Give a Top 50 QB a year with Jackson & Saunders to learn the system and hopefully Jason Campbell plays well enough & stays healthy enough that the kid isn’t rushed onto the field
if Camp turns in his best season, re-sign him and have 2 talented players at QB!
Plan be would be to upgrade everybody else around Campbell. I’m not convinced adding ROOKIES to protect our “franchise QB” is the way to go and we already have enough youngsters at WR. We need a veteran possession WR to move the chains. Somebody that isn’t made of glass
In the event some whacked out scenario like 5-7 QB’s get picked before the Raiders are on the clock at #48, I say trade the pick to Philly for Kevin Kolb and sign a big named malcontent free agent like Owens or Burress
Hue Jackson can handle it …

He broke his wrist in the bowl game making a big play down field. I just hope he puts more muscle on his frame. A little light in the @$$. : )
/////////////////////////////////////////////
i agree but he can ball and he is not as small as people make him seem, 5′11″ 190lbs is pretty nice size, i guess he ould stand to add another 10lbs. The guy has great speed, great flip in his hips and good feet to help in changing direction, makes nice break on the ball, good leaping ability and long arms, and is very confident.
—————————————————
I can’t argue that. I would be happy if he was there for us. He works hard and he seems to have his head on straight and let me tell you that is harder to do then you may think in Columbus, OH. They worship their players and Buckeye football no joke!

It does not matter now fellas Cable is gone. Old product, history!!! it was not the games that he won that hurt him. It was the games aginst non-division teams that we should have beat that hurt him.
Al stayed loyal to the guys through his issues but they had a replacement and it was his time. Cable’s offensive play calling you have to admit was pretty lame. Hue came in and made improvments and I have a feeling he is going to take this offense to a new level of play.

Not sure this is a great idea. Ocho may be on the decline and it would probably cost alot of money. Money that could be spent to secure Aso…

Cable was in essence “fired” when Al interviewed and ultimately hired Hue, but Al didn’t want to have to buy-out a year for Cable, so his cheap azz preferred to just sabotage 2010 by having all these splits and an owner/coach relationship that was toxic.
We could have went to the AFC championship game, and Al wouldn’t have retained Cable.

I don’t discount facts, Nnamdi. I discount obvious spin. Nobody gets fired for improving a team by 3 wins and getting them to .500 for the first time in nearly a decade. Cable was fired for his style of coaching, which ruffled Raiders’ management. That’s it. That’s a fact.
=======================
Yes you do.
Thats a fact.
Cable’s coaching style involved the failed ZBS. It also included assaulting fellow employees and letting your team get whipped by Miami 2nd and 3rd string Qbs and Wides.
Do you think your boss would have a conflict with you if this was your contribution to the organization?
Uuuuugh…

Cable was fired for personal reasons. Fired to make way for Hue? Hue is an unproven assistant! Listen to yourselves. Cable takes the team from 5-11 to 8-8, first .500 season in nearly a decade, and you’re saying the Raiders got rid of him to make way for a career assistant who’s never head coached anywhere? I can’t believe you guys can even say that with a straight face.
April 26th, 2011 at 12:13 pm
Steve Corkran: I have heard from other players that Mario turned down a one-year offer and that Walker is contemplating retirement. Therefore, the Raiders might be in the market for a right offensive tackle because Khalif Barnes isn’t coming back either.

Jerry got scooped by Corkran!!!
What are they paying you for Jerry??? That is some important stuff there, and I’m sure a smidge more important than La Russa’s daughter cheerleading for the Raiders next year.

Yep. I will be in Vegas this weekend from Friday thru Sunday also for the relaxing, clubs and betting. Should be good to see my first draft in Vegas also.
I like the OVER of 2.5 QB’s takem in Round 1! Locker is going in Round 1!
April 26th, 2011 at 12:16 pm
Young is gone, Palmer will retire if he’s not traded (and he won’t be traded until after the draft), Dolphins are heavily scouting QBs because they’re not sold on Henne, McNabb is done in Washington, Bills are hot for Ponder. Vikings, 49ers, and Cardinals will also be looking for a young signal caller.
6 QBs will be gone by #48. Of the “top 8″ (most of whom would be 2nd-tier, some even 3rd-tier in any other year), only Mallett and Stanzi will be left at #48. There’s an outside chance Kaepernick will, but again I think if the Titans haven’t already selected Locker in the 1st, they won’t let Kaepernick get past them in the 2nd.
Mallett would be a disaster for the Raiders, and Stanzi is just another guy. Not worth panicking at blowing the #48 pick on either of these guys.

I hope we stay at #48. The jury may still be out on the Seymour trade, but you have to give credit to Al for keeping our 2nd (Houston) last year and giving up our 1st this year. The fact that we finished 8-8 and wouldn’t have picked till #17 is gravy. Doesn’t look like a very good draft. After the first eight or nine prospects, everybody looks about the same to me. Plus all this talk about the Kaepernicks, Ponders and Daltons of the world being pushed up to the bottom of round one or top of round two makes life even better us.

Nnamdi, I shouldn’t respond to you because I don’t want to reward your childish behavior, so I’ll just make one last statement, at least to you, on this topic. Tom Cable took the team from 5-11 to 8-8 in only his second full season. NOBODY gets fired for that kind of performance. He was fired for personal reasons. The Raiders are extremely temperamental with coaches. They always have been. It’s a bizarre work environment and it’s rumored to be the worst environment in the league for coaches. Jon Gruden was shipped away when the Raiders were one of the best teams in football. He too was fired for personal reasons, similar to the reasons Cable was fired. They were both too forward. The Raiders like their coaches to simply be motivators and to work the system already provided by the Raiders, which is an outdated system.
Also, and as I said before, since when have the Raiders ever cared about violent employees? John Herrera accosted a journalist for crying out loud. As far as I know, he’s still with the team in good standing. If the Raiders cared about Cable attacking Hanson, he would have been fired at the time. At that time Cable was still in good standing with the team. Since then, Cable has been much more forward and commanding, and that’s why he was shipped away.

Cable was fired because he sucked, period end of story. 17-28 is terrible, claiming your not a loser when you barley made it to 500 is unacceptable. The o-line was an unmitigated disaster. cable had off the field issues as well ( allegedly) he needed to go. Hu jack is a major upgrade.
Look at it this way, under Hu jack many players in oakland, and in the nfl have flourished, grown and improved. Flacco, palmer ocho, macfadden and so on. Cable on the other hand has watched players regress and fade or simply plateau under his watch. gallery leveled off, every one else was abysmal/

Koolkell, what’s the problem with that? Is it any different than reading any quote from Bruce through this blog or the newspaper?

Grow up already man.

Did the Pat’s lose Richard Seymour for no compensation? Hell No.

It was stupid for Al to lose Nnamdi and get NADA in return. But I am sure some bloggers on here will spin that Al was a genius. As soon as Nnamdi signs with another team, some folks will be declaring Nnamdi had no talent.

Such a mistake making this guy the coach. Al should have had a better plan if he was so intent on firing Kiffin. JR, Henderson, Dmac, and several others got worse under this guy and the clowns he hired in 2009. And it had to be that dumbass staff’s idea to bring in Garcia, the guy that JR retired in 2008. At least he got it right with Hue. It just sucks that Cable was allowed to do so much damage in such a short period of time.
April 26th, 2011 at 2:06 pm
The Raiders felt Cable “sucked”, Mystic? After turning a 5-11 team to an 8-8 team in his second full year? Who knew the Raiders had such stringent standards. Surely the Raiders have won a couple of Super Bowls recently having a bar so high.

I doubt he falls halfway through the 3rd round to us, but I can see him being one of the first few guys taken in the 3rd round.
April 26th, 2011 at 2:10 pm
Regardless of whether the Raids draft a QB this year or not – they must bring in a better veteran backup.
Any QB they draft is not likely to be ready to play in 2011.
Boller and Frye is NOT the way to go.
Since JaJason sucks and will not make it through 2011 as the Raid starting QB, obtaining a capable backup will turn out to be the most important personnel move the Raids make in the next few weeks or months.
Vince Young, despite his mental instability is a proven winner and would be my first choice. VY is salvagable. Could be the next great Raider reclamation. This guy is going to make the Titans regret dumping him and QB starved teams are going to regret passing up the opportunity to claim him for nothing. Al would be insane not to give him a chance.
Colin Kaepernick would be a fine draft pick, but those of us in Reno who have watched his career will be quick to tell you he’s a poor man’s Vince Young.
Why not take a chance on VY since it doesn’t cost anything ?
Carson Palmer seems to be on his last legs. McNabb too.
Al Davis has said Gradkowski can play but can’t stay on the field.
Kolb stinks (watch the game against GB that he got injured in if you have any doubts) and if Philly cons any team into surrendering a first for him it’ll be a Brink’s robbery.
So, Al Davis would be insane NOT to bring VY in. Costs nothing and the potential upside is immense.
Do it, Al.
JaJason sucks.
April 26th, 2011 at 2:10 pm
I didn’t know they opened up those other towers at City Center.

I don’t doubt that Hue has a higher ceiling than Cable did, especially with his ability to call plays.
But he better at least go 8-8, and 5-1 in the division.
Cable gave him a team full of momentum.

Hu Jack played qb in college, and has a track record as a qb coach wr coach and coordinator. He and Jc will speak the same language, and we will see a great qb coach dynamic, lik we saw with reid / macnabb, or gruden /gannon.
Raiders football is in good shape heading to the 2011 season.
Book it.

Buffoonery.

In the Raiders’ system, Wiz would be a better fit at C than OG. I don’t think he’d be bad at OG, but he’d probably be average. At C he’d have more of a chance to use his best assets, which are his intelligence and quick hands.
Still, Satele was hit with a restricted FA tag, and three of the Raiders’ offensive tackles from last season won’t be back.
Personally, I’d love for the Raiders to find a way to get another 2nd or 3rd round pick, but I don’t think they have the ammunition to get that done.
April 26th, 2011 at 2:33 pm
A punter flipping it between his legs while on the ground!!!!!
How is that an acceptable plan???
April 26th, 2011 at 2:33 pm
Didn’t that happen in the season where Cable took over for Kiffin? It was embarrassing, but Cable had to do something to motivate that team. We’re not talking about a solid Raider football team playing for home field advantage. We’re talking about a franchise in the cellar that needed some kind of spark. I didn’t notice too many quirky calls like that from Cable thereafter.
April 26th, 2011 at 2:34 pm
Ideally? I’d like to see the Raiders get Wisniewski, Boling, and Curtis Brown in the late 2nd and early 3rd rounds.
April 26th, 2011 at 2:34 pm

April 26th, 2011 at 2:34 pm
VY has a long awkward delivery, but his arm strength is good. I’ve seen him throw some absolute darts. Don’t know why people think he has a weak arm.
Matt Leinart has a weak arm. Hard for me to believe Davis would still consider him after seeing some of those helium balls he threw at USC and Arizona.
VY costs NOTHING.
Give me a reason not to bring him in. I’ll bet Hue is salivating at the chance, and would work well with VY.
JaJason got alot of lip service from Hue and Al in the offseason, but don’t forget JaJason was shown the bench last season. Anyone that thinks Al and Hue are rock solid on JaJason is completely wrong. JaJason even got a call from Al asking him why the ball didn’t go downfield against the Colts. I’m telling you JaJason is on thin ice. And for good reason.
JaJason sucks.

That one was bad. But the Fargas sweep out of the endzone against Houston in 2009 that resulted in a safety may have been the worst play call in the history of football. I really like this kid Virgil Green TE from Nevada if we can get him in the 4th or 5th rnd. He and Kap were a good pair.
April 26th, 2011 at 2:53 pm
Campbell was shown the bench by a dumb coach who knew he was on his way out if he didn’t win big. He panicked and benched his satrting QB in the first 6 qrtrs of the season. Only a dumbell or someone trying to sabotage the operation does that. Sure you can sit the down because he’s struggling in a game but to bench him for the season was major league stupid. I feel it cost us a chance to go to the playoffs. Because it took him until late in the season to get a rythum with the rec’s as a result of that.
Cable didn’t deserve to be retained and I think for the most part he kne whe was toast when Hujack had the offense humming. If not for that offensive punch we go 5-11 again if Cable hadn’t screwed everything up from the beginning we go 9-7 or maybe even 11-5. The losses to the Cards and SF were unnecessary and purely due to the QB shuffle.
April 26th, 2011 at 2:55 pm
I’m not clear on this anymore, but I seem to recall that the Lechler between the legs lateral to Janikowski also came at a dumb moment, besides being crazy to execute.
In Cable’s defense, he did call a great fake punt against the Jets. Remember that one ? Condo direct snap to a LB, whose name escapes me now. Think he was from Stanford. Rumbled for a huge gain and Raids eventually win game in OT on a long Janikowski FG.
My memory of the sweep right against Houston that got stuffed for a safety is that I’ve never seen an offensive line so completely overpowered as the Raids were on that play. Fargas was dropped 5 yards deep.

Watching Locker in the Ore St. game and man he was very impressive especially outside the pocket. He can flat out throw on the run and he is extremely athletic. After watching Kaepernick earlier today and seeing Locker now I would have a very hard time pciking between the two. I would probably when all is said and done I’d take Locker because he has the quicker release.
I’m telling ya Locker and Kaepernick as well as Cam Newton are going to be damn near impossible to defense if they reach their potential. Locker and Kap have absolute guns I mean they have extremely strong arms and are more accurate on the run. All three have unlimited potential.

RaiderRet. There is no way that will happen no way on this earth. You might see 8 go in 4 rnds maybe 5. There is way too much talent on defense in this draft you’ll see 3 RB’s go between 20 and 40 and 6-8 Olineman before pick #50.
You can’t pick everyone in the top 45 picks. There are 5-6 WR’s that will go by the time we pick. These QB’s just aren’t talented enough, some will drop into the 4th rnd if you don’t believe just watch.

The Silver & Black will be trading down in the 2nd or 3rd round – watch for it!

The best spot to trade down and get more picks is in the 2nd Round usually. The Raiders did it last year and it worked to perfection and they got Houston.
They also did it when they traded down in Round 2 when they drafted Zach Miller.

Just depends on who is there for them in Round 2 and who is not there for them to trade down.
