9. Dallas: Smith; 10. Jacksonville: Gabbert; 11. Houston: Watt; 12. Minnesota: Ponder

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, April 28th, 2011 at 6:18 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Cowboys get USC tackle Tyron Smith, raising my average to .333 through the first nine picks.

(Hey, anyone remember I had the Raiders picking Rolando McClain last year? Anyone?)

Looked on TV as if Dallas was less enthuastic than most teams. Some actual perspective, perhaps? The whole, high-five, whoop-and-hollar thing seems a little ridiculous in draft rooms. All you did was turn in a card.

Jacksonville thought enough of Blaine Gabbert to move from No. 18 to No. 10 and give up its second-round pick in the process. The second-guessers will immediately wonder why they simply didn’t wait and possibly get Andy Dalton at No. 18.

Mike Mayock says Gabbert’s skill set compares favorably to Sam Bradford, last year’s No. 1 pick, but that his transition will be tougher because he played in a spread.

Seems to me Bradford played in a spread as well. Gabbert even invoked Bradford’s name at the combine as someone who made that transition.

Houston passing on Prince Amukamara with its incredibly porous pass defense in favor of Wisconsin defensive end J.J. Watt can only mean one thing _ the Titans are going to make a huge offer to Nnamdi Asomugha when free agency begins.

The Vikings and Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder . . . everyone who predicted quarterbacks would fly off the board deserves a pat on the back.

Colin Kaepernick, anyone?

These teams are nutz this year. You know most of these QBs are going to bust!

Damn just listen to what the annoucers just said …last time this many QBs were taken as 1999, McNabbs draft and this is what you got

    1 1 Tim Couch
    1 2 Donovan McNabb
    1 3 Akili Smith
    1 11 Daunte Culpepper
    1 12 Cade McNown
    2 50 Shaun King

Only 2 out of 6 of these guys showed up!!! The rest Bust!

  16. EMRaiders Says:

I’ll say one thing, all of a sudden our schedule this year against the “winnable” teams just got a lot harder. With the Fairley pick by detroit, it seems all our opponents are getting better on D.

Of course there’s the chance some of these picks won’t pan out, and there’s injuries as well, but man, our schedule is getting tougher by the pick.

  17. marios Says:

Will Fairley have the success Suh had? I don’t think so but still

  18. YoungAmerican Says:

And if Schwartz, Suh, and Vandenbosch can’t help Fairley get the most out of his abilities, no one can. Like this pick. OTs will be there when the Lions are on the board in the 2nd. Fairley is a very solid pick from a value standpoint.

  19. severeraiderz Says:

If this QB run ends with Kawpernick still on the board he will last until 48….I’m surprised so many are going in such a mediocre class for that position

  20. marios Says:

The Lions have just grown a pair.

  21. bcz24 Says:

Whoa… I think detroit might have the best defensive interior in football

  22. El Tato Says:

    Dolphins will pick Kaepernick 15th.

Suh & Fairley in DET… WOW

  23. Dakota Says:

Man the lions can move some guys around on the d-line with Fairley, Suh and Vandenbosch….wouldn’t want to be a QB lining up on an obvious passing situation against those guys.

  24. severeraiderz Says:

    Terrapin,
Sean King did alright for himself

  25. marios Says:

What if Titus Young is available at 48?

  26. aig-raiders Says:

Fairley singlehandedly turn the Auburan vs Bama game around with his plays. Cam Newton wouldnt even be a first overall without Fairley. Fairley is the real deal. He produced and dominated just like Suh did but yet people where drooling over McCoy instead last year. Detroit got soooooo lucky.

  27. Dakota Says:

Rams pick a DE…..does this mean they are giving up on Chris Long?

  28. marios Says:

    Quinn at Rams

  29. marios Says:

@ Dakota, No i think they just want someone to play opposite him

they are early winners of this draft, them and Browns which havent picked any yet… totally crazy what Falcons gave up for Julio Jones..

  31. severeraiderz Says:

Lol we play Detroit next year….CJ will show us why me and many others were right and he shoulda been our 1st pick and the Duh/Fairley combo will give our interior line a lot of problems

  32. El Tato Says:

    Here go Kaepernick

  33. Raider D Says:

Top of the draft 2 u gents! Wow what a D-line …..Fairly to Detroit! Doesn’t look like Captain Kap is gone make it to #48!!!!

  34. SharkCatcher Says:

omeka okafur always has that same stupid look and reaction like ” what foul”

  35. severeraiderz Says:

    Suh*

  36. 860Todd Christensen Says:

Lets hope Al goes O-line early, or we are gonna need a QB soon!

  37. Carl Weathers Says:

What did Atlanta give to swap with the Browns?

  38. SharkCatcher Says:

    emeka okafor*

  39. Dakota Says:

Man with all of the records guys like Newton, Ponder, Locker and Gabbert set during their careers it is no surprise that the NFL is treating them like the class of 83…..oh wait, you mean these guys really didn’t do much in their college careers?

    Oh, strange.

  40. bcz24 Says:

Yeah that trade by Atlanta was horrible. Julio Jones cost them FIVE picks!! Terrible decision.

  41. aig-raiders Says:

oh yeah Pouncey to Miami. Kappy still alive.

  42. marios Says:

    Pouncey to Dolphins

What did Atlanta give to swap with the Browns?

    2 first rounders (2011 and 12)
    1 second rounder (2012)
    2 fourth rounders(2011 and 12)

  50. bcz24 Says:

NE either takes Ingram or robs us to trade this pick back to us.

  51. marios Says:

    I love Eisen’s rhyming quotes

  52. Dakota Says:

NE doesn’t need a RB they have Woodhead!

  53. Dakota Says:

NE will pick up Rickey Williams as a FA.

  54. bcz24 Says:

Miami will get rid of the oft injured Ronnie Brown long before Ricky Williams

  55. 860Todd Christensen Says:

If we don’t fix o-line, Cables 8w’s are gonna look good! Mark it down!

    *********

I’m not watching so I have no idea who the commentators are, but, did they rip Atlanta a new one for that trade? That is ridiculous! A good pick for atlanta but WAAAAAY too costly.

  57. bcz24 Says:

Nope. They actually praised them for going to get a playmaker.

  58. Carl Weathers Says:

I bet Davis could have made that same type of trade in ‘09 and STILL took DHB!!

Well, Gruden did show a DHB-like highlight clip of him dropping balls.

  60. marios Says:

Let’s see what we lost by getting seymour

  61. YoungAmerican Says:

Atlanta obviously believes they’re so close to being a championship team that they don’t need many picks. It’s a risk, but it makes that offense straight-up deadly.

  62. marios Says:

    Cameron Jordan maybe

  63. EMRaiders Says:

    TRADE!

Al Davis for a winning season!

  64. bcz24 Says:

There aint a player in this draft that could make me think he was worth 5 picks.

  65. Kirk Says:

Atlanta just made a terrible mistake. Dallas traded Herschel Walker for a bunch of picks and won the Super Bowl because of it.

  66. priesttj Says:

I agree Kirk that much for a WR is troubling…even if he’s everything they want that is a lot to give up.
