Hue Jackson press session highlights

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, April 28th, 2011 at 10:06 pm in Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders did not have a selection in the first round of the NFL draft for the first time since 1989 and are scheduled to pick at No. 48 Friday.

Raiders coach Hue Jackson said he and owner Al Davis considered several opportunities, but none of them was the right fit. He reiterated the Raiders already have their first round pick _ Richard Seymour, who cost Oakland the No. 17 selection the Patriots used to pick offensive tackle Nate Solder out of Colorado.

Some of the things addressed by Jackson regarding the first round and players beginning to return to work Friday:

The scene in the draft room

“There was so much phone-calling going on in that room like you wouldn’t believe. There were a lot of opportunities but nothing that really fit for us . . . obviously the player has to be there when you want to trade with somebody, and there were several phone calls made but it just didn’t fit for us at this time.’’

The experience of running a draft with Davis

“Just seeing the different dynamics that happen, getting a phone call, talking to him saying, `Hey, what do you think about this? What do you think about that? `No.’ Then we talk about a few more things. `Maybe.’ Then we talk about a few more things. `No way.’

The position in the draft of teams that called

“Oh you’d be surprised. A little bit of everywhere. I think a lot of people wanted to get out of the first round.
“ It’s a different type of draft obviously because of what’s been going on so I think a lot of teams wanted to make sure that value of a player was very important, so I think from everywhere there was about every team really truly discussing trying to move out of it and some teams were trying to move in.’’

The confluence of the draft and return of players to work

“I love chaos. Bring it on. That’s probably when I’m at my best. I love it. All kinds of stuff was flying around today, right? We get our players back. All of a sudden they say ‘Hey you get to talk to them now,’ and that’s what we did. We tried to talk to every last one of them or text them. We did it all today.
“I tried to call every last one of them. I called them. I texted them. I got calls back. We did it today.’’

What is expected of players upon arrival

“When they get here they’ll start getting acclimated to our offseason program, getting acclimated to our coaches, just get back into football, just being back in the building and us getting to know them, them getting to know us and starting this process on our journey toward our goal.’’

On timing of the first minicamp

“I don’t know . . . there’s still some rules that need to come down from the league. I came right out of the draft room and all of a sudden they grab me and say you got go downstairs. I didn’t get to read anything else. My thing is once I find out about all the different rules that’s going to be in effect for what we’re trying to accomplish with the league, you know, we’re going to do everything the right way, then we’ll make that decision about when minicamp will be and when OTAs will be and all the different things we have to do.’’

No discussion of labor situation with players

“There’s not been one player that I talked to that even mentioned the lockout. The players I talked to are excited and ‘Coach, I am there. I’m all in. When do you want me to be there? When can I get there? What do I need to do? Who do I need to talk to? Let’s schedule a flight, and get me there.’ And I think that’s what’s most important. I think all of our players are very excited about where we’re headed.”

On how much time was actually missed by veterans

“There’s some offseason time that has been lost as far as conditioning. Again, pros in this league understand what they need to do to get ready to play. I think every player’s been training. Has he been training under the watchful eye of somebody within the organization? No. But I think a pro football player knows what his job is.

“And if he wants to continue to make the money and support his family, he has to make sure his corporation is ready to go perform. And I think that’s what they do. I think they prepare themselves.’’

Timeline on the arrival of players

“I think they’ll be trickling in. It’s like anything, you call ‘em, and there are some guys that still have some loose ends to tie up. Again, the word I love to use is fluid . . . What I said to our players, I want to see you in this building at some point in time next week. I think our guys will get here.

“They’re excited about getting here and they’re doing everything they can to be here by Monday because that’s when our team will start, it’s when our offseason program will begin.

Whether he’s confident about getting the player they’ve targeted at No. 48

“I feel pretty good. I mean, there’s still a lot of good players on that board, a lot of guys that we evaluated and are sitting there for us. This is a process, it can change, you can wake up in the morning and after our first pick the whole board can go upside down or it can stay consistent and just keep on flowing. But there’s a lot of good players from the Raiders to choose from starting tomorrow.’’

TRANSLATION: Everybody wanted the #48 pick and our 2012 1st-Rounder.

    I’m glad we stood pat.

  4. 408RAIDER Says:

Yall aint knowing about the power of my lucky avatar! Cant wait for tomorrow!

  5. JB Says:

Make that #48 pick count, HuJack. Let’s figure a way to keep Nnamdi & possibly even Huff. After Gallery gets out there and sees he can’t get what he thinks he’s worth, he just might come back and AD will give him a little more than the last offer just to appease him. I don’t see Satele or Barnes going anywhere and we still have MHenderson, Walker & BCampbell in the wings so adding 3 more OL (either by draft or FA) should enable us to put a decent line together.

Really looking forward to tomorrows picks. Should be interesting.

  6. priesttj Says:

Yeah I’m very glad too……..we don’t need to reach we can get a good player at 48 and in the 3rd. Guys just want to trade up for the excitement. Doesn’t make sense…

  7. r8eray Says:

    408….what up?? You tweeting?

  8. Bauce Rules Says:

    Agh!

  9. RaiderRetribution Says:

    List of players still available:

    DBs: Williams, Brown, Harris, Moore

LBs: Ayers,Wilson, Carter, Sturdivant, Reed, Moch, Herzlich

DL: Bowers, Paea, Austin, Sheard, Beal

    TEs: Rudolph, Kendricks, Williams

    WRs: Little, Hankerson, Cobb, Young

    QBs: Dalton, Mallett, Kaepernick

OL: Wisniewski, Hudson, Ijalana, Franklin, Reid, Gilbert, Barksdale, Moffitt

if we stand pat we get any two of these 30-40 players

  10. Bauce Rules Says:

Nnamdi and Huff need to stay away. I been saying all along we didnt need to trade up. We gonna get good players friday and saturday….believe that

  11. r8eray Says:

Pats can now conduct a Mallett-Dalton-Kaepernick auction!
Let’s see if the Raiders take the bait!

  12. Bauce Rules Says:

Drafting a WR THIS WEEKEND would be be stupid. We need a vet WR

  13. Bauce Rules Says:

I say we dont draft a qb until 4th of 5th round the earliest

  14. r8eray Says:

    Bauce….Tyrod Taylor in the 5th!

  15. aig-raiders Says:

We def need a vet WR. That is one area where we dont have any vet to team up with the young kids on our team.

  16. RaiderRetribution Says:

I’m extremely confident that Al & Hue’s draft board is completely intact.

I think we will draft either Harris, Wisniewski, or Hudson.

Even though we are solid with our front seven, I could see the Raiders going after Bowers, Wilson, or Reed.

In fact if we got Bowers I would not have a problem at all with us getting an OL in the 3rd or even 4th round.

  17. PassTheCheetos Says:

please somebody draft mallett so we we can.

  18. PassTheCheetos Says:

    cant*

  19. PassTheCheetos Says:

Bowers was originally considered valuable enough to go to denver at no. 2. Id be solid on that.

  20. RaiderRetribution Says:

Raiders need to sign a couple of their FA’s, namely Satele & Barnes, this would give us flexibility in the draft[let Henderson walk & Walker retire].

  21. RaiderRetribution Says:

Zach & Rudolph as bookend tight ends?

  22. PurpleDrank81 Says:

Bauce man Kaepernick is something special…. If we dont get him Id take tyrod taylor in the 5th

  23. aig-raiders Says:

I wonder if Al can resist passing on DaQuan Bowers. A healthy Bowers can do wonder for stopping the run on our DL from the ends. Dude is a bonafided stud when healthy. He can certainly shed blockers, a problem we have had a bad history with.

  24. priesttj Says:

Hue jackson is the most gregarious guy I’ve ever seen he is extremely engaging with the media and man can he work a room. I’m not sure exactly what Mr Davis saw in him that amde him select him but the guy is non short of amazing in pressers. And a helluva coach to boot.

Guys like that give good interviews.

  26. Kirk Says:

I think Jackson is our best coach since Gruden. It won’t mean much if we don’t get some good O linemen though.

Any crackers & cheese with that?

  29. RaiderRetribution Says:

Priest I just saw Coach Jackson post-draft day interview. I was really impressed by him. He works the press much like President Reagan did.

What really impressed me the most was the manner in which he desribed his respect for Al Davis,”… as a coach, an owner, and a man.”

  30. JLofty Says:

Man that was a good draft day for us!! We got no codeine addicted $60mil anchors. No alligator armed 10-yr Left Tackles, no stone handed top ten pick wideouts, no glass footed runners, no drunk pollock kickers, no gf beatin washout CBs, no drug addicted surfer QB prodigies, not bad. Not bad at all…

  31. RaiderRetribution Says:

Bengals at 35, Cardinals 38, Redskins 41, and 49ers at 45 are all in need of a quarterback, I figure at least 2/3 qbs available between Mallett, Dalton, and Kaepernick will be drafted.

  32. RaiderRetribution Says:

    lofty that was funny #30.

  33. RaiderRetribution Says:

I do not see Bowers getting by Browns or Bills.

  34. Gust372 Says:

  35. PurpleDrank81 Says:

    Just won the superbowl

  36. aig-raiders Says:

My hunch is they really want Kappy for Hue. Hue prob thinks Kappy is the next Flacco.

  37. El Dirty Says:

Today was exciting like the hot girl that works at Starbucks. Get real happy to see her and just leave with coffee.

  38. La Milicia Negra Says:

    BHP…

yup, I was clearly wrong, I obviously meant Mallet, I guess it was too late…

but btw, you talk about ignorance… well have you notice most of the players you are high on, fail!? it doesnt matter if its rookies or Vets, but you trackrecord is pure as hell..

  39. Demon Raider Says:

I am hoping either CB/FS Aaron Williams falling to 48 or going best OL available…

  40. El Tato Says:

could be Miami corner Brandon Harris also

  41. El Tato Says:

DaQuan Bowers knee must be really bad, there was some talk about him being the first overall pick, if he can stay healthy someone is going to get a steal.

  42. Raiderbuck Says:

It’s hard to be a “yes” man and say thing that sound genuine, HJ quote of “We did it today” well what exactly did you do? Because in the end no pick was made. If that much effort was put forth you sure have nothing to show for it.

  43. RaiderRockstar Says:

I wonder what JFB makes of the Colts drafting OL in RD1?

kind of blows a hole in his theory about O-Lineman, doesn’t it?

  44. RaiderRockstar Says:

    4 QB’s in the Top 32, eh?

I guess that means we’ll have a chance to sign Matt Moore, Vince Young, David Garrard or Tarvaris Jackson as #2 QB behind Jason Campbell …

I expect Kerry Collins, Jimmy Clausen, Luke McCown & Joe Webb to stay put

  45. RaiderRockstar Says:

Mallett, Dalton or Kaepernick at #48 ???

  46. RaiderRockstar Says:

Congrats to the Raiders for NOT getting involved last night … we really don’t have that many holes

    fix the passing game!

That means a QB and some O-Line help in Rounds 2-4

He had the colts taking Solder. The Colts had to be EXSTATIC that the Patsies blew it at 17.

  48. bcz24 Says:

If Dalton is available at 48 I dont think you can pass on him. I wouldnt mind us packing some picks (other than the 48) to NE to get Da’Quan Bowers at 33. Not necessarily a ‘need’ per say but definitely good value. And if he doesnt go 33, he IS going 34 to Denver

  49. hwnrdr Says:

    Good Morning Nation!
    Rockstar, Bcz24…what’s up guys?
My opinion, looks like Ravens secondary got stronger. Pitt and the J-E-T-S got stronger on D…Hope Al and Hue Jack get it right!!!
Oh, and where is Reggie Bush going? He tweeted last night Its been fun New Orleans (?)…

I agree! I would hate Bowers going to those two, or any other AFC West or SF! And Dalton, if he’s still there…may as well jump at him!

  51. bcz24 Says:

I think a GREAT fit for Bush would be in Cincy. A FA splash like that combined with jettisoning Ocho could be enough to keep Carson on board with them.

I think Atlanta blew it big time, they spent 5 picks on the 2nd best WR, when they could have gotten the 3rd best WR for their own pick!

Vikings blew it too. Ponder at 12? Terrible.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE what Detroit did. They may have the best interior DL in football.

  52. Kirk Says:

    O line help, please.

  53. DIRT-LOT FOOTBALL Says:

THE RAIDERS WILL PICK AT LEAST TWICE IN THE 2ND ROUND..A LOT OF MOVEMENT 2DAY.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE what Detroit did. They may have the best interior DL in football.

Man…who you telling? Suh and Fairley? Wow! If Stafford can stay healthy…

  55. MikieG Says:

Like I said before, out of the 32 first round picks, thee were only about 15 players that actually graded out to BE first round pics, the other 17 players are actually graded out to the second round, which is where we sit. It’s all about value, and 17 teams just got hosed. Why do you think so many teams wanted out of the first round? Personally I think we should trade our second rounder this year for a first rounder next year and have two first rounders next year, then deal our extra for 2 seconds and a third..
We’ll see who we get at 48, but if it aint Kaepernick, it better be someone who can block, and block well….

  56. souldogdave Says:

Bowers’ knee is bone on bone.I’m a 54 yr old man, that’s how my hip is, and it hurts.Every day. This kid is damaged goods, stay away.

  57. hwnrdr Says:

You guys rather have Kappy or Dalton? I am leaning towards Andy Dalton…if a qb is on Al’s mind…

  58. bcz24 Says:

Dalton played in a real pro-style offense. If we go QB he would be the guy.

To get a guy like Bowers in the second round, even if you only get him for 4 years is a steal, and value you cant pass on.

  59. Buckeyeraider Says:

    G’morning fellas.

I read Monte Poole’s column this morning, and I think that dude is full of crap. I think he is way off base. I do not see center as this team’s biggest priority. In fact it’s far from it.

I understand the Raider’s great tradition at center and it’s importance. That’s why I was advocating drafting Alex Mack a couple of years ago. He had the potential to be SPECIAL.

I don’t see that in either Wiz 2.0 or Hudson. I know Wiz 2.0 is very popular around here, but he is not his uncle. He’s described as a tecnician who gets by on hustle. He’s not particularly big nor physical. In fact, draft guides describe him as an excellent ZONE BLOCKING prospect. Hell, center isn’t even his natural or seemingly favorite position. He payed RG at Penn State last year.

Hudson is only 299 lbs, and I don’t see him as defenite upgrade to Satele, who might have been Oaklands best and most consistant O-lineman by the end of last year.

Offensive line defenitely needs alot of attention in this draft. Gallery is gone and Loper is no sure thing. Campbell is an exciting athletic prospect but an unknown commodity. Walker is pondering retirement.

The Raiders were second in the league in rushing w/ Satele at C.Looking to replace a position that’s already adequately filled isn’t improving the team. It’s merely treading water. Other positions on the line are more pressing needs, IMO.

I like Moffitt. He’s big and physical. he can come in and challenge Loper at LG and also be a BACKUP for Satele at C, which they do desperately need.

  60. Silverandblack666 Says:

very confusing to me why everyone is crowing Hue Jackson already the guy has not won a game as an NFL head coach yet. Sure he give a great interview but unless he wins more than 8 games next year it don’t mean anything. Maybe he has chocolate balls and thats why you are all suckling on them so hard.

  61. Buckeyeraider Says:

I also like Orlando Franklin out of Miami (Fla). He could play either RG or RT. He’s supposed to play with a mean streak.

AD would probably be willing to take a chance on Marcus Cannon. Hopefully that man makes a full recovery. Al like to gamble on picks like that. He got a steal with Bush a couple of years ago. Cannon could be worth a late rd gamble.

Moore showed some great play at the end of the ‘09 season, but that was only a few games.
VY knows how to win but is the guy stable?
    Garrard is inconsistently mediocre.
Jackson is no better than Bruce.

    Soup is the man!!

  63. Carl Weathers Says:

    my opinion on the draft:

    1. glad the raiders didnt have a 1st rd pick, because I would see them reaching for a pick

    2. Glad Smith went to the Ravens, because he had to catch Al’s eyes, but the kid is too much trouble.

    3. Raiders should go OL with both picks( maybe a QB) but if they go at CB or Saftey…both Huff and Nnamdi are gone.

    Carl Weathers,

The first I heard about was from Steve Corkran when he did the live chat the other day. I believe Jerry then mentioned it during his chat as well.

Corkran also broke the news that Mario Henderson rejected a 1 year contract offer, and that Khalif Barnes was looking to go start for some other team. Wasn’t happy with his role and playing time in Oakland.

I hadn’t heard any of that. Corkran really scooped our boy Jerry. lol.

  75. Carl Weathers Says:

How sad is it that the only place I could find out what time the draft is tonight, was wikipedia. NFL.com sucks ballz.

  76. Buckeyeraider Says:

Jason Laconfora on NFLN just mentioned Colin K and the Raiders. Said the raiders have shown a lot of interest in him, as have the Dolphins. He said Miami actually considered Kaepernick at 15. Wow.

He said Oakland might have to trade up a lil to get him.

    It’s gonna get interesting.

  77. RaiderRockstar Says:

  78. severeraiderz Says:

The Pats might swing this pick for a future first-rounder, but we’re not projecting trades. Reed is a relentless, explosive pass rusher. New England could use a double-digit sack threat across from 2010 second-round pick Jermaine Cunningham.

    34. Bills: Colin Kaepernick, quarterback, Nevada.

Of the quarterbacks left after day one, Kaepernick is the best fit for coach Chan Gailey’s offense.

  83. Carl Weathers Says:

For you guys hoping for Kaper, I think Cincy, Arizona, Washington and the Niners are all gonna take a QB at some point.

I am not dissing Hue jack just not ready to crown him as a great head coach until he wins some games as a HEAD COACH.

Sure he did a great job of turning our offense around last year but so did Mike Matrz when he was the offensive coordinator of the Rams and we all know what happened when he was promoted to head coach.

Yes I am optimistic about Hue jack but until he wins more than 8 games as our HEAD COACH the jury is still out. I am not ready to crown him as the next Vince Lombardi.

He had a single meniscal surgery with microfracture techniques. Dr. James Andrews consults on him and has gone and the record and said he will be fine.

Bowers’ poor performance on his Pro Day was as consequence of him being deconditioned, NOT a problem with ‘bone on bone.’ He has cartilage.

Ultimately, all elite athletes end up with cartilage damage. Kobe Bryant has already had 3 cartilage surgeries, and basketball generates more torque on the knee than football.

I haven’t crowned anyone anything and apparently you are the one with a low football IQ because you don’t realize that on the other side of your argument are the numerous men that have made that same transition quite successfully. All I am saying is dont pan the guy before even has his first mini camp as a HC. He is the primary reason that we won 8 games. He was responsible for raising the level of play of our offense and defense. He heightened the intensity and competition in practice and brought the passing game out of the stone ages, though we still have a ways to go.

Lol my feelings aren’t hurt and i actually find this back and forth amusing. Your argument makes no sense, just because he is the reason that we won 8 games doesnt automatically make him the reason we lost 8. We improved from 5 wins to 8, from 11 losses to 8. He was responsible for improvement all around

    2010 passing yards- 3180
    2009 passing yards- 2557

Houston is not a lateral move. The addition of Nnamdi and a second round CB can possibly put them in the top 10 in pass defense, they already have a stout run defense and one of the leagues best offenses. Nnamdi could be the piece that completes their puzzle

  140. edward teach Says:

No way we get both Kaepernick and Bowers. We will have to trade up to get one of them, and the other one will be gone by #48.

I doubt very seriously that we’re the only ones that know Da’Quan Bowers is still on the board, and as I have mentioned several times already, the QB position is going to be way overdrafted this year.

I don’t care if we do trade our first-rounder in 2012, we ain’t gettin’ both of those guys.

Do you honestly see that happening?

I see us taking Ras-I Dowling, or Rodney Hudson

Unless we can pull off a trade to get an additional second round pick.

  145. RaiderDuck Says:

I can see us moving up to get Kaepernick; Campbell is OK, but will never be great.

Time to get going on the next generation.

  146. edward teach Says:

I say we stay put and take Mallett if he’s there. Ryan Mallett may not have the mobility you’re looking for, but he’s a whole lot more pro-ready than Kaepernick and he’s got an obvious chip on his shoulder to prove people wrong.

Don’t mortgage our first-rounder next year for a defensive end when we have way bigger issues elsewhere and a quarterback that hasn’t played against top-level competition.

Can’t say it enough; the QB class this year is way overrated and with the other needs we have it’s just not worth it to trade up for one.

  147. Gust372 Says:

Did the Raiders even pick anyone yet? This draft sucks. And I don’t understand how the NFL can make these rules. Judge rules the lockout is illegal. Things should resume as normal, right?
