Hue Jackson press session highlights

Share

The Raiders did not have a selection in the first round of the NFL draft for the first time since 1989 and are scheduled to pick at No. 48 Friday.

Raiders coach Hue Jackson said he and owner Al Davis considered several opportunities, but none of them was the right fit. He reiterated the Raiders already have their first round pick _ Richard Seymour, who cost Oakland the No. 17 selection the Patriots used to pick offensive tackle Nate Solder out of Colorado.

Some of the things addressed by Jackson regarding the first round and players beginning to return to work Friday:

The scene in the draft room

“There was so much phone-calling going on in that room like you wouldn’t believe. There were a lot of opportunities but nothing that really fit for us . . . obviously the player has to be there when you want to trade with somebody, and there were several phone calls made but it just didn’t fit for us at this time.’’

The experience of running a draft with Davis

“Just seeing the different dynamics that happen, getting a phone call, talking to him saying, `Hey, what do you think about this? What do you think about that? `No.’ Then we talk about a few more things. `Maybe.’ Then we talk about a few more things. `No way.’

The position in the draft of teams that called

“Oh you’d be surprised. A little bit of everywhere. I think a lot of people wanted to get out of the first round.
“ It’s a different type of draft obviously because of what’s been going on so I think a lot of teams wanted to make sure that value of a player was very important, so I think from everywhere there was about every team really truly discussing trying to move out of it and some teams were trying to move in.’’

The confluence of the draft and return of players to work

“I love chaos. Bring it on. That’s probably when I’m at my best. I love it. All kinds of stuff was flying around today, right? We get our players back. All of a sudden they say ‘Hey you get to talk to them now,’ and that’s what we did. We tried to talk to every last one of them or text them. We did it all today.
“I tried to call every last one of them. I called them. I texted them. I got calls back. We did it today.’’

What is expected of players upon arrival

“When they get here they’ll start getting acclimated to our offseason program, getting acclimated to our coaches, just get back into football, just being back in the building and us getting to know them, them getting to know us and starting this process on our journey toward our goal.’’

On timing of the first minicamp

“I don’t know . . . there’s still some rules that need to come down from the league. I came right out of the draft room and all of a sudden they grab me and say you got go downstairs. I didn’t get to read anything else. My thing is once I find out about all the different rules that’s going to be in effect for what we’re trying to accomplish with the league, you know, we’re going to do everything the right way, then we’ll make that decision about when minicamp will be and when OTAs will be and all the different things we have to do.’’

No discussion of labor situation with players

“There’s not been one player that I talked to that even mentioned the lockout. The players I talked to are excited and ‘Coach, I am there. I’m all in. When do you want me to be there? When can I get there? What do I need to do? Who do I need to talk to? Let’s schedule a flight, and get me there.’ And I think that’s what’s most important. I think all of our players are very excited about where we’re headed.”

On how much time was actually missed by veterans

“There’s some offseason time that has been lost as far as conditioning. Again, pros in this league understand what they need to do to get ready to play. I think every player’s been training. Has he been training under the watchful eye of somebody within the organization? No. But I think a pro football player knows what his job is.

“And if he wants to continue to make the money and support his family, he has to make sure his corporation is ready to go perform. And I think that’s what they do. I think they prepare themselves.’’

Timeline on the arrival of players

“I think they’ll be trickling in. It’s like anything, you call ‘em, and there are some guys that still have some loose ends to tie up. Again, the word I love to use is fluid . . . What I said to our players, I want to see you in this building at some point in time next week. I think our guys will get here.

“They’re excited about getting here and they’re doing everything they can to be here by Monday because that’s when our team will start, it’s when our offseason program will begin.

Whether he’s confident about getting the player they’ve targeted at No. 48

“I feel pretty good. I mean, there’s still a lot of good players on that board, a lot of guys that we evaluated and are sitting there for us. This is a process, it can change, you can wake up in the morning and after our first pick the whole board can go upside down or it can stay consistent and just keep on flowing. But there’s a lot of good players from the Raiders to choose from starting tomorrow.’’

    Marvin Austin

    Benjamin Ijalana

“There were a lot of opportunities, but nothing that really fit for us…”

TRANSLATION: Everybody wanted the #48 pick and our 2012 1st-Rounder.

    I’m glad we stood pat.

  • Yall aint knowing about the power of my lucky avatar! Cant wait for tomorrow!

  • JB

Make that #48 pick count, HuJack. Let’s figure a way to keep Nnamdi & possibly even Huff. After Gallery gets out there and sees he can’t get what he thinks he’s worth, he just might come back and AD will give him a little more than the last offer just to appease him. I don’t see Satele or Barnes going anywhere and we still have MHenderson, Walker & BCampbell in the wings so adding 3 more OL (either by draft or FA) should enable us to put a decent line together.

Really looking forward to tomorrows picks. Should be interesting.

  • priesttj

Yeah I’m very glad too……..we don’t need to reach we can get a good player at 48 and in the 3rd. Guys just want to trade up for the excitement. Doesn’t make sense…

  • 408….what up?? You tweeting?

  • Bauce Rules

    Agh!

  • RaiderRetribution

    List of players still available:

    DBs: Williams, Brown, Harris, Moore

LBs: Ayers,Wilson, Carter, Sturdivant, Reed, Moch, Herzlich

DL: Bowers, Paea, Austin, Sheard, Beal

    TEs: Rudolph, Kendricks, Williams

    WRs: Little, Hankerson, Cobb, Young

    QBs: Dalton, Mallett, Kaepernick

OL: Wisniewski, Hudson, Ijalana, Franklin, Reid, Gilbert, Barksdale, Moffitt

if we stand pat we get any two of these 30-40 players

  • Bauce Rules

Nnamdi and Huff need to stay away. I been saying all along we didnt need to trade up. We gonna get good players friday and saturday….believe that

  • Pats can now conduct a Mallett-Dalton-Kaepernick auction!
Let’s see if the Raiders take the bait!

  • Bauce Rules

Drafting a WR THIS WEEKEND would be be stupid. We need a vet WR

  • Bauce Rules

I say we dont draft a qb until 4th of 5th round the earliest

  • Bauce….Tyrod Taylor in the 5th!

  • aig-raiders

We def need a vet WR. That is one area where we dont have any vet to team up with the young kids on our team.

  • RaiderRetribution

I’m extremely confident that Al & Hue’s draft board is completely intact.

I think we will draft either Harris, Wisniewski, or Hudson.

Even though we are solid with our front seven, I could see the Raiders going after Bowers, Wilson, or Reed.

In fact if we got Bowers I would not have a problem at all with us getting an OL in the 3rd or even 4th round.

  • PassTheCheetos

please somebody draft mallett so we we can.

  • PassTheCheetos

    cant*

  • PassTheCheetos

Bowers was originally considered valuable enough to go to denver at no. 2. Id be solid on that.

  • RaiderRetribution

Raiders need to sign a couple of their FA’s, namely Satele & Barnes, this would give us flexibility in the draft[let Henderson walk & Walker retire].

  • RaiderRetribution

Zach & Rudolph as bookend tight ends?

  • PurpleDrank81

Bauce man Kaepernick is something special…. If we dont get him Id take tyrod taylor in the 5th

  • aig-raiders

I wonder if Al can resist passing on DaQuan Bowers. A healthy Bowers can do wonder for stopping the run on our DL from the ends. Dude is a bonafided stud when healthy. He can certainly shed blockers, a problem we have had a bad history with.

Hue jackson is the most gregarious guy I’ve ever seen he is extremely engaging with the media and man can he work a room. I’m not sure exactly what Mr Davis saw in him that amde him select him but the guy is non short of amazing in pressers. And a helluva coach to boot.

Guys like that give good interviews.

  • Kirk

I think Jackson is our best coach since Gruden. It won’t mean much if we don’t get some good O linemen though.

  • The Blackhole

    Mallett or Kaepernick at 48

Any crackers & cheese with that?

  • RaiderRetribution

Priest I just saw Coach Jackson post-draft day interview. I was really impressed by him. He works the press much like President Reagan did.

What really impressed me the most was the manner in which he desribed his respect for Al Davis,”… as a coach, an owner, and a man.”

  • JLofty

Man that was a good draft day for us!! We got no codeine addicted $60mil anchors. No alligator armed 10-yr Left Tackles, no stone handed top ten pick wideouts, no glass footed runners, no drunk pollock kickers, no gf beatin washout CBs, no drug addicted surfer QB prodigies, not bad. Not bad at all…

  • RaiderRetribution

Bengals at 35, Cardinals 38, Redskins 41, and 49ers at 45 are all in need of a quarterback, I figure at least 2/3 qbs available between Mallett, Dalton, and Kaepernick will be drafted.

  • RaiderRetribution

    lofty that was funny #30.

  • RaiderRetribution

I do not see Bowers getting by Browns or Bills.

  • Gust372

So what happened? Did we win?

  • PurpleDrank81

    Just won the superbowl

  • aig-raiders

My hunch is they really want Kappy for Hue. Hue prob thinks Kappy is the next Flacco.

  • El Dirty

Today was exciting like the hot girl that works at Starbucks. Get real happy to see her and just leave with coffee.

  • BHP…

yup, I was clearly wrong, I obviously meant Mallet, I guess it was too late…

but btw, you talk about ignorance… well have you notice most of the players you are high on, fail!? it doesnt matter if its rookies or Vets, but you trackrecord is pure as hell..

  • Demon Raider

I am hoping either CB/FS Aaron Williams falling to 48 or going best OL available…

  • El Tato

could be Miami corner Brandon Harris also

  • El Tato

DaQuan Bowers knee must be really bad, there was some talk about him being the first overall pick, if he can stay healthy someone is going to get a steal.

  • Raiderbuck

It’s hard to be a “yes” man and say thing that sound genuine, HJ quote of “We did it today” well what exactly did you do? Because in the end no pick was made. If that much effort was put forth you sure have nothing to show for it.

  • RaiderRockstar

I wonder what JFB makes of the Colts drafting OL in RD1?

kind of blows a hole in his theory about O-Lineman, doesn’t it?

  • RaiderRockstar

    4 QB’s in the Top 32, eh?

I guess that means we’ll have a chance to sign Matt Moore, Vince Young, David Garrard or Tarvaris Jackson as #2 QB behind Jason Campbell …

I expect Kerry Collins, Jimmy Clausen, Luke McCown & Joe Webb to stay put

  • RaiderRockstar

Mallett, Dalton or Kaepernick at #48 ???

  • RaiderRockstar

Congrats to the Raiders for NOT getting involved last night … we really don’t have that many holes

    fix the passing game!

That means a QB and some O-Line help in Rounds 2-4

He had the colts taking Solder. The Colts had to be EXSTATIC that the Patsies blew it at 17.

  • bcz24

If Dalton is available at 48 I dont think you can pass on him. I wouldnt mind us packing some picks (other than the 48) to NE to get Da’Quan Bowers at 33. Not necessarily a ‘need’ per say but definitely good value. And if he doesnt go 33, he IS going 34 to Denver

  • hwnrdr

    Good Morning Nation!
    Rockstar, Bcz24…what’s up guys?
My opinion, looks like Ravens secondary got stronger. Pitt and the J-E-T-S got stronger on D…Hope Al and Hue Jack get it right!!!
Oh, and where is Reggie Bush going? He tweeted last night Its been fun New Orleans (?)…

I agree! I would hate Bowers going to those two, or any other AFC West or SF! And Dalton, if he’s still there…may as well jump at him!
