NFL opens for business . . . sort of

By Jerry McDonald - NFL Writer
Thursday, April 28th, 2011 at 10:27 am in Oakland Raiders.

Here’s a link to a release from the NFL detailing what players will be allowed to do awaiting a decision from the 8th Circuit Court of appeals.

Looks like transactions with veteran players will not be a part of this year’s draft.

“With respect to player transactions (such as signings, trades of player contracts, terminations, tryouts, etc.), we plan to distribute to all clubs, likely tomorrow, a comprehensive set of procedures governing such transactions.”

Isn’t that kinda a day late?

How can the NFL impose any new rules anticipating an appeal? There is no lockout! Until a judge overturns that decision, it’s business as usual. The NFL is just writing their own rules now. This is your Bush-era business world, folks, and it started in 2001. Screw the laws, we do what we want, we are the law, we own the system…

I’m not sure if that is a point to say we should or shouldn’t take a flyer on Jenkins.

Gaither is the type of guy you get in the supp draft. Very talented, but can’t string together a couple consectitive, quality seasons because they are headcases.

I just heard on Sirius that the beginning of the “league year” when player movement will be allowed, won’t be until at least Monday or Tuesday.

This draft is gonna suck… Tune in on Sunday for the results.

  20. M Lonetree Says:

    apocalypsis…

when a federal judge writes of “irreparable harm” to players or management she is hysterical. the “irreparable harm” is that any of the spoiled-rotten mofos would actually have to get in line to apply for a real job.
perhaps she should better write her thoughts and judgements regarding the “irreparable harm” caused by malicious corporate entities, usurious financial institutions and corrupt politicians.
adults running and playing ball while accruing ungodly sums of wealth may fall under “pursuit of happiness” but it is not anything necessary or guaranteed as a way of living.
the entire ongoing playground bullying between players and owners is as shameful as the “tuck rule”
(By the way, Judge Nelson is definitely not a Raider fan – anyone who sides with Brady coudn’t be).

  21. Just Fire Baby Says:

One thing I would like to ask Kappy.

I saw his Sporting News spread with him flexing, and I was checking out his tats. Across both of his biceps, on his right arm it reads “My Gift” and the other arm says “is my curse”.

WTF does that mean? What is this curse he speaks of?

But his right-arm is a gift. He was drafted out of HS to be a pitcher, and he said he threw 90 MPH without ever really trying and practicing.

We are not talking about a guy with above average arm strength, or some strong-armed QB. Dude has WORLD-CLASS arm strength.

    Let the Soup era end!!!!

  22. Gust372 Says:

He uses his left arm to hold women down against their will and force himself onto them. Or maybe men. With those bible freaks, you never know.

  23. Gust372 Says:

MLonetree, it’s the owners who want the lockout, not the players. Get informed.

  24. Gust372 Says:

Whoever drafts Cam Newton wins the Super Bowl in 3 years.

  25. Dakota Says:

If the lockout is over then the NFL should re-start drug testing.

  26. M Lonetree Says:

    Gust372,

    the players want more money
    the owners want more money
    get informed

  27. Just Fire Baby Says:

So after we draft Kappy, the next big prediction is when he will get his first start.

I will say week 7, at home against KC, right before the bye.

Soup will have to be at least 4-2 at that stage to withhold the pressure from uptop to go with the rocket-armed youngster.

  28. Dakota Says:

The NFL should allow players under contract to be traded tonight as part of the draft. What difference would it make in the long run? I can see the problem with teams signing free agents, but what harm would there be in allowing players to be traded tonight?

  29. severeraiderz Says:

    via rotoworld:

Trainer Chip Smith, who has worked with top-shelf players for 20 years, believes Nevada’s Colin Kaepernick is a better athlete than Cam Newton.
Smith has spent quite a bit of time with both players. “Colin is actually a little bit better athletically,” said Smith. “He’s a little faster — I’ve clocked him as low as a 4.4 — and there isn’t a quarterback in this draft who throws the ball with the velocity that Colin does. Colin is a better athlete, and he understands the game better … Of the 56 quarterbacks I’ve worked with, Colin is the most prepared for

  30. aig-raiders Says:

With no trades, the draft is only running at 75% of its fun capacity.

  31. Just Fire Baby Says:

Colin also had a 37 wonderlic, 2nd highest amongst QB’s.

  32. Gust372 Says:

Lonetree, I know you’re new to this. But try to understand. This whole dispute is an OWNERS’ LOCKOUT. The owners have instigated it, not the players. Go to wikipedia, look up “Labor Lockout”. you clearly need to understand what’s going on before you open your mouth and reveal to all of us just how confused you are. This is for your own good.

  33. aig-raiders Says:

I doubt Kappy ran an offense that starts with only two numbers like 36 or 52 Cam in Auburn. Cam played streetball at Auburn and not sure how that will transition to the nfl.

  34. severeraiderz Says:

more good news from rotoworld….my fingers are crossed and hoping for Kaepernick

Pro Football Talk has spoken with a source that says a head coach for an AFC West team has Colin Kaepernick rated as the No. 1 quarterback on his draft board.
This report comes on the heels of the news that Kaepernick has been invited to attend the draft in New York City. Together, they paint a compelling picture that the Nevada signal caller will not last beyond round one. Recent reports have linked Kaepernick to the Raiders, but Oakland does not currently own a first-round pick.

Sorry but your are in error.
At the 1991 NFL Draft the Raiders selected Marinovich in the first round; he was the 24th pick overall and the second quarterback taken ahead of Brett Favre. Wow, imagine if we had Farve instead.

  36. Dakota Says:

According to the trade chart, in order to move up from #48 to say #25 to draft Kaepernick, the Raiders would have to give up the #48 pick, plus this year’s 3rd and 4th rounders.

3 players to move up and draft a kid that isn’t even considered a top 20 player in this draft?

Or giving up next year’s #1 and picks this year?

    No trukkin way!

  39. Dakota Says:

For the good of the team Al needs to be drugged and removed from the facility for the next few days.

  40. exlaraiderseasonticketholder Says:

Maranovich was using a friends piss to pass the NFL drug tests (because of his USC drug bust), but his friend had been drinking heavily the night before the test and he failed because of it. LMFAO

  41. Just Fire Baby Says:

We will trade #48, our 3rd next year (will get one back at the end of the round for losing Nnamdi) and a 2012 5th and a 2011 4th.

I agree that even though it would be amazing to have drafted Favre I admit he probaly would not have had the same career if he was with the Raiders for a decade (sad but true). “I decided that we no longer as an organization can fight the battle of personal problems for certain players,” said Davis, who blew $39 million on the out-of-shape Russell. “We tried it in the past, we had been successful with some of the greatest players who’ve ever played professional football, and we failed with some of the greatest players who’ve ever played professional football who had personal problems.”

The Cardinals’ apparent intent to pass on Missouri quarterback Blaine Gabbert at No. 5 in the draft has fueled the belief that Arizona plans to sign a stopgap, free agent quarterback to be its starter in 2011.

While some have speculated about the Cardinals potentially pursuing Donovan McNabb, clued-in Arizona writers believe Marc Bulger is a far more likely option. And according to Len Pasquarelli of the Sports Xchange, a Bulger-Cardinals union may already be in the works.

the Cardinals’ 2011 quarterback plan seems to be laid out. They’ll bring back 2010 fifth-round pick John Skelton, and attempt to develop him behind the 34-year-old Bulger.

It wouldn’t seem like a recipe for success in most NFL divisions, but the Cardinals could probably be plenty competitive with Bulger at quarterback in the NFC West.

    I forgot about this:

    MJD
Raiders cornerback Fabian Washington got a free ride in a police car last night after a domestic dispute with his live-in girlfriend.

According to Washington, the confrontation came about because he was “hanging out with other girls.” From there, their stories differ a little bit.

He says things never got physical (he meant with his girlfriend, no word on how physical things got with the girls he was “hanging out with”), and she pointed to the red marks on her neck and claimed that’s where Washington grabbed her as he pushed her away from their baby.

In Washington’s defense, millions of people watch him play every Sunday, and rarely has he ever been seen hitting anyone. Either way, it probably disqualifies him from any Father of the Year awards.

The incident leaves the Raiders with two problems at cornerback now. They’ve yet to franchise tag or sign Nnamdi Asomugha to a long-term deal, and now they have to deal with this from their other starter.

Cant stand this board at times, the lack of football knowledge is down right shocking!

Does everyone realize that in any other year these qbs (except for newton) wouldnt be anything more than 3rd-4th rd picks. Maybe 1 or 2 could sneak into the second round, but even that is being extremely generous. this has to be one of the worst qb draft classes in the last 10-15 years.

Raiders should not draft a qb, not with so much quality on the board at o-line db, &lb. Here is why.

I dont see anybody in this qb class that is better than JC is now. Nor do i believe that anyone in this class will develop into a better qb than jc, with the obvious exception of newton.

You would be better served filling needs at other spots, and standing pat at qb. Jc will comfortable in his 2nd year in the offense and with his team.

The class at qb is relatively weak next year as well, luck the clear cream of that crop. I say 2013 is the year to look for qbs when my favorite RG3 from baylor will be turning pro along with geno smith.

Al if your reading this Please use the 2nd & 3rd round picks on o-line or secondary. we can pick up lbs late, and if you must get one of the project qbs’ take him in the 7th or sign a ufa. that way when he washes out you didnt give up much. if he some how pulls a miracle and becomes a starter he was a tremendous value because we drafted him so late. DONT REACH FOR THESE QBS’ THAT WOULD BE LATE ROUND DRAFT CHOICES IN ANY DECENT QB DRAFT CLASS.

How about moving to 5 and getting Peterson? That would be live

    —————————————————–
This would be the only reason for moving up that high but ask yourself why? If I have the best corner in the league and proven I pay him the money instead of betting on a make it or brake it player.

    I pay Nnamdi.

  201. CJ Legend 34 Says:

    Mistic1 Tha Supavillain

I would not dog out the whole blog but I will say I agree that this is a weak draft. I also agree we need to focus on the o-line. There is talent all the way to the middle of the second round.

Also, I don’t know why you blow 1st round money on an unproven corner who is hit or miss. There are no blue chip corners except one and that is Peterson who is out of reach, but if I take Peterson that high with guaranteed dollars why not just pay Nnamdi? He is proven and fits right into the system and for crying the #$@& out loud Woodson his mentor will be pushing him in his ear every day he is about to show out! And we trade him after investing all that $ in him???

Now if we took him at 48 I would rather we take a o-lineman but I would not be that upset if a talent like Colin Kaepernick is taken in the second.

Just heard Phil Simms on Sirius. We’re definitely sharing a brain on the QBs in this draft and QBs in general. He said the studs of this draft are Cam Newton and Ryan Mallett, then there’s a drop off. He said he’s watch a ton of film on Newton, Gabbert and Mallett. He was trying to find 20 great, NFL-like throws. It took him 5 games to come up with 20 for Newton and 3 games for Mallett. He 20 great throws by Gabbert all season. He said what strikes him most about Newton on tape is his pocket presence. The guy can have all bodies around him and he always had his eyes up. He said when you see these guys in person, it’s obvious they’re NFL starters. He can’t say the same for Ponder or Dalton. He said he thought Dalton would be a good 4th rounder and was shocked when he was told he was being considered in the 1st. Said that he and Ponder don’t possess the arm strength worthy of a first round pick. He said reports that the Bills want Ponder can’t be true. Said that with development, the best he’ll be is Ryan Fitzpatrick who they already have. He said that Kaepernick can throw it hard, but hates his slow release. Said he talked to a receiver from Nevada who said Kaepernick broke a couple of his fingers in practice, but isn’t very accurate. He thinks teams will wake up and these guys will all drop tonight. He thinks Washington will draft Mallett at #10. I hope and pray we don’t trade up for Kaepernick.

It’s not Gruden’s fault the media labeled him as a genius QB developer. He never claimed to be it.

Something overlooked about cam newton. this kid has a giant chip on his shoulder, & wants to prove all the doubters wrong. i think he cares too much about his own legacy to blow it by doing something dumb. He went from big time florida to tiny blinn jr college, in the midst of making bad decisions. I think this experience humbled, & matured the young man. he has been on a quest for redemption ever since.

I think the so called character issues are way over blown, & he is smart enough to learn any play book. he only needs time.

  283. Gust372 Says:

Hue Jackson has a long way to go to prove he’s even remotely as good as Gruden. Gruden’s got a good all time record, and a SB victory to boot. It’s just a dumb argument. Hue is 0-0. He’s taking over a Raider team that improved by 3 wins. If he doesn’t win 10 games, he’s a joke. Period.

Brien, everything you say of Cam Newton could have been said of Favre or Stabler when they were his age, except that you add this sort of urban, ghetto twist to Newton’s persona. Seems anti-black, to me.

    **************************

Not anti-black as you are anti-reality on the matter. Plus Stabler is a cool mfker and Favre is punk. Still I think Cam is gonna be a great QB I just see trouble in dude. We shall see

Dakota, why do you want to see people fight?
    ++++++++

The real question is why do you want to touch your cousin inappropriately?

  359. Gust372 Says:

Dakota, I find it bizarre that you’re trying to instigate a fight between Brien and Kell. Kind of twisted.

Joe Namath, Jim McMahon…Brien, how many SB winning QBs do you want me to name who had reputations for being trouble prone?

    ************************

Dummy do you see how Nazi the NFL rules are now? You keep mentioning situations when the attitudes in America were different. Bad examples

What’s wrong with that? So did Kobe…

    ====================================================
Kobe was brought up in the game by his dad Jellybean Joe Bryant. Tought him how to attack different zones. Learned the history of the games. Could break down tape. Not how to steal, lie and cheat. His baggage is overwhelming.

Boston isnt not even beating Miami. Lebron James went to the NBA finals with no one on his team and has never even lost a first round series and whenever his team loses its a long series(cept 07 finals). You are pairing him up with a guy who is a superstar Finals MVP in Dwayne Wade. No way can I see two of the top 4 players in the NBA losing unless its to OKC. I dont care what you guys say about the role players but they play defense and they can rebound like a mfker

  365. Gust372 Says:

    anti-reality?

    Brien, try and follow:

Stabler. Favre. Namath. Jim McMahon. All were reputed trouble makers when younger, all won Super Bowls. All you have on Cam Newton is a stolen lap top, something I could see any of the above doing in their college days, assuming laptops even existed then. Then you start going into Cam’s personality and talking about how you grew up with people like him. I don’t even know what that means. But if your’e saying he’s a thug disguised as a party animal, I’d have to assume he would have done worse things than stolen a lap top at this point.
