Jim Otto’s thoughts on Stefen Wisniewski

By Jon Becker
Friday, April 29th, 2011 at 5:34 pm in Oakland Raiders.

Q: What kind of role did you play in the Raiders’ selection of Stefen Wisniewski? Did you have to sign off on the pick?

A: “No, not at all. Not at all. I was kicking his name around for a few days, and last night I was thinking, you know that could possibly happen. I watched him at Penn State since he was a freshman playing. And I thought he was an outstanding football player. I saw him mostly playing guard. If you can play center, you can play guard, tackle or quarterback, whatever.”

Q: What about him specifically impresses you?

A: “Well, he’s strong, he’s intelligent. That’s all been said about him. What we need is strong, intelligent guys that are going to go out there and have a tenaciousness at the way they play, just being tough guys. He’s got all that. He’s big and he’s strong. It runs in the Wisniewski family.”

Q: Any qualities of his that remind you of yourself?

A: “Not really. He’s bigger than I was, but he’s a good football player. I used to like to think that I could play football myself. I wanted to be the best, and he’s that same type of person wanting to be the best out there on any given day and he will be on every day.”

Q: Is there anyone that he reminds you of?
A: “I didn’t see enough of him to really give you a decent answer that way. He plays the type of football that I like, so he’s a Raider and he’s going to be a great Raider for us.”

Q: What are the biggest obstacles he has to clear?

A: “Well, it’s a faster game in the NFL. Stronger guys, faster. He’ll play against stronger, faster guys that will be more like himself. He is a very fast, strong individual, and he’ll be playing against people of the same likeness. So, it is an adjustment but if you’ve got the dogged determination, which I think he has, he’s not going to let that bother him. Thanks a lot. Good to see you guys.”

All character issues aside, Mallett is a statue in the pocket and by the time he finished running his 40 yard dash Jamarcus Russell had eaten 11 more cheeseburgers and bought a new necklace…

After all these posts….Al Davis is who we thought he was.
Which one of you guys is MaddenRaider now?
Where’s Dakota? getting spit up on by Jr?

    3rd round big board:

    3) OT/OG Clint Boling (Georgia), OG/C John Moffitt (Wisconsin), CB Curtis Brown (Texas), OT Jah Reid (UCF), OLB Mason Foster (Washington), or NT/DT Kendrick Ellis (Hampton)

Kappy came in for a visit, and the bootlickers were all over him.

  • J Hill

1st pick as in today’s first pick You know, the trade that was talked about before the draft started?

But I’m sure you knew that.

  • J Hill

    LOL @ “bootlickers”.

Is that right BACK there with whipper snapper?

  • priesttj

The Fortyniners absence from the playoffs is over after one year. kappy may not start right away but he’ll beat out Smith by midseason and Harbaugh will have him playing good football by years end. They may have gotten the 2-3rd best QB in the draft and a nightmare to deal with.

Yeah some of you people only parrot Raider propaganda without ANY critical thinking of your own. If you’re able?

  • priesttj

Now the best thing we can do is caontinue to forify the Oline and add depth to the secondary.

  • ENGLANDRAIDER

Some of you people are unbelievable.
There is NO WAY IN HELL that Wiz is a bad pick.
You CAN NOT assume that he will be there later and our OL is a case for 911.

    ******

    That didnt happen.

I’v ebeen telling you guys the Wiz kid isn’t what everybody thinks he is. He’s a good player but he’s not what everyone says he is I think we can get him in the 3rd. Draft Kappy in the 2nd comeback and get Wiz in the 3rd and a WR in the 4th. Draft Van Dyke in the 5th and you have a very good draft.

In that weak arsse division, that may be true.

Certainly not because of a 2nd rd QB.

    McClain, Houston, Veldheer, Wiz 2.0…

Thanks,J Hill.Severe,if you don’t like the pick-fine,no sweat off my balls. But don’t throw ridiculous statements about the guy.He was All-American as a JR at the Center position. He was moved to G as a SR.Don’t know why.You don’t know that he isn’t/won’t be a better C than Satele who wasn’t liked that much by the coaches obviously. It is also possible Satele could be moved to G.At no time was Satele the Raiders best O-Lineman last or any other year.
    //////////////////////////////////////////////////

Satele has never played G and there is no indication that he will be able to do it now. He was our most consistent OL the second half of the season and the best by far the last 4 games. He is being replaced primarily because he is more compatible for the ZBS though he could certainly function in the stystem that we run as he displayed last year. Most “experts” acknowledge how well he played down the stretch and Jerry has said it several times himself.

Nothing i said about Wiz II was ridiculous. He is not particularly strong at the POA, not quite nimble and has average balance. He has short arms and was pushed around by some of the bigger DL he faced. That being said, he knows how to play the game, has good technique, understands angles, has a non stop motor and is very aggressive. Not a great athelete but gets by with above average football IQ, a great motor and will….classic overachiever

  • armond

what exactly were the pats asking for to trade with us? was hoping we would take marvin austin instead but kendrick ellis is still available.

If Satele goes down, you have to move Veldheer, then replace Veldheer at LT.

They need a Center to challenge and provide quality depth.

Priest,I think you are going a little overboard on the Kaepernick pick.He MAY turn out to be a good player. Then again he may not.You know as well as most of us that QBs are not always what they seem.

  • Bauce Rules

Kell get off of BHP. He is a Raider at heart and an OG I respect. You are just a bitter dude who needs to meet his maker yesterday

  • severeraiderz

Lol where is the outrage over us reaching on this guy…he was projected as a 3rd rounder and we took him in the first half of the second. We reached by a good 20 picks at least. We could have easily traded back, got an extra 3rd and 5th, and still picked this guy. We easily reached, in terms of projection, as much with him as we did with DHB, especially with Bowers sitting there. We should get much greater return from Wiz II than we got from DHB this upcoming season.

Lombardo was talking about the Raider making a move to trade up with the Pats. I didn’t catch all the details, but it seemed at one point before the Pats made the pick, the panel thought it would happen.

    Again, didn’t catch the details.

We draft a Wizneiwski, and names like Jim Otto are being tossed around as consultants to the pick? Yeah, sounds like Hue’s really in control of things.

    No playoffs till Al retires.

  • bcz24

Enough already dude… we get it. You think we reached. Check. How much did they pay you to sit in the draft room? How the EFF do you know that they didnt try to trade back, not get the deal they wanted and just took they guy? Your guessing. We reached by 20 picks, well guess what genius… we didnt pick again for 33 more picks!
